THAT’S A WRAP ON ACFAS 2023!

ACFAS 2023 is in the books – and it was a hit! We are so thankful for the 1,800+ attendees and 157 exhibitors who joined us in Los Angeles.

The conference kicked off with an energizing keynote address by Victoria Arlen, who shared her inspiring story about the perspective we give to the obstacles in our lives, how to change it, and how to push off of those roadblocks to achieve greater heights.

Immediate Past President Michael J. Cornelison, DPM, FACFAS provided an update on the College’s activities from the past year, including a review of the Strategic Compass and refining the mission statement to: “Advancing excellence in foot and ankle surgery to achieve superior patient outcomes.”

Dr. Cornelison also introduced the ACFAS Chris Mahaffey Leadership Development Program, which will (continued on page 14)

REINVIGORATE.

As I reflect on the recent ACFAS Annual Scientific meeting held in Los Angeles in early February, I returned to Iowa with a renewed vigor for my practice and patients. As always, the caliber of the sessions were second to none and I walked away with more knowledge than when I arrived. It also reenergizes me after connecting with thousands of colleagues and friends.

I am excited about what 2023 will hold for ACFAS members. With the launch of the new ACFAS Chris Mahaffey Leadership Development Program, which was dedicated to the College’s former Executive Director during ACFAS 2023, there will be many opportunities for members to get involved. This new program will allow members to develop their leadership skills and develop new relationship on both a local and national level. It will also be important to mentor younger leaders that will matriculate into leadership positions in the future. It is imperative to engage younger people interested in the field of foot and ankle surgery. I encourage all ACFAS members to reach out to local colleges and

universities to recruit undergraduate students into our wonderful profession.

I am looking forward to the College’s expanding educational offerings. The Women's Virtual Symposium: Challenging Cases & Challenges in the Profession will be held in April. The virtual Symposium is being held on Saturday, April 22 and will present a fusion of lectures on challenging cases, before transitioning into talks pertinent to women foot and ankle surgeons. This will be a stimulating program and I encourage all ACFAS members to attend.

We are also embarking on the development of a new registry for outcomes in foot and ankle surgery. This will help with tracking the outcomes of specific foot and ankle procedures, resulting in better patient centric outcomes through research. I encourage all of our members to get involved in the registry. If you are interested in participating the registry development and stay up to date on this initiative, please send an email with your contact information to registry@acfas.org.

I am excited to serve the ACFAS membership during the upcoming year and am grateful to the many leaders that have come before me. I would like to specifically thank Thanh Dinh, DPM FACFAS and Michael Cornelison, DPM FACFAS for setting a high bar for the College and leading by example. As the year quickly progresses to spring, I hope that you are also reinvigorated to return to your practice with new information and ideas to be the best for your patients. Additionally, I hope that you have the vigor to support the future of our profession and visit local colleges and universities to educate students on our profession and the privilege that we have to take care of patients with their wide variety of foot and ankle problems. We are a very important cog in the wheel of patient care and prevention. As John F. Kennedy said “One person can make a difference and everyone should try.”

Trevor Page Named 2023 ACFAS/PICA Future Leader Scholar

The ACFAS/PICA Future Leader Scholarship provides a $40,000 academic scholarship to one outstanding student, made possible by an unrestricted grant from PICA.

2023 Manuscript Winners

This year’s manuscript competition received 68 submissions for the 2023 Annual ACFAS Manuscript Awards of Excellence competition. All submissions were blind reviewed by a panel of ACFAS Fellows to select 42 to be presented at ACFAS 2023 in Los Angeles. Women's Virtual Symposium: Challenging Cases and Challenges in the Profession

ACFAS recognizes that women foot and ankle surgeons face unique challenges in the profession, and the Women's Virtual Symposium is designed to address those challenges head-on. This live-streamed event will take place rday, April 22 and will focus on lectures on challenging cases and complications while also talking about issues pertinent to women foot and ankle surgeons.

Attendees will earn 6 CME credits and have the opportunity to hear from women foot and ankle surgeons who have overcome obstacles and achieved success in their careers. The symposium will also provide a platform for networking and building connections with other women in the profession.

Faculty will include some of the most experienced and respected surgeons in the profession, who will share their knowledge and expertise with attendees. They will share challenging cases around such topics as MIS Bunion, Chronic Achilles, Syndesmosis Injuries, Lapidus complications, and more.

Dr. Christopher Lamy Receives Distinguished Service Award

Christopher J. Lamy, DPM, FACFAS, a Fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS) was recently honored with the College’s highest award, the Distinguished Service Award. Dr. Lamy received his award at the ACFAS Annual Scientific Conference in Los Angeles.

A prestigious honor voted on by his colleagues, Dr. Lamy received the Distinguished Service Award following an extensive tenure with the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons, having spent more than 20 years volunteering for the College. Most notably, Dr. Lamy’s leadership encompassed an area of technical instruction, where he served on the Surgical Skills Committee for six years, two of those as chair. In addition, Dr. Lamy played an important role in the College's electronic media offerings at a critical point in its evolution, where he helped optimize the College's web presence leading up to the year 2000.

“I am humbled to know the ACFAS Board feels my work as a technical instructor for the College in addition to my work as a mentor and leadership team member warrants the honor of the Distinguished Service Award,” said Dr. Lamy. “In all my leadership roles over the years, I strived to contribute the most scientifically-sound,

cutting-edge guidance, so foot and ankle surgeons remain the most trusted health care professionals serving patients.”

“Under his leadership, Dr. Lamy had a distinct impact on virtually every one of our ACFAS Board members, either as a cocommittee member, a mentor or a surgical instructor,” said Dr. Michael Cornelison, DPM, FACFAS, immediate-past-president of ACFAS. “Because of his impact, we as a Board were very proud to cast our vote for him to receive such an honorable award.”

Dr. Lamy also expressed gratitude for the support and guidance of the College’s continued dedication to helping to advance patient care through foot and ankle health research and hands-on instruction. “There is no excellence in patient care without scientific conferences, webinars and continuing education, adding vital practical knowledge and skills,” he said.

Dr. Lamy earned his doctoral degree in podiatric medicine at the California College of Podiatric Medicine and received advanced training at Saint Joseph’s Hospital in Philadelphia. Dr. Lamy also received fellowship training abroad in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Lund in Malmo, Sweden. Before joining the Vancouver Clinic in 2012, Dr. Lamy practiced in the Portland and Vancouver area for

20 years both in private practice and as teaching faculty at Oregon Health & Science University. Dr. Lamy is currently a foot and ankle surgeon at the Vancouver Clinic in Vancouver, Washington and is Board certified in foot surgery and reconstructive rearfoot/ankle surgery.

While in LA for ACFAS 2023, our expert faculty Danielle Butto, DPM, FACFAS and Scott Nelson, DPM, FACFAS, helped attendees take the first step towards maximizing reimbursement with Coding Fundamentals. With a record 89 attendees, the group walked away with an overview of the foundation of foot and ankle surgical coding and billing while discussing E&M codes, CPT codes, and modifiers.

Coding and Billing for the Foot and Ankle Surgeon was also a hit in southern California! With another sellout program, attendees took their current knowledge, along with some new pearls they learned from our experienced faculty of Sean Grambart, DPM, FACFAS, and certified coder Jacqueline Reiss-Kravitz, CPC, AAPC Fellow, and participated in surgical coding scenarios including forefoot reconstruction, arthrodesis, office procedures, rearfoot and ankle reconstruction, tendon surgery, arthroscopy, trauma and diabetic foot surgery.

The Residency Directors Forum, co-hosted by ACFAS and the Council of Teaching Hospitals (COTH), focused on optimizing resident review and oversight. The agenda included topics such as the assessment of residents' clinical competence, evaluation tools, and ensuring that residents meet the Council on Podiatric Medical Education (CPME) requirements. Attendees were also able to discuss current challenges and opportunities related to residency education.

“Our Residency Directors were able to participate in a few workshops which allowed them to exchange best practices in residency education. Once again we had a record breaking attendance with diverse topics on residency education and training. We were pleased to, once again, have CPME as an active participant of our Residency Program Director to assist our attendees on new residency education standards. directors where they listened and learned best practices in education from their fellow residency directors.” Roya Miraman, DPM, FACFAS noted, reflecting the positive feedback from attendees. “The Residency Director Forum is not only a platform for an annual reunion among our top leaders in foot and ankle surgical education, but it brings strong collaboration and engagement among our program directors.”

Residents Day, sponsored in part by an unrestricted educational grant from Organogenesis, provided information to help residents navigate the transition from residency to practice. This event provided an opportunity for residents to network with other professionals and gain insights from experienced surgeons. The day included discussions on job searching, contract negotiation, and other topics relevant to transitioning into practice. Residents Day was well-attended, and participants were

enthusiastic about the knowledge they gained.

2023 Fellowship Breakfast Fair: Another Hit!

On an early Saturday morning in Los Angeles, the College’s Fellowship Breakfast Fair brought together 50 fellowship program directors and current fellows from across the country to meet with curious students and residents who are considering applying for a coveted fellowship position. Sponsored by PICA, the event provided an opportunity for attendees to network and learn about different fellowship programs.

Navigating the fellowship application process can be overwhelming, with numerous programs to choose from and a highly competitive applicant pool. The Fellowship Breakfast Fair aimed to simplify the process and make it easier for prospective students

to connect with fellowship program directors and current fellows. The fair was a bustling hub of activity, with attendees chatting with program directors and fellows, learning about different fellowship opportunities, and asking questions about the application process.

For those who are considering applying for a fellowship position, attending events like the Fellowship Breakfast Fair can be a game-changer. By taking advantage of the opportunity to connect with program directors and fellows, attendees can gain insights into the application process, learn about different programs, and make valuable connections that can help them stand out.
