New Year, New You! Happy New Year! I made a resolution, did you? Though the title of this article is New Year, New You, my intent is not just physical. We are the sum of our parts so we must include our mental, emotional and spiritual components. I’m calling this the year of ‘ME’ and I’m putting myself and my well being first. Does that sound selfish? In an airplane, we’re always told to put on our oxygen masks on first. After all, if we’re not healthy and capable, not only do we suffer, but our loved ones do too, especially if they rely on us, or, more importantly, if they have to take care of us. So putting me

By Gloria Miller

first isn’t selfish if it enables me to live a longer, productive, happy and healthy life! My 2 pronged resolution includes ‘me first’ and ‘let it go, let it go, let it go’ to the tune of ‘let it snow’. Many people, myself included, like control. And many people focus on the little things. I’ve learned to ask myself, ‘is this life or death’, and if my answer is no, then I sing, ‘let it go’. I remember lessons from Dale Carnegie and I ask myself if I can control it or change it, and if my answer is no, then I let it go. I try not to worry about tomorrow, it hasn’t arrived yet. I leave the past in the past ; it’s...

3 Margaritas Mexican Cuisine

If you are trying to escape the cold this winter but can’t get away, then head on over to 3 Margaritas where the owners’ genuine warmth will make you feel as if you are on holiday in sunny Mexico. I returned to 3 Margaritas after having dined in the cheery restaurant to interview its owner, Jose Solario. We were joined by Jose’s mother, Maria Pineda, with whom we had the most delightful conversation. These two are such wonderful people, and the food they serve up is both authentic and reasonable. Do yourself a favor and give 3 Margaritas in Fenton a try.

You’ll be glad you did! Anne: Anne Weibert Jose: Jose Solario Maria: Maria Pineda Anne: Jose, please tell me about yourself and the story of your path from Mexico City, Mexico to Fenton, Missouri. Jose: This all began when my sister married an American from Imperial. My mom and sister immigrated first. My mother came with my sister just to make sure that everything was okay. My father decided to sell our home in Mexico and join my mother here. I was only nineteen and had no choice but to come with my father in 2005.

Redbirds Fly South It is hard to believe, but baseball season will be gearing up for the New Year! Our St. Louis Cardinals had a fun and exciting 2013 with winning the National League title and playing in the World Series! Spring Training begins on February 28th in beautiful Jupiter, Florida. It is an experience for any true baseball fan of any age! The St. Louis Cardinals play at Roger Dean Stadium, named after Roger H. Dean, proprietor of Roger Dean Automobiles – one of the first Mega Dealerships in Florida. The business has held the naming

rights to the stadium since opening in 1998. Roger Dean Stadium is simply my favorite Spring Training facility in the country. Not just because I am a Cardinal fan, more so because of location, seating, and size! The stadium only holds 6,871 people, which makes every seat in the park a “home run”. The intimate feel of this stadium surrounds you and team players are almost within reach! It is if you are sitting at a high school/college sports event with the big leagues. The Roger Dean Stadium Complex is the only stadium in the country to host four minor league teams and host two major league teams – that being our Cardinals and the Miami Marlins. Not to worry though, Cardinal red takes over this venue by far and St. Louisans can be proud to call Jupiter the winter home of “Cardinal Nation”! Right before the stadium

Let Us Hear From You!

wellness THE HEAVENLY REALM IS OPEN TO ALL OF US by Beth Thater-Boesel

There is an incredible amount of Joy in knowing what your purpose is, being in alignment with this purpose and actively living out your purpose. I have been asked by Pat Adams, the publisher of Active Lifestyles Magazine to publish articles in her paper each article building upon one another. Last month, I spoke about how I assist people releasing illness, disease, extreme sadness, and other physical, emotional, and spiritual challenges. I also spoke about how I am able to help clients move into and operate in a higher expansion of their God-Self. I have created a safe space for people to step into and as a result, they are able to let go, release and, move into self-empowerment! I tend to use the expression of source energy as God or infinite wisdom. I also refer to this source energy as Universal Consciousness. I am merely an open conduit for God to use. In this article, I am going to speak about several extraordinary events which have taken place in my life. These events moved me out of the earthly realm we reside in and as the veils were lifted around me, I could see the pure ONENESS of everything. My life is purely magical and I have found that this earthly plane we live

in is but a resting place for our soul to learn many lessons. We are not of this world! John 17 verse 16, “They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.” My ability to connect with the outer realms, Archangels, Christ, and God Himself has opened me up to the Heavenly realms which are but a thought away and simply through connecting to our hearts, we are able to magically enter into this sacred realm. Pat Adams interviewed me about my walk with Christ and how my path opened up. I heard directly from God/Creator that it was time to speak out and share the true blessings which have come to me and to share with others that they too have access NOW to His magnificent treasures. In Gods words “Beth, you will publish my good works through you.” Psalms 26 verse 7 “That I may publish with the voice of thanksgiving, and tell of all thy wondrous works.” I want people to understand this about me. While I may have a strong connection to God, Christ, and His angelic realm, I also understand that I am not perfect but I do my best to walk a clear path. It is my hope that this article will reach your hearts in a way that renews your light within. It does not matter what faith you are or what path you are

on spiritually. We are ALL children of God and He has placed His authority in each of us. He loves us. Questions about Divinity. Pat: Pat Adams, Editor Beth: Beth Thater-Boesel

Pat: When did you first start having these experiences and what was this like? Beth: My first experience to divine was in April, 2007. I was sitting in meditation and I felt my body shift energetically. I felt warm electrical currents flowing through my body. Through my mind’s eye, I could see Christ standing in front of me. My mind began to race as this seemed so out of reality for me. Christ said to me “Do not doubt in what you see.” He could sense that I was in a mental struggle with seeing Him visually. He said again, “Do not doubt in what you see.” This is when I let down the walls and filters I had up around me. Christ’s presence is pure unconditional love! He is so strong and loving. He holds no judgment and He exudes this pure magnetic love which opened my heart and I felt immense love in every cell of my body. I was brought to tears from His presence. I felt

Him healing my emotions that were buried deep within me as a young child simply through His presence. Christ placed His hands on me and I felt His glorious light flow through me energetically. He also asked me to hold His wrist and I could feel His pulse. I exclaimed within “He’s alive.” Christ also presented me with a gift. He handed me a Scepter/Staff. He told me to keep this Scepter over my heart and that it would protect me. I use this Scepter today to heal myself and my clients. I have received many gifts from the ethereal realm and while they may not be visible to the eyes of others, I can see them. Pat: Has this experience changed your life and if so, how? Beth: Yes, my life has completely shifted exponentially. Christ brought His light into me with His touch. He said “I expanded your light within”, “now, in turn you will expand the light of others.” He placed an activation into my Cellular DNA. As I place my hands on others, they will receive the same activations. When Christ laid His hand on me, He renewed me and He has asked me to help renew ... Continued on Page 8

ALKALIZE OR DIE by Linda Emmanuel

Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead and Forks Over Knives are documentaries where people adopted a plant-based diet and reversed their diseases. In the first film, two men diagnosed with an autoimmune disease “cure” themselves by going on a 60-day “green” juice fast. In Forks Over Knives, patients with heart disease and diabetes reversed their diseases by going on a plant-based diet for life. By the way, neither documentary mentions mycoplasmas, as being the cause of their diseases. Don’t you wonder how they killed the mycoplasmas and reversed their diseases? There are two reasons: PH The cells’ pH is determined by minerals. There are alkaline minerals (calcium and magnesium) and there are acid minerals (manganese, for example). Sources

of alkaline minerals are only in fruits and vegetables. Grains, meat, sugar, peanuts and dairy are sources of acidic minerals. Mycoplasmas thrive in an acidic environment. Most Americans eat an acidic diet; therefore, they are vulnerable to mycoplasma infections. Think of minerals as rock fragments. They are in everything we eat. Since a cell does not burn rock to make energy, minerals are left as residual ash inside the cell. This residual ash determines the cell’s pH. When the subjects’ cells changed from an acidic to an alkaline pH, the mycoplasmas either went “dormant” or died. Bacterial Plaque For safety, mycoplasmas colonize. Using protein they adhere to each other, adhere to the host, and build a protein shield over themselves for protection against the immune system. This shield is called plaque. An example of this is the bacterial plaque on your teeth. Mycoplasma plaque is what causes blockages in the arteries leading to stroke or heart attack. Mycoplasma plaque is what causes carpal tunnel. Cataracts are bacterial plaque. Plaque has also been found in the brains of autopsied Alzheimer’s victims.

When the subjects stopped eating meat, their pancreatic protein enzymes broke down the plaque. Once the plaque began to erode, the immune system went to work killing the mycoplasmas. Supplementing with papaya (papain) enzymes will speed up the process even faster. Sold in health food stores. Papaya enzymes have been used as meat tenderizers for years. Next Month: Protocols I - Alkaloids. Linda is now available to speak to your group. Call Linda: 314-502-0227 Email: lindajemmanuel@charter.net Web site: www.lindaemmanuel.com

Alternative Revelations Linda’s book, Alternative Revelations contains many effective protocols that not only kill mycoplasmas but also the borrelia spirochaete, which causes Lyme disease. It is available on Amazon. She also hosts wellness seminars at Flex Health & Wellness on Big Bend at Dougherty Ferry. There is a wellness open house at Flex on January 24th . I HAVE A WARM STONE WITH YOUR NAME ON IT by Janet Houseman, LMT

It is another winter day in St. Louis and temperatures start out near freezing and the sun may hide behind heavy clouds causing us to feel chilled, itchy, and out of sorts. A healthful remedy for cold extremities and dry skin is increased circulation with hot stone massage. Warmed stones on your tired muscles, cold feet and hands is just the winter treat you didn’t know you needed. Think serene music, creamy lotion, smooth, warming pressure gliding over your body for total relaxation at Creekside Massage. Imagine resting with a warm stone near your feet and holding warm stones in cold hands. You can drift away from stress in a cozy cocoon. The small, hot stones benefit the body through the warm temperature, gentle pressure and the continuity of strokes toward the heart center. Increased circulation of blood and lymph bring healing and comfort to the body. As the therapist gently and slowly works over the surface of the skin, the black basalt stones maintain a warmth that is grounding and relaxing. Fascia and muscle unwind easily to erase stress, provide deeper relaxation and decongest lymph. Gliding over the body, the healing

stones deeply touch tight pectoral muscles that freeze over computers or contract as a reaction to the cold and damp. Stones are not used on spine or bony areas of joints, so there is no discomfort. Do not let fear of too hot stones stop you from experiencing the deep relaxation. While the presence of reddish skin from the stone is evidence of increased circulation, the skin will return to normal as the session concludes. Because the tolerance for heat is different for each person, the therapist will test the stone on herself or on the inside of your arm before applying a heated stone to the body. The shaped stones are selected to match the curve of tight shoulder, arms, and back muscles, so I have a stone that will fit your sorest spot perfectly. For a massage created for your body and preferences, a hot stone massage at Creekside will provide a signature therapy that has your name on it! Don’t you need and deserve this beneficial and healthful treatment as a perfect remedy for winter blues? Call 636-220-8036 at Creekside Massage to schedule your appointment and welcome in the New Year warm and relaxed.

Trinkets Tea and Me has expanded to nearly 100 premium loose leaf teas. As always, the teas are at the lowest prices in the St. Louis area. These organic teas offer numerous potential health benefits. Spearmint Tea is being featured in this edition of “Let’s talk Tea”. Spearmint Tea is wonderful during the winter months and throughout the year and can be served hot or cold. Spearmint Tea is herbal and does not contain caffeine. Therefore, it is considered safe for everyone to drink and is considered one of the most popular of the herbal teas. Spearmint Tea has a great aroma, similar to peppermint, but with less menthol. It is very high in anti-oxidants such as phenolic and flavonoids. It is considered anti- fungal and there is some evidence that it may also have anti-bacterial properties. It may be best known for reducing symptoms of nausea. There has also been research conducted on Spearmint reducing symptoms of the following: sore throat, arthritis, cramps, toothaches, colds, diarrhea, stomach aches, irritable bowel syndrome, fatigue and stress. The analgesic properties of Spearmint are thought to be the reason why it may be effective reducing the

symptoms of cramps and toothaches. There has also been some evidence that Spearmint Tea may reduce hirsutism which is the unwanted hair that some women may have in areas such as above the lips and on the chin. Finally, Professor Susan Farr, from St. Louis University School of Medicine studied the effects of Spearmint and Rosemary extract on memory. She found evidence that they may improve both memory and learning. We always suggest that you do your own review of research and claims, discuss the information with your physician, and draw your own conclusions on the possible health benefits of various Teas. However, note that research studies are likely to use the Best Premium Teas. So, don’t “shortchange” yourself. Buy Premium Teas and save money at the same time. Purchase Tea from Trinkets Tea and Me, an alternative to the “Overpriced High Pressure Mall Store”. Pay the best prices in town, and maybe hear a song from Tina “The St. Louis singing Tea lady”.

HEALTHY EATING ON A BUDGET

FITNESS RESOLUTIONS by Christi Gleason

It’s another new year! Time for resolutions! It again is time to fix all of the problems life brings to us, whether they are debts, bad habits, addictions, or weight gain. We start off determined to make this the year to hit our goals. Then, after the holidays are over, we return to our usual routine, and it all goes south. Let’s face itâ€Ļwe’re battling much more than can ever be solved with a simple list. Who doesn’t know how to curb their spending or eat less? In moments of clarity, creating a plan isn’t rocket science, but it takes only one moment of weakness to ruin everything. Why can’t we figure it out? The truth of the matter is that society has set us up to fail in our quest to realize changes in our lives. The work day has grown longer, and free time is a prized possession. Be honest---how much LIVING do you do each day? How “present” are in you in your own life? The average working American wakes up each day, drives, works, eats, watches TV and sleeps. Add in time to run the kids to their activities, do housework, and fix meals. Who doesn’t spend time looking forward to Fridays, holidays, vacations, and even

retirement? We count down the days until we get “there”. Eventually, even if we are not “there”, we wake up one day and are suddenly old. Do you remember time dragging by as you longingly waited for each birthday? A time when you lived fearlessly every minute of the day? As adults, we expend a great deal of energy either coping with regrets or wondering what is yet to come. What about embracing the moment we are in? Taking a moment each day to observe ourselves can lead us to the very answers we require as life challenges us. Although we often possess these answers, we selfdefeat before even giving ourselves a chance. When we surrender our energy, we disempower ourselves, removing any chance of success. When setting your resolutions this year, spend some time assessing your true starting point. Rather than jumping in quickly, contemplate your life with brutal honesty. Commit to observing your own behaviors. Notice if they serve or sabotage your true desires. Adopting a more mindful presence instead of sleepwalking through life is the first, yet most challenging step towards real change. Are you ready?

wellness A Walk In the Woods of Missouri by Steven G. Liescheidt

Walking is one of the best active exercises that practically everyone can do at any age. Walking can be done at any pace. Many people walk around their neigborhoods, in enclosed shopping malls, on paved paths in parks and even on treadmills. The activity of walking in the scenic woods of

Many people fail to see the extensive benefits of seeing the dental hygienist every six months. They think that dentists are simply trying to increase profits and patient intake. However, it is important to consider two important pieces of information when deciding whether or not to come to see the hygienist every six months. First of all, insurance companies tend to be sticklers. They will not pay for something if the necessity of the issue cannot be scientifically proven through x – rays and extensive written records. However, pretty much every single insurance company will pay 100% on a cleaning twice a year, which indicates that it holds significant value. The second point is that many patients think that the semi – annual visits are a scam for dentists to make more money. The fact of the matter is, however, that if you come to the dentist every 6 months, it is likely to cost you less money than if you end up needing an expensive dental procedure that can result from poor oral hygiene. Missouri is called hiking. Hiking in Missouri is a time to relax and reflect while burning calories too. In 2013 Missouri was named the “Best Trails State” by American Trails. Hiking on the groomed and marked trails in Missouri is an activity that many are not aware of. There are hundreds of trails to choose from. Hiking on Missouri trails can take you to the most scenic overlooks of river valleys for awesome views in any season. Hiking can be done alone or with friends and family. While actively exercising by hiking there are numersous species of wild flowers, birds and seasonal colorful fungi and mushrooms to enjoy. The trees and rock formations along the trails are incredible in all four seasons in Missouri. A charity event started in 2013 called the “Xtreme Hike to Cure Cystic Fibrosis” has provided an opportunity for many to experience hiking for a good cause. The event is held on the

Ozark Trail in the Mark Twain National Forest. Registration is now open for the Xtreme Hike 2015. For More Information contact Steve (Co-Chair Planning Committee) at StevenGL1@sbcglobal.net.

THE HYGIENE VISIT

always recommends that patients see the hygienist regularly. Visiting the hygienist can significantly reduce your risk of heart disease, stroke, adult onset diabetes, and Alzheimer’s. If you ignore your teeth, they will go away, which can lead to a whole host of other problems. The hygienists at Dr. Allan Link’s office never make you feel bad for not coming in regularly. They just want to make sure that they get your gums healthy, and begin a maintenance program that will promote good oral hygiene. It is well known that maintenance is the key to clean, healthy living. So, why do so many people choose to ignore a visit to their dental hygienist? One reason may be that they see it as “just a cleaning (a cosmetic procedure).” However, oral cancer screenings are conducted through the x – rays, visual exams, and “Velscope” procedures that are done at this visit. The number of cases of oral cancer has increased each year over the last decade, but the preventative measures taken at the

hygiene visit could be the difference in life and death. Another reason people ignore this important visit is because they are uneducated about the severity of gum disease. The cleanings that the dental hygienist provides are also a preventative measure for this disease that affects over 80% of the population. It is often referred to as either gingivitis or periodontal disease, depending on the stage at which it is detected. The chronic inflammation of the gums that occurs when perio is present is what can increase the risk of heart disease and stroke. It also makes it much more difficult to control blood sugar. Recent studies have shown that the bacteria that causes gum disease is the same bacteria found in the brains of many Alzheimer’s patients. So the cleaning is not just for your teeth; it is why oral hygiene is listed as one of the top ten things to improve to live a healthier, longer life. If you are missing teeth or have no teeth at all, there are still benefits to seeing the hygienist. That

cancer screening is of significant importance for everyone, regardless of the state of their mouth. Continued from page 3 (The Heavenly Realm)... ...others. Christ is asking us to release and let go and step into a greater expansion of our God-Self. He wants people to remember that they already have everything within them and they do not need to look outside of themselves to find it. By simply staying connected to your heart center, you will open up to divine. My perceptions have opened up greatly. I have the ability to see, hear, feel, and connect to the outer realms. Christ has continued to show Himself to me and He always says “Beth, I am preparing you.” God asked me to prepare a safe and sacred space for others to come into where they can release and let go of physical, emotional, and spiritual challenges and blocks. I have created a sacred space from where I work. Many of my clients have had visitations from Christ, Mary, and several Archangels. Some of my clients are Ministers. I work with a great deal of God’s brightest teachers from the ethereal realm and they assist me and others who I am working with. I hear and see Christ and He always speaks to me and teaches me. I see Christ come through me energetically and others have seen Him come through me as well. He is transferring His light through me to others. This is a normal occurrence now and I am able to clearly hear wisdom, direction, and guidance from God. He speaks to me and speaks through me. His light is intense and magnified. On October 7th, Christ lifted

me energetically up to the Heavenly Gates/Higher Realms. He opened up a large golden door and asked me to step in. As I walked in, Christ shut the door behind me. I looked around and I saw the Hall of Records, many Archangels, St. Germaine, animals roaming together throughout the beautiful green hills and I saw beautiful temples. I knew that I was standing in Heaven or as some people may call this a sacred space. Christ said “from this day forth, you will reside here.” I know that He meant that I would be able to energetically shift to this space consciously. I am able to shift consciously to higher realms. There are many people on the planet who are able to currently do this. We are all able to do this as we grow spiritually. Pat: What message do you want to send out? Beth: I wish to convey a message God gave me on 12-12-14. He wanted me to publish this. He wants people to let go of all the old patterns, drama, selfblame, self-inflicted wounds, pain that other people have caused them and turn to His wisdom. Just let go and set your eyes up high and connect to your heart centers. He will pour His wisdom into you. I heard God say “we must not abandon Him, He holds the truth, and He is wisdom. We must follow Him as we are His expression of love. God went on to say “we are granted many things when we turn to Him.” Our world is shifting and as people move through their awakening

process, they realize that they are one with consciousness. There is no separation from all living things. This is Christ Consciousness. I want you to know that I am not preaching here. I believe each of us has our own way of receiving God/Creator/ Infinite wisdom. Whether it be sitting by a lake, in a temple, church, by a tree or in your sacred space you have created. My heart if full of great Joy and Happiness as I have made many shifts. The greatest joy is witnessing people birth into a greater expansion of their God-Self and remembering their true divinity. I believe that we are not separate from anything that creator has made. We are all collective consciousness. We are ONE BIG BEATING HEART! Feel free to contact me. I am offering a free Consultation Call valued at $147.00. My website is www.beththater.com and my e-mail is beththater@me.com. You may also call me at 1(636)299-8694. Editor’s Note: I am basically a very skeptical person definitely from Missouri where you have to “show me” before I believe anything. I am also very curious and have a need to learn new and different things. So when I met Beth and I learned what she does I had to check this all out for myself. I went to her with an open mind thinking at least I would have an

interesting article for the paper. In a session, she has you lie down on a table. She tells me that the Heavenly realm talks to her. OK, now I was wishing I went to church more often, read the Bible, or at least listened to the Christian radio shows. Need I say, I am not even close to being the most religious person you may encounter. I remember my ankles were on fire and I mentioned it to Beth. She laughed and said Christ has his hands wrapped around your ankles. (Oh, boy!) My body was so hot at one point and Beth said fire with blue flames were rising out of my body because Michael the Archangel laid His sword on my body. (OK now I do need to read the Bible). My take away from all of this? While I really did not go to her with any problems or concerns that needed evaluating, I did get answers to my life’s purpose and if what I am doing is the right thing. It had a profound effect on me afterwards that carried on for quite a long time. I felt very much at peace with many things in my life. I no longer care about the little issues that crop up in one’s life. Knowing my life has purpose and that I am doing the role I am supposed to means a lot. Having inner peace and calmness toward so many things, being able to let the little stuff go is an immense effect. Not to mention I feel so much closer to God and all Heavenly people is a very wonderful feeling.

over and done with. And if a situation isn’t my business or if it doesn’t affect me, I ‘let it go’. This attitude lifts emotional and mental weight that I don’t need to carry, and it totally benefits my overall well being. I once said I’m happy when I don’t think! That’s meditation. I try to ‘turn off’ my brain when I go to bed. If I am successful, I fall asleep faster. I practice yoga and try to accept me for me. If I can’t reach my toes or do downward dog as well as the instructor, that’s okay! Most yogis tell you to do what you can, and that it is totally fine and acceptable.

Meditation and yoga are two practices that definitely help our whole being because when the mind and body are relaxed and free of stress, our physical body reaps the benefit. When my body is relaxed, my mind clear and quiet, and my emotions are balanced, then my spirit soars. I feel calm, and more available to those who need me. My attitude is more positive and I am genuinely content and happy. My goal this year is not to be a size 2 or to keep up with ‘the Joneses’. My goal is to be a healthy, ‘whole’ person.

Continued from cover (Redbirds Fly South)... Right before the stadium debut in 1998, I was honored to take a tour of the construction site that would soon grace baseball fans from all over. I remember taking a bus out to a large sandy parcel of land with just a few trees here and there. I thought to myself, “what in the world are they thinking building this in no mans land”. But, this was truly a stadium being built with the mantra “if you build itâ€Ļ they will come” – and boy have they! Today, the stadium is surrounded with lush foliage and landscaping, parking facilities, restaurants, shops and a newly built hotel immediately across the drive from the stadium. In addition, Florida’s Atlantic University would grace the property next door within a few years after the stadium was completed. The new Alcoa neighborhood would rise with residential homes, apartments and condos making the stadium district active year-round. Each year, for the last 14 years, DIRECTIONS Tours has enjoyed taking people to Jupiter to experience our Cardinals in training. Many people take the tour to enjoy easy access in/out of the stadium, fellow Cardinal fans and an all-inclusive tour package that allows relaxation and comfort throughout. Many travelers make spring training an annual event and vacation. We offer or Spring Taining package as a flight or motorcoach option depending on your time, budget

Anne Weibert, Vice President of DIRECTIONS Tours. I have been very fortunate to travel to many places throughout the world but when I’m asked my favorite destination, I don’t hesitate at all: It’s ALASKA! I love majestic landscapes and they just don’t get any bigger or more majestic than our 49th state. In a world of technology and instant media access, we, as human beings, need a place to retreat to and replenish our souls. We need to see and hear the ancient sound of glaciers calving into a cold sea. We need to see a mama grizzly bear and her sow digging up roots in Denali National Park. We need to see Bald eagles soaring past mountain tops and we need to see a humpback whale breach out of a calm and steady sea. We need to reconnect with the primal, wild

parts of our world and when we do, our own souls rejoice and we become replenished. It is a privilege to share this part of our world with others on DIRECTIONS Tours. June is such a beautiful month to journey here, as the mountaintops are still snow covered and all of the animals are waking up and exploring the beginnings of summer. It’s the start of the Alaska season at this time of year and the towns aren’t overrun with tourists like they will be later in the summer. The weather in June is just perfect for exploration. I recommend that my travelers layer as we typically experience weather that ranges from the mid 50’s to near 80 degrees. So, what do I like to do while in Alaska? The very first thing I do is breathe deeply. There is nothing that compares to fresh Alaskan air; it feels like you are breathing for the very first time in your life. In this case, it’s good to inhale! Exploring the local galleries and eateries is something I always look forward to. I never miss the opportunity to have a meal of fresh crab legs and lobster bisque at Tracy’s King Crab Shack ( a discreetly hidden treasure in Juneau!) Exploring Creek Street in Ketchikan and touring Dolly’s Brothel is always a highlight as is

L A ND & CRUISE TOURS taking in the wonderful, hip art at Coho Soho Art Gallery. I make time to walk the trails and neighborhoods and marvel at the precariously perched Cliffside homes accessed only by long, narrow wooden stairs. I wonder what it would be like to live here and climb those steps every day. Haines, Alaska is

happy to see their customers and take the time to make you feel welcome. I sit in a pub and enjoy an Alaskan White, a glorious local brew. I catch a ferry to Skagway and walk the wooden planked town where the gold rush began in 1897 and I think about how brave and daring those Klondikers

Cruising in Alaska’s Majestic Glacier Bay another port that I always look forward to visiting and and I revel in its early history. I like to see how the old Army Barracks are coming along every year, as people are treasuring them and renovating them into the handsome buildings that they deserve to be. Ambling through the Alaskan Indian Arts building I watch skilled Tlingit carvers slowly create wondrous totem poles out of raw wood. I explore small galleries where the owners are

Continued from cover (Jilly’s Cafe & Steakhouse)... Anne: Do you like St. Louis? Maria: I like it here. It’s more plain out west, but here we have the rolling hills and it’s such a pretty state. Jose: We grew up going to Texas every year and it was very plain to us. No hills, no trees, nothing. Anne: Tell me how 3 Margaritas happened for you. Jose: While my mom was waiting for immigration paperwork for my sister, she came here and applied for a job as a waitress. Then two days before I moved here I was kidnapped in Mexico. Maria: They wanted his car and his money. Jose made a mistake by taking all of his money out of the bank. They saw him with the money, a nice car, and they knew he was young. Jose: There is so much corruption in Mexico and people that work in banks have connections with criminals because they know how much money people have. So, I was completely broke when I came to St. Louis. That had been my college money so I had to start working again in order to save money for school and that’s how I started working here as a cashier at 3 Margaritas. I actually was working two jobs, one here and one at the college. I worked here all throughout university and I graduated with a degree in marketing. I was very responsible and never missed a day at work. Anne: How did you go from working as a cashier to becoming the owner? Jose: That is an interesting question. There was an argument at that time between the three owners. One owner had brought in a manager who was stealing money and that

made the other two very angry and they blamed the other owner for bringing in this manager. So, the biggest owner decided to sell out his portion. I was a college student and didn’t have any money but the one owner just wanted out. So, I took out a personal loan and maxed out all of my credit cards in order to buy in.

and $6.99. I couldn’t believe it! And I don’t know how you prepare your rice and beans, but they are the best I’ve ever had. My fajita was delicious and the margarita was fantastic, too. Maria: I know, the beans are so good. I can’t stop eating them. Once I start, that’s it and I don’t like to eat beans because they make me really bad, you know! (Much laughter)

Anne: Talk about a leap of faith! Jose: Yes. I put everything I had down and owned sixty percent of the restaurant in 2011. I bought another ten percent and about a year later I bought the remaining thirty percent.

Anne: I loved it all. Including the chips, which tasted homemade. Does your food represent a certain area of Mexico? Marie: This is more of a Texan style. Jose: And I would say that it’s more off a Northern Mexico style, more Tex-Mex.

Anne: Amazing. How many of your family members work here? Jose: Both my mom and dad work here and they are and were such a great help because I was still going to UMSL at that time.

Maria: The rice and beans are actually a Southern Mexican style and that’s why it tastes so different from any other rice and beans around here. In the north, they add cumin to the rice and I didn’t like that. In the north they also add cumin to the salsa and when I came here, I said, no more cumin! And, no more oregano! We are not an Italian restaurant. I have to love it to serve it. Jose: The guys that we bought this from were from Northern Mexico and when I bought this place it wasn’t doing very well at all. They were losing money and that’s why they sold it to us. So we changed recipes to reflect a little bit of central Mexico, really our food represents many other areas of Mexico. Maria: The only thing I didn’t change was the enchiladas because they are suited for American tastes and our customers really like them. But, I have added different enchiladas that are more Mexican.

Anne: You were so young! How many hours a week are you putting in the restaurant nowadays? Jose: I’m in maybe 45 hours a week but when I first bought 3 Margaritas I was working over 125 hours a week. Maria: I also used to work many hours but just come in mornings to afternoon now. Anne: Had either one of you had any restaurant experience prior to 3 Margaritas? I worked for a company in Mexico City and we served lunches for the employees of that business. Anne: I was in yesterday for lunch and I was really impressed. You have so many lunch specials for just $5.99

Jose: We are working on another menu now and we are slowly adding more dishes. Anne: I know that many of your customers are local to Fenton. Why do you think they keep returning to 3 Margaritas? Maria: We are like a family. We have seen kids grow up here. Jose: We’ve been here nine years and those babies that I used to hold are almost teenagers now. Maria: We have friends who started out as our customers but now I can call them friends. Jose: We have invited customers to our homes and we’ve gone to their homes and we feel so blessed by these friendships. I have a customer that I call Grandma because she is so special to me. Anne: You two are such good, kind people, and it is really heartwarming. I want to ask, which dishes are your most popular? Jose: The Fat Burrito and the Tacos Al Pastor are very popular dishes. Maria: We are going to be offering even more tacos! I have invented a taco called Taco St. Louis and we will be adding French fries and Pico de Gallo to the tacos...delicious. So, there will be lots of new items to try very soon.

NEW YEAR’S FINANCIAL RESOLUTIONS by Jeff Ponte - Financial Advisor

Now that 2015 is upon us, you may be thinking about making some New Year’s resolutions. Perhaps you’ll decide to take up a musical instrument, or hit the gym more often, or even learn a new language. All these are worthy goals, of course — but you could also gain some key benefits by working to achieve some financial resolutions. Here are a few to consider: Fill “gaps” in your investment portfolio. From time to time, you — or possibly your financial advisor, if you work with one — might identify “gaps” in your investment portfolio. For example, you might find that you are making insufficient progress

on a key goal, such as saving for a child’s college education. Or you might discover that you need to place additional resources in a particular asset class to achieve proper diversification, which can help reduce the impact of market volatility on your portfolio. (Keep in mind, though, that diversification by itself can’t guarantee profits or protect against loss.) So put “filling portfolio gaps” high on your list of New Year’s financial resolutions. Boost your 401(k) contributions. If your salary has gone up with the New Year, consider boosting your contributions to your 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored retirement plan. You may not be able to afford to contribute the maximum annual amount — which in 2015 is $18,000, or $24,000 if you’re 50 or older — but if you increase your contributions every year, you can greatly speed your progress toward your retirement savings goals. You can put this New Year’s resolution into effect by contacting your human resources or benefits department as soon as you get back to work in 2015. Eliminate “unhealthy” investment habits. As part of your

general New Year’s resolutions, you may have decided to cut back on “carbs” and sugar-laced soft drinks, with the expectation that these moves could help your overall health. But you can also make “unhealthy” financial moves, such as chasing after “hot” stocks (which may already have cooled off by the time you find them) or selling quality investments just because their price has temporarily dropped. Strive to focus more intently on your longterm investment strategy, as opposed to reacting to short-term stimuli. Review your estate strategy. During any given year, you might experience major changes in your life — marriage (or remarriage), new child, new home, etc. — and these changes will have profound effects on your estate plans. But whether or not you encountered any of these events in 2014, it’s a good idea to look over your estate planning documents* — such as a will, living trust, power of attorney and so forth — to make sure they are still current with your wishes. It’s especially important to update beneficiary designations on your insurance policies and retirement accounts so that they are aligned

Financial Solutions for a Better Tomorrow

with the wishes you have expressed in your will. And if you haven’t drawn up your estate plans* yet, make a New Year’s resolution to do so in 2015 — because it’s never too soon to take the steps necessary to protect your loved ones in the future. Unlike some New Year’s resolutions, these financial ones won’t require a big shift in your lifestyle. But if you can stick to them, they can make a big difference in your life.

SAVE THE HOME AND STILL QUALIFY FOR MEDICAID by Mark Easley, Attorney at Law At our firm, we often see clients who have moved in with an aging parent to care for them for years before their care needs become too great and skilled nursing at a facility is required. In many cases these clients qualify for the Child Caretaker Exception when applying for Medicaid. Medicaid Rules and the Child Caretaker Exception There is a provision in the Federal Law (42 U.S.C. 1396p(c)(2)(a)) which is binding in Missouri. If a child moves back home to care for a parent, and if that child’s care has kept the parent out of a nursing home for at least two years, then the home may be given to the child without Medicaid penalties. Steps to Qualifying the Child Caretaker Exception There are three basic steps to qualifying for the Child Caretaker Exception: 1. Establishing that a parent required a high level of care for

the duration of the two year period 2. Establishing that the bulk of the care necessary to assist the parent was provided by the adult child 3. Establishing that the adult child lived in the home for the entire two year period. Establishing Need for Care and Meeting that Need A simple blanket statement will not suffice. A very detailed statement should be prepared by the Child Caretaker explaining their parent’s need for care that notes specific events. The best thing would be to keep a log or journal that sets forth specific instances or events that, but for the Child Caretaker’s care, might have resulted in the parent’s institutionalization. For instance, things such as gas burners not being shut off, water left running in the tub, wandering or other medically dangerous actions should be noted. The best way to establish the need for care would be to obtain an

opinion from an attending physician stating that the parent was in need of care for at least two years. If unable to obtain a physicians opinion, the opinion of any other healthcare professional (nurse, nursing home administrator, social worker) can be used to establish such a need for care. In addition, it is strongly encouraged to obtain statements from other family members and/or neighbors familiar with the parent’s situation. There is no rule as to how many opinions should be obtained, but of course, more is always better. Establishing Residence in the Parent’s Home DFS is very tough on establishing that the child lived in the home when assessing the applicability of the Child Caretaker Exception. This is why it is extremely important to get the statements from family, friends, and neighbors not only stating the parent’s need for care, but also

confirming that the Child Caretaker did live there for two years or longer. Wrap Up A qualified elder law attorney can assess if your family would qualify for this or any other exemptions when applying for Medicaid. Judy’s Tips For January Checklist For Winter Weather Walking

Staying safe during the season of ice and snow is VERY important! Considering approximately 1 in 3 people over age 65 fall each year, minimizing your risks could keep you out of the hospital. The most obvious first item on a checklist is to watch the weather reports and stay inside when storms are predicted. The next few items involve your shoes— they should have a low heel, and have tread. If your shoes are a little too big, wear an extra pair of socks or use an insert so your feet don’t slide. If the soles are smooth, attach ice grippers. Next on the checklist— planning! If you are exiting a car you should pause for a moment, and take a deep breath before starting out. This

helps improve balance when it’s slick and gives your eyes time to adjust to brightness changes. If you want fancy shoes, bring them, but wear the safe ones. If it’s sunny and snowy, wear sunglasses to reduce glare. If it is slick, let someone else carry things (free hands helps improve balance— don’t put your hands in your pockets), or else use a cart that helps improve your balance. If you use a cane, you can attach a winter base. Also, always have a fully charged cell phone when leaving the house because a fast response to a fall can help minimize the long term consequences. Last on the checklist is walk safely. That means take small steps in as much of a straight line as

15∙ ACTIVE LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE ∙ JANUARY 2015 ∙ www.activelifestylesmag.com

possible. If it looks slippery, test the next step with your toe before you put your full weight on your foot. Do not overextend your reach or twist as you could lose your center of balance. Don’t hold on to anything unstable as you are walking - including other seniors. Stay safe this winter! In the meantime, stay safe out there, and Happy new Year! Until next month,

Judy!

LONGEVITY WELLNESS CENTER OPENING IN KIRKWOOD

Introducing Longevity Wellness Center, Kirkwood’s brandnew wellness facility. Created by Christi Gleason, a fitness professional with over 20 years of industry experience, LWC is anything but traditional. Having settled in St. Louis in 2007 after numerous relocations nationwide, LWC was created as the result of Christi’s observation of much-needed change in the fitness industry. Gone are the days where fit, young professionals dominate the exercise world. As America’s obesity epidemic fails to disappear, doctors implore their patients to make permanent lifestyle changes. Obesity does not discriminate, yet little guidance is available to the third of the US population searching for tangible assistance. Retirees are

integrating exercise into their lives in hopes of growing old gracefully. With all of these changes, one would think that the average gym would look much different than it did 20 years ago. Unfortunately, the fitness industry has failed to evolve despite the clear need for change. Fitness professionals frustrated with the industry’s failure to attract more participants have responded by adding new programs with names like “Insanity” and “Deep Extreme” in hopes that the excitement of a new challenge will attract new clients. For the novice exerciser, such classes invite only fear. At LWC, Christi believes the way to welcome new participants is by offering instructor-led programs that will introduce safe and effective ways to start moving. Programs are

offered at a tiered level so individuals at every level are able to participate, including those confined to a wheelchair or unable to walk without the assistance of a cane or walker. In fact, entry-level exercise programs are conducted entirely from a chair so that individuals can become more familiar with movement before bringing in the element of balance. Individuals are able to advance as their confidence increases and abilities improve, and classes focus not only on the basics of improving strength, endurance, flexibility, body composition, and bone density, but also integrate strategies for disease prevention and dealing with chronic pain. Individuals with exercise experience facing challenges such as injuries or surgery will also have opportunities to work within their

comfort zone, being given options and support. Programs will also be available for those who come in injury-free and wish to remain that way. In addition a behavior-based weight management program is offered to all students as part of facility membership. LWC offers full facility program membership. Memberships for individuals wanting to attend once or twice a week are also available, in addition to punch cards and daily passes. Christi’s hope is to be able to offer people numerous options that are affordable so more people can have the opportunity to exercise. She finds the greatest joy in seeing her students come to enjoy exercising and looking forward to spending their free time with her. (SEE DISPLAY AD BELOW)

PRESERVE MEMORIES AND INSPIRE READERS WORLDWIDE by Mike Stith, Gateway To Dreams

The story of my mother’s life and passing was a key inspiration in my life, and fueled my passion to create the OneLegacy.com community. It all began with a few simple questionsâ€Ļ She and I sat together quietly for several days in the hospital prior to her admission to hospice. Not a lot needed to be said at that point, but I was compelled to learn more about her past. Questions like “What was your favorite song?” With very little hesitation, she said “Judy Garland’s Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” “What was your favorite pet?” Again, without wavering, “Little Bit” (a little fluffy Shiatsu), she answered. As we talked, I noticed her spirits improving. Each answer included a different story about her life, and I learned things about her that I never knew before. I was aware of her coming alive as she talked and responded to being asked about her life. It was then I learned the true value of telling our stories. Take a minute to ask a simple question, and be marveled by the energy and spirit that is generated. I was inspired to capture and learn more about my heritage. Stories like these are the

reason we founded www.onelegacy. com, a global story-sharing project, a digital publishing platform, and an online community of individuals who are interested in reading and sharing stories about personal legacy. These real stories connect us and remind us of the pivotal moments and lessons in our lives. We believe that by sharing these stories, our community will be inspired, motivated and healed. PEACE AND HOW TO ACHIEVE IT by Jean Walters

Stress is created in the mind. Situations do not create stress, your beliefs about them do. Jim sees a yard full of leaves and starts pressuring himself to rake it. Meanwhile, his next-door neighbor, Harry, observes the same sight, and, recognizing he has other priorities, walks right past, without guilt or consternation. Jim can’t release the obsession to clean up the mess. Harry has no pressure because he has placed his peace of mind ahead of the yard waste. Jim’s belief that in order to be a good person, you must have a clean yard plagues him. Even though, he knows there is no time for yard work, he

ī€ī€‚ī€ƒī€„ī€„ī€… ī€ī€‚ī€ƒī€„ī€„ī€… ī€…ī€…ī€…ī€†ī€‡ī€ˆī€‰ī€Šī€‹ī€… ī€…ī€…ī€…ī€†ī€‡ī€ˆī€‰ī€Šī€‹ī€… ī€ī€Œī€ī€‹ī€‡ī€…ī€†ī€Œī€ī€Žī€‹ī€ī€ī€„ī€…ī€‘ī€ƒī€Žī€Šī€„ī€‹ī€… ī€ī€Œī€ī€‹ī€‡ī€…ī€†ī€Œī€ī€Žī€‹ī€ī€ī€„ī€…ī€‘ī€ƒī€Žī€Šī€„ī€‹ī€… ī€’ī€“ī€“ī€Œī€”ī€•ī€ˆī€–ī€‰ī€Šī€…ī€’ī€—ī€ˆī€”ī€‹ī€˜ī€Šī€Žī€‹ī€„ī€…ī€‘ī€Œī€”ī€…ī€ī€Šī€Žī€ƒī€Œī€”ī€„ī€…ī€… ī€’ī€“ī€“ī€Œī€”ī€•ī€ˆī€–ī€‰ī€Šī€…ī€’ī€—ī€ˆī€”ī€‹ī€˜ī€Šī€Žī€‹ī€„ī€…ī€‘ī€Œī€”ī€…ī€ī€Šī€Žī€ƒī€Œī€”ī€„

is burdened. Instead, he could focus on matters at hand. This would necessitate self-discipline and a redefinition of the prerequisites to being a “good person”. Beliefs of this sort, and the ensuing pressure they create, keep the mind disorganized. Contrarily, peace can be achieved by making it the priority. Let yourself off the hook. What’s more important than peace of mind? Putting peace at the top of your list makes sense. Many are unwilling to put themselves on their list at all, much less at the top. “I’ll get to my needs when everything else is finished.” ī€ī€Œī€ī€‹ī€‡ī€…ī€†ī€Œī€ī€Žī€‹ī€ī€ī€„ī€…ī€‘ī€ƒī€Žī€Šī€„ī€‹ī€… ī€ī€Œī€ī€‹ī€‡ī€…ī€†ī€Œī€ī€Žī€‹ī€ī€ī€„ī€…ī€‘ī€ƒī€Žī€Šī€„ī€‹ī€… It’s no surprise then, when the day ī€’ī€“ī€“ī€Œī€”ī€•ī€ˆī€–ī€‰ī€Šī€…ī€’ī€—ī€ˆī€”ī€‹ī€˜ī€Šī€Žī€‹ī€„ī€…ī€‘ī€Œī€”ī€…ī€ī€Šī€Žī€ƒī€Œī€”ī€„ī€… ī€’ī€“ī€“ī€Œī€”ī€•ī€ˆī€–ī€‰ī€Šī€…ī€’ī€—ī€ˆī€”ī€‹ī€˜ī€Šī€Žī€‹ī€„ī€…ī€‘ī€Œī€”ī€…ī€ī€Šī€Žī€ƒī€Œī€”ī€„ī€… is over, you’re still waiting your turn.

If we each dedicated an hour daily to creating peace of mind, the world would be calmer, brighter, and more hopeful. Leisurely walk, appreciate the sunshine, glorify in nature, sit quietly, fantasize a perfect life, read a positive book, smell the flowers, breathe deeply, write yourself a love note, meditate. The possibilities are endless. Often, this kind of restructuring takes place when illness strikes in a family. Suddenly the messy yard, dusty furniture, or other important work lose significance. Health comes first. There is no guilt as tasks are ignored. The patient comes first (perhaps you are the patient). Don’t

wait for an emergency to include yourself on the priority list. Do anger, people pleasing and worry about the neighbors come before generating calmness? What beliefs do you hold that interfere with serenity? Jean Walters has been in private practice in the St. Louis area for over 35 years. She provides Transformational/Empowerment Coaching and Akashic (psychic) readings. If you are not where you want to be, and you are ready to change to move forward, call her at 314 991 8439 office or jean@ spiritualtransformation.

Adopt

Me!

All Paws Rescue, Inc. is an all volunteer non-profit animal rescue organization based in St. Charles County, Missouri. Our mission is to rescue homeless, abused and neglected dogs and cats, provide any necessary medical care or behavioral help they need, and then place them into loving permanent homes. All Paws is made up entirely of foster homes, which allows us to better evaluate each animal and place them in homes that are well-suited to their needs and the needs of their future owners. All animals are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, heartworm tested (dogs) or FIV/FeLV tested (cats), and microchipped before being placed for adoption. In addition to our adoption program, All Paws also offers multiple services to our community, including low-cost spay/neuter services and placement assistance for owners needing to re-home their pets. website www.allpawsrescue.info

TEXAS RANGER - A SUCCESSFUL RESCUE STORY Ranger was found under a bridge on a gravel road in rural Missouri on December 2nd. We don’t know if he was thrown from a car, thrown from the bridge or possibly hit by a car on the bridge and fell. And we don’t know how long he was there alone in the cold. He was taken to the small shelter down in the country and made the trek to St. Louis to get the specialized surgery that he needs then placed in a special needs rescue - SNUGGLE. Along with other injuries he has a cracked palette and a badly broken leg. He is a very sweet boy and even, with pain that he must be in, has been very tolerant and stoic with his handlers. His surgeries went well but he is still having problems using his leg. Hopefully there is no permanent nerve damage. When he is released, he will be fostered through All Paws Rescue. Please keep our boy “Texas Ranger” in your thoughts and prayers. If you would like to contribute to his vet care, call All Paws Rescue.

izzy

buddy

Buddy is a 3 year old Shepherd mix. Buddy is a very sweet and loving dog and is also loyal to his owner. He loves to go for walks and rides in the car. He can be somewhat energetic but he can also be a lazy boy! Buddy is house-trained and crate trained, and he loves kids! He is good with small dogs, and may do okay with larger dogs with a slow introduction.

IZZY is a lovable 8 year old toy poodle who is looking for her perfect home. She weighs about 7 pounds and is housebroken and crate trained. Izzy is very mellow and would love a quiet home to lounge around in. Izzy doesn’t mind the company of other dogs, but she wants her personal space to be respected. She came to All Paws with a mouth full of rotten teeth which have now been removed. Even though she is toothless she can eat regular small breed kibble softened with a little water. Izzy also has a weak trachea, which means she cannot wear a collar (only a harness) and must maintain a healthy weight. If you have any questions please contact jeanine.rescue@gmail.com

tank

TANK is beautiful 8 year old male pit bull. He will lick your face and give kisses until you make him stop. Unfortunately his owner passed away, so he is in need of a loving family. He does not like cats. He does like female dogs, unsure about males. He loves to play with Kong toys and he walks on a treadmill, not that he likes it but he does it for the special treat after. Great temperament. Loves people. He thinks everyone wants to rub his belly. He needs to be crated if leaving since he has separation anxiety and will urinate. If you like to learn more, or would like to meet Tank text or call Brian and 314.952.9408.

rudy

RUDY is a 6 year old Jack Russell Terrier Very sweet and active 6 year old Jack Russell Terrier. He is house trained and good with older children. I do not know how he is with younger children. He gets along with other dogs and would need another dog to play with to burn off some of his energy.
