Pastoral Letter “You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge your sinful nature; rather, serve one another humbly in love.” (St Paul’s letter to the Galatians Chapter 5 verse 13) Are you intending to stay up on Thursday 7th May eagerly following the results of the General Election? Or will you, like me, awake in the morning and let John Humphrys tell you what happened the night before, and whether or not there has been a recount in Sheffield North! Election fever is not something that tends to grip the majority of the British public; probably it is because we take the freedom to vote or not as a right. This has not always been the case. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, at the end of World War Two, set about the first global expression of what it means to be human and the rights that should be attributed to each man, woman and child. In the years before the Second World War, when the militaristic powers took control in Germany and Japan all opposition was forbidden. In Nazi Germany citizenship was removed from people the state regarded as undesirable, making them outcasts in their own country. Even in many countries today the right to vote in elections is not for all people. Discrimination, vote rigging and violence against free and fair elections tends to be the rule rather than the exception. Christians, often marginalised and discriminated against on the grounds of their faith, have very little choice in who to vote for, if they are allowed that freedom at all. Thankfully there are a number of Christian organisations that work to highlight these situations and monitor abuse of Human rights and the persecution of believers. Release International, and the Barnabus Fund, are just two that do great work in this field (Visit their websites for more Information). So, however you are going to vote, remember those who campaigned and worked to give you the choice here in the UK, mindful of those throughout the world today who still do not have that freedom, because of their race, gender or religion. So count your Blessings, Clive and Marion

From the Editor Welcome to the May edition of Ad Vincula. Sadly, after announcing in the March edition that Sarah Jackson had agreed to take on the job of Deputy Editor and Advertising Coordinator, she has now decided she is not the right person for the job. We are therefore once again looking for a suitable candidate. Please do get in touch if you would like more information or to discuss further. Another packed edition this month. This month we have a new regular feature starting “The Gardener’s Calendar” by Ian Clemens (p37). This is ideal for people like me who are never sure what they should be doing in the garden from month to month! In addition to the usual articles, this month we have an obituary for former local solicitor, Patrick Anderson (p15), a report on Billingshurst Choral Society’s farewell to its Music Director of 29 years (p17), a final update from KKWG (p21) and information about a Loxwood Jazz Club event that should prove very popular (p28). As always, I would love to hear from you with any comments or suggestions. Best wishes, Roland Zilz The magazine can also be viewed on line at: http://www.wisboroughgreenparishchurch.org.uk/index.php/parish-magazine
Letters to the Editor For over 50 years we've been driving through your village and stopping to use the facilities, enroute from Winchester to relatives in East Sussex. Today, we stopped as usual, I needed coffee and the excellent Three Crowns Inn supplied it. We ordered a tempting sandwich and I renewed my acquaintance with your beautiful jubilee tapestry in St Peter's. This was first seen 30 years ago when it was unveiled and shown on local tv. Back to our lunch where I discovered this parish magazine. What a breath of fresh air, a good read with humour. Oh dear I didn't find the spoofs. Treasure what you have in Wisborough Green and, for what it's worth, please leave the church clock alone, surely a digital one isn't going to fill the pews. Viva Ad Vincula. Nature Notes “I know what it is, but where on earth is it?” It wasn’t far away, but I just could not see it. I looked and looked among the still quite bare branches. A chiffchaff – no mistaking the sound. The call is exactly like its name, repeated over and over, with amazing volume for such a small bird! Eventually when it moved I did manage to locate it – tiny, slender, with creamy underside and greenish-grey back, perched high up in the oak. They are always among the first to return. - heralding summer. And now, in mid April, Chiffchaff we’ve heard a distant cuckoo, the first nightingales rspb.org.uk have been reported, and martins and swallows are back too. Then, on Radio 4 we heard Bill Oddie reporting from Malta that they’d voted, by the tiniest margin, to allow the Spring Shooting season to continue. It seems exhausted migrant birds, large or small, are still fair game over the Mediterranean islands. Is it really sport? Like me, he finds that hard to believe. On a happier note, the barn owl near the allotments is regularly seen hunting, so maybe chicks will be feeding soon. Tawny owls are calling at Adversane, and swallows have returned to a favourite site there. The peregrines are doing well at Flexham and our buzzards are loving this spell of warm weather, drifting high up on the thermals, away from the pesky crows. We’ve also had a report of a sparrowhawk lingering on a bird bath at Old Pond Cottage, emptying the garden of its small birds. It’s a bit of a ‘sparrow sanctuary’, so there was much relief when next morning found them all flitting about and chattering as usual, and even joined by a pair of robins. They also reported a lack of frogspawn this year in spite of frog activity. I’ve seen a few tadpoles at Ingrams – (or should that be toad poles?...Sorry, couldn’t resist) so that’s good news. Sadly none of our adopted spawn seems to have survived – not even some I rescued from a dried-up ditch while litter-picking. Let’s hope something had a nice meal out of it. Lastly, A quote from our local bird expert….. “I had the rare privilege on Saturday whilst at a family picnic in Rake near Petersfield, to hear, but unfortunately not see, a pair of Goshawks. I guess the female was incubating for she was calling to the male to bring lunch! There was no mistaking the sound of the pair - when we lived in Germany we had Goshawks in the garden!”
Goshawk rspb.org.uk
A privilege indeed. We glimpsed one in Devon once – sitting bolt upright on a telegraph pole. As we reversed the car it looked down at us with great disdain, and effortlessly departed! Goshawks are about 24in tall, with a barred chest and smart white eyestripe. They’re brilliant agile hunters, and even just sitting on a pole, an extremely impressive sight.
The expert is of course Mr Edmonds! Hope you see them next time, Peter! Sue J 11
Wisborough Green Primary School News As I write this, Summer Term 2015 is just about to begin. The children will be returning to school to find a few things have changed since the end of the Spring Term…
The playground is now finished! Our lovely new smooth playground now has its markings. School Council worked with Project Playgrounds to design their exciting new play space. I am sure you will be able to see it from the church it’s so bright! Each class chose a design. We now have a full sized netball court, a world map, a UK map, a compass, a target, snakes and ladders, 4 way hop scotch (my personal favourite!), a super track, a ‘What’s the time Mr Wolf?’ game, a 100 square and a brilliant pirate themed activity track which includes parrots, pirates and ships. This was all donated by our brilliant PTA who decided that this was a great use of the money they raised last year. The School Councillors now need to choose a new climbing frame to replace the one that we had to remove for the new extension. Alongside this our heating system is in the process of being replaced. This project has been funded by West Sussex County Council’s capital funding programme. So far, the boilers have been replaced with new energy efficient models and we now have ‘Radiant’ heating panels fitted into our brand new ceilings in the two original classrooms. The contractors just managed to finish the new ceilings ready for the children to return to school for the Summer Term! The next stage is to replace the ceilings and install the heating panels in the Hall, corridors and staffroom. The school has benefitted from fantastic financial support from WSCC over the past five years. Much of the school has been renovated; with a new roof for the Hall and one for the two original classrooms, new electrics, heating, furniture and of course our gorgeous new classroom. The school budget has funded replacement windows, carpets and a new oil tank. Our school has truly been transformed and we are all very proud of it! 12
Wisborough Green Primary School News (Cont) So what do we have planned for the children this term? Cricket coaching begins on Thursday afternoons for our Key Stage 2 children. This has been arranged in addition to the Sports coaching that the children already have on Mondays. Both of these are funded by the Sports funding provided by the government. Our gifted and talented athletes will be having special additional training on Monday mornings to prepare them for District Sports later this term when we compete against the Horsham District Schools. As if that wasn’t active enough, swimming lessons are due to start shortly as our pool is now up and running. We have new swimming teachers who will be teaching groups throughout this term and the first half of the Autumn Term. We are so excited to be able to use our fabulous pool this summer, as last year unfortunately it had to be closed due to the building works. We run the pool with contributions from parents. The swimming teaching is funded by the school’s budget and the Sports funding. I think I speak for everyone here when I say that the Summer Term at Wisborough Green Primary School is probably our favourite, especially when the weather is kind to us. We all enjoy being outside and enjoying our wonderful grounds. The children love to be able to play on the field and really appreciate having so much space to explore, especially our newly extended pond area which is now finally finished. The children have more space to visit the pond safely now and I am looking forward to seeing the area being used more. The planting has been very cleverly planned to encourage butterflies and bees to visit the pond area and I know that our KS1 children will be spending a lot of time exploring in there. Next time I will tell you about our plans for the rest of the Summer Term and update you further on our progress. Enjoy the sunshine! Kind regards, Trudy Emberson, Headteacher

Patrick Anderson (21-6-1920 to 14-3-2015) Patrick was born on 21 June 1920 in Newcastle upon Tyne where he was brought up before moving to Cumbria and qualifying as a solicitor after the end of WW2. He married Mary in 1949 and they moved to West Sussex in 1954 living first in Billingshurst. In 1967, Patrick and Mary moved to Wisborough Green, living first at Shurlands on Bedham Road before moving to St Peter's Cottage in School Road in 1976 where Patrick lived until September 2012. Patrick joined a local firm of solicitors (now Anderson Rowntree) in 1955 and became a Partner with Captain Oglethorpe in January 1956. Unfortunately, Captain Oglethorpe died in May 1956, and Patrick was left to run the firm as Senior Partner from then on until joined in 1960 by Robert Longmore, who became a Partner himself in 1966 when the firm became Anderson Longmore. Both men retired from the firm in 1990. Patrick died on Saturday 14 March 2015 in a nursing home near his daughter’s home in Cheshire. His funeral took place in Cheshire on 30 March 2015.

Billingshurst Choral Society The end of an era! MD George Jones retires After 29 years as Musical Director of Billingshurst Choral Society, George Jones has decided to lay down his baton. George’s last concert with BCS was a performance of Handel’s Messiah given before a packed Billingshurst Leisure Centre audience on Saturday 28th March. George was one of the founding members of BCS (along with Wisborough Green’s own Peter Edmonds) and was involved in music from an early age becoming the church organist at St Mary’s, Billingshurst when he was just 15. BCS started as an extension of the church choir but soon expanded to the villages around Billingshurst. Membership now remains steady at 100 plus. Choir members old and present gave George and his wife Pamela a good send off during a memorable evening on Tuesday 31 March at Billingshurst Community and Conference Centre (the Village Hall). It was wonderful to see such a large number filling the hall. © Sarah Elizabeth Brown 2015 David Eckford (Chairman) thanked everyone for the contributions towards leaving gifts for George and Pamela, and for all the excellent food that was shared. Val Weaver, in particular, was thanked for the marvellous cake that she produced.
As a result of the collections, it was decided to offer to George and Pamela a night at the Royal Opera © Sarah Elizabeth Brown 2015 House, with good seats and dinner included, as a musical experience to enjoy with the choir’s © Sarah Elizabeth Brown 2015 good wishes. They were also presented with certificates recording them both as Honorary Life Patrons of BCS, and all present then finished off the evening in appropriate manner by singing 'Thank you for the music'. George commented afterwards: “On behalf of Pamela and myself, I should like to say how grateful we were for a magnificent concert on Saturday (28 March) and wonderful evening last Tuesday (31 March). It was good to see the past as well as present members of the choir and the atmosphere created was symbolic of the 'family' ethos of BCS. The cards, presentations and cake were truly amazing. BCS will always be in our hearts and we shall continue to follow the fortunes of this excellent choir with great interest - as Life Patrons!!! Our warmest regards to you all.” The next stage in the development of BCS commenced on Tuesday 14 April at the first rehearsal with their new Musical Director, Cathal Garvey. Their next concert will be on Saturday 27th June 2015 at Billingshurst Leisure Centre and will feature pieces from both Concert Hall and Opera House. 17

Well, well, well – an Oil/Gas victory! March 11th is a date to be remembered by the villagers of Kirdford and Wisborough Green. Celtique Energie, the Oil/Gas company which had applied to construct an exploratory well in a field to the south of Boxal Bridge threw in the towel. On their website they announced that they were withdrawing from the Appeal which had been announced in October 2014 and thus the Public Inquiry due to start in September 2015 against the unanimous decision made by the West Sussex Planning Committee on July 22nd. They also decided not to appeal against the unanimous decision made by the South Downs National Park Planning Committee on September 11th at Fernhurst located within the National Park. So, instead of the Information Session planned to be held in the Village Hall on March 24th where KKWG intended to update people on the Appeal and our need for assistance…the event became a celebratory party instead. The hall was decked with bunting, lighting erected, suitable music chosen, much food and wine produced and local TV star Sue Jameson welcomed a packed hall including Stuart Clark who originally set up the local group objecting to the proposal. Both Parish Council chairs which had also unanimously opposed the application attended, beaming from ear to ear, and the Planning Advocate, Richard Bate, retained by KKWG to lead our contribution at the Public Inquiry came over from Kent to join in the fun. Why, after making such an investment would the Sue Jameson at the party company decide to withdraw? At a packed meeting in the same hall in January 2014 attended by local MP Rt Hon Nick Herbert, who has been a stalwart opponent of the proposal on this site throughout, the Chief Executive of Celtique Energie Geoff Davies said “the site is not perfect”. Well, we knew that. While the company has retreated from this site they do have permission to investigate and are busy constructing a drill site at Broadford Bridge near the crossroads at Adversane. The rig is due to arrive shortly. KKWG plans to continue and to assist other groups. A group of members plans to fund (with separate money i.e. not that kindly donated to support the work needed to participate in the Public Inquiry) the Wildlife expert witness to carry out rare bat surveys he was intending to do in and around the Sussex Wildlife Trust site at Northup Copse as part of his evidence. So, THANK YOU. THANK YOU everyone who has contributed. Such an outcome can only be achieved by a committed and hard working opposition. The Parish, District and County Councils played their part. Thank you to all of you who have signed and sent an objection card, written letters, contributed money, spotted important evidence, attended a range of meetings, spoken to neighbours, learned about these issues and displayed signs objecting. Recipe of the Month Crispy Asparagus and New Potato Tart This delicious tart makes the most of two essential British Spring crops. It makes a good lunch served with salad and crusty bread or as a starter. Ingredients 1lb new potatoes cut into small dice 1lb asparagus spears 8oz/225g filo pastry 4oz/100g butter 8oz/225g strong cheddar 3 large eggs 8fl oz/225ml single cream 1/4 grated nutmeg Black pepper Oven 375째F / 190째C Method 1. Cook the cubed potatoes in salted boiling water until soft. 2. Blanch the asparagus in boiling salted water for 4 mins. 3. Using a 9" round flan tin or ovenproof dish line it with filo pastry, brushing each layer with butter, letting about 1"/2.5cm hang over the edge of the dish. You may not need all the 8oz/225g of filo, but at least 5 layers are needed to give a good base. Put a clean damp kitchen towel over the top and put aside. 4. Mix together the eggs and cream together and stir in the cheese and cooked potatoes. 5. Grate in the nutmeg and season with black pepper. 6. Pour the mixture into the pastry case, scrunch the overhanging pastry up to form a rim and lay the blanched asparagus across the filling. 7. Brush over with the remaining butter and put into a preheated oven for about 20 mins or until the pastry is golden and crisp and the egg mixture is set. If it needs to be in the oven for longer, cover with a piece of greaseproof paper to stop the asparagus burning. 8. Leave to rest for 10mins before serving. Ingredients which can be added to the tart: Chopped smoked salmon. Pan fried bacon and onions. Chopped herbs. Helen V 27
A NIGHT FOR SINATRA FANS IN LOXWOOD Who's birthday is being particularly celebrated this year? Only Old Blue Eyes, arguably the greatest performer ever seen. Saturday 12 December marks the one hundredth anniversary of Francis Albert "Frank" Sinatra's birth and Loxwood Jazz and Blues Club, which raises money for the village's North Hall renovations, is highlighting its musical achievements this May with its own Old Blue Eyes' tribute The Sinatra Jukebox. Superb jazz interpreter Gary Williams, Wisborough Green favourite Harry "the Piano" and sax-master Simon Bates will be relying on you, the audience, to choose the evening's entertainment on Tuesday 19 May. With one hundred fantastic Sinatra songs to pick from, jazz fans simply "call the numbers" and Gary, Harry and Simon improvise the night's show. One of the country's finest cabaret stars, Gary has been dubbed "the UK's leading standard bearer for the super-cool era" and as well as starring in the West End production of the "Rat Pack" has soloed with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, the Melbourne Sympathy and the BBC Big Band. Pianist extraordinaire Harry "the Piano" needs no introduction to his army of Wisborough Green fans with his amazing talent to perform "on the night" and, as always, Loxwood resident and super jazz musician Simon will be hosting the evening - taking time out from being Alexander Armstrong's musical director, his television appearances, his Professorship of Saxophone for the Royal Marines and his solo appearances for bands and orchestras far and wide! Tickets, already going fast and sure to sell-out early, for this extraordinary Sinatra Jukebox concert are available from Loxwood Post Office or Anita Bates, Simon's hard-working behind-the-scenes wife, on 01403 752954.

Wisborough Green History In the Second World Way, the Luftwaffe (the German air force) attempted to control the skies above the south of England (in preparation for the invasion of Britain) by destroying the fighter aircraft and their airfields until the autumn of 1940 when the invasion was postponed. Their attention then turned to bombing the larger towns and cities and their industries. In 1944 and up to the end of the war, Germany developed and fired V1 and V2 explosive rockets at Britain, mainly London, instead of using conventional bombers.. Although those living near airfields and the larger towns were in the greatest danger, aerial attacks could happen anywhere, particularly those by lone aircraft. A serious example of this was the terrible attack on a school in Petworth in September 1942 in which 38 boys and three adults were killed. Wisborough Green was hardly touched by the war, but there were at least two aerial attacks on the village. In addition, many villagers observed aircraft crashes, dogfights between British and German aircraft and other incidents. Some of these people have provided details of their experiences. The first incident was a low flying aerial attack by a Dornier-17, a twin-engined bomber with a big glass nose, also known as a flying pencil on account of its long slim fuselage. This was witnessed by Barbara Peacock (nÊe Thurston) and her brother Guy as children while they were looking out of their front window of their home in Newpound Lane. They saw it go across the field opposite as their mother told them to duck. The aircraft flew at tree-top height diagonally towards the church and firing tracer bullets to the right towards the backs of the houses in School Road. Some of these hit the back of Peacocks butchers and presumably others as well. There was a Royal Observer Corps installation equipped with a searchlight and twin Lewis gun at Arun Brook Hill in the field just south of Billingshurst Road. Jim Balchin, who lived at Oak Wood nearby, often visited the site with other children. He witnessed the event and saw the gun firing and hitting the aircraft and believed that a Spitfire finished off the attack elsewhere, although I haven't found any reference to a downed Dornier in the area. The aircraft flew south of the church and at spire height where it was witnessed by a young Ian Champion who was in the window of the front left-hand room of Grene Cottage playing with his Meccano set on the old post office shelf. When he looked out to his left, he saw the plane approach and firing tracer bullets as it passed over Glebe Barn. The plane was so low that he could see the pilot very clearly. The plane fired along the main road and then along School Road as it banked and turned tightly to its right. Some of the bullets went into Mrs Tickner’s loft in Green House where she had hidden some aluminium saucepans to avoid handing them in to be melted down and reused for the war effort. She was intending to give them as a wedding present, but found that one of the bullets had gone through a saucepan thus making it useless! It is believed that bullets also hit the old workhouse. Another witness was Denzil Peacock who as a young boy lived above his father's butcher shop in School Road (now High Barn). He had just returned from Horsham 30
y - WW2 AERIAL ATTACKS with his mother where she'd had a dental appointment. It was late afternoon and, as the shop was closed for half-day closing, it must have been a Wednesday. His father stayed out in the drive to talk to the local school headmaster Mr. Cooper who was out walking his dogs while Denzil went into the house with his mother. Suddenly he heard the extremely loud noise of an aeroplane and machine gun fire. His father ran into the house while Mr Cooper threw himself onto the ground for safety outside the school entrance in School Road as bullets hit the ground around him. This tale went all around the school, but he wasn’t made fun of for this as he was too upright a person to be concerned by gossip. This incident was also witnessed by Doug MacDonald. Luckily no one was injured, but a large hole was found in the roof of the shop together with two bullets in the loft that Denzil kept for a while. The date of the incident is unknown. All that is known is that it occurred in the summer months almost certainly between 1940 and 1942 and on a Wednesday. Note: The Dornier-17 was a twin-engined bomber that had a wingspan of 59' and a top speed of 260 mph. It entered Luftwaffe service in 1938 with 1200 being built. They were active in front line service until 1942 when they were phased out but continued on lesser duties such as reconnaissance. The only relatively intact one known to exist was recovered in 2013 from the Goodwin Sands where it had lain in 50' of water where it had crashed in August 1940. Next month: an aerial attack on a convoy in Kirdford Road. Richard B.

Neighbourhood Watch - Crime News & Advice Keeping your vehicle and contents safe Please remember, if you are using the beauty spot car parks refrain from taking any valuable items with you. Even if your items are out of sight this won’t discourage determined thieves. Ask your local officers for one of our crime prevention leaflets which can be placed in your vehicles to deter thieves. Always lock your car no matter how short a period of time you are leaving it for, Remove valuables from your car. Don't just hide things in the glove box, Wipe off any tell-tale sat nav marks left behind on your windscreen Close your windows Double check the central locking has worked and your car is secure Where possible, park your vehicle in a busy, well-lit area Never leave your keys in the vehicle, even if you are just leaving it for just a few seconds. European Postcode Lottery Scam (and similar) A Wisborough Green resident received a very plausible letter through the post addressed to them personally saying they had won a prize in the European Postcode Lottery Program. The resident called the police who confirmed that this was a scam. Unfortunately, there are literally hundreds of these types of scams in circulation at any one time. A quick search of the internet will give you an idea of the ingenuity of these scamsters. For more information visit www.actionfraud.police.uk Of course, not everyone has access to or wants to use the internet so the following advice on spotting a fraudulent approach may be helpful: You cannot win a lottery unless you have entered. Legitimate lotteries don't ask you to pay taxes, custom fees, insurance shipping or handling or any other fee before receiving your 'winnings'. You will often be asked to send money upfront to the perpetrators by money transfer. If in doubt, the old maxim “if it seems too good to be true....” should apply. Credit Card Stolen I had my credit card stolen from Horsham Sainsburys and my husband had a bill taken. Sainsburys say they have a lot of similar thefts. Do be careful to keep a sharp eye on your cards as these people are very quick and you are not aware of anything until you want to use your card again. I expect it happens in all Supermarkets and other large shops Regards, Priscilla Pinkham If you have information about any crime call 101, email 101@sussex.pnn.police.uk or call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. Farmers’ and Village Market News
Next Market - Thursday 14th May 2015 Village Hall 9 am – 12.30 pm Superb fish and crustaceans came to the Market last month. The Portuguese seller was very knowledgeable. As yet we do not know if the stall had enough customers to make it a viable business day to come to our Market. Maybe they were expecting it to be like Chichester or Horsham! Fingers crossed they had enough customers. We have a new supplier for pork now. It's David Jesse, who has been selling lamb and West Sussex “chorizo”. The pork is his own as well, so it is bound to be excellent. John Cooper, who normally comes with goat products (when the goats are producing), is planning to bring eggs this month. All so local. A warm welcome to everyone from the Farmers’ and Village Market Committee
The Gardener’s Calendar Continue earthing-up potatoes and harden off outdoor tomatoes, courgettes and pumpkins for planting early next month. Thin out direct-sown vegetables such as spinach, carrot and lettuce seedlings then water the rows well. Hang pheromone traps in plum and apple trees. Surround strawberries with straw to protect fruit and net them to keep birds off. Take cuttings of tender perennials such Argyranthemum and Pelargoniums (geraniums).

Wisborough Green Horticultural Society Everyone is invited to The Plant Sale Saturday 9th May 2015 2 pm on the Millennium Green near the Cricketers Pub. Last year the Sale was terrific, hectic and full of gardening advice and laughter, followed by coffee and homemade cake. Without your contributions in all aspects it would not have been so productive in fund raising or fun. Plants can be dropped off late morning on site on the gravel space by the open garage. Do bring what you can even though it may not look great. Indoor and outdoor plants all welcome as are garden sundries and pots. Bring a friend or new neighbour for the experience! With any luck the fritillaries will still be nodding around the Sundial, provided by the WGHS for everyone's pleasure.
IMPORTANT CHANGE The coach outing to Hinton Ampner will be on Tuesday 16th June not as printed on the schedule or membership cards. It may suit some better, others not. Apologies to everyone. We will depart from the Three Crowns at 10am and leave Hinton Ampner at 3pm. As well as the gardens there is the house...cafe....shop....plant sales....and woodland walks. Here's hoping for blue skies with fluffy white clouds. If you would like to book a place, please contact Kate Steele on 07777 625517 or 01798 813357. The June Show on 21 June will be soon upon us. The schedule is out, spare copies at the Village Shop. Many roses are at their best around this period, weather permitting. Extra care now may give yours that extra glow. Lots of classes for other flowers will be attracting our enjoyment so jolly yours along! Foliage shrubs and flowering shrubs have a class each. Pot plants from inside the house or from outside have their own classes. Must not forget the vegetable and fruit. So whatever the type of your garden window sill, conservatory, patio or digging garden then you can join in. Each home and garden has its own microclimate; each gardener treats plants slightly differently and of course the weather helps some more than others. So who knows what the winning combination will be this year. Floral arrangements, the cookery classes and Junior classes are all so interesting and individual, so have a go. Feel the trepidation and excitement. Have a bit of fun, join in. Come and enjoy what is going on this Spring and early Summer. Aija Hamilton 39

Wealden Trefoil Guild Our April meeting was held on a lovely warm spring evening and our speaker was the Girlguiding Sussex West County Archivist, Margaret Goodyer. She gave us a fascinating insight into the world of guiding one hundred years ago when the Guide Handbook was over 500 pages long and gave instruction on such skills as ‘tree felling’, ‘catching rodents’, ‘floor scrubbing’ and other hardy activities. There were many traditional badges listed including ‘laundress’, ‘cook’ and ‘semaphore’. The book was created by Agnes Baden-Powell, sister of the Scouts founder Robert Baden-Powell and was a very full and comprehensive instruction book for the hardy young ladies who wanted to be part of this growing organisation, which is now in its 105th year. Margaret holds copies of historical Guiding magazines that list articles on Guide (Continued on page 41)

companies from our area, Petworth, Pulborough, Kirdford, Wisborough Green, many who have long closed and been forgotten. She also has a considerable collection of guiding badges, both metal and cloth from over the years, which were of great interest to the members who recognised many that they had themselves worn when in their Guide companies. It was wonderful for our members to reminisce on many celebratory events that were held over the years at Alexandra Palace, Sandown Park, Goodwood, and more locally at Dounhurst Farm. All had wonderful memories of taking their Guides or Brownies to these events. Everyone agreed that it had been a really enjoyable look down our guiding memory lane. Our speaker for our meeting on 5th May is David Parker who will be giving us a talk on WW1 memorabilia. Visitors and new members are always welcome to come and join us – please contact our Chairman Mrs Jackie Sharp (01403 784490). Teri Maher
WI Report Everyone enjoyed the presentation at our April meeting by Ginny Knox and Caro Wilson, friends since school, who at the age of 40 plus decided to set up their own company ‘Wild at Heart’ selling jellies, relishes and fruit cheeses inspired by wild, native or ancient fruits and based on traditional recipes. Having told us about how they got the business up and running they went on to talk about foraging for food. They explained the law regarding foraging and the seasonal availability of various fruits and plants. We sampled some very tasty sweet and savoury items and rushed to buy Ginny and Caro their hedgerow cookbook so we can try the recipes ourselves. In May you should be able to forage for dandelions, elderflowers, nettles, wild garlic, Wild Garlic wild rose flowers and wild sorrel. The wild garlic leaves are best piacked before the flowers appear when they are more tender. Our May meeting on Thursday 7th May will be held in the upstairs room in the Pavilion as the Village Hall is being used as a Polling Station for the General Election. We will be discussing the resolutions for the NFWI AGM in June. . Jane Zilz Mary Benson (President) 01403 700284 41

CYBER TIPS The "Phoney" Computer Engineer You may receive a phone(y) call from a company named Help PC On-line Ltd announcing that you have a problem that they have identified from cookies on your computer. They offer to deal with this problem by remotely connecting to your machine. They will then go through the procedure you should follow to allow them to make this connection. I am not making any comment at all about the credibility of this company or how they operate. But I will say this: Do not allow anyone to take remote control of your computer - EVER ! Peter Edmonds

Wisborough Greenfingers Tips Crush Lily beetles on sight. Do not be deceived by their smart red appearance. Their dirty orange larvae are disguised by the load of black excrement on their backs. That is residue of your lily’s leaves. Dig up, bag it and burn the whole of a fuchsia plant if it develops gall mite damage like leaf curl at the ends of branches. Wash yourself and your clothes to get rid of the tiny mites that cannot be seen by the eye. If burning is not possible, bag it in an old strong plastic compost sac, tie up and deposit it in Household Waste. There is no effective treatment for these mites. Deter cats from using your vegetable patch as a toilet by using a home made water spray. Fill an old empty litre bottle (of cheap washing up liquid) with water, put back cap and you are ready to be a sudden shower. You do not need to spray the cat as even a few droplets of water will deter. They are quick learners . 43
