Pastoral Letter If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord’, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. Romans 10:9 Dear Beetleblack, Further to my previous email number 13,666, I address your concerns about the forthcoming human spring holiday called ‘Easter’. It should in no way deflect you from your task of sowing confusion, doubt, and disbelief about the carpenter from Nazareth’s supposed resurrection. Our research and development department discovered a number of years ago that the use of a sentimentalised rabbit character called ‘The Easter Bunny’ has caused the majority of humans in your vicinity not to think of the other meaning as to why humans have Easter Eggs. The Christian Church has failed again, in getting across any meaningful response to this totally absurd abstract concept of a rabbit laying eggs! Therefore do not fret, for the majority of humans are easily distracted from ever thinking about what happens in life, let alone death. You can rest assured, that your mission here on earth is about getting humans not to dwell on issues that may make them think too deeply. So whenever you come across them looking at a sunset, or admiring a piece of artwork or even walking round a beautiful garden holding hands, before they can start questioning ‘why am I here?’ - distract them straight away. Twist their minds by whispering in their ears ‘luck’, ‘chance’, ‘fate’, or ‘it is just one of those coincidences?’. 5 If they start to even question what life is about and mention the word ‘God’, ’Jesus’ or ‘Christian love’ in any conversation, then take note and immediately call for backup. There are demons available at a moment’s notice who can assist you, many very experienced in preventing humans in heading in the direction of an active Christian faith, believing the lie that evil has been defeated. Remember, ‘Easter’ does not need to be a problem to us, treat it as an opportunity for humans to get more confused about God. Two of the master’s favourite sayings come to mind that may be useful in these circumstances, ‘all religions are the same’ and ‘you don’t need to go to church to be a Christian’, just whisper those into their ears and see that nothing happens! Prayer Prayer Group and Quiet Mornings If anyone would like to spend half an hour in fellowship and prayer then they are most welcome on a Tuesday at 4.30pm, when prayers are said for the life of the Parish. Contact Wendy Duff on 700295 for details of venue. On the third Friday of every month Quiet Mornings are held at the home of Wendy Duff at 10.30am. It is a peaceful time when you can relax, recharge your batteries and listen to music, poetry, readings and prayers. You will come away refreshed and ready to carry on! Chain of Prayer Worried about a loved one, a friend or yourself and would like prayers to be said by a chain of people? Contact Wendy 700295 or Gillian 700157 and they will start the chain by contacting the person next to them on the list and so it goes all the way round. A copy of the chain is on the notice board at the back of church. Prayer is a powerful and important part of life and one should never under estimate its effect. You don't need to give any details of the problem just ask for prayers to be said and it will happen. Please note that it will be treated with total confidentiality.
Prayers are offered for parishioners who are in special need, especially the sick and frail. Please advise either of the churchwardens of any persons or situations you would like remembered in this way. 7 All those living in particular roads are prayed for regularly, the whole parish being covered over a 12-week cycle: Week beginning:

John Farmer OBE 01/01/1940 – 08/02/2018 Pat, Kate, Jonathan, Sam and Tilly would like to thank everyone who sent so many cards and notes expressing shock, sorrow and sympathy at John’s death, and especially to those who left home-made soup and cakes, as well as flowers and pot plants in our front porch, many of which were anonymous. We truly appreciate your kindness during this time of our coming to terms with the tragic loss of such a wonderful man. We know how much he loved the community of Wisborough Green and that love has been returned to us by the bucket-load! How we will miss him … but we remember, when we are feeling bereft, to push the ‘JF button’ and try to stay cheerful as he, of course, would have wished us to.

Wisborough Green Primary School News It really has been an explosive term, with one of the highlights for me being the ‘Science Fair’. Not only did we see volcanic eruptions, wind powered jets and energy efficient powered gadgets, we saw a passion for science. The children worked collaboratively to set up a stall to demonstrate a scientific phenomenon. The younger children were amazed at the wonder of our world. We love to inspire young minds and think WGPS children will lead the way scientifically in the future. From the explosive to the beauty of our school grounds, we still get excited about the joy of nature. Our new pond has been dug out, with the support of Ryan and his team from the Sussex Wildlife Trust. They supported the children to build a ‘Toad Abode’, to encourage wildlife to set up home in our secret garden area. Whilst out at Forest School, some of the children were amazed to see a huge frog jump into the deep waters. We are now officially on pond watch, to observe the seasonal changes to this beautiful area. Our school gates will be opened on Sunday 27th May for the Wisborough Green Open Gardens, so please come along and enjoy our fantastic outdoor space. From the peace and tranquillity of the outside we took to The Hawth stage with lights, cameras and action. The children performed to the classic hit Thriller by Michael Jackson in an explosion of colour and creativity. Miss Snel and Miss Simmons worked incredibly hard to choreograph a fantastic dance with the children. Well done to everybody who took part - bringing the stage to life. The building project has finally been completed and we love our new spaces to learn. We are keen to share our building with the local community and would like to offer local residents the opportunity to hire some of our facilities. A leasing package is currently being produced, so if you would like to find out more information then please contact the school office. office@wisboroughgreenschool.org.uk We currently have a few spaces in our adult ‘Knitting Club’, if you would like to join us. This session runs on a Tuesday afternoon from 1.15pm to 3.15pm. Learn to knitbeginners, intermediate and advanced knitters welcome. Nature Notes So here we are in April! And it’s been an interesting winter hasn’t it!? We had daffodils out at Christmas, and the weather felt oddly warm. About four weeks ago we were up in Cambridgeshire and Jim noticed honey bees, at least a dozen feeding merrily inside some snowdrops. Only a couple of days later, they’d hopefully tucked themselves away in their nearby hive, as the Beast from the East hit us! (Why the media must think up all these silly names I don’t know, but I guess it keeps them happy!) Wasn’t it odd that we escaped the worst? Midhurst and other areas within a few miles had deep drifts and impassable roads. But despite bitter cold we had little snow or serious ice. I saw a rather disconsolate pair of youngsters going off down Champions bridleway with sledges, so I hope they found an obliging slope or two! One benefit of the cold weather - I’m delighted to report that the fieldfares and redwings, our usual winter visitors, were looking for food in the garden, so some lovely close up views of them. We’ve got wagtails too and glimpses of the goldcrest again, such tiny birds, how did they survive the Beast?? The pheasants have moved back in and my new chum is recovering from his trauma up the oak tree. So far, he’s coping well with his gammy leg, but he’s still a bit short on feathers. He now comes straight up to me and demands suet sprinkles by the handful, so I’m cautiously optimistic for his survival. The two other males have already started splaying up their feathers and vying with each other to be the tallest and flattest. They do look oddly daft, and the females just ignore them! Reports of a couple of treecreepers up at Ingrams Farm. They’re such attractive little birds. They only go upwards on tree trunks, then come down and start again, searching for tiny insects with their long slender beaks. Ingrams also has a new resident heron which hasn’t deterred a moorhen pair so far – but no sign of toads there yet. Newts are about in Bedham. Quite a lot of deer have been reported up in Bedham, so fingers crossed for them during the Treecreeper - photo by breeding season as several fawns have been Mark Howarth accidently killed recently. Much farm machinery is so huge nowadays, it’s hard to think people could see anything so small in front of them! Talking of that, sorry, but here comes a moan! So many of our verges are being decimated by larger vehicles, some almost halved in width! They are a precious area for wild plants and many invertebrates that are a vital source of food for bigger animals and birds. Please try to keep off them, and maybe pause for a moment, if you can, amongst oncoming traffic. Thanks! Sue J PS Brighton Pier – December 2017 – The starling Murmuration. At last we’ve seen it! We parked up about 3pm and walked over to the main pier. There was such a lot of noisy building and renovation work going on with the all the rides etc, we wondered if anything would come near. After a long chilly wait, a rather small flock of starlings appeared, dipping and diving above the waves. And our patience was rewarded an hour or so later with several hundred birds swirling in harmony as they settled on the girders below us. Fabulous!

Church Sponsored Activities Wizzy Tots Wizzy Tots, Wisborough Green’s baby and toddler group, meets at the Village Hall every Tuesday during term time from 9.30 to 11.00 am. Please join us for a coffee, catch up and a play in the Village Hall, all children and parents/carers welcome. It would be lovely to see you all. If you haven’t yet experienced the delights of Xpresso, come and enjoy freshly ground Fairtrade coffee or tea with a delectable homemade cake! Village Care Scheme 14
The St. Peter’s Village Care Team meets regularly and its aims are to give help and support to the residents of Wisborough Green in as many ways as possible. This includes visiting people who are housebound, in hospitals or in nursing homes, and comforting those who are suffering from illness, bereavement, loneliness etc. We also provide (through the West Sussex County Council) a free library service for those who are unable to leave their homes. Each team member is responsible for looking after an area of the village, for welcoming new arrivals, and for giving friendly advice. We produce “Welcome to Wisborough Green Cards” containing useful information which are always delivered personally. When appropriate, we send out cards on the first anniversaries of Baptism and Confirmation, and for bereavements. We are always open to suggestions and new ideas to help the community. Village Car Service The Village Car Service, a part of the St Peter’s Village Care Scheme (see above), has now been in operation for over fifteen years. It provides transport to Doctor’s and Dentist’s surgeries and local hospitals on request. There is no charge for this service but donations are invited from passengers as these are ploughed back into the Team’s budget to pay petrol expenses to the volunteer drivers. The service is co-ordinated by Jennie Burr (tel:01403 700607). We have a dedicated team of drivers and are extremely grateful to them all, but always need new recruits to cover busy periods. If anyone is interested in driving for the village please contact Angela Craddock on 01403 700336.
Church Sponsored Activities (Cont.) ST PETER’S LUNCHEON CLUB St Peter’s Luncheon Club meets six times a year, on a Thursday, in the Wisborough Green Village Hall and is open to anyone who lives in the village or who worships at St Peter's. A two-course lunch, accompanied by a glass of wine, costs £5.00, payable at the door. Members are reminded by telephone a week or so before the event. If you would like to become a member, please ring Hilary Edmonds on 01403 700623. The next lunch will be on: Thursday 17th May at 12.15 for 12.45 in the Village Hall.

Village Hall News The detailed changes agreed with Chichester DC have been incorporated into our plans and submitted for final approval. At time of writing, we are awaiting the planning decision. Our plans to make an early start on removing the stage have been delayed by a problem with the replacement flooring. Unfortunately, the manufacturers of the main hall floor no longer make flooring to the same specification - thickness and width. So we are unable to match and patch in the way we had planned. Wisborough Greening Group We are setting up a local group, the Wisborough Green Greening Group, to include Kirdford, to explore options for a community energy scheme, but we also welcome any ideas for “greening” our community - such as recycling, conservation, reducing our use of plastics etc. This is a non political group looking for ideas where we can work together to make our community self sufficient. The first action on the agenda is to establish what schemes already exist on a map, to include Wisborough Green and Kirdford, where existing alternative energy sources have been deployed. ‘Dos, Don’ts, Moans & Groans’ What a wonderful village we must live in not a single moan or groan from anybody this month. I do hope you are all complaining to West Sussex Highways about pot holes and granite sets that are loose or missing. Despite a return e-mail last month from the Highways department saying that the sets outside the shop were being repaired on the 2nd February, I see they are still not repaired. Not only is Sussex such a beautiful and varied county but it has many "Recorders" people who work in a voluntary capacity keeping an eye on and making a note of what is seen. Then, various of the groups put all their informatio together in a book. Following on from the Birds of Sussex published in 2014 edited by Adiran Thomas of the RSPB with others the Sussex Botanical Recording Society has published The Flora of Sussex in February this year. Packed to the brim with information, maps and excellent photographs and a profile of each of the plants found in the.county This was not a task to be undertaken lightly.....speaking of which this is not a field guide which you pop in your pocket, rather, it is a book to pick up with care and enjoy when you can't get out in the field. VILLAGE SPRING CLEAN There will be another community litter picking session on Saturday 7th April, meeting at the Sundial at 2.00 pm. Gloves, litter picking sticks, bags and bag holders will be provided. Please support this community event and help clear litter from the village verges. WISBOROUGH GREEN SCHOOL CELEBRATES 125 YEARS OF BRITISH CIRCUS AT THIS YEAR'S SUMMER FESTIVAL Wisborough Green Primary School PTA is delighted to share its exciting plans for their annual Summer Festival in June. This year we are excited to be partnering with Cirque Normandie, the UK’s premier French circus, who are actually based in Wisborough Green! The Festival itself will take place on Saturday 16th June and will feature two performances with the big top on the Green providing a unique focal point for this annual event. They will also be providing the children of our school and surrounding villages with free circus workshops, and creating a circus themed week of activity in conjunction with the school. We are extremely excited about this wonderful theme for this year’s event which celebrates 125 years of circus. We hope that the entire village and community will support and enjoy this vital fundraiser for the school which this year is seeking to improve its outside areas, including outside learning areas, all weather play areas, as well as other vital supplies to support the children’s studies. There will of course also be the traditional activities of the Maypole Procession, as well as performances and displays by the children on the Green, live music, craft stalls, food and drink, fun activities and lots of fun for all of the family. Tickets for the circus will be available for purchase and we will be sharing further information via local communication channels as more information becomes available.

Church Building Works a Progress Report Much progress is being made off site with the church building project and in church things are progressing well after the delay caused by the bad weather. The beautiful oak door to the lobby area and toilets and the panel above are now in place as well as the oak cornicing on the two new Vestries. New radiators are now in and functioning, which is a welcome advancement after a few weeks of sitting in a very cold church.

The old parquet flooring has been removed from the back of the nave ready for laying the new oak strip flooring and the fitting of the tracks for the moveable servery. The old cupboards have been removed from the south porch and a new sink and dishwasher have been installed. Helen V

Minibus Trip to Windsor Castle Wednesday 7 March 2018 With May’s royal wedding in mind the latest village minibus “special” outing was to Windsor Castle taking in St. George’s Chapel, where Prince Harry and Megan Markle will be married, as well as the castle’s state apartments. Kate Vernalls organised the visit and Sandra Matthews, one of the regular escorts on the mini-bus, supplied the pictures. Sandra is not the one wearing the Bearskin! The next visit will be on 2 May to the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Club and will include a fully guided “behind the scenes” tour as well as the club’s famous museum. The special trips are in addition to the twice weekly shopping “runs” for all villagers to the likes of Horsham, Guildford, Chichester, Cranleigh, Portsmouth, Worthing and Shoreham. Roger Moody 25
Annual Unlock Walk - Saturday 28th April 2018 The 'Unlock Walk' supporting churches in inner city London takes place this year on 28th April in Tottenham. I well remember visiting Tottenham on the Unlock walk 20 years ago – and have photos of St Peter's Milestone and Cornerstone children in Tottenham to prove it! Sadly we are older and wiser! (Some of us have become decrepid!) We walked then in a very different London and it was shortly after the Broadwater Estate riots and we were particularly worried to keep our charges safe. But we were met with joy and cake! Today the local churches are reaching out to their multicultural and vibrant communities through tough conditions. Wisborough Green Sports News Football Club The 2nd team has played 2 games in early March one on a half frozen pitch and the other more like water polo than football, They managed to win both which is a good sign for the 2 nd XI. Unfortunately the 1st XI have still not played since the start of December 2017, this is as predicted the softness of the pitch from the autumn spiking. This time last year we would have been rolling the pitch and playing most weekends. The West Sussex League have cancelled Cup competitions to reduce the amount of football that still needs to be played before the end of April. For Club fixtures please check the web site www.full-time.thefa.com. This is not always reliable but is the best place to look for fixtures. Cricket Club Winter nets have started for the Colts at Cranleigh School. Senior nets have also started and are on a Thursday evening at Cranleigh school. Please contact James Sadler if you would like to attend and he will give you details. Nets should start on the village green on 19 April from 6pm weather and ground permitting of course. The 2018 season starts the last weekend in April with Away games against Selsey on Saturday 28th and Alfold on Sunday 29th April. Please let James know if you are available. Time For God - March Our March Time For God (All Age Worship) fell on Mothering Sunday. It was a great celebration of us all being part of God’s Family. We were able to make posies for our mothers and the ladies in the Church, decorate gingerbread people, make cards and add our names to ’God’s Family Tree’.

Update Boxal Bridge Now that Boxal Bridge is listed, WSCC Highways is "considering their position". Clerk to WG Parish Council, Louise Davies, contacted the Highways Dept for setting up a new meeting with the Parishes.... and in their reply: Richard Hammond of WSCC Highways replied: I can confirm that West Sussex remain committed to developing the bridge scheme so that we will be ready when intervention becomes necessary, and to this end we are investigating what effect the new listing status will have. KKWG’s highways advisors have always recognised that the bridge does require work but NOT replacement. Current estimates for REPAIR costs are 1/10th of those required for REPLACEMENT. With the right kind of repair, as was undertaken at Ambersham Bridge, Boxal Bridge could last another 160 years. The next inspection is due in 2019.
RIGHT TO PEACEFUL PROTEST UNDER THREAT UK Oil and Gas (and its family of companies)* has applied to the High Court for an injunction which effectively stops any campaigning that affects its ECONOMIC interests. However the draft injunction goes on to aim to prevent lawful “combining together” “where the predominant intention is to injure the claimant’s economic interests”. The draft injunction names only “persons unknown” and is not site specific in this clause so it is effectively designed to stifle any opposition. For example, briefing others to object to a planning application involving UKOG or hiring a minibus to attend a planning hearing. This is draconian in its effect and counter to the right to assembly and the right to freedom of expression. It would have a chilling effect on lawful protest including many of the action groups across the South East have taken to fight oil and gas drilling on their doorsteps (organising events, film nights, picnics, cake at the gate, lobbying contractors etc). UKOG is seeking further sites across the Weald while the need to address climate change and to keep fossil fuels in the ground is becoming ever more urgent. *UKOG has sites in Surrey (Horse Hill) and Sussex (Broadford Bridge and Markwells Wood) which are mentioned in the injunction; plus a 40% interest in the Leith Hill (Surrey) Europa site and on the Isle of Wight. Part of the draft injunction deals with trespass on the sites or rights of way on them (a similar ban is in place at Leith Hill already). Recipe of the Month PAN-FRIED MASCARPONE GNOCCHI WITH DREAMY BASIL PESTO As we settle into spring, I thought I’d suggest a flavoursome, fresh, vegetarian dish, great for lunch or a light supper, which are great for making in bulk and freezing uncooked.
Ingredients PESTO:
GNOCCHI:
100g Parmesan cheese Small handful of fresh thyme sprigs (or 1 tbsp dried oregano) 350g mascarpone 300g plain flour, plus extra for dusting 2 medium eggs Olive oil 50g butter
25g Parmesan cheese 1 garlic clove (preferably roasted) About 60g fresh basil 50ml olive oil 50g toasted pine nuts
TO SERVE:
1 bag of wild rocket 25g toasted pine nuts 1 lemon Salt & freshly ground black pepper

Method 1. First, prepare the pesto. Finely grate the Parmesan and tip it into a blender or food processor. Peel the garlic, tear the leaves from the basil and add both with the oil and pine nuts. Blitz to a paste, season and set aside. 2. Now, for the gnocchi. Finely grate the Parmesan and tip it into a medium bowl. Pick the thyme leaves and add them (or the dried oregano) with the mascarpone, flour, eggs and salt and pepper. Mix to give a soft dough. Tip it onto a lightly floured surface and knead to form a smooth ball. 3. Divide the mixture into three and roll each out into a sausage about 60cm long. Cut each into 2cm pieces to give about 30 (90 in total). Halfway through, put two large frying pans each on a medium to high heat with a drizzle of oil and knob of the butter. Divide the gnocchi between the two pans and turn the heat down low. Leave the gnocchi to cook on one side for a minute, then carefully turn them over with a fish slice. Cook for 4 minutes more, continuing to turn them every so often until they are crisp and golden all over and warmed through. If all the gnocchi didn’t fit in your pans then tip the cooked ones in a bowl, cover with foil to keep warm and cook the remainder adding more oil and butter as necessary. 4. Once all the gnocchi are cooked, toss the pesto and rocket through until evenly coated. Then, divide them among four plates. Scatter the pine nuts over. Wisborough Green History - JAMES Last month described the start of the process of renovation, meeting new customers and discussing the scope of the work. This was followed by detailed discussions with the coachtrim and engineering managers and then the vehicle booked into the workshops. Sometimes, the customer only needs components for his car . . . . In the company’s early days, Jim started out providing body components such as the windscreen, brackets, locks, hinges and everything else including the hood frame for cars that were being renovated by others. Later on, he extended his skills to trimming where he renovated and recovered seats and recarpeted the whole car. Finally, he undertook the renovation and restoration of the whole car as the company does these days. Nevertheless, the company still continues to provide parts for vintage Bentleys and other similar cars. Windscreens are one of the main items supplied and are made so that they fold up and down with one or two opening screens with screens being made for the rear. The company supplied (and continues to do so) a large amount of components, viz. locks, hinges, bits and pieces and materials of all sorts. The company has also supplied various handles and a speciality is their engine-turned dashboards in aluminium or wood, usually mahogany. As Jim’s business grew and he was able to restore complete cars, it became necessary to divide the restoration process into two distinct parts within the workshops, viz. the trimming department that does the seating, carpeting, hoods, etc and the engineering department that does the physical rebuilding and construction of bodywork, wiring,

etc. though this doesn’t include heavy mechanical work such as engine overhauls. Many skills are involved in the restoration process and a considerable amount of time and effort is required to preserve and restore each car received. Many details must be considered at the outset of each restoration project. Any information or historic photographs available are obtained for reference and collated for use as the project is planned. It is important to retain the overall feel of the car and to balance the extent of the restoration work with the need for repairs. This is achieved by continual thought to the final finish required and attention to detail in all aspects of the Engineering and Coachwork.
S E PEARCE (SUSSEX) LTD (Cont) 9 One of the most difficult tasks that the company undertakes is the preservation of fine historic vehicles that present themselves in poor order but highly original condition. These cars require an especially delicate and considered approach, as every aspect of the restoration work must be completed without affecting the authenticity of the vehicle or compromising its original presentation. The trimming department has a comprehensive knowledge of the techniques and materials involved so that they can undertake almost any kind of work using all sorts of animal skins, finishes and colours. The seating uses the correct materials and springing with cane piping and anything else that was used in the days when these cars were being made and which is available now. 37 However, new materials now exist that weren't in the 1920s and 30s and if Jim or David think that they're better, they advise the customer that the new materials will be more comfortable and longer lasting. The carpets come from Brussels in a lot of cases which is where much of the original carpeting came from. It's very closely woven and not so thick so that it can be bent around sharp corners easily. It doesn't hold much dirt and it wears very well. There can always be a problem with carpet colour. They spend a lot of time trying to get this right but unfortunately new colours are nothing like the old ones. Some of the early carpets were blue-grey or various tones whereas most modern carpets can be quite bright and are of a single colour. Of course, they spend a lot of time trying to get the colours correct for no matter what is spent on the car and how well it is designed, if the colour scheme isn’t acceptable, most of the restoration processes will have been in vain. A few photographs have been included to illustrate the type of work being done; regrettably these are current as no older photos have come to light. They show: Gary Woolgar selecting and treating animal skins for the seating, Barry Harvey upholstering one of the front seats, templates for seats with covering material and a car under reconstruction showing the newly installed seats. Come in fancy dress and enjoy some good swashbuckling fun with ‘sea’ battles to try and defeat the pirates, rescue the princess and take possession of the treasure chest! Plant summer-flowering bulbs such as Lilies and Gladiolus into beds, borders and containers. Divide Hostas before they come into leaf. Pot them up and bring them along to the May plant sale. Divide primroses after they have flowered. Deadhead daffodils and tulips as the flowers finish but leave the foliage intact allowing it to die back naturally. Plant your chitted potatoes outside in the ground or in potato grow bags, but remember to keep well covered if there is a chance of frost. Protect your fruit blossom from late frosts by covering them with fleece on cold nights. Plant out strawberry beds, making sure you enrich the soil first with plenty of well-rotted manure. Keep an eye on your seedlings - as soon as they have their first true leaves, prick them out into pots or modules for growing on. Local Club and Society News Wisborough Green Short Mat Bowls Club There is just the one match to report since last month. We entertained Fittleworth in the annual ‘Derby match’ on Wednesday 28th February, with Fittleworth coming out on top by 9 shots. We disappointingly lost on both mats with Mat 1 (Gavin, Marilyn, David and Monica) losing 17-18 and Mat 2 (Evelyn, Lorraine, George and Pauline) losing 13-21, giving a Match Result of 30-39. Wisborough Green Spitfire Simulator Club Why not join the Spitfire Simulator Club? The prime purpose of our simulator project is to raise money for the RAF Benevolent Fund and to that end, simulator flights are normally charged for. However, with the Simulator Club, members make a small donation to the RAFBF (£5 per year) and their name goes into a hat every month and the winner gets a flight for free. Wisborough Green Horticultural Society Next Meeting - Monday 9th April 8pm In the Village Hall Talk on “Alstroemeria” by Ben Cross Do come if you can as Ben’s nursery is in West Sussex and he will be bringing flowers for us to buy. Alstroemeria are excellent cut flowers as they keep very well in our centrally-heated homes. The AGM has been and gone and passed off smoothly! Kate Vernalls is a new addition to the committee so a very warm welcome to her. “The Quiz” that followed the AGM had heads scratching and caused the inevitable disagreements with an answer or two! However it was an enjoyable evening. Now spring is upon us the Plant Sale is fast approaching so have an eye for raising/ 45 dividing plants as well as purchasing! Please note the date – Saturday 5th May. The coach trip this year is to Wakehurst Place (unfortunately cancelled last year) on Wednesday June 13th. Spring lecture Friday 13th April 7.30pm at St Mary’s with SAT-7 – SAT-7 is a Christian television service broadcasting to 500 million people in the Middle East and North Africa. Free entry. Refreshments and wine afterwards. Toilets at church. They care about and address what’s going on in the world right now around Iranian women, tackling violence in schools and bring into the subjects God’s transforming love for the world through Jesus Christ. There is a youth channel as well as a whole variety of programmes from children’s game shows to deep theological studies; lifestyle magazines to sports programmes. Most importantly, SAT-7 strives to make the Good News as easily understood and culturally relevant as possible so it’s produced by and for people of the Middle East and North Africa. It’s going to be a fascinating talk from Karin Needham learning about the work they do and how they provide inspirational, informative and educational television in a very different environment to ours. The March Market Another excellent month for boosting Macmillan funds by sales from their cake stall and teas, coffee and cake from the servery. Sue Turley, Cottage Garden Produce, returned selling her seasonal cakes and goodies. This month we said farewell to Nigel Rainer (Startup Computing), who has been not only a market stalwart for many years, but has also helped very many Wisborough Green residents with their laptop/computer problems on home visits. Nigel and wife Margaret are moving to the Isle of Wight for a well earned retirement. Thank you Nigel and Margaret, and best wishes from everyone. Our raffle for a 2 kilo Easter Bunny (made by stallholder PURE Chocolate Truffles), was won by Judith Dandy. Well done. That’s a lot of chocolate! WI Report Unfortunately the meeting on the 1st March had to be cancelled owing to freezing temperatures, an impending snow forecast (which didn’t happen) and the speaker’s reluctance to turn out on such a dodgy evening! Now the good news; the Speaker, Bob France, will come to give his talk ‘What the Butler Saw’ on the 4 th October instead, so all is not lost!! Our next meeting (weather must be better), is on Thursday 5 th April 2018 when we will don our dancing shoes again and Stacey will show us how to jive! Come prepared please. Weather Watch Wisborough Green rainfall for February was 34mm (last year 61mm – 10 yr average 72mm). Hello, It’s me again “ADA PRETTY” .THE OUT AND ABOUTER REPORTING GLAMOUR PUSS from The Cat and Rabbit Rescue. My Story today is about CAELLUM. The name is CELTIC for “BRAVE WARRIOR”. When you have read his story you will know why Claire gave him this name. Nine years ago a call came into Nigel from a worried man to say there was a cat in the road which had been run over in Sidlesham. Nigel rushed to help the cat that was very badly injured and took him to our vet Mark who sadly had to remove Caellum’s eye which was so very bad and because his leg was so badly damaged it was also removed. Poor Caellum’s jaw was also hanging off and had to be wired up and believe it or not the next day he was purring and enjoying the attention. He did go to a new home with a lovely lady, who unfortunately was unable to keep him, so he has been back living with us for the past few years. He is an inspiration to us all at CRRC. Very loved and likes to be the centre of attention. My staff think he does have a bit of dementia now, so he is watched very closely and likes to sleep in proper beds and come and go wherever he wants to go. His recovery was made possible because he received unbelievable care, which resulted in him having a lovely life here at the Centre. Caellum is one of the bravest cats that we have ever met and he is very happy that his story has been told and would like me to show you all a picture of the handsome boy. We rehome by appointment 7 days a week, following a pre home visit by one of our home visitors. If you feel you can give a home to one of our rescued cats rabbits or guinea pigs please call us on 01243 641409 between 9am and 4pm, MONDAY TO FRIDAY.
