Longest running Heavy Horse Field Day returns to Gatton Showgrounds
The 44th Gatton Heavy Horse Field Day will be held at the Gatton Showgrounds this weekend 29th & 30th April.
The Gatton Heavy Horse Field Day is the longest running heavy horse event in Australia having begun in 1978 on a property in Coolana, before moving to Marburg then Laidley, and then to Gatton in 1992 to its current home at the Showgrounds.
This year’s Gatton Heavy Horse Field Day has attracted record nominations from 144 horses and 80 competitors this year who will compete across a wide range of events including ridden classes, classes in the plough ring. Events which will see the heavy horses teamed with magnificently restored horse drawn vehicles and obstacle course events which showcase the strength and agility of the heavy horses.
Entries have been received from some of Australia’s most highly regarded owners and breeders of heavy horses.
Whilst the Field Days are mainly dedicated to the working of heavy horses, this in turn makes for the perfect show and spectacle for the general public to attend and to watch the skill of the heavy horses which played such an instrumental role in the making of Australia’s history.
The classes in the main ring will be complimented across the two days with an extensive programme of classes and demonstrations outside the main ring featuring the Blacksmith’s and Farrier’s World Cup 3-man draught horse shoeing competition.
Entertainment, food and drink vans and lots of stalls will be on site.
The price of tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for pensioners, seniors and students under 16, children under 5 are free and family tickets are available for $40.
For further information, email gattonheavyhorse@ gmail.com or visit www. GattonHeavyHorses.com. au or the Facebook page Gatton Heavy Horses.
Fall Armyworm Detected In Local Crops
“The current recommendations are to take action based on obvious damage from the caterpillars, which may not be the most economically efficient or ecologically friendly time to protect crops.”
The research project will establish the relationship between the timing of an infestation, its density and the crop’s response.
amental to the management of fall armyworm in broadacre crops.”
DAF’s Dr Melina Miles said field trials in maize and sorghum at UQ’s Gatton campus were providing important data.
“We haven’t had a severe defoliating pest before and most producers haven’t seen a shredded crop, so there’s a lot to learn,” Dr Miles said.
The highly invasive pest was discovered in Australia three years ago and poses a major threat to broadacre crops including maize and sorghum. Already this season the Fall Armyworm has been detected in crops on the Darling Downs.
Research is currently being undertaken by the University of Queensland (UQ) to tackle the Fall Armyworm.
Working with the Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF), UQ is developing guidelines to help Australian grain growers decide when and how to treat fall armyworm (FAW) to save their crops and finances.
Dr Joe Eyre from UQ is working with DAF on the project to determine economic thresholds for the pest to give farmers certainty.
“The overseas recommendations for treating fall armyworm are vague, and we don’t know how they relate to the Australian environment,” Dr Eyre said.
“Fall armyworm are easy to treat when small so we need to predict what the likely yield loss is going to be if the infestation is not treated, as opposed to spending money on treatments when it is too late or when FAW are unlikely to result in yield penalty,” Dr Eyre said.
“The development of these economic thresholds will be absolutely fund-
“Australia’s grains industry is used to having economic thresholds on which to base decisions about crop management and farmers are crying out for guidance because fall armyworm is so damaging and new.”
The guidelines will be finalised by June 2024, but Dr Eyre and Dr Miles are already presenting their work at industry conferences.
Allora Bowls Notes
Lucky raffle winners this week – Kris, Ryan x 2, Lynn P, Wendy, Kay. After the Fire Ants loss Lynn P was on fire with a raffle win and his number being drawn out for the Jackpot and winning the $60. Congratulations. Back to $20 next week.
Wattles Juniors Kick Off New Season
Under 6 – Wattles Clifton Upholstery Under 6’s were more than excited to be back on the field. Bailey Monckton scored a couple of tries, while Ollie Van Der Poel. Elsie MacPherson, Kaiden Williams and Oliver Dore also crossed for touchdowns.
As the competition draws to a close with only two weeks to go the competitiveness grows. Fire Ants are still on top of the ladder but with a loss this week it only puts them two points ahead of Gina’s Babies so anything can happen. A bit of brotherly love with the Fire Ants going down to Do It Again, a bit of rivalry between the Pattersen brothers.
Results: RINK 1: Beers, Bowls & Bitches 15 d. The Three Stooges 13; RINK 2: Gina’s Babies 21 d. What A Show 7; RINK 3: Railway Hotel 22 d. Phoenix Rising 13; RINK 4: Do It Again 19 d. Fire Ants 8; RINK 5: Doesn’t Matter 10 draw Stone Cutters 10; RINK 6: Peaky Blinders 14 d. The Gecko’s 11; RINK 7: Pig Lures 24 d. Generation Gap 5.
Touchers were Jackson, Katie, Glen, Trev, Roanne and Simmo with Simmo kindly donating his chocolate to Maddy our youngest player.
A cut of the cards to determine who would be winners in the drawn game between Stone Cutters and Doesn’t Matter with equal scores and equal ends saw Stone Cutters as winners and winners on the night with Fire Ants the losers. As I keep telling my team it really Doesn’t Matter as long as we have fun.
Thank you to our sponsors Allora Butchery, Railway Hotel, Right 1st Time Cleaning, Paul Parker Painting, Allora Sports Club and Tony Morris Tiling.
See you all back next week for another great game of social bowls.

Glyn ReesWattles Reggies Continue Winning Run
Try doubles by backline stars Brayden Wilson and Joe Willett were a driving force behind the ‘Tony Morris Tiling’ Wattles Warriors reserve grade side overwhelming the Warwick Cowboys 26 – 6 at Father Ranger Oval on Saturday.
Despite the absence of injured team skipper and inform frontrower Jordan Henry, coach Tony Morris felt the game was always well within his Warriors grasp.
Morris’ forward pack paved the way while his backs to lead the home side 16 – 0 at halftime.
The experience of Garth Lonergan is a more than supportive pillar while Jack Duggan, Tim Duggan, Ryan Lewis and Jessy Hammermeister were among the above average toilers in the pack.
Powerful centre Brayden Wilson crossed for two tries prior to the break.
Fullback Joe Willett was in superb touch as Wattles last line. He supported Wilson to claim Wattles second try after 13 minutes contributing to a 10 – 0 lead.
Willett put all his skills on the table and saw him among Wattles best.
Centre Tim Hentschel was another to shine and after a sterling start to the season the Warriors stalwart eased to TRL reserve grade premiership top try scorer honours with five touchdowns from three games.
On Saturday Hentschel’s try came nine minutes before full time and closed the game out despite a try to Warwick front-row captain coach Sam Williamson after half time.
The result in front of a packed crowd for the Basil Nolan Jnr Memorial Shield contested in A Grade, has Wattles clear leaders on the TRL Clive Berghofer Land Sales reserve grade premiership ladder after three outings.
Wattles 26 (Brayden Wilson 2, Joe Willett 2, Tim Hentschel tries; Joe Willett 3 goals) defeated Warwick 6
Suhan Guides Warriors to Under 19 Success - The Wattles ‘Black Toyota, Warwick’ big men along with a powerhouse display by giant centre Aiden Suhan ushered in a second new season victory for the Warriors.
The Warriors Under 19 finished on Saturday night as 22 –14 victors.
Coach Cameron Hamblin
was happy with the result, but is confident his team can lift to another level.
“We were short a few troops, and we need to focus on the simple aspects of the game, but our forwards are to be recognised for their consistency.”
Suhan, who has joined Wattles after relocating from Charleville, is a devastating addition to the Warriors backline at 102 kg and 190 cm.
Hooker Lachlan Hearn snared two valuable touchdowns, while Reuben Sullivan, Sam Gilmore, Lane Eastwell and Harry Schwenke were all among the workhorses in the pack.
The scoreboard read 10 all at half time with Wattles points coming from tries by Hearn and Schwenke, who ran off an Eastwell bust and off load.
Halfback Harry Fry touched down in the initial minute of the second half with Hearn crossing again three minutes from full time.
Wattles 22 (Lachlan Hearn 2, Harry Schwenke, Harry Fry tries; Aiden Suhan 2, Judd Rei goals) defeated Warwick 10
Warriors Denied Premiership Points & SilverwareCourageous fullback Matthew Christensen was a bright light in the ‘Stillwater Pastoral Company’ top grade Warriors’ disappointing 22 – 12 loss to the Warwick Cowboys.
The Cowboys success saw them regain the prestigious Basil Nolan Jnr Memorial Shield won last year by Wattles.
It only took until the sixth minute for Wattles to collect a classy try, it’s beginning from a kick by five-eight Tom Morris, chased down by half back Brayden Paix who offloaded to team skipper and back rower Ty Gardner at the try line to score.
The Warriors clung to their 6 – 0 lead until the 22-minute mark when Cowboys fullback sensation Nick Chapman scored.
Warwick hit back in force touching down on three occasions including the Chapman effort to lead 14 – 6 eight minutes prior to half time.
Hooker Zac Stevens crossed from dummy-half to have Wattles trailing 12 – 14, but Warwick responded to lead 18 – 12 at half time.
Despite some spirited advice at the break from coach Travis Burns,
his Warriors were unable to bother the scoreboard attendant in the second half.
Both sides gave no quarter in the final forty minutes, but a try midway through the half saw the Cowboys take their winning 22 –12 lead.
Warwick 22 defeated Wattles 12 (Ty Gardner, Zac Stevens tries; Brayden Paix 2 goals).
