Pastoral Letter “For at just the right time Christ will be revealed from Heaven by the blessed and only Almighty God, the King of all Kings and the Lord of all Lords” (1 Timothy 6:15 New Living Translation) The weekend of June 11th/12th has been designated a weekend to celebrate Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II 90th Birthday. Here in Wisborough Green the Primary School will be holding its Summer Festival that Saturday on the Village Green and I hope this will be a well-supported event, which I understand will have a ‘majestic’ theme. Here at St. Peter’s we shall be having a ‘Royal Special’ Time For God service at 10.30am on the Sunday morning. This will include traditional hymns and contemporary worship songs, plus a number of creative activities for all ages. In the afternoon there will be a ‘Vicarage Garden Party’ (if wet, in Church) from 3-5pm, with a red, white and blue theme. Cakes and cream teas will be available plus a couple of stalls to raise funds for ‘Diocesan Family Support Work’, and our daughter and son-in-law in Uganda who work for YWAM. At 6pm there will be a ‘Service of Songs of Praise’, with hymns and songs celebrating the Queen’s 90 th Birthday. I do hope you can join us for some, if not all, the events for this very special weekend. One of the items we will have available to give away is a very comprehensive and beautifully produced book entitled ‘The Servant Queen and the King She Serves’. Her Majesty has written the forward to the book, which includes quotes from her many Christmas broadcasts, and other speeches, plus a number of interesting comments. The Queen is not only the Constitutional Head of our nation and the Commonwealth, but also Supreme Governor of the Church of England and a committed Christian, who faithfully reads her Bible and begins and ends the day with prayer. She writes in the introduction: “In my first Christmas Broadcast in 1952, I asked the people of the Commonwealth and Empire to pray for me as I prepared to dedicate myself to their service at my Coronation. I have been - and remain - very grateful to you for your prayers and to God for His steadfast love. I have indeed seen His faithfulness.” So do come and join us as we celebrate the Queen’s 90th Birthday and give thanks to God for His faithfulness to our Sovereign and her service to Him. Clive and Marion

St Peter’s Luncheon Club - Queen’s 90th Birthday Special Seventy-nine sat down to lunch on 21st April to mark the 90th birthday of Her Majesty The Queen. The Village Hall was decked with bunting, the tables were laid in red, white and blue décor. Specially printed menus were on the tables. As the guests arrived they were greeted with a glass of bubbly. After Clive, our vicar, gave thanks with the Grace, we sang the National Anthem, raised our glasses in a Loyal Toast and then we had three rousing cheers for Her Majesty. Gillian Gough and her team received loud applause for a delicious meal of Elizabethan Pork, Queen of Puddings followed by Coffee and Royal Mints. It was a splendid occasion fit for a queen!

Wisborough Green Primary School News At Wisborough Green Primary School we really have started to enjoy the spring sunshine. The children are having a splashing time in the swimming pool, the bottle greenhouse is blooming and the field is full of fun at break times. This term our learning journeys are taking us to places we have never been before! We have bought some brilliant new books to inspire creative thinking and ignite a passion for reading and writing. Watch out JK Rowling and David Walliams we have some budding young authors ready to launch their work. Our space seeds are defying gravity and reaching for the stars! We are excited to be taking part in a national research project to see what happens to seeds that have been in space. Last week we welcomed a champion carrot grower and we now have the secret formula to help us grow carrots that even the Were-rabbit would be impressed with. Our garden area is starting to bloom and the children are taking great pride in it. We are excitedly making plans to develop a Beatrix Potter themed garden for the Billingshurst Rotary Garden Competition later this term. If you have any ideas or would like to help us develop this beautiful area then please let us know. With our Summer Festival just around the corner, our amazing PTA are busily planning the most spectacular musical event. Make sure you save the date, Saturday 11th June, as it promises to be a great day. The procession leaves the school at 12pm and there is entertainment throughout the day until 7pm. Finally, we are still keen for someone from the local community to become a co-opted governor. You do not need to have any experience but a desire to make a positive difference to the future of our school. If you would like more details about the role and responsibilities then please contact the School Office – office@wisboroughgreenschool.org.uk Warm regards, Amanda Harrison, Head Teacher, 01403 700280 12

WG Primary School Summer Festival PROMISING TO BE A ROYAL OCCASION Preparations are well under way for the major fundraising event of the year at Wisborough Green Primary School on Saturday 11th June. We are so looking forward to our Festival on the Green which is promising to be a right royal occasion in celebration of the Queen’s 90th birthday. The event will start with the traditional procession from the school on to the Green, led by the Summer Queen. This will be followed by a May Pole dance by the children, before the Wisborough Green Primary School Rock Choir take to the stage. We are lucky enough to have the Wisborough Green Glee Choir joining us along with the VMA Dance Academy, before the Village Commemorative Photo is taken to mark the Queen’s 90th Birthday at 3.00pm. It’s then on to the Tug of War, the Grand Prize Draw and the Right Royal Bake Off before we kick off our live music with The Blues Issue. Alongside all of this there will be our Shopping Village, Food Court and lots of fun for all the family. See poster on page 27. We hope the village will find the time to support this important event for the school, and that the weather will be kind to us and Her Majesty. If you would like to contribute to our fundraising initiative to re-equip the school with new computer and IT equipment, essential to the children’s learning, you can do so at: https://crowdfunding.justgiving.com/wisboroughgreenschoolpta We thank you so much for your support.

Nature Notes Good news! The pond has been cleared at last. Thank you Parish Council! (And thanks, Peter, for the pic). As you can see there was a huge amount of weed to remove. Ian Baldwyn, who did the work, says he’s a great fan of village ponds so it’s all in safe hands. Some of us attempted the same job years ago, got completely exhausted, and I’m not sure if we did much good really! Ian found about 80 eggs in the duck house. Several years-worth obviously, which is sad, isn’t it. He plans to return and make a much-needed ramp and provide some nesting material, so let’s hope for ducklings next year. Sadly I don’t think there’s any way to make any kind of bog garden area. These give various smaller aquatic creatures a more sustaining environment and a secure escape route when needed. Frogs and toads would especially benefit as well as many invertebrates. But Ian found an encouraging number of these – including smooth newts, 2 species of diving beetles, damsel and dragonfly larva, water boatmen and some tadpoles - this in spite of the presence of about 150 goldfish so all is not lost. He also plans to introduce some more suitable weed species to help rebalance the ecosystem for the longer term. I’m spoiled for photos this month and received a lovely picture of another creature that’s happy in water (thanks, Mark) It’s a very bold fly taking a chance, basking on this snake’s back! Some years ago, on our small pond, I came across a grass snake with a newt halfway down its throat. With my fondness for amphibians I was sorely tempted to try and pull it out! If it had been a crested newt I may have succumbed. Those temptations have gradually subsided. I’m sure you agree that Nature stays in better balance when we don’t interfere! Away from the water, there have been reports of peregrines nesting in Bedham again. One is also hunting over Pulborough Brooks. Cuckoos seem a little more abundant this year and even I have heard one now – hooray! We also have a local nightingale who sings as I trundle our ancient Jack Russell out for his late night wander. It is amazing how far their song can travel as they call for a mate. Makes up for all his endless stopping and sniffing! Also at the RSPB – on one morning seven nightingales were heard – all singing their hearts out! How about this gorgeous photo? (yes it’s Peter again!) The reserve must surely be worth a visit just now. And after all the glorious bluebells, there’s a small cluster of orchids on the road verge here. I do hope I’m here when the dreaded council mowers appear. Will be out there guarding ‘em! Lastly my usual reminder (nag? sorry!) I know you’ll look out for those many birds raising families – oblivious to danger as they dash across the lanes in front of us. So thank you! Sue J

A New Local Environmental Initiative th

11 March 2016 was the first anniversary of Celtique Energie’s withdrawal of plans to explore for oil and gas on land to the south of Boxal Bridge near Northup Copse. To mark the occasion Keep Kirdford and Wisborough Green (KKWG) hosted an event at Wisborough Green Village Hall where over 20 local people from both villages of Kirdford and Wisborough Green came together to hear a very informative and entertaining talk on local wildlife given by Michael Blencowe, Community Wildlife Officer at the Sussex Wildlife Trust. Michael’s talk reaffirmed that this area of Sussex is still blessed with a high quality environment but this situation must not be taken from granted as oil exploration is but one of a growing number of threats to our quality of life. This event was supported by funding provided by the Arun and Rother Connections group (ARC). The meeting finished with a ‘call to arms’. To protect the local environment better we first need to know what is out there – we need to create an evidence base or inventory of habitats, species and environmental conditions that are important locally. A group is being established by Jill Sutcliffe and Mike King to develop an ‘environmental map’ of our locality to ensure that when we face the next development threat we have the evidence at our finger tips to ensure that our local quality of life is not compromised. Volunteers to help with this mapping exercise are required. If you are interested and would like to get involved, please email or phone Jill (jillsutcliffe1@gmail.com) tel: 01403 700395 or Mike (mnking23@gmail.com) 01403 700713. On 23rd April, Jill and Mike attended an ARC workshop concerning amphibians. Following presentations in the Pulborough Village hall we re-assembled on the nearby RSPB reserve with warm clothes and torches. When water plants have leaves bent back it’s worth having a look and you may well find newt eggs! As it got darker we were very lucky to find examples of all three newts – Smooth, Palmate and the rare Greater Crested Newt. Future plans include survey work and a talk/guided walk with Jane Wilmott of SWT on August 12th looking for our local bat species using detectors. Details next month.

Link To Hope Charity Trek, Romania, Moldova. On the 11th June, I will be trekking in the eastern Carpathian mountains to raise money for ‘Link to Hope’. 5 days of ascent and descent. Equivalent apparently of walking up and down Snowdon each day! I need to raise £1500. I will be paying for the cost of the trip myself, so all money raised will go to this charity’s projects, which amongst other things, send the shoeboxes you fill each Christmas. Please support me and the work of this charity in these most underprivileged areas, and the people who live there. If you would like to sponsor me the easiest way is through my Justgiving page. www.justgiving.com/chris-mosley Thanking you in anticipation of your support, Chris Mosley 17

Rogation Walk 1st May 2016 After a rather cold and wet spell of weather, Rogation Day could have been a washout this year but, thankfully, the afternoon at Burchetts Farm was lovely and warm, with sunshine and blue skies. Clive and Tina made us very welcome and Clive conducted us around the farm. We stopped off in various places to hear about the crops, wildlife and how the farm has developed and changed over the years. After walking along tracks, through meadows and the beautiful bluebell woods, we arrived back at the farm and had a tour of the cow sheds. The cattle, I believe, enjoyed our visit as much as we did! With hymns and prayers we asked the Lord to bless the farm. We also prayed for all who labour to provide our ‘daily bread’, milk and so many products we take for granted as we enjoy God’s provision for our kitchen and table. The walk concluded with a superb cream tea in the Farmhouse garden and with many thanks to our host and hostess. Marion Jenkins

Annual UNLOCK Walk - 23rd April 2016 12 hardy walkers set out on a happy 8.5 mile walk for Unlock on a sunny but very cold day. We did not keep to the pace of the next day's marathon runners and had sadly only used 635 calories by the end. (What it is to have pedometers!!). It was wonderful to walk around the beautiful Olympic Park, by the canal and Hackney Marshes - but a lot of the walk was along rather drab streets. We visited 8 very different churches. From St Francis of Assisi church to the Paragon Chapel we were given a very warm welcome. We met many more walkers and it was a joy to share with those who are serving Jesus in an urban environment. All were multicultural with members from Angola, Nigeria, West Indies, Bulgaria, USA, Australia and many others. As always the walk gave us much to think about. We are so blessed in our beautiful church, village and community but our brothers and sisters in inner city London showed us their joy as they often work on the margins of society bringing love, assistance and hope. A big thank you to everyone who sponsored the walk and helped to raise the magnificent sum of £540 for UNLOCK. It is 29 years since 8 very young walkers started this annual pilgrimage! Next year is 30 – so we want to make it special. Date for your diaries - 29th April 2017!! Judy Moorey 21

Tuesday for seniors and Thursday for juniors (16+) on the village green from 6.30 ish as you will see by the numbers it is becoming a very popular form of the sport. I often see inter club matches going on a training evening but I don’t believe there is any form of a league. They have tournaments in the late summer so plenty of training first. Ken Vickery

RunWisborough a Great Success! The first RunWisborough 5 and 10k was a resounding success with 370 finishes and many more watching and cheering the runners on in the searing heat! In addition, about 150 children enjoyed the childrens’ activities on the Green. We are still working through the finances but it looks like we raised about £5,000 which will go a long way towards the planning costs for the new Pavilion and we’d like to thank everyone from (Continued on page 23)

On that vein a special thanks to Annabelle and Millie who kindly got a hose pipe out and sprayed over heated runners as they came past. Village ‘Moans & Groans’ Page Hi all. I have been wondering for several weeks if I should write a village page with a few monthly notes - Does and Don’ts and Moans and Groans about things that go on in the village and nobody talks about. Firstly I attended the Annual Parish meeting in April along with 5 other members of the public from Wisborough Green! Now either everybody thinks the PC is doing a marvellous job or we just don’t care what is happening in the village. You can go to a parish council meeting and ask questions if you have any but nobody does. Secondly, why do we not cut our hedges and sweep our paths outside our houses? Is it just we are not bothered or is it we don’t really care what our village looks like to visitors? In France, where my brother in law lives, it is a civil duty to sweep in front of your house every week and they all do. It is very difficult to walk along some of the village foot paths if the hedges are not cut back to the back of the path and also very dangerous if walking with children or a pram. Talking about footpaths and Bridleways around the village I have recently managed to roll the main green lanes around the village which are all easy to walk now and a pleasure to see, some have Primroses and Bluebells, one has an Orchid flowering. Do you know that you can go on line and report a pothole at this link?: https://www.westsussex.gov.uk/roads-and-travel/report-a-problem-with-a-roador-pavement/ At the last PC meeting, our District Councillor announced they have £7 million to repair the potholes and paths in West Sussex. Let’s all report at least 2 every week and that way they are bound to repair some. If you have something you want to get off your chest do email me at kenvickery@hotmail.co.uk More info and moans next month. In the meantime, please do get involved and help get our village cleaned up! Ken V 23

Cross Over Group of Churches in Petworth Deanery On Ascension Day, Thursday 5th May at Northchapel Church, where the centenary of the local school was being celebrated within ‘All Things Bright and Beautiful’, their Flower Festival, the commissioning took place for the Cross Over Group of Churches. The Bishop of Horsham, The Rt. Revd. Mark Sowerby, assisted by the Archdeacon of Horsham, The Ven. Fiona Windsor, commissioned Clive; Peter Hayes (Priest-in-Charge) of Northchapel with Ebernoe and Lurgashall; Canon John Green (Priest-inCharge) of Barlavington with Coates and Sutton with Bignor and Colin Datchler (Priest-in-Charge) of Stopham Fittleworth and Mission Priest. This grouping, a ‘District Mission Team’ is a new concept in the Diocese to promote and facilitate Mission and Outreach within all the Parishes and Communities that have been drawn together to form the ‘Cross Over Group of Churches’. What this means in practice, is that each Church has agreed to share its ministry with one another to promote growth: spiritual and numerical, across the District. Our first task is to have an appraisal of what we do, and for what purpose. Colin, our designated ‘Mission Priest’, is already drawing together examples of what works well across the District. So watch this space for future developments, as the COG (Cross Over Group) starts to turn.

Recipe of the Month Portuguese Custard Tarts (BBC Good Food Recipe) I have eaten quite a few of these on my travels last month (May) in Portugal and Spain - they are delicious. I haven't tried making them, but I will do on my return. Hope you enjoy them too. Makes 12 Tartlets Ingredients       

1 whole egg (large) 2 egg yolks (large) 115g golden caster sugar 2 tbsp cornflour 400ml full fat (creamy) milk 2 tsp vanilla extract 1 sheet ready rolled puff pastry

Method 1. Lightly grease a 12 hole muffin tin and pre-heat oven to 200C/180C fan/Gas 6 2. Put egg, yolks, sugar & cornflour in a pan and mix well together then gradually add the milk until mixture is well mixed and smooth. 3. Place pan on medium heat and stir constantly until mixture thickens and comes to the boil. Remove pan from heat and stir in vanilla extract. 4. Put custard in a glass/ceramic bowl to cool and cover with cling film to prevent skin forming. 5. Cut pastry sheet into two pieces and place them on top of each other. Roll the pastry tightly, from the short side, into a log and cut the log into 12 even sized rounds. 6. On a lightly floured board, roll each round into a disc (approx. 10cm) and press the pastry discs into the muffin tin. 7. Spoon in the cooled custard and bake for 20-25mins until golden on top. Leave to cool in the tin for 5mins then move to a cooling rack to finish cooling although they can be eaten warm. Helen V

Wisborough Green History - FROM Apart from the regular users of the workhouse, there were other groups and societies that hired the first and second floors on an occasional basis. The first floor (known as the WI room) was a long hall with a stage at one end that could be hired for meetings and functions, e.g. dances, and as a classroom as described last month. During the Second World War the Ministry of Information used it to show information films that kept the public aware of how the war was going and John and Peter Trestrail organised concerts there during that period. The second floor was used by the Girl Guides for their meetings until the mid-1930s. They then used the Glebe Barn and later still, the scout hut in Harsfold Lane. The school had intentions of using it as a class room during the war but I don't think that this ever happened as the floor was in very poor condition and considered unsafe. Latterly it was only used for the storage of chairs that were used for functions. The use of the third floor (i.e. the attic) is unknown though it was a boys' dormitory in workhouse days. The floors were usually accessed by an external iron staircase at the back that was really the fire escape. During the Second World War, the iron platform outside the second floor was used to look for German aircraft as it had good visibility to the south and east. Finally, some villagers may remember a small building along the Glebe Barn wall from which fish was sold in 1940’s by Laurie and Reg Cheeseman. A village hall had been proposed for some time, certainly from 1930, and a Village Hall Building Fund was established of which A E Lerwill was the chairman. The location for the hall was where Bramshaw House in School Road now stands on land previously owned by Lerwill butchers and from whom the parish council acquired it in 1939. Discussions regarding requirements were started c1930 and designs were invited; the one selected in 1933 was prepared by architects J J Taylor of Hitcham, Suffolk. It was a two storey brick building of a typical 1930s appearance. The attached plans show the front and left side of the proposed hall; apologies for the quality of the plans that have deteriorated in the last 80 years. Funding was always an issue and grants were sought for an estimated cost of £1500, but in 1934 they were still £600 short. In 1935 estimates were invited for construction of the chosen design and builders Wadey and Sons were selected at a cost of £1469. Problems arose regarding drains, provision of road access and the licences for dancing and cinema which delayed progress. Meanwhile costs were escalating such that in 1937 it was decided to pursue a more modest design of hall. New estimates were sought in 1938 that came to £1828 but this dragged on so much that in October 1939, just after the start of the war, it (Continued on page 33)

32

POORHOUSE TO VILLAGE HALL 13 (Continued from page 32)

was agreed that it was very unlikely that the hall would be built in the foreseeable future by which time the current scheme would be obsolete. T he plans gained momentum immediately after the war which resulted in a fund raising committee called the Welcome Home Village Hall Building Committee being established with Sidney Carter as promoter. This was to express gratitude to those who served in the forces. Fund raising gathered around £1500 though this sum may have included monies raised prewar. However the building of a new hall seemed to have lost its impetus. In June 1950, Petworth Rural Council served notice to the parish council that the workhouse flats no longer complied with the requirements of the 1936 Housing Act. The council had no means of finding the £3000 to £4000 estimated cost of the work to modernise the flats and so they decided to accept a closing order on them. As a result and sensing an opportunity, the Village Hall Committee enquired about being able to rent part or whole of the workhouse after the flats were vacated. In 1952 the flats were vacated and the tenants moved to new homes in the newly built Butts Meadow estate. The end room of the westernmost flat became a surgery for Dr Vine and Dr Woods after they moved from the old Handy Shop. The doctors' waiting room extended across the car park entrance; it had a door on its eastern wall and inside were just a bench and, in winter, just a small electric fire. There was little privacy for patients as those waiting could overhear all that was being discussed in the surgery between doctor and patient. A structural survey found that the south wing was unsafe and it was demolished soon after in 1955 leaving only the part that is now the committee room, bar and the maisonette. At the same time, the doctors' waiting room was demolished and the surgery moved to Mead Cottage in The Luth until it closed in the mid-1990s. With the entire workhouse vacant, plans were now prepared for it to become the future village hall. More next issue. Meanwhile, I made a couple of mistakes last time. In 1953 the canteen and staff moved to a new concrete pre-fab building (not a wooden hut) on the site of Bramshaw House. The photo of the child presenting flowers to Mrs Pipe was wrongly titled as she retired in c1966 or soon after (and not in 1945). I have no other information about the photo nor its date though my guess is that it was just before the canteen relocated. Lots of open windows without curtains in the flat above and its open door look very similar to a photo of the empty building taken in 1954 - see next month. Richard B. 33

The Gardener’s Calendar

by Ian Clemens

 Plant out annual summer bedding plants in

borders, containers and hanging baskets now the risk of frost has passed.

 Lift and divide clumps of snowdrops and bluebells once the leaves

start to yellow.

 Pinch out the tips of your fuchsias to encourage a bushy habit and

more flowers.

 Cut back bulb foliage once it has died down naturally.  Plant out tender vegetables like courgette, squash, tomatoes and

sweetcorn now the chance of frost has past.

 Look out for yellowing of autumn planted onion and garlic foliage. This

is a sign that they are ready to harvest.

 Continue to earth up main crop potatoes and think about harvesting

your first earlies (ready 10 weeks after planting)

 Harvest salad crops and sow new every two weeks to ensure a

constant supply of tasty leaves.

 Thin out congested branches on fruit trees for bigger and better

fruits.

 Protect developing fruits from birds and squirrels by netting your

plants.

 Peg down runners on strawberry plants to create more plants for

next year.

Wey & Arun Canal Trust News STROLL TO HELP RESTORE AN HISTORIC CANAL Community groups and charities can raise money for their good causes at the same time as supporting an organisation which is bringing an historic waterway back to life. They are being invited to take part in the Wey & Arun Canal Trust’s annual sponsored walk – keeping half of the amount they raise. This year’s walk, known as the Poddle, is on Sunday, June 5th. Its 12-mile route through some beautiful Surrey and Sussex countryside takes in locations linked with the 200th anniversary of the canal’s opening. The Trust is giving other organisations the opportunity to raise money through a 50/50 sponsorship option. If a team of walkers raises more than £200 sponsorship, a minimum of £20 each, it is happy to split their proceeds equally with a cause of their choosing. “This will benefit groups such as the scouts and guides and other young people’s groups,” said Poddle co-ordinator Margaret Darvill. “They can take advantage of us making all the arrangements, while helping themselves and the trust at the same time.” The walk’s morning section of about 6½ miles is from North Hall in Loxwood, West Sussex to the Three Compasses pub at Alfold in Surrey, where lunch will be provided. The newly combined Arun Navigation and Wey & Arun Junction Canal was officially opened there by Lord Egremont in September 1816. The route takes in the canal from Devil’s Hole Lock, past Gennets Bridge Lock – where walkers might see volunteers at work – to the new Compasses Bridge. It passes through the picturesque Sidney Wood, along parts of the un-restored waterway.

Scout group supporters taking part in 2015 Poddle sponsored walk

Those who would like to do a shorter walk can just join the afternoon 5½ mile section, starting at 1pm from the Three Compasses. The route goes to Alfold village, over farmland and then along the Surrey-Sussex border and back to North Hall for tea and cake. “We, of course, also welcome individuals who want to support the canal restoration to take part, added Mrs Darvill. “Almost anyone can join in, with the proviso that the route includes stiles and some hills so may prove difficult for some.” Individuals and groups can register to join the Poddle at: https://weyarun.org.uk/drupal/ content/2016-poddle. For more information, call Mrs Darvill on 01483 894606 or email her at poddle@weyandarun.co.uk. Supporters who are unable to do the walk could sponsor the Trust’s ‘last man’ walker, volunteer to act as a marshal on the day or man a refreshment point. 39

Wisborough Green Farmers’ and Village Market News

Next Market - Thursday 9th June 2016 Wisborough Green Village Hall 9 am – 12.30 pm “What a surprising and pleasant Market this is. It has such a useful mix of products”. Chatting on, she commented that this Market supplemented the supermarket with local, very high quality food, not forgetting pet food, and useful, original, occasional buys and a resident PC fixer. The last glimpse was of her sitting on the bench by the pond enjoying the sunshine. Could it be that some village people have not popped in because of a preconception of what this Market is like? It is friendly place, an opportunity to build up a feeling of community as in the Village Lunches and Sideshows Festive meal in January. Winner of last Market Free Raffle is Jeremy Naunton, Pulborough. His £10 Market shopping voucher will be there for him to use the next time he visits. Will Writing Week Monday 6th to Friday 10th June 2016 Making a Will is one of the most important things we can do and is often one of the last things we think about. It is a known fact that one third of people in this country who die each year do so without making a Will. There are many reasons why you should make a Will:  A will puts you in control. You choose who will benefit from your Estate and how your possessions will be distributed

    

You can appoint a guardian to look after your children if they are under 18. You appoint people you trust to act as Executors of your Estate. If is far quicker and cheaper to administer an estate where there is a Will. A properly drafted Will can help minimise the amount of inheritance tax paid. By planning ahead you have the peace of mind knowing you have done all you can to make things easier for those you have left behind.

The Dame Vera Lynn Children’s Charity have teamed up with local solicitors who are offering appointments FREE OF CHARGE during Will Writing Week. Instead of a fee they are asking for a donation to Dame Vera Lynn Children’s Charity. Wisborough Green Horticultural Society Everyone is invited to The June Horticultural and Craft Show In the Village Hall on 19th June at 2pm - 5pm and

The Visit to Polesdon Lacey - Tuesday 14th June. Panama hats and triumph at the Plant Sale on the Little Green. Sunshine at last. An enormous thank you to everyone who brought plants and garden sundries and of course the cakes. The brownies were superb. The Jumbo onions were a hit. Yet again the Clemens family team deserve a medal for outstanding performance with plant propagation as does Reg of Dahlia fame. Thank you to everyone who brought something. Thank you Sally for the use of your garage and parking space. We at least know that the sale area is dry underfoot. We made just about the same amount as last May, which will help to pay the expenses of the June Show.

Now to the Show. It is too late to start the growing but not too late to be looking about to see what is looking especially nice and would fit in to a category in the Schedule (in the village shop or village website). Gardeners often feel overcritical of their own plants, but realise that old truth, “Mine are even better than those” when viewing at the Show. Cooking is always done at the last minute, so there is plenty of last minute time left. Let the battle of the rock cakes begin. Show Entry Forms – these are in the Schedule. They need to be completed and popped into the collection box which will be fixed to the white picket fence of Forge Cottage next to the public toilets. This will be put up two weeks before the Show and taken down on the Friday preceding the Show. Entry is closed as from when the box is taken down on Friday evening. Young artists have got two weeks left as well to complete their work. Youngsters are more than welcome to enter ANY OTHER Classes in the Show, so decorate a jam jar and pop some flowers in it or put those mini pizzas in or that sport related selfie.

Our annual visit is to Polesden Lacey and its Garden and grounds. Please ring Kate Steele 01798 813357 to reserve a place. Cost £18. Departs from Three Crowns 9.30am 14th June. Wealden Trefoil Guild Our Guild meetings so far this year have been quite varied. Our February meeting was our AGM when Jackie stood down as Chairman and Ruth Isaacs took on the role once again. In March we welcomed a speaker from the Waste Management department of West Sussex County Council who gave us all a very informative talk on re-cycling and where all of our collections are taken and sorted ready for reusing. In April we all were asked to bring something to our meeting that was precious to us and to talk about it for 5 minutes. What a wide and fascinating range of topics was covered that evening, from jewellery to porcelain, from RAF wings to clothing. All had there poignant connections to their owners and some very moving stories were disclosed that evening. May was our wine tasting evening and that was great fun. We welcomed Mike from the 48

Wealden Trefoil Guild (Cont) (Continued from page 48)

Billingshurst Wine Group who brought a selection for us to taste and he talked to us about the best wines to buy, the taste and bouquet of wines, bottling, storage etc. We all learned something new that evening and had a wonderful time tasting the wines too! In February some of our members joined with others from across our County for the Sussex West Trefoil Guild AGM in Rustington. It was good to meet up with some of our other members and we enjoyed a beautiful tea laid on by the catering team. Over the May Day bank holiday weekend some of the Guild went along to help with the craft activities at the annual Scout and Guide camp held in Petworth Park each year. The weather was glorious and the Scouts and Guides had a wonderful weekend of adventurous activities to enjoy. We look forward to the many outdoor events that we will be attending over the summer months. Visitors and new members are always welcome to come and join us – please contact our Chairman Mrs Ruth Isaacs (01403 785402) Teri Maher

WI Report We had quite a different meeting on the 5 th May. First of all we met upstairs in the Sports Pavilion due to the Village Hall being used as a Polling Station. Then we discussed the two resolutions that have been proposed which will go forward to be voted on at the Annual Meeting in June. The two resolutions were (wait for it!):We call upon HM Government and the NHS to provide facilities to enable carers to stay with people with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia that have been admitted into hospital. The Group couldn’t quite agree on this one so we gave Billingshurst (who will represent us at the Annual Meeting) a discretionary vote. The Second one was:The WI calls on all supermarkets to sign up to a voluntary agreement to avoid food waste, thereby passing surplus food onto charities thus helping to address the issue of increasing food poverty in the UK. We voted FOR this resolution. After our discussions, Joel Gage came to give us a very thought provoking talk about the Charity that he has started after his ‘holiday’ in Leros last September. This holiday has changed his life after he witnessed the plight of Syrian refugees landing on this small, impoverished Greek holiday island. He witnessed men, women and children arriving from unsafe boats with absolutely nothing and since then has formed Leros Solidarity Network which is a charity based in the UK raising funds to provide food, shelter and clothing. It was heart rending. If you need more information then please look at the web site www.lsn-uk.com. I’m sure if you speak to him he will be able to give you more information. Our next meeting is on 2nd June back at the Village Hall when we will learn how to be authors!! Sue Nicholls 01403 700827 Mary Benson (President) 01403 700284 49

CYBER TIPS If it seems…………. Scams can only be profitable to the scammer if people fall for them! That sounds obvious until you fall yourself. Most scams survive because the victim is either frightened or confused by the approach, or attracted by a prize or reward for nothing. I am very aware of the possibility of an approach every time I switch on my computer or answer my phone. I received an email recently purporting to come from ebay where I have occasionally bought and sold. It looked very like confirmation emails I have received in the past, reminding me to send my feed-back about a transaction. This latest missive, though, asked for more information than I have needed to give in the past. It was, of course, an attempt to extract my account details that ebay would already know and would not need, nor ever ask for. We can only reduce scammers’ success by ignoring and/or reporting them.

It probably is! Peter Edmonds
