Pastoral Letter You may recall an amazing feat of airmanship on 15th January 2009, when the pilot of U.S. Airways flight 1549 landed the Airbus A320 on the Hudson River after taking off from New York’s La Guardia Airport. Chesley ‘Sully’ Sullenberger, the pilot, was able to use his skills and experience to glide the aircraft onto the river after hitting a flock of geese. It was a miracle that no one was killed. The pilot himself attributed the amazing landing also to the fact that it was a cloudless sky, there was very little wind, no ice on the river and very few boats. It would be almost impossible to replicate that very unusual situation on that January day. On that first Easter, when it was still dark, some of the female disciples of Jesus had decided to go to his tomb and anoint his body for burial after the crucifixion on Friday. However, there were to be Roman guards posted, a stone rolled across the entrance, and the probability that the women would be beaten and abused for attempting such a foolish act. Yet the guards were asleep and the stone rolled clear of the entrance! When Mary Magdalene, who was distraught after finding no body in the tomb, asked a person she thought was the gardener, “Tell me please, where you have put the body, and I will get him.” (John 20:15), the gardener said her name, “Mary”, she knew it was Jesus! Mary Magdalene now went and told Jesus’ apostles the Good News, that she had seen the Lord. This now began an amazing sequence of events that would transform the lives of these ordinary men and women, into the ones who would be empowered by God’s Holy Spirit to share the life changing experience of meeting with Jesus. Corrie ten Boon, a Dutch Christian who survived the experience of a Nazi concentration camp in World War Two said, “Never be afraid to trust an unknown future to a known God.” Many on flight 1549 that day, thought they would not survive, they believed their future and fate were sealed. None of us knows what tomorrow may bring. Mary and her companions expected to pray prayers of mourning over a dead corpse, yet encountered the living Lord who saves. Easter is God’s promise that tomorrow has already dawned for those who trust in Him. Have a Happy and Joyous Easter. Clive and Marion

From the Editor Welcome to the March 2016 edition of Ad Vincula. We were in Barbados recently on holiday and, although we have been a few times before and always stayed in the same location, it only dawned on us this time that we were staying in the Parish of St Peter! I thought you might be interested to learn a little bit about another St Peter’s Parish Church below. On Friday 12 February, we celebrated the life of June Clark in the funeral service held in St Peter ad Vincula. I cannot remember the church ever being as full. There were people standing in every possible corner and was a testimony to the love and respect felt for June. I hope to have an obituary in a future edition. In addition to the usual articles this month, we have a moving story about Suzanne’s dog, Snoop (p12), a look at the “Time for God” services (p19), some news about the Zoar Chapel and information about the Parish Giving Scheme (p21) amongst others. Finally, I have had a very good response to my request for potential magazine cover photos and the first one appears on this month’s cover. Please keep them coming as I will need photos suitable for different months of the year. Some, unfortunately, were too low a resolution to be used. Whatever device you use to take photographs, please ensure the picture quality setting is set to maximum size and finest quality. Best Wishes, Roland Zilz This magazine can also be viewed on line at: http://www.wisboroughgreenparishchurch.org.uk/index.php/parish-magazine
St Peters Parish Church, Barbados Although Barbados is a relatively small island (21 miles long by 14 miles wide), there are over 100 religious groups and their places of worship range from the majestic coral stone structures to the simple chattel house. The bulk of the early white settlers were Anglican and this became the faith of most Black Barbadians. St Peter’s Parish Church is one of the oldest Anglican churches. A church, possibly a timber structure, was built in 1629 as the parish church for the north. The second building was built in 1665 and rebuilt in 1837 in an essential early Georgian style. In 1980, a fire destroyed the church leaving the walls and tower and damaging the original east window, pulpit and font, but the church was rebuilt in 1983 using the original walls. Roland Zilz 9

Wisborough Green Primary School News It seems hard to believe we have completed half of the school year already and our plans for the next half of the year continue to be full of fun learning opportunities for the children. It has been lovely to welcome so many parents and carers to our class assemblies this half term which have all been thoroughly enjoyable. There have been Chinese dragons, ukuleles, poetry, maths rhymes, problem solving and a touch of Greek history to name a few things presented. A new visitor was welcomed to school in the last week of term and the children were excited to introduce Elliot the dragon to me. The eggs finally hatched in the classroom and Elliot made many new friends. Our adventures continue after half term with a banquet for the Royal Prince to be planned and a visit to Leeds Castle. 'Going Green' has been an ongoing project for our Wisborough Eco Warriors too and our Eco-Greenhouse build has started. We are so lucky to have a brilliant team of parents who have designed and started to build a plastic bottle greenhouse. Securing sponsorship from Covers Timber and Building Merchants has been fantastic as they supplied us with the wood and materials to build the frame. Our plans are to develop a growing and cooking programme for all the children to be part of so we look forward to seeing this project blossom further! As the population of the school has grown considerably over the past few years we are finding there are increasing issues with the traffic around the school in the mornings and at the end of the day. A 'Travel Committee' has been formed to develop plans to improve the situation. We are looking in to the possibility of having a 'Lollypop Person' to help with crossing Durbans Road at both ends of the day. This would hopefully help encourage more families to walk to school. If you are interested in contributing any ideas to the group then please contact the school office on 01403 700280. Next term we are looking forward to installing our new library and developing the perfect place to relax and enjoy reading. Our brilliant PTA have raised an amazing amount to fund the project and I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone for supporting the events to raise such an amazing amount. We promise to bring you more exciting news from WGPS next term but in the meantime please watch out for any unusual low flying, fire breathing creatures around the village! Warm regards, Amanda Harrison Head Teacher 01403 700280
From the Registers (January) Baptisms: We welcome into the Lord’s Family Nathaniel Meanock, baptised on Sunday 24th January 2016 at St. Peter’s Funerals:
We give thanks for the life of Helen Blatch, whose funeral took place on Thursday 21st January 2016 at St Peter’s. 11
Goodbye Snoop The first time I met him he rolled on his back exposing his tummy looked me in the eyes and said I love you, how can you not love me too? There was no going back. The vet thought he was about 3years old. I soon discovered Snoop’s (he came with the name!) gentle, biddable nature. Happy, uncomplicated, loyal, not a dog to write home about you might say, and yet, .......the memories. On many adventures together, walking the South Downs, with other doggie friends, he had only a mild interest in sheep, but would walk through a field of them to heel, off his lead. I had not trained him. His natural overbiding passion, discounting food and his ball, was to please and be loved. Being on my own I felt so blessed to have this friend to share my life with, made so easy by his never running off in the manner of many terriers, but always keeping me in sight, and coming on call. He just wanted to be close. Chris and Snoop became best friends. Ears pricked, Snoop always recognising the sound of his car turning in at the top of the lane, as he sat waiting by the door for his master’s return. Snuggling between us on the sofa at night never came soon enough for him. Snoop adored his ball, but would always bring it back to drop at Chris’ feet, until he became older and too tired for more and would hold onto it and wander back over the green for home. He loved camping, and the minute we started to pack our van would sit inside not budging till our adventure began and he could relax and curl up in his bed between us. Snoop adored the beach, it beckoned him as a child, as he raced across the sand, ears pricked, towards the sea splashing through the waves after his beloved ball, exuding the joy of being alive. It lifted our hearts to see him. Grandchildren came along, and Snoop grew with them, accepting second place, as long as he was included, could join in the story on the sofa, help build the bricks, cavort and play games on the green too. He was probably about 11 or 12 years old when all too suddenly it was over for him. Our home feels so different now. Snoop, I believe, was a gift. Undeserved, and special. He taught us a lot about life: devotion, loyalty, simplicity, joy, purity, a kind of innocence and trust. I often told Snoop he was the best white dog in the whole wide world. Well I believe he is now in heaven, where I suspect there are many many more. Suzanne Mosley 12
WOMEN'S WORLD DAY of PRAYER Friday 4th March at 7.30pm Kirdford Chapel, Plaistow Road, Kirdford Women’s World Day of Prayer is an international, ecumenical, prayer movement that invites women, from a different part of the world each year, to prepare a worship service through which their hopes and fears for their country may be brought before the whole world in prayer. On Friday 4 March an estimated 3 million people in over 170 countries and islands will gather to observe the day of prayer, using an order of service written by Christian women in Cuba and translated into over 60 languages and 1000 dialects. In the British Isles alone over 6,000 services will be held. The day begins as the sun rises over the island of Samoa and continues until it sets off the coast of American Samoa, some 35 hours later. The theme ‘Receive children. Receive me’ reflects St Mark’s Gospel, chapter 10 verses 13-16, which is the focus of the service and a reminder that everyone is a child of God and equally worthy of our love and respect. The Republic of Cuba is the largest Caribbean island, located at the entrance of the Gulf of Mexico and called ‘the Key to the Gulf’. Politically at odds with the USA, Cuba suffered greatly due to the economic embargo imposed upon it in 1960 but has found strength within itself to move on and overcome many of its problems. This is not a day of prayer just for women everyone is welcome to attend the service.

Nature Notes This month’s Notes have kindly been provided by Peter Edmonds due to Sue Jameson’s heavy work commitments currently. Ed Hilary and I paid a visit to Pulborough Brooks the other day. It was a beautiful afternoon and the sunlight was just perfect as we settled down in Nettley’s Hide with a view across the reserve to the north. The water level was high so many birds were feeding close by, and there were truly thousands of them, mostly ducks and waders of every kind. To the left of the hide there is a large willow tree, favourite perch of raptors, in particular the spectacular Peregrine, the fastest living creature on earth. The view from there must be very exciting if you are a bird of prey. We were about to leave the hide when about 1000 Black-tailed Godwits rose suddenly, signalling trouble. In came a juvenile female Peregrine exercising her right to a meal. With one extended reach of her talons, she took a Godwit right in front of us and settled to eat not 200 metres from the hide. As she fed she was continually harried by two jealous crows until after about 10 minutes she flew off with her prey. A really magic moment! The Godwits continued to mumurate for some time flashing their brown and white winter colours in the bright sunshine. The collective noun, incidentally, for these resident waders is “prayer”. The name is from Old English meaning Good Creature, acknowledging that it once made a popular dish! What an extraordinary winter we are experiencing! Some spectacular weather, sadly causing heartbreaking problems in the north of the country. Daffodils before Christmas, blackbirds and sparrows nesting early, primroses and bluebells out in January. Thankfully record temperatures are helping to keep our fuel bills down. But then, have you noted that snowdrops are sticking to their traditional schedule? The warm weather has brought forth early blossom and many delicate plants continued to flourish until a couple of hard frosts put paid to their brave endurance. My guess is, though, that unless we get any really severe cold over the next few weeks, when the real Spring arrives, everything will soon be back to normal. And to cap it all, today, for the very first time, we welcomed a Firecrest to our garden, the 57th species to have visited us in 43 years! Looking forward to reading Sue’s column next time. Black-tailed Godwit

The Gardener’s Calendar

Finish cutting back any dead foliage left on your perennials
and ornamental grasses to make way for new growth.
Prune overwintered fuchsias back to one or two buds on each shoot. Deadhead daffodils as the flowers finish and let the foliage die back
naturally.
Dead-head Hydrangeas before new growth appears. Cut off the old leaves of Hellebores to remove any foliar diseases and
make the spring flowers more visible.
Towards the end of the month plant your chitted early potatoes
outside in the ground.
Plant onions, shallots and garlic provided the soil isn't frozen or
waterlogged. Alternatively plant into individual pots for transplanting outdoors later on when soil conditions are more favourable.
Start to sow vegetable seeds such as carrots, radishes and lettuce in
greenhouse borders or outside under cloches.
Plant fruit trees and raspberry canes now. Cut autumn-fruiting raspberry canes to the ground to stimulate new
cane growth. Cut the tips of summer-fruiting raspberry canes that have grown beyond the top of their supports; cut just above a bud.
Protect the blossoms of apricots, peaches and nectarines from frost
with horticultural fleece.
Mulch rhubarb with a thick layer of well-rotted manure to keep it
healthy and reduce moisture loss through the soil. Take care not to cover the crown. You can also plant fresh rhubarb crowns now.
Cover your strawberries with a cloche to encourage earlier fruiting.

Time for God - Valentine Special Time for God is a service on the second Sunday morning of each month to engage with those who are not used to the traditional forms of worship that we offer here at St. Peter’s. It is hoped that this service will expand and develop so that all ages will enjoy exploring the joy of what it means to be a Christian. Surprises were promised for this service and were delivered to old and young alike! Dan and Nina delighted everyone with juggling and balloon modelling. There was painted hand printing, sugar roses and hearts to create and take home, or place on the cake to be eaten at the end of the service. Valentine cards to make and a ‘Valentine’ banner focussed our attention on how much God loves us through the verse from John 3:16.
Time for God on Sunday 13th March promises more activities for all ages to help us focus on and understand the events of Palm Sunday which is the following week. Clive & Marion 19

Zoar Chapel, Wisborough Green Saturday the 5th February saw ZOAR CHAPEL very full with seats occupied in the balcony, this was due to the invitation of Pastor Chase Whitten, who is soon hoping to take over the Chapel and occupy the Chapel House with his lovely wife Joy, Personal invitations were delivered by hand to just about every house in Wisborough Green. Chase and Joy have already been accepted by visitors to the luncheon held on Thursday 21st January in the village hall, and Chase hopes to work happily with the Rev. Clive Jenkins in conjunction with the church. The entertainment provided by the young choir was a delight to listen to and we thank them most sincerely, and hope they will come again. Tea biscuits and apple pies were offered afterwards. We wish Chase and Joy every happiness in their future at Wisborough Green. Dudley Conway
Parish Giving Scheme Following my note in the November issue of Ad Vincula I have obtained a supply of the necessary forms to be able to contribute to the Parish Giving Scheme (PGS) which are on the table at the back of the church. If you already contribute through a direct debit (DD) and you wish to join PGS you can fill out the form and when active cancel your existing DD. If you do not currently contribute through DD and would like to do so please also take a form. There are also booklets with the forms which clearly explain the scheme. I would be pleased to answer any questions you may have about the scheme. St Peter's, the Diocese and the National Church depend on the generosity of its parishioners like you to share our faith and serve our community. As well as our own Parish needs, St Peter's supports programmes which benefit the community at large in which we are able to share with it our fellowship and help to serve it's concerns and needs. Thank you for your continued vital financial support. Tony Cook, PCC Treasurer 01403 785435

Recipe of the Month Bun & butter pudding Like classic bread and butter pudding? Try this twist that uses hot cross buns instead Ingredients 300ml pot double cream 600ml milk 4 eggs 100g golden caster sugar 1½ tsp vanilla essence 8 hot cross buns 40g soft butter 100g marzipan, cubed 3 tbsp chunky marmalade icing sugar, for dusting Method 1. Heat oven to 170C/150C fan / gas 3. Warm the cream and milk in a pan over a gentle heat. Whisk the eggs, sugar and vanilla together with a fork in a large bowl, then gradually add the warm cream mixture. 2. Halve the buns and spread with the butter. Arrange in a large shallow ovenproof dish (approx 25 x 32cm), dot with the marzipan and brush the marmalade on top. 3. Pour over the cream mixture and set aside to soak for 15 mins. Press the buns down into the custard mixture as they soften. 4. Bake for 50 mins until set, then remove and allow to stand for 10 mins. Dust lightly with icing sugar and serve while still warm. You can make this pud a day ahead. Warm it gently in the just-turned-off oven covered with foil, while you eat your Sunday roast. Helen V

Wisborough Green History - FROM The workhouse continued its operation throughout the 19th century. Unfortunately information of the period post 1834 is scarcer than earlier and there're only a few pieces of information to go on. The Union was expanded in 1869 to include the workhouses in Barlavington, Bignor, Burton, Bury, North Chapel, Coates, Duncton, Egdean, Fittleworth, Stopham and Sutton. The number of inmates gradually declined. The 1851 census showed that there were 67 children living there. By 1871 the number had dropped to 30. The details of the 1881 census showed that there were 27 residents in the workhouse. These were the master Thomas Melville aged 66 and his wife Mary aged 44. There were three staff employed; these were Harriet Mann an unmarried imbecile aged 21 who was employed as a domestic cleaner, Eliza Phayre aged 26, also an unmarried imbecile who was employed as a domestic scrubber and Elizabeth Puttock aged 76 who was unmarried and deaf and who was employed as a needlewoman. The other inmates were just 22 children whose ages ranged from 4 to 16, of whom 14 were boys. The workhouse must have seemed rather empty as Kelly's Directory of 1887 states that Wisborough Green workhouse could house 150 inmates. At some stage after 1881 the workhouse ceased to accommodate just children as it is known that in 1910 there were adults of both sexes living there. Fortunately we know how the accommodation was arranged. The ground floor of the south wing had (starting from the north end) a board-room, and two school rooms, the men's dormitory was on the first floor and the women's was on the second floor. The third, i.e. the top floor with dormer windows that was built into the roof space, seems to have been unoccupied. These floors were accessed by a central staircase that started roughly where the bar is located. There was an outside staircase on the eastern wall for emergencies. Children, if only the offspring of the adult inmates, must have been housed somewhere, though I have no idea where. I have attached a photo showing the south wing taken from the churchyard shortly before its demolition in 1955. The older (and still extant) portion was on three floors, though today it appears to be (Continued on page 31)
30
POORHOUSE TO VILLAGE HALL 10 (Continued from page 30)
only one. Starting from the west wing there was a wash-house (now the Vine Room), the Master's room, the main hall and the kitchen. The dormitories were on the first and second floors and access was gained by an internal staircase at the western end as well as an external staircase on the south side. I have a list of the 27 rooms in the whole building, but frustratingly there's no indication of their location! Among them are some interestingly named rooms, viz. Dead Room, Mad Room, Women's Room, Apple Room and a room curiously named the Room Opposite. Their usage is usually apparent from their names; living next the dead or mad shows how sanguine people were over a hundred years ago. The lot of workhouse inmates improved throughout the nineteenth century. In the matter of diet so much so that In 1901, an official workhouse cookery book was produced by the National Training School of Cookery. It included dishes such as batter and bread puddings, dumplings, haricot, lentil and pea soups, gruel, pease pudding, pasties, fish, potato and sea pies, shepherd’s pie, plain and seed cake and many different types of pudding, fruit, rice, roly-poly, sage and semolina - all a lot more substantial than current eating styles. Earlier, inmates typically slept in simple wooden or metal framed beds with straw mattresses and covers although blankets and sheets were introduced from the midnineteenth century. Again, earlier, the inmates' toilet facilities were a simple privy that was a cess-pit with a simple cover having a hole in it on which to sit. Dormitories were provided with chamber pots or, after 1860, earth closets that were boxes containing dry soil which could afterwards be used as fertiliser. Use as a workhouse ceased around the time of the First World War. During this time German prisoners of war and their guards were housed in the building though there's no record of how many there were and where they were billeted. It's also not known if their imprisonment was concurrent with any poor inmates still living there. The reduced numbers of poor inmates would certainly have provided plenty of room for the PoWs. They worked on the land where there was a shortage of male workers due to the callup even though the growing emancipation of women was resulting in some of them being drafted to working on farms. The PoWs were taken in pairs to their place of work either under the control of a guard or a responsible adult who had to sign for them (see Bill Puttock's account in the September issue) and marched back to the workhouse at night. Although there were some accounts of resistance or even violence by the PoWs locally in the two world wars, I've not heard of any in Wisborough. The period immediately after the war is not very well documented. It was no longer occupied so stood empty for the first time in two hundred years. Things began to change; the WI started using the first floor of the south wing for their meetings soon after they were formed in 1918 and they continued using the room that became known by everyone as the Women’s Institute Room in the twenties and thirties until that part of the building was condemned in 1953. In 1920, more dramatically, the parish council became involved and planned other uses for the building. More next month. Richard B. 31

Minibus Theatre Trip
Saturday 16th April (4.00pm matinee performance) at The Mill Studio, Yvonne Arnaud Theatre, Guildford We shall be taking the Minibus to this performance of ‘Quartermaine’s Terms’ by Simon Gray Set in the 1960’s, Simon Gray’s quintessentially British drama is a sparklingly witty but ultimately moving account of several years in the lives of seven teachers at a small school in Cambridge which teaches English to foreigners. Never has the celebrated author been more amusing and more touching than in this thoroughly delightful portrait of a mediocre but lovable English schoolteacher St. John Quartermaine and his fellow faculty members. ‘….though the jokes are excellent, the piece cuts deep.’ (Daily Telegraph) Directed by: David Hemsley-Brown with: Caroline Dooley, Paul Halliwell, Polly King, Nick Lund, Richard Parish, Derek Watts and David Webb Tickets for the performance are £15.00 and the Minibus fare will be £5.00 Please ring: RICHARD PARISH (01403 700628) as soon as possible to book both your ticket and your seat on the bus 33

Wisborough Green Short Mat Bowls Club Firstly I am pleased to say we are still going from strength to strength as a club with the playing membership now rising to 28. We are also in the process of confirming our affiliation to the West Sussex County Short Mat Bowls Association and the English Short Mat Bowls Association, this will enable us to play in County and National competitions. We have had four matches since I last wrote, the first was home against Pulborough with Jane Adsett, Marilyn Knight, Shirley Bundy and Bernard Adsett winning 24 - 9 on mat 1. Then on mat 2, Evelyn Ringrose, Pauline Shipway, Tony Broughton and Reg Snelgar lost 11 - 20, even so we still won the match by 4 shots overall. The next match was home to a strong Lavant side, on mat 1 Jane Adsett, David Luxford, Bernard Adsett and Monica Enticknap lost 13 - 19, with Pauline Shipway, Shirley Bundy, George Shipway and Reg Snelgar having a good win on mat 2 giving us a 1 shot win overall. Next we welcomed a new team called Reprobates with Jane Adsett, Shirley Bundy, David Luxford and Monica Enticknap losing 14 - 21 on mat 1 and Jean Head, Marilyn Knight, Pauline Shipway and George Shipway also losing 14 - 23 on mat 2 for an overall defeat. Finally we went to Ewhurst with Carol Cuthbert, Tony Broughton, David Luxford and Monica Enticknap having a good win 29 - 14. Evelyn Ringrose, Jean Head, Marilyn Knight and Reg Snelgar lost 13 - 30 and on the 3rd mat Sue Taber, Eileen Warrington, Joan Goodchild and Shirley Bundy losing a close fought game 14 - 18 for an overall defeat in the match by 6 shots. Wisborough Green Farmers’ and Village Market News
Next Market - Thursday 10th March 2016 Wisborough Green Village Hall 9 am – 12.30 pm Easter Day in seventeen days time. A time for celebrating the renewal of life, religiously and that of the coming of Spring. Extra long weekend too, so visiting or having visitors is likely. Time for treats and specially tasty foods. Pop in, browse and see what tickles your taste buds or your fancy. The stallholders are expecting people to casually browse so do not feel any pressure to buy. They are happy to chat and pass the time of day. If you are eating fish on Good Friday do discuss with the stall holder about freezing his extremely fresh fish. The quality is super. Personally I favour the prepared crab. Must ask him about buckling - hot smoked herring. He will seek out fish that customers request. For roasts we are spoilt for choice of all local; chickens, guinea fowls, pork and traditional Easter lamb. Pop in just for a cup of Fairtrade coffee or tea (decaffeinated is on offer too) and a piece of cake if you are feeling naughty. Enjoy Eastertide. Wisborough Green Horticultural Society Monday, 7th March 2016 - 8pm Village Hall A.G.M. Everyone is welcome to the AGM - a necessary formality that keeps our Society in good health, so that it continues to bring enjoyment throughout the year. The new schedule and membership card will be available with details and dates of outings, plant sales, the two Shows and next winter’s talks. Once the business is done we have a quiz and refreshments. It is all very social so do come and become a member for the coming year.. On April 4th we will be “Singing the Blues”, or more correctly be listening to Simon White speaking about using blue in the garden. Simon was with us back in 2013 when he spoke about Peter Beale's roses. Remarkably knowledgeable. In May, on Saturday 7th, the Spring Plant Sale will be on the little Green with the Millennium sundial. Please look out for spare plants, possibly ones you had divided earlier. You may be sowing, so some extra to sell here would be great. It is a good time to clear out what did not suit your garden, but might well be just the thing for a different setting. Any hardware no longer needed could be brought here as well.. This is a big fund raiser as well as being a money saver for those who come to buy, plus it's very sociable AND with refreshments! In June, on Tuesday 14th our outing to Polesden Lacey is due to take place. Please ring Kate 01798 813357 to book or put your name down at the AGM. In June, on Sunday 19th we have our Horticultural Show, so bear in mind what does well with you and give it extra love and attention! The Table Top competition. The theme will be the same each month to allow scope for as many as possible: “From your own garden/allotment, five preferably flowering or evergreen stems displayed to best effect – of one or more variety.” Points will be awarded each month, accumulating for a prize at the June Show. The Committee looks forward to meeting with as many of you as possible at the A.G.M. Your involvement is the life sap of our Society. From all the WGHS committee

Wealden Trefoil Guild It was with great sadness that the Guild learnt of the death of one of its founder members Mrs June Clark who passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on 12th January. June had been at our Guild meeting the previous week and had seemed her usual cheerful and enthusiastic self, so it was a considerable shock for us all. June had been both a Brownie and a Guide as a child and had become Guide Leader in 1972. She ran both Brownie and Guide Units in Wisborough Green bringing her units to various District camps, World Thinking Day celebrations and many other District, Division and County activities. June was always very caring and on one camp, many years ago at Dounhurst, took a sick girl home to sleep in her house and returned her feeling much better the next day! In 2001 she took on the position of County International Adviser for the Trefoil Guild, a post that she held until very recently. She attended all the International conferences and was an ardent supporter of Guide Twinning. She was one of the founder members of Wealden Trefoil Guild and had been both Chairman and Secretary more than once over the years. She was always ready to open her home to the Guild for special meetings and hosted the County Guilds for their charity day each summer in her beautifully kept garden in Wisborough Green on numerous occasions. Petworth Park Scout and Guide camp saw her in the craft tent every year since its beginning in 1979, she also attended the WS Camps to give help where needed. Every spare moment she had found her knitting garments for The Queen Mother's Clothing Guild, for Link to Hope and the premature baby units in our county. June was a great support to her husband Eric in his Rotary work, his skiing, walking and cycling activities and they both maintained their fabulous garden in Wisborough Green until last year, when they moved to Billingshurst. St Peter ad Vincula Church was packed to bursting with friends and family who all came to say goodbye at her funeral in February. June will be sadly missed but fondly remembered by us all. Teri Maher

WI Report Our February meeting found us all trying to be a little “crafty”. Ruth Isaacs, one of our members, provided the materials, instructions and encouragement necessary for us all to make a large flower: the results were impressive! We had a lively, social evening despite the double-sided tape having a mind of its own at times. On Thursday, 3rd March at 8 pm our meeting will be a talk by Ben Cross of Crosslands Flower Nursery. He will enlighten us on their production of Alstroemarias: and for the September meeting a visit to see the Nursery is planned. Visitors are most welcome to our meetings. Weather Watch No snow......yet!! Wisborough Green Rainfall for January was 175mm (128mm last year – my 8 yr average is 126mm). The wet weather has continued for three months now. (No good for digging yet!) Strangely the lowest and highest temperatures in January were in Scotland. Lowest was -12.4°C at Kimbrace in Sutherland and the highest was 16.5°C at Achnagaart in Ross and Cromarty. The Met Office and NASA confirm record global temperatures for the second year running and predicting 2016 will be warmer still. Weathervane
CYBER TIPS iTip 2 Someone asked me the other day, when I was showing off my new iPad Air 2, about maximizing battery life. I have discovered several ways to avoid having to charge my battery more than once a day (normally). Here is one way: I soon realized that every page I find on the internet stays working away in the background using power unless I delete it when I have finished with it. I use Google mostly for searching but similar methods apply to other search engines. Tap on Google on your Home Page and find and tap the little icon This will bring up a pile of all the websites you have visited over the past two days. You can then gently swipe them off to the right until you get the message “No recent pages”. If you use Safari the icon looks like this and instead of swiping just tap the cross in the top left corner of each unwanted page.
More power to your iPad! Peter Edmonds
