Pastoral Letter Nehemiah 8:10 Nehemiah said, go and enjoy choice food and sweet drinks and send some to those who have nothing prepared. This day is holy to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength. June is likely to be busy for many folk in the village, with St. Peter’s Flower Festival, Open Gardens and Wisborough Green School Fete at the beginning of the month. Towards the end of June we have our Patronal Festival: St Peterstide, 10.30am on Sunday 28tth followed by lunch in the Vicarage garden. In the scripture above, Nehemiah is encouraging the people to recommit themselves as they renew the covenant with the living God in Jerusalem, having returned from exile. They had been busy restoring the city, its walls and temple. Nehemiah reminds them, rather commands them, that joy from God is not just a passing emotion, but a deeply held conviction that joy strengthens relationships with each other and God himself. During the next few weeks we need to remind each other of the joy of the Lord, when that flower arrangement does not seem right or the cakes do not turn out as planned, or the wind blows through the garden, causing even more work! May I extend a really big thank you to all those who are working ‘to maintain the church’ and expand its reach in the village. For those who give of their time and energy to make all the events happen. We sometimes forget to recognise all the hard work that goes into the planning, preparation and delivery of such events as these. Nehemiah encouraged the people to enjoy the fruits of their labours and celebrate God’s blessing. May I also echo his words, that we also take time out to enjoy the beauty of God’s creation during this month of June, whatever the weather! Clive and Marion Don’t Forget LE JOG (Land’s End to John O’Groats) - Jamie Daniell is undertaking this walk from 11th April through to early July. The purpose is to raise money for improvement works to St Peter Ad Vincula and for The Motor Neurone Disease Association (MNDA). Please help Jamie to raise as much money as possible on his ‘Just Giving’ site: www.justgiving.com/teams/jamiedaniell or Text: JDSD65 £(amount) to 70070 for MNDA SPAV65 £ (amount) to 70070 for the Church

Prayer Chain of Prayer Worried about a loved one, a friend or yourself and would like prayers to be said by a chain of people? Contact Wendy 700295 or Gillian 700157 and they will start the chain by contacting the person next to them on the list and so it goes all the way round. A copy of the chain is on the notice board at the back of church. Prayer is a powerful and important part of life and one should never under estimate its effect. You don't need to give any details of the problem just ask for prayers to be said and it will happen. Please note that it will be treated with total confidentiality.
Prayers are offered for parishioners who are in special need, especially the sick and frail. Please advise either of the churchwardens of any persons or situations you would like remembered in this way. All those living in particular roads are prayed for regularly, the whole parish being covered over a 12-week cycle: Week beginning:

From the Editor Welcome to the June edition of Ad Vincula. I am delighted to say that Marion Jenkins has agreed to provide me with some backup by acting as Assistant Editor. I also have someone who has expressed an interest in the advertising role but, at the time of writing, we haven’t had a chance yet to meet up to discuss. More, hopefully, next month. Another packed edition this month. In addition to the usual articles, this month we have updates on FSW and the Boxal Bridge petition below, a report on the Annual Unlock Walk (p13), information about a local connection to the Nepal Earthquake disaster (p15), a report on the very enjoyable Rogation Walk (p17) and details about how to comment on the Submission Version of the NP (p19). As always, I would love to hear from you with any comments or suggestions. Best wishes, Roland Zilz
Family Support Work - An Update Many of you will equate Family Support Work with Knowles Tooth Children's Centre at Hurstpierpoint. Sadly the house will soon be sold – but the work always continues and now in a far more focused way. Children in need of a holiday are still having wonderful breaks and it is an inspiration to hear the support social and play workers give to vulnerable families. FSW hopes to open an office and client help centre with coffee shop – and to maybe have one or more charity shops. Meanwhile they would like to Thank You for all the food put in the basket in the back of church. We know from the work of the Tressel Trust how much food is needed. At present 'our food' is going to families in the village and also in Storrington and the Bognor area. Judy Moorey 01403 700700
Boxal Bridge Update The petition to save Boxal Bridge closed on 6th May. After an informal count, to be confirmed by WSCC, we believe that we have over the 3,000 signatures required. Once this is verified by WSCC we will be able to choose a course of action best suited to the situation – either a hearing at a full County Council meeting or we can chose to present our case to the relevant Select Committee. Having set up this petition I would like to thank all those who have signed on line and on the many paper petitions left in local shops, services and pubs around the villages on the North East of the District. I would also like to thank all the local businesses which supported our petition. Having seen off the completely unsuitable oil and gas application proposed by Celtique Energie for a field south of this very bridge, we are equally determined to see off this latest threat to the bridge itself. Nature Notes Sad news to start, I’m afraid. Our dear old pheasant chum and constant companion has been killed on the road. He ruled over our garden with great bravura for years. As he aged he gradually retreated into the fields. I regularly followed with food and water, and he survived far longer than we expected. He’s much missed. The picture shows him earlier this year in breeding plumage – again! He was ever hopeful! We are hopeful too that swallows will do well this year. Down at Brinsbury with our RDA group the other day, I was thrilled to see swallows and house martins all around the barns that house the college’s horses, and lots of sparrows too. It was late afternoon and they were feeding on the insects that gather round farm animals. Happy children, ponies and birds – who could ask for more? I’ve not seen a swift yet, but maybe they too will do well this year. And cow parsley is definitely doing well! The verges are filled with great swathes of it just now. With a slightly heavy heart I’ve had to cut some back so we can see along the road. It’s odd that one variety will suddenly have a bumper year, isn’t it. Cow parsley is very common, yet this year it looks particularly lovely as it dances all along our lane. The fruit trees are bursting with blossom, and the horse chestnuts too, so conkers galore later? Pink campion is covering our wild flower patch, with other flowers budding. I’m also delighted to report good numbers of orchids on road verges, especially up towards Bedham. There are one or two stalwart souls on lookout duty for council machines – usually the drivers will avoid orchids if you ask them nicely. I’m delighted to report that our Editor had a pair of hedgehogs in his garden at the end of April (Ed. the picture left is not great - they hid their faces in the undergrowth!). These delightful creatures need all the help they can get, so please try and leave a little opening in any fences. They travel considerable distances for food at night and only need a very small gap to help them on their way. This beetle might be a snack for them – found resting on the house wall one morning. Returning from Selsey the other day, on an impulse I pulled into Pagham Harbour Nature Reserve and had a wander along the Nature Trail. It’s only a small area, but within a short time I saw shelducks, plovers, redshanks, a curlew, three dainty avocets fishing with great vigour, and a little egret stalking its prey. A perfect, peaceful hour. Then I got a report of skylarks singing their hearts out in fields to the east of the village. Barn owls are also reported behind the B2133. And there are tadpoles in Carters Pond after all, hooray! Plus - we’ve had confirmation of both Bechsteins and Barbastelle bats close to Boxal Bridge and the SWT reserve, another hooray. (nb – big thanks to all who signed the petition to keep the bridge.) So, much good news to end with! Sue J 11
Wisborough Green Primary School News As I write this month’s letter, we are in the process of administering the National End of Key Stage 2 tests to our Year 6 children. There is a range of tests, from reading comprehension to spelling and grammar and Mathematics, which are sent to the school and are then externally marked. The children have a short amount of time, averagely about 45 minutes per test, to show what they know and can do. The children at Wisborough Green have a brilliant attitude to learning and will apply themselves to the best of their ability and so far this week I have seen so many examples of this. I think it shows that all of our preparation has paid off. The children are not fazed by the tests; they have a go and do their best. Of course, it is important to realise that these tests can only form part of the overall teacher assessment. A child’s true ability cannot simply be judged on his or her performance in a 45 minute test. So we spend a lot of time, as teachers, assessing the children’s work throughout the year to give us a fuller picture of their ability. I think the teaching profession looks forward to the day when teacher assessment supersedes testing. As for the rest of the school, much work is underway as usual! The children are learning about rainforests, environmental issues and mini beasts at the moment. We have planned visits to Ford Recycling Centre and the beach next half term. Year 6 have a special treat planned as they have been working so hard, a day visit to Thorpe Park. The children will be finding out how the rides work (wonderful link to forces!) alongside having some well-deserved fun. Do have a look at our wonderful website to see what the children have been up to recently as it is being updated weekly. The canopy has now been installed in our Early Years Area, so the children can be outside in all weathers. We will appreciate it at this time of year especially as the children will have some protection from the sun; it gets very hot at the back of the school building. We hope that it will help keep the classrooms cooler too. We are now waiting for the playground markings to be added to that area and then it’s all finished! The school really does look amazing now, I’m sure children and parents will have been talking about it all! It is with very mixed emotions that I have to tell you that I have resigned from my post as Headteacher of Wisborough Green. The decision to leave was not an easy one but I am off to pastures new in September. Whoever is appointed to continue serving as Headteacher will be extremely fortunate as it is a wonderful school which is filled with the most amazing children and staff. I will of course continue to update you on our progress for the rest of the summer term and look forward to seeing many of you at our Summer Festival on the 6th June on the Village Green. Kind regards, Trudy Emberson, Headteacher 12

Annual UNLOCK Walk - 25th April 2015 The forecast was rain, but the sun shone on the 33rd London Unlock Walk. Ten happy members of St Peter's joined many others on the walk supporting inner city churches. In our 8 mile walk we visited seven very different churches. It was not good to be offered bacon butties in our first church – and this probably hindered our progress! But from leafy Ladywell to Deptford Market, from the beautiful Thames to Bermondsey we were met by hope and laughter. The churches were as varied as the congregations. One church has an average congregation of 300 on a Sunday and 42 different languages are spoken. Hard for us in Wisborough Green to imagine. St Olav's, the Norwegian church, supports the 10,000 strong Norwegian community in London – and they also provide wonderful Norwegian waffles!! The gospel message of good news is communicated in so many different ways. Thank you to all who have supported us by prayer and sponsorship. £500 was raised. We are expecting many more of you to join us next year! Judy Moorey 13

Earthquake Disaster in NEPAL We have all seen the dreadful images coming out of Nepal following the devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake on 25 April 2015 and the large number of aftershocks including one which measured 7.3 on 12 May. Thousands lost their lives and many thousands more were injured. One of the worst affected areas is the district of Sindupulchowk to the East of Kathmandu (see map) and Wisborough Green has a very personal connection with this district through Ami Yeo whose Aunt lives there. Ami works at Fisher’s Farm Park, is married to Adam Yeo, and lives at Old Pond Cottage in Wisborough Green, with her in-laws, Sandie and Brian. On Sunday, 3rd May, Ami made a very eloquent and passionate plea in church for aid for Nepal and, in particular, for her Auntie’s village. A retiring collection was made in church and Ami sends the following Thank You note: “I am so thankful for all your generosity in helping our people. The money you gave will help many. I have sent the funds to a company called Shelterbox, which was recommended to us, and having spoken to them, we are assured that they are already working in the district of Sindupulchowk where my Auntie lives. From the Retiring Collection in Church, and the sale of Cashmere Jumpers at the plant sale and the Village Market, as well as the many generous donations we have received, we have so far managed to send over £1000 to them, and with gift aid, this is a considerable sum – this is a very poor country, so every pound raised goes a long way! My parents and family live in Pokhara, and thankfully are safe, and their house is still standing, however my Aunt who lives to the east of Kathmandu has lost everything - all the homes in her village have been destroyed. At a later stage, we will be sending aid direct to my Aunt, to allocate for the school where she is a governor and village elder, although at the moment, the immediate need is for shelter as the monsoon season will be with them very soon, which is why we chose shelterbox, a charity based in Cornwall. Again our heartfelt thanks God Bless, From Ami and family” To find out how you can help further, please contact Ami or Sandie on 01403 701110. 15

Rogation Walk 2015 The weather was amazing on the afternoon of Sunday 10 th May. A band of thirty took a gentle walk around Burchett’s Farm. Clive, the farmer, told us about ma n y interesting aspects of managing the farm at each stop. We started in the farmyard and progressed to the pond, bluebell wood and corn field where we were lead in prayer by Clive, the vicar, and sang a hymn. We then headed back to the farm buildings to see the cattle and learn a little about livestock management and to bless the work of this farm and our local farmers and growers. Just across the yard in the farmhouse garden we were treated to a delicious
cream tea, provided by Tina and friends. Many thanks to Clive and Tina for their hospitality and such a lovely afternoon. Among those stepping out on June 7th to raise money for the restoration of a historic waterway between West Sussex and Surrey will be a celebrity entrant. The little star will be taking part in the Wey & Arun Canal Trust’s annual fundraising walk. The event — called the Poddle — is the Trust’s major fundraising occasion of the year. Also on the stroll will be the Trust’s chairman, Sally Schupke, who is seeking sponsorship from members of the public. “If people aren’t already sponsoring someone for the walk it would be fantastic if they could support Sally,” said Poddle co-ordinator Margaret Darville. “Or you can sponsor the last person to finish.” Poddle organiser Margaret Darville with celebrity friend
This year’s Poddle starts and finishes at St Michael’s Church Hall in Amberley. It follows an 11-mile route across the South Downs National Park, with options to walk the whole distance or just the afternoon section. Walkers are asked to raise a minimum of just £20 a person. “The restored canal will bring far wider benefits than just boating opportunities,” added Mrs Darvill. “It will be a green corridor that can be also be enjoyed by walkers, cyclists and wildlife enthusiasts, which is why we are keen for a wide cross-section of the public to support the Poddle participants.” To sponsor one of the walkers or to take part in the Poddle, call Mrs Darvill on 01483 894606 or e-mail her at poddle@weyandarun.co.uk. WISBOROUGH GREEN FESTIV St Peter’s Festival Weekend Wisborough Green will be the centre of much activity during the weekend of 5th – 7th June. On Friday and Saturday from 10am – 5pm and on Sunday from 12noon – 5pm the church will be the venue for a spectacular Flower Festival. The flower arrangers of Wisborough Green have been scouring woods and beaches for interesting pieces of wood, peering over your garden hedge to identify that elusive piece of foliage to complement an arrangement and looking with interest at that old vase you inherited from Aunt Agatha and wondering if it is watertight. The theme is “HYMNS OF GLORY” and your favourite hymn titles have been used as inspiration for the arrangers and, as so many hymns are on a theme of Earth's Beauty, the colours of morning and evening and the wonders of Creation, you can expect a riot of colour and a celebration of the beauty around us. On Saturday and Sunday, 6th & 7th June,
Ten Open Gardens, including some previously unseen, will be on show from 11am – 5pm with tickets available from the tent on the Green. At 7pm on Friday, 5th June there will be an Organ Recital in the church by Malcolm Brinson and on Saturday 6th at 7pm there will also be a Concert in the church featuring the young and exciting Saxophone Quartet, Ferio as well as a host of local talent. Tickets available on the door or from Suzanne on 01403 700946. The weekend will be rounded off with a Songs of Praise in church on Sunday at 5.30pm. Delicious scones, cakes, teas and coffees will be served throughout the weekend at various venues so do come along and enjoy everything on offer. St Peter’s LINKS Committee

VAL WEEKEND 5 to 7 June 2015 WG Primary School Summer Festival The inaugural Wisborough Green Primary School Summer Festival is taking place on Saturday 6th June 2015 from 12 – 7pm on the village green. The event is part of a great Wisborough Green Festival Weekend as the Open Gardens and Flower Festival will also be taking place. We are delighted to announce the names of the two local bands who will headline the event. After the usual attractions of a summer fair, with everything from a Maypole princess procession to a tug of war plus dozens of stalls, the event will have more of a family festival feel. Taking first to the balcony of the green’s cricket pavilion will be Blues Issue. Hailing from Brighton and described as “ten handed, twelve barrelled, rockin’ blues”, they will start playing about 3pm. The finale to the whole event will be just what the doctor ordered: a heart pumping, temperature rising performance from the Rock Docteurs who will take to stage at about 4.45. Enjoy the hog roast, pizza and refreshments on offer as you kick off your shoes and enjoy the sizzling sounds of summer. Vanda Miller, PTA Secretary

Wisborough Green History In last month's issue I described an aerial attack in the centre of the village. Another attack happened on a convoy in Kirdford Road. A young Eric Clark witnessed German aircraft attack a convoy of military vehicles with anti-tank shells one evening shortly after D-Day in June 1944. The vehicles were parked near his parent's home in Kirdford Road; this was a pre-fab bungalow called Isledene that has since been rebuilt into a brick house that was attached to Wisborough Green Nursery where his family grew vegetables for sale locally. He didn't notice how many aircraft took part in the attack; maybe there was only one. None of the shells hit the convoy, but several hit the bungalow making holes in the walls and some hit the surrounding sheds and glasshouses. One particular shell entered the west wall of the bungalow, through a picture, across a bedroom (completely smashing the dressing table and turning the mirror to powder), on through a door and two more walls, bouncing and embedding itself upwards in the dining room sideboard where it gouged out a groove as it came to a rest. The shock cracked jars of preserves that his mother had made so the jam oozed out of the cupboard on to the floor. Eric and his family were under the dining room table at the time. The anti-tank shells were around 3½" long and 1" diameter and were designed to pierce tank armour and release poison gas to kill the tank's occupants. Fortunately the shell wasn't designed to explode so no further damage was done. Eric still has the shell and the damaged sideboard. A photo of them is shown courtesy of Eric Clark. Eric had other village war memories. On one occasion Incendiary bombs were dropped during the night near where he lived in Isledene in Kirdford Road. These bombs usually fell in a shower. Many fell towards Montague Farm opposite where they caused lots of badly burnt grass and one of them set a hayrick on fire at Sparr Farm. It was thought that some houses had their curtains blackened by smoke from the subsequent fires, otherwise not much serious damage was done. As a child, Eric was usually not allowed out to investigate when there’d been incendiaries dropped in case he tried to play with the unexploded ones. However he was aware of them having been dropped because of the smoke coming from burning grass, trees and hayricks. If they didn’t ignite, Eric and his friends used to open them and make fireworks from the magnesium. 30
- WW2 AERIAL ATTACKS 2 In one particular incident, Eric found one of the magnesium bombs that had failed to burn fully although the fuse and igniter had burnt out. He kept it as a souvenir for some years but when he was about 14 (and he was someone who liked to experiment with fireworks!) he cut up the bomb with a hacksaw to extract the magnesium. Inevitably the magnesium ignited and burnt his eyelashes and some hair. He thinks he was lucky to survive! There were several types of bomb. The most common type of bomb comprised a tube about 2" diameter containing the igniter and magnesium and a tail with fins around 13½" long in total, see the attached picture courtesy of Urban 75 Forum Bombs in Brixton. Generally the worst that happened was the blackening of trees and burning of grass. The most serious occasion was when incendiary bombs fell on Carters works in Newpound. The bombs set fire to the two factory units now occupied by West Sussex Antique Timber and they were almost completely burnt out although luckily the present WSAT offices were unaffected. The fire was put out by the Wisborough Green fire engine based in the Nissan hut on the narrow green in School Road and operated by the Auxiliary Fire Service. The factories were rebuilt by Balchins with a steel framework with brick infill and still stands today. Incendiary bombs were also dropped on other parts of the village, mainly on the fields to the east. These bombs were different (cylindrical about 3" diameter and 7" long with small fins an the side to give stability. Dick Carter remembered them being dropped on the fields of Sweephurst Farm and near the council houses in Durbans Road whilst Suzy Evershed recalled that they were dropped on Brookbridge Farm and Sole Farm; she still has the receipt for the repair of the garage that was burnt by the incendiaries during one raid. Finally, a parachute land mine came down one late evening c1943 in the field between Brookbridge House and Howfold Farm. This blew out all the windows of Brookbridge House and Jim Balchin was called upon to replace them. It was thought the aircraft concerned was deflected from bombing Dunsfold by anti-aircraft fire. The other item that fell upon the village was chaff dropped by the Luftwaffe to deceive the British radar. This was charcoal coloured strips of aluminium foil stuck to paper about ¾” wide and varying in length from a few inches to several feet. After the war they were often to be found stuck in hedgerows. To be concluded next month with other aerial details including the V1s and V2s. Richard B. 31

Neighbourhood Watch - Crime News & Advice Recent rise in thefts from sheds and outbuildings Recently in the Chichester District there have been a significant amount of thefts from garages, sheds, outbuildings and stables. Offenders are cutting padlocks and forcing secure doors and the majority of thefts are occurring during night time hours. The items that are being stolen are garden machinery, tools; ride on mowers, quad bikes and horse tack. We are urging all residents, predominantly those in rural areas, to ensure that their property is identifiable by taking photographs. Store all valuable equipment and tools in a secure building with a well built, locked door. Use British Standard locks, good quality locking bars and high security padlocks. Windows can be protected with metal bars. Always lock outbuildings when they're not in use. A worthwhile investment is fitting outside security lights controlled by an automatic timeswitch or infra-red beams. Consider installing CCTV. Keeping your home secure In the warmer months we often see an increase in the number of burglaries due to houses not being secure. Houses with at least basic security (defined as window locks and deadbolts on doors) are at nearly 10 times lower risk of being burgled than those without. Following these basic crime prevention tips will reduce your chances of being burgled: If you leave your house empty - even when you are in the back garden - lock all the doors and windows and make sure fanlight windows are closed. Be especially careful about those on the ground floor and above flat roof areas. Put your garden tools and any ladders away into a secure garage or shed after using them, they could be used to break into your home, or your neighbours'. Double check fences and boundaries to make sure they keep burglars out. When you leave a room unattended, close and lock windows and doors especially on the ground floor. If you want to leave windows open while you sleep, fit window restrictors so they cannot be fully opened, or make sure they are not large enough to allow access to a burglar. Keep all wallets, purses, credit cards, car keys and other valuables out of sight. Consider fitting outside security lighting or a visible alarm to help deter burglars. Regards, Priscilla Pinkham If you have information about any crime call 101, email 101@sussex.pnn.police.uk or call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. If you see a crime taking place call 999. 33

Farmers’ and Village Market News
Next Market - Thursday 11th June 2015 Village Hall 9 am – 12.30 pm Hopes for a “round the Pond” Market in May bathed in sunshine, under blue skies were dashed and splashed by the ever increasing size and intensity of raindrops on the day. Thank goodness for weather forecasts. Would you like to have a lift to the Market? We are exploring the possibilities of providing extra help. Please contact Mary Lindfield – 01403 700624 - and leave details and contact number. There are a great number of “out of Wisborough Green” returning customers coming to the Market. It was really surprising considering the unseasonable cold and heavy rain on Market morning in May. The Market is meeting their needs; you may enjoy it too if you have not yet visited. In June we are expecting the Sussex Cheese stall and the fish stall to be here as well as all the other stallholders. May the sun shine on us all. The Gardener’s Calendar

Plant out annual summer bedding plants in borders, containers and hanging baskets now the risk of frost has passed. Lift and divide clumps of snowdrops and bluebells once the leaves start to yellow. Pinch out the tips of your fuchsias to encourage a bushy habit and more flowers. Cut back bulb foliage once it has died down naturally. Plant out tender vegetables like courgette, squash, tomatoes and sweetcorn now the chance of frost has past. Look out for yellowing of autumn planted onion and garlic foliage. This is a sign that they are ready to harvest. Continue to earth up main crop potatoes and think about harvesting your first earlies (ready 10 weeks after planting) Harvest salad crops and sow new every two weeks to ensure a constant supply of tasty leaves. Thin out congested branches on fruit trees for bigger and better fruits. Protect developing fruits from birds and squirrels by netting your plants. Peg down runners on strawberry plants to create more plants for next year. 37

Wisborough Green Horticultural Society Everyone is invited to The June Horticultural and Craft Show In the Village Hall on Sunday 21st June at 2pm and
The Visit to Hinton Ampner House and Garden Tuesday 16th June. The Plant Sale on the Little Green was a great success - luckily the clouds lifted in time. We made about £780 (with teas) even more than last June, without altering our prices either. This will help to pay the expenses of the June and August shows. We had some really unusual plants; pregnant onions (Ornithogalum longibracteatum now called Albuca bracteata), Aeonium and Russian kiwi fruit plant amidst others!) We had loads of vegetables this year including brassicas, onions and indoor and outdoor tomatoes. What was not sold will be on sale at the June Show together with more dahlias and other plants. An enormous thank you to everyone who brought plants and garden sundries.. The Clemens family team and Reg Snelgar deserve a medal for outstanding performance with plant propagation. Some people came specially for them, having bought them from last year and wanted more. Reg's greenhouse tomatoes were magnificent. A special thank you to Sally for letting us use her sheltered gravel area and garage to harbour the sale – a perfect location. The coach outing to Hinton Ampner will be on Tuesday 16th June not as printed on the schedule or membership cards. It may suit some better, others not. Apologies to everyone. We will depart from the Three Crowns at 10am and leave Hinton Ampner at 3pm. As well as the gardens there is the house...cafe....shop....plant sales....and woodland walks. Here's hoping for blue skies with fluffy white clouds. If you would like to book a place, please contact Philip (700402) or Kate Steele on 07777 625517 The June Show on 21 June will be soon upon us. Spare copies of the schedule are at the Village Shop. Please remember the helpful instructions at the back designed to help you take part. Roses are at their best around this period, weather permitting, so special care now may give yours that extra chance. Classes include other flowers, foliage and flowering shrubs, pot plants, vegetables and fruit.. So whatever the type of your garden window sill, conservatory, patio or digging garden then you can join in. Each home and garden has its own microclimate; each gardener treats plants slightly differently and of course the weather helps some more than others. So who knows what the winning combination will be this year. Floral arrangements, the cookery classes and Junior classes are all so interesting and individual, so have a go. Feel the trepidation and excitement. Have a bit of fun, join in. Come and enjoy. Aija Hamilton 39

Wealden Trefoil Guild We are always looking for new members to join us at the Trefoil Guild, so whether you were once a Brownie, Guide, Ranger or Leader or you have never been involved in guiding at all, you are welcome to come and join. Maybe you would like to come along for a visit and see if you like us! We have some interesting speakers – last month Dave Parker came along and gave us an insight into a soldiers’ life in WW1 and what he would have had to wear and carry as part of his uniform. He brought along an interesting collection of ammunition, letters, postcards and medals for us to see too. Some of our ladies helped with craft activities at the Petworth Park Guide & Scout Camp in May and we have been invited to visit other Guild’s events in the county for various days, afternoons and evenings of entertainment. Next month (2nd June) we are having a supper at one of our member’s home and on July 7th we have a fun Beetle Drive planned. So if you feel like the Trefoil Guild would suit you – please contact our Chairman Mrs Jackie Sharp (01403 784490) and she can give you all the information you need and would give you a warm welcome to our Guild. WI Report The W.I. met at the Sports Pavilion on the 7th May due to the village Hall being used as a Polling Station for the General Election and we were obviously going to be distraction! We were made very welcome at the Pavilion and we had a very convivial meeting discussing the Resolution that is due to be voted upon at the Annual Meeting at The Albert Hall on the 4th June. The Resolution discussed was ‘This Meeting calls on HM government to remove the distinction between nursing care and personal care in the assessment of the needs of individuals, in order to advance health and wellbeing’. This was talked about at length and was carried unanimously. Our vote will now be passed onto the relevant Group who will be attending the Meeting. After the discussion we then held a light hearted quiz which Janet Hester brought. Our next meeting is on June 4th when we will be going to Arundel and a member of staff from Arundel Museum will take us on a guided walk. For those who would like to share cars please meet in the Village Hall car park at 6.45 at the latest. We will all meet outside Arundel Museum at 7.30 p.m. For non-members there will be a charge of £4 per head. Please contact Mary for any queries We look forward to seeing you all there. Weather Watch Wisborough Green Rainfall for April was 14mm (last year 86mm – 7 yr average is 54mm). This is the second successive dry month which was looking a worry for gardeners. The lowest overnight temperature was minus 8.0°C at Katesbridge, County Down (NI). An exceptionally sunny April -142% of normal levels for the UK –the third sunniest April for 100 years!. Weathervane
CYBER TIPS Almost convinced My mobile phone rang the other day and a lady addressed me by name and called me “a valued customer”. Nothing unusual in that. I am on Pay As You Go and she offered me a better deal than I have at the moment, a deal, incidentally, that I don’t really need because I mainly use the mobile to find Hilary when we get separated on shopping expeditions. However since the deal involved reducing my cost by half for a period, I was willing to listen. She went through the drill and I suggested arranging to accept the offer when I next topped up. Her toned changed from “What a good customer you are!” to “strongly persuasive”. The deal meant that she needed my bank details there and then. I just said “Goodbye and Good Try!” And switched off. Need I say more? You must always maintain control of these conversations. Peter Edmonds
PACT News PACT held a successful Walk Through the Old Testament event - 40 attending. There is a clamour for a New Testament event next April. The weekly Friday Coffee mornings continue from 9.45 to 11.30 at the URC in Golden Square, Petworth and are very well supported. All profits go to charity. We are making plans for the usual large PACT Tea Tent at the Fete in the Park on Saturday July 11th - always a busy and happy time. The combined Petworth/PACT Festival Service will be Thursday 16th July at St. Mary's, Petworth at the much earlier time of 6pm.. The speaker will be Dean Emeritus of Chichester Cathedral -, Nicholas Frayling .
