Holiday time at last! Throughout a busy working year, we all look forward to the summer months. These are the months that are teeming with fun days out with the family, unexpected barbecues with friends, neighbourhood parties and festivals. But topping the list of the summer programme for most of us has to be a well-deserved holiday. We work hard all year round so that we can get away from it all in the summer months without having any worries. But to be able to leave with true peace of mind, it’s important to be well prepared. Especially when you’re planning to drive to your holiday destination by car. Here at LeasePlan, we feel that the driver’s safety is of paramount importance and this is why we’re putting the spotlight on driving holidays in this issue of Intentions. In a handy overview, you’ll find everything you need to know about the laws of the road in our neighbouring countries. And we’ll also give you some tips on preparing your car for the journey. You should also try out our quiz to test yourself on whether you’re still up to date with important traffic rules. Certainly something you should look at when planning to take the car. Did you know that your smartphone can also be a convenient tool during your trip? There are a number of apps that can help you get to your destination. And once you’ve arrived, there are other apps that can provide assistance. The majority of people will already have booked their holiday destination well in advance, but if you’re still undecided, be sure to check out the Escape column, where you can get a taste of a few top destinations. The whole LeasePlan team wishes you a carefree holiday! Pleasant reading! Michel Van den Broeck Managing Director LeasePlan

SAFER IN TRAFFIC WITH SAFEPLAN LeasePlan is also very concerned about your safety. This is why we have introduced the SafePlan programme, a new initiative which helps drivers develop their driving skills and adopt a safe driving style when confronted by risky situations. SafePlan goes much further than the traditional one-off courses and we ensure that each driver is provided with assistance throughout the lifetime of his or her lease car. Each participant on the programme will be individually coached and evaluated by means of a test drive. And they’re also taught how to deal with such things as stress and distraction when driving. SafePlan will be officially launched after the summer.

suggests that these producers only develop cars, quite the opposite is true. Over the years, many manufacturers have also produced accessories and gadgets, whether it be mugs, caps or calendars. But a few of them have taken a more original course. And where did it all begin? With the pepper mills of Peugeot.

The virtual vision of MINI A few years ago it seemed that Google Glass would be the must-have gadget of 2015, but nothing could be further from the truth. The concept appears to have now fizzled out. But it’s a gap in the market that MINI wants to fill with the MINI Augmented Vision system. At first sight, we’re not really ecstatic about the design. And even though they look more like stylish ski glasses than a technological tour de force, this is precisely what they are. These MINI glasses, which don’t actually look so ‘mini’, serve as an additional aid to driving the hip city car. They can be used, for example, as a GPS, but also for scouring the internet – if you have a Wi-Fi connection – for the perfect place to have lunch. Once you’re on the road, the MINI glasses indicate the current and permitted speeds, conveniently below your field of view. And this also immediately makes these glasses a lot safer than the current generation of standard GPS systems, which require momentarily taking your focus off the road and looking next to you. Even though driving with glasses like these on will take a little getting used to…
BMW i Pedelec We’re used to BMW being on the ball, and that can certainly be said about their electric cars, the i3 and i8. Real showpieces with an original look and the technology to go with it. But did you know that BMW has also ventured into designing electric folding bicycles? BMW has introduced the i Pedelec (Pedal Electric Cycle) as an urban mobility solution. This handy electric folding bike can even be stored in the rather small boot of the BMW i3, which means that you can park the car and continue your journey on the feather-light two-wheeler. The electric boost it gives means that there’s no need to reach your destination in a sweat. We do, however, have our doubts about whether it’s intended to be used for greater distances, although, that said, the i Pedelec does have a range of 25 to 40 kilometers. Whenever you brake or go downhill, the motor acts as a generator and supplies the battery with energy. Compact and green: the future of urban traffic. Talk about being on the ball!

Murciélago was a mythical fighting bull which refused to go down.
Where Ferrari has a prancing horse, Lamborghini has a fighting bull in its logo. Porsche sought it in the racing world, while Rolls-Royce sees ghosts.
Lamborghini: powerful, agile and fast In the 1950s, Ferruccio Lamborghini (born 1916) was a successful tractor manufacturer with a great passion for sports cars. When in 1962 he had to return his newly bought Ferrari to the factory for repair four times within a short period, he’d had enough. He went to Enzo Ferrari, who lived less than 40 kilometres away, to lodge his complaint. Ferrari, who was 20 years his senior, was anything but impressed and palmed him off with something freely translated as: ‘Just stick to your tractors and leave sports cars to those who know something about them’. Lamborghini’s feelings were deeply hurt and he decided to give Ferrari tit for tat by designing his own sports cars. At least that’s how the story goes. He then found the perfect embodiment of his sports cars in the Spanish fighting bull: powerful, agile and fast. In 1966, Lamborghini struck his first blow with the gorgeous Miura, the fastest and most exotic car the world had ever seen. At the time, the Miura stud farm in Seville was the supplier of the most famous and notorious bulls in the bullring. Diablo, Murciélago, Huracan and Aventador all owe their names to mythical fighting bulls. Murciélago was the only bull ever whose life was spared in the bullring. This was done as a tribute, because even after being wounded 24 times by the matador, he was still standing.
Rolls-Royce and the underworld Manchester, 1904. Car salesman Charles Rolls and car designer Henry Royce were first introduced to each other by a mutual acquaintance. Rolls was so impressed with the first car that Royce had built that he decided to take all of Royce’s cars and sell them exclusively. The Rolls-Royce brand was born. Whereas many car makes get their inspiration from the animal kingdom, Rolls-Royce has a clear penchant for the mystical. Ghost, Phantom, Wraith (Old Scots word for spirit or ghost), and even the Spirit of Ecstasy, the mascot on the bonnet of every Rolls, are all names with a clear link to the underworld.
The story behind the Porsche 911 The most iconic German sports car is without doubt the Porsche 911. Originally, it was going to be called the Porsche 901, but seeing that Peugeot already owned the rights to model names with a zero in the middle and was threatening to take further action, it was renamed 911. Famous offshoots of the 911 are the 911 Targa and the 911 Carrera. The former stands out for its distinctive roof bar (used for the first time in 1966) and was named after the Targa Florio, the legendary road endurance race in Sicily that was held between 1906 and 1977 and which Porsche won on numerous occasions. For the origin of the name Carrera, we have to cross over the pond to Mexico, which, between 1950 and 1954 and again from 1988 until today, has been the stage of another illustrious road race: the Carrera Panamericana.
