Pastoral Letter Observe the Sabbath because it is holy to you. Exodus 31:14 How are the plans for your holidays going? Or should I say ‘Holy days’? The Israelites were told by God to keep the seventh day of the week as special, because God rested on the seventh day after creating the world in the previous six. They were told, commanded even, to take a break. God knows that his creation, you and me, need time to refresh and recharge our batteries. The problem is, it is so easy to keep working at projects, ideas or even dreams that rather than being our servants, they can become our masters and suck away quality time from the relationships we have with our nearest and dearest and with God himself! The Church recognises this in that it provides Holy days which were the forerunners of our now ‘holidays’. Rest and relaxation are as much a part of life as is the busyness of work, study, chores etc. I recently received a birthday card stating “Look busy, Jesus is coming …” Possibly apt for a Vicar, but I believe it is too easy to be busy for God doing Churchy stuff without really listening to what he wants from each and every one of us. So why not, if you are having a holiday this summer, or enjoying the sunshine in the garden, take time to find a good Christian book to read or buy a CD to listen to. There is so much available online or next time you are in Chichester call into St Olaves in North Street and browse the shelves. You’ll be assured of a warm welcome from Bradley and his staff. So whatever you are doing this summer, take time to listen to God’s voice and do not worry, when Jesus returns, he does not want busy Christians, but faithful ones. Clive and Marion

Prayer Chain of Prayer Worried about a loved one, a friend or yourself and would like prayers to be said by a chain of people? Contact Wendy 700295 or Gillian 700157 and they will start the chain by contacting the person next to them on the list and so it goes all the way round. A copy of the chain is on the notice board at the back of church. Prayer is a powerful and important part of life and one should never under estimate its effect. You don't need to give any details of the problem just ask for prayers to be said and it will happen. Please note that it will be treated with total confidentiality.
Prayers are offered for parishioners who are in special need, especially the sick and frail. Please advise either of the churchwardens of any persons or situations you would like remembered in this way. From the Editor Welcome to the July edition of Ad Vincula. In addition to the usual articles, this month we have reports, with pictures, of the Festival Weekend of 5 to 7 June - the School Summer Festival (p12-13) and St Peter’s Festival Weekend (p22-23). I had so many pictures that I couldn’t include them all but you will find others on the church website and I’m sure there will be others on the school website too. An exhausting weekend for all the organisers but very enjoyable for everybody. We also have an update on the Boxal Bridge petition (p15), an obituary for Judith Preston-Jones giving a wonderful insight into her and Geoffery’s interesting life together (p17), an update from Ami on the Nepal Earthquake Appeal (p17), an invitation to join the Probus Club (p19) and a half-way report from Jamie Daniell, who at the time of writing, has now reached Scotland. Finally, we have a good news story about the “Greens” football team (p19). You will have noticed, however, the sporadic nature of sports reports recently and I would love to hear news from the various Sports Clubs in the village on a regular basis and I will do my best to compile separate reports into a “Sports Page” - unless, of course, anybody would like to take on the coordination role? Please do get in touch. Best wishes, Roland Zilz This magazine can also be viewed on line at: http://www.wisboroughgreenparishchurch.org.uk/index.php/parish-magazine
Letters to the Editor Sir On behalf of the humans of Family Support Work, of which I am Chief Bear, I invite all humans of Wisborough Green to come and bring their Teddy Bears to the Xpresso coffee morning on Friday 10th July as the first part of a fund raising weekend for the Chichester Diocese charity FSW (Family Support Work). A special invitation is extended to Climbing Bears, Wizzy Tots and everyone in Wyatt House. And then, if you would like to, we will all meet up again at 10.30am on Sunday 12th July in church. FSW has worked with vulnerable families across Sussex since 1890 through many activities including home visits, support groups, one-to-one meetings, drop-ins as well as supported breaks with their community workers. Xpresso will be donating all their takings that day towards the work of FSW. Last year this event raised £390. Do you remember Pooh said “that was fantastick!” Looking forward to an exciting weekend Yours faithfully Col Bear, FSW Hear Bear, Registered Charity No: 285337 9

Nature Notes We’ve had several interesting reports recently. Many thanks to all who’ve been in touch. After a horrid journey fraught with traffic jams in late May, I got out of the car and listened to a nightingale which sent me to bed much cheered. We’ve not heard one this end of the village for years. I do hope he found a mate. The pond in Carters Field has lots of dancing damselflies - and a grass snake was also reported over there. Maybe feeding on those tadpoles. It was described as ‘brownish/not very green’ and about 3 feet long. Lovely creatures! I do like all things slithery or hoppy! Quite a few over-wintering butterflies are out and about – especially red admirals and peacocks. And down in Bramber a ‘bundle’ of them was found in St Mary’s house, tucked up near a window. Over a few days, as the weather warmed up, it gradually peeled rather like an onion, as the butterflies stirred and separated. They were gently released into the garden. Apparently there was more than one species in the same ‘bundle.’ I wish I’d seen that. Along the A272 towards Petersfield, about a mile before Cowdray golf course, on the right hand side, there’s a beautiful big field of poppies and yellow rattle And a little further on I saw about half a dozen swifts wheeling and diving. They are so acrobatic and graceful – much missed round here. A single rather forlorn Pipistrelle bat has been around for the last few years, but now there seem to be two again, which is great news. Tawny owls are calling, and there’s a new buzzard nest nearby. Will the crows let them brood this time? Fingers crossed. Out of the blue last week I had a report of a bee orchid, right in the village! I was a bit sceptical, but my informant was firm, so I went to look. First I saw an iris with very unusual colouring. Rather pompously I assumed they’d made a mistake, so I took a picture, as you see. Then I went back for another look and found the orchid! It was definitely me who was making the mistake! Couldn’t be much more different, as you can see. (Note to self – wear your glasses!) How long has it been lurking in the soil, I wonder? Will it survive and come again next year? What a treasure, as somebody realised and protected it. Hooray! Talking of plants surviving, if you are worried about wild flowers disappearing, please visit the Plantlife website - www.plantlife.org.uk and click on Road Verge Campaign 2015 They have a new petition urging all councils to consult the experts re best times for cutting road verges etc. Many wild varieties are struggling. Later cutting would really help them, and our bees and other precious pollinators too. Lastly I found this moth on the wall the other day. Anyone know what it is? Oh hang on, could it be an Iris Moth…? Sue J

Wisborough Green Primary School News Thank you to everyone who came along to our Summer Festival. We were incredibly lucky with the weather and it was a brilliant day and evening. The PTA excelled themselves this year; there were so many stalls and things for the children to do. I felt so proud to see so many children attending too; the procession was fantastic and was followed by some superb maypole and country dancing. Well done to Rita, our May Queen, who opened the Festival so sweetly. Well done also to her entourage; Green Man (Jesse – Y5), Jack Frost (Jack – Y4), Chimney Sweep (George – Y3) and Crown Bearer (Lily – Y2), who all did a great job in leading the procession. Thank you also to Mr Foden who drove the car! I think the highlight for me was the ‘flashmob’ dance that the whole school participated in, which was planned and choreographed by the children; it really captured everyone’s attention! I do hope you all enjoyed it as much as we did. This is the school’s main fund-raiser and every penny raised goes towards so many extra things we simply couldn’t fund from our school budget. I must thank all of the children and parents who helped to make the day so special and of course my amazing staff who came along to support the event. Now that we are over half way through the Summer Term, we are in the process of preparing the children’s end of year reports. This year is slightly different as we are working with a new National Curriculum and assessment system. We have worked very hard to ensure that our curriculum remains rigorous but also provides the best learning opportunities for every child in the school. I am in the process of writing an individual comment on each of the 178 children’s reports! I must add that I have really enjoyed being able to do this during my five years at Wisborough Green. It is wonderful to know each child so well here and it’s always a struggle to fit everything in the box! Learning Journeys are well underway with exciting visits planned for the Summer Term. Years 5 and 6 have already visited Ford Recycling Centre this term. This was an excellent experience for both children and staff and has informed their latest topic about the environment. Reception, Years 1 and 2 are off to the seaside later this term to further their studies of the beach environment. Years 3 and 4 will be off to experience a Rainforest environment towards the end of term, this is proving quite tricky as you can imagine! The children in KS2 now have their parts and lines to learn for the summer term production of ‘Jungle Book.’ As with everything we do at Wisborough Green, we are planning this in a slightly different way this year and we are sure the audience will love it! Enjoy the sunshine! 12
Warm regards Mrs Trudy Emberson, Headteacher
WG Primary School Summer Festival Cheers and tears swamped the village green at the inaugural Wisborough Green Primary School Summer Festival on Saturday 6th June when a surprise flashmob took to the central arena. In the middle of the festival, all of the school’s pupils suddenly stopped what they were doing when they heard the first bars of Uptown Funk on the loudspeaker. They ran to the centre and danced and sang together – the younger ones being choreographed by the older ones. The children – unbeknown to their parents - had been practising for weeks and there was barely a dry eye in the crowd. Early indications are that the festival, which raises money for the books and equipment for the children, will have filled the school’s coffers to the tune of about £5,400. The festival was opened by the school’s May Queen, accompanied by her entourage of the Green Man, a Chimney Sweep and Crown Bearer, and followed by a procession of all the children in the school. The May Queen was driven in a 1929 Lea Francis from the school to the village green. The day began with a display of Maypole dancing, to traditional and modern music, and game parents joined in with the final dance… much to the amusement of onlookers as paths (and ribbons) were well and truly crossed. Following a school country dancing display, the school Rock Choir took to the stage and gave attendees a sneak preview of their performance at the Weald Music Festival at the Hawth later this month. In the flaming June sunshine, two local bands took to the stage as parents and children chilled out on picnic blankets and chairs. Brighton band “The Blues Issue” was the first to be cheered before Wisborough Green’s own “Rock Docteurs” gave a rollicking finale performance. With dozens of stalls – including a cardboard arcade made and manned by the children in Year 5, a display of vintage cars, a visit from the local fire brigade, an hilarious tug of war battle, giant inflatables and great refreshments, the event was a huge success – a fitting farewell to outgoing headmistress Mrs Trudy Emberson, who leaves the school at the end of term. Vanda Miller, PTA Secretary

Wey & Arun Canal Trust PODDLE BRINGS IN MORE THAN £8,000 Sponsored walkers have boosted a canal restoration fund by more than £8,000. On a sunny, but not-too-hot, day with a cooling breeze, 142 people strolled across the South Downs to raise the money for the Wey & Arun Canal Trust. Proceeds from the walk on Sunday, June 7th – the Trust’s annual “Poddle” – have now been added up and total £6,750. With the Trust being able to claim Gift Aid on most of the proceeds, this will raise over £8,000. The money will go to restoration projects along the length of the canal, which runs 23 miles from Pallingham in West Sussex to Shalford in Surrey. This year, the Poddle started and finished at St Michael’s Church Hall in Amberley, following a 12½-mile route across the South Downs National Park. Walk organiser Margaret Darvill said: “We are most grateful to all the people of several generations who found sponsors and walked on the Poddle. Thanks also to the volunteers who helped stage the walk, from those who made all the arrangements and marked out the route to the people who provided refreshments and acted as marshals.”

KKWG Update - Boxal Bridge THANK YOU. Thank you to all of you who signed the petition to West Sussex County Council expressing support for Boxal Bridge. Numbers were well in excess of the 3,000 signatures required (even though some 500 were disallowed for various reasons) to trigger a range of responses. This is surely a sign of local interest in and support for the bridge but also a reflection of the amazing amount of work done by members of KKWG ably led by Katy Fletcher who started the petition. WSCC are intending to send divers into the brook to examine the bridge beneath the water and further discussions will then be planned. Dr Jill Sutcliffe, Chair KKWG, 01403 700395 15

Judith Hamilton Preston-Jones 1935 - 2015 Judith was a doctor's daughter from Tunbridge Wells. She trained as an orthoptist at Moorfields Eye Hospital, London, and worked in Coventry before marrying Geoffrey, an army officer with the Royal Engineers, in 1956. A few years later her new army life which started quietly in the Cotswolds changed for good as she was whisked off to India with her two little daughters, Anna and Louise. The culture shock didn't end there as subsequent overseas tours to Jamaica and Singapore followed. Mark was born in Jamaica and Christopher at home in Hereford before the whole family went to Singapore in 1967. Geoffrey has always greatly valued the huge support and loyalty Judith gave him while they travelled and throughout the endless disruptive moves of his army life. In 1975 a more settled period followed as Geoffrey was working in London and the family could finally live in their own house in Paddock Wood. Judith was able to return to orthoptics and worked part-time at the William Harvey Hospital in Kent. She also worked as a volunteer for the National Trust both at Scotney Castle, Kent, and at a later date, Chedworth Roman Villa in Gloucestershire. The final move to Wisborough Green in 1999 was announced as the last! With all four children married and an ever increasing number of grandchildren, Judith loved Wisborough Green. She took great pleasure in helping at the school, listening to the children read. She knew all the village children's names and watched them grow and always regaled her own family with their progress and activities. She was a school governor from 2002 - 2007. Judith greatly valued her own friends in the village especially those she met in the afternoon WI whom she continued to meet once a month for pub lunches. The church was also important, she had a great faith and love of God and she really cared about what was happening in the church. Judith’s love of her family, great love of cats, particularly Siamese, sense of humour and personality will make her sadly missed by her husband, Geoffrey, her four children, their spouses and eleven grandchildren. Geoffrey Preston- Jones would like to thank everyone for their kind cards and letters of sympathy over the sad death of his wife, Judith, on 5th May 2015 and regrets he is unable to reply to them all individually.

JAMIE’S HALF TERM REPORT Dear All I am writing this in Hawes on the Pennine Way on 4th June as I have reached the half way stage of my journey from Land’s End to John O’Groats – about 550 miles along the route. How has it been so far? Physical – No blisters or major aches or pains. My left knee complains on occasion but has not gone on strike yet! Weather – Only a few wet moments and one notably terrible day’s weather with my sister. Companionship – I’ve had the perfect mix of time on my own for reflection and focus together with time with 25 family and friends joining me at stages along the way. I have also met a wide variety of warm and lovely people. Points of Interest – The most wonderful countryside and scenery coupled with the different accents that take place gradually but significantly as you move on. The generosity of spirit remains constant but its delivery in different dialects is a fascination. Fundraising – Thanks to the donations of so many people both known and unknown to me a total of £9,284 has been raised at this halfway stage for Motor Neurone Disease and Wisborough Green church. A massive thank you to all of you who have contributed so far – it has given me a tremendous boost. Donations can still be made on JustGiving.com or given to Annie (01403 752846) The Second Half – I’m heading past Hadrian’s Wall into the Cheviots and Southern Uplands to Jedburgh, Peebles and up to Drymen for the West Highland Way to Fort William, the Great Glen Way to Inverness and then up the middle of Scotland to John O’Groats. Eureka! Just a reminder that I am doing a daily photographic report with commentary on INSTAGRAM – Jamielejog for anybody interested. (See church website for link) Thank you for all your support so far and I am keeping my fingers crossed that the second half will be as enjoyable and as achievable as the first half. Very best wishes to you all and God Bless Jamie (By the time you read this hopefully Jamie will be approaching Fort William with an anticipated end date of 23rd July) 21
St Peter’s FEST FLOWER FESTIVAL 2015 From the ethereal beauty of a bridal arrangement, to the pastel shades of flowers dancing round a beribboned maypole, to the vibrant hues of "Colours of Day", the Flower Festival delivered the promised explosion of colour. The arrangers interpreted the theme of "Hymns of Glory" with skill and imagination and we received many encouraging compliments. When the flowers were unpacked from the wholesaler and put into buckets you could have been at the Nice flower market such was the range of blooms from the exotic and tropical to the simple flowers of an English meadow. However the church was soon transformed and we hope that the many visitors and friends who came to see our finished efforts enjoyed their visit.
Thank you to all who contributed time and energy and creative talent. Maggie Edwards
OPEN GARDENS 2015 The annual Open Gardens weekend was blessed with glorious sunshine this year. Eleven keen and extremely talented gardeners opened their gates for people to see their beautiful lawns, borders and vegetables. With the Flower Festival in the church too there was plenty for everyone to feast their eyes on.

TIVAL WEEKEND MUSIC FESTIVAL 2015 On Friday night Malcolm Brinson, our resident organist and choirmaster, treated us to a wonderfully varied organ recital which showed his talents off to a treat. We were able to watch his performance on a screen at the front of the church as the nave was filled with the rousing pieces of music. On Saturday night we had a concert of two halves. In the first we were entertained by
local talent including the joyful Glee Singers, under the leadership of Victoria Smallwood and solos from Alice Warwick. Then followed some poetry, read by Richard Vause and Doris Smallwood, and music from WW1 sung by the church choir, finishing with audience participation in choruses such as ‘pack up your troubles in your old kit bag’, the whole given against a back drop of video clips from WW1 scenes. In the second half the young and very gifted Ferio Saxophone Quartet amazed and delighted everyone with their wide ranging and uplifting repertoire. At times it felt as
though a whole orchestra were there such was the varied sound from their four saxophones. At the end, after a standing ovation, they talked to the audience before returning to London. On Sunday evening, in the sun filled church, a short songs of praise took place. The congregation sang some of the hymns depicted by the beautiful flowers arrangements and learned a little about the origins of each very different hymn. This brought to a close a successful and enjoyable weekend. The Festival Weekend made a wonderful profit in excess of £2,800. A huge Thank You to everyone who helped make this such a successful event. St Peter’s LINKS Committee 23

I am looking for a few more voices to complete the chorus for Ruth. The story-line follows very closely the Book of Ruth in the Authorised Version of the Bible and is in oratorio format. There will be three performances on 29th, 30th and 31st October in the church of St Peter ad Vincula in Wisborough Green. The chorus will sing with scores which will be provided. There will be a briefing for everyone involved on Thursday 6th August and rehearsals will take place on Thursdays at 7.45 from 13th August. The production is in association with the church’s fundraiser group St Peter’s Links. Profits will be donated to their cause. Performers will be asked to make a donation of £10 (equal to the ticket price), to cover the cost of printing the scores. We aim to have fun learning and performing Ruth. Recipe of the Month Five Spice Mango Chicken This is perfect to serve cold for a buffet or when cooking for a crowd as it is light and fresh and there is not a drop of mayonnaise in sight. It can be made the day ahead and kept in the fridge, which gives time for the flavours to really infuse the chicken. Ingredients 750g / 1 1/2lb fresh cooked chicken without bone Salt and black pepper Mango Sauce 2 large ripe mangoes, peeled 8 mild pepperdew peppers from a jar (these are available from any supermarket) 1 200ml carton Greek yogurt 1 tbsp Chinese five-spice powder Juice of one lemon A few drops of Tabasco sauce Garnish Fresh salad leaves 2 pepperdew peppers finely sliced Lots of fresh parsley Method 1. Cut the flesh of one mango roughly into pieces and put into a food processor. Add the rest of the ingredients and whiz until smooth. Season with salt and pepper. 2. Cut the chicken into neat pieces and mix with the mango sauce in a mixing bowl. Cut the flesh of the remaining mango into small pieces and add to the chicken mixture. Taste and check seasoning. 3. Spoon the chicken mixture into a dish and decorate with salad leaves and sprinkle with pepperdew slices and parsley. Helen V
Sponsorship Request It would be good to see more concerts by outside professional groups at St Peter’s: be they singers, woodwind players, strings or, as we had on June 6, a saxophone quartet. The problem is that these events cost money to stage for which the church does not have the ready finances. Sponsors are required for such events. If you, or anybody you know, are able to sponsor an event I would love to hear from you. Unfortunately we are not talking peanuts here but anything from £500 to £1500 may be required. We are probably talking a maximum of 2 concerts a year. If you would like to talk more about this please telephone me on 01730 816101 Regards, Malcolm Malcolm Brinson, Director of Music at St Peter Ad Vincula. 27

Wisborough Green History - WW2 The V1 unmanned aircraft were employed by Germany from the middle of 1944. They were launched with a limited fuel supply that resulted in the aircraft crashing when the fuel ran out. The aircraft was really a rocket powered bomb; this resulted in an enormous explosion with often considerable loss of life. The main target was London but much of the south-east suffered too. The illustration below is reproduced courtesy of Wikiwand. The first one to explode in Wisborough was witnessed by Bill Puttick and Reg Cheeseman. Bill was the Leading Fireman for the village and he was on duty one night with his three firemen in June 1944 in the fireman's hut in School Road. They heard a blast and saw the glare of an explosion to the north. They hadn't heard anything go overhead so when they telephoned Petworth HQ for permission to investigate, it was regarded as a hoax call. Eventually they drove to the scene of the fire towing the fire pump and in the early morning light found a crater in the field behind Naldretts Farm bungalow where the owner was rushing about in his pyjamas. One cow had been killed and the others had been knocked out by the blast. Also, the leaves had been blown off all of the trees. The blast was later confirmed as being that from a V1 whose engine would have cut out shortly before and so could not have been heard in the village as it glided to the ground. When the staff of Forrest Stores (now Forrest Place) arrived for work in the morning, they found that the shock wave from the blast had shattered the plate glass window on each side of the central door. The first thing villagers noticed was the staff sweeping up the glass and, shortly after, the windows being boarded up. Interestingly, on an earlier occasion and to further illustrate the power of a bomb blast, Lil Elliot and her family heard a German plane in trouble with a misfiring engine and so they hid under a table. It flew over the village and jettisoned its bomb load in a field on the south eastern side of Fox Hill. The crater is still there but as a pond surrounded by trees. This caused such a shock wave that the greenhouse at Eric Clarke's parents' bungalow Isledene in Kirdford Road (3他 miles away) was blown off its base by about a foot but without breaking the glass! The public became aware of the new threat that only started after conventional bombing had almost ceased. The V1s became commonplace with nearly 10,000 being fired and they acquired the nickname of "Doodlebugs." Those who heard one fly over knew they were safe, but its victims had no warning at all as the engine cut out several miles before it crashed. Several villagers who were children at the time heard and saw them pass over but this didn't stop them being terrified and then hiding in ditches, etc. In addition to the aircraft that attacked our area, there were several that crashed. 30
2 AERIAL ATTACKS 3 (Concluded) These were both Luftwaffe and RAF aircraft and although none was recorded as actually crashing in the parish, several were seen in trouble shortly beforehand. These events went from July 1940 to early 1944 and for the civilian population it was both scary and exciting with noise from bombardments across the Channel and aerial combat overhead. When fights were going on, it became quite dangerous with machine gun bullets and bits of aircraft falling all over the place so it was as well to get under cover. Sometimes when a plane came down, pieces could be scattered over the fields and able to be picked up. However, people were prohibited from collecting souvenirs of the crashes in case anti-personnel bombs could be collected by children. Certainly anything like maps or log books had to be given to the police. Nevertheless, people still collected pieces of fuselage or wing aluminium and quite possibly some of these pieces still exist. Denzil Peacock recalled that on 16th August 1940 at the height of the Battle of Britain, and when he was six years old, his father came in from their butchers shop saying that a German bomber had crashed at Balls Cross. He said that he was going to drive there in the van to find out where it had come down and Den couldn't believe it when he said he would take him along with him. He remembered driving down a lane to Upper Frithfold Farm and walking across to a large crater in a field. He was disappointed as he could not see a German aeroplane anywhere only a large hole and a few pieces of aluminium scattered around. Apparently the aircraft blew up on hitting the ground. At the bottom of the crater they could see some sacking. Somebody climbed down to investigate this and when they came back they said there were pieces of bodies underneath. The aircraft had been a Heinkel 111. His souvenir from this experience was a piece of aluminium strut which he did not dare take to school to show off his find as it would be confiscated by Mr Cooper, the headmaster. On another occasion and in the same month, Dick Carter was at home at Sweephurst Farm when he suddenly heard a Messerschmitt 109 single-engined fighter flying low over his house flying southwards with a screaming sound. The aircraft crashed seconds later near the Toat Monument and shortly afterwards the pilot was found dead and badly burnt in the wreckage. Diana Howarth who used to farm at Ingrams Farm recalled that one day she was farming with her mother in a field when there was a dog fight between British and German aircraft directly overhead and they had to hide in a ditch for safety from bullets and possible wreckage falling to the ground. Ian Champion remembers seeing a dog fight just to the west of the village centre. This may have been the skirmish in which a German pilot landed in woods near Loxwood and who was found a week later dead and badly burnt hanging from the branches and still in his parachute harness. Loxwood was also the site of another crash, this time by a Spitfire that had been in a dog fight came down on the east side of the main road near North Hall. The pilot's fate is unknown to me. I am grateful to the people who've allowed me to record their memories of this significant period of village history. I'd be pleased to hear from anyone else (on 01403 700140) who has memories of the time. Richard B. 31

Neighbourhood Watch - Crime News & Advice Chichester Police Station Open Day 2015 Another event is being held again this year on Saturday 11 July from 10am – 3pm. Officers from different police units will be there as well as other emergency services, classic police cars and lots of competitions with great prizes to be won. We are proudly supporting St Wilfrid’s Hospice this year with all monies raised going straight to the charity. Special Constable Recruitment We are looking to recruit special constables across Sussex but particularly in the Midhurst and Petworth areas. Special constables are volunteer police officers who spend a minimum of 16 hours a month working with their local community. Specials in Sussex specialise in a number of roles ranging from neighbourhood response, neighbourhood policing and working alongside the roads policing unit. If you are interested in joining then please go to this website: http://www.sussex.police.uk/policing-in-sussex/work-with-us/special-constables “Immobilise” Operation Magpie is our shared ambition to make Sussex a 'no go' area for burglars. When our officers respond to reports of burglary, they often cannot get enough detailed information about the items which have been stolen. Without old boxes for electrical items or photographs of jewellery, it can be very difficult to accurately identify what has been taken. https://www.immobilise.com/ is a free website where you can register the details of your property. The site isn't just for mobiles and electrical items with serial numbers; you can register absolutely anything using a photo and description. It is totally secure and is recommended by police forces around the UK. Police officers access the system when they deal with lost property or items which are believed to have been stolen. If property is registered on the site then we can identify who the lawful owner is. 25 million people use immobilise and, every week through the site, hundreds of people are reunited with their lost or stolen property. Please help us to promote Operation Magpie and tackle burglary in Sussex by taking a few minutes to register your property on Immobilise today. Shed Security In June, there was a break in to a shed at the allotments and a Petrol Rotary Horticultural Digger & some tools from another shed were stolen. If you have an allotment please consider removing anything of value from your sheds. Also, watch out for your garden sheds & put secure locks on. Regards, Priscilla Pinkham If you have information about any crime call 101, email 101@sussex.pnn.police.uk or call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. Wisborough Green Short Mat Bowls Club Bowls has its very own language which can totally mystify anyone who hasn't had the pleasure of throwing a bowl in fun or earnest, here are a few terms translated into standard English.
"Good weight!" = lousy line "Good line" = lousy weight "Good back bowl" = you were lucky that didn't go in the ditch "That could make it difficult for them" = that's in my way "That could be useful" = that bowl is closer to you than the jack

Market News Beautiful morning outside at last in June. So many visitors - from Climbing Bears (pre school group) to visitors from afar. A group of pupils from the Village School came as part of an enterprise assignment. They had produced items using recycled materials e.g. bird feeder and were doing a full-some survey with regard to marketing their products. People connected to the School will be aware of Nicki from “Issy Loves Books”. She is planning to develop reading sessions at the Market for pre school children. Date to be announced. We are delighted to have Sarah (and Poppy) at the Market. Detailed information on any of the spices and herbs there. In small packages, from very reputable sources, very accessible pricing so one can buy little and often and so they are really fresh and aromatic. Wisborough Green Horticultural Society A breathing space at last. The June Show is complete when you read this but at the time of writing it has not even happened! The August Show is nearly in two months time, so no pressure then! But we all know it takes time and care for plants to develop to their fullness, so active gardening needs to be done. Another garden visit is planned, but not till August as it is to the Prairie Garden with its grasses and flowers. Happy gardening Aija Hamilton

Dead-head annuals and perennials to avoid self-seeding and to encourage prolonged flowering. Take cuttings from your favourite tender plants for over-wintering indoors. Cuttings can also still be taken from shrubs and herbaceous perennials. Keep an eye out for pests on plants, early treatment is best. Pinch out tomato side shoots each week. Cut off any leaves growing below the lowest ripening fruit trusses to improve air circulation and prevent diseases. Feed weekly with dilute tomato fertiliser. Start harvesting garlic and overwintered onions, freeing up ground for other crops. I’ll be planting my late flowering Dahlias in these beds. Harvest marrows and courgettes regularly to encourage a continued supply. Watch for blackfly on your broad beans, pinching out affected growing tips. Spray tomato plants and potato foliage with Bordeaux mixture to prevent blight. Take a look at www.blightwatch.co.uk where you can register for blight warnings in your area. Use untreated grass clippings as a mulch around most vegetables plants to suppress weed growth. They will eventually rot in and help feed your crops. Peg down runners on your strawberry plants to provide more plants for next year. If you don't need extra plants simply remove the strawberry runners completely. Prune your plum, apricot, peach and cherry trees now. Pruning these species in the summer reduces the risk of these trees getting silver leaf disease.
Check the leaves of gooseberry bushes for sawfly larvae, which can completely strip the foliage in a matter of days. Jet them off with water or pick them off by hand.

WI Report A group of 19 members, partners and loved ones met at Arundel Museum on 4th June where they were met by two guides who then
took us, in two groups, around Arundel learning about some of its history and events. It was a glorious evening weather-wise which made the evening all the more pleasant. Later that week four members went on a ‘taster’ weekend to Denman College. About 5 courses were run for the West Sussex contingent and we were ferried to Denman by coach from Chichester. We had a lovely weekend, again complimented by lovely weather, exhausting but a great experience. The WI is, again, catering for the Canadian Veterans after their Dieppe Church Service on Sunday 2nd August. Don’t forget! Our next meeting is on 2nd July when we are going to be treated to a talk by Fred Delius on Confessions of a Sword Swallower. You’ve just got to come to this one as I couldn’t have made it up!! Weather Watch Wisborough Green Rainfall for May was 59mm (last year 77mm – 7 yr average is 53mm). Wettest place in the UK, with 159mm for May, was at Lake Vrynwy (Powys) the driest was London with 40mm. At time of writing (June 13th) the thunderstorm we had yesterday evening brought 17mm of rain – no watering for some days! Highest temp for the UK in May was 22.7°C at St James Park, London. The lowest temperature was minus 5.7°C at Tulloch Bridge, Inverness-shire. Well into June we were still having very low overnight temperatures but fortunately no actual frost. After the very sunny April, May was a bit duller than the 1981-2010 mean – 92% of the norm. Weathervane
CYBER TIPS Are you secure? My mobile phone is a classic Nokia; I don’t know it’s type number and the only person who knows my mobile number is Hilary, my wife. Oh I forgot! Those who try to make me think I have won lots of money or have had a motoring accident also know the number although I have never told them! My phone makes and receives calls, and that is about all. I use it very little although it is helpful if we get separated when shopping in Chichester. I have never logged into the internet – actually I am not sure whether I could. For her birthday this year, I bought Hilary an iPhone. I know now that what I have always said is true: that if I had one I would never leave it alone. I have recently become concerned about security on these instruments. We spend time and money securing our computers, but what about security on iPhones, tablets and other similar devices? My home computer WiFi links are as secure as I can make them (I hope), but when you are away from your home or work secure environment, and logged into a free WiFi you know nothing about, what then? There is a lot on the internet about steps you can take to make your phone “secure”, but different websites give different advice! Your ideas on a postcard please! Peter Edmonds
