Pastoral Letter Adventure into Christmas! “She (Mary) will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” Matthew 1:21 This year I spotted my first decorated Christmas tree in the week before Remembrance Sunday! Christmas decorations in shops seem to get earlier and earlier! Obviously I understand the importance of Christmas commercially and the value of Christmas sales to businesses, BUT we miss out on so much because the season and the Sundays leading up to December 25th are what we call in ‘church speak’ Advent, hence the Advent calendars. Advent is itself a Latin word which means ‘expectant waiting’. Advent Sunday is on 29th November, and we will be following through Scripture, the amazing ‘adventure’ of God’s revelation of salvation as foretold by the prophets in the Old Testament. For example, it is not easy to say where or when a mother-to-be will give birth: place, date, time etc, having had the experience of my daughter’s surprise delivery in the back of our car! However the prophet Micah writing hundreds of years before the birth of Jesus tells us that it will be in Bethlehem (Micah 5:2). Mary and Joseph lived in Nazareth and no way would a caring husband have taken his wife on an unnecessary journey unless he had been forced to do so, as was the case here (Luke 2:1-7). My challenge to you is, why not journey with us through Advent to discover the amazing adventure that began hundreds of years before the birth of Jesus, culminating in the fulfilment of a child’s birth that held together the hopes of not just God’s people, the Jews, but all humankind. Have a great Advent and a very special Christmas. Clive and Marion

Church Notices Family Support Work Basket On December 2nd Judy Moorey will be joining a ‘Workforce’ to pack 100 hampers for FSW families for Christmas. It would be fantastic to receive beautiful foods in the basket - lovely biscuits, Christmas puds, good tins (ham, fruit), chocs, toiletries, etc. NO toys or fresh foods, please. Contact Judy on 01403 700700 if you can help. Thank you to all those who faithfully supply so much for families in need.

Prayer Ministry in our Services If you would like prayers for healing for yourself or a loved one on the first, third and fourth Sundays of each month, two members of the team are available in the Lady Chapel to pray with you during the administration of Communion. You do not need to say anything or be specific about what is troubling you if you don’t wish to. This can be a very special and peaceful time and a great comfort. 5

Prayer Chain of Prayer Worried about a loved one, a friend or yourself and would like prayers to be said by a chain of people? Contact Wendy 700295 or Gillian 700157 and they will start the chain by contacting the person next to them on the list and so it goes all the way round. A copy of the chain is on the notice board at the back of church. Prayer is a powerful and important part of life and one should never under estimate its effect. You don't need to give any details of the problem just ask for prayers to be said and it will happen. Please note that it will be treated with total confidentiality.

Prayers are offered for parishioners who are in special need, especially the sick and frail. Please advise either of the churchwardens of any persons or situations you would like remembered in this way. All those living in particular roads are prayed for regularly, the whole parish being covered over a 12-week cycle: Week beginning:

From the Editor Welcome to the December edition of Ad Vincula. Yet another year has flown by! During the year, we have gradually built up a strong team of hard working volunteers for Ad Vincula. Fran Wallace has been working extremely hard recently on the advertising commitments for next year and it’s worth remembering that, without our advertisers, there would be no free full colour magazine so please support them whenever you can. Our newest recruit to the Team is John Gough who has kindly agreed to take over the role of Distribution Coordinator from next month - a warm welcome, John. Roger Moody will remain involved and will provide a back up to John when needed. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Roger for his hard work over the last few years in organising the band of volunteer “deliverers”. Last, but by no means least, a heartfelt thanks to all our willing volunteer deliverers who trudge the streets in all weathers to bring your magazine to your door. In addition to the usual articles this month, I would just highlight “A Note from the Treasurer” (p13), the Sideshows Society 2016 Dinner (p15), a report of the fund raising event for the Syrian Refugees (p17) and the Advent Christmas Tree Festival (p21). Please note the earlier copy deadline next month of 10 December! Finally, a very Happy Christmas to all our readers from the Ad Vincula Team. Wisborough Green Primary School News With only a few school weeks to go until we break for Christmas we are already busy with our preparations for the festive season. We have welcomed two new children and two new members of staff to our team this term and I know they will be happy in our friendly community. On our first day back we were invaded by the Roman Army with their amazing catapults ready to battle. The children thoroughly enjoyed the experience and can tell some gruesome stories about the Rotten Romans! We were lucky to have a visit from Ms. Noreen Bahadur, the Principal of Myer’s College, Chakwal in Pakistan and she thoroughly enjoyed her stay with us. The children enjoyed listening to stories she told and she felt inspired by many of the experiences she had at Wisborough Green. We are planning to continue to develop our links with her in the hope of a return visit to her school. It wasn't only the children who returned to school after half term but a whole menagerie of nocturnal and woodland animals. Despite their good behaviour I am glad to say the snake, black fox, tarantula, rats and mice all safely left the building at the end of the day! Our brilliant PTA organised a fantastic firework event with a huge bonfire that was a great success. The spectacular fireworks danced to the 1812 Overture with the echoes of awe and wonder from the crowds below. Thank you to everyone for supporting this event. As we took a moment to think and reflect during our remembrance assembly the children thought about everyone who might be affected by war. The day was made more memorable with a visit from Mrs Pont and her amazing dog Ladybug. Having been rescued only eight weeks previously from Afghanistan, where she took refuge with the American soldiers, she presented as the calmest, gentle and well behaved dog I have ever seen. Our Year 6 children organised a brilliant cake sale for Children in Need to raise funds for children across the country. They spent the morning baking delicious cakes and used their mathematical skills to calculate the ingredients and how to make a profit for this worthy cause. I know the rest of the term promises to be just as exciting as the past two weeks and look forward to this special time of year at Wisborough Green Primary School Mrs Amanda Harrison, Headteacher 01403 700280 11

Wey & Arun Canal Trust NATURE PARK’S VIEWING PLATFORM OFFICIALLY OPENED A PICNIC area where people will eventually be able to watch a canal being restored was officially opened on Saturday October 24th. Around 100 people watched Guildford MP Anne Milton launch the outdoor dining site – on a viewing platform in Hunt Nature Park, alongside the A281 Horsham Road at Shalford. Mrs Milton unveiled a commemorative plaque in the centre of the unusual hexagonal decking, which is in a wildlife park created by the Wey & Arun Canal Trust (WACT). The platform, on the route of the waterway being restored by the trust, currently offers views across the Cranleigh Waters stream to veteran oak trees, meadowland and shallow ponds. But Philip Oliver, manager of WACT’s Bramley Link project, told the crowd it would be an ideal place to watch the canal being re-created when the time comes. Explaining the Trust’s plans for bringing the canal back to life in the area, he said the park demonstrated the commitment to creating a ‘green corridor’ along the length of the waterway. The Trust’s chairman, Sally Schupke, also stressed the intention of extending the linear park down towards Bramley. “It’s great to be providing facilities which benefit the people of Guildford, Shalford, Bramley and the surrounding villages and the many people who come here on the Wey-South Path,” she said. Mrs Milton declared the viewing platform open following entertainment by a lively local band and the serving of refreshments to those present. She praised the work of the Trust in establishing the park as part of its plan to restore the Wey & Arun Canal from Shalford to Pallingham in West Sussex. “There are wonderful views from here and I hope people come and enjoy this excellent facility which is so close to the centre of Guildford,” she added. Hunt Nature Park is on land leased by WACT from Surrey County Council. It is being developed using a bequest from Trust supporters Doris and Hunt. Restoration of the first stretch of the canal’s Bramley Link recently received a major boost with the signing of a lease to use farmland owned by Susan and Malcolm Brenton. 12

A Note from the Treasurer Yes, it is that time of the year. As you may know Liz Atkinson stepped down this past September as Treasurer of the Parochial Church Council (PCC) after five faithful serving years. She conducted the financial affairs in a very clear and efficient way that has made the turnover in a very seamless and easy way for me to be able to take over the duties. Nevertheless, I still have some things to catch up on. As a first duty, the PCC would think me remiss in my new role of Treasurer if I did not offer a short note at this time of the year about .....yes finance. We are very fortunate at St Peters to have a very stable and solid financial support from its parishioners. In this past year of incumbent change we have continued our financial support to the diocese that was asked of us, financed our programmes and made significant gifts to many charitable causes in our outreach. On behalf of the PCC I thank you for that support. Our financial picture at St Peters is sound and at PCC we do look to make efficiencies where possible and to look at ways to be as prudent as we can in caring for the resources that we have. However our expenditures do go up year on year and we would not want if at all possible to cut our programmes and outreach. For this reason I would urge you to continue and if possible increase your giving in the coming year. For your guidance the Government Pension increase (CPI) for 2016 will be 2.5%. For those who give to the Parish Giving Scheme (PGS), thank you. This is the most efficient way in which to contribute, they collect in the donation, obtain the gift aid and send the funds directly to our account each month. For those who donate by direct debit themselves again thanks, but I ask if you would also consider taking up the PGS. In case you were unaware the bank does deduct a service charge for each DD. For those who generously give through the pew blue envelope also thanks and I would ask if you also would consider donating on a regular basis also through the PGS. If you would like to know more about the PGS there is information on the web at www.parishgivingscheme.org.uk The PGS has over 10,000 parishioners and over 500 parishes participating, it is a very confidential service and donations can be made if you so wish on an anonymous basis and any gifts or changes can be made and communicated directly with PGS. Please e-mail me at Moonraker_18018@Yahoo.com if you would like further information and I would be pleased to send you an enrolment form. Thanks again for your parish support in 2015. KKWG Update Boxal Bridge: Following the discussion by WSCC on October 16th, the Parishes are still waiting to hear from WSCC Highways Dept about plans to draw up a mutually agreeable plan. The last 6 inspections established that the bridge is sound and capable of carrying current traffic levels but clearly needs some repair and maintenance. The county has not got enough money to improve signage although that would help reduce the risks along that stretch of road. As a Councillor said, "If the bridge is safe why are we debating the issue at all?" Good question. KKWG: is delighted to report that Celtique Energie has repaid KKWG’s costs incurred facilitating the group's participation in the Public Inquiry which was triggered when Celtique Energie appealed the rejection by WSCC Planning Committee of their application for Oil/gas exploration. This is as a consequence of the company's actions having wasted time. Thank you to all who have supported the group since we learned of the application in May 2013! Film: The Keep Billingshurst Frack Free group put on a screening of Voices from the Gasfield on November 7th in the Billingshurst Centre. The film was narrated by Ian Crane, former oil worker, who had crowdfunded the project raising the money to enable him to visit Queensland and talk to local people. The film showed the area and water supplies to be devastated and, as local residents said, "it started with one well". It has been estimated that there will be 40,000 coal seam gas wells in Australia. The testimony by residents was most moving. Thank you to the group for bringing it to our attention. Best wishes, Jill Dr Jill Sutcliffe, Chair KKWG, 01403 700395

HELPING THE REFUGEES FROM SYRIA Many of us enjoyed a wonderful interlude of warm hearted hospitality, chat, and nourishment at Judy’s on 22 October, whilst being told by first hand experience of the plight of the Syrian refugees on the island of Leros. Joel Gage, has spent a good part of his young life on the Greek Islands, and whilst intending to holiday on the Island of Leros, this September, he was so dramatically touched by the plight of the 2-400 refugees arriving every day, that he stayed to help the situation. Two of Joel’s friends had been working on the island as volunteers with the volunteer team for many months, and in joining with them Joel was pouring half cups of milk for toddlers, filling bottles with formula milk for babies, and making bread and cheese sandwiches for adults every morning, a similar menu was distributed in the evening. The refugees spend approximately 1-2 days in a compound with one portaloo, one trough for washing oneself, and until very recently when sleeping mats arrived, they had either the bare soil or a piece of cardboard to sleep on. Following this they sleep in a tent camp, or if that's full- on the streets. After two or three days the people are then transported by ship to the mainland, must pay their own fares and make their own way to wherever? The volunteers, all of them, then get ready for the next group of people and so continues the difficult emotional work to help fellow human beings. Medicins Sans Frontieres have now placed two people on the Island of Leros, so helping with first aid and long term illnesses. Also there are two International helpers from the United Nations refugee agency. Aid by way of warm clothes for the onward journey is coming through from Sweden; poncho’s being one of the most useful garments at the moment. Joel related a full story of a young man’s experience of his journey from Damascus to Dusseldorf. This young dentist is at this moment waiting for his case to be heard by a German court and if granted asylum his wish is to work as soon as is possible and then aid his sister to join him in Europe. Joel told us that in his experience, most of the people fleeing Syria would want to return to their home country when it would be “safe” to do so; the story was very moving. We were able to see Joel’s pictures of life as it exists in the compound in Leros, as well as scenes of the occasional joy that the volunteers are able to give. (Continued on page 19)

Many friends joined Judy and Doris to a splendid array of cakes and cookies, hot soups and bread, listening to and sharing in the plight and experiences of people for whom we are trying to add a little comfort; which we did by raising the wonderful sum of £750.00. Joel organised the money to reach his friends, the volunteers, directly within three days and must now resume his job of work in this country. We can find out more on: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Leros- solidarity-Network-TeamUK/1477725875863752 Judy 700700 and Doris 700606 thank everyone most sincerely for their most generous donations.

The Gardener’s Calendar

by Ian Clemens

Start to prune your Wisteria, climbing roses, vines and fruit trees.

Leave the faded flower heads on your hydrangeas until the spring, as they will provide frost protection to the swelling buds further down the stems.

Move containers of shrubs or bedding plants to a sheltered spot; clustering them together helps protect the root systems from suffering frost damage.

Take hardwood cuttings from suitable trees and shrubs.

Lift and divide established clumps of rhubarb to renew the plant's vigour.

Remove yellowing leaves from your winter brassicas as they are no use to the plant and may harbour pests and diseases. Cover with netting to protect them from pigeons.

Dig over empty borders and pile manure on top - let the worms and frosts break up the clods of soil.

Apply glue bands or grease bands to the trunks of fruit trees to prevent wingless female winter moths climbing the trunks and laying their eggs in the branches.

Plant raspberry canes now whilst they are dormant.

Plant blueberries for an attractive addition to the fruit garden. 19

Beekeeping for Beginners Day - a Taster A one day course will take place in Pulborough on Saturday March 5th 2016 to provide information for people who think they may like to investigate taking up beekeeping. This is an annual event, now in its eleventh year, run by the Wisborough Green Beekeepers Association. The event is tailored for those who may have had a long term interest, but aren’t sure if beekeeping is for them or not. All the information needed to become a beekeeper will be given in the presentation. There are free follow-up sessions at the well equipped Wisborough Green teaching apiary, for those who think they will be able to manage and wish to go further. This provides the opportunity to learn and achieve competence on someone else’s facilities, under supervision, before buying bees and equipment. The course is also suitable for those who may have just started beekeeping, but have had little or no guidance. The presentation will be by two very experienced beekeepers, with several others available during break times to provide advice and information. The Wisborough Green BKA covers a wide catchment area, with members in West Sussex and South Surrey. For those a bit further afield, details of surrounding Associations will be available on the day. Even if you may not be interested yourself, but know someone who might be, please let them know, or maybe you are looking for an unusual, but useful present for someone - well, here it is! Vouchers are available. Further information for beekeepers and non-beekeepers can be found on the Wisborough Green Beekeepers Association website www.wgbka.org.uk. You can find further details of the Beginners Day on the Events page. For course details, contact Roger Patterson: roger-patterson@btconnect.com, 01403 790637 or 07976 306492, or Gordon Allan 01798 343470, petworthgordon@btopenworld.com to book.

Recipe of the Month Honey and Brandy Ice-Cream This ice-cream is absolutely delicious and goes really well with mincemeat tart, mince pies or Christmas pudding instead of brandy butter. The good thing about it is that it doesn't require an ice-cream maker it just goes straight into the freezer. It is best eaten within 7 days as it can go a bit rubbery. Ingredients  4 eggs, separated  5oz/140g caster sugar  5 tablespoons brandy  5 tablespoons clear, runny honey  1 pint / 600ml double cream Method 1. Beat the egg yolks and sugar until light and fluffy and increased in volume. This is best done with an electric whisk. 2. Add the honey and beat again. 3. Whisk the cream until it just holds its shape and then add the brandy and whisk again. 4. Whisk the egg whites until they stand in stiff peaks. 5. Fold the cream and egg whites alternately into the egg yolk mixture. 6. Pour into a container and allow to freeze. Helen V

Wisborough Green History - FROM Continuing the series of articles on the Poorhouse that was most recently published in last year's March issue, I thought it about time that I finished the story. The six articles published covered its beginnings in the early part of the eighteenth century when the parish erected the three-storey poorhouse that became our village hall. It is thought that it was built in the Queen Anne period 1702 to 1714 but this is not definite. However, we know that the poorhouse was in operation in 1737 as the first governor was appointed in July that year. There have been suggestions that it was built on the foundations of a Benedictine monastery quite possibly reusing the original sandstone but there's nothing to confirm this, however a historic survey in 1950 stated that "the older houses and the courtyard walls are remains of monastic buildings. The three-storey building was originally similar to the sandstone part of the village hall but inside were three floors of living, cooking and dormitory accommodation. The newer parts added since are the bar and committee room circa 1800, the kitchen and Vine Room in the early part of the nineteenth century, the main entrance in 1955 and the flat-roofed extension into the car park in 1976. The most significant change was the southern extension built in two stages. Firstly, there was an extension built from 1788 to 1797 that is now the Committee Room, bar and maisonette. Secondly, a southward extension to the above built from 1797 until c1807. This was a severe-looking three-storey brick built extension and cellar attached to the southern end of the above extension. See the 1938 map. There are also three further items of interest on the map that weren't covered before. Firstly, a small building that was once free standing and went partly across the entrance to the car park. This was older than the kitchen and Vine Room that was built and connected to it during the early nineteenth century. This later became the doctors' waiting room before being demolished to open up the car park when the poorhouse was converted to our village hall. Close to the churchyard wall was a large gabled single-storey toilet building. It was separated from the south wing by a gap of about 20’ that gave access to the garden and the rear outside staircase to the upper floors. No trace of this now exists but it must have been a daunting place to visit during cold winter evenings. A point of interest concerns the low ground-level arch built into the churchyard wall close to the iron gate (and just where the toilets were), the purpose of which is unknown. Perhaps it was used in conjunction with the toilets and possibly for discharge of waste? When the poorhouse south garden was converted into a car park in 1956 (when the 30

M POORHOUSE TO VILLAGE HALL 7 building was rebuilt into the village hall), the ground level at the left-hand end was raised by over a foot so that the arch would have been higher off the original ground level. Look at the line of holes in the wall and compare it with the level of the car park. It shows just how much the ground level of the original poorhouse garden was raised. These post holes would have been used to support beams for what were probably shelters for the domestic animals that we know were kept by the inmates. A small single-storey keeper’s cottage was attached to the north-east corner of the poorhouse and appears in the centre of the postcard photo that dates from the early 1900s. This was demolished in 1956 soon after the major part of the south wing was demolished. Its northern and eastern walls still stand with the cottage’s front door opening and doorstep being used as the front gate to the maisonette named The Old Workhouse. The site of one of the cottage fireplaces is evident in the eastern wall of the maisonette as is an inverted V indicating the cottage roof profile. The garden east of the village hall belongs to the maisonette. The law required the inmates to grow their own fruit and vegetables and this area was used for vegetable growing. This is borne out by some distinct dips, some very deep, in the lawn area. A small building at the north-east tip of the garden was probably used as a mortuary for deceased inmates. It is brick built, with a solid floor, sash window, and a lathe and plaster ceiling. A twin track path, partly hidden under grass, leads from the building to a gate in the north wall adjacent to the church gate entrance and out to the church path. It has been suggested that this would have been used for coffins to be wheeled to the churchyard for burial. Richard B.

Neighbourhood Watch - Crime News & Advice Keep your home secure this Winter How secure is your home? Check? Do you pass the burglary prevention test?

Daily Security  Keep all wallets, purses, credit cards and car keys out of sight and out of reach.  If you leave your house empty, even if you are in the back garden, lock all the doors and windows.  An intruder alarm can be an effective deterrent against burglars, seek advice to ensure it is the most suitable for your needs.  Make it a habit to mark your valuables by using your postcode and house number or name.  Some articles are unsuitable for marking so photograph them next to a ruler.  Register your property at immobilise.com, it's free of charge and can increase your chances of being reunited with your property.

After dark  Leave some lights on if it will be dark before you get home  When you go out in the evening, always leave a light on in a room that can not be peered into from the road  Fit security lighting - either dusk to dawn energy efficient lighting that will come on automatically as dusk sets in, or infrared activated lighting which draws attention to movement.

Front door security  Don't let anyone into your home that you don't know. Always ask for identification offical visitors won't mind being asked for ID.  Fit a door chain, if you have a solid front door, fit a wide angle door viewer.

In the garden  Ensure that gates or access to the rear of the house are locked and secure  Trim overgrown plants - don't give burglars a hiding place.  Secure garden tools and ladders in a locked shed or garage to prevent them being used to break into your home. Fit outside security lighting and a visible burglar alarm to help deter burglars.

Stay secure Burglars know the price of everything but the value of nothing. The best defence against burglary is prevention. In an emergency, or if you see a crime in progress, always call 999 (Continued on page 43)

Local Club and Society News Wisborough Green History Society At the end of another active year we can look back on a very interesting visit to the Gridshell at the Weald and Downland Open Air Museum, where we were shown artefacts that originated in the village. These included a dung drag and a dock lifter recovered from the village pond; a mash oar and a butter spoon from Harsfold Farm and a grain shovel from Sparr Farm. We saw milk bottles from Sweephurst Farm Dairy including one with a Mickey Mouse motif on it. The grave marker would have been brightly painted and inscribed with the name of the deceased. We continued our programme of tours for U3A groups which have been very well received and pursued our project documenting and photographing significant properties in the village. Sadly during the year we had to say goodbye to our treasurer as Grace Stewart, a valued and long-standing member, has had to move away. We wish her well in her new home. We look forward to another interesting year in 2016. The society meets every second Tuesday in the month in the village hall committee room at 10.30 am - new members are always welcome. Wisborough Green Short Mat Bowls Club The last of the singles quarter final matches have now been played, with Bernard Adsett beating Jane Adsett and Joan Goodchild beating Audrey Hodgson. We've had quite a busy period in our friendly matches firstly against Comptons from Horsham who play in County Wide division 2 of the West Sussex league. We won comfortably on both mats with Jane Adsett, David Luxford, Bernard Adsett and Monica Enticknap winning 23-11 on Mat 1 and Evelyn Ringrose, Marilyn Knight, Tony Broughton and Reg Snelgar winning 15-12 on Mat 2. Then we played Ewhurst from the Surrey league again winning on both mats, with Jane Adsett, David Luxford, Bernard Adsett and Monica Enticknap winning 18-14 and Evelyn Ringrose, Marilyn Knight, Tony Broughton and Reg Snelgar winning 18-15 on Mat 2. Finally we had a disappointing defeat in our 'local derby’ against Pulborough, although Jane Adsett, David Luxford, Bernard Adsett and Monica Enticknap won a hard fought game 25-22 on mat 1. But unfortunately Evelyn Ringrose, Sue Taber, Tony Broughton and Reg Snelgar lost 16-24 on mat 2 and Jean Head, Joan Goodchild, Marilyn Knight and Pauline Shipway lost 8-32 on mat 3. Wisborough Green Farmers’ and Village Market News

Next Market - Thursday 10th December 2015 Wisborough Green Village Hall 9 am – 12.30 pm NEW – Traditional onion seller from Brittany, who used to come to Kirdford and was thoroughly recommended by Paul Killingbeck. Pascal will be bringing strings of Roscoff onions, strings of Brittany garlic as well as strings of banana shaped shallots. Very decorative and would make a great gift. NEW – sort of. The owner of the fish business, Sebastian, came with a boat and delighted us by his warm smile and clear information about prices for multiple buys. The fish looked so tempting that I bought the last dressed fresh crab. One shopper asked about his favourite, whitebait, and next month will get his wish fulfilled. Now there's an idea. Anything extra special, do ask. Sebastian does food markets in London and has a massive turnover so his fish is fresh. NEW – Gluten free Christmas puddings from Felicia, of Flashy Foods. All their products are gluten free. Gluten free sausages from Nik adds to his collection of sausages including one with Hebridean seaweed, as a healthy alternative to salt, I guess. His home grown turkeys are in great demand. Nik really enjoys rearing them as they go back to their indoor areas all by themselves. Remember the delicatessen foods and the locally grown lamb, pork and much more. Remember the beautiful breads, the local cheeses including the goats cheese produced near Pulborough. Remember the cards and wrapping paper. Christmas wreaths and pots of bright cyclamen. Home made jams and chutneys and cakes from Macmillan. Loads of potential presents from mini Christmas cakes, chilli sauces, beauty and health products, children's books, handicraft decorative items, the ever popular scarfs and bags and presents for your pets. When you are finished enjoy the Macmillan coffee and cake. Happy browsing, The Wisborough Green Farmers’ and Village Market Committee 37

Wisborough Green Horticultural Society Monday 7th December 2015 8pm Village Hall Talk by Lesley Chamberlain on “Gertrude Jeykell Garden.” Last year we had a novel experience. Our speaker did not arrive, but we have found her and here she will be giving the talk she would have done then. Many gardeners know the name of the subject of the talk through their appreciation of roses. This one has a strong intense perfume. Now whether the gardener Gertrude wore perfume, who knows? She was formidable gardener with a very individual approach to design and plantings. Indeed Gertrude changed the face of British gardening. Her legacy lives on in so many gardens. Gertrude's Lutyens deigned home, Munstead Wood at Godalming, used to be open to the public but the latest owners now only open by appointment made with the gardener on 01483 417867. More info on line. Lesley herself is a well experienced lecturer on specialist cruises as well as a garden consultant and designer. If you can come, then do bring a friend as a visitor to enjoy a pleasant informative evening with lots of lovely photos and stay on for chats afterwards and refreshments (no charge). Visitors are always welcome. November's Meeting and Talk by Helen Yemm went down a storm. Helen and our chairman had us chuckling and giggling. One of Helen's sayings is “When in doubt rely on your intuition”. We gardeners do not have to know everything; we just learn fast. Another tip – buzz tape to keep birds from our crops. You have heard of the Chelsea Chop? Helen does the Hampton Court Hack in July on plants like Alchemillas . Makes them look presentable in August and September. No Meeting and Talk in January as in previous years. Our dormancy period? . Aija Hamilton

WI Report Well it’s now safe to come out of the closet, the Annual Meeting is over for another year and all posts were filled! Members started off with wine and nibbles and proceded to the business of the meeting which included a comprehensive report on our past activities by Dottie Smith and the President’s report by Mary Benson with Christine Serna presenting the accounts for the past year with the budget for the next. The raffle money for the year of £135 will be sent to The Mary Howe Trust. Some fund raising has to be done in the next year and Speakers are not getting any less expensive. Members were threatened with the Jumble Sale idea if no other suggestions were made! Mary had made a magnificent cake to celebrate our 25 th birthday which we all tucked into during the quiz that Jane had prepared. Our next meeting on Thursday 3rd December is, of course, our Xmas party. Finger food on a plate, and a wrapped present to the value of £3 should be brought please. We will be entertained by KIFRA (Look it up!). I’m just off to find my baubles and tinsel, see you there. Sue Nicholls 01403 700827 Mary Benson (President) 01403 700284 40

Wealden Trefoil Guild Our meeting in October was used to complete the filling and wrapping of the shoe boxes for the ‘Link to Hope’ appeal. We had well over a dozen boxes filled with useful items for the charity to distribute to needy people in Romania, Bulgaria, Moldova and Ukraine. We then had a long discussion on our plans for our meetings in 2016, the result being a mixture of speakers, crafts and outings which we are all looking forward to. The November meeting saw us making Christmas star decorations from instructions given by Jackie (some with more difficulty than others!) but none the less everyone produced a beautiful result. We were also delighted to welcome two new members to the Guild on that evening. Later in the month we will be giving vocal support to the local Brownie Unit when they Carol sing for the residents of Osmond Court. This is an evening that is always enjoyed by everyone, which will get us all into the Christmas spirit. In December we will be celebrating with our Guild Christmas meal at one of our members’ homes. That will conclude a full and enjoyable year of Trefoil Guild meetings and we will all be looking forward to the New Year and all it has to offer. You do not have to be an ex-member of Girlguiding to join us, so visitors and new members are always welcome – please contact our Chairman Mrs Jackie Sharp (01403 784490) or our Secretary Mrs Hilary Nulty (01403 783792) Teri Maher

CYBER TIPS Every time that you listen to the news on TV or radio there are subjects that are bound to be discussed. Cyber crime is one of them, and powerful warnings and advice are repeated time and time again. Yet people are still being caught out and giving away huge sums of money to criminals. I am quite sure that if someone were to knock at your door and ask for your personal details, you would send him away and report the incident to the police. So put the phone down or delete the email! . Criminals who target us can only be successful if we allow them to be! Peter Edmonds 41

TalkTalk cyber attack - advice on protecting yourself An announcement of a cyber attack on TalkTalk's website has raised customer concerns about details being accessed and how they can protect themselves. Detective Inspector Andy Haslam, of the CyberCrime Unit for Sussex and Surrey Police, offers the following advice:·  It's very difficult to prevent your data being lost or stolen when it is held by someone else  Once you are aware that you might be affected make sure you look at the advice being given by the company  Be mindful that any online criminals may see this as an opportunity they can exploit not just those who potentially compromised talk talk.  Be cautious of emails which purport to be from talk talk, particularly any which request you to open an attachment such as a word document, or to click on a link or provide any account information or private details. They may be offering a benefit like compensation or raising your fears of financial loss to try and get your information.

Steps to take:  If you have passwords or pin numbers that you share across different accounts, particularly the same as talk talk, then consider changing them straight away.  Make sure you let your bank know that the account needs to be monitored for transactions.  Consider contacting the credit check agencies mentioned on the talk talk website.  Update any patches on your devices and make sure you have a good anti-virus programme on all your laptops, phones and tablets. Although the above is issued as a result of the TalkTalk attack, the advice is equally relevant to other similar situations. If you have information about any crime call 101, email: 101@sussex.pnn.police.uk or call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. If you see a crime taking place call 999.
