Pastoral Letter I press on towards the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenwards in Christ Jesus. Philippians 3:14 The F.I.F.A. World Cup is going to Kick Off on 14th June in Russia, with England’s first game on Saturday 16th June. Whether or not you’re a follower of ‘the beautiful game’, there will be plenty of coverage in the media as to the highs and lows of England’s progress. In the history of football clubs in the British Isles, whose beginnings can be traced back to the latter part of the nineteenth century, some were founded by forward-thinking Churches. Their leaders saw the need to provide an alternative from the excesses of drinking alcohol after work on a Saturday lunchtime. Many of today’s clubs can trace their foundation back to the local Parish Church Sports Clubs, like Manchester City, Everton, Southampton and Fulham. This was not just a British phenomenon either. Across the world Christians and Church groups encouraged many young men (and now women) to take up the sport. Its international appeal struck home when my previous Church hosted a number of young people from war torn Iraq to spend time in the U.K. Our young people and our visitors were very hesitant when they first met, but a game of football mixed them all up and they successfully communicated for the rest of their visit! Our scripture verse above is not about football ’per se’, but it does mention, ’goal’. For St. Paul, the goal was living out a life of discipleship in the power of God’s Holy Spirit, 5 seeking to share the ’Good News’ of a victory won, not on sports grounds as in ancient Greece or Rome, but on the Cross of Calvary, by God’s Son Jesus. We all have certain goals in our lives that we are seeking to attain, whether that is at home or work, within our families or the wider community. However, as in football, scoring a goal is something both teams in a match seek to achieve and I’m sure reaching our goal, or goals, can also come with a sense of elation and occasionally relief! So whether you’ll be watching the world Cup, or trying to avoid it, I hope that whatever your goal, or goals are, you will be able to move closer to achieving them. Clive and Marion drawing

Prayer Prayer Group and Quiet Mornings If anyone would like to spend half an hour in fellowship and prayer then they are most welcome on a Tuesday at 4.30pm, when prayers are said for the life of the Parish. Chain of Prayer Worried about a loved one, a friend or yourself and would like prayers to be said by a chain of people? Contact Wendy 700295 or Gillian 700157 and they will start the chain by contacting the person next to them on the list and so it goes all the way round. A copy of the chain is on the notice board at the back of church. Prayer is a powerful and important part of life and one should never under estimate its effect. You don't need to give any details of the problem just ask for prayers to be said and it will happen. Please note that it will be treated with total confidentiality.

Prayers are offered for parishioners who are in special need, especially the sick and frail. Petworth Area Churches Together (PACT) - working together in harmony

The 2018 Spring Lecture was held at St Mary's Parish Church, Petworth on Friday 13th April. Helping the community to usher in the spring season, the speaker Karin Needham gave an informed and in-depth review of the Sat-7 TV ministry in the MiddleEast. There was one surprising statistic: there is a potential audience in the region of 560,000,000. The talk was peppered with case studies of courageous individuals embracing Christ in what looked like some pretty hostile environments. The TV programmes are produced by Middle East people and are not all outwardly Christian - some are for mothers and for children, travel etc. They enable a positive Christian vision for life and society to be shown, and they don't mind challenging prejudice and discrimination. Wisborough Green Scouts The scouts and cubs are leaping ahead with their annual activities. In March all scouts got their RYA 2s for sailing and we’ll be back there again next year for their number 3s. Camp over the early May Bank Holiday weekend at Petworth was a blast, even if the scout leaders ended up needing factor 50 and wide brimmed hats. Next we’re off rock climbing so Bear Grills eat your

heart out. We’ve been raft building and are about to get wet, so if you see bedraggled soaking wet Scouts covered in mud you’ll know what’s happened. More to follow. All the best, 1st wisborough cubs and scouts

Wisborough Green Primary School News With the arrival of the beautiful sunny weather, it means it is that time of year again to enjoy the outdoors, including the fun of the festival. This year is definitely going to top all others, as the circus is coming to Wisborough. We are very excited to welcome Cirque Normandie, our local circus, to celebrate 250 years of clowns, acrobatics and extravaganza! Every child will have an opportunity to learn some circus skills in the ‘Big Top’, taught by the stars of the show themselves. There will be awe, there will be wonder and there will be laughter, so be sure to book your tickets for the greatest show in the village! Shows are on 15 th, 16th and 17th June so visit www.circusnormandie.com – or call – 07508 282582 to book your seats. Tickets are £9 per person, under 2s go free – but must sit on laps. Buggies are not permitted in the big top. Disabled access can be organised by prior arrangement. Nature Notes This lovely picture of an orchid was taken very early one morning by another Sue in our lane! The day after she sent it the council man cut the verges, but the orchids all escaped – possibly because both Sues have nagged him in the past! Whatever the reason – hooray! There’s a big campaign by Plantlife at the moment, reminding us how important for all wildlife these green edges are. So, let’s not shave them too close, and maybe leave some bits alone altogether? Another escapee was this great spotted woodpecker. One of my go-to wildlife gurus, Peter Edmonds, was called to a friend’s conservatory to do the rescue. Peter managed to get him out, but as he said, “not before he’d made a small hole in one of my fingers” (Well, that’s the price a wildlife guru sometimes has to pay). As you can see the bird was a little hot and breathless but unscathed. They are such handsome creatures! We have heard the cuckoo and a distant nightingale, and seen swallows and a few swifts, so summer is almost here. The trees are still in that gorgeous fresh green stage, and the fields are beginning to colour up with wild flowers, campion, buttercups, oxe-eye daisies, vetches, and with many more to come. It all reminds 13 me how lucky we are to live somewhere like this. Yesterday we were in Kent – in more lovely open countryside – with a small crowd of primary school children, their teachers and several hedgehogs. And we all had the pleasure of sharing their release – the hogs not the children! They’d all been found and rescued late last year, all underweight with little chance of survival. Hedgehogs need to be about 600 grams to hibernate successfully. Cared for overwinter, warm and well fed, they were now plump and healthy hogs. Both teachers and children were so enthusiastic and happy to see them go back into the wild. A joyous time! And this event was all down to a devoted couple, Frank and Veronica, and their fantastic team of helpers, at Andrew’s Hedgehog Hospital in Appleby,Lincs. There’s another keen wildlife couple up in Loxwood. They live in a splendid woodland, and we were very kindly invited to see pictures from their nestbox camera. Two tawny owl chicks are doing well so far, and we hope to get a chance to follow their progress. We also saw a fabulous family of kestrels, filmed in that same box in the past. And they gave us tea and cake sitting in a gorgeous big garden - on a lovely sunny afternoon! So that was the price we had to pay! It’s a hard life for us wildlife fans…... Sue J

Village Care Scheme 14

The St. Peter’s Village Care Team meets regularly and its aims are to give help and support to the residents of Wisborough Green in as many ways as possible. This includes visiting people who are housebound, in hospitals or in nursing homes, and comforting those who are suffering from illness, bereavement, loneliness etc. We also provide (through the West Sussex County Council) a free library service for those who are unable to leave their homes. Each team member is responsible for looking after an area of the village, for welcoming new arrivals, and for giving friendly advice. We produce “Welcome to Wisborough Green Cards” containing useful information which are always delivered personally. When appropriate, we send out cards on the first anniversaries of Baptism and Confirmation, and for bereavements. We are always open to suggestions and new ideas to help the community. Village Car Service The Village Car Service, a part of the St Peter’s Village Care Scheme (see above), has now been in operation for over fifteen years. It provides transport to Doctor’s and Dentist’s surgeries and local hospitals on request. There is no charge for this service but donations are invited from passengers as these are ploughed back into the Team’s budget to pay petrol expenses to the volunteer drivers. The service is co-ordinated by Jennie Burr (tel:01403 700607). We have a dedicated team of drivers and are extremely grateful to them all, but always need new recruits to cover busy periods. If anyone is interested in driving for the village please contact Suzanne Mosley on 01403 700946.

Church Sponsored Activities (Cont.) ST PETER’S LUNCHEON CLUB St Peter’s Luncheon Club meets six times a year, on a Thursday, in the Wisborough Green Village Hall and is open to anyone who lives in the village or who worships at St Peter's. A two-course lunch, accompanied by a glass of wine, costs £5.00, payable at the door. Members are reminded by telephone a week or so before the event. Village Hall News At last! I am delighted to confirm that our plans to modernise our village hall have received Planning and Listed Building consent from Chichester DC. As I wrote last month, now will come the difficult bit. Delivering the project for the community. There is a lot of work to be done. So I repeat my plea for your help.

1918-2018 Commemorative Altar Frontal for St. Peter’s Following on from the request a couple of months ago in Ad Vincula, a team of enthusiastic embroiderers has now been assembled to work on creating a new altar frontal for November, when there will be celebrations to mark 100 years since the first World War Armistice Day. A simple design has been decided upon – a central gold cross surrounded by a wreath of poppies, with a scroll either side listing the names of the service men from the village who gave their lives between 1914-1918. Along the base will be the words “We will remember them”. The embroidery will be mounted on a green background, representing the Flanders Fields, as they are today – rich farmland that has evolved from the mud-filled trenches and shell holes of a hundred years ago. Update Boxal Bridge Boxal Bridge was listed Grade II by Historic England on account of its age, its place in a network of local bridges and the fact that it was under threat from West Sussex County Council Highways Department seeking to replace, ie demolish, it. While the bridge is in need of some attention three independent highways engineers state that it could be repaired and last another 160 years….and this could be done for 1/10th of the potential costs of replacing it. In late March – and after the consultation period had elapsed – we learned that WSCC had applied to have this heritage listing overturned and made this application in spite of the petition of 3,376 signatures, the resolution adopted by the CC that the Dept should work closely with the Parish Councils to find an acceptable solution taking the heritage into account, opposition by 3 Parish Councils and the Dept being 19 inundated with objections when their plans became public knowledge last autumn. Kirdford PC commissioned a historic buildings consultant to draw up a report which was sent into the Dept of Digital, Cultural, Media and Sport at the end of April as well as statements from local landowner, Sussex Wildlife Trust, KKWG and local resident. Wisborough Green Sports News Football Club Congratulations to the Football Club for managing to complete all of their games in the season. 1st XI managed 7 games in April and managed to double their points total for the season but, unfortunately, still got relegated to the Championship next season. 2nd XI fared a little better and ended up 7th in their league and will play in it again next season. Cricket Club The 2018 season has started and 1st XI managed to beat Arundel at Arundel in the first game of the season. Annual Unlock Walk - Saturday 28th April 2018 Our annual Unlock walk in London was a cold one. But we were a happy band from St Peter's who walked 8 miles around Tottenham visiting 7 very different churches. As the Unlock literature says 'The world comes together in Tottenham.' More than 200 languages are spoken and it is the most ethnically diverse constituency in London and in Europe. We found most of the churches met in halls – the Freedom's Ark Church in the beautiful Tottenham Town Hall. The churches are working together for their community. They have a programme of help for the mentally ill, innovative and challenging youth work, shelter for the homeless, tireless campaigning against knife and gun crime, children's after school and holiday food clubs and free immigration advice. It is 'the good news of the down to earth Christ' revealed in the love, peace and skills of Christians making a difference. Parts of Tottenham are beautiful. It was wonderful to walk along the tow path of the river and enjoy the gorgeous blossom on the trees in The Lordship recreation ground. It was amazing to visit the first new Anglican building to be erected in 40 years (St Francis at the Engine Room) and the vibrant Church on the Farm on the Broadwater Farm Estate -who asks us all to pray for protection of young people from gang violence. We were all moved by the work of 'The Highway of Holiness' church which is a nightly refuge for 50 homeless men. They bring their mattress into the place of worship to sleep in the warm and are given a good meal in the morning. It is hard for us to comprehend the depth of their need. As always our walk gave us much more than we can give – and a challenge to work together where we are. Thank you for your support through interest, prayer and finance. Judy Moorey

Wisborough Green Division MINIBUS OUTINGS 2018 Visit to Wimbledon On 2nd May the minibus visited the home of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. The weather was typically Wimbledon, a mix of sunshine and showers, but as much of the guided tour took place inside this did not matter. An excellent tour guide took us on a behind-the-scenes tour of this famous sporting venue – the museum was both fascinating and informative on the history of the game; we also visited the Centre Court and the Aorangi Terrace, now affectionately known as Murray Mound or Henman Hill, whilst learning about the rich heritage of Wimbledon. We went inside the press interview room and visited the exclusive Millennium Building usually reserved for only high-profile tennis players. Thank you to Kate for once again organising a great day out. The following outings have been organised for the remainder of 2018. Please call Kate on 701004 if you are interested in participating. Wednesday 4th July 9.30 - Gosport Submarine Museum (£25 pp incl. entry and fare) Travel to Portsmouth Dock Yard and take the water bus to Gosport. RNLI donation & fare) The modern lifeboat station opened in 2010. We will visit the station and its state of the art Tarmar all weather lifeboat. There is a large boat hall, crew training room, drying facilities for wet crew, changing facilities and a viewing platform for the public. Afterwards we will have a pub lunch. Wednesday 5th December evening - Wisley Christmas Glow (£25 pp incl. entry* and fare) Throughout December the gardens will be decorated with Christmas lights etc in the trees and flower beds. You will be able to walk around the gardens and enjoy the Christmas atmosphere. Hopefully we can get a mulled wine and mince pie! (*£10 for RHS members)

‘Dos, Don’ts, Moans & Groans’ Well, the green outfield has been left in a dreadful state by contractors for the Parish Council who is ultimately responsible for its upkeep and maintenance. We have over 200 Village people trying to use the green to play sport in the summer months and it is quite frankly dangerous. The repairs the council has had carried out have been left rough with bare patches all over it and hundreds of pot holes all over the green. The cutting of the green couldn’t happen because of the repairs and it is all being sorted by the Sports clubs direct again this year. (Let’s hope the council accepts the bill.) Second moan this month relates to certain advertisers in the Parish Magazine. If you are advertising a service and somebody phones you please return their call. Same if somebody e-mails you. Please answer even if you’re too busy; it is polite to respond, perhaps suggest alternative. Third Moan this month is about trees in the village centre being cut down and changing the view from the green. The trees behind stonewall cottage have been removed and exposed Butts Gate Works and Wyatt Close to the green like never before. Have you noticed this yet? Hopefully they will be replaced with something better than the large Oaks that have been removed. Final moan this month is going to run on for several months and concerns the footpaths on the A272 through the village centre. If you are not aware they are being resurfaced by West Sussex highways and Balfour Beatty and so far they have only made a terrible mess. Jet washing all of the muck from the pavements up peoples walls and gates. They are doing very little and, in my opinion, very poor preparation for the new topping which they are laying over vegetation at the backs of the paths. They seem to be doing no repairs or levelling to the existing path before covering it in a black resin. Please take pictures before and after and send to West Sussex Highways with your complaints. On a happier note please do get out and walk around the village; there are some beautiful gardens out there if only you walk and find them. FIRST BOATS TRAVEL OVER THE SURREYSUSSEX BORDER ON THE WEY & ARUN CANAL The Surrey/Sussex border near Alfold (Surrey) and Loxwood (Sussex) was the scene of celebrations on 21st April with the completion of Gennets Bridge Lock by volunteers. After the ceremony, small boats were able to navigate across the county border, possibly for the first time since the late 19th century. The Canal Trust has invested about £375,000 and a huge amount of volunteer effort in the lock rebuilding project. Local landowner Nigel Gibbons unveiled a plaque on the bridge and said “When the Canal Trust first approached me, the project manager promised to create a showpiece site. That promise has certainly been fulfilled and the surroundings look magnificent”. The lock is faced with locally made bricks so that its appearance is similar to the original lock that disappeared in the early 20th century. Earlier, volunteer colleagues had presented a card and gifts to Eric Walker, MBE, who retired as project manager earlier this year. As well as rebuilding the lock, the volunteer team constructed a new arched bridge to take the Sussex Border Path across the canal and restored the canal channel northwards towards the Surrey border. After returning from a boat trip across the Surrey border, Chairman Sally Schupke commented “This was a short but historic voyage, marking another milestone in the restoration of the canal link between London and the South Coast”.

COUNTING DOWN TO THE GREA The staff and children of Wisborough Green School are counting down to the exciting day when the circus will roll into town especially for them courtesy of Cirque Normandie’s Circus for Schools Programme! Watch out for the Big Top going up on the Green to mark the start of an extraordinary week. On Wednesday 13th June, the Big Top will be officially ‘blessed’ by our very own, Rev Clive Jenkins. Circus Skills Workshops will be taking place on the Thursday for all of the children at the school, and many from surrounding villages. On Friday we see the first performance from Cirque Normandie, before all the fun of the festival on Saturday, with three further performances on the Saturday and Sunday. ‘Time for God’ All-age Worship Our May Time For God service had a Royal Wedding and Celebration Theme. We had a baptism followed by activities which were: to fly ‘Prince Harry’s helicopter’, make a union flag, to decorate celebration cakes, to make paper chains and colour pictures on the theme. Much fun was had by all.

The next Time For God on 10th June will have a World Cup Theme. “Come on England!” Come along and be part of the ‘St. Peter’s Squad’. There will be plenty of activities to keep you focussed on the day - whether you’re a football fan or prefer to watch Wimbledon there will be lots to interest for all ages. So tell your friends and come along.

St Peter's Mission Group Vicarage Garden Party A wonderful Garden Party was held Friday 11 May in the Vicarage garden in Wisborough Green. Over 100 people attended and enjoyed a cream tea, with generous portions of cake and plenty of cups of tea.

Joel Gage was on hand to update us on what was happening in Greece with the Aegean Solidarity Network and there were leaflets explaining the work of the other two charities represented - Chichester Diocesan Family Support Work in Sussex and the work of Youth With A Mission in Uganda. A fantastic ÂŁ1200 was raised to be split between the three charities. Many thanks to everybody who came and gave most generously. Recipe of the Month WARM PLUM TOMATO & FETA GALETTES This month, I’ve chosen this simple but appetizing dish, which I’ve made as a dinner party starter but could be a light lunch option. You could always make the ingredients go a little bit further by decreasing the size of the ‘round’; I’ve used a saucer instead of a side plate before.

Ingredients      

1 x 340g pack fresh puff pastry 4 tbsp sun-dried tomato paste 6 plum tomatoes 100g/3.5 oz feta cheese, cut into cubes 4 tbsp pesto Salad leaves to serve

Method 1. On a lightly floured surface, roll out the pastry thinly then, using a side plate as a guide, cut out 4 x 15cm (6”) rounds. Set on a lightly-oiled baking tray and chill for 10-15 minutes. Preheat the oven to 220 C/425 F/Gas Mark 7. Cook the pastry rounds at the top of the oven for 15 minutes until golden. Remove and allow to cool. 2. Spread 1 tbsp of the tomato paste evenly on each round of pastry. Slice the tomatoes and arrange in a circular fashion, then arrange the feta cubes on top of the tomatoes. 3. Return the galettes to the oven and cook for a further 10 minutes. 4. Serve immediately, garnished with the pesto and salad leaves. (Recipe Courtesy of Tesco Recipe Magazine ) Judie Donovan

Wisborough Green History - Ministry of Infor The Ministry of Information was a government department set up at the outbreak of the Second World War for the purpose of publicity and propaganda. The functions covered news and press censorship, domestic propaganda, home publicity and training information for the forces. The first of these involved working with the services to obtain information that would keep the public informed in such a way to boost morale, for example, describing the numbers of aircraft involved in raids. It also encouraged journalists to accompany troops in their campaigns, starting with North Africa, so that victories, however small, could inspire the public. The news appeared in the daily newspapers and in films shown in cinemas throughout the country. Some of the films were of military action whilst others showed how the public was being affected, e.g. struggling against the elements in the severe winter of 1939-40 or providing practical war advice, e.g. school children practising for an air raid. Domestic propaganda mainly consisted of the now familiar 'Keep Calm and Carry On' type of poster. There were hundreds of designs with themes to educate the public such as â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Careless Talk Costs Livesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; and 'Keep Mum, She's not so Dumb' and others designed to inspire with dramatic pictures of the British army, navy and air force successfully attacking Axis forces. Some rural areas were quite distant from urban cinemas and so large touring cinema vans travelled the country. Each vehicle had a large flat screen at the rear that was viewable when the back doors were opened. These films enabled the public to gather behind to watch the latest war news. These mobile cinemas visited Wisborough during 36 the war years; parking on the green to show the latest news films. I hope to give further details in an article about the care of the population during the war years. The MOI also produced specialised films for the services including the Home Guard. A film was made for the West Sussex Home Guard that included The Wrong and Right way of handling with situations such as Dealing with Fifth Columnists, Stopping a Motor Car and Dealing with Paratroops. The second of these was filmed in Wisborough Green in around 1941. The location was Kirdford Road just past the crossroads; in this, a group of Home Guard soldiers are shown the wrong and right ways of stopping a car that seems suspicious. The car, probably a Standard 8, turns out to have a hidden passenger who, if the soldiers handle the situation wrongly, shoots the soldiers. Meanwhile The Cricketers, Ivy Cottages (where Mulberry now stands) and White House (though not so white) are visible in the background as are curious villagers.

There But Not There Wisborough Green is proud to be a Pathfinder Parish supporting ‘There But Not There’, the 2018 nationwide Armistice project for the charity Remembered: therebutnotthere.org.uk ‘There But Not There will be the defining centenary commemoration of the end of the 1914-1918 war, installed where the men and women came from across the country, back in the communities they left behind.’ There were 21 men who did not return to Wisborough Green and Loxwood (one ward at that time) and their names are listed on the War Memorial. We will remember these men from mid-September until November in St Peter ad Vincula church. Each man will be represented by a Perspex silhouette and nameplate, sitting in church as they may well have, as part of the congregation. You will be encouraged to sit with our fallen, remember and reflect on their courage and ultimate sacrifice. Plans are being made and details will be published shortly; at this stage we felt it appropriate to give family members of our fallen the first opportunity to sponsor their relative’s silhouette and name block for £50. Please do spread the word if you know of family who have now left the village. The Parish Council and the History Society will publish a booklet giving as much detail as can be found on those who died, so if you were able to provide any background information, about their lives in Wisborough Green or Loxwood, it would be most welcome. Local Club and Society News Wisborough Green Short Mat Bowls Club The Club’s Annual Pairs Competition on Monday 23rd April, was well attended with 10 teams taking part. The teams split into two groups with the top team from each group going through to Finals Day on the 3rd September. The teams all played 4 games of 8 ends, the games were all generally competitive with no teams remaining unbeaten. Congratulations go to Monica Enticknap and Jean Head winning group 1 with 6pts +27 and Dave Herbert and Linda Jones winning group 2 with 6pts +5. Wisborough Green Spitfire Simulator Club Why not join the Spitfire Simulator Club? The prime purpose of our simulator project is to raise money for the RAF Benevolent Fund and to that end, simulator flights are normally charged for. However, with the Simulator Club, members make a small donation to the RAFBF (£5 per year) and their name goes into a hat every month and the winner gets a flight for free. Wisborough Green Horticultural Society June Show - Sunday 17th June 2pm Wisborough Green Village Hall Schedules are available at the village shop or online on the Wisborough Green village website: www.wisboroughgreen.org/horticultural-society/ Do have a look at the classes and hopefully enter – we do want to put on a good show! Ensure your entry forms are put in the special box outside Forge Cottage (next to the public toilets) by the evening of Friday 15th. Teas are available all afternoon and the cups and prizes will be presented at 4.15pm. Hopefully we will see you there! The plant sale went very well and raised over £600 towards funds. It was a corker of a day and at 2pm, sharp, there was a surge of punters!  Plant out annual summer bedding plants in boarders, containers and hanging baskets now the risk of frost has passed.  Lift and divide clumps of snowdrops and bluebells once the leaves start to yellow.  Pinch out the tips of your fuchsias to encourage a bushy habit and more flowers.  Cut back bulb foliage once it has died down naturally.  Plant out tender vegetables like courgette, squash, tomatoes and sweetcorn now the chance of frost has past.  Look out for yellowing of autumn planted onion and garlic foliage. This is a sign that they are ready to harvest.  Continue to earth up main crop potatoes and think about harvesting your first earlies (ready 10 weeks after planting)  Harvest salad crops and sow new every two weeks to ensure a constant supply of tasty leaves.  Thin out congested branches on fruit trees for bigger and better fruits.  Protect developing fruits from birds and squirrels by netting your plants.  Peg down runners on strawberry plants to create more plants for next year.

Mary Lindfield & Lil Elliott – Honorary Patron Awards Our market was set up 16 years ago by a group of community minded volunteers with the dream of building community cohesion and bringing high quality produce into the village from small, independent local suppliers and producers. Until recently two of those founders, Mary Lindfield and Lil Elliott remained active in running the market. Lil retired from active involvement, due to ill health, but is pleased to remain a committee member. Mary decided to step down from the committee a couple of months ago to spend more time with her close family, and take a well-earned rest! Their contribution to the market and the community cannot be underestimated. They really have been pillars of the village for many years. At our Open Meeting on the 20th April, both Mary and Lil were made Honorary Patrons of the Market, in recognition of their outstanding contributions and achievements. The committee and Keith Hutchinson (director of market sponsor Fowlers Estate Agents), presented Mary with a wonderful bouquet of flowers, made by our market regular Cathy Streeter of Sussex Roses, and a lovely hand drawn and painted certificate by local artist Annette Olney. Unfortunately, Lil was unable to attend and so committee members Aija Hamilton, Sally Marsh and Ray Vernalls, made a presentation to her at her home the following day. Both were thrilled with their awards and passed on their sincere thanks.

May Market: The sun was shining, as it seems to on market days, but the number of visitors was slightly down this month, though many of the stallholders reported good sales. Ian Clemens was with us again with his home grown veg plants and very nearly sold out! We were very pleased to see Nicki Ramplin, Issie Loves Books, return after a long absence and we hope to see her again. New comers JubyLee Bakes, Katie Wells and Ascog Wool brought new interest to the market and the Rev Clive Jenkins’ wife Marion took a stall to promote the WG Open Gardens event. June Market: The June market should be one not to miss, with all the regular stalls plus the interesting new ones, also, pupils from WG Primary School will be with us again. Do come along and browse or just sit with a coffee (and a piece of delicious Macmillan cake) and watch the world (or at least Wisborough Green) go by, you never know who you might bump into. WI Report At our WI Meeting on the 3rd of May we discussed the resolution: ‘Mental Health Matters’. The NFWI urges all WI members to recognise the importance of parity between mental health and physical health and take action to make it as acceptable to talk about mental health issues as much as physical health issues, and to lobby government for better support for mental illness. This is the resolution that will be put to the Annual Meeting in Cardiff in June. Sue Carter, one of the West Sussex Advisors came to talk us through the many aspects relating to this resolution and a very good discussion followed. The meeting voted to support this resolution and Faye Williams, our representative from Wisborough Green will vote on our behalf. At our June meeting on the 7th, Helen Prosper will come and talk about the ‘Myth of Eating 5-a-day’. We look forward to seeing you at this meeting. All potential members are welcome. Weather Watch Wisborough Green rainfall for April was 78mm (last year 8mm – 10 yr average 48mm). So if you thought it was wet - it was a very wet April!

BUT we did have a warm spell in the month where the mercury rose to 29.1°C in London – the warmest April day since 2001. Coldest spot was April 1st minus 8.8°C at Tulloch Bridge in Invernesshire. Cooler weather and then that warmth meant spring happened with a bang! As I write, May so far has been good but no doubt if there is no rain we will soon be hoping for some – our clay soil goes solid very quickly! Weathervane

National Rural Crime Survey It’s three years since the last National Rural Crime Survey revealed the huge cost of crime to rural communities – both financial and in terms of public confidence and fear of crime. The National Rural Crime Network produced a series of recommendations and, in many areas – including Sussex – the police took steps to improve matters. Now it’s time to find out what’s changed. Do you think rural crime has gone up or down in Sussex? Do you feel safer? What’s your view of the police in your community? This year’s survey went live on April 17, and I urge anyone who lives, works or visits our rural communities to respond and have their voice heard. In late 2017, Sussex Police appointed Temporary Superintendent Emma Brice and Sergeant Tom Carter as dedicated leads for rural crime, to address the vulnerabilities and crime types which are specific to rural areas. We know that there are certain types of crime and areas of vulnerability which impact rural communities and businesses differently from those in urban areas. Alongside other measures, the responses to this survey will help to ensure that Sussex Police meets the needs of our rural communities. One of the focuses of this year’s survey is whether rural crime continues to be 51 underreported. Three years ago, one in four people who responded to the survey nationally said they didn’t report the last crime they’d been a victim of because they didn’t see the point. This is an uncomfortable thing to hear, for all those involved in protecting rural areas, so it’s important we ask these questions again and find out whether people are more willing to report crime and if they feel safer. It’s vital that the voice of rural communities is heard by those who can make a difference – from the Police to Government. Please have your say and help us build a clear picture of crime in rural Sussex and to understand the impact it has where you live or work.
