Pastoral Letter “Greater love has no one than this; to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. John 15:13 Anniversaries are an important recognition of events in the past that have impacted the lives of those involved, that they wish to be recalled and recounted. As a family we have been celebrating wedding anniversaries and special birthdays with a number of couples and friends over the last few months. Years after an event it is quite fun to look back at photographs, to chuckle and reminisce at the fashions, the vehicles and the gatherings of family and friends to celebrate a wedding, birthday or baptism. However sometimes we look back to events that not only impacted families, but focused the attention of whole communities and even nations. This August we shall recall the events of seventy five years ago, when many Canadian soldiers based in and around Wisborough Green, supported by US and British troops, took part in the ‘Dieppe Raid’, which we shall commemorate on Sunday 6th August at our 10.30am service. This assault on the port of Dieppe in occupied France cost the lives of many allied troops with the Canadian Units suffering many fatalities. Others were wounded or captured. For those troops who returned, the events they had experienced toughened their resolve, to ensure that one day they would return and help liberate not just occupied France, but the rest of Nazi controlled Europe. Many of those young men who boarded those ships in the August of 1942, are now in their 90’s and as we give thanks for their dedication and sacrifice, this years service will probably 5 be the last in its present format. So I would like to encourage as many folk as possible from the village to join us at St. Peter’s to remember and give thanks for the commitment to an ‘Anniversary’ that is special in the life of this community seventy-five years on.

From the Editor A warm welcome to the August 2017 edition of Ad Vincula and another packed edition it is. Once again, you’ll find lots of ideas for keeping the kids occupied during the long Summer Holidays. With the 75th Anniversary of the Dieppe Raid occurring this month, it seems appropriate to include the following poem which was written by Peter Edmonds for the pageant "The Hill by the Water Meadow" performed in the church in 1990 and 2000. I hope you will find something of interest and do please keep all your articles, comments and photos coming to me at editor@stpeterswg.org.uk. A Dieppe Elegy O green and pleasant England! Mighty land of yore, Others came to save you from the scourge of war. Your own fought hard and bravely and gave their lives for you; But help was gravely needed; friends came, good and true. They heard you, Mother Country, calling in dismay, And travelled from their homelands to keep the foe at bay. Many of those soldiers from Canada had sailed To Sussex for their briefing. Their bravery was hailed By all. Those men were young and in the ripeness of their youth, But they gathered here for freedom, to fight the enemy of truth. They cherished not their future, for they knew that time was short, So they took up their equipment. There was a battle to be fought. Those who write the history of war for certain say That the task those men were given was doomed, before the day When sailed they bravely forward, six thousand strong to Dieppe. How right they are! But yet, who would condemn the step That took them to their fate? The battle was a disaster. The men recalled. Too late! More than half were slaughtered, Captured, hurt or maimed, yet they never faltered. There’s a more important lesson than the one the generals learned That day, when thousands died And sour defeat had turned the thoughtless minds of planners To battles new, and as they sought to raise the banners Of war again. To win! The lesson we should learn now, is not how best to win Again in battles small or great, but having won then, How best to use the victory so dearly bought. Have we Not wasted more than seventy years of peace? But seek Now: when chances rise to thank the men, who with their precious lives, Ensured we should survive. from “The Hill by the Water Meadow”, Peter Edmonds

Wisborough Green Primary School News The Wild Wisborough Summer Festival was a huge success and the weather was glorious. Our brilliant PTA excelled themselves again, raising £8000 towards an outdoor classroom. There was singing, dancing and a horse show with a difference! We were lucky to have our day caught on camera, courtesy of Claudia Holden Photography so please have a look on our website to see some of the stunning shots of the day. Thank you to everyone who helped to make everything run so smoothly - it really was a team effort. As part of our healthy living topic this term, all the children have had an opportunity to develop their cycling skills during ‘Bike Week’. It has been brilliant seeing everyone challenge themselves to improve their skills and the additional exercise is an added benefit. One of the highlights of the term has to be the Rocky Monster Show production. The 11 staff and children worked tirelessly to put on a high quality performance, full of fun and fear! Zombies, monsters, rockers and some unusual Wisborough villagers took to the stage to tell a tale of a masked Professor of Genetics. I am so proud of each and every one of our children - we really do know how to work in unity to achieve success. Well done! Our 1940s garden was in full bloom for the Billingshurst Rotary Club competition and it looked beautiful. The gardening club and the Eco- Warriors designed the garden with flower fairies, magnificent men in their flying machines and a vegetable patch that the Horticultural Society would be proud of. Well done team WGPS! It seems hard to believe another year has passed and that we have said goodbye to our hard working year 6. We would all like to wish them well in everything they do in the future. Every individual has the ability to change the world, so follow your hopes and dreams. Don’ t forget to come and visit us though, we love hearing about how you are getting on. Have a relaxing summer break. September. Happy Holidays!
We look forward to welcoming everyone back in

Nature Notes In the middle of June we had a week’s holiday on Paxos, a small Greek island with lovely people and delicious food, and no jobs that had to be done! A real ‘chillaxing’ treat! It was when we got back home and birdsong filled our ears again that I realised what had been missing. There’d been lots of swallows and seagulls, and loads of butterflies, but hardly anything else in the air, and virtually no songbirds. Too quiet! Mind you, we could be in danger of bankruptcy from hungry youngsters at the moment. They’re emptying the feeders at least twice a day - tits of all varieties, also sparrows, finches – green and gold – starlings, spotted woodpeckers, jackdaws, rooks and crows! Plus ground feeders, chaffinches, blackbirds, robins, dunnocks, and a thrush or two. A whole family of goldfinches were in the garden of the old Forrest Stores, I hear. I can’t remember when we last had so many late broods, and all so hungry. But I love them, every one. I mentioned the butterflies on Paxos, and this year they are thriving here too. Amongst many species we’ve had a marbled white in our field, a white admiral reported at Bedham, peacocks, tortoiseshells, gatekeepers and commas. As you see from these terrific pictures (not mine!) taken alongside the Wey and Arun Canal, dragonflies are doing well too.

Meanwhile, up at Newpound, some friends had great pleasure watching deer raising two fawns in their field, staying around until the hay was cut. But then a swallow’s nest fell down in their stable. Great anxiety all round, as the babies were still so small, and sadly one had died. Impossible to replace the nest, so they cut a plastic pot in half, filled it with hay, fixed it to a beam and put the four babies back in. They left them, fearing the worst, but in the morning the parents were there feeding them, and …… …..eleven days later they fledged! Talking of hay and fields, what a lot of white clover lately. It’s all over the village, the green has been carpeted with it and many gardens too. A feast for the bees. Why just the white variety I wonder? Does it cope better with dry weather? And yesterday, outside Sainsbury’s in Billingshurst a red kite was circling happily on thermals right above us. Further south there’s been a report of a nest with two youngsters. They definitely seem to like Sussex now. Athletic and dramatic in flight, they mostly scavenge for food and pose very little threat to anything larger than a rabbit. I hope we can make them welcome here. Nearer home, our buzzards are becoming more independent by the day, and my favourite kestrel is still around. So - lots of things to see and hear at the moment, and although it’s lovely to jet off occasionally, it’s awfully nice to come home to our green and pleasant wildlife-busy land. With these changing times, let’s hope that we can keep it so! Sue J
A GLORIOUS SUMMER FESTIVAL FOR ALL Never does Wisborough Green look more like the epitome of English village life, than on a summer’s day, and never more so than when the focus is some spectacular maypole dancing in front of the iconic cricket pavilion! The glorious weather provided the perfect backdrop to the school’s annual summer festival, and the crowds came and soaked up the sun and the hospitality both of which were on offer in abundance!
The Festival was officially opened by the May King & Queen, Daniel Grigg and Esme Moore, who spoke with fondness of the school they were about to leave. Maypole dancing with 14
a modern twist was next on the agenda, not to mention a technical hitch, as the pole had to be flipped having been erected upside down! It didn’t phase the dancers though, who swirled and twirled with tremendous energy given the searing heat. Performances from the school’s Rock Choir followed, as did a ‘boot camp’ from Up & Outdoor Fitness. Dance was then back on the agenda, with each year group providing a display,
before the grand finale in the arena, The Hobby Horse of the Year Show. Hosted with more aplomb than should even be possible by Mrs Scott Kerr, our stable of hobby horses were
put through their paces in various age groups, climaxing in the hilarious ‘Dad’s Race’, many looking very puzzled as their names were called to the starting gates! Our Wild Wisborough Photography Competition attracted a fantastic standard and quantity of entries, and was judged by local photographers Claudia Holden of Claudia Holden Photography, and John Nicholls of John Nicholls Photography, who did their best to impart their photographic wisdom to our budding young snappers. The winners were as follows: Years R, 1 and 2 – Winner : Tom Robinson, Runner Up : William Beresford, Years 3 and 4: Winner : Pippa Sheasby, Runner Up : Isabel Maggs, Years 5 and 6 : Winner: Liam Spackman, Runner Up : Jack Johnson. Of course the winner overall was the school, as we raised a colossal £8,000 which will all be spent on improving and enhancing the outdoor learning environment for the children in the coming year. We would like to say a very very big thank you to everyone who was involved, especially the villagers who came and supported, 15 the sports club who allowed us to use their facility, the Parish Council, and Brian Smith for providing parking. A very special thank you to all of our sponsors, advertisers and prize draw prize providers, to Claudia Holden Photography for providing photography, and to Jake and Ben Media who provided the sound system and technical support via The Weald School. Here’s hoping our weather luck continues for 2018!

Wisborough Green Sports News Football Club. Football training has commenced on the Green weekly from 6pm new players always welcome. For Club fixtures please check the web site www.fulltime.thefa.com this is not always reliable but is the best place to look for fixtures. Matches normally start early September. Cricket Club. The 1st XI are sitting mid table with the season having been split into 2 halves the first half being a win/ draw / lose and the second half being just win /lose on runs scored. It will be interesting to see which we do better in. The 2 nd XI only play win/lose cricket and are sitting 3rd in the league. Colts section are doing well this season but it is difficult to say where they are in the league as the number of games vary so much. Under 10s are topping their league. Under 9, 12, 14 & 16 are all doing very well in their leagues. New players are always welcome 1st XI captain James Sadler on 07973 414645 Ex Club Captain. It is with great sadness that I report the sudden death of one of the clubs previous captains during a match at West Chiltington on Saturday 10th July. Tim Monday who was playing for West Chiltington against Middleton had played for Wisborough Green from 2008 until 2014 will be sadly missed by all cricket followers in Wisborough Green and Sussex. Table Tennis News Congratulations to Rhela Ford for winning the summer “Round the Table” table tennis competition. Her magnificent prize was a small set of juggling balls and she has been set a target to demonstrate her “fleet of hand” at the annual Christmas Dinner in December! The club has just enjoyed a fish and chip supper at Fernlea. Do be tempted to come to the Village Hall on Wednesdays 4-6pm – we are of mixed ability and it is great fun. If you played years ago it’s a bit like riding a bike – you won't have forgotten! Philip M

Village Hall News Existing
Proposed
Our structural engineer has looked through our plans and has provided an updated report on the necessary works that will be needed to support the extension of the building as proposed. The Bat survey is due to be carried out on 26 th July. The Design & Access and Heritage Statements are being finalised. The project team plans to pull together all the relevant reports and statements in early August following which we shall submit a formal application for planning consent. I shall report further progress in due course. Keith Carter Chairman, Village Hall Management Committee
Village Hall Treasurer needed Our Treasurer, Ruth Andrews, has indicated that she intends to give up her role at the end of this year! The Hall Committee therefore needs to recruit someone who has a good knowledge of accounts and bookkeeping, preferably using Quickbooks software, plus use of email, WORD and Excel. The Hall accounting system is well established and straightforward to manage. This is a voluntary role but an important one for the community and the many users of the Hall which cannot operate without a Treasurer. The current Hall Committee runs with a minimum number of volunteers and has no capacity to absorb this role within its current composition. If you feel that you could carry out this role, then please call or email me for more information. Please don’t wait until the last minute as it will be important to ensure continuity of management of the accounts.

A Strawberry Tea Party On Thursday 29 June, a wonderful time was had by all who attended the Strawberry Tea Party in Doris’s garden and £1500 was raised for St Peter's triple projects - FSW, Syrian refugees in Greece, and Youth with a Mission in Uganda. A fantastic result - and thanks to all who supported it.

Link to Hope Shoebox Appeal Just a little reminder to start you thinking about gifts to fill your shoeboxes for the Link to Hope charity appeal for the underprivileged in eastern Europe. They send thousands of filled shoeboxes in December to these countries for families too poor to buy necessities , let alone gifts for their families. So it's a lovely treat for them to receive a shoebox, at, dare I say the word, Christmas. I know many of you buy things you see throughout the year in preparation so, thank you all in anticipation. Letter from Joel Gage of Aegean Solidarity Network Dear Doris, Judy and St Peters Mission Group, Thank you so very much for holding the amazing Strawberry Tea Party at Doris’ house at the end of June. It was a privilege to be a part of it, and thank you for choosing us as one of the charities you’re supporting. The kindness and generosity of your guests was overwhelming, and we are so grateful for the donation we received. We have been very busy over the last couple of weeks! We have just provided funding for The Unmentionables working in Chios, and purchased a bulk buy of underwear meaning that every resident of the Souda Camp in Chios will receive 1 if not 2 new pairs of underwear. Considering the amount of people in the camp - this is a fantastic achievement. We continue to sponsor the hygiene kit programme in Leros. The NGO Samaritans Purse was providing hygiene items for the 400 or so people in the islands hotspot. Samaritans Purse has now pulled out of the island, and we are talking with ECHO100Plus to see how we can fund hygiene items for the residents of the hotspot as well as those in Pikpa. We have just funded a months worth of food via the Oasis Solidarity Group in Rhodes and continue to pay for food needed for meals for the refugees they are hosting. We have also made a bulk purchase of nappies and ladies sanitary items for distribution from Hope Café for some of the refugees in Athens. 25 We are helping more and more people and your continued support means we can reach even more. WALKERS BRING IN £10,000 FOR CANAL RESTORATION PEOPLE strolling in the countryside and visiting historic locations have raised around £10,000 to help bring a 19th century waterway back to life. Their enjoyable expedition supported the Wey & Arun Canal Trust (WACT), which is carrying out a number of restoration projects. The money was amassed by 150 people who took part in the charity’s annual fundraising walk, the Poddle, at the beginning of June. “We are delighted with the money raised for the canal restoration fund,” said walk organiser Margaret Darvill. “With Gift Aid added, the final proceeds from the Poddle will be about £10,000. The trust is really grateful to the people who sponsored our walkers and our thanks go to all those who completed the Poddle and to those who helped with the organisation and on the day.” The Poddle supports the restoration of ‘London’s Lost Route to the Sea’, a 23-mile waterway which ran from the River Arun at Pallingham in West Sussex to the River Wey at Shalford in Surrey. This year’s walkers followed a 12-mile route around the Arun Valley, starting and finishing at Ingfield Manor School at Five Oaks, north of Billingshurst, with lunch at Wisborough Green Scout Hut. The route included the canal from Loves Bridge, past Rowner Lock – the site of the first volunteer working party on the canal – to Lordings, where walkers were able to see a unique waterwheel and a restored aqueduct. 30

Time for God Service Sunday 9 July 2017 This service incorporated the Family Support Work (FSW) invitation to bring your teddy bears to Church. Many teddies 31 came and there were activities such as accessorise your teddy or the teddy on the card we made. We heard that God loves us unconditionally and listens when we talk to Him. Children were treated to miniature horse rides after the service – Many thanks to Nina and Dan. Next Time For God Service is at 10.30am Sunday 13th August
Wisborough Glee STILL needs a new Musical Director Our women’s choir is 28 strong and we are in need of a new MD from September. We love to sing popular music of different genres and eras to the best of our ability, while having fun! We meet on Tuesdays in term time 7.30pm – 8.30pm. Some of us read music and our MD provides audio tracks of our parts to help us practice between rehearsals. We sing music in two and three parts and use backing tracks for our accompaniment. We would like a new MD who is friendly, enthusiastic and encouraging, who is skilled at selecting, and sometimes arranging, repertoire for us and who will conduct our local performances 3-4 times per year

Update Broadford Bridge Exploratory Drilling Site, Adversane On July 7th, the Environment Agency, EA, approved a variation to the environmental permit applied for by UKOG/KOGL regarding its drilling site at Broadford Bridge, Adversane to the south of Billingshurst. This permit has been approved in spite of evidence put by the Council for the Protection of Rural England, CPRE, drawn up by a former EA staff member of some 30 years' standing. Graham Warren not only identified a fault near the drill site but demonstrates how liquids and chemicals used on site could reach the public water supply at Hardham on the River Arun. Essentially the variation represents a complete change in target, in technology and in impacts. KKWG wrote to WSCC planning department to request that the Council insist that the company submit a new planning application accompanied by public consultation. WSCC did not do this, although according to EU Regulations, they should have done and extended the Environmental Impact Assessment to cover the new information submitted by the company. In addition, the original planning permission given to the company Celtique Energie was given by West Sussex County Council, WSCC, in February 2013 along with 23 Conditions. No 2 specified that the project would be "temporary" lasting three years from when work began. Construction of the drilling pad started on September 15 th, 2014 and is thus due to finish this autumn. However, the company which purchased the Petroleum Exploratory Development License No 234, in June 2016, believes they might miss the deadline by 4 to 6 weeks in order to 34 complete flow-testing and complete restoration of the site. They have therefore applied to WSCC to extend their time on site. The application is available for public consultation for 3 weeks from 12 July to 10 August. This will give the local community only its second opportunity - the first chance was 5 years ago - to comment. Any comment will need to include the Planning Reference WSCC/029/17/WC, your name and address plus what you'd like to say! Industrial Anaerobic Digestion Facility blights Plaistow and surrounding villages. A massive slurry lagoon the size of 5 football pitches with a capacity of 22 million gallons has already been built without planning permission at Crouchland Farm, Plaistow. If approved, in excess of 28,000 HGV lorry, tractor and trailer movements a year will invade our once safe and peaceful rural lanes to serve a massive Industrial Biogas Plant. Plaistow, Ifold, Loxwood, Kirdford, Wisborough Green, Alfold, Ebernoe - all will be affected!
CROUCHLAND BIOGAS UPDATE. Crouchland Biogas operate an unlawful, industrial biogas plant in Plaistow. They have been in receipt of millions of pounds of our tax-payer funded, RHI* subsidies for the past four years, despite their lack of planning consent. Their ‘Farm Fuels’ HGVs travel back and forth on our rural lanes transporting feedstock, gas and digestate, whilst we face daily traffic dangers and watch the destruction of verges and road surfaces. A ten day Planning Inquiry will conclude on Monday 31st July, after which the Planning Inspector will have around 6 weeks to make her decision regarding the appeals by Crouchland Biogas against: the refusal of retrospective planning permission and the two enforcement notices requiring the company to remove unauthorised development and to stop operating as a commercial biogas plant. Barristers for the Plaistow & Ifold and Kirdford Parish Councils, West Sussex County Council, Chichester District Council and the Applicant, along with nine independent experts have all taken part in this Inquiry. The Inquiry has extended well beyond the proposed 6 days, thereby stretching the finances of the Parish Councils. A fundraising campaign has been launched to help pay for these substantial costs. Anyone reading this is urged to take a look at our CrowdJustice site and to consider a donation and/or forward the link to carefully considered, appropriate contacts who may also be able to assist. We need a further £40,000. https://www.crowdjustice.com/case/stopcrouchlandbiogas/ See PORE website and register for updates; http://www.pore.org.uk/ See PORE facebook page; https://www.facebook.com/poreorg/ Email for any queries; help@pore.org.uk RHI - Renewable Heat Incentive. Wisborough Green History - JA James E Pearce provides a specialist service to the motor industry designing, building and restoring the bodywork of Bentleys and other quality motor cars. The company is located in Butts Works a short way down a driveway off the green that is identified by a very prominent pre-war petrol pump. It has occupied the workshops since 1969 but the buildings have been in motor trade use since, it is believed, soon after the first world war when the Graveley brothers started their motor business there. Graveley Brothers was run by two brothers Frank Vernon (b1884) and Henry (known as Jack, b1888) who both lived with their mother Kate Graveley at Thornton House that was the old Butts Farm House with the extension now called Pimpernel House. Kate was the niece of Rev John Thornton who was the vicar of the village from 1820 to 1866. The Thornton family owned several properties in the village and built the above-mentioned extension to Butts Farm House during the late nineteenth century to create a single dwelling named Thornton House, see photo taken c1909. 36 The family also owned approximately 16 acres of farmland that is now the site of Butts Meadow estate and Thornton Meadow. The workshops used old Butts Farm buildings; these buildings appear on the 1842 tithe map and were accessed by the same driveway used at present. The aerial photo shows the two main workshops (the one with a grey roof and the one to its left) that were originally used for both agr ic ul tura l an d li v es toc k purposes and which are part of Butts Works to this day. The machine shop was the small building to the left that was relatively new, probably built by Graveley Brothers in the 1920s or thereabouts. It housed lathes, pillar drills, etc all driven by canvas belts that were themselves driven by a long rotating shaft that ran the length of the machine shop and which was driven by an external motor. The machine shop also housed the office but this building was demolished along with the other smaller huts when Thornton Meadow was built. The petrol pumps that provided the service station facility were located at the entrance to the driveway where one survives to this day, though non-working. A tall sign about 12' tall reading 'GARAGE' (see the rather poor photo overleaf) straddled the entrance
AMES E PEARCE (SUSSEX) LTD to the driveway and as the filling station wasn't easily visible from the main road, there were signs beside the main road about 7' by 2' advertising the garage. Incidentally, the notice board on the wall (now part of West Gates) to the left of the garage entrance belonged to the church and it gave details of the church services.

Vernon Graveley was the general manager and his brother Jack was the engineer. In the 1930’s there were three employees, viz. Basil Champion, Walter Dunkerton and Rex Streeter. The photo taken at the entrance to the machine shop and office shows Wally Dunkerton flanked by the two brothers (not sure who's who though). They were agents for Trojan and Jowett cars and vans (see photo), Ford commercial vehicles, and Chevrolet vans and lorries and its successor Bedford. They maintained all makes of cars and motorcycles and most of the delivery vans in the area were serviced by them. A service offered by the garage in the 1930s was to recharge people's accumulators for domestic use, such as powering radios. People usually had two accumulators, one in use and the other being recharged. Accumulators were an early type of battery consisting of a transparent rectangular glass jar with two metal plates immersed in acid and two terminals on top in some ways like a car battery. Boys sometimes collected their recharged family accumulator from Graveley's on their bicycles at great risk of them smashing and spilling acid. Continued next month Richard B

The Gardener’s Calendar
by Ian Clemens
Keep everything well watered especially during prolonged dry spells and don’t forget to feed plants with a general purpose liquid fertiliser. Continue to dead-head annuals and perennials to avoid self-seeding and to encourage prolonged flowering. Stake tall or top heavy Dahlias and Lilies to prevent wind and rain damage. Prune summer flowering shrubs once they have finished blooming. Collect ripened seed and store for next year. Continue to feed tomato plants with a tomato fertiliser and remove leaves lower down on the plant to help with air circulation and prevent disease. Cut back herbs now to encourage a new flush of tasty leaves that you can harvest before the first frosts. Dry or freeze your herbs to use in the kitchen later on. Pinch out the tips of your runner bean plants once they reach the top of their support. This encourages side-shooting and more beans at a manageable height for harvesting. Continue to harvest second early potatoes now and start harvesting your maincrops as the leaves yellow and die back. Keep an eye out for blight on tomatoes and potatoes. Treat with Bordeaux mixture at the first sight or when warnings are issued (for alerts register at www.blightwatch.co.uk) Harvest French and runner beans little and often to ensure a continued supply and prevent them from setting seed. Check for cabbage white butterfly eggs under brassica leaves and squash any that you find. Harvest your fruit trees: cherries, plums, peaches, nectarines and apricots should all be ripe now! Early varieties of apple trees will be ready towards the end of the month. Excesses of autumn raspberries, blackberries or loganberries, can be frozen on trays for a couple of hours and then bagged up for over winter use. Prune the fruited stems of your blackcurrant bushes after harvesting.

Next Market: Thursday 10th August 2017 Wisborough Green Village Hall 8.45am – 12.30pm Summer has well and truly arrived in the village. We’ve had our first heatwave, the lawns are looking a little parched and the children are ready for the long holidays…. The lovely Ian Clemens, known to so many of you, joined us at the market this month with his daughter to sell some of his locally grown vegetables and plants. He had a glorious display of golden beetroot, purple potatoes, heritage carrots, marrows and courgettes aplenty. He deservedly went home with empty baskets and very happy customers. Thank you so much Ian! Well done also to the MacMillan stall, who always have a bountiful supply of cakes, biscuits and goodies. This month 45 they sold out of everything! I was lucky enough to have a slice of one of their Bakewell Tarts. Having Northern grandparents I’m quite partial and very particular about Bakewell, and it was truly one of the best I’ve ever eaten. If you see someone with pointy elbows, stockpiling them at the next market, it will be me! August Market - The next market will be held on Thursday 10th August. We hope you will join us for Sussex produce and hand-made wares. And we are hoping, a new stallholder or two! We are on the look-out for new stall-holders. If you are a local food producer or crafter and would like to know more please contact Mary at wisboroughmarket@gmail.com The market is run entirely by volunteers and we are always on the look-out for helpers. WI Report For our July meeting we were helped by Kate Keays from Chichester District Council as to what we could and couldn’t recycle. She explained how to determine what was plastic or not (scrunch test!) and also explained that the things did not have to be squeaky clean just rinsed out. Small bottle lids, whether metal or plastic should not be recycled as the recycling machine at Ford cannot process them. All the ‘stuff’ that is recycled is baled up and sold and we, as a District, pay £84.40 for every tonne of rubbish that has to go into landfill, so the mantra is REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE. As we do not have a scheduled meeting in August for those of you who would like to meet up on the 3rd August, we are having a taster boule evening at The Foresters, Kirdford. We are meeting at about 6.20 to have a go and for those of you who just want to have a meal and a chat perhaps a little later. Please let Mary know if you would like to play. Happy summer. Weather Watch Wisborough Green Rainfall for June was 52mm – last year 113mm and my 9 yr average 62mm. Gardeners and farmers have been “saved“ several times this year getting good rainfall after warm dry weather. If only we could have more regular gentle rain at night! Highest temperature in June was 27.8°C at Porthmadog (Gwynned) and the coldest temp was recorded at Elphin (Sutherland) minus 0.1°C. Higher night-time temperatures have been notable for several weeks now. In England as a whole sunshine levels were apparently 74% of the average but I reckon Wisborough Green has been sunnier than that . Weathervane
