Pastoral Letter “You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God” Matthew 16:16 This statement by Peter, one of Jesus’ disciples, to the question that Jesus posed them was in response to a situation when everyone knows the answer, but is either too polite, or rather daunted to state the obvious. Here we see the chosen friends of Jesus who had seen and heard amazing things since being with Him. Simon Peter was about to get a new name “Now I say to you that you are Peter (which means ‘rock’) and upon this rock I will build my Church, and all the powers of hell will not conquer it.” (Matthew 16:18 NLT). Jesus was not choosing a ‘Superhero’ from a Marvel comic book to take control of the fledgling Christian believers, but a fallible, composite character ,who had issues and problems just like all of us today. Many books have been written about St. Peter, his faults and failings but also on his capacity to allow God to work in his life, to transform him by the power of the Holy Spirit, to be the person Jesus called him to be. For example who would choose a CEO (Chief Executive Officer) who would deny the boss, abuse Him in public and undermine everything that was ever said about Him. Peter did, and what’s more, Jesus took him back and restored him to his previous position. Peter’s failure did not define him, neither should ours; in the words of another great leader of the Church, “For we have all sinned and fall short of the glory of 5 God.” (Romans 3:23 ESV). St. Paul, before his conversion on the road to Damascus (Acts Chapter 9), persecuted the Christian believers. Yet, he later understood the significance of the failure of humanity to see the majesty and power of God, and dedicated his life to proclaiming the good news of the Gospel. Jesus takes us as we are and transforms us into His Body, the Church, to carry on the work that Peter and the disciples began on the day of Pentecost. We shall give thanks that Jesus called this fisherman Peter to be His special friend on our Patronal Festival, Sunday 2nd July at our 10.30am service. This will be followed by a lunch in the Vicarage Garden from 1pm (please sign up on the list at the back of Church, or ring 700339, if you would like to join us).

Regular Church Activities PRAYER GROUP AND QUIET MORNINGS If anyone would like to spend half an hour in fellowship and prayer then they are most welcome on a Tuesday at 4.30pm, when prayers are said for the life of the Parish. Prayer Chain of Prayer Worried about a loved one, a friend or yourself and would like prayers to be said by a chain of people? Contact Wendy 700295 or Gillian 700157 and they will start the chain by contacting the person next to them on the list and so it goes all the way round. A copy of the chain is on the notice board at the back of church. Prayer is a powerful and important part of life and one should never under estimate its effect. You don't need to give any details of the problem just ask for prayers to be said and it will happen. Please note that it will be treated with total confidentiality.
Prayers are offered for parishioners who are in special need, especially the sick and frail. Please advise either of the churchwardens of any persons or situations you would like remembered in this way. All those living in particular roads are prayed for regularly, the whole parish being covered over a 12-week cycle: Week beginning:

From the Editor A warm welcome to the July 2017 edition of Ad Vincula. You’ll find lots of ideas for keeping the kids occupied during the long Summer Holidays in this month’s edition. I would love to receive your photos that you think might be suitable for the front cover of the magazine but, to avoid disappointment, please remember that, in order for the printers to do justice to your photos, they must be high resolution (minimum 300DPI), the main subject area needs to be sharply in focus and ideally in “portrait” format. This usually means using an SLR or similar camera. Most people these days seem to use their mobile phones to take pictures (myself included) but most mobile phones do not have a camera that meets this specification. If you think your photo worthy of sharing, please send it to editor@stpeterswg.org.uk and, if the editorial committee think it suitable for a cover, I will do my best to make it suitable for printing. Wisborough Green Primary School News Fun, fitness and freedom to explore, are three words I would use to describe our term. Everyone is learning to love exercising every day and we really are getting fitter. The morning 1km walk/run is making a huge difference, as the children are alert and ready to learn from the minute they walk through the door. Even the toddlers have started to join in and it is a good opportunity for the parents to catch up too. We crossed the English Channel 26 times in one day and will attempt to collectively cross the Atlantic Ocean before the end of term! A normal week includes: swimming, athletics, dancing, gardening, walking, running, skipping, cycling and we even joined Joe Wickes for his 15 minute workout! To make sure we get some downtime, we have introduced meditation and love spending time relaxing. During our sleep week, everyone tried to switch off their screens and do something different- like playing with Lego, colouring and reading instead. The children monitored their diets to make sure they were making healthy choices throughout the day. Our School Council made the decision to stop sweets in school! The children all agreed it would be a good idea to celebrate their birthdays by wearing their home clothes. We all get an opportunity to wish each other a happy birthday now as it is easy to spot who is celebrating! Winning seems to be something we are good at this term and it is not just sporting events. We won the locality swimming gala and friendly netball and football matches against local schools in our sporting events. We also won the peace poster competition 11 that is run by the Billingshurst Lions. Henry beat all other entries, taking the South East title and winning the school ÂŁ100. We also have a winner in a national competition, run to design a badge to support walking to school. The design was one of eleven chosen from across the country. We are super proud of all our competitors - well done! As the end of term approaches we look forward to Sports Day, District Sports, the swimming gala, the production, cooking and eating, thank you celebrations and sharing our fantastic learning with the school community. It really has been a successful year again at Wisborough Green Primary School! All the staff, parents, governors and the local community work so hard to give the children such amazing learning opportunities. Nature Notes The other day I stopped my car while a blackbird hopped across the lane with a large lump of grass cuttings in his beak. Off to do nest repairs before raising a second brood? I think so. And I’m pretty sure our robins are starting again too. Our feeders are now covered in blue tit and great tit babies. I’ve put up a second pole with seeds and nuts as they are really making up for lost time! I know I’m repeating myself, but watching them nearby is a special pleasure, especially as they soon learn to fly straight off when people appear – and quite right too! And as I was hanging out the washing today a group of swallows appeared – about a dozen of them, some obviously immature with much shorter tails. Calling loudly to each other, they darted to and fro, quite close over my head. What a treat! A couple of days earlier we’d seen several high up, so probably these are newly fledged youngsters. With horses back at the farm behind us, the stables are in use again and the muck heap is building nicely. The swallows have obviously moved back in and there are also large numbers down at Brinsbury College stables too. Such good news!

Also in the fields behind us, we’ve seen good numbers of butterflies, considerably more than last year. They’re mainly meadow browns, but spotted woods are about too, red admirals and a few peacocks, but I’ve not seen a tortoiseshell yet. The deer are still in the woods, but very shy. Maybe there’s a fawn down the back somewhere? Other news - two rescued hedgehogs have been rehomed up at Glasshouses – hooray! (Fingers crossed the badgers leave them alone). The bee hives are doing well there too, and twayblade orchids are due to flower before long. A ruby-tailed wasp has turned up in a Southwater garden. They are rare, and wonderfully colourful. No photo, sorry, but it’s well worth looking them up on www.buglife.org.uk A little tale from a friend down near Chichester. To keep slugs off their runner beans, they put out some small jars with beer in, fruit beer she said. Next morning they went out to find all the beer gone, and some of the jars! Those were later found at an allotment where the local fox has a den – so perhaps he/she took them home hoping they might fill up again on their own. Parent and cubs slept well that night, I think! Lastly, if anyone saw a car parked on Glebe Way about midnight recently, with a shadowy figure lurking nearby, I can allay their suspicions. It was me, clutching my phone, recording the nightingale that was singing its heart out right beside the A272. He ignored the odd car rattling by and went through his repertoire, occasionally echoed by another male somewhere towards Harsfold. I now have seven minutes of glorious song stored on my phone, if I ever need cheering up! Sue J
Neighbourhood Watch - Crime News & Advice Vehicle Online Shopping Fraud Fraudsters have been advertising vehicles and machinery for sale on various selling platforms online. The victims, after communicating via email with the fraudster, will receive a bogus email which purports to be from an established escrow provider (a third party who will keep the payment until the buying and selling parties are both happy with the deal). These emails are designed to persuade victims to pay upfront, via bank transfer, before visiting the seller to collect the goods. The emails also claim that the buyer (victim) has a cooling off period to reclaim the payment if they change their mind. This gives victims the false sense of security that their money is being looked after by this trustworthy third party, when in fact it is not and the money has gone straight to the fraudster.
Protect yourself: When making a large purchase such as a new car or machinery, always meet the seller face to face first and ask to see the goods before transferring any money.
If you receive a suspicious email asking for payment, check for spelling, grammar, or any other errors, and check who sent the email. If in doubt, check feedback online by searching the associated phone numbers or email addresses of the seller.
Contact the third party the fraudsters are purporting to be using to make the transaction. They should be able to confirm whether the email you have received is legitimate or not.
False adverts often offer vehicles or machinery for sale well below market value to entice 14
potential victims; always be cautious. If it looks too good to be true then it probably is.
Wedding Services Fraud With the “Wedding Season” in full flow, and for those individuals who are considering making plans for next year and beyond, you should be aware of the potential risks of fraud involved. According to ‘bridesmagazine.co.uk’, in 2017 the average wedding cost spend is approximately £30,111. This will be paid out to multiple vendors, including; photographers, caterers, reception venues and travel companies, to name a few. Many of these services will require booking at least several months in advance and you may be obliged to pay a deposit or even the full balance at the time. Being aware of the potential risks and following the below prevention advice could minimise the likelihood of fraud: Paying by Credit Card will provide you with protection under Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act, for purchases above £100 and below £30,000. This means that even if a Company goes into liquidation before your big day, you could claim a refund through your Credit Card Company. Social Media - Some Companies run their businesses entirely via social media sites, offering low cost services. Whilst many are genuine, some may not be insured or may even be fraudulent. There are a few things you can do to protect yourself; Ensure you obtain a physical address and contact details for the vendor and verify this information. Should you experience any problems, you will then be able to make a complaint to Trading Standards or consider pursuing via the Small Claims Court.
Ensure you obtain a contract before paying money for services. Make certain you fully read and understand what you are signing and note the terms of cancellation.
Neighbourhood Watch (Cont) Consider purchasing Wedding Insurance - Policies vary in cover and can be purchased up to two years in advance. They can protect you from events that would not be covered under the Consumer Credit Act. Complete research on each vendor, ensuring you are dealing with a bona fide person or company. Explore the internet for reviews and ratings and ask the vendor to provide details of past clients you can speak to. You should do this even if using companies recommended by a trustworthy friend or source. For services such as wedding photographers, beware of websites using fake images. Look for inconsistencies in style; Meet the photographer in person and ask to view sample albums. If you like an image from a wedding, ask to view the photographs taken of the whole event so you can see the overall quality. Remember, if something appears too good to be true, it probably is! If you have been affected by these, or any other type of fraud, report it to Action Fraud by visiting www.actionfraud.police.uk, or by calling 0300 123 2040.

STOP PRESS - A HAPPY AND GLORIOUS WISBOROUGH GREEN FESTIVAL! 17 June 2017 - what a day for the Wisborough Green Primary School Festival – it could not have been more glorious, and there was plenty of fun for all.
The traditional maypole dance kicked off proceedings with a modern twist, the children of the Rock Choir sung their hearts out, and our Hobby Horse of the Year Show brought a smile to everyone’s face! Village Hall News Existing
Proposed
I am pleased to say that the Project Team has completed its discussions with the architect and has agreed a set of drawings that will be submitted for planning consent. We have taken on board some further feedback from the community and made some small changes to the internal layout. Also, in response to requests from the Planning & Heritage team at Chichester DC, we have accommodated some cosmetic changes to the external profile of the building – height and location of some windows and improvements to the look of the small flat roof above the storage area. Our architect will now be working on a Design & Access Statement and a Heritage Statement which are both required to support our application. The Project Team will also be commissioning a Bat survey of the hall to ensure that these protected species do not pose any impediment to our progress. We are due to meet again in early July for a final run through of our planning application submission. I shall report further progress in due course. The Parishes Wildlife Group Dragonfly survey Thanks to kind permissions from those people who own land alongside the River Kird, Dr Alison Barker has been carrying out a survey of damsel- and dragonflies locally. This area was not included in the work done by the Arun and Rother Connections, ARC, project so is helping establish what species are present and recording those found on the local river within our Parishes. All I can say is you need very sharp eyes which fortunately Alison has.
Water condition training course We are still awaiting news about a water condition assessment training course which is due to be set up by Jeremy Burgess of the South Downs National Park. The Park is keen that the water courses within and outside the area are in good condition and need help from trained volunteers to do this.
Moths and bats Friday July 21st Wisborough Green Village hall, 8-10 pm. Dave and Penny Green of the Sussex Moth group will give a short talk on moths and set up some traps for overnight. Their talk will be followed by one by Sarah Hughes, who is based at Chichester District Council working with the local community on wildlife projects. She will talk about bats and then guide us on a walk after dusk. Let us know if you want to come – we had 24 people last year and a reserve list of 18…… Don’t forget to wear warm clothes and to bring a torch! BUT that’s not all. On Saturday morning July 22nd at 10 am, Dave and Penny will return and show us what moths are in the traps, help identify them and release them carefully. Watch out for posters about the Parishes Wildlife group in Kirdford and Wisborough Green as well as notices in the local papers. COME AND JOIN IN THE FUN SATURDAY, 8TH JULY – “DASHWOOD DAY” THAMES LOCK ON THE RIVER WEY (WEYBRIDGE) TO THE GUN’S MOUTH JUNCTION WITH THE WEY & ARUN CANAL, SHALFORD NEAR GUILDFORD The Wey & Arun Canal Trust and the National Trust are jointly celebrating the 150 th anniversary of JB Dashwood’s adventurous journey down the River Wey along the Wey & Arun Canal towards the Solent. His mission was to see the Spithead Review in 1867 and he took his small boat ‘Caprice’ from Thames Lock at Weybridge, along the Wey & Arun Canal on his way to Portsmouth. Description: 9.30am boats to arrive at Thames Lock (KT13 8LG), River Wey near Chertsey in Surrey. There is NO car parking at Thames Lock. For canoes etc launching is via the public slipway in Walton Lane (KT13 8LU). Refreshments at Thames Lock for all boaters*, canoeists, kayakers, paddleboarders, walkers and cyclists. There is a rail connection to Chertsey. Please book online at www.weyarun.org.uk – events or by email events@weyandarun.co.uk so that we know the likely number of participants (however you intend to travel). Boaters and spectators are encouraged to wear their own interpretation of Victorian boating dress. 30

The journey proceeds along the River Wey through Send and Bowers Lock before reaching Stoke Mill and the centre of Guildford. There are a number of pubs along the route in Guildford and plenty of public car parking available as well as a rail connection. Afternoon – Shalford Mill (owned by the National Trust, GU4 8BS) will be open 14pm. Please book online (see above) so that we can make arrangements for the visit. Normal admission charges apply, for non-NT members. The finishing line is at Gun’s Mouth, Shalford, on the Wey & Arun Canal and the start of a planned new connection. There will be the official opening ceremony of the new canoe landing stages at Gun’s Mouth Island kindly sponsored by British Canoeing. The Story Behind the Event: 150 Years Ago, "From the Thames to the Solent" [a reprint of JB Dashwood’s 1867 book is available for sale through the Wey & Arun Canal Trust.] Jarrett Bacon Dashwood and the 1867 Spithead Review Recent research in the census and genealogy records by Wey & Arun Canal Trust historian Tony Pratt has revealed JB Dashwood was a schoolmaster in Essendon in Hertfordshire when he made the journey narrated in his book “From the Thames to the Solent”. One of five brothers, he was 35 at the time and had just married Maria
Geere, who went with him in the una boat "Caprice". Newspaper records are now available which shed further light, both on Dashwood and the Review of the Fleet that he set out to observe. He was in fact the Principal of West House School in Essendon as shown by advertisements of the year. Maria long outlived him and gained the unusual distinction of reaching the age of 105 before her death in 1935. It was noted that she was the widow of JB, described as a descendant of Lord Bacon, explaining his second name. The review of the Fleet was held in honour of the Sultan of Turkey and his Viceroy of Egypt, and the Sultan was awarded the Order of the Garter by Queen Victoria on the quarterdeck of the Royal Yacht presumably to recognise an important ally. Perhaps it was also as an encouragement to purchase British-built warships! The actual occasion proved something of a disappointment to spectators on the shore as a storm reduced visibility and the planned manoeuvre where two lines of ships were to up-anchor and proceed against each other, was cancelled as too hazardous and likely to result in collisions. The whole exercise was delayed as the Viceroy used the London Brighton & South Coast Railway (LBSCR) which arrived at a different station from the 31 Sultan to the confusion of the welcoming party of local dignitaries! The failure to achieve the promised spectacle gave rise to a question in Parliament to reveal the practical difficulties of getting anchors up in high winds with ships still carrying the enormous windage of masts and rigging despite being steam powered. It was suggested that even if it could be achieved safely it would have taken most of daylight! A visit to "Warrior" at Portsmouth will attest to the background of this remark, she was one of the more powerful and easily handled of the Fleet at the time. Many were still fully rigged like "Victory" and with relatively small engines. The same storm may have been the cause of Dashwood abandoning his own onward voyage to Christchurch from the Solent as described in the latter part of his account. The area around and beyond Hurst Castle can be a daunting prospect for small craft when the wind rises.

Recipe of the Month
Grilled peaches with prosciutto, rocket and balsamic (Courtesy of Bill's (Bill Collison) The Cookbook 'Cook, eat, smile')
This is a delicious summer dish, which I've made a few times as an accompaniment to a BBQ feast! The sweet and savoury flavours work so well together and it looks so appetising! Obviously you could choose other salad leaves, maybe of differing colours.
Ingredients (Serves 4 approx)
4 peaches, halved and stoned 1 tbsp sunflower oil 140g rocket 1head baby endive, trimmed and torn 2 tbsp olive oil 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar 12 slices of prosciutto ham 2 x 125g balls of buffalo mozzarella, torn in pieces 33
Method 1. Put the peach halves, cut side down, on kitchen paper to dry for 5 minutes. Meanwhile heat a griddle pan to a medium heat. Brush each peach half with sunflower oil and griddle them in batches, skin side down, for 2 minutes. Turn them over and griddle skin side uppermost for 1 minute. 2. Place the rocket and endive in a shallow bowl, mix the olive oil and vinegar together in a jug and pour this over the salad leaves. Gently toss the leaves, then arrange the peach halves on top of the salad with the prosciutto and mozzarella. Finish with a grind of fresh black pepper.

Update Broadford Bridge Exploratory Drilling Site, Adversane UKOG moved a drill rig onto the Broadford Bridge site overnight on May 25 th. It gave West Sussex County Council proper notice but did not send notification to residents living within a 1 km radius, as recommended in good planning practice, apart, that is, from 4 households including the farmer who owns the field. 41 properties are located within the specified area. Instead, residents were suddenly bombarded by noisy vehicles, the sight of the rig towering above their hedgerows and the escalation of police and security to keep out campaigners worried that the original plan for conventional oil drilling was being changed to one using ‘acidisation’ - chemicals in water to flush out the oil beneath. Bill Farmer, owner of the 350-year-old Broadford Bridge Farmhouse- just a few hundred yards from the oil pad returned from work abroad to discover mayhem on his doorstep, He said: “We’ve owned this property for 35 years now and we heard about the first application for drilling and then all of a sudden now in the last week or so we’ve heard the flurry of the company’s arrival, a drill rig is there and there’s really only ever been one leaflet in my door from the company explaining what it is all about. “We’d like to make sure it is being done properly and environmental impact assessments are the language of the world today so any community, whether they are the poorest people in Africa or people sitting in W Sussex, want to feel that some form of environmental impact 34 assessment has been done for something that is happening on their doorstep and that the people who are objective and are neutral and well-versed can assure us about what is going to happen. At the moment we’re in the dark.” Bill says the whole plan is out of step with the world view of the environment. “Is this a wise thing for anybody to be doing in South East England right now? I’ve just returned from a major climate change finance meeting in Spain and frankly the mood is - keep this stuff in the ground and let’s work on cleaner energy rather than back to fossil fuels stuff.” Other residents, to whom the Broadford Bridge Action Group 1 spoke, said the original owner of the site, Celtique Energy, had consulted regularly with them about their conventional site. But KOGL (a subsidiary of UKOG (and the former Celtique Energie after UKOG bought up the company and re-named it) did nothing to warn them about the significant gearing up of their operations nor their current plans which have greatly changed from the first application which was given permission by WSCC Planning committee in February 2013. This should never have been allowed to start at this time. A full environmental impact assessment on the new information should have been carried out before any work was allowed. Meanwhile we will continue to press the EA to refuse permission for the variation to their environmental permit which now involved unconventional oil exploration. Evidence from the Campaign to Protect Rural England, CPRE, points to the existence of a fault which could thus provide a route for liquids and chemicals to pose a real risk to our water and which also threaten several important wildlife areas within 10k of the site including an internationally important site on the River Arun. Already the increased HGV use has led to erosion at the Adversane crossroads. 1
Broadford Bridge Action Group is a newly formed umbrella group for all those concerned about the site at West Chiltington south of Billingshurst in West Sussex It exists to draw more attention to the issues on the site
In the recent elections all parties except the Conservative Party and UKIP opposed unconventional oil development. Of concern to this area, the Conservative Party manifesto included a reference to making drilling a Permitted Development which would then not need to be considered by either the Minerals Planning Authority nor involve public consultation.
Actions: There is a weekly gathering of concerned local people on Saturday afternoons from 2-4 pm by the crossroads near Blacksmiths Arms, at the corner of Adversane Lane, RH14 9JH about a mile from the drill site.
On June 5th, World Environment Day a group met at 5 am outside the site gates to greet the dawn and to celebrate all that the earth provides for life.
The Broadford Bridge Protectors’ Camp was set up on a strip of land with permission and participants have taken part in slow walks in front of arriving HGVs and locked onto the gates themselves. There have been some arrests. This is a rapidly changing situation.

Wisborough Green History - THE ALDERSHO Concluding the details of the bus service that ran between Wisborough and Guildford from 1928 to 1977 and which was provided by the Aldershot & District bus company and its successor. After the war, the pre-war services were re-instated to give seven buses per day at a cost of 1/9d (around 9p) to Guildford. Five of these continued on to Kirdford Half Moon though this arrangement ceased in 1952. On Sundays, there were five buses with four continuing to Kirdford. Use of the Butts Works outstation ceased at this time. The service in the 1950s then settled down to a regular pattern of four buses a day with none on Sundays. Few details have survived but it is known that the fare to Guildford in 1956 was 2/2d (about 11p). In the sixties the rapid rise in private car ownership started affecting the number of passengers on public transport and created the need for economies. In 1967 36 the service started being operated by AEC 40-seat Reliance single-deckers that were suitable for one-man operation thus saving staff costs. A photo of a preserved one was shown last month. The amalgamation with Thames Valley in 1972 required further economies to be made, such that the route 49 was closed and a new service (number 269) was introduced the following year. It ran a circular journey from Guildford via Loxwood (as before) then Laker's Lodge, Ifold, Plaistow and back to Guildford. Another service (number 279) was introduced in 1978 that ran from Guildford, Loxwood, Kirdford, Wisborough and onto Billingshurst station and return; there were two buses a week that ran on Tuesday and Thursday. In 1978, this was rerouted to run from Guildford to Cranleigh, Loxwood, Newpound and Billingshurst station this cutting out the village centre. This was the end of the bus services to Guildford. The two above show route 49 AEC Reliance buses arriving in the village and the two opposite show calling at the Fox and Hounds pub that used to be at Roundstreet opposite Drungewick Lane.
OT AND DISTRICT BUS SERVICE (Concluded) I want to conclude with some miscellaneous notes. Driving the bus in the 1930s and earlier was harder and more involved than nowadays. One anecdote concerned garaging the bus in the outstation in winter. As anti-freeze wasn't always available, the almost boiling water from the radiator had to be drained into containers that were put into a box filled with straw and kept warm for re-use in the morning when it would be returned to the engine in time for the first bus. This was to prevent the engine freezing with the risk of the engine block cracking and to make the engine easier to turn over when being started as the oil had been warmed. The conveyance of parcels was a standard service. The sender was required to pay the conductor when it was handed in for conveyance. A case arose in 1938 when a hamper of laundry failed to be delivered to Mrs Moorey of The Malt Cottage, Wisborough Green because no money had been paid by the sender and so the driver, 37 a relief driver unfamiliar with this hamper being sent regularly, was taking it back to Guildford with him when an inspector detected it when he checked the bus at the Sir Roger Tichborne pub. I don't know how this ended but a ruling was made that the two regular drivers (Bill Bridger and William Dance) had to insist upon payment being received from the sender. W hen the buses arrived from Guildford, they turned left into the A272 and pulled up at the bus shelter outside The Three Crowns. After waiting for ten minutes, they went along School Road and back to Guildford. There was a complaint from the police in July 1946 that some drivers were turning right into the A272, then reversing eastwards against the traffic until they were outside The Three Crowns! Finally, I am grateful to the Aldershot & District Bus Interest Group for many of the details in this article. They have preserved several A&D buses and have a vast repository of detailed information and ephemera. Richard B

Keep an eye out for pests on plants, early
treatment is best.
Pinch out tomato side shoots each week. Cut off any leaves growing
below the lowest ripening fruit trusses to improve air circulation and prevent diseases. Feed weekly with dilute tomato fertiliser.
Start harvesting garlic and overwintered onions, freeing up ground
for other crops. I’ll be planting my late flowering Dahlias in these beds.
Harvest marrows and courgettes regularly to encourage a continued
supply.
Watch for blackfly on your broad beans, pinching out affected
growing tips.
Spray tomato plants and potato foliage with Bordeaux mixture to
prevent blight. Take a look at www.blightwatch.co.uk where you can register for blight warnings in your area.
Use untreated grass clippings as a mulch around most vegetables
plants to suppress weed growth. They will eventually rot in and help feed your crops.
Peg down runners on your strawberry plants to provide more plants
for next year. If you don't need extra plants simply remove the strawberry runners completely.
Prune your plum, apricot, peach and cherry trees now. Pruning these
species in the summer reduces the risk of these trees getting silver leaf disease.
Check the leaves of gooseberry bushes for sawfly larvae, which can
completely strip the foliage in a matter of days. Jet them off with water or pick them off by hand.

Local Club and Society News Wisborough Green Spitfire Simulator Club Why not join the Spitfire Simulator Club? The prime purpose of our simulator project is to raise money for the RAF Benevolent Fund and to that end, simulator flights are normally charged for. However, with the Simulator Club, members make a small donation to the RAFBF (ÂŁ5 per year) and their name goes into a hat every month and the winner gets a flight for free. Wisborough Green Short Mat Bowls Club We entered a team in the Ashington Charity Tournament on Sunday 14th May and, after an enjoyable day, finished as runners up in the Plate Competition. Congratulations go to Bernard, Jane, Monica and David. We then entertained Ashington in a friendly match on Wednesday 17th May, with Wisborough running out winners in the match by 4 shots. The teams each won one mat, on Mat 1 (Jane, David, Bernard and Monica) losing 16 - 21 and Mat 2 (Tony, Evelyn, Shirley and Pauline) winning 21 - 12 giving a Match Result of 37 - 33. Wisborough Green Short Mat Bowls Club (Cont.) We travelled to Alfold for a friendly match on Tuesday 30 th May and on a challenging floor Wisborough won on one mat and lost on two. Mat 1 (Carol, Gavin, Shirley and Pauline) winning 25 - 19, Mat 2 (Hilary, Marilyn, Tony and Monica) losing 12 - 18 and Mat 3 (Jane, Lorraine, David and Bernard) losing 17 - 18 giving a Match Result of 54 55. The Captains Day Competition on Monday 5th June was well attended with 5 teams and 22 players taking part. The teams all played 4 games in rinks format which were generally very competitive with Dave Herbert (skip), Hilary Nulty, Audrey Hodgson/George Shipway and Jennie Carter finishing in 3rd place with 4 points. In second place with 6 points and plus 6 were Monica Enticknap (skip), Keith Carter, Lorraine Berry and Evelyn Ringrose. But congratulations go to David Luxford (skip), Marilyn Knight, Derek Tatman and Ann Beasley who took top spot with 6 points and plus 9. Our sponsors, Eight Wealth Management, were also in attendance and their representative Steve Adsett presented a cheque for ÂŁ250 to Captain Monica Enticknap (Left). We are now into the second round of the club singles. Wisborough Green Horticultural Society Happy Gardening in July Our thoughts and condolences go to Reg Snelgar. His wife Pam had been a very long standing member, friend and contributor to the Horticultural Society. She will be greatly missed. DATE FOR YOUR DIARY. Volunteers give 1200 years’ service Last month, FSW celebrated the achievements of 60 volunteers who between them have given 1200 years’ service to the charity. Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of East Sussex presented awards at a special lunch held at St. Nicholas Church, Brighton. Volunteers from across Sussex help the charity in different ways: providing emotional support to families, helping with respite holidays, delivering food boxes, and driving children and their parents to appointments. The longest serving volunteer, Mrs Margaret French (pictured) has been involved with the organisation since 1960. When Margaret joined, the Association was an adoption and fostering agency, supporting single mothers at a number of Maternity Homes throughout Sussex. Now FSW helps all kinds of families by undertaking home visits and running group activities.
WI Report On the 1st June the WI met back at the Village Hall for the meeting. We learnt of Cromwell's career which began when he joined the French Army. It was soon apparent that he was a good organiser and used this ability advising Henry VIII. The dissolution of the Monasteries was a huge task countrywide and Helen gave us interesting details relating to Sussex establishments such as Boxgrove, Lewes etc. Cromwell grew wealthy partly via asset stripping the monasteries but was sent to the Tower and beheaded as Henry was adverse to Anne of Cleves whom Cromwell advised he should marry. Cromwell introduced the recording of baptisms, weddings and funerals which has been invaluable to historians. These documents were kept in Parish chests. Our next meeting on the 6th July is all about recycling, so for those of you would couldn’t make out the pictures in the April edition of the Ad Vincula you’d better come along and all will be explained! Weather Watch Wisborough Green Rainfall for May was 82mm – (last year 33mm - 9 yr average 52mm). It looked as if the very dry April was going to continue into May but surprisingly it turned out to be the wettest May for at least ten years – thanks to a 24 hour day of rain! Hopefully drought fears are now delayed! Lowest temperature for May was minus 3.8°C in Eskdalemuir (Dumfries and Galloway) and warmest was 27°C at Northolt (London). Sunshine was 10% above average. Art Trail Exhibition As part of the July Horsham Arts Festival, Horsham Artists Open Studios group is staging an Art Trail Exhibition over the week-ends 8th/9th and 15th/16th July. With an especially designed map of the local area, you will be able to plan your visits to the studios and exhibition venues where you will be able to talk with the artists and makers about their choice of materials and the different ways in which they approach their work. Come and find out how jewellery is made using a range of beads, stones and metals. Discover the different ways visual artists work with wood, oil and water-colour paints and fabric. The map will also provide you with full details about the availability of parking, refreshments, access arrangements and toilets. You will also find a list of artists and makers with an accompanying thumbnail image of their work so you will be able to plan your route.
