DR. ED M. LAURENA

e praise and thank God for His empowering fire of revival and transforming warmth of fellowship, which are always available for us His children, whatever the season is. As this month’s weather temperature rises up, we are charged to be spiritually fiery through studying God’s Word, seeking His ways, and staying in His will. These are what we must be busy with for the decisive, diligent and determined “Demonstration of Discipleship,” which is our Sunday School theme this May. I believe that those of you who participated and supported your Sunday School class retreats and our church sportsfest had enjoyed genuine Christian fun, with inspiring fellowship, and gracious fulfillment of being edified by God’s people, and of being exhorted through His Word. Likewise, I rejoice with those who sacrificially, yet, cheerfully gave their commitments for our Nehemiah Project. Surely, the Lord acknowledges what we do for Him heartily. This week is another opportunity for us to show our discipleship cause and concern through our Daily Vacation Bible School. I encourage everyone to involve in God’s work, invest in His kingdom, and invite children and their families to come to the Saviour for them to grow in His grace. Together, by God’s power and guidance, “let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not” (Galatians 6:9).

Thank God – 1 Corinthians 15:57 “But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” 5. Witness for the truth - Titus 1:13 “This witness is true. Wherefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith.” 7. Think of truth – 2 Corinthians 10:5 “Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;” 1 John 5:9 “If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater: for this is the witness of God which he hath testified of his Son.”

Church Sports Fest 2014 Energetically Enjoyed on Labor Day

AKING ADVANTAGE OF the National Labor Holiday last May 1 Thursday, eleven fellowshipping churches and missions led by their respective Pastors and Preachers trooped to the gymnasium grounds of Colegio de San Pedro for CBBC's yearly Recreational Sporting Festivity. Attended by exuberant and eager groups from CBBC San Pedro, CBBC-CSI Taguig, CBBC Manila, CBBC Sta. Cruz, CBBM Lipa, CBBM Noveleta, CBBC Sto. Tomas, CBBC Tanza, CBBC Calauan, CBBCO Dasmarinas, CBBC Los Banos, and our dear brethren from the Deaf and Mute group, the event startedoff with Christian sportsmanship exhortation by our beloved Pastor, Dr. Ed Laurena. Primarily aiming for godly Christian camaraderie and not competition, Dr. Ed started the event with a word of prayer and an emphatic reminder from the Scriptural passage of I Timothy 4:8 “For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come.” The players were encouraged to have good teamwork, display amiable spirit, and to enjoy the event in a manner that is godly as godliness is profitable unto all things... sports festivities included. The excited players were demographically grouped into ten teams by location to be represented in three categories: Juniors/ Kids, Young People/Working, and Adults/Seniors. As difficult as it is to put together a big event with so limited preparation and planning, the coordinators and assistants were able to put together a relatively orderly sporting event to inspire the brethren in a spirit of unity and challenge to put out their prowess in the event they chose to participate in. While it was a delight to see the children try their youthful attempts at table tennis and kickball, it was equally a blessing to see our jewel senior citizens sparring in agility and energy with the other players. The victors in each event were well-represented from each of the participating teams but the major events of basketball and volleyball were led to championship by the CBBC-CSI Taguig group. CBBC Los Banos and CBBC Sto. Tomas were in close second and third, respectively in the volleyball arena. Brainy board games were won by CBBC-Sta. Cruz and CBBC Tanza Cavite. The details of champions and placers in the respective events are available from the Event Coordinator Rev. Duke Lumictin. Albeit a positive physical exhaustion for an entire day's rally of sporting activities, there was an energetic spirit of camaraderie and competitive fun as the brethren had the chance to see and play with good folks and friends from other churches to touch base and catch up. In closing at past 7:00pm, Dr. Ed challenged the participants to carry the same (if not more) zeal and fervency to their respective soulwinning and witnessing endeavors for the work of the Lord.

Jolly 60’s Class Retreat Jubilantly Held

ORE THAN 50 members of the Jolly 60’s Sunday School Class, composed of our church’s precious jewels, the Senior Citizens, jubilantly held their retreat on April 29, 2014 at the Esquivel's Garden Resort at Villa Olympia, City of San Pedro. The day started with a short devotion, entitled the Biblical Fellowship, delivered by Bro. Chito Coronel. He stressed what a real fellowship accomplishes and its purpose, as he differentiated, among others, entertaining and hospitality according to the Scriptures. After a light snack was served, the group fun began. Nanay Maria (at 83) led the swimming, floating gracefully in her Baptist attire. Another interesting game was also introduced by Rev. Rey Calma who also acted as the judge for the games. It was followed by a lunch break showing God’s bounty as food was flowing the Baptist way. The event did not end without our beloved Pastor fellowshipping with our Senior Citizens. He stayed for more than an hour, thanked the group for supporting the church program, encouraged the Senior Citizens to be a faithful and strong prayer warrior of our church, and prayed for the group's requests and church concerns and events.

Ministry in Age 6 Class

F

orty to fifty smart girls and boys gather every morning at the garage of Rev. Sibug’s residence for their Sunday School Class. With seven of their teachers headed by Ma’am Mikee Sales, these children maximize approximately three hours of togetherness in having fun and enjoyment with the Word of God, games and lively action songs. They may have the typical line up of lessons just like the remaining kindergarten departments, i.e., Ages 4 and 5; but mind their 11 o’clock habit every Sunday! They allot such time for prayer as they consider their families, teachers, classmates and even the ministries of this church. It was a great practical influence of the Bible in their lives. To God be the glory for the Church’s impact to their aspirations for the future.

But Jesus turned him about, and when he saw her, he said, Daughter, be of good comfort; thy faith hath made thee whole. And the woman was made whole from that hour. - Matthew 9:20

The Faith That Made Us Whole

T

HE WOMAN IN this account was that who bled for twelve long years. This disease was reckoned by the Jews to be unclean as in Leviticus 15:25 “…all the days of the issue of her uncleanness shall be as the days of her separation: she shall be unclean.” Being so, she was unwilling to approach Jesus or even to touch His person. Her disease was incurable, she lost all her property and found no relief (Mark 5:26). Though she was sore afraid to come to Jesus, she had no other hope but the power that only Jesus can heal her. The impure nature of her disease pushed her to think that He would be offended that she touched Him. She was resolved in mind and heart that even if only the hem of His garment she can touch, she shall be made free from such bondage. Jesus hath seen this great faith. Although for many, the woman can never find healing, by God’s word of comfort, the fears of the woman were silenced and she was sent away in peace. Jesus discharged her from being in shame for twelve weakening years. Her faith and confidence in the Lord paved the way for her restoration. Being called “Daughter,” Jesus recognized her tremendous step of strong belief in God’s power which would not be manifested if faith did not come out. Every one of us carries a history of bondage in sin and shame, but thanks be to God that it was superseded by God’s testimony of salvation and transformation in our lives. By faith, we trigger God’s mighty power to work in us, thus made us whole again. As we, therefore, have our respective salvation stories, let it testify continually how God brought us from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God (Acts 26:18).

THE BLESSINGS OF DISCIPLESHIP

Luke 14:27 “And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple.”

HETHER WE CHOOSE to or not, our lives are being scrutinized, both by the unbelieving world and our fellow brethren in Christ. No matter how fiercely we guard our privacy, we will always be watched, either as an object lesson for admonition or as a shining example for emulation. It is therefore very crucial that we take good care of how the outside world perceives us. In a world of changing values and collapsing morals, it is vitally important that God’s people walk with a shining public testimony. The Apostle Paul instructed Timothy how to behave “in the house of God” which is the “pillar and ground of the truth” (1 Timothy 3:15). Proverbs 22:1 says, “A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold.” Our name is that which is known without, but that name will only reveal decisions that we have made within—our hearts. This is why David, a man after God’s own heart, said in Psalm 51:10, “Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.” The Church is commanded to have a good testimony. This is precisely what Jesus was teaching in Matthew 5:14–16, when He said, “Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” We cannot bring glory to Christ if we do not have a good name; and we cannot have a good name if we do not show an impeccable public testimony. Let us always remember that we must act, react and attire appropriately. We must never allow ourselves to be placed in a situation that does not look right. We could potentially damage our church’s testimony and harm the cause of Christ. Let us always remember that we must stay involved as “Salt and Light.” Although it may be difficult to minister in a diverse society, our public testimony makes the most impact when it is most needed. “Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt

have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.”—Matthew 5:13. The audience who first heard these words in verses 10-12 had heard instruction on when (not if) persecution would come, since it is certain that persecutions will come. It was not easy to be salt and light in the first-century Roman Empire, but the early church did it. We have known so little of what can be called real persecution here in San Pedro, Laguna that we do not value the truth as we should. We are quick to justify why our salt has lost its zest and why our lights do not shine rather than ask and evaluate ourselves on what we can do to be a stronger influence and impact on our society. Let us always remember that we must stand on the Biblical position on issues of the day. One of the clever moves of those who seek to undermine truth is to attach moral views to political issues. It is a prejudice to argue that one political or moral stand is better than the other. However, it is biblical to stand on the truth that abortion is murder and same-sex marriage is sinful. Christians need to understand that the Bible speaks to the moral issues of the day. When these issues arise on situations and locations where God has providentially placed us, we should be a testimony and explain to others from a biblical viewpoint. Since time immemorial, we Biblical Christians did not have a moral majority, to the extent that we did not even have a political voice. The New Testament records in sharp detail the suffering that the early Christians endured at the hands of the government. “And others had trial of cruel mockings and scourgings, yea, moreover of bonds and imprisonment: They were stoned, they were sawn asunder, were tempted, were slain with the sword: they wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins; being destitute, afflicted, tormented; (Of whom the world was not worthy:) they wandered in deserts, and in mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth.”—Hebrews 11:36–38. Yet these cruel yet heroic public testimonies have been the driving force and inspiration for the perpetuity of our precious Christian faith. Nonetheless, it is needful to say that the strength of the New Testament church has never stood in culture’s acceptance. It has always stood on God’s Word and in the Holy Spirit’s power. With these, we can continue show an impeccable public testimony in a decadent society. It could be that our testimony may be the only factor hindering or propelling others to the saving knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ and a changed life for God’s glory. Let us be God’s testimony this side of heaven!
