My Trip to Bathurst

I really like watching the Bathurst 1000 every year and also the Bathurst 12 Hour too. So the week before Christmas

Dad and me went on a trip to Bathurst so I could see the track and go to the Australian Motorsport Museum. We went down in Dad’s little blue ute which was pretty bumpy but it got us there okay. On the way and also on the way back we stayed at Narrabri.

When we got to Bathurst the track was huge but the thing I noticed was how it was really narrow and very, very steep. I didn’t realise how steep it is from watching it on TV. And the track is actually a normal road when the races aren’t on so we went around the track and got to have a really good look at it. I even got this photo of me at The Dipper which is a really steep corner that’s famous. We also went to the Australian Motorsport Museum which was great because it had so many of the cars which had been famous at Bathurst.

Our Bathurst trip was really good and I had a great time with my dad. And this weekend I’m going to watch the Bathurst 12 Hour race. Dad said that he’s going to take Sunday off at home so we get to watch it together.

Final Report Due Soon On Repairs To Our Hall

Southern Downs Regional Council has been approached by The Allora Advertiser about two issues that are of concern to Allora residents.

First issue - what progress has been made for repairs to our Community Hall and when will it be available for use?

A Council spokesperson supplied this information about the Hall (which is almost word for word received by The Allora Advertiser in July 2022)

Allora Community Hall

“Unfortunately there is significant damage to the roof structure of the Allora Community Hall, which further extends to the flooring system and load bearing walls. Council is waiting for the final report from the consulting engineers which is expected in the coming weeks. The true cost of repairs will only be known once the remedial design is complete. Once advised of the recommended works, Council will seek quotes on remediation repairs and investigate possible sources of grants and funding. Council has a duty of care to the Allora community and will only reopen the hall once

it is safe to do.” a Council Spokesperson said.

The second issue put to the Southern Downs Regional Council is the future of the Senior Citizens Hall in Allora.

Allora Sports Museum/ Library Services

Our News Online

“Currently there are no plans to relocate the Allora Sports Museum to the Senior Citizens Hall. Officers recently presented a number of options for the Senior Citizens Hall at a Councillor Information Session, however no reports have been presented to Council for a decision. At the information session, it was noted to Councillors that it would be a lengthy and costly process to change the trust conditions for the Senior Citizens Hall.

Our community papers

Council officers recently briefed Councillors on the delivery of library services for all towns and villages across the Southern Downs at an information session. The recommendation will now be tabled to Council, with a view to providing “a library service for all seasons: Creating an agile future for the Southern Downs” a Council Spokesperson said.

How To Plan And Communicate An Impactful Community Project

After a successful workshop held at Clifton last year, another one has been planned for Pittsworth later this month.

It doesn’t matter if you’re a grassroots community group or a land manager wanting to roll out a project how you put that project together is essential if you want to get funding, engage other people and ensure outcomes on the ground.

A four-hour workshop, coordinated by Condamine Catchment Management Association and funded by Australian Government will help grassroots groups and land managers understand project planning. The workshop will look at how to turn a great idea into a solid project plan including budgeting, monitoring and reporting, and

engaging volunteers. There will also be a session dedicated to communication: who your audiences are, how to reach them, and what to say.

“Project planning and management can be daunting to people, especially when they’re busy community volunteers,” presenter Samantha Morris from Wombat Creative said.

“So, I’m going to break down the jargon and simplify the process. This workshop will be interactive and hands-on, and people are absolutely encouraged to bring their real-life project ideas with them,” she said.

While one part of the workshop will see participants focus on what makes a great project plan, another will specifically focus on

how to communicate and look after volunteers the life blood of community groups.

“Project planning is one thing,” Samantha said, “but it’s entirely another to be able to communicate effectively about that project.”

“You need to be conscious of exactly who you want to communicate with, how to reach those people and the messages they need to hear.”

“And none of that can happen if you’re not clear about why you need to reach those people in the first place.”

Mary-Lou-Gittins is the secretary of Condamine Catchment Association, and she said the workshop was taking place as a result of community need.

“We know from more

than 3 decades of work in the catchment, that our grassroots groups sometimes struggle with the intricacies of project planning. They’ll have awesome ideas that they can’t quite articulate for funding bodies and strategic partners,” she said.

“Not only will this workshop offer practical strategies for taking those ideas and turning them into solid plans, but it’ll also help people better understand the ins and outs of strategic communication –especially when budgets are tight or non-existent.”

The workshop takes place on Tuesday 21st February in Pittsworth and attendance is free – Morning tea and Lunch will be provided.

Allora’s pride and joy is the huge undercover arena, built at the Showgrounds during 2021.

Principal Contractor Barry Glass of Allora Engineering and Welding was responsible for the construction of the building.

Moving onto 2023 Barry Glass and his team are now building a very similar arena at East Greenmount. The impressive construction can be seen from the New England Highway at Lauralla Lodge.

This

will serve a different purpose to Allora’s Undercover Arena.

Owners of Lauralla Lodge, Joe and Miranda Hughes recently purchased the property with the aim to transform wild brumbies into a life working with people. He has found that horses have the ability to heal people suffering the effects of trauma. Saving Brumbies is only part of the Joe Hughes story as he works with those who suffer from PTSD and other forms of trauma

such as schizophrenia and sexual and childhood abuse. Joe has developed a non-aggressive method of training horses and incorporates his clients into

this training program with great success.

The facility, which is nearing completion, will also be available for use by the local horse community.

Looking for a ‘PROPERTY GENIE’?

It seems I have spent a lifetime of mouthing mechanically, “Say thank you. Sit up straight. Use your napkin. Close your mouth when you chew. Don’t lean back in your chair.” Just when I finally got my husband squared away, the kids came along.

Allora Golf Notes

Winner of Friday’s Allora Hardware Duck Run with a great score of 22 points was Rob Hoey from Tommy Morris on 20 points. Pin shot was a clean skin, Timmy X won the approach and Errol the long putt. Thanks Allora Hardware.

On Sunday we played the very popular Allora Butchery Two

Person Ambrose with a field of 26 players enjoying almost perfect conditions for golf. Great to see Nat, Martin, Peter, Will, Rueben, Jamie and Orry playing on the day. Winners were Shannon and Jamie with a net 59.25, from Rob and Jamie on 60.5 and Kev and Tommy B in third place on 63.75.

Thanks to all the hard working Committee and Volunteers who made the Allora Heritage Weekend such a great success.

The weekend brings many visitors to our town, meaning a real boost to local businesses.

Visitors to the Showgrounds were kept busy checking out the

vintage and veteran cars and trucks, historical machinery, grand parades, stationary engines, retro caravans and the popular Swap Meet.

Graeme McMillan, President of the Allora & District Heritage Weekend was happy with the huge crowd and the large number of exhibitors who

From This… To This

turned up for the two day festival. Not bad for a something that started in 1996 when Graeme and a few blokes put their tractors at the Showground as there was nowhere else to park them. The tractors drew a crowd and 27 years on it’s grown into a popular Festival that’s become known Australia wide.
