Pastoral Letter ‘Thy Kingdom Come, thy will be done …’ (Matthew 6:10) Jesus was asked by His friends to help them to pray. Their request drew from Jesus the words we now call the ‘Lord’s Prayer’. It is interesting that even those who were close to Jesus and had been following Him, still needed some instruction and support regarding prayer. Prayer is the very ‘air we breathe’ for the Christian, whether it’s on our own, or when we worship together. You can pray anywhere and at any time. Between May 8 th and 15th the Archbishops are encouraging all Christians to pray the Lord’s Prayer daily, as they state in their letter: ‘At the heart of our prayers will be the words that Jesus Christ himself taught us – ‘Thy kingdom come, thy will be done’. It is impossible to overstate the life-transforming power of the Lord’s Prayer. It is a prayer that is reassuring enough to be on the lips of the dying and yet dangerous enough to be banned in cinemas. It is famous enough to be spoken each day by billions in hundreds of languages and yet intimate enough to draw us ever closer into friendship with Jesus Christ. It is simple enough to be memorised by small children and yet profound enough to sustain a whole lifetime of prayer. When we pray it with sincerity and with joy, there is no imagining the new ways in which God can use us to his glory.’ My suggestion is that each day between 8th and 15th May we pray the Lord’s Prayer wherever we are at 12 noon. For some of us that may be at work, school, or college. We can pray the prayer quietly or in our heads, eyes closed or open (particularly if driving!). It can also be a great opportunity to witness to our faith, just by telling the person who is wondering what you are doing, your own testimony of why you are praying a prayer that Jesus taught his friends 2,000 years ago, to assure them of God’s constant and never failing love. Prayer Chain of Prayer Worried about a loved one, a friend or yourself and would like prayers to be said by a chain of people? Contact Wendy 700295 or Gillian 700157 and they will start the chain by contacting the person next to them on the list and so it goes all the way round. A copy of the chain is on the notice board at the back of church. Prayer is a powerful and important part of life and one should never under estimate its effect. You don't need to give any details of the problem just ask for prayers to be said and it will happen. Please note that it will be treated with total confidentiality.

Prayers are offered for parishioners who are in special need, especially the sick and frail. Please advise either of the churchwardens of any persons or situations you would like remembered in this way. All those living in particular roads are prayed for regularly, the whole parish being covered over a 12-week cycle: Week beginning:

From the Editor Welcome to the May 2016 edition of Ad Vincula. I’ve had to add another 4 pages this month due to lots of articles and notices - which is brilliant! Please keep them coming. if you have anything to say that you think might interest others, please do send it to me at editor@stpeterswg.org.uk. In addition to the usual articles this month, I would just highlight a few items  On Thursday 5th May we have the referendum on the WG Neighbourhood Plan. (p19). This has taken several years and much effort by many people to get this far. We could have far-reaching problems in the future without a Plan so please vote;  Please support the new Fun Run on 8th May - see pages 23 to 25 for details;  WG Scouts need additional volunteers (p45) Finally, major improvements are being talked about at both the Sports Pavilion (p25) and the Village Hall (p27). I do hope you find something of interest this month Best Wishes, Roland Zilz This magazine can also be viewed on line at: http://www.wisboroughgreenparishchurch.org.uk/index.php/parish-magazine

Wisborough Green Primary School News After a much needed break the children have returned to school ready for a fun filled summer term of learning. It is so good to see the sun shining which is perfect for the start of our gardening projects. Our plastic bottle greenhouse is finally ready for us to start planting seeds in preparation for our outside area. We are excited to be entering the Rotary Club competition this year with the inspiring theme celebrating the 150th anniversary of Beatrix Potter. The Eco Warriors are working hard to develop some innovative designs. As our journey continues this term we must not forget the brilliant time we all had at the end of the spring term. In the last week alone we were amazed to watch the tiny chicks hatch from the eggs we had incubated and they really were the perfect Easter chicks. Our youngest children became royalty for the day as they planned the most elaborate banquet for the Duke and Duchess with an impressive feast. This was then followed by a visit to Leeds Castle where they found themselves lost in the maze and defeated the dragon in the dungeon! I think the most rewarding experience for me was the great egg drop. Besides being a fun challenge for the children, it was an opportunity for everyone to work with others from across the school. Everyone worked so well together to try and make a container to protect their egg from breaking. We were very lucky to have the support of Mr Miller and Mr Finch, who came along with a cherry picker to drop the eggs from a great height! I was so proud of how respectful and considerate the children were to each other. Our new website has now gone live and we are very pleased with the end result. We hope it is a useful tool for the community to find out more about our fantastic school. We were also delighted to find out we have been placed in the top ten rural schools in the country by Country Life magazine. This is a fantastic achievement and I would like to say thank you to the whole school community for all the support you continue to give us to make our school a truly special place to learn. As the African proverb goes, 'It takes a whole village to raise a child.' Warm regards, Amanda Harrison, Head Teacher, 01403 700280 12

All the Fun of the Summer Festival for Wisborough Green Primary School Wisborough Green Primary School is once again looking forward to providing a festival full of fun on the Green on Saturday 11th June. This year we will be marking the Queen’s 90th birthday with a patriotic twist –full details are still under wraps so watch this space for updates. Organised by the school’s PTA, the Festival will open with the May Queen Procession from school, with a programme of entertainment taking place on the Green. It will climax with live music from local bands, no doubt alongside some dancing, from early afternoon until teatime.

There will be plenty of family entertainment in the form of carnival games, inflatables, stalls and other attractions throughout the day. And we’ll keep you sustained with hog roast and pizza, and of course some quality baked products from Wisborough Green’s finest, with our infamous dad’s crew donning pinnies and manning the BBQ in traditional style. We hope that the local community will find time to support our Festival which this year we are hoping will raise money for much needed new ICT equipment at the school. Nature Notes Greetings dear readers – and apologies for my late return. Oh no - hang on! Surely no apology needed after some excellent contributions to this page! Many thanks, Peter! I now have a standard to live up to, especially with the photographs. I’d better look to my laurels there! That said – I’ve only one picture to offer this month ….. Recently I’ve spent a lot of time in London – now rather glorious with magnolias and other blossom (and with strident parakeets!) - but crowded Tubes and endless noisy traffic really bring it home how lucky we are here in Sussex. Lots of reports have come in, so this will be pretty much a list of Spring sightings. Yesterday I heard a nightingale near Brick Kiln Common – singing his heart out midmorning - and a first cuckoo was heard the day before (as always, not by me!). Chiffchaffs are calling in the lane here and swallows have returned to their regular nests at Adversane crossroads. A hobby flew across and perched briefly beside the Fittleworth Rd. The peregrines are nesting up in Bedham, and house martins are arriving in quite large numbers just west of Chichester. We had a lovely view of them, the most I’ve seen together for a couple of years. Woodpeckers have been drumming, and the ones in our oak are regularly at the nut feeders now, so – more youngsters on the way? We have a lovely group of longtailed tits too. They seem less timid, and we wonder if they are nesting closer than usual this year. One even flew into the utility room, fluttered round for a while, and then quite coolly flew back out as I watched from the kitchen. They really are the prettiest of birds with their soft pinks and browns... A heron has been seen leaving the garden so we’re probably missing a few goldfish. Certainly all the orange ones appear to be absent! There are two kestrels patrolling, over the B2133, and also east of Newbridge on the A272. Either two kestrels, or one very busy one. So good to see they’re surviving after all the wet weather. Talking of weather, our lovely mature pine tree fell in storm Katie, and with it will go our tiny resident goldcrests. I watched one perching by our pond only a few weeks ago. And once, on an RSPB Birdcount day, they both appeared and displayed for us, just at the right time to go down on the list! We do hope they find another pine tree somewhere near and settle down again. We shall miss them. And the spring flowers have been wonderful. Along Champions bridleway there is a gorgeous swathe of bluebells, with narcissi, daffodils and primroses all mixed in too. Beautiful colours to lighten the heart on a drizzly morning. Now for my picture. We’ve lots of ladybirds overwintering, and this black and yellow one was on a window frame. Possible entry for the Guinness book of Records as the smallest ladybird? See you next month! Sue J 15

Decorated Bras? London half marathon? Walking at midnight? The above description does sound a bit strange but we are proud to be taking part in the MoonWalk, London on the 14th May this year, raising money for the Walk the Walk charity, which supports people with cancer as well as helping to fund research. Our training is going well, (apart from going round in circles in the dense fog in Petworth park!) but at the end of the day we are doing it because we can…….and others can’t. If you would like to support us by sponsoring us then that would be fantastic. We think you know where we live if you wish to make donations that way, alternatively you can sponsor us online at the links below. https://moonwalklondon2016.everydayhero.com/uk/beverleytwelvetrees https://moonwalklondon2016.everydayhero.com/uk/clare-39 Thank you so much, Beverley and Clare

PETWORTH SECRET GARDENS SUNDAY 26TH JUNE 2016 Petworth’s Secret Gardens will once again be opening their gates in aid of the British Red Cross. Visitors come from near and far to follow this treasure trail of beauty and variety, in and around the centre of the town and whether big or small, traditional or modern, closed -in courtyard or sweeping vista, they all have one thing in common – they are hidden from the passing eye. This must be one of the best ways of discovering Petworth. Whether a visitor manages to visit all the gardens or just a select few, this most intriguing and historic town will reveal some of its secrets. As always the British Red Cross is deeply grateful for the hard work, kindness and generosity of local Petworth residents who are willing to open their gardens to support us. Gardens open on Sunday 26th June from 2.00 pm – 5.30pm. Teas with home-made cakes, tickets and maps from the Red Cross Centre, Market Square, Petworth, Price £5.00 with children under 12yrs old free. Wisborough Green Sports News Football Club. 1st XI have played 3 games in the West Sussex league Championship since the last report and having won 2 and lost 1 they have slipped from 5 th place and are currently sitting 6th with 4 games to go; they could manage 3rd or 4th which would be a good result in their first year in the Championship. Goals still seem to be coming from everybody which is good. Last week I watched them and Dan McDonald scored a magnificent goal to win them the game against Rogate. 2nd XI, who play in Division 4 North, are still sitting mid table with 5 games to go; they could, with a bit of luck, end up 5th or 6th if they play well which again would be a good result in their first year in a higher division. Only 2 fixtures will remain when you read this: 1st XI away to Shipley on 14 May and 2nd XI away to Horsham Baptists on 7 May. Cricket Club. Cricket has started on the green with colts matches and colts training. As you will have seen, the new practise nets are up and in use; let’s hope the effort will result in some wins for the “Greens” this season. Senior league matches commence on the 13th May with the following fixtures:7th May 1st XI Home v Eastergate 14th May 1st XI Away v Littlehampton C 21st May 1st XI Home v Felbridge & Sunnyside 28th May 1st XI Away v Broadwater

2nd XI Away v Eastergate 2nd XI Home v Worthing 4th XI 2nd XI Away v Portslade 3rd XI 2nd XI Home v Aldwick 2nd XI

Colts games will have started and fixtures are on the CC web site: www.wisboroughgreencc.co.uk A weekly news letter is available called Wizzy News. If you would like to be included in the circulation please email: wisboroughgreencc@gmail.com and we will add you to the list. New practise nets have been installed at the bottom of the green. Training will be on Tuesday and Friday evenings. Hopefully these will enable serious batting practise for the 150 colts and 50 senior players. New players young and old are always welcome - just pop along to a training session and introduce yourself. We have an overseas player again this season: Alam will be coaching and helping with the square preparation as the previous overseas players have so please introduce yourselves to him when you see him around. Touch Rugby. Training is planned to start on the green from the end of April so please come along to one of the training sessions if you fancy a game. A fund raising fun run has been organised for 8th May 2016 starting on the village green at 10.30 am see poster opposite and an entry form can be found on page 24. See page 25 for more info. Please come and join in on the day; there are going to be various attractions on the green including some very tired “touchy Rugby players” all looking exhausted as I am sure they will be. Options to run either 5k or 10 k are available and all are welcome. Ken Vickery (Continued on page 25)

Wisborough Green Sports News (Cont.) (Continued from page 22)

Wisborough Green Sports Association The W isborough Green Sports Association has been developing plans to replace the ageing Sports Pavilion for quite a number of years. Our aim is to provide a facility that will meet the current day needs of the traditional sports played in the village and become more inclusive by offering a wider variety of activities. We have been working with the Parish Council to agree a design and will soon begin the formal planning process. If a new pavilion is to become a reality, we will need to work hard to raise the money required to build it. RunWisborough is the first major fundraising event and will take place on the 8th of May. We hope it will raise enough to cover a significant chunk of the design and planning costs. It also begins to deliver on our desire to widen the sporting activities the sports association embraces. RunWisborough 5 and 10k Run and Kids Colour Run The event is being managed by an experienced race management company, NiceWork. They have been working with Chichester Council to develop the required traffic and event management plans. With less than 300 runners the event is classed as a small event and as such we will not need to close any roads. However, there will be runners on the roads around the village from 10.30 until about 12.00. There will be signs warning drivers and plenty of marshals looking out for the safety of everyone. We would like to ask that everyone tries to avoid journeys if possible during this time. The roads affected are Wyatts Close, Butts Meadow, Carters Way, The Luth, Kirdford Road, Durbans Road and Newpound Lane. The full route is shown on our website www.runwisborough.co.uk. As well as the 5 and 10k runs there will also be a colour run for children up to 11 on the Green. This will be restricted to the Green and will include a few laps around the Green for older children and a soft obstacle course for younger ones, both will include an element of colour! Fishers Farm and the Wisborough Green Scouts have kindly agreed to look after this part of the event and Billingshurst Leisure centre are providing the obstacles. As well as races the Cricketers and Three Crowns will be providing food including a hog roast and the Pavilion will be open for refreshments. We hope to bring something new to the village and ask for your support in either running, helping or just simply cheering everyone on either on the Green or along the route. If you are able to help please drop me a line info@runwisborough.co.uk or call me on 01403 700727. Michael Gadd Secretary, WGSA 25

Village Hall News

The Management Committee was very pleased that, during the consultation process for the draft Neighbourhood Plan, the community identified the Village Hall among the most valued assets in Wisborough Green.

Much of the building is still as it was when converted into the Village Hall in the 1950s. The premises were extended in the 1970s, with more recent refurbishments of the Vine Room and Servery. The Hall Committee works hard to ensure that the hall is maintained in good order and has continued to update some of the internal facilities over the last few years replacing the tables, chairs, main floor and curtains. We are always keen to take on board feedback from users of the Hall and are working on a plan to address some of the concerns that have been raised. The most common points raised by Users suggest that improvements need to be made in the following areas:

   

safer access across the 3 levels inside the Hall modernised and improved toilet and washing facilities improved kitchen design and updated equipment

more storage space and more flexible storage solutions As noted in the Action Plan at the end of the Neighbourhood Plan, it is important that the Hall continues to offer facilities that reflect the growing and changing needs of our community. It is also important that the community helps to shape any plans and improvements that are implemented. The Hall Committee is working closely with the Parish Council to develop some initial ideas which can be presented to the community and will, hopefully, help people to envision some of the changes that could be made to the Hall. An architect has been engaged to provide professional advice with this initial feasibility study. A public presentation and consultation with the community will be carried out once the feasibility study has been completed. With help from the History society, we hope to show the changing character of the Hall over the centuries and its evolution through past, present and future. No decisions will be taken until the community has had the opportunity to express its views about the type of facilities and priorities that it would support. At this stage, we cannot be sure what sort of cost may be involved. This will depend on the extent to which we need to change the core fabric of the Hall. The Hall Committee and Parish Council will be able to meet a proportion of any costs, but we shall need to seek grant funding as much as possible. If the community wants very extensive change, then this may require some specific fundraising to achieve the best outcome for the community. I will provide more information about the next steps once the feasibility study has been completed. Keith Carter Chairman, Village Hall Management Committee 27

Recipe of the Month Rhubarb & ginger syllabub The beautiful pink rhubarb, which is available at this time of the year, makes this lovely dessert particularly delicious and it looks pretty too. It can be served as it is or with thin home-made shortbread A traditional creamy pudding with delicious fruit compote stirred through - a quick and indulgent dessert. Serves 4 Ingredients  400g rhubarb, cut into small cubes  thumb-sized piece ginger, peeled and finely chopped  75g caster sugar  100ml white wine  100g light mascarpone  300ml double cream  50g icing sugar  2 pieces crystallised ginger, finely chopped Method 1. Put the rhubarb, root ginger, sugar and white wine in a pan, bring to the boil and simmer on a low heat for 4-5 mins until the rhubarb has softened. Remove from the heat and set aside to cool. 2. In another bowl, whisk the mascarpone, double cream and icing sugar to soft peaks. Remove 4 tbsp cooled rhubarb and mash with a fork, then fold into the cream mixture. 3. Divide the rest of the poached rhubarb between 4 glasses, reserving a bit. Spoon over the cream mixture, then top with a few pieces of crystallised ginger and the rest of the rhubarb. Can be chilled for several hours before serving. Helen V

Wisborough Green History - FROM After 1918 when the workhouse ceased to be used as such, it was used for many other purposes. The use by the Womens' Institute and Girl Guides and the conversion to four flats was described last month. Apart from the flats, the biggest user of the building from the early 1920s was the village school. The headmaster of the village school from 1893, Mr Crawford, was a foward-thinking and nurturing teacher. He introduced weekly girls' cookery lessons in the early part of the twentieth century; they took place initially in the school house and were run by his wife. Soon afterwards the class moved to the Reading Room; later still (probably the early 1920s) they moved to the workhouse. In the mid-1930s the class was transferred to Petworth to where the girls were taken by the morning bus until the classes ceased in 1946. Mr Crawford also started woodwork classes for the boys in the workhouse at a date unknown for which suitable benches and tools were purchased from Balchins builders. However the classes were discontinued in 1929 by the new headmaster, Mr Cooper, who took over in 1925, so that the boys could spend more time in the gardening classes. As described last month, the parish council agreed to let part of the workhouse in 1921 for a school canteen. I have no record as to when the provision of school dinners started in the village but they were definitely being provided in 1939. Schools had been allowed to provide midday dinners since 1906 but the practice was taken up very slowly such that by 1939 only about half of the local authorities provided any meals and then only to certain underprivileged children. A national school meals service was introduced with the outbreak of war. This led to the School Meals Service becoming a statutory integral part of the education system in 1944 where meals were either free or the children were charged just for ingredients (ranging from 4d to 5d). By 1945, 1.6 million meals were being served daily to around a third of the school population. In the village, the canteen was set up in the old workhouse kitchen on the ground floor. In the accompanying photo, the three dinner ladies are standing in front of the large fireplace that was a major part of the old south wall and which was demolished when the village hall was extended southwards in 1976. The canteen was accessed by a new door in the north wall that replaced the current right-hand window that was reinstated in 1955 upon (Continued on page 33)

POORHOUSE TO VILLAGE HALL 12 (Continued from page 32)

conversion to the village hall. Slight differences can be seen when comparing it with the other three windows. The canteen was run by Mrs Pipe with two assistants Mary Stemp and Olive Stemp (nee Farrell). An extract from the parish notes on the village dated 1947 states “No description of the school would be complete without a mention of the very excellent school canteen where a hundred of the children have a marvellous hot midday meal. Tribute must be paid to the energy and interest of Mrs Pipe, our canteen supervisor, and her assistants.” The photo shows a child presenting flowers to Mrs Pipe shortly before her retirement in 1945. (Note the extractor fans in the windows.) The canteen provided lunch to children who lived too far away to have lunch at home, although some very local children used it as well. The canteen catered for all children up to school leaving age as secondary schools had not then been established. At lunchtime, the children walked in a line from the school escorted by their teachers. A special lunch was provided for children at Christmas time when many more of the children attended. In 1953 and in anticipation of the workhouse being rebuilt into our village hall, the canteen was relocated to a long wooden hut opposite the old school along the lane to the new school on a site now occupied by St George’s House and Deepwell Cottage. The canteen at the new school ceased being used in 1990 when pre-cooked meals started being delivered to the school from Pulborough; the hut was demolished soon afterwards. The only other use of the workhouse by the school was during the Second World War. This was when there weren't enough class rooms in the school because of the need to teach the evacuees. Initially the school taught local children in the mornings and the evacuees in the afternoons but in 1942, after many of the evacuees returned to Peckham Rye to be with their families, the split classes were amalgamated and the pupils reverted to attending school for the whole day. This required additional class rooms for which the school leased the WI room and the second floor above in the south wing. Some building work was required to make the rooms suitable for holding classes. In particular, the second floor was strengthened and the lavatory facilities extended. Continued next month. Parish Council Aviation Group a powerful new voice in the Gatwick debate A new Parish Council grouping launched officially in April 2016 to provide a strong and unified representation for this area in discussions with Gatwick, NATS, the CAA, the Department for Transport, airport and airlines over aircraft noise issues. APCAG (Association of Parish Councils Aviation Group) has been endorsed by six founder member parishes, Ian Hare and Peter Drummond representing over 10,000 residents: Pulborough, Vice and Chairman of APCAG Wisborough Green, Kirdford, Loxwood, Plaistow and Ifold and it is planned for more to join. As an organisation comprising democratically elected bodies, APCAG’s voice is more likely to be heard than the voice of a protest group. As Peter Drummond, the newly elected Chairman of ACPAG and a Wisborough Green Councillor, puts it "Of the many groups focusing on Gatwick’s activities there is only one group combining solely elected representatives, HWCAAG (The High Weald Councils Aviation Action Group). APCAG emulates, to the west of the airport, this highly effective Parish Council grouping from the east. When APCAG speaks to Gatwick Airport, it will be with the formal endorsement of elected representatives." The primary aim of the new Association will be the protection of people in the APCAG member Councils’ Parishes areas, and neighbouring areas, from unacceptable aircraft noise. Whether by minimising the disturbance from existing aircraft movements or by having a strong voice in any discussions about future flight paths or flight techniques, APCAG will ardently pursue the best settlement possible and is already working closely with an effective grouping of Gatwick focussed groups. The Chairman of Kirdford Parish Council, Ian Campbell, sets out their reason for membership: “Kirdford is a small Council with huge demands on its time and resources and so being able to sub-contract such an important function to a properly constituted grouping, with developed expertise, is a fillip. We have huge support for APCAG’s aims.” Further Information on Wisborough Green Website: www.wisboroughgreen.org Or contact: Ian Hare 07850 364601 ianahare@outlook.com Peter Drummond 07976 253969 peter@drummond.co.uk

Wey & Arun Canal Trust Seeks Volunteers Opportunities to help with award-winning canal restoration A canal charity needs volunteers to support its growing number of restoration projects. The Wey & Arun Canal Trust is looking for help from people who can take on various administration roles. It particularly needs volunteers to help with restoration support and publicity, which are vital roles as more and more canal is restored. The Trust was formed in the 1970s to restore the canal from Pallingham in West Sussex to Shalford in Surrey. It has active projects at three sites along the 23-mile route, with work on other sections in various stages of planning. National awards have been won for the new High Street bridge and lock at Loxwood and the Loxwood Canal Centre. “We have had enormous success in fully restoring various sections and the rate of progress is increasing,” said Trust chairman Sally Schupke. “More restoration help is needed and we have a number of vacancies, mostly involving working from home.” Anyone interested in filling one of the support@weyandarun.co.uk or call 01483 505566 38

Wey & Arun Canal Trust News New canal bridge opens in Surrey Volunteers and contractors met a tight deadline to get an important new canal bridge opened to traffic. Vehicles began using Compasses Bridge, at one of the entrances to the Dunsfold Park aerodrome and business complex, on schedule on Thursday, 31st March 2016. The bridge, at Alfold, is a strategic part of the Wey & Arun Canal Trust’s restoration policy in Surrey. It is replacing an ageing concrete One of the first vehicles to cross the new causeway which blocks the waterway. Compasses Bridge on 31st March 2016 The entrance road to Dunsfold Park was successfully realigned over the Easter weekend, completing phase one of the Trust’s Compasses programme. Chartered civil engineer Tony Ford, a Trust director, is in charge of the project. “Our volunteers and visiting groups worked tirelessly to achieve the critical date for the road changeover,” he commented. “It needed to happen on time to mesh with the aerodrome’s busy events schedule.” Volunteers, among them specialists from the Waterway Recovery Group, worked with contractors CJ Thorne on the realignment and surfacing, moving the road off the 1930s causeway. Work on the project, which includes reopening nearly a mile of the canal’s Summit Level to navigation, began in earnest 15 months ago. Phase two – demolition of the causeway, re-creation of the canal cut and landscaping – is scheduled to start in mid-April. Volunteers are now cladding the bridge’s sides and training walls in bricks and completing the paving on the bridge surface. “The bridge opening is a major achievement, particularly for all the people who have given their time to get the realignment completed on schedule,” said Trust chairman Sally Schupke. “We are now looking forward to seeing boats being able to use the canal and the area developing as part of our aim to create a green corridor from the River Arun to the River Wey Navigation.”

The scene in January 2016

The Trust plans to officially open the new bridge and restored canal section on Sunday, October 2nd. It will be one of the locations for celebrations to mark the 200th anniversary of the opening of the Wey & Arun Canal from Pallingham in West Sussex to Shalford in Surrey. 39

FSW OPENS CHARITY SHOP The Chichester Diocesan Association for Family Support Work (FSW) has opened a charity shop in Eastbourne. A launch event was held in early April, at which HM Lord Lieutenant of East Sussex, Peter Field, cut the ribbon. The Bishop of Lewes, Richard Jackson, gave a short blessing for the shop and for FSW’s work in the town. Eastbourne’s Mayor, Cllr Janet Coles, and the MP Caroline Ansell, were also in attendance. The shop, at 26 Cornfield Road, will raise funds for FSW, which has been helping vulnerable children and families in Sussex since 1890. Martin Auton-Lloyd, FSW’s Director, said: “Eastbourne is a perfect location for our new shop as we’ve just employed a Family Support Worker in the town. Money raised from the shop will help families across Sussex who are struggling with issues such as unemployment, bereavement, illness or family break down. Our aim is to improve children’s lives by building a strong home environment.” The charity is looking for shop volunteers who can give half a day each week. Wisborough Green Farmers’ and Village Market News

Next Market - Thursday 12th May 2016 Wisborough Green Village Hall 9 am – 12.30 pm West Indian roti. Have you had one? Trevor from Cruickshank's Catering For All was going to produce some hot food at the Village Market, but he was unable to come at the last moment last month. BUT he is planning to provide hot spicy West Indian Roti at the next Market. Had to look this up! Roti is a sort of chapati flatbread made of wholewheat flour and is used to wrap up the chicken in a spicy sauce. Sounds interesting. Trevor so far has brought lots of cakes and puddings, but is equally happy making savoury dishes. What the Market STILL needs urgently is EXTRA people to help with setting up the tables before the Market starts or help to put them away after it finishes. The folding tables just need moving and legs pulled out by one or a pair of people. You do not need to be a Samson! We have now the core of men, a Table Team indeed. The team that is doing this already do it on either a regular basis or on specific dates. They need extras to cover holidays, appointments and emergencies. Lots of camaraderie and quips make it a pleasant exercise! If you could possibly help, please ring RAY 01403 701004. COVER help on an occasional basis for the refreshments Team for Macmillan would be welcome too - we split the morning into two duties to keep things light, though the Macmillan person keeps going all the time! This month we had a last minute unavoidable absence and would really have appreciated some help. It does not matter if you do not know anyone here because you soon will once you join! We are known as a friendly community oriented Market. All the organisers are voluntary so the more help the better. Thank you for thinking about this. Wisborough Green Horticultural Society Everyone is invited to The Spring Plant Sale Saturday 7th May 2015, 2 pm the Millennium (Little) Green near the Cricketers Pub. It's the Spring Sale again – our biggest fund raiser to help pay for the Shows and Talks. That is the boring but necessary bit. The fun bit is getting your ‘surplus to requirements’ items together and taking them to Philip Midwinters or parking them on the gravel by the garage space facing the Millennium sundial the evening / morning before the sale, AND THEN coming in the afternoon to BUY more stuff. Last year the Sale was terrific, hectic and full of gardening advice and laughter, followed by coffee and homemade cake. Do bring what you can even though it may not look great. Indoor and outdoor plants are all welcome as are garden sundries and pots. Bring a friend or new neighbour for the experience! With any luck the fritillaries will still be nodding around the Sundial, provided by the WGHS for everyone's pleasure. Reminders: In June, on Tuesday 14th our outing to Polesden Lacey is due to take place. Please ring Kate 01798 813357 or Philip 01403 700402 to book your seats. Not a long journey there this time.

In June, on Sunday 19th we have our Horticultural Show, so bear in mind what does well with you and give it extra love and attention! It's well into our active gardening phase of the year with visits and Shows to enjoy. Happy gardening! Aija Hamilton

 Continue earthing-up potatoes and harden off outdoor

tomatoes and pumpkins for planting early next month.

 Thin out direct-sown vegetables such as spinach,

carrot and lettuce seedlings then water the rows well.

 Plant out brassicas and leeks to their final positions.  Weed around your onions and garlic to reduce competition for

nutrients and water. Applying an onion fertiliser will boost growth.

 Hang pheromone traps in plum and apple trees. (Continued on page 49)

The Gardener’s Calendar

(Continued)

 Surround strawberries with straw to protect fruit and

net them to keep birds off.

 Erect netting around your soft fruit plants to prevent birds eating

your crop.

 Remove blossom and fruits from newly planted fruit trees to allow

them to establish properly during their first year.

 Take cuttings of tender perennials such as Fuchsia, Argyranthemum

and Pelargoniums (geraniums).

 Harden off half-hardy plants by leaving them outside during the day

and bringing back under cover at night for 7 to 10 days before planting outdoors.

 Don't be tempted to cut down or tie up the foliage of spring-

flowering bulbs, let them die down naturally.

WI Report Wisborough Green WI is now, officially, a basket case! What I mean to say is that on April 7th, Jan Thompson gave a talk on her passion, baskets! She brought many different types and sizes of baskets to show us that she had collected from different continents. She explained their different uses and materials used, even the ones made out of telephone cables! Our next meeting on the 5th May will be our Resolution meeting. The two resolutions to be voted on are:  Avoid food waste, address food poverty, and

 appropriate care in hospitals for people with dementia. Joel Gage will be coming along to talk about a Charity he helped to start to do with helping Migrants in Greece. Weather Watch Wisborough Green Rainfall for March was 101mm (12mm last year – my 8 yr average is 48mm). This high amount was due to storms Jake and especially Katie. Lowest temp was -8.0°C at Altnaharra, Sutherland and the highest was 17°C at Braemar in Aberdeenshire (strangely Braemar was the coldest the month before!) An average month for sunshine in March. The highest wind gust was recorded at the Needles (IOW) – 106 mph. Weathervane

CYBER TIPS How many times…..? A good and really ‘with it’ friend, living alone, got a perplexing call the other day from Scotland Yard Fraud Squad appealing for help in an investigation. The “sergeant” said that accounts and cards had been compromised, money had been withdrawn and so on. The old story we have heard before and of course it was a scam. Of course?? The caller was so convincing, asking questions and then feeding back the answers over several calls, giving the impression that he knew all his victims details and personal information right from the beginning. The result is fear, panic, doubt and confusion. Such confusion that the victim was almost inclined to go along with the “sergeant”, withdraw all the “remaining” money in the account and hand it all over to a courier together with cards. But, fortunately, alarm bells rang, the local and extremely sympathetic and helpful police were called and the last phone call ended rather abruptly. This was a dreadful experience, frightening and sickening. End any call of this nature straight away before it gets out of hand. If it is genuine, it will never start this way. And if you show that you are suspicious, the caller will go away, he won’t waste his time on you! .

You must always maintain control of these conversations. Peter Edmonds
