Message from the CEO
Jeanette Ives Erickson, RN, DNP Interim President & CEOIn the months leading up to tonight, I have been struck by the stories so many Nantucketers have shared with me about cherished memories of our Boston Pops on Nantucket. Tonight, for the first time in nearly three years, we can celebrate and support our beloved community hospital, while making new memories.
Since coming to Nantucket in March to lead Nantucket Cottage Hospital, I have witnessed the incredible dedication, devotion, and compassion exhibited by our hospital’s staff. I have watched as our clinicians have cared for children’s scrapes and aches, have stabilized critically ill patients with seconds to spare, and our entire support staff has taken this world-class facility and turned it into a welcoming place for care and compassion for all Nantucketers.
Each and every day, our team at Nantucket Cottage Hospital provides the lifesaving, and life-changing care that each of you has come to expect when you come through our doors. Our team can do this remarkable work, thanks to the immense support they receive from community members like you.
I believe you cannot have a community hospital without a community. So, as we come together to celebrate and support our Nantucket Cottage Hospital, I would like to celebrate you. Without you and your support, our hospital would not be the Nantucket Cottage Hospital we all know and care about.
There are so many people who deserve thanks for making tonight’s event possible. I would particularly like to recognize Steve and Jill Karp and White Elephant Resorts who have supported the Boston Pops on Nantucket and made it possible from the very beginning. I’d also like to recognize Fidelity Investments for their decades of support.
A special thank you goes out to this year’s event co-chairs, Bruce and Elisabeth Percelay, who always rise to the occasion for NCH, a who have worked so hard over the past year to make this such a great event.
And, I thank you, for your continued support of Nantucket Cottage Hospital!
Jeanette Ives Erickson, RN, DNP Interim President & CEO, Nantucket Cottage HospitalMessage from the Chairs
Elisabeth and Bruce PercelayAgreat deal has happened since the last Pops concert in 2019, most notably the pandemic. While COVID-19 presented major challenges to us all, it highlighted why having a sophisticated and highly professional hospital on the island is essential. It was a time that also showcased the talent and dedication of the hospital staff for which we are all grateful.
Going back further in time, a simple idea of having a concert to support the hospital was hatched and has evolved into the premier event of the season. Since its inception, over 100,000 people have been entertained by the Pops and the money raised has become a critical part of the funding for the operation of our hospital.
Personally, NCH will always have a special place in our hearts as our sons William and Charlie were born here on island, which was the best decision we made just over 8 and 9 years ago. We are thrilled our boys are here with us tonight for their first Pops!
We are both humbled and honored to be your hosts tonight and we not only celebrate 25 years of the Boston Pops on Nantucket but being on the beach together once again!
Sincerely,
Elisabeth and Bruce Percelay Chairs, 25TH Anniversary Boston Pops on NantucketNATALIE JACOBSON HOST
Natalie Jacobson, known affectionately to New Englanders as “Nat,” rose to prominence as a reporter and anchor for WCVB-TV Boston from 1972 to 2007, and hosted the first ever Boston Pops on Nantucket in the summer of 1997.
During her 40-year career as a broadcaster, Jacobson anchored every major broadcast until her retirement in 2007. Since then she has broadened her focus from the screen, to include print, authoring a new memoir, Every Life A Story: Natalie Jacobson Reporting, which was published earlier this spring. Tonight's event will mark Jacobson's eighth time hosting the Boston Pops on Nantucket.
SKYLER WRIGHT
NATIONAL ANTHEM SINGER
Growingup on Nantucket, Skyler Wright discovered her passion for the arts at a young age performing for Theatre Workshop of Nantucket and Nantucket Dreamland. In High School, Wright performed as a soloist at Carnegie Hall in N.Y., was inducted into the International Thespian Society, received numerous awards from the Massachusetts Educational Theatre Guild and filmed her first motion picture.
Wright continued on to Los Angeles and became credited with roles on over a dozen Network television programs and feature films. In 2021, she skyrocketed in popularity (all the way to #11 on IMDb, a database of over 4 million actors) for her recurring role on Showtime's Dexter: New Blood. Wright is currently working on her first single as a songwriter and recording artist and is thrilled to be performing at such a special occasion on her beloved island. @skyler.wright
MARC MARTEL MUSICAL GUEST
Long before lending his voice to the Oscar winning biopic, “Bohemian Rhapsody”, touring the world in over 40 countries to sold out audiences, or before his YouTube videos went viral, spawning an appearance on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” and a performance with the surviving members of Queen on “American Idol,” Marc Martel spent 13 years recording and touring the globe with Canadian rockers Downhere.
At first, Marc Martel almost passed on the opportunity to perform the music of Queen, but with some prodding from his wife and additional friends, he casually cut a version of “Somebody To Love” in 2011, and now 30 million cumulative YouTube and Facebook views later, bolstered by the aforementioned “Ellen” appearance, Martel was declared the victor. Even legendary Queen drummer Roger Taylor remarked to the Daily Record: “That voice. You listen, close your eyes and you think it’s Freddie. It’s really uncanny.”
Martel is the ideal match for the Ultimate Queen Celebration, an explosive, attention-commanding tribute where some of the most iconic rock anthems of all time collide with a theatrical performance style and eye-popping production. At its core, the riveting show focuses on the extremely diverse body of the band’s greatest hits, from the grandiose “Bohemian Rhapsody” to the adrenaline-pumping “We Will Rock You,” the euphoric “We Are The Champions,” the funky “Another One Bites The Dust,” the stadium-shaking David Bowie collaboration “Under Pressure,” the soulful “Somebody To Love” and the swinging “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” (to name but a few from the steroid-stacked set list).
But even with the overwhelming demand behind Martel’s Queen-themed projects, he’s cultivated an increasingly visible solo career defined by a relentless creativity, unpredictably and practically super human abilities to simultaneously craft his own identity while flawlessly stepping into the shoes of others. He’s made additional waves performing at the direct request of Céline Dion (who avidly follows his videos) on Radio-Canada TV's “En direct de l’Universe” in 2016, plus a jaw-dropping cover of George Michael and Wham!’s “Last Christmas” for the video game “Just Dance 2017” (with Kenny Loggins’ “Footloose” coming next).
In 2019 “Silver Bells” gave Martel his first #1 song at Billboard Christian AC Monitor and #1 at Mediabase Christian AC alongside legendary recording artists Amy Grant, and Michael W. Smith. Add in performances on People.com, ten nights at the Calgary Stampede, Kentucky Derby Opening Night, plus various Arizona Cardinals, Carolina Panthers, Las Vegas Golden Knights, San Francisco Giants, Phoenix Suns, Los Angeles Clippers and Charlotte Hornets games, and there’s truly no limit to Martel’s unreal reach.
KEITH LOCKHART CONDUCTOR
Keith Lockhart is the second longesttenured conductor of the Boston Pops Orchestra since its founding in 1885. He took over as conductor in 1995, following John Williams’s 13-year tenure from 1980 to 1993; Mr. Williams succeeded the legendary Arthur Fiedler, who was at the helm of the orchestra for nearly 50 years.
Keith Lockhart, who occupies the Julian and Eunice Cohen Boston Pops Conductor chair, has conducted more than 2,000 Boston Pops concerts and annual Boston Pops appearances at Tanglewood, as well as 45 national tours and 4 international tours to Japan and Korea. The annual Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular conducted by Mr. Lockhart draws a live audience of over half a million to the Charles River Esplanade and millions more who view it on television or live webcast. He has led eight albums on RCA Victor/BMG Classics; recent releases on Boston Pops Recordings include A Boston Pops Christmas–Live from Symphony Hall, The Dream Lives On: A Portrait of the Kennedy Brothers, and Lights, Camera…Music! Six Decades of John Williams.
The list of nearly 300 guest artists with whom Keith Lockhart has collaborated represents performers from virtually every corner of the entertainment world. Having recently completed an eight year tenure as principal conductor, he is now chief guest conductor of the BBC Concert Orchestra in London; he is also artistic director of the Brevard Music Center summer institute and festival in North Carolina. Prior to his BBC appointment, he spent 11 years as music director of the Utah Symphony.
He has appeared as a guest conductor with virtually every major symphonic ensemble in North America and many in Asia and Europe. Before coming to Boston, he was the associate conductor of both the Cincinnati Symphony and Cincinnati Pops orchestras, as well as music director of the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra.
About The Boston Pops
Formore than 135 years, the Boston Pops has entertained audiences in Boston and beyond, with Boston Pops Conductor Keith Lockhart leading the orchestra since 1995. It all began in 1885, thanks to the vision of Civil War veteran Henry Lee Higginson. Four years earlier, in 1881, he founded the Boston Symphony Orchestra, calling its establishment “the dream of my life.” From the start he intended to present, in the warmer months, concerts of light classics and the popular music of the day. From a practical perspective, Higginson realized that these “lighter” performances would provide year-round employment for his musicians. The “Promenade Concerts,” as they were originally called, were soon informally known as “Popular Concerts,” which eventually became shortened to “Pops,” the name o cially adopted in 1900. The following year the orchestra performed for the first time in its new home, Symphony Hall. Not only is this performance space acoustically outstanding, it was also designed, at Higginson’s insistence, so that the rows of seats for Boston Symphony concerts could be replaced by tables and chairs for Pops concerts. To this day, patrons sitting at the cabaret-style tables can enjoy food and drink along with the kind of musical entertainment only the Boston Pops can provide.

We apologize for omitting anyone who supported the Boston Pops on Nantucket after tonight’s program book went to press.
Celebrating 25 Years of the Boston Pops on Nantucket
Today, the Boston Pops on Nantucket is the single largest, most complex and most popular event of the Nantucket summer season, but this longstanding event comes from humble origins. Bringing worldclass entertainment to Nantucket required a world-class effort.
In 1997, a small group of volunteers sought an innovative and inclusive way to raise money for Nantucket Cottage Hospital. Led by the late Kathy Clauss, they imagined what seemed impossible: what if we could bring the world-famous Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra to Nantucket?
Working with a few tireless advocates on the hospital’s Board of Trustees, including Margaretta Andrews and the late Charles Balas, Clauss’ idea of a concert on the beach began to take shape.
In August of 1997, the legendary John Williams hopped on the ferry to conduct the orchestra at Jetties Beach while thousands of islanders came together to raise a total of $585,000 which was used by the hospital to purchase cardiac equipment and defibrillators. The event was so popular that planning for 1998 began immediately.
The next year, a then relatively unknown 38-year-old named Keith Lockhart came to Nantucket to conduct the orchestra and continues to head the 100+ ensemble today.
“What stays in my mind is the incredible beauty of the setting. It’s great music in a sublime place,” Lockhart told N Magazine of his favorite part of conducting on Nantucket.
Today, the Boston Pops on Nantucket raises millions of dollars annually for Nantucket Cottage Hospital to support the hospital’s year-round commitment to the health of our island community.
This effort brings together all Nantucketers each year to make the concert a reality. Volunteers, hospital staff, vendors, donors, and community partners join together with such exuberance to celebrate the best of Nantucket - summer, beach, music, and raising money for a universal cause, healthcare.
Tonight’s event is the 25th anniversary of that first concert at Jetties in 1997, and while tonight also marks the first Boston Pops on Nantucket since a nearly three-year hiatus due to the pandemic, the lineage of our celebration has remained unbroken, and the spirit of tonight, built on the idea of coming together to celebrate a hospital and a community, continues on.
