Pastoral Letter But Ruth replied, ’Don’t urge me to leave you or turn back from you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay, I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God.’ Ruth 1:16 Mothering Sunday is March 11th, a very special day for many, as we focus on the love and care that mothers give to their children and families. Here at St. Peter’s our AllAge Morning Service at 10.30am (known as ‘Time For God’) will have this theme and we will explore together the amazing role that mothers play in our society, historically as well today. The scripture verse above comes from a short book in the Old Testament, the ‘Book of Ruth’. The background of the story is set in a famine ravaged land, where starvation has killed all the male members of Ruth’s extended family, leaving only her mother-inlaw and sister-in-law. Naomi, Ruth’s mother-in-law can no longer sustain her two daughters-in-law and encourages them to return to their previous families for support. However Ruth refuses to leave her and commits her life to Naomi, ensuring they face the future together, whatever that may bring. This situation is mirrored today in many countries of the world that are trapped in poverty and subsistence farming, vulnerable, to not only climatic changes such as droughts and floods, but to war, terrorism, and human trafficking. This creates internally displaced persons, who are refugees in their own country, just like Ruth and Naomi, who journeyed to Bethlehem, where they had distant relatives and Ruth was able to glean corn from the harvest. She met Boaz, 5 who showed her kindness and compassion. Ruth’s faithfulness to her mother-in-law is recognised and Boaz sees something special in her character and eventually marries her. The story does not end there, Ruth’s son Obed, was the father of Jesse whose son David is chosen to be King and from that family line comes Mary and Joseph, the earthly parents of Jesus, who was also born in Bethlehem. So let us give thanks for mothers and remember those who are having to struggle against the threat of starvation and hunger today and those who support and care for them throughout the world. Fairtrade is a simple way to make a difference to the lives of the people who grow the things we love. This is achieved by changing the way trade works through better prices, decent working conditions and a fair deal for farmers and workers in developing countries. Have you seen the St Peter’s Fair Trading stall at the monthly Village Market? Would you consider sponsoring our £15 rent for one month each year – why not mark an anniversary, birthday or special event. If you would like to know more please call either Gillian Gough 700157 or Val Mourilyan 700089.
Prayer Prayer Group and Quiet Mornings If anyone would like to spend half an hour in fellowship and prayer then they are most welcome on a Tuesday at 4.30pm, when prayers are said for the life of the Parish. Contact Wendy Duff on 700295 for details of venue. On the third Friday of every month Quiet Mornings are held at the home of Wendy Duff at 10.30am. It is a peaceful time when you can relax, recharge your batteries and listen to music, poetry, readings and prayers. You will come away refreshed and ready to carry on! Please contact Wendy Duff on 700295 for details.
Chain of Prayer Worried about a loved one, a friend or yourself and would like prayers to be said by a chain of people? Contact Wendy 700295 or Gillian 700157 and they will start the chain by contacting the person next to them on the list and so it goes all the way round. A copy of the chain is on the notice board at the back of church. Prayer is a powerful and important part of life and one should never under estimate its effect. You don't need to give any details of the problem just ask for prayers to be said and it will happen. Please note that it will be treated with total confidentiality.
Prayers are offered for parishioners who are in special need, especially the sick and frail. Please advise either of the churchwardens of any persons or situations you would like remembered in this way. 7 All those living in particular roads are prayed for regularly, the whole parish being covered over a 12-week cycle: Week beginning:

From the Editor Welcome to another packed edition of Ad Vincula. At the St Peter’s Away Day on 3 February (see report on p30), one of the things discussed was “outreach” by the church and it was felt that not many people were aware of the various things the church was involved in serving the wider community of Wisborough Green (including this magazine!). As a result of that discussion, I have moved Xpresso and Wizzy Tots to a new page and added some other items that the church sponsors but which some villagers may not be aware of (see p14/15). In a similar way to the permanent inclusion of village clubs and societies (p43 - 49), I intend to include these church-sponsored activities on a regular basis for reference. We only have two pictures of Ad Vincula on its travels around the world this month (see p15). Do please keep sending your pictures in. Finally, I would just highlight the plea for new members to join the Village Hall 50 Club and for a new organiser (p21) and don’t forget to join the Facebook Group WG Noticeboard (p19). I hope you will find something of interest and do please keep all your articles, comments and photos coming to me at editor@stpeterswg.org.uk. Roland Zilz This magazine can also be viewed on line at: http://www.wisboroughgreenparishchurch.org.uk/index.php/parish-magazine
Nevin Davies st
21 July 1930 – 29th December 2017 Karen, Ian and family would like to thank everyone for their kind words of sympathy and condolence. Having farmed in the village since 1956, Nevin was very much a ‘Wisborough Green’ man through and through, with wonderful tales of the village and characters in bygone days. He will be missed by many but remembered for his enthusiasm and commitment to his village and family.
EASTER LILIES If you would like to give a donation for the lilies, which will be used to decorate the church at Easter and to sign a card in remembrance of a loved one, a card and a donation box will be at the back of church on Sundays. Alternatively you can give the money to Maggie Edwards (01403 700944) or one of the Churchwardens. Thank you.

Wisborough Green Primary School News I was delighted to receive our Ofsted report, after our recent inspection, as there are so many things to celebrate. The inspectors recognised the work we do, to ensure every child is recognised as an individual. I am incredibly proud of the whole staff team and grateful for their commitment to making a difference. ‘Wisborough Green Primary School is an inclusive school where everyone matters and is valued.’ Ofsted January 2018 Our children are considerate of each other and resilient to any challenges they face. Our focus on ‘perseverance’ as a key value, was evident throughout the school. Especially when children grapple with increasingly complex maths problems, to really challenge their thinking. Our love of books oozed from every corner of the school and the quality text we use to inspire a love of language, shone through. All children now make strong progress and some make outstanding progress in reading. Behaviour and personal development is another strength of our school. The children work in a calm and purposeful environment, respecting each other well. They work in groups, listening and sharing ideas, both inside and outside the classroom. Forest School is another positive development, where pupils have opportunities to explore their love for the living world, in a fantastic outdoor setting. We are currently expanding our pond area, with the help of Sussex Wildlife Trust. Some very special visitors have made their home in our secret garden - we will share more news with you next month!

Preparing our learners for life in modern Britain, is something that was identified as another strength. This is incredibly important, our children need to be strong communicators, creative in their thinking and determined to succeed, to achieve success in our diverse world. What is next for the children at Wisborough? We continue to challenge every learner even further, so they reach the highest standards possible. Our vibrant curriculum continues to engage and excite the children, we constantly strive to find new ways to prepare everyone for their next step in life. Our children leave WGPS prepared for a great future ahead of them, both socially and academically. We really are leading the way in many of our initiatives, WGPS is the place to be if you want to grow up prepared to change the world. The Parishes Wildlife Group Do remember to make a note of any wildlife species you see in the villages on March 11th, the date when Celtique Energie withdrew their plan for an exploratory drilling site on land to the south of Boxal Bridge…..at which point KKWG started up the Parishes Wildlife Group. Then please send your records to Mike or Jill, contact details below. Very pleased to see on the Wisborough Green Noticeboard Facebook Group (see p 19) that Bev Twelvetrees saw 2 beautiful Red Kites over the church on February 8 th... As she said, Stunning!! There are 2 nests near Midhurst so it’s worth watching out to see if they come any nearer and start nesting locally. March 22nd 7.30pm: MAGIC MEADOWS, WG Village Hall, School Road, RH14 0DU (Off the A272 just by the Village Pond). Jane and Michael Joseph will talk about how they set about creating their own meadow. These habitats were much reduced during WWII when they were dug up to provide additional fields for growing food and 97% have been lost in the UK. Come along and find out how they did it…..and later on in June when the plants are in flower we will be welcome to visit and see it and have a cuppa! River Kird dragonfly survey: In 2017 thanks to the cooperation of the riverside landowners, Dr Alison Barker was able to survey the river noting both its damsel and dragonflies. When the report is out copies will be given to the landowners and to the Parish Councils. There is still some work to do on a further section of the river for which we will need to find additional funding. Village Care Scheme 14
The St. Peter’s Village Care Team meets regularly and its aims are to give help and support to the residents of Wisborough Green in as many ways as possible. This includes visiting people who are housebound, in hospitals or in nursing homes, and comforting those who are suffering from illness, bereavement, loneliness etc. We also provide (through the West Sussex County Council) a free library service for those who are unable to leave their homes. Each team member is responsible for looking after an area of the village, for welcoming new arrivals, and for giving friendly advice. We produce “Welcome to Wisborough Green Cards” containing useful information which are always delivered personally. When appropriate, we send out cards on the first anniversaries of Baptism and Confirmation, and for bereavements. We are always open to suggestions and new ideas to help the community. Please feel free to contact Angela Craddock on 01403 700336 for any enquiries.
Village Car Service The Village Car Service, a part of the St Peter’s Village Care Scheme (see above), has now been in operation for over fifteen years. It provides transport to Doctor’s and Dentist’s surgeries and local hospitals on request. There is no charge for this service but donations are invited from passengers as these are ploughed back into the Team’s budget to pay petrol expenses to the volunteer drivers. The service is co-ordinated by Jennie Burr (tel:01403 700607). We have a dedicated team of drivers and are extremely grateful to them all, but always need new recruits to cover busy periods. If anyone is interested in driving for the village please contact Angela Craddock on 01403 700336.
Church Sponsored Activities (Cont.) ST PETER’S LUNCHEON CLUB St Peter’s Luncheon Club meets six times a year, on a Thursday, in the Wisborough Green Village Hall and is open to anyone who lives in the village or who worships at St Peter's. If you would like to become a member, please ring Hilary Edmonds on 01403 700623. The next lunch will be on: Thursday 15th March at 12.15 for 12.45 in the Village Hall.

The Gardener’s Calendar
by Ian Clemens
Finish cutting back any dead foliage left on your perennials and ornamental grasses to make way for new growth. Prune overwintered fuchsias back to one or two buds on each shoot. Deadhead daffodils as the flowers finish and let the foliage die back naturally. Dead-head Hydrangeas before new growth appears. Cut off the old leaves of Hellebores to remove any foliar diseases and make the spring flowers more visible. Towards the end of the month plant your chitted early potatoes outside in the ground. Plant onions, shallots and garlic provided the soil isn't frozen or waterlogged. Alternatively plant into individual pots for transplanting outdoors later on when soil conditions are more favourable. Start to sow vegetable seeds such as carrots, radishes and lettuce in greenhouse borders or outside under cloches. Plant fruit trees and raspberry canes now. Cut autumn-fruiting raspberry canes to the ground to stimulate new cane growth. Cut the tips of summer-fruiting raspberry canes that have grown beyond the top of their supports; cut just above a bud. Protect the blossoms of apricots, peaches and nectarines from frost with horticultural fleece. Mulch rhubarb with a thick layer of well-rotted manure to keep it healthy and reduce moisture loss through the soil. Take care not to cover the crown. You can also plant fresh rhubarb crowns now. Covering your strawberries with a cloche will encourage earlier fruiting.

Wisborough Green Noticeboard Facebook Group
Our new community Facebook Group - Wisborough Green Noticeboard (announced last month) is slowly growing with now over 130 members at time of writing. I know not everyone uses Facebook but with over 650 households in Wisborough Green, I’m sure we should be able to do better than this. There has already been some useful information posted on the site and I’m told that the Parish Council intends to make use of this Group to disseminate Council News and other relevant information. So do please consider joining the Group as the more people who belong, the more useful it will be. The link is https://www.facebook.com/groups/522698378117163/ but, if that doesn’t work, just search for Wisborough Green Noticeboard in Facebook. Many thanks, Roland Zilz
An invitation to the Fifth Gospel A pilgrimage to the Holy Land of Christ`s birth, ministry, death and resurrection has been described as being a Fifth Gospel. Certainly such an experience brings the Gospels alive in a way that nothing else can do and makes all the difference as we read or hear them read and as we celebrate the Christian year. I have twice led deanery pilgrimages and propose to lead another pilgrimage in October this year with an open invitation to anyone who would like to go. Seven nights will be spent at an hotel overlooking the old city of Jerusalem and three in a hotel in Tiberias by the side of the Sea of Galilee. The itinerary includes Bethlehem, Yad Vashem, Caesarea Philippi, Nazareth, Capernaum, sailing on the Sea of Galilee as well as the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the Mount of Olives and other sites in Jerusalem. At the airport a coach, driver and Palestinian Christian guide will be there and will remain with us until we return to the airport. If you would like more information, please contact me. There is a leaflet at the back of the church. Canon John Bundock 01403 752425

Village Hall News At last! Some progress to report. It seems like we have stood still for so long. Following a site visit, we have now reached agreement with the planning and heritage officers at Chichester DC regarding our plans for the village hall. Our architect has made a few detailed changes to drawings which Chichester DC will publish for the statutory 21 day period. Our application will then be put to the Planning Committee with the support of the planning and heritage advisers. This may still take a few weeks, but we have taken a major step forward towards obtaining the necessary consent. We are now working on the removal of the fixed stage in the main hall and “matching and patching” the floor underneath. This will provide much needed additional floor space to benefit various activities at the hall. More news next month. Keith Carter, Chairman, Village Hall Management Committee
Wisborough Green Village Hall 50 Club New 50 Club Members Required and New Volunteer Promoter Needed In case you weren’t aware, here in the village we run a 50 Club which raises funds to support the village hall. Essentially members join by paying a yearly subscription (at present it is £48 and this can be paid in instalments if desired). This entitles each member to be included in the monthly-prizes draw. There are prizes of £20, £50 and £75, varying through the year, with a bonus draw in December of £500. Each subscriber has two chances in each draw. This is a good fun-way to raise monies for your village hall. Every year so far, our 50 Club has raised over £1000 towards the costs of running the Village Hall. We rely upon villagers to subscribe in order to continue this 50 Club. We also need a promoter to organise the monthly draw and to issue subscription tickets. The more members we encourage the more the benefits for the community. Ruth Andrews has been our organiser for many years and she now wishes to stand down. We are very grateful to Ruth for all her efforts. Please would you consider helping by volunteering to take on the role of 50 Club promoter and organiser. If you think that you, or a friend of yours would enjoy getting involved in this village activity, then please contact Keith Carter on 700502 or Ruth Andrews on 700671.

We also need to look at the construction of the top Balcony which was repaired last year but only on a temporary basis. Football Club Neither team has played since the start of December 2017, This is mainly due to the weather and softness of the pitch from the autumn spiking. For Club fixtures please check the web site www.full-time.thefa.com. This is not always reliable but is the best place to look for fixtures. Cricket Club Winter nets will be starting for the Colts at Cranleigh School from Early March see next addition for details. Senior nets start in Early April. We play on a Monday and Wednesday evening across the local area and are looking for ladies of all ages to play! 1918-2018 Commemorative Altar Frontal for St. Peter’s Are you someone who is good at needlework: tapestry or embroidery? Would you like to be involved in producing a commemorative Altar Frontal as part of our Village Commemoration of the end of World War One? If so, please contact me so that we can gather together a team who would enjoy the challenge to create a visible reminder of the anniversary of the end of the Great War. This would be displayed in Church for Remembrance Sunday as a lasting memorial of those who departed these shores over one hundred years ago, never to return home. Clive Jenkins 700339

‘Dos, Don’ts, Moans & Groans’ Page Well a good start to the return of the moans and groans page last month - we moaned about the village notice board and almost immediately a brand new board turned up! Thank you parish council it looks much better. (I think it was a bit quick to have been anything to do with Moans & Groans but hey !!) My first Groan of the year has also proved to be correct NO football on the green in the last 8 weeks. Grass looks great but you cannot walk on it - it’s too wet. This will have knock on effects to completing the football fixtures this season, the end of season repairs and preparation for the Cricket season. I have Received 2 moans this month from parish members. The first is a recurring problem with rubbish being thrown out of a car along the Loxwood / Durbans Road late at night. Please keep an eye out for the cars travelling up and down the road and let’s stop whoever it is. My second Moan is more serious and it comes from a young Mum who collects her children from the primary school and then would like to walk along the footpaths from the school to either the Village hall car park or the Three Crowns car park with her 25 children in a buggy and safe on the footpath. The problem is HEDGES - they overhang the footpaths and you cannot walk on them without stepping into the road or muddy verge. Please have a look and see if your hedge is overhanging and, if it is, please cut it back remembering it will grow again in the spring. Hopefully you will all have started walking around the village enjoying the views from the church, taking in a pint in the pub or even watching a sport on the green. Remember to look out for those footpath and highway issues, take a photo and log a report on West Sussex Highways web site it only takes 5 mins. And, believe it or not, they are repairing these but only if reported. SEE IT : PHOTO IT : REPORT IT : GET IT REPAIRED. LEFT: This was the kerb outside the village shop repaired 02 Feb 2018 My final DO for this month please e-mail me at kenvickery@hotmail.co.uk with anything that you feel happy or unhappy with. People do read this and take note so please help me to help the village. PS. Had a wonderful “ Burns night Supper” at the Bat and Ball with “Bag Pipes” player and all. Ken V

Petworth Area Churches Together (PACT) - working together in harmony
Palm Sunday Procession Sunday 25th March, 3pm – the annual procession will start at the Sacred Heart in Angel Street and process through the town depicting Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem. There will be the Petworth Town Band, a donkey and a Palm Sunday script read by a variety of church goers in the town. The event finishes at St Mary’s and is made complete at the end with tea and cake. Please join in with us. Spring lecture Friday 13th April 7.30pm at St Mary’s with SAT-7 – SAT-7 is a Christian television service broadcasting to 500 million people in the Middle East and North Africa. They produce a whole variety of programmes from children’s game shows to deep theological studies; lifestyle magazines to sports programmes – but woven through them all is the thread of God’s transforming love for the world through Jesus Christ. Most importantly, SAT-7 strives to make the Good News as easily understood and culturally relevant as possible. This is why most of their programmes are produced by Middle Easterners living in the region. It’s going to be a fascinating talk from Karin Needham learning about the work they do and how they provide inspirational, informative and educational television in a very different environment to ours. Annual Unlock Walk - Saturday 28th April 2018 A date for your diary. The 'Unlock Walk' supporting churches in inner city London takes place on 28 th April in Tottenham. I well remember visiting Tottenham on the Unlock walk 20 years ago – and have photos of St Peter's Milestone and Cornerstone children in Tottenham to prove it! Sadly we are older and wiser! (Some of us have become decrepid!) We walked then in a very different London and it was shortly after the Broadwater Estate riots and we were particularly worried to keep our charges safe. But we were met with joy and cake! Today the local churches are reaching out to their multicultural and vibrant communities through tough conditions. It is an 8 mile walk and we go into about 8 churches – so not too difficult! Do let me know if you would like to join us. Tel. 700700. Judy Moorey

Living Stones Away Day - Saturday 3 February 2018 Invitations were sent out for our day at St. Mary’s Hall, Billingshurst to look at three areas that impact all of us at St. Peter’s and the community we serve. They were ‘Outreach’, ‘Worship’ and the Building itself. Forty six folk were present on the day and others sent their apologies and suggestions for action. Those attending were split into three groups to facilitate discussion and to formulate proposals for the PCC (Parochial Church Council) to take further.
Regarding the Church building, many wanted it to be used more and to be made available for community use. Concerts, shows and films could be 30 offered with an upgrading of our sound and visual systems Outreach was seen as vitally important and a number of suggestions were made ranging from Pastoral Care and Support to open-air services. Worship is at the centre of Christian life, but it can seem inaccessible to many seeking a way in. Clarification of terminology and explanation of what we do and why, could help. We would like to develop our All-Age fourth Sunday morning Communion Service to make it more family friendly. Thank you to all who contributed and for those who made soup and cakes for our lunch, which was delicious. The Living Stones away day has given us lots to pray about and to think through as we move forward together, guided by God’s Holy Spirit. Clive Jenkins
Time For God - February The theme for Time For God on 11th February was Noah’s Ark. This was explored through creating an Ark picture, making a dove from a paper plate, decorating cakes with rainbow coloured sweets and choosing animal faces to put on a rainbow lolly stick, to jump about during the Arky Arky song. We heard that we can trust God to keep his promises, which are there for us to read in the Bible.

Recipe of the Month NANAIMO BARS I adore these chocolatey/coffee bars, which I thought originated from Portugal but it turns out the original recipe (which required no baking so was a bit different) comes from a town of the same name (Nanaimo) in British Columbia on Vancouver Island! Enjoy with your morning coffee!
Ingredients For the biscuit base:
For the buttercream:
100g digestive biscuits, broken into pieces 60g walnut pieces 40g cocoa powder, sifted 100g golden caster sugar 80g desiccated coconut 150g unsalted butter, melted 2 medium eggs, beaten
100g unsalted butter, softened 2 tablespoons custard powder ½ teaspoon vanilla extract 250g icing sugar 2 tablespoons milk
For the chocolate coating: 150g dark chocolate (approx. 70 per cent cocoa solids), broken into pieces 25g unsalted butter 4 tablespoons strong black coffee
Method 1. Pre-heat the oven to 160 degC fan oven/180 degC electric oven and butter a 23cm non-stick square brownie tin, 4cm deep. 2. Whizz the digestives and the walnuts to crumbs in a food processor. Add the cocoa and sugar and whizz again, then transfer the mixture to a large bowl and mix in the coconut. Add the melted butter and blend, then add the beaten eggs, stirring until well combined. Transfer the mixture to the tin and level the surface using your fingers or the back of a spoon. Bake for 15 minutes then leave to cool. 3. To make the buttercream, whisk the butter in a large bowl for about a minute until pale and fluffy using an electric whisk. Whisk in the custard powder and the vanilla and then the icing sugar. Once the mixture appears crumbly, add the milk and continue to whisk to a pale and mousse-like buttercream. Spread this over the biscuit base using a palette knife and chill for about an hour until set. 4. To make the chocolate coating, gently melt the chocolate with the butter in a bowl set over a pan with a little simmering water in it, then whisk in the coffee. If the mixture seems to separate, keep beating until it is completely smooth and glossy – THIS IS IMPORTANT, as if it appears oily the butter will harden as a film on the surface. Smooth this over the surface of the buttercream and swirl it using a teaspoon. Loosely cover the tin with clingfilm and chill for several hours until set. 5. To serve, cut into bars or squares. These bars should keep well for several days and are best served chilled. N.B. If the glaze still seems oily after beating, simply whisk in 2 teaspoons of cold water. Update Boxal Bridge Granted Listed Building Status This news arrived just after last month’s deadline. So, belatedly many thanks to local residents and to three of the NE Parishes of Chichester District, namely Kirdford, Plaistow + Ifold plus Wisborough Green, all of whom 34 objected to WSCC Highway plans to replace (read demolish) Boxal Bridge. WSCC was “inundated” with objections in the autumn when the plans became public. On January 17th, 2018, Historic England (HE) listed Boxal Bridge Grade II. According to HE guidance on Transport infrastructure (Dec 2017), “most pre-1840 bridges, where substantially intact, will warrant serious consideration for listing”. New information was provided by the Bedham Commoners in the form of an 1836 map by T.C.Lewis naming the bridge and, in addition, HE refers in its assessment to Richard Budgen’s 1724 map which shows a crossing at Boxal Brook as a ford. The HE listing states that the bridge illustrates the development of construction across the country at a time of rapid increase in infrastructure, represented by the network of stone bridges that surround Kirdford and Wisborough Green. This listing means that listed building consent MUST be applied for in order to make any changes to the bridge which might affect its special interest. We hope the council will now spend the time and money repairing and maintaining the bridge, as we have always accepted that the bridge does need some TLC but NOT a replacement. We also hope that the council will address the problems of the road surfaces on both sides of the bridge with the increasing number of dangerous pot holes!
Local Oil & Gas Drilling At the Broadford Bridge Exploratory oil drilling site, flow testing is due to finish at the end of February and the company reported that they found little of interest so should restore the site by the end of June. Be warned, however, that the CEO of UKOG, Stephen Sanderson, reports that the company is looking for 2 additional sites in the area.

The trip to Windsor Castle above is fully booked, but Kate will take waiting list names in case someone drops out. The price is £25 and includes entry and bus fare. On Wednesday 2nd May at 9.30 am the bus will be going to the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Club. The price of the tour will be £24 if we can get a full bus, and as this needs to be paid one month before the visit, Kate will be collecting £24 from interested passengers before 1st April. The cost includes as much time as you need in the very interesting museum giving the complete history of the tennis club and information on players past and present. After lunch in the cafe on site, (which serves anything from soup and sandwiches to full hot meals – not included in the entry price), there will be a fully guided tour of the grounds, behind the scenes to see where the players go between matches, where the television broadcasts are made, and of course, a visit to the centre court with its hi-tech roof. The cost for the bus fare on the day will be £8. I am presently collecting in membership subscriptions for this year and look forward to hearing from members who have not yet renewed for 2018 and from those who would like to join.

Wisborough Green History - JAMES Last month showed how Jim ran the company, gaining new business and maintaining his relationship with his customers. This month I've described how the cars were renovated except that I've used current personnel so as to make use of recent photographs (some of which are included). Nevertheless, these are procedures and techniques that have always been employed by the company. The start of the renovation of a car or any other work untaken by James E Pearce starts with an enquiry by phone or email often from like minded enthusiasts as much of their work is by recommendation. These enquiries come almost on a daily basis and can come from absolutely anywhere in the world. The work can range from a cast door handle right up to the rebuild or preservation of a vintage Bentley. With a new customer, the scope of the work required is quickly established and also whether or not the enquiry suits their line of business. Many of their customers own and drive vintage or luxury Bentleys (including the later Derby-built Bentleys) which are all cars from the 36 1920s and 30s; these cars represented the height of luxury and performance in their time. David is particularly proud that over the years James E Pearce has won most of the top awards at the Bentley Drivers’ Club Annual Concours d’Elegance events both in this country and in the USA where the Concours event at Pebble Beach, California is considered to be the top event in the world. Much of the company’s work has been associated with Bentleys over the years; however they have undertaken coachwork and preservation of many different types of car of varied styles and designs, e.g. Rolls Royce, Aston Martin, Lagonda and Bugatti. (The photos on this page both show David, firstly checking the fuses inside the engine compartment (with the engine removed) of a 1931 Bentley 8 litre and, below, with the original 4.5 litre Bentley Team car that raced in Le Mans in 1930 and WO Bentley’s own personal 8 litre saloon restored in Butts Works.)
S E PEARCE (SUSSEX) LTD (Cont) 8 It is usual for the customer to visit Butts W orks for an initial assessment once the scope of the work has been discussed. This will probably be with his car. Dependent upon the type of work, the new customer, David Pearce and either the Engineering Works manager (Duncan Tamplin) or the Coachtrim Manager (Barr y Harvey) will spend time with the customer to confirm the different aspects of the work required and any problems that may become apparent. Sometimes the company will accept a car for appraisal prior to meeting the customer. This entails spending time listing the repairs or modifications that they feel would raise the standard of the coachwork or return the car to its original specification. Photographs of the car are used to document their thoughts and these are referred to when preparing an estimate and work list. In both cases they use a spreadsheet to list the tasks 37 required, to calculate the hours needed to carry out the work (whether carried out inhouse or sent to specialist) and to list the materials required. The data listing the costs of man hours and materials are used to form the basis of any agreed costs to the customer. The timescale for the project is then calculated using a critical path analysis; this takes account of individual activity times so that the task that takes the longest time dictates the overall duration and cannot be delayed without affecting the whole project. Once the plan has been agreed with the customer, the car is booked into the company’s schedules and arrangements are made to accept the car when space allows in the workshops. (The photos on this page show Jim fitting trim to a Gurney Nutting Bentley fabric saloon and the partial renovation of a Bentley Speed Six.). (Continued next month) Richard B

COMPLETION OF LATEST LOCK RESTORATION BY THE WEY & ARUN CANAL TRUST The Wey & Arun Canal Trust is proud to announce that the official completion of Gennets Bridge Lock will be celebrated on Saturday, 21st April 2018 at midday. This is the Trust’s latest restoration project and also marks the retirement of Mr Eric Walker, MBE, leader of the volunteer team who have worked on the lock for the last two years. Our guest of honour will be Mr Nigel Gibbons who has been a huge support during the project. Work started in June 2015 after the required protected species measures were complete. The lock is situated on the Surrey/Sussex border path. “Most of the work has been carried out by volunteers but some critical parts of the construction project were undertaken by contractors,” said Sally Schupke, Trust Chairman. “The piling and concrete shell were installed by our contractors, Burras Ltd, with the rest of the work completed by our team of volunteers”. We invite visitors to join us in the celebrations at the lock side on the 21 st April. Parking will be available at Loxwood North Hall (on the B2133 in Loxwood village) and it is a short (but maybe muddy) walk to the lock. A map and souvenir brochure will be available from our publicity stand at Loxwood North Hall. Further details are available on our website www.weyandarun.co.uk together with details of boat trips from our canal centre during the day.

Neighbourhood Watch - Crime News & Advice Flight Ticket Fraud Fraudsters are attempting to entice victims who are looking for cheap flights abroad. Victims have reported booking tickets via websites or a “popular” ticket broker, only to discover that after payment via bank transfer or electronic wire transfer, the tickets/ booking references received are counterfeit. In some cases, all communications between the company or broker and the victim have been severed. Fraudsters are targeting individuals who are seeking to travel to African nations and the Middle East, particularly those wishing to travel in time for popular public and religious holidays.
Prevention Advice: Pay safe: Be cautious if you're asked to pay directly into a private individual’s bank account. Paying by direct bank transfer is like paying by cash – the money is very difficult to trace and is not refundable. Wherever possible, pay by credit card or a debit card. Conduct research on any company you’re considering purchasing tickets from; for example, are there any negative reviews or forum posts by previous customers online? Don’t just rely on one review - do a thorough online search to check the company’s credentials. Check any company website thoroughly; does it look professional? Are there any spelling mistakes or irregularities? There should be a valid landline phone number and a full postal address so that the company can be contacted. Avoid using the site if there is only a PO Box address and mobile phone number, as it could be difficult to get in touch after you buy tickets. PO Box addresses and mobile phone numbers are easy to change and difficult to trace. Be aware that purchasing tickets from a third party, particularly when initial contact has been made via a social media platform can be incredibly risky. If tickets to your intended destination appear cheaper than any other vendor, always consider this; if it looks too good to be true, it probably is! Look for the logo: Check whether the company is a member of a recognised trade body such as ABTA or ATOL. You can verify membership of ABTA online, at www.abta.com. If you have been affected by this, or any other type of fraud, report it to Action Fraud by calling 0300 123 2040, or visiting www.actionfraud.police.uk.
If you have information about any crime call 101, email: 101@sussex.pnn.police.uk or call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. If you see a crime taking place call 999. Regards, Priscilla Pinkham

We meet on the second Tuesday of the month in the village hall committee room at 10.30am - new members are always welcome. Sue Killingbeck, Secretary (Tel: 01403 700704)

Wisborough Green Horticultural Society Monday 5th March 8pm - AGM In the Village Hall Please do come to our AGM as it is your opportunity to elect the committee and to have your say about WGHS and how you think we are doing – a sort of Trip Adviser moment! Come in good time for coffee plus there will also be a glass of wine on offer. After the AGM there will be the Annual Quiz – a blend of general and horticultural questions. Your subscriptions are now due and the new schedules will be available. Membership is £7 single or £12 joint – cheques payable to WGHS (Fernlea, Kirdford Road WG) or pay online (Sort Code:60-02-31 A/c number 95988823 a/c name WGHS – please add your initial and surname as reference). It was good to see so many people at the last talk on Clematis. I think we could have had a little more pruning advice. (Generally prune hard for later flowering varieties and not much for the earlier ones). Writing about pruning, March is a good time to prune roses – and remember there are a lot of rose classes to enter for the June Show! Hopefully see you at the AGM! WGHS
Canal is not just for boat enthusiasts The Wey & Arun Canal Trust (WACT) isn’t an organisation just for boaters and waterway fans. Its members are enthusiasts of many types. They range from walkers to wildlife photographers, but most have one thing in common – a love of the countryside. And they all support the magnificent project of restoring the 19th Century canal from Pallingham in West Sussex to Shalford in Surrey. The trust can also arrange a speaker to give talks about WACT and its activities to organisations and community groups. WACT’s volunteer speakers are increasing the number of talks being given. Bookings are already being made for 2019. Talks can be organised via the website www.weyandarun.co.uk or by emailing talks@weyandarun.co.uk

Wisborough Green FARMERS MARKETplus News
Next Market: Thursday 8th March 2018 Wisborough Green Village Hall 9.00am – 12.30pm th
Our 16 YEAR! 16 years ago Lil Elliott and Mary Lindfield, together with Rosemary Treherne (d.2010) and Irene Pine (now in a nursing home) had the idea of setting-up this new and unheard of venture in Wisborough Green, for which the market community is immensely grateful.
Mary Lindfield The amount of work and dedication Mary has put into the market over the years has been phenomenal. But after nearly 16 years of active service running the market, Mary has decided that the time has come to step down from the Committee. She will continue to support the market and will still be seen doing her shopping and chatting to old friends, and whilst no longer a member of the Committee, Mary will continue visiting other markets, on the lookout for new stallholders for our market. The Committee and market community would like to thank Mary, a fine achievement. And as a mark of our appreciation, we have asked Mary to accept the title of ‘Honorary Patron’. Following an appeal for help, the Committee is delighted to welcome village newcomer Annette Heselgrove to join the Committee as Market Administrator. 47 We would also like to thank Douglas Guy, Paul Spackman, Annette and Mark Heselgrove who joined the team of market volunteers to help with the February market.
March Market – Easter Sue Turley of Garden Cottage Products will be back with a great selection of Easter food specialities. Harvey’s Farm (our turkey specialist) will also be selling free range chickens. Pure Chocolate Truffles will have an array of chocolate treats. Fairtrade is being given a boost by the Government backing of Fairtrade Fortnight: do ask our stallholder about what the organisation does. And, then give yourself a break with a cup of coffee, a piece of cake and a chat with old and new friends courtesy of Macmillan. Weather Watch Wisborough Green rainfall for January was 96mm (last year 97mm – 10 yr average 128mm). Luckily we missed the snow that the North experienced – must be something to do with being nearer the Equator! Still plenty of time for wintry weather. Sunshine levels were average for January. The warmest temperature for the month was 15.1°C at Monks Wood (Cambridgeshire) with the coldest minus 13.7°C at Altnaharra (Sutherland). To ease the winter chills you may be interested that New Zealand had their hottest ever month since records began! Weathervane

CHICHESTER CATHEDRAL FRIENDS Members enjoy a wide range of interesting events During the course of a year the Friends events programme is varied and designed to offer something of interest to all members. On the first Friday of every month, with the exception of April and December when a Spring and Christmas Fair is held, there is a coffee morning. Periodically there is a ‘Book at Breakfast’ – the book selected by the Cathedral Chancellor; a ‘Food for Thought’ lunch – the Bishop spoke at the last lunch in November; a visit behind the scenes of somewhere interesting - in April 2018 to the County Record Office where the Chichester Diocese records are kept and to the Bell Tower where 80 steps lead to the ringing chamber. There are day visits to places of interest - this year, in May, to St Nicholas Church Morton Dorset, where the engraved windows were designed by Laurence Whistler and to the National Trust’s Kingston Lacy House, and in August to Frogmore House and Savill Gardens, Windsor Great Park. There are usually two residential breaks, one to the near continent - last year it was to the Keukenhof and Dutch Bulbfields - and one in the UK. Two formal lunches take place, the first in January to celebrate Epiphany and the second in June on the day of the Cathedral Friends Annual General Meeting. Both of these lunches are followed by a speaker - at last years’ AGM it was Lord Hennessy, the political historian, and this year it will be the sculptor Philip Jackson. . The Friends is a registered charity. Membership costs £15 per year and £25 for a couple. For more information, including a full list of events, visit: www.chichestercathedral.org.uk/friends or email friends@chichestercathedral.org.uk
