A Holistic Approach to Architecture | BY HELÉNE RAMACKERS

E

nsuring a holistic approach to architecture, Peter Pichler not only perceives the construction of a building as a frozen moment in culture, he surmises it through contemporary reinterpretations. Juxtaposing nature, heritage and culture into visionary projects, he creates spaces that exemplify a modern-day feel. Peter, tell us a bit about yourself. I studied Architecture at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna, graduating with distinction in the masterclass of Zaha Hadid, as well as in the United States at the University of California (UCLA). After two internships at Delugan Meissl in Vienna and OMA/Rem Koolhaas in Rotterdam, I started to work at Zaha Hadid Architects in London. In 2015, I founded Peter Pichler Architecture in Milan together with my wife Silvana Ordinas. When did you realize you want to become an architect? I attended a very technical high school in Italy and after that, I did not know what I wanted to do … if it was something more technical or something more artistic. At that time, I was lucky to meet the famous artist Walter Pichler, who was a cousin of my father. Walter was a true inspiration for me; he was one of the driving forces of

12 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | SPRING 2021

the Austrian architecture scene. During the 60s and 70s, Walter was part of an important artistic movement in Vienna. He even did some exhibitions with German artist Joseph Beuys and some other well-known international artists. When I met him, he encouraged me to study architecture and to see architecture not just as a technical profession, but as if it could be something else. During your studies, you graduated with distinction in the masterclass of the late Zaha Hadid after which you also worked for her as a project architect post graduation. What are your fondest memories from that experience? The first time I met Zaha, was when I was a second-year student starting an internship in London. I needed to go to the restroom and without realizing it, I used Zaha’s private bathroom. I really thought it was going to be my last day working there as I didn’t know it was for her exclusive use only, but in the end, I worked at her firm for a few years. You started your own firm, Peter Pichler Architecture in 2015 with an amazing portfolio. Which ones have been highlights for you, past and present? Every project is unique and has its own story behind it. Your wife, Silvana Ordinas co-founded your firm with

you. It’s not always easy working with your spouse. How do you resolve work-related issues amicably so that it doesn’t spill over into your home life? We have different roles in the studio. Silvana is responsible for the management of the studio and I’m focused on the architecture projects with the different teams. Of course, we bring work-related issues home, but it’s not a problem for us. Sometimes it’s better to discuss things at home over a cup of tea rather than in the office. How hands-on are you? I am pretty much involved in all design aspects. What is essential for you to incorporate into a design?

Is that something that is often a requirement – ‘greening’ a project? These days yes, and if not, we try to encourage our clients to consider a more sustainable solution. Is modern technology and high-end security also fundamental? Not necessarily. Where is home? Home is Milan. Did you design your own home? No, we did the interiors of the apartment.

The culture of the place.

What is the style of your home?

A client’s input is crucial in your line of work. If the design they want will not work in your years of experience, how do you steer them in the right direction without coming across as pushy?

My wife and I have a classic Milanese apartment in the center of Milan. It has high ceilings and wooden floors, with contemporary furnishings.

Very often we have delicate situations with our clients. We try to understand their point of view, and if we have a different approach, we look for alternatives to find a compromise.

Italian coffee and a good quality weekly German news magazine.

You believe that architecture must have a strong bond with the culture and history of a specific place? Please explain. We start the design process of a project by researching the history and culture of a specific place and then we try to reinterpret their influences in a contemporary way. I assume you work closely with the interior designer on a specific project.

Creature comforts you cannot live without?

A noteworthy project for 2021 is the Tree House project in Dawson Lake, West Virginia in the United States. This is your first endeavor in America. What can people expect from this? We are very curious to understand what hospitality will look like after the pandemic. Moreover, how our project will be perceived in this new reality. We truly believe in this new way of slow tourism with a high connection to nature. How has the pandemic affected your business?

We always do both the architecture and interiors of our projects. We believe that the outcome should be a holistic approach.

We are very fortunate to say that we didn’t experience any change in our business during the pandemic.

What inspires you?

Parting thoughts?

To travel inspires me. To be sitting on a terrace in Ses Covetes, Mallorca. Hand sketching with the sea view.

There are a number of exciting projects on the horizon and we cannot wait to see them complet-ed.

How important is it to incorporate sustainable energy in a home and still have an aesthetically pleasing outcome?

https://peterpichler.eu/

Sustainability is already an approach to our design and will not harm the design but instead, add more value. 16 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | SPRING 2021

JEWELS

SANJAY KASLIWAL

Launched High Jewelry Collection “Bloom” | BY NIKITA VIVEK PAWAR

S

anjay Kasliwal is one among the jewelery connoisseurs to represent Indian craftsmanship on the global map. Regarded as the Indian equivalent to Cartier, the jewelery designer brought together a seamless blend of traditional elements and modern sensibilities.

The high jewelery label is the U.S, division of the renowned Gem Palace in Jaipur, India. Late Sanjay Kasliwal and three brothers make the seventh generation of the Kasliwal family that served as the royal jewelery makers for the royals of Jaipur since 1852. The company has been founded and run by the family for more than 160 years. The brand has also commissioned pieces for the European and Middle Eastern royal along with international style icons like Princess Diana, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and Marella Agnelli. The Creative Director, the designer brought his designs to the United States in 2014. Post his demise in February 2019, Kasliwal’s children, Shalini and Samir took the reign of his brand. The duo unveiled their first collection titled ‘Bloom’ based on the final sketches of their father they discovered last year. Sanjay Kasliwal was immensely inspired by his home-town Jaipur and channelized the

city’s architecture, colors and beauty into his designs. The collection draws inspiration from the Rajasthani capital’s intricate details, gigantic monuments and colorful flora and fauna. The designer’s daughter, Shalini is based in New York while her brother Sameer overseas the Gem Palace in Jaipur. “Bloom exactly represents what nature means to me: harmony of shapes and symphony of colors,” said Shalini Kasliwal. The 26-piece collection comprises the Pink City’s grandeur, tranquility and sophistication and modern aesthetic and setting. The collections render to the larger than life archways of the Amber Fort, the earrings resemble the Tecomella tree commonly found throughout Rajasthan. The collection is a stunning line of rings, bracelets, necklaces and earring set with Mozambican rubies, Zambian emeralds, Sri Lankan sapphires and Tahitian pearls all of which are hand-crafted in the Gem Palace Workshop. The company craftsmen have been with the establishment for generations and still use the same Indian jewelery-making techniques. “It was such a pleasant surprise to stumble upon these sketches from my father,” said Shalini Kasliwal in a statement. “His talent was simply unmatched with no detail ever going unlooked. He had an affinity for

18 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | SPRING 2021

magnificent stones and grandiose designs, which is very much reflected in his last collection. When my brother and I found the sketches, we had an immediate desire to bring his creations to life and couldn’t think of a more appropriate way to honor him.” The $17,500 Juhi ring recreates the magic on dewdrops on a leaf with a 4.24-carat emerald off-set with diamonds on either side. The Udaya necklace set is a quadruple strand of tanzanite and emerald beads with a pair of matching floral earrings while the Harshika necklace features over 1,000 carats of rubellites that are exquisitely strung with pearls. Bloom also consists of stunning cocktail rings, elegant gem-set drop earrings such as the Zaara rubellite earrings that have a hint of Indian tradition in the contemporary setting. The Bicolored gemstones are cut into traditional Indian shapes to create beads, cabochons and traditional solitaire cuts. The rings mostly have diamond pavé while other pieces are paired with diamonds in baguette cuts. The Bloom collection is available at www. sanjaykasliwal.com.

FALCON 6X

The Most advanced business jet from Dassault

| BY SOMNATH CHATTERJEE

S

peed, comfort and range happen to be one of the key factors that business jet owners look out for and the newest offering from Dassault Aviation promises to break new ground in this competitive world of private luxury aviation. Unveiled in Bordeaux-Merignac, France, the Falcon 6X is the latest ultra widebody business jet that joins the Falcon range. Claimed as “their most advanced aircraft yet” the Falcon 6X promises the tallest and widest cabin in business aviation along with a higher level of speed and comfort. It can fly from London to Hong Kong or from Los Angeles to Moscow nonstop with a 5,500 nm (10,186 km) range and top speed of Mach.90. The Falcon 6X can also perform safe approaches as low as only 109 knots, slower than other business jets. It features a flaperon control surface which increases take off and landing control, especially on steep approaches. This allows the 6X, like other Falcons, to safely land in small airports short runways at less than 3,000 feet. Back to the cabin and it is spacious plus configurable according to the owner’s wishes including added privacy with partition areas. The aircraft has a 16-passenger seating capacity with multiple seating zones including a conference room and a large storage place. You also get a large table much like the wide-cabin equipped private jets which makes it more practical. Further convenience is afforded by a large lounging area and of course you can convert it into a bed. It has more glass area too with no less than 30 extra-large windows which gives a

panoramic view. Of course there is mood lighting which is also customizable. Dassault says that the air quality inside the cabin is 10 times better over the minimum requirement. Just like the Falcon aircrafts the 6X shares the same sound-proofing for a quiet cabin. There is also Falcon connect and other amenities on board. The cabin design is sleek too with a luxurious yet modern look. The Falcon 6X also has a digital flight control system with an auto-trim function which removes the need for constant pilot correction. Other features include a flight envelope protection system which removes exceeding structural speed limits and stalling plus hazard avoidance. The 6X also has a vision system called as ‘FalconEye’ which adds extra help in flying in all weather conditions, day and night. Despite Covid-19 and its challenges, Pratt & Whitney Canada completed ground and flight tests of the aircraft’s PW812D engine, thus making it ready for the first flight. The Falcon 6X takes the fight to the likes of Gulfstream and Bombardier with expanding the business-jet market with longrange and wide-cabin aircrafts. With everything on schedule expect it to be ready for certification in two years at an expected price of $47 million plus. The current pandemic has only fueled further demand for private aviation with new customers looking at business jets with long range, bigger seating capacity and also having a certain level of flexibility.

Singer All-Terrain Competition study is The Coolest Car Ever | BY SOMNATH CHATTERJEE

I

f you do not know about Singer and its creations then you have indeed missed out on some of the most beautiful cars ever made. If Porsche 911’s of a certain vintage are alluring to you then the Singer based ‘re-imagined 911s’ are certainly going to make you go weak in your knees. Founded in California in 2009, Singer has catapulted the Porsche 911 into a designer canvas where stunning craftsmanship and materials are lavished onto it with a singular focus towards driving perfection. Singer re-imagined Porsche 911’s are an unique concoction that have taken the collector car world by storm; hence in just a decade, Singer cars are now a ‘must-have’ for any collector. Every car is personalized and the attention to detail is frankly astonishing but the core ethos is always what the Porsche 911 stood for: which is putting the driver at the center. These are more than just a restoration but a ‘restomod’ where modern day engineering is infused into a classic car. Its latest creation has also taken automotive world by storm by imagining what a modern-day 911 rally car would be like. It is called as the ‘All-terrain Competition study’ and based on a client request, they turned an air-cooled Porsche 911 into Dakar ready racer. Porsche has had a history with rallying and its Cayenne is not the only car that they have made that can take on any kind of terrain. Porsche went rallying in the 80’s which resulted in creations like the 911 SC/RS and the 959 rally cars. Singer collaborated with known UK-based Porsche off-road specialists, Richard Tuthil for this car and this car was assembled at the Tuthil facility. The specification sheet seems to be ripped out from a rally spec special with pretty much everything changed from the basic 964 911 donor car.

You have a permanent AWD system along with increased ride height option and suspension travel. Plus like any Singer, lightweight materials including carbon fiber panels are used while the basic structure of the car has been strengthened for heavy off-road use. There are forged aluminum 8x16” wheels with BF Goodrich AllTerrain tires plus the 3.6L twin turbo-charged, air-cooled, Porsche flat-six makes 450hp and 420lb ft torque. The gearbox is also proper race-spec with a 5-speed sequential dog-box enabling flat-shifting. For desert racing there is also a longer range fuel tank installed while the interior gets FIA specification seats and harnesses alongside a full roll cage. Two cars have been commissioned including a Parallax White - focused on highspeed desert rallying and a second – in Corsica Red - made for high-speed racing. The ACS also stays true to the principle of “form follows function” with a brutal yet minimalistic charm courtesy the 959 rally car inspired look. It is clearly designed to win desert races and not sit pretty in the owner’s garage. This also isn’t a one-off as the ACS study would be available to others who would like to convert their 911 into this off-road spec as well. Singer also says that the price for this car ultimately depends on the exact specification being chosen by the owner. Unlike other Singer creations, the ACS probably has drifted towards the extreme with its capabilities and personality but that also makes it one of their best creations. Many important components have been created specifically for this car including the four wheel drive system and the sheer complexity along with the level of fetishes being showered by Singer for the ACS means a car like this will not be made by any mass-market manufacturer. That is the beauty of craftsmanship and bespoke coach-built cars which Singer has brought back in a big way. Amen to that!

PAGANI HUAYRA TRICOLORI is the FabergÉ Egg of the Hypercar World | BY SOMNATH CHATTERJEE

Y

ou cannot accuse the Pagani Huayra for lacking in theatre or pantomime. The successor to the critically acclaimed Zonda, the Huayra has seen various iterations over the years and each one is wilder and even more extreme with a ruthless dedication to art and performance. Pagani Automobili has been known for that and is a major player in the hypercar business with its expertise in design, craftsmanship and state-of-the-art composite materials. No one does carbon fiber in hypercars better than Pagani as does the insane attention to detail which oozes from their cars. The latest one is the Huayra Tricolore and just like the Zonda Tricolore, this special edition is a tribute to the Italian Air Force Aerobatic Team. Revealed on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Frecce Tricolore, only three examples of this hypercar would be built thus making the € 5,500,000 + VAT list price a tad obsolete. In 2010, to celebrate the 50 years, Pagani did the Zonda Tricolore, of which again only three examples were made. Pagani says that amongst all of the Zonda models, this is the most sought after. We would not debate that. Back to the Huayra Tricolore and the MB-339A aircraft of the National Aerobatic Patrol was the biggest inspiration for the design. It gets a new body designed from advanced composite materials while the Pagani V12 engine has been updated for more plus various aeronauticsderived technologies have been poured into the making of this special car. Looking more like a fighter jet, the Huayra Tricolore has a new front bumper with side extractors while there is also a new air scoop and a rear wing. Even the shape of the tail fin is similar to the jet while the new wheels are mimicking the design of a propeller in a turbine. In the center of the front hood there is a Pilot tube, an instrument which allows each aircraft

to measure the macroscopic air speed and, therefore, determine the aerodynamic condition of the aircraft. Of course the most recognizable bit is the livery which is a tricolor. The Huayra Tricolore is powered by the new Pagani V12, the twin-turbo engine specially developed by Mercedes-AMG. The numbers are pure hypercar and while not quite having the Chiron like 1000 plus hp, the 840hp and the 1100Nm of torque makes this one of the fastest cars since it is much lighter. The new chassis is made from the latest generation composite materials, such as Carbo-Titanium HP62 G2 and Carbo-Triax HP62 and that has enabled considerable change to torsional and flexural rigidity. The Tricolore is all about an emotive driving experience hence the usual dual-clutch automatic gearbox has been binned in favor of a sevenspeed sequential gearbox like the standard Huaryra (if such a thing exists). However more than all of that, the fact that something so mundane as the gear knob is carved from a single block of aluminum and carbon while then milled through a five-axis numerical control center plus finally hand polished with the special transparent treatment, shows that how each Pagani car is made with painstaking craftsmanship hence elevating it to a piece of art rather than a mere motor car. There is nothing else like this on the market and it is perhaps staying true to the purest expression of what a hypercar should be. It is not about plain numbers or how fast it would go as how it achieves that speed with raw emotion and how it makes you feel when you clap your eyes at it for the first time is ultimately more important. Job well done on that front, Pagani!

Patek Philippe the Patek Philippe Nautilus 5711/1A is the Most Desired Luxury Sports Watch in the World | BY SOMNATH CHATTERJEE

A

simple design and an elegant shape but the way it has took the watch world by storm is something which has been the stuff of legends. We are talking about the Patek Philippe Nautilus Ref 5711/1A. It is perhaps the most coveted luxury sports watch in the world and now the news of it being discontinued will send collectors and prospective buyers in a tizzy. However there is a rumor of a new model coming in soon but at the moment prices and demand for this iconic timepiece will go through the roof no doubt. The history of this watch is as intriguing as the cult status it has achieved over the years.

blue dial. It has stayed faithful to the original Gérald Genta masterpiece no doubt and that amalgamation of the classic look being mixed with a modern feel led to it being an instant hit.

Designed by Gérald Genta, the original Patek Philippe Nautilus (released in 1976) redefined the luxury sports watch segment and gave buyers another alluring choice along with the Royal Oak by Audemars Piguet. What stays in your mind and what is instantly the most recognizable aspect of this watch is the shape. However what is surprising is that this genre bending and iconic watch was penned by the designer in just a matter of a few minutes when dining just a few meters away from Patek Philippe executives.

Which means this stainless-steel luxury sports watch, costing $30,000, currently trades in the pre-owned market at three times its list price. Stopping production of this blue-dial, steel Nautilus will only increase its collector value further and make it an even more coveted watch. Potential buyers who have been waiting for years and currently have not received a date might have to give up hopes of sporting one on their wrist. Do note that you can still buy the Patek Philippe Nautilus 5711/1R-001 rose gold version but I guess you, just like us, want the iconic steel model, to which we say, form an orderly queue... Other than that as mentioned earlier, there is some light at the end of the tunnel as the luxury watch brand will soon unveil its new line-up and we bet it has a new Nautilus 6711 waiting for us to lapped up!

Then in 2006 the Patek Philippe Ref 5711/1A made its debut and it refined plus honed that iconic shape while being larger plus thicker than the original. The ethos was simple but remained the same over the years with being close to the iconic steel jumbo along with the classic

So much so that it is one of the most popular celebrity watches and the waiting list runs into years with supply unable to meet demand. Apparently the waiting list is nearly 10 years at authorized dealerships and new models only made its way into certain collector hands. Patek Philippe only made a limited number of these watches in stainless-steel in the first place hence the rarity.

A New Richard Mille for Women Has Arrived | BARBARA PALUMBO

When one thinks about high-end Swiss match manufacturer Richard Mille, athletes such as Rafael Nadal or musicians like Jay-Z often come to mind (who could forget his 2.5-million-dollar custom made sapphire Richard Mille watch?). But what many don’t realize is that Richard Mille puts as much emphasis on partnering with women brand ambassadors and puts as much research, time, and effort into creating quality watches for women as they do men. But the brand doesn’t do it because focusing on the women’s market is a “trendy” thing to do. Richard Mille has been doing this for years. A Timeline of Equality Richard Mille and his partner Dominique Guenat launched their first men’s watch – the RM 001 – under the Richard Mille label at the Baselworld Watch and Jewellery Fair in Basel, Switzerland in 2001. Just four years after the original launch, the first Richard Mille watch created for women was released: the RM 007 Ladies Automatic. The RM 007 had the same tonneau case shape as many of the brand’s most recognizable men’s watches, but the women’s watch had smaller dimensions and contained a different rotor than the watches released prior. In 2012, the brand debuted the RM 037 Ladies Automatic timepiece which contained Richard Mille’s first in-house movement, the caliber CRMA1. This automatic winding caliber was crafted from skeletonized grade 5 titanium and boasted a 50-hour power reserve. Aside from those characteristics, the then newly introduced RM 037 offered additional functions which the smaller Richard Mille ladies’ watches didn’t have at the time. The RM 037 was designed with an oversize date, and a function selector, which meant there was no need to pull out the crown to wind or set the watch, thus eliminating the potential damage mechanical watches can sometimes incur (and, let’s face it, many manicures were likely also saved in the process.)

But the brand’s dedication and loyalty to their female clients didn’t stop there. 2014 was dubbed the Richard Mille “Year of the Woman.” It was the first year the brand offered metal bracelets on their timepieces, and originally, that offering was only for their women’s watches. In 2018, Richard Mille released the RM 71-01 Talisman Collection ladies’ timepieces which contained the manufacturer’s first automatic in-house tourbillon. The RM 71-01 was also the first collection designed by Cecile Guenat – the daughter of co-founder Dominique Guenat – who had been designated the first Ladies’ Collection Director. Cecile Guenat has since unveiled the playful Richard Mille Bonbon Collection, which debuted in 2019, as well as the RM 71-02 Talisman which came out in November of 2020. She has also aided in producing variations of existing Richard Mille ladies’ watches, including this newly released RM 037 White Ceramic. A Variation of the Purest Form Like the aforementioned RM 037 released in 2012, this new version also contains the CRMA1 caliber automatic movement, oversize date display at 12 o’clock, and a function selector at 4 o’clock. The function selector is used by the wearer to choose between winding (W), neutral (N), and hand setting (H) actions without having to pull out the watch’s crown. The design of the said crown – which features a patented stem-crown assembly – guarantees the wearer protection from potential damage as the crown is no longer connected to the watch movement, but is rather instead a part of the case, removing the risk of the crown breaking. Aesthetically, this newest version of the RM 037 is as calming as it is complex. The dial and case combine ATZ (Alumina Toughened Zirconia) white ceramic, mother-of-pearl, and

30 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | SPRING 2021

white gold for the first time in a Richard Mille timepiece. Hypo-allergenic and one of the hardest materials in the world, ATZ ceramic is sought after because of its extraordinary resistance to scratches and abrasions, as well as for its even coloring, making it an ideal material for a watch case. In addition to its durability, ATZ ceramic gives off a matte appearance due to the process through which the ceramic is made. For as strong as the material is, to look at it – specifically in this particular shade of bright white – the eye is tricked into thinking the case material is almost soft. And while Richard Mille watches are often referred to as “race cars for the wrist” – and mechanically, this is quite a good metaphor for them – the white ATZ ceramic has a feminine feel to it, which makes the watch more versatile to wear, no matter the occasion (or if there is no occasion), even with the diamond and mother-ofpearl embellishments at the dial’s center. And finally, the skeletonized automatic-winding in-house movement, baseplate, bridges in black PVD-treated grade 5 titanium, and red gold variable-geometry rotor are visible through the watch’s sapphire glass crystal. This new, white ceramic version of the RM 037 has all of the characteristics of the original, ensuring that this ladies’ timepiece collection by Richard Mille continues to be seen as important by watch collectors and enthusiasts around the globe. RYAN SAGHIAN

EARNING HIS STRIPES IN THE WORLD OF INTERIOR DESIGN

| BY HELÉNE RAMACKERS

Despite his youthful looks, Ryan Saghian has many years of experience in the intricacies of what makes a home an amazing abode. Having worked his way up as an intern at the age of 15, his knowledge and design prowess sees him earning his stripes in the world of interior design, heading up his eponymous firm, Ryan Saghian. Ryan, tell us a bit about yourself. I was born and raised in Los Angeles by Iranian immigrants who left after the Iranian revolution of 1979. My father is an architect and my mother a homemaker. They are both my biggest cheerleaders! I found my passion for interiors very early on and began interning for Ron Woodson and Jaime Rummerfield of Woodson & Rummerfield’s House of Design when I was 15. I was committed to stay with them throughout high school. I wanted to learn as much as possible. After my first year of college at the Art Institute of California, I moved up to design assistant and project manager. I had never felt fully accepted before. In high school, I’d always felt out of place. Ron and Jaime got me and understood me, and they saved me in more ways than one. I then launched my own firm out of my parents’ garage when I was 21. Over the last 7 years I have built what many are calling a ‘design empire.’ I am so grateful for my career and daily doing what I am deeply passionate about. In 2016, I opened a flagship showroom, Ryan Saghian Home, at Robertson and Third in Los Angeles, and have since introduced several home collections. Did you have an influence in your youth that shaped your career path? My maternal grandfather had an immense impact on my work ethic and hustle. He was one of the hardest working people I have ever come across. Jaime Rummerfield, my mentor and employer for the first 6 years of my career, was one of my greatest influences. She shared a passion and love for the industry that to this day I haven’t seen matched by anyone else.

32 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | SPRING 2021

You founded your firm Ryan Saghian at the age of 21. Now at 28 years old, what are the advantages and pitfalls of starting out so young? The biggest advantage is the major head start and justifiable mistakes. The pitfalls of starting out so young is earning peoples’ respect. In an industry where years of experience are expected, it was, and at times still is, very difficult to earn your stripes. What and who inspires you? Everything and anything. I know that sounds kind of cliché, but I can be inspired by a piece of art, a building, my cultural background, or even a song. I pull inspiration from everything around me. Do you have a signature style when it comes to interior design for clients? I call it a signature formula. Elegant, glamorous, and layered with a bit of edge. When working with clients, how do you persuade them to see your vision without it coming across as if it’s your idea? Ultimately, it’s always a collaborative process, but it’s always filtered through my creative lens. That is what they come to me for. What are / have been your biggest challenges in your career? Proving to people that my age does not determine my talent and pushing boundaries for the next generation. Important lessons along the way? Love people and stand beside them. The favorite part of your job? The schematic design phase. This is where I let my imagination run wild!

HOME + INTERIORS + DESIGN My bed, my sofa, and my Warhol of HRH Farah Pahlavi of Iran. Talk us through a timeless interior design style. A grand Georgian estate with a black and white checkered foyer, natural walnut flooring, satin black doors, and incredible lighting. I believe a timeless interior is all about the backdrop, but your art, décor, and accessories should be what you love, classic or contemporary. It’s the dramatic mix of self-expression that makes a home timeless to me. Is there a right and wrong when it comes to decorating? Please explain. Decorating for me is intuitive. It is personal and subjective - I don’t believe in rules. With that said, there is a right and wrong when it comes to scale, color theory, and proportion. It is those elements in the execution process that make a space right or wrong. How does one keep things modern / timeless without having to break the bank? By doing it slowly. I would rather have clients invest in quality pieces over the course of time, so you don’t feel like you are breaking the bank. There is no need to rush.

What is the best thing about being at the helm of a principal designer service? Creative control. And the worst? Everything falls on you. Is your home as stunning as those of your clients? I’m thinking of the old proverb of the shoemaker’s children that have no shoes …. hopefully that’s not the case with your abode. Of course! My home is a reflection of me and it is filled with everything that I love. Years ago, I read a quote that said, “I just put everything I love together in one room and it worked,” and that has been my philosophy ever since. Your dream recently came true with the purchase of your white picket fence house. Talk us through the different design elements you incorporated to make the space into a home for you. I am all about eclecticism and juxtaposition. My home is a classic Cape Cod with a white picket fence, but when you walk inside you are presented with an industrial steel and lucite stairway, black rift oak cabinetry, black plaster fireplace, exposed white reclaimed wood ceilings, and bleached white oak floors. My furniture is a mix of mid-century, glamorous regency, and high style modern pieces. I’ve adorned my walls with all types of art and the scent of my Ryan Saghian candles fill the air. What are your favorite rooms in your own home and why? My living room. It has the most personality and it is where I spend the majority of my time when home. What key pieces in your home can you not live without?

36 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | SPRING 2021

Do you believe in re-purposing dated pieces or should one just shop for new ones? It is case by case for me. Occasionally you find a one-of-a-kind piece that you could never reproduce or purchase new. Sometimes you want a piece that is beyond your budget and it makes more sense to buy it used and re-purpose it. I say whatever makes sense is the way to go. You have done some exquisite interiors. Do you have any favorites? Each project is like my baby. I love them all. Have there been projects that you have declined? If yes, why? Yes. If I feel a potential client and I don’t see eye to eye. Or a budget seems unreasonable, then I tend to pass. I want to enjoy each project and if I get a feeling that I won’t, then I save us both the stress. You travel for business, and hopefully pleasure too. Which have been your favorite places to travel to that have left a lasting impression? That is such a hard question, but I would say my favorite places are Istanbul, London, Paris, and Israel. What do you do for fun? Before Covid-19 it was finding new restaurants, traveling as much as I could (even if it was just a day trip), and going dancing. I love to dance! Post Covid, I like to go walking on the beach, vintage shopping, and I started painting again! Any exciting plans on the horizon? Launching my new tile collection for DOMVS and starting a new project in Dallas! https://www.ryansaghian.com/

Archer Aviation‘s eVTOL is the next step towards sustainable travel | BY NIKITA VIVEK PAWAR

T

he amount of pollution in the world in every form and manner needs serious attention to make our future generations lead a better life. Its first step is by moving to alternative energy sources to help preserve fossil fuels and mitigate air pollution. Revolutionizing travel towards sustainability Archer is a leader in the Urban Air Mobility (“UAM”) space commercializing electric vertical takeoff and landing (“eVTOL”) aircraft. The company has entered into a business combination agreement with Atlas Crest Investment Corp, a special purpose acquisition company that would result in Archer becoming a publicly listed company. Post-closing, Archer will be listed on the NYSE with the ticker symbol “ACHR.”

an additional $500 million of aircraft. “Part of how United will combat global warming is embracing emerging technologies that decarbonize air travel. By working with Archer, United is showing the aviation industry that now is the time to embrace a cleaner, more efficient modes of transportation. With the right technology, we can curb the impact aircraft have on the planet, but we have to identify the next generation of companies who will make this a reality early and find ways to help them get off the ground,” said United CEO Scott Kirby. “Archer’s eVTOL design, manufacturing model and engineering expertise has the clear potential to change how people commute within major metropolitan cities all over the world.”

The eVTOL

By 2024, United Airlines along with Mesa Air Group Inc.’s would give passengers a quick, low-emission way to get to airports within the air carrier’s major hubs. Once the aircraft is in operation, United and Mesa plan to invest in a fleet of up to 200 aircraft to be operated by a partner.

The Palo Alto-based startup, led by co-founders and co-CEOs Brett Adcock and Adam Goldstein, was founded in 2018 with a mission to advance the benefits of sustainable air mobility and become the leader in the new era of UAM, a $1 trillion-plus market, according to leading industry research. Archer Aviation is developing the world’s first commercially viable all-electric UAM platform that will move people throughout the world’s cities in a fast, safe, sustainable, and cost-effective manner. The fully electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft is capable to cover a distance of up to 60 miles at 150 mph. It is estimated that Archer’s eVTOL aircraft could reduce CO2 emissions by up to 50% per passenger on a trip between Hollywood and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), which is one of the initial cities Archer plans to launch their fleet and one of United’s largest hubs. A result of a highly accomplished team of top engineering and design talent, with a collective 200+ years of eVTOL experience, are driving this next transportation revolution. The full-scale eVTOL aircraft is expected to be unveiled in 2021. “We founded Archer to address the environmental and societal issues caused by road transportation and urban overloading,” said Archer co-founder and co-CEO Adam Goldstein. “Through our all-electric aircraft, we are striving to curb carbon emissions, decrease traffic, and create the transportation networks of the future. What started with a handshake deal from our lead investor and advisor Marc Lore, Archer’s latest funding and acquisition news brings this vision to life in a big way, enabling us to accelerate the future of sustainable travel at scale.” A step towards sustainability Understanding the importance of decreasing the carbon footprint, Archer Aviation has also signed an aircraft purchase agreement and collaboration agreement with United Airlines as part of the company’s commitment to de-carbonization. As a part of the agreement, United Airlines has placed an order for $1 billion of Archer’s aircraft, with an option for 40 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | SPRING 2021

The Real Deal The transaction values the combined company at an implied $3.8 billion pro forma equity value at the $10.00 per share PIPE price. According to the announcement by United Airlines, the business combination agreement is expected to provide approximately $1.1 billion of gross proceeds to the combined company, including a fully committed $600 million common stock PIPE with participation from leading strategic and financial investors including United Airlines, Stellantis and the venture arm of Exor, Baron Capital Group, the Federated Hermes Kaufmann Funds, Mubadala Capital, Putnam Investments and Access Industries. Additionally, Ken Moelis and affiliates, along with Marc Lore, are investing $30 million in the PIPE. Brett Adcock, Archer’s co-founder and co-CEO commented, “We’re thrilled to partner with Atlas Crest to help accelerate our goals of ushering in the next age of sustainable air mobility and enable human micro-exploration. By merging efforts with an industry innovator like Atlas Crest and one of the most successful entrepreneurs in finance, Ken Moelis, we’re confident Archer will transform consumer travel and everyday life.” Following the business combination agreement, Archer plans to come on the heels of several leading strategic partnerships. In January 2021, Archer announced it had entered into a strategic collaboration agreement with Stellantis, with a focus on accessing its low-cost supply chain, advanced composite material capabilities, and engineering and design experience. “Archer will provide commuters and travelers the flexibility on a global basis to live farther, commute and adventure faster and transform urban mobility in a greener, zero-emissions world,” said Michael Spellacy, CEO of Atlas Crest.

Olokun Yacht

TANKOA YACHTS LAUNCHES THIRD IN THE 50M SERIES

| BY NIKITA VIVEK PAWAR

T

he Italian shipyard, Tankoa has had a great 2020, and its latest is even better. The third installment of the Tankoa 50-meter full-aluminum yacht series is Olokun after Bintador and Vertige. The company delivered this beauty to its owner in December last year. “For me, it was a great pleasure to participate in the completion and delivery of Olokun while respecting the established deadlines, despite the serious pandemic that has hit the whole world,” says Vincenzo Poerio, CEO of Tankoa Yachts. “Western Liguria is full of successful shipyards dedicated to refit, but Tankoa is the only yard in this economic sector that has new-build superyacht construction as its core business. I’m convinced that by working with local authorities we will be able to grow Tankoa more and more until it becomes a point of reference in the global superyacht market.”

The 164-footer superyacht began life as an on-spec project that was sold and managed by Camper & Nicholsons. Photographed on route to the Côte d’Azur where she will spend her first season, the images highlight the yacht’s dramatic black hull and metallic grey superstructure. The exteriors of the Olokun are designed by the acclaimed Francesco Paszkowski, that uses sleek lines and an impressive color scheme of jet black and grey. The best part? the exterior color uses a high-performance coating that reduces the temperature of the metal in sunlight by up to 10°C (50 degrees Fahrenheit) which prevent sunlight absorption and overheating.

“This was a very stimulating project as the experienced client signed the contract when the boat was already 50 per cent complete,” says Giuseppe Mazza, Tankoa Sales Manager. “By collaborating with both C&N and the owner's team, headed up by Casadio Miami, we were able to deliver a beautiful yacht that fully met the client's expectations. I'm sure that the sporty lines of the 50-meter Tankoa combined with this new and catchy hull color, will grab the attention of many enthusiasts in the most prestigious marinas in the world.” The interiors are designed by Francesco Paszkowski while the decors are by Casadio from Miami, the interior layout of Olokun mirrors her 50-meter predecessors, Bintador and Vertige. However, there are two differences, the first one being the main deck is exclusively dedicated to a sun lounge for relaxation, there is a dining room on the upper deck. The forward master cabin has a beautiful private lounge that could also be converted into an extra en-suite. Olokun features a gorgeous beach club in the transom and a side-loading tender garage in the stern. The Olokun superyacht is a semi-displacement hull with conventional diesel propulsion. The top speed is 18 knots while the cruising speed is 14 knots. Two more 50-meter projects are currently in build at the Tankoa facility in Genoa and the company is continuing with due diligence procedures with a view to acquiring the Cantieri di Pisa brand and shipyard.

CRAVEIRAL FARMHOUSE ALENTEJO COAST, LISBON

Once upon a time, there was a solitary field of carnations along the Alentejo coast and a lawyer from Lisbon who dreamt of one day becoming a farmer. They met one spring day and it was love at first sight: one, an unloved plot of land with a natural potential that few could immediately envision; the other, ensconced in an office, who knew he had the ability to roll up his sleeves, get his hands dirty and give life to a different tourism project that mixed the land with the sea. From this happy encounter sprouted Craveiral Farmhouse, a place of nature tourism that is far more than merely a hotel on the Alentejo coast. It is a story of dreams and resilience – a lifelong and life-defining project, not just for those who make it happen every day, but also for those who come to stay. Founder Pedro Franca bought the land over 10 years ago,

which has been developed into Craveiral Farmhouse. A life defining project, it is more than a luxury hotel, it provides unique experiences for guests looking to learn about the land and understand rural life. A sustainable quinta in the hills of Odemira in the Alentejo. The region is known for its beautiful, rugged landscape, unspoiled beaches, charming fishing towns and natural parks. Craveiral Farmhouse is located on nine acres of land, a collection of 38 whitewashed cottages each with a wooden stove and simple wooden terraces which are surrounded by pine forest and fruit trees. There are four swimming pools, a well-being area, an education farm with animals (donkeys, horses, pigs, goats etc), an orchard of indigenous trees, a permaculture garden and nature center. With a concept of luxury through simplicity, there

is emphasis on connection with nature and serenity. Respecting the environmental has been a priority since Craveiral Farmhouse’s conception, sustainability plays an integral part of the DNA. There are a wide host of eco initiatives including the collection of filtered rainwater, reuse of the restaurant’s organic waste, burning of old trees as fuel for wood burning stove. Guests are offered the chance to help at the educational eco farm, caring for the animals and assisting at the vegetable garden and orchards. Another highlight is the Craveiral Farm to Table by Alexandre Silva, with an emphasis on locally produced ingredients in addition to sourcing from local producers. https://www.craveiral.pt/en/

The beautiful 2-bedroomed family Tembo Suite consists of two tents with shared lounge, dining area and pool, fantastic for families, two couples or a couple looking to experience the ultimate private safari!

60 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | SPRING 2021

Stunning, handmade bathtubs and indoor and outside showers give the tent a sense of ‘home’ where guests can move in and live. The Wi-Fi and working areas also provide space for you to catch up on business or just manage the images from the day. Each tent comes complete with a Canon professional camera and lenses, plus Leica binoculars for guests to use whilst they are staying in camp. With an innate knowledge of the area where Tembo Plains will be situated as well as an inherent understanding of what it takes to construct a safari lodge in a far-flung destination, Beverly and Dereck are currently designing the camp themselves, paying homage to the very ancient cultures in Zimbabwian culture and artifacts. Painted wild dogs, lions, leopards, buffalo and elephants are all common wildlife sightings in the Sapi Private Reserve.

Activities include day and night wildlife-viewing drives, walking safaris, canoeing and boating. “Tembo” means elephant and reflects more than just a place and a name honoring the animals on these plains. It speaks to long and unique relationships man has with elephants, with their pace and essence being drawn on for the atmosphere in camp. Tembo Plains fits into the highest-level Great Plains brand, the Réserve Collection of camps alongside other Great Plains camps like Zarafa Camp, Selinda Camp, Duba Plains in Botswana; Mara Nyika, Mara Plains and ol Donyo Lodge in Kenya. f you wish to gift something exquisite, rare, and unique, the Craft Irish Whiskey Company’s Limited Edition ‘Emerald Isle’ Collectible Whiskey Set is for you. The $2 million whiskey set is a seven-piece custom-made whiskey set that celebrates the ‘Seven Wonders of Ireland’ and lucky number seven. The Emerald Isle Collection is the second edition of a gift set from the brand. Presented in a stunning dark walnut experience box, each set features two bottles of ultra-rare, 30-year-old, triple distilled Irish whiskey, accompanied by two unique and exclusive creations from Fabergé – the first-of-its-kind Celtic Egg and bespoke Altruist timepiece. The triple distilled whiskey is the rarest single malt Irish whiskey in existence that has been aged in 200-liter ‘first fill’ American oak casks, which previously stored bourbon, and then finished in a rare single 40-liter Pedro Ximénez sherry barrel. This maturation process has imparted profiles that range from chocolate fudge and maple syrup on the nose to sweet leather and silky-smooth, ripe banana on the palate which flows into a long finish with hints of creamy meringue and rich vanilla cigar smoke. Crafted in 18k yellow gold, every egg features Fabergé’s legendary guilloché enamel in pastel green, together forming the colors of the Irish flag. Each of the seven Fabergé eggs features a different gemstone on its exterior: Gemfields Zambian emerald, Gemfields Mozambican ruby, blue sapphire, amethyst, rhodolite, spessartite or tourmaline, representing each of the seven locations, from The Blarney Stone to the Giant’s Causeway of Ireland. Jay Bradley, Founder of The Craft Irish Whiskey Co. commented on the collaboration: “We are more than delighted to be partnering with prestigious atelier Fabergé to launch ‘The Emerald Isle Collection,’ which is an extraordinary bespoke set, and will truly put ultra-rare luxury Irish whiskies on the map. WINES + VINEYARDS

Virginie Saverys & Avignonesi Lead Italy‘s Organic Wine Movement

| BY FRAN ENDICOTT MILLER

A

s the largest regenerative vineyard in Italy, Avignonesi serves as a role model. A prominent leader in biodynamic viticulture, the Tuscan winery, located within the rolling hills of Montepulciano, provides inspiration and insight for vintners the world over seeking to replicate the success of Avignonesi proprietor Virginie Saverys. Saverys took the winery reigns in 2009, transforming Avignonesi’s 218 hectares into a vibrant ecosystem and breathing new life into what is now a thriving vineyard and state-ofthe-art winery facility where sustainability is the core value. Saverys’ perseverance and dedication to her land and her employees results in clean, vegan, and organic wines that are delicious and compelling. Following a transparent and ethical process, she and her winemakers avoid harmful chemicals in producing wines that are authentic to their origins, yet singular and unique. Avignonesi wines enhance the richness and elegance of the Montepulciano region where Sangiovese wines have been produced for centuries. Saverys was born in Ghent, Belgium where she enjoyed a highly successful legal career before moving to Tuscany in 2007 and purchasing Avignonesi in 2009 with the intention of taking the winery to new levels of excellence. Here, the viticultural visionary shares further thoughts on her winery and her wines: Was this property biodynamically farmed prior to your purchase? VS: The only thing I kept from the winery’s previous owner (a chemical engineer) is the name. The property wasn’t organically or biodynamically farmed before I purchased it. I completely rehabilitated the vineyard, which has doubled in size. Toxic products are banned, the plants are strong, and the soils are teeming with life.

Why invest in organic and biodynamic farming? VS: While organic farming and biodynamics, including certification, is crucial, that wasn’t my end goal. While the certification validates what we’ve been doing for more than a decade, organic, biodynamic, and regenerative agriculture is a means to an end – the end being greater education and awareness about eco-friendly wine production as well as the introduction of wines produced with innate care for consumers, producers, and the soil and land. Our goal is to hand a better world to future generations, while treating everyone involved in the process with the utmost respect. What does biodynamics mean for those of us enjoying the wines? Is there a discernible difference, other than the satisfaction of knowing that these wines are gentle on the planet? VS: The taste and quality of the wines is much better; as the environment gets healthier, the grapes get better, which means that the wines only continue to get better with time. This also means that the wines stay better for a longer time. The aging potential as well as the drinkability of well-made biodynamic wines is truly amazing. Biodynamic viticulture is not only healthier for the environment, but biodynamic wines are better for the consumer. While wine itself is not ‘healthy,’ biodynamic wines avoid using harmful chemicals that can be found in other wine bottles. What we’ve mastered at Avignonesi is wine production that preserves the practice of winemaking – with deep respect for the history and tradition of the Montepulciano region – with eco-friendly practices to enhance the environment and highlight the Sangiovese grape. This produces wines with much higher taste and quality.

WINE + VINEYARDS

67 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | SPRING 2021

WINES + VINEYARDS

Were you involved at all in wine prior to the 2009 purchase? What particular life events inspired this dramatic career change? VS: Wine was always a passion of mine, and prior to taking ownership of Avignonesi, I had a minority stake in the vineyard. My role was limited to a few board meetings per year as a relatively silent partner. Out of the blue, the majority owner and manager left the vineyard, leaving me as the head of Avignonesi. I fell into ownership without previous viticulture experience and, rather than listen to the critics that surrounded me, I went back to school to learn how to plan for Avignonesi’s future; it was there that I learned about biodynamic viticulture and its benefits. I was born into a family of entrepreneurs. For anybody else, rehabilitating a wine estate and restoring the badge of honor of a brand may have seemed an impossible mission. It was certainly the best motivation for me. Are you fulfilled? Are you living your dream? VS: Interestingly, I believe I may never be fulfilled because the work is never done. On the other hand, I am living my dream, which is to take up a new challenge every day. Avignonesi has proven that healthy viticulture works and that it’s possible to implement on a large scale. I take pride in improving the soil and the land, increasing biodiversity on the property, and enhancing the lives of our employees. Before we transformed the vineyard, I was shocked to see vineyard workers wearing 68 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | SPRING 2021

hazmat suits to do their jobs. I didn’t want to have to wear a hazmat suit. Since taking over Avignonesi and banning the use of harmful chemicals, the workers no longer smell of chemicals, their skin issues have dissipated, and their moods and livelihoods are generally happier and healthier. Where can American consumers find Avignonesi wines, and what is the price range? Are there different levels - every day to special occasion? VS: Americans can find Avignonesi on various wine websites, including Wine.com and Wine Searcher. Our wines are distributed in 37 states. The suggested retail price for our wines ranges from $10.99 for the Cantaloro Rosso ’17 to $139.99 for the 50&50 ’15. No matter the prices or type, all Avignonesi wines are crafted with the same attention to detail and will satisfy most palates and budgets, as well as food pairings. The Cantaloro Bianco and Rosato are perfect with the ‘aperitivo’; the Rosso di Montepulciano pairs very well with spicy Indian, Thai or Szechuan food; the Nobile is great with Mediterranean oven-broiled fish or a great veal piccata. At less than $30 for Avignonesi’s wines, there is no better choice for a pure organic and vegan Sangiovese from Tuscany. The Poggetto di Sopra goes to a higher level – its elegance will enhance fine dinners. Finally, the Occhio di Pernice reaches the undisputed nirvana of meditation wines. An exceptional dessert wine which will pair well with an incredible array of savory and sweet treats.

WHAT’S HOT!

AERIAL ART JAY & JAN ROODE Flying over the most spectacularly remote wilderness areas of southern Africa, husband and wife team Jay and Jan Roode have spent thousands of hours in their specially modified aircraft to take the most astonishing photographs. The product of this labor of love is Aerial Art, with 144 pages of their signature photographs shot from the sky. So, is that what it’s like to be a bird? Seeing things from above? “The moment we took off into that deep blue African sky for the first time,” Jay remembers, “our lives changed forever. “We felt like the contemporary Stanley and Livingstone, the original explorers; discovering new frontiers, photographing places that had never been seen before.

Seeing Africa from above would have been an incomprehensible concept to these two 19th century adventurers, but here we were – free, flying high above the small concerns of men – it seemed as though we had entered the realm of angels.” A unique aspect of the book is the Index at the back, with photograph captions and descriptions of what is printed on the pages of this keepsake publication. Published by HPH Publishing and available in two formats – Standard Edition and Limited Edition, Aerial Art’s marvelous photography will make you feel like you’re gliding above these wonderous sightings. Says Jay “An attempt to describe the emotion of taking off with the sunrise on

cool morning air and flying low over the dune fields, golden savannas or turquoise seas of this Africa of ours, is best left for our images to convey. Flying over some of the most beautiful wildernesses on Earth was the most liberating and romantic experiences of our lives. And it still is. Every time.” www.hphpublishing.co.za

ALL ABROAD - A MEMOIR OF TRAVEL AND OBSESSION GEOFFREY WEILL At the age of 71, British born NYC immigrant Geoffrey Weill knows all too well what he wants out of life. It all started when he was a bright-eyed youngster, and the allure of travel making its way into his existence.

the Caribbean or the world. The crossing took a week; the weather was foul. I occupied a woodpaneled cabin that sat far enough above the waterline to be luxurious and near enough to the waves to be exciting, and it was divine.”

“I had come to New York on a special visa for intercompany transfers, yet my mindset was one of immigration. I arrived with seventeen suitcases on a freezing January 30 aboard the SS Canberra, the only liner crossing the Atlantic in the dead of that winter. In that 1973 cusp that was distinguishing the travel styles of the fifties from that of the eighties, the Queen Elizabeth 2 and her colleagues were already spending their winters cruising

Working at Thomas Cook in NYC paved the way for Geoffrey to start his eponymous firm Geoffrey Weill Associates in 1995, where a team of two has grown to a staff compliment of 15, and from three clients to close to thirty. He summarizes it unabashedly “mostly, it was simply because since the age of six I had been strangely obsessed with the reading of timetables, hotel directories, travel guides, and atlases. I knew my stuff. The near divinity of the

symbol for a five-star hotel became imbedded in my psyche as I absorbed my father’s simple credo that however magnificent or tawdry a hotel was, he would not stay in it unless he were guaranteed a private bathroom—in itself a rich illustration of the times.” https://uwpress.wisc.edu/books/5781.htm

A LIFE ON OUR PLANET DAVID ATTENBOROUGH Looking back on his life’s work, Sir David Attenborough takes readers on a contemplative journey, reflecting on the intense changes to the planet he has witnessed, and what the people can do to ensure a better future in A Life On Our Planet – My Witness Statement and a Vision for the Future. Short on the heels of his Netflix documentary of the same name, he speaks with passion of what lasting legacy we can leave to those who occupy the planet once we have left. Sir David reiterates: “I am 94. I’ve had an extraordinary life. It’s only now that I appreciate how extraordinary. As a young man, I felt I was out there in the wild, experiencing the untouched natural world - but it was an

illusion. The tragedy of our time has been happening all around us, barely noticeable from day to day - the loss of our planet’s wild places, its biodiversity. I have been witness to this decline.” “A Life on Our Planet is my witness statement, and my vision for the future. It is the story of how we came to make this, our greatest mistake - and how, if we act now, we can yet put it right. We have one final chance to create the perfect home for ourselves and restore the wonderful world we inherited. All we need is the will to do so.” This book and documentary are vastly different to what Sir David has done before. Filled

with passion and emotion, he speaks of the impact humanity has had on nature, which is not necessarily a good thing. A poignant moment is when he talks through the desecration of the planet, with the world population growing annually while the remaining wilderness diminishes at an alarming rate. https://www.penguinrandomhouse.co.za/ book/life-our-planet-my-witness-statementand-vision-future/9781529108286

VANISHING KINGS, LIONS OF THE NAMIB DESERT PHILIP STANDER, WITH WILL AND LIANNE STEENKAMP The most astonishing book entitled Vanishing Kings, Lions Of The Namib Desert, showcasing these beautiful animals, is sure to take pride of place on your coffee table and will be a conversation point for many years to come. The Namib Desert, known for its rugged beauty and unforgiving temperatures is home to a special species of lion population. To survive in these harsh conditions, they are forced to adapt or die, thus they are known as desert-adapted lions. For over 20 years, scientist Dr Philip Stander studied a small pride of lions in the heart of the desert, discovering what enables them to prosper in this extreme environment. With a PhD from Cambridge University achieved in 1995 for which he re-

ceived the Thomas Henry Huxley Award from the Zoological Society of London, Dr Stander is the ideal person to analyze the behavior of these big cats. “There is nothing more powerful and admirable than the sight of an adult male,” photographers and contributors Will and Leanne Steenkamp recount. “The epitome of power and pride, resilience and charisma, he is an awe-inspiring creature that strides through the world with unmatched confidence and stature, whilst carrying his significance on this planet with dignity and grace.” Vanishing Kings, Lions Of The Namib Desert is published by HPH Publishing, and this
