Pastoral Letter “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call Him Immanuel’ (which means ‘God with us’) Matthew 1:23 There are some very clever TV commercials that our leading High Street retailers have produced this year. There is now an annual expectation, even anticipation in some quarters, for some remarkable CGI (computer generated images) to enthral us. These mini sagas convey in visual form something of the allure of the products only available at ….. for Christmas 2017! Back in the real world, we here at St Peter’s will have many of the regular Christmas expectations found at this time of the year: carols, mince pies, mulled wine, nativity ….. we cherish them all, as we celebrate Christmas. The truth of the Christmas message is encapsulated in the Scripture verse above with the Hebrew word ‘Immanuel’ translated ‘God with us’. Christians believe that in an incredible, supernatural way God came to us in human form, lived on this earth and from the age of thirty transformed the world around Him, that has never been the same since. That is the Good News of the Gospels in the New Testament. Jesus came to a broken world that still needs His healing, forgiveness and love. ‘For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the 5 world but to save the world through Him (John 3:16 & 17). Christmas is about the beginning of a remarkable life that changed the world and continues to change the lives of those who believe in Him. The Bible tells us that, God is for us, God is with us and God is in us through His Holy Spirit as we continue to share the Good News that His Son came to bring to each and every generation throughout the year. Regular Church Activities PRAYER GROUP AND QUIET MORNINGS If anyone would like to spend half an hour in fellowship and prayer then they are most welcome on a Tuesday at 4.30pm, when prayers are said for the life of the Parish. Prayer Chain of Prayer Worried about a loved one, a friend or yourself and would like prayers to be said by a chain of people? Contact Wendy 700295 or Gillian 700157 and they will start the chain by contacting the person next to them on the list and so it goes all the way round. A copy of the chain is on the notice board at the back of church. Prayer is a powerful and important part of life and one should never under estimate its effect. You don't need to give any details of the problem just ask for prayers to be said and it will happen. Please note that it will be treated with total confidentiality.

Prayers are offered for parishioners who are in special need, especially the sick and frail. Please advise either of the churchwardens of any persons or situations you would like remembered in this way. Attention Brick Kiln Common Residents, your Parish Magazine Delivery-----HELP NEEDED PLEASE! As you may already know, Anne Wood is stopping her monthly deliveries of your Parish Magazine (from Nov 2017). Her long service has been much appreciated. In order for you all to continue to receive Ad Vincula delivered to your door, I am asking for a volunteer to take over Anne’s round. There are 13-mags for delivery in Brick Kiln Common area which includes ‘Fowlers’ and ‘Little Stones’. I get a delivery of 900 copies from the printers during the last week of each month and I sort them ready for the individual volunteers to collect or receive from me. Some copies do go to WG-Post Office and residents can decide to collect their own copies. However, home delivery works better for the community. Wisborough Green Primary School News It really has been an explosive term, in more ways than one! The fireworks evening was incredibly successful and once again the PTA made an amazing amount of money. Our fundraising focus this year is for the outside environment. We are developing a 'Secret Garden' for our Forest School area so the children can explore the wonder of the great outdoors. The funds from the PTA events allow us to buy some amazing resources, for all the children, and we really are very grateful. Developing the computing curriculum is high on our agenda this year. We have purchased some exciting equipment to help the children develop coding skills. They explored Ozobots, Ollies and coded a Minecraft game, learning vital skills to prepare them for the future. You can watch the Ozobot race on Twitter - @WGPS864 Listening to the children speak passionately about our school is something that makes me feel very proud. The parents who visited our school on the open days, were very impressed with the maturity our school ambassadors showed. So what makes Wisborough Green so unique? We are able to offer a very personalised curriculum, to meet all individual needs. Our talented musicians enjoyed composing songs using their electric guitars, our talented runners 11 ran with determination at the locality cross country competition and our talented artists created some stunning designs. Everyone is unique in their own special way and our role is to help all children discover their inner talents. As the term has progressed, so has the building work. There has been an explosion of work across the school. By the end of the project there will be: a new year 6 classroom, junior toilets, new hall windows, a group room for meetings, a new office space and an enlarged car park. The staff and children have been amazingly resilient to change and disruption during this time and I feel lucky to work with such a brilliant team. The school governors are another team working hard to support the school. We do have another vacancy on the governing body and would love to have someone from the local community join us on our continual journey of improvement. If you would like to find out more about becoming a school governor and what is involved in the role, then please contact the school office. As we approach the season of goodwill, we are looking forward to our annual celebrations. The Christmas nativity rehearsals are underway, our special visitor will be visiting us for a mince pie and the Wisborough Green Pantomime could be the highlight of the year again! ‘Outstanding’ new canal bridge wins award The Wey & Arun Canal Trust has been commended for an outstanding contribution to the nation’s waterways. The trust was one of the finalists at the 2017 Living Waterways Awards, which recognised its achievement in building the new Compasses Bridge at Alfold in Surrey. Representatives received the commendation at a gala ceremony in Birmingham, where the Canal & River Trust rewarded inspiring waterway-based improvement projects across the UK. Compasses Bridge, which was officially opened in October 2016 by Dame Penelope Keith, Patron of the Surrey Hills, was entered in the Community and Volunteering category. The bridge replaced a 1930s concrete causeway, a major obstacle to navigation on the canal’s summit level on the site of the original 19th century bridge. Contractors built the reinforced shell for the new bridge alongside the causeway. Volunteers finished most of the rest of the construction work, including laying the facing brickwork and the landscaping, and demolished the causeway. The Compasses project was managed by Wey & Arun Canal Trust board member Tony Ford, who said the award was deserved recognition of the skills of the construction volunteers. “The completed bridge will be handed over to the local highway authority, so the work of the volunteers had to meet their requirements for drainage, paving, fencing and earthworks,” said Tony. “This was achieved whilst maintaining good relations with the residents of adjacent properties and with the owners and operators of Dunsfold aerodrome. The bridge is a heavily used access to the aerodrome, so the work of our volunteers had to be carefully planned around their events programme.” Those who worked on the project included members of the trust’s own northern working party, which is led by volunteer Dave Evans, and visiting branches of the Waterway Recovery Group, an arm of the Inland Waterways Association. Compasses Bridge is at the Alfold entrance to the Dunsfold Park aerodrome and business complex, on what was once the main road between Guildford and Horsham. It is in the middle of a 1¼ mile section of the canal between Tickner’s Heath and Fast Bridge on the A281. Around half of this length has so far been restored for navigation by small boats, with plans being made to complete the desilting. The bridge, which is near the Wey-South Path long-distance walking route devised by the trust, has a viewing platform with an information board where the public can enjoy the enhanced environment. The chief executive of the Canal & River Trust, Richard Parry, commented after the award ceremony: “These annual awards give us the opportunity to celebrate the tireless efforts of those who are helping to transform the nation’s rivers, canals, lochs, lakes, and reservoirs, making them exciting vibrant places where people want to be.”

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR JOINING US! This year’s bonfire night event at Wisborough Green School was as special as ever! The weather could not have been more perfect, and it was certainly a full house! Aurora Fireworks provided yet another stunning display for which we are immensely grateful, and the bonfire burned more brightly than ever! We are truly thankful to all of those who came along to watch, to those businesses that supported us through sponsorship, advertising and provision of prizes for our Autumn prize draw, and also of course to the Davies family for use of their field, and the Lee family for helping us to build the bonfire!

We are still awaiting our grand fundraising total for this year, but we are very sure it is going to be a record breaker, with the funds going to improve the outside learning experience and facilities at our beautiful village school. The children and parents of Wisborough Green want to say a whizz-popping, rocket roaring, banging thank you!

Village Hall News I am sorry to say that, at the time of writing, we have not received a decision from Chichester DC regarding our planning application. We did have a very constructive meeting with the planning officer in early November but still await a final decision. Hopefully, I will be able to report something more positive next month. JUST A THOUGHT A small village ‘up north', just like ours, has introduced ‘knock and check’. It involves local folks taking responsibility for the street/road where they live, and once maybe twice a week just knocking on your neighbour’s door/s to ask if they are alright. I do not think it is too onerous a task. I have passed this thought to several of my friends in the village and they have said they would be prepared to take part in the scheme. WISBOROUGH GREEN VILLAGE HISTORY SOCIETY Review of the Year 2017 Our January meeting took place in the Church where we had a most interesting talk by Richard Pinkham about the history of the church and the development of the building. We were also shown some of the vestments and admired the beautiful embroidery on them done by some of the ladies of the village. The Society was asked by the Parish Council to help prepare walking trails around the village. These will include a trail around the centre of the village with information about some of the buildings as well as several walks further afield. Members have been working on this project during the year. We welcomed visits by groups from St. Gabriel's Church in Billingshurst and the U3A. Both groups enjoyed the Society's talk about our lovely village. As a result of one of these visits we were told about the life of a local postman in the 1890s. Frederick Barker cycled from Alfold to Wisborough Green and back twice a day to collect the mail and then deliver it around Alfold. His descendant has given us a photograph of Frederick and his bicycle. We were shown documents including wills, deeds and invoices relating to a plot of land in the village in the ownership of the Manor of Amberley and on which Upfield Villas in Durbans Road now stand. We were pleased to be able to interpret the documents, some of which dated back to 1761, for the owner. They offer a fascinating insight into the changes in ownership of the plot and the various rents and charges attached to it up to its sale by Pat Crichton-Smith to its present owner. Liz Sargeant kindly gave us five copies of her book about Wisborough Green to sell. These have now been sold and ÂŁ50 given to the Village Hall Committee for their renovation work. We have been very pleased to welcome two new members to the Society this year and are always pleased to welcome more! Update Boxal Bridge Many thanks to all who sent messages and filled in and sent forms in order to let WSCC know what we think of their plan to REPLACE BOXAL BRIDGE. Unfortunately, all were ignored and, as of November 9th, this plan has now become WSCC policy as no Councillor called in the plan which was adopted using the WSCC quick decision process.. However, WSCC was "inundated" with objections to this plan and we would like to thank all those who contacted WSCC. The plan has been adopted in face of the evidence, evidence that shows:  Costs: the costs of REPAIR being 1/10th of the costs to REPLACE Boxal Bridge (£35k, Cintec Ltd, which undertakes such bridge repair worldwide compared with £400k cited in the WSCC report by Parsons Brinkerhoff, 2014) and the replacement costs are not only dated but exclude the compensation payments for landowners.  Policies:: the plan does not conform with many aspects of national and local policies concerning planning, transport, environment, wildlife or heritage  Safety: that New Bridge on the A272 is much more dangerous having experienced two fatal accidents while the requirements for improving signage on the C109, Kirdford Road, have been made known since 2013 but have not been implemented. 30  Structure: that 3 independent Highways engineers agree that while the bridge does need TLC it does not require replacement. Sussex Police & Crime Commissioner Katy Bourne writes: “This year, we have seen police officers and staff nationally, along with other emergency services, respond with skill and bravery as they play their part in the substantial security effort around the recent terror attacks which have hit the UK. In response, the Government is increasing the money it spends on tackling terrorism, including an amount for policing. “Further investment is also working to tackle the national threat of cyber crime, which is affecting businesses and individuals across the country. With the new frontline for policing increasingly becoming our front rooms and children’s bedrooms – where crimes are being committed down the phone line and behind screens – we have to recognise that the policing we see is not necessarily all the policing we get to keep us safe. “I know that residents support Sussex Police in preparing for threats like terrorism and cyber crime but I’m also aware that issues closer to home, such as anti-social behaviour, are affecting local people. In previous years, the Chief Constable has asked for my help to raise more funds to invest in specific areas of policing, including public protection, community investigation and armed response. Thanks to the money you’ve already contributed through your council tax, Sussex Police has been able to build its capacity and capabilities in these areas, and others, to deliver a more effective and efficient service to the public. Now we need your help to sustain this 31 service. “All public services have to find significant financial savings and Sussex Police is no exception. Recipe of the Month THAI CRAB MAYO CROUSTADES This recipe takes minutes to make and is one of my favourites to offer guests at drinks parties! It is also one we often have before the Christmas meal as an amusebouche! Perfect with a glass of bubbles! Hands-on time 15 mins

Ingredients    

100g white crab meat (I use tinned) 1½ tsp fish sauce 2½ tbsp mayonnaise ½ - 1 red chilli, deseeded and finely chopped  Small handful fresh coriander, chopped, plus extra to garnish  15 mini croustade cases (I buy mine in Sainsburys)

Method 1. In a medium bowl, stir together the first five ingredients. Check the seasoning and 33 adjust to taste. 2. Fill each croustade case with a spoonful of the crab mixture, then garnish with extra coriander if you like. GET AHEAD: Make the crab mixture up to a day ahead but don’t add the coriander. Cover and chill. Complete recipe (i.e. add coriander!) to serve. -

We collect our passengers, usually twice a week, from their homes and take them out – mostly for shopping, but on occasion for social outings. I should very much appreciate hearing from anyone who feels they could devote two or three mornings a month as an escort. The escort is there to help see the passengers on and off the bus, to ensure that all seat belts are fastened, to lend an arm if necessary, to help with shopping bags and, if requested, to see passengers to their front door.  Start to prune your Wisteria, climbing roses, vines and fruit trees.  Leave the faded flower heads on your hydrangeas until the spring, as they will provide frost protection to the swelling buds further down the stems.  Move containers of shrubs or bedding plants to a sheltered spot; clustering them together helps protect the root systems from suffering frost damage.  Take hardwood cuttings from suitable trees and shrubs.  Lift and divide established clumps of rhubarb to renew the plant's vigour.  Remove yellowing leaves from your winter brassicas as they are no use to the plant and may harbour pests and diseases. Cover with netting to protect them from pigeons.  Dig over empty borders and pile manure on top - let the worms and frosts break up the clods of soil.  Apply glue bands or grease bands to the trunks of fruit trees to prevent wingless female winter moths climbing the trunks and laying their eggs in the branches.  Plant raspberry canes now whilst they are dormant.  Plant blueberries for an attractive addition to the fruit garden.

Wisborough Green History - JAMES Last month I described the start of James Pearce's business in south London and how he gradually developed his skills from body components to coach building and interior trimming . . . By the late 1960s Jim realised that all of his spare time was taken up with the Bentleys, an activity that was increasing all of the time and from which he found it difficult to turn away potential business. He had to make a decision, either to cut down on the renovation work or give up his full-time work that until that time fortunately hadn't been affected by the Bentley work. It was an important decision as he had many family responsibilities; in addition to being married he had children and their education to consider. He was also aware of the challenge of earning a living rather than be comfortably salaried. But, in the end, Chris said "let's do it". And so they left London and moved into the country with a determination to succeed. See the enclosed photo of Jim in one of the last cars (a 3 litre Bentley) that he rebuilt whilst still in South London in 1968. Before continuing the story of his move to West Sussex, I have included the details of a couple of mishaps from his time in south London to show 36 that it wasn't all plain sailing for the business. They illustrate just what could happen so innocently. In the first, Jim had just completed one of his first hoods on a car, spending a long time in his garage getting a perfect fit and getting the design and style just right. The car looked beautiful. He then drove the car out of his garage to show it off, not realising that he had built the car to the necessary height that was about 2" higher than the door opening. And as he drove out, the hood was ripped off. Although he could later laugh about it, it was horrific at the time. But Jim straight away rebuilt the whole hood. In the second mishap, Jim left a car running to warm up the engine before taking it out. He had just completed the car and fitted it with light blue carpets. When he went out to drive the car away he was horrified to find that oil had been pumped all over the front carpets. He switched off the engine, removed the carpets and tried to clean them but found this very difficult. He bought some petrol and a very big pan, then washed the carpets fully in the petrol to remove the oil then shampooed them and hung them out to dry. This went very well considering how stained they were. When they were dry there wasn't a trace of the oil but when Jim refitted them they were a different colour from the ones in the back of the car! Jim didn't know what to do as there was no more blue carpet left and time was getting critical, so he drained a gallon of oil from the sump and washed

S E PEARCE (SUSSEX) LTD (Cont) 5 all of the carpets in the oil. He then put them through the petrol and shampooing washes, dried them and put them all back in the car. They looked perfect when they were finished although they were a slightly different shade of blue from the original but that didn't matter as long as they were all the same colour. Reverting to their move to West Sussex, Jim and his family bought a house in 1968/69 in Nutbourne near to the Rising Sun pub. He restored a 3 litre Bentley in one of the garages of his new home although there wasn't really sufficient space in which to work. As a result, Jim looked for alternative premises locally and found a suitable workshop to rent at the Volvo garage in Clemsfold, a hamlet on the Guildford to Horsham road just north of Alfoldean. During his time there, he was joined by Wally White who had previously worked as a designer at the Ford Motor Company. Together they undertook coachwork, trimming and repairs on Bentley and Rolls Royce cars. One of Jim's clients there was an Irish lord who was a very friendly and generous man and for whom Jim completed a couple of cars. These cars were the first that he completed after setting up his new business in Clemsfold. The photo shows one of Jim's Bentleys and an admiring dog (with his owner) at the petrol pumps at the garage in 1969.

Although it was good to have space to carry out the restoration work, the workshop wasn't ideal for Jim's needs, so he wondered about finding something more suitable. Wally suggested that there were more suitable premises locally, in particular one that was an old coachworks in Wisborough Green called Butts Works that had been there since the beginning of the last century. Wally knew George Gabriel who lived in the village and he arranged for Jim to meet Jack Graveley, the owner, who was planning upon a gradual retirement from his own vehicle maintenance and repair business. The buildings were ideal for Jim's needs and as a result he took a lease on the front two buildings; these are the ones still in use today. (Continued next month) Richard B

Poachers beware as Christmas approaches Game dealers, restaurateurs, hotels and public houses are being advised to check that they are not buying illegally-killed game. The warning is being made by Sussex Police as Autumn heralds a potential seasonal 39 rise in poaching across the county, especially for deer, both shot and coursed and hares, again coursed illegally by poachers with dogs. The force's Wildlife Crime Officer PCSO Daryl Holter said: "The cosy, traditional image of a local countryman taking 'one for the pot' is far removed from the gruesome reality of modern day poaching which can be carried out on an all but commercial basis, often by gangs travelling into the countryside from towns and cities, sometimes from quite a distance. "We have worked closely with rural communities and partner agencies to tackle the problem in the county for a number of years. We are preparing for an increase in reports due to the time of year and would like to raise awareness around poaching and associated activities early on." To prevent purchasing illegal meat, people are advised not to buy from people who they do not know, report suspicious gatherings in car parks around vans or 4x4s and dealers in game should show legal documentation for the sale of meat. Daryl said; "Commercial poaching is a serious problem on various levels. It is not a faceless crime. There is a real risk to public health as meat is introduced illegally into the system and in the case of deer poaching, the animals are shot at night using high-powered weapons with an obvious risk to public safety. "There is also concern for deer not being killed in a clinical and professional manner as many are shot with weapons not suitable for the size of the animal. Those not shot cleanly can often escape into the undergrowth to die a cruel lingering and painful death. I’d also like to send a warning to poachers themselves that we are working very closely with farm and land owners and in some cases even installing CCTV to catch poachers. It will not be tolerated, and we will do all we can to support anyone that this crime affects. When we catch you, we will put you in front of a court and we have the power to seize all of the 'tools of your trade', including weapons, vehicles and even your dogs." If you suspect illegal poaching is taking place, please report online or call 101 - but if it’s happening there and then dial 999 immediately. Employment Fraud Alert The National Fraud Intelligence Bureau (NFIB) has identified a number of reports where job seekers are being targeted by fraudsters trying to obtain personal and banking details from them, or requesting money to secure accommodation. Individuals registering with job seeking websites or searching for jobs on The Student Room website are being contacted by bogus recruitment companies/businesses asking them to complete application and interview forms which request personal details and banking details, as well as copies of identity documents. In some instances the applicant is invited along for interview, either in person or over the phone, to make the process look as legitimate as possible. This is impacting on students and graduates looking for work both in the UK and overseas. Some job seekers, as well as divulging personal details, have paid money to the fraudsters in order to secure a bogus rental property alongside the job offer. How to protect yourself:  Check emails and documents from the recruiter for poor spelling and grammar – this is often a sign that fraudsters are at work.  If visa fees are mentioned, ask the embassy representing the country where you believe you will be working how to obtain a visa and how much it costs. Check that the answers the potential employer or recruiter gave you are the same – if they’re not, it may be a sign of fraud.  Carry out thorough research to confirm that the organisation offering you the job actually exists. If it does exist, contact the organisation directly using contact details obtained through your own research or their website to confirm the job offer is genuine. What to do if you’re a victim:  If you think your bank details have been compromised or if you believe you have been defrauded contact your bank immediately. (Continued on page 49)

Local Club and Society News Wisborough Green Short Mat Bowls Club We travelled to Pulborough on the 3rd November for a one mat friendly against The Reprobates. Jane, David, Bernard and Monica winning 25-16 to run out comfortable winners by nine shots. Then we travelled to Pulborough SMBC for a friendly match on Wednesday 8 th November with Wisborough winning on one mat and losing on the other two. Mat 1 (Jane, Gavin, David and Monica) losing 11-18 and Mat 2 (Evelyn, Dawn, Tony and Pauline) winning well 21-12 and Mat 3 (Jean Head, Marilyn, Pauline and Shirley) losing 12-25. This gave a match result of 44-55, a defeat by 11 shots. The Club Annual Dinner and Presentation on Saturday 11th November, was enjoyed by 44 members and friends. An excellent catered 3 course menu was followed with entertainment from folk singer Alan Gibson, then the presentation of Trophies by our President Reg Hickman and Steve Adsett representing our sponsors and finally a fabulous Raffle. On Tuesday 14th November we entertained Alfold also in a friendly match, with Wisborough winning both mats. Wisborough Green Horticultural Society Monday 4th December 8pm Talk “Sussex Apples Permaculture” Sue Flight gave us an enjoyable evening demonstrating “Candle Light Christmas” for our November talk. She, with her team, are in charge of the flowers at Gravetye Manor and during her demonstration gave us amusing insights into her work. The next talk is about apples and permaculture so do come along and enlighten yourselves! No doubt we have all started to do that end of season “sort out” of the garden and let’s hope the weather remains reasonably benign. Don’t forget the rubbish tip hours for the winter are 9am – 4pm and they are 45 CLOSED ON Thursday and Friday (Grrrhh). Below is a disturbing extract from the RHS about Climate Change: “Rainfall in the UK will become increasingly variable with much of Britain expected to be frost-free in some years. There will be noticeable differences in the frequency and intensity of heavy rainfall and prolonged drought between the north and the south of the UK. Significantly wet winter days will increase in number, and this will be most pronounced in northern areas – by the 2050s winters could be up to 40% wetter than the 1960-1990 averages. The length of dry spells will increase, especially in summer in southern areas. Summers could be 40% drier than 1961-1990. Lower rainfall coupled with higher summer temperatures will lead to significantly drier soils. Next Market: Thursday 14th December 2017 Wisborough Green Village Hall 8.45am – 12.30pm The November Market was a great hit, with 29 stalls and a record number of visitors. We welcomed back The Sweetarian, with their delicious range of peanut butters, and we saw the seasonal return of Sue Turley, Garden Cottage Products, with her selection of festive cakes and treats. The Three Crowns Inn took a stall to show speciality gin and Christmas gift ideas, and newcomer Bert’s Biscuits introduced their irresistible doggy treats to the market. Christmas Market – December 14th Lots of Christmas goodies; festive treats, meats, cheeses, breads, cakes, chocolates, cards and present ideas. Father Christmas will be with us, assisted by a very special helper, to promote our festive raffle (which will be drawn just before the market closes). And we hope the pupils from Wisborough Green Primary School will visit to entertain us with Christmas carols and songs. Why not just come along and enjoy the atmosphere with a Macmillan tea or coffee and cake? There will be something for everyone! Following an appeal at the November market we are pleased to welcome Bekkie Quinlivan to the Committee to take over responsibility for social media. Bekkie will replace Sada Ray, to whom we are deeply indebted for her dedication and professionalism in increasing our presence on all formats of social media. Sada has been a breath of fresh air, bringing new ideas and a hands-on approach to the running 47 of the market. She will be missed on the Committee, but we hope to continue seeing her at our monthly markets. In restructuring the Market Committee we now have a vacancy for a Secretary/ Administrator to join the Committee and look after market records, keep stallholder information up-to-date and take the minutes at monthly meetings. This voluntary position involves a small amount of work during the month, plus attending a Committee meeting once a month. We still need volunteers to boost our team of helpers who set up and clear away stallholder’s tables etc. in the Village Hall, and put-out and take-in the roadside signs around the area. Just an hour or so once a month, meeting other villagers, socialising and helping a village institution - that’s got to be good all round, hasn’t it? Weather Watch October was a dull and mild month with the wettest weather in the west and north of the UK as they bore the brunt of the prevailing systems from the Atlantic, plus ex-hurricane Ophelia. Capel Curig in Wales got drenched with 419mm while Essex received only 10mm. In Wisborough Green we had 51mm – last year 35mm and my 10 yr average 90mm. Highest temperature in October was 24.0°C at Manston (Kent) and the coldest temp was recorded at Tulloch Bridge minus 5.0°C. The winds from Ophelia gave the country those strange yellowy and forbidding skies -this was due to small soot particles from the Iberian forest fires. Take a look at article under the Horticultural Society (page 45) about Climate Change in the future. There must be somewhere in the Midlands that is not too dry and not too wet! If the Gulf Stream should cease (which could happen apparently) we are on the same latitude as Newfoundland! Now that’s a chilly thought...... . Weathervane

WI Report At our Annual Meeting on the 2nd November about 24 members attended and enjoyed an evening of wine, nibbles, a quiz and the annual task of voting for the President and committee for the ensuing year. Comprehensive reports were given by Mary Benson, Dottie Smith and Christine Serna of the last year and Mary Benson was again unanimously voted in as President. Ruth Isaacs was elected as Secretary and Christine Serna remains as Treasurer. Thanks go to all the above for their generous giving of time and effort and I’m sure all members are grateful that there are still people willing to stand. Our next meeting is on the 7th December which is our Christmas Party. A list of food was circulated for members to fill in and they were reminded to bring a pre-wrapped present along to the value of £3 which would be our secret Santa present instead of the usual raffle. We have a Magician coming to entertain us during the evening which is a first for us. See you there. On behalf of everyone at W.I. we wish you all a very happy Christmas. CHICHESTER CATHEDRAL FRIENDS Many people will have visited Chichester for the theatre or for shopping, but how many have visited the nine hundred-year-old Cathedral? TripAdvisor describes Chichester Cathedral as “a wonderful blend of ancient and modern, with a sense of continuity and connection between generations, going back almost a thousand years”. The Cathedral houses a wonderful collection of 20th century painting, sculpture and glass, amongst them a Marc Chagall window, tapestries by John Piper and a painting by Graham Sutherland. By contrast there are 12th century Lazarus reliefs and Lambert Barnard paintings of Bishops of Chichester over the centuries. All blend beautifully. Chichester Cathedral Friends is a charity formed to support the mission and ministry of the Cathedral. There are some 1500 people from the Diocese and beyond who support the work of the Cathedral in numerous ways. The Friends are run by volunteers and, if people have time and want to help, there are many opportunities to contribute. Time, skills and experience are all assets of which much use can be made! Over and above the daily services in the Cathedral there are concerts - the lunchtime ones free, exhibitions, talks, lectures and family activities, together with a shop and cafe in the Cloisters. In addition, the Friends like to socialise and have fun too! A full programme of events – including talks (a recent one by the new Festival Theatre Director attracted over a hundred guests), day trips, lunches, and holidays continuous throughout the year. The AGM each year has nationally known speakers: recently the composer John Rutter and this year Lord Hennessy, Professor of Modern History at London University. The Friends are a registered charity and for just £15 a year, or £25 for a couple, a whole new way of life, experiences and friendships can open up whilst supporting one of the major attractions in our lovely county of Sussex.
