Pastoral Letter “Don’t you realize that in a race everyone runs, but only one person gets the prize? So run to win.” 1 Corinthians 9:24 (New Living Translation) Are you in training for “Run Wisborough”? I’ve met many folk who are pounding the roads and footpaths locally to get themselves ready for the big day! St Paul, the writer of the words above, was using the analogy of athletes in disciplined training as an example of the life of faith. He was encouraging New Testament believers to be in strict training to live out the Gospel in a hostile world. Most folk I know who run always want to improve on their previous time over the set distance. They don’t want to stay the same, or worse still, revert back to a time already achieved! Yet in life, many people don’t have an aim, no target to attain, no goal, no clock to beat, they remain static. One of my great heroes of faith was the Scottish Christian Missionary to China who died in a Japanese internment camp in China in 1945. His name was Eric Liddell. He represented Scotland in Rugby Union, but was best known for his athletic prowess as a sprinter, culminating in the 1924 Summer Olympics in Paris. His Christian beliefs prevented him from running the heat of his favoured 100 metres, but instead he was put into the 400 metres which he then went on to win (described in the 1981 film, ‘Chariots of Fire’). Eric had a goal in life, and that wasn’t playing rugby or even running, but to share the 5 Good News of Jesus with ordinary folk in China, which he did until his death in 1945. What is your goal in life? Whatever it may be, do it to the best of your ability. If you are competing in ‘Run Wisborough’, have a great day and I hope it will be a day to remember for all the right reasons.

BISHOP MARK WRITES…. Dear Friends, 'Thy Kingdom Come' is a phrase that trips off the tongue of Christians every time they pray the Lord's Prayer. It sums up the 9 purpose of Jesus and of his body, The Church. We exist, with Jesus, to build the Kingdom of God. We do that, in part, by seeking to transform the unjust structures of society and conforming them to the intentions of God. We also do it by sharing our faith, hope and love with others. However we help build the Kingdom of God, we must do it in partnership with God and so pray as Jesus taught us: Thy Kingdom come. Prayer is what ensures our partnership with God. Without it, we risk trying to establish not his Kingdom, but some lesser vision of our own. Thy Kingdom Come has become the title and focus of a worldwide wave of prayer during the period between Ascension Day and Pentecost (25th May - 4th June, this year). Every one of us is invited to join in this wave of prayer that more people may come to know, love and follow Jesus - and so become joyful fellow-workers in building up God's Kingdom. There are countless ways to join in this worldwide wave of prayer, as churches, as families or groups, or quietly as individuals. Last year, many churches hosted daylong events embracing many different kinds of corporate and individual prayer. I was privileged to share in several. This year a website has been launched: www.thykingdomcome.global. I urge you to visit it if you can and to discover how you can best be a part of this wave of prayer, whether or not your church is hosting a special event. With thanks for our partnership in prayer, +Mark Bishop of Horsham

Not so quiet 2017 There is one thing that has always troubled me about the C of E in this country and that is the lack of quiet and personal preparation before a service. I remember as child having to quietly place myself in a seat in church, while Father robed to assist at the communion: all was quiet, make a shuffle or blow your nose and the congregation all focused on you! On a typical Sunday now people are still scrabbling through the door at 10.30am, or after, when the Priest and choir are ready to begin the service, leaving no time for quiet meditation before coming into the presence of Our Lord and taking part in that most sacred of services, the Communion. When I was in Paphos our first service of the day, on a Sunday was at 8.15am. By 8.05am the majority of the congregation were in place and at 8.10am the church warden read the notices. Any still to arrive had to wait until these were complete. THEN! There was silence, for 2 to 3 minutes, no conversations, no organ. The bell rang at 8.15am and the first hymn was sung. It was a time of composure, a time for everyone to focus on what was about to happen, one that I valued immensely. Malcolm B

Church Building Works a Progress Report The first works to be undertaken to the church in the approved scheme was the removal of the organ for renovation and repair. The dismantling of the organ took a week to accomplish with 2 men from Bishop and Sons of Ipswich working full time with help from our organist, Malcolm Brinson, and others from Bishops on a part time basis. The organ loft is now empty and ready for the next stage of works. A temporary electronic organ has been installed in the church for use in the meantime. A start date for the main works has not yet been finalised at the time of writing. Jamie Daniell (Churchwarden)

Wisborough Green Fete Society – 2017 Donations Are you involved with, or do you know, a local good cause that would benefit from some additional funding? Every year the Wisborough Green Fete Society aims to support a variety of local good causes – last year we were able to make donations to eight village and local community projects and charities. If you are interested in being considered this year, or would like to find out more, please contact Kate Perry on 01403 700099.
Nature Notes The chiff chaffs are back at last! A swallow has been seen over Loxwood, a blackcap up in Bedham, and down on Amberley Wildbrooks there were several Egyptian geese. (I don’t know if they were migrants or possibly escapees?) No nightingales yet and, of course, I will be the last to hear a cuckoo – I’m resigned to that now. But, as long as some of us hear these precious visitors once more, I am content. Their long migration is fraught with dangers - the sheer distances, the weather, and sadly also from us. So welcome back, you heralds of summer! Meanwhile our native creatures are busy raising young and bird feeders are emptying fast. Just a reminder to clean and disinfect when you’ve time, as viruses can lurk amongst old seeds and nuts. Which reminds me - I need to get out and do as I say!! And do please be aware of low-flying parents, (winged ones, I mean!) especially blackbirds, during the breeding season. I followed a pair of red-legged partridges along a lane in Kirdford the other day! Luckily there was no traffic, as they waddled along in front of me giving me a gorgeous closeup view. They separated of course! It was a good fifty yards before one scuttled over to join its mate, and escape through the hedge. Such a delightful encounter. Now - blackthorn can be a real pest. It spreads across field edges, and moves, almost imperceptibly, into gardens, taking root and sprouting up and away while your back is turned! Its thorns are relentless and painful if you get your hand 14 among them – so not an easy plant to love. Let’s pull it all up! But… hold on… this year its blossom has been absolutely glorious. Jim took this of our little wildflower field. A bank of white shimmering in the sun – a beautiful, big flowering hedge with no help from us, hiding all the wires and poles of the pumping station, And it’s a great habitat for birds and other creatures, not to mention some big fat sloes for a drop of Christmas gin! On one of our walks there’s a wide path between two lines of stock fencing, and every dozen yards or so, it’s crossed with thin shallow runs. Could they be vole tracks? Or something bigger? (in my fantasy, even weasels?) Definitely something small and persistent. Perhaps I’d better take a sleeping bag and keep watch. Any suggestions? Lastly, a friend saw this on the internet. “Bees were set a scientific test. A pipette was filled with nectar and a small plastic disc with a thread attached was placed on top. Almost all the bees tried to get to the honey, then gave up. One or two eventually managed to move the thread and got their reward. They returned to the hive and ‘informed’ the others, as over time nearly all them came and did the same thing!” Bees are completely brilliant –we must look after them!
Nature Notes (Cont) P.S. Up at Glasshouses, on the Bedham Road, there is a beautiful bank of cowslips, along with primroses, bluebells, wood anemones, violets - and early purple orchids nearby. Gorgeous! Sue J

Wey & Arun Canal Trust News
SMALL CRAFT INVITED TO JOIN RIVER RALLY A friendly flotilla of canoeists, kayakers and small boat owners is seeking recruits for an expedition up the River Arun. The occasion is the annual rally on the waterway between Pulborough and Pallingham Quay organised by the Wey & Arun Canal Trust. The 2017 event is on Sunday, May 14th, again celebrating the long tradition of boats navigating a river which was once part of a route from London to the South Coast. Last year’s flotilla included, members of the Trust, enthusiasts from several canoe clubs and youth groups and even a paddle boarder. “Our rally is always a colourful, convivial and very pleasant occasion,” said Trust chairman Sally Schupke. “Everyone with a canoe, kayak, paddle board or small boat is welcome to join us for an enjoyable outing on the river.” The Arun is tidal as far as Pallingham Weir and the rally date is chosen to ensure the tide is high enough for small craft to 17 navigate a picturesque section of the waterway. The aim is to reach the site of the original junction of the Wey & Arun Canal with the river and then go on to the Pallingham Quay, the highest navigable point for boats on the Arun. The 18 th century Stopham Bridge is another historic feature on the route. Launching at Pulborough is planned for between 3pm and 3.30pm for small boats which need to use the slipway there. There will be a break at Pallingham Quay and, if time and water levels permit, participants can also stop for refreshments at the White Hart pub by Stopham Bridge. To book places on the rally visit the events page at www.weyarun.org.uk – which provides more information and maps – or e-mail rallies@weyandarun.co.uk. Wey & Arun Canal Trust is restoring the 23-mile canal between Pallingham and Shalford in Surrey. The owners of small boats, canoes and kayaks can book to use the restored canal section at Loxwood and at various other points where restoration has taken place.
Testing times on canal Volunteers of the Wey & Arun Canal Trust have been tested on the practice and theory for the safe use of tracked excavators over 10 tonnes. Five people who work at the Gennets Bridge Lock construction site near Loxwood, West Sussex have had some expert instruction. (Continued on page 19)

"The use of the diggers is a vital part of restoring this canal" said Eric Walker MBE, project manager at the lock. “Here at Gennets Bridge Lock we get lots of visitors walking along the towpath from the Canal Centre in Loxwood and they are amazed at what has been achieved by the volunteers, and the use of excavators is an essential part of that work.” The Construction Plant Competence Scheme instructor Alan Dougharty, of Accredited Plant Training at Hadfold Farm, Adversane added: “This is good result for the volunteers, who are in the older age bracket and do not do this full time.” With the better weather, the volunteers will be excavating a winding hole – a place for boats to turn round – anticipating the trip boats travelling up from the Loxwood Canal Centre once the next part of the canal is restored and reopened. To contribute to the project, or to keep a track of the progress, please visit www.weyarun.org.uk.
School Invites Bursary Applications Are you aware of a child in your Parish who would be benefit from a boarding education, regardless of family means? Christ’s Hospital near Horsham, invites applications for bursary places which can cover up to 100% of boarding fees. Year 5 pupils who are considering secondary education in September 2018 are invited to apply. John Franklin, Head Master said: “All candidates applying for a place will be assessed on their potential, both academically and in a number of other areas. Those awarded places will gain the benefit of an outstanding educational opportunity at Christ’s Hospital. Currently, 75% of our boarders receive a means-tested bursary; 14% (117 pupils) receive a free place and one-third of parents pay less than 10% of the boarding fee. Wisborough Gre RunWisborough 7th May 2017 Following last year’s fantastic event, the run returns this year with the same aim of raising money for our new sport’s pavilion. Last year we raised about £3,000; this year we’re on target for over £5,000 thanks to the popularity of the event and the generosity of local sponsors. We expect about 500 runners this year and while we will not have to close any roads there will naturally be an impact on movement around the village. We will have plenty of marshals to look after everyone’s safety during the run which starts at 10.30 and will be complete by 12.00. This year’s route is slightly different to last year and the roads affected are Wyatt’s Close, Butt’s Meadow, Carter’s Way, The Luth, Kirdford Road, Durbans Road, Newpound Lane and School Lane. The full route can be seen on our website www.runwisborough.co.uk. As well as the 5k and 10k runs there will be a kid’s colour run for children aged from 4 to 10. This will involve biodegradable paint and one or two laps around the Green organised by the Wisborough Green Scouts and sponsored by Fisher’s Farm. There will be plenty of food and refreshments for runners and spectators alike so we encourage everyone to come along to see what’s happening! 20
We really hope we can replicate the success of the inaugural event this year so fingers crossed the weather is as good. Support along the route really helps add to the atmosphere so please feel free to cheer people on from your front gardens if you can’t get to the Green! Finally, if you’re not running (there’s still time to enter!), but can help on the day please drop me a line at info@runwisborough.co.uk or call me on 01403 700727. Michael Gadd, Secretary WGSA

HIGHLIGHTS OF HOLY WEEK Palm Sunday - Time for God Service Sunday 9 April 2017 We celebrated Palm Sunday with our Time for God Service in April. As well as worship led by our music group, there were four activities. The first was to make ‘waving palms’ to take on our Palm Sunday Procession outside the Church, along with a large banner that was completed during the activity time. There were stones to decorate as in Luke 19 verse 40, and a Holy Week cross similar to an Advent calendar to count down the days to Easter.
30
Everybody then walked in procession out of the church, past the duck pond, along the A272 and back up Glebe Way and the Church path to celebrate this tradition of Palm Sunday.
Next Time For God Service is at 10.30am on Sunday 14th May.
K & EASTER AT ST. PETER’S A Passover Meal Maundy Thursday 13 April 2017 On Maundy Thursday evening (the Thursday before Easter) Christians gather to remember Jesus sharing the Passover with his Disciples and instituting the Lord’s Supper, which we also call Holy Communion or the Eucharist. This year at St Peter’s we began by sharing the Passover Meal (Seder) which Jews do every year to remember the Hebrew slaves leaving Egypt following the ‘Ten Plagues’. Moses led the people in haste from captivity, hence the use of unleavened bread and the symbolism associated with the other foods used in the meal. Following the Passover ritual, we then shared in the bread and wine of Communion, recognising the link from old covenant to the news that Jesus told His followers to do in ‘remembrance of me’.
31
Easter Sunday 16 April 2017 The church was packed for the Sung Eucharist service on Easter Day and everybody enjoyed the traditional egg rolling competition afterwards with the winner receiving a bag of eggs (right).

Recipe of the Month
Creamy chicken and asparagus risotto A wonderfully hearty risotto that is creamier than most. Makes a warming meal. Ingredients (Serves 6) olive oil 1 large onion, finely chopped 2 cloves garlic, crushed 250g bacon, diced 500g chicken breast fillets 550g arborio rice 250g asparagus 1.2L chicken stock 200ml soured cream 2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh basil 2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh parsley 150g grated cheese, such as Cheddar or Gruyere Method Prep:30min
Cook:1hr
Ready in:1hr30min
1. Heat oil in large heavy based saucepan over medium high heat. Add onion, garlic, bacon to saucepan and cook until onion softens and bacon starts to brown. Dice chicken and add to saucepan - toss until white, but not golden, in colour. 2. Add all rice to saucepan and stir through for several minutes (allowing rice to soak up some of the excess oil). Chop asparagus and add to saucepan. 3. Add chicken stock 250ml at a time, allowing each addition to absorb into the rice before adding the next (this may take 30 minutes or so), and stirring constantly - you'll need to bring the risotto to a simmer or quiet boil. 4. Rice should be softened at this point and majority of liquid absorbed. If this is not the case continue to add 100ml of stock, allowing it to absorb, until rice is softened and liquid is absorbed. 5. Remove saucepan from heat and stir through soured cream, fresh basil and parsley. Stir through grated cheese, and continue to stir until cheese is melted through. Neighbourhood Watch Law Abiding Citizen Alert Fraudsters are sending out a high volume of phishing emails to personal and business email addresses, pretending to come from various email addresses, which have been compromised. The subject line contains the recipient’s name, and the main body of text is as below: “Hi, [name]! I am disturbing you for a very serious reason. Although we are not familiar, but I have significant amount of individual info concerning you. The thing is that, most likely mistakenly, the data of your account has been emailed to me. For instance, your address is: [real home address] I am a law-abiding citizen, so I decided to personal data may have been hacked. I attached the file – [surname].dot that I received, that you could explore what info has become obtainable for scammers. File password is – 2811 Best Wishes,” 34
The emails include an attachment – a ‘.dot’ file usually titled with the recipient’s name. This attachment is thought to contain the Banking Trojan Ursniff/Gozi, hidden within an image in the document. The Ursniff Banking Trojan attempts to obtain sensitive data from victims, such as banking credentials and passwords. The data is subsequently used by criminals for monetary gain.
Protect Yourself: Having up-to-date virus protection is essential; however it will not always prevent your device(s) from becoming infected. Please consider the following actions: Don’t click on links or open any attachments you receive in unsolicited emails or SMS messages: Remember that fraudsters can ‘spoof’ an email address to make it look like one used by someone you trust. If you are unsure, check the email header to identify the true source of communication (you can find out how by searching the internet for relevant advice for your email provider). Do not enable macros in downloads; enabling macros will allow Trojan/malware to be installed onto your device. Always install software updates as soon as they become available. Whether you are updating the operating system or an application, the update will often include fixes for critical security vulnerabilities.
- Crime News & Advice Create regular backups of your important files to an external hard drive, memory stick or online storage provider. It is important that the device you back up to is not connected to your computer as any malware infection could spread to that as well. If you think your bank details have been compromised, you should contact your bank immediately. If you have been affected by this or any other fraud, report it to Action Fraud by calling 0300 123 2040, or visit www.actionfraud.police.uk.
Thefts from rural properties We have received numerous reported thefts from sheds, garages & outbuildings in recent weeks. Power tools, garden machinery, bicycles and quad bikes have been stolen. Please report anyone acting suspiciously to us at the time by calling 999. Do you have the serial numbers of your hand tools? have you security marked them? if not please think seriously about doing so. For rural crime prevention tips follow this link: https://sussex.police.uk/advice/ protect-your-neighbourhood/rural-crime/
Wonga Data Breach Wonga has confirmed a data breach where up to 250,000 accounts have been compromised. The incident is now being investigated by the police and has been 35 reported to the Financial Conduct Authority. Wonga has updated their website with further information and confirmed that they are contacting all those affected and are taking steps to protect them, but there are also some things you can do to keep your information secure.
Here’s what you can do to make yourself safer: If any of your financial details were compromised, notify your bank or card company as soon as possible. Review your financial statements regularly for any unusual activity. Criminals can use personal data obtained from a data breach to commit identity fraud. Consider using credit reference agencies, such as Experian or Equifax, to regularly monitor your credit file for unusual activity. Be suspicious of any unsolicited calls, emails or texts, even if it appears to be from a company you know of. Don’t open the attachments or click on links within unsolicited emails, and never disclose any personal or financial details during a cold call. If you have been a victim of fraud or cyber crime, please report it to us: http://www.actionfraud.police.uk/report_fraud If you have information about any crime call 101, email: 101@sussex.pnn.police.uk or call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. If you see a crime taking place call 999. Regards, Priscilla Pinkham
Wisborough Green History - MY LIFE DURI Concluding Gerald's wartime memories after he described the arrival of the Canadian and American soldiers last month. I do not have a marker in my memory as to when the American soldiers came to stay in Wisborough Green, possibly a few months before D-Day. I have no memory of them marching or even any training being carried out. This leads me to the conclusion that they all did their training at Slapton Sands in Devon known as Exercise Tiger. It was kept secret until well after the war, but look it up on the internet if you do not know of it.
36
What I do remember is they liked a beer and the pubs were again very busy. I soon learnt that when the soldiers asked you “Have you got any sisters? it was beneficial to say "Yes", and then you were given a bar of chocolate or cigarettes to take home for her. I used to hide my cigarettes in the shed or in the roof of the toilet. I often wonder if Mr Skinner ever found them; I would have loved to have asked him. How sad he died at age 56. The main cigarette the soldiers smoked was a brand, named Sweet Caporal. I am sure they were packaged, especially for the American forces because the packaging of the cigarettes was unique. On the back of a pack of 20 was a silhouette of a war aeroplane. Us modern day urchins would collect these silhouettes and exchange our duplicates at school. Anyone got any? They are worth big money today! German aeroplanes were now few and far between. Our skies were full of our aeroplanes, we would again see vapour trails in the sky but these were now being made by the American B17s known as the Flying Fortresses that were bombing the hell out of Germany. This little story is to me still unbelievable. I was visiting my brother-in-law in Florida when I heard this aeroplane; straight away I knew it was a Flying Fortress. I had time to go to my car and get my camera before it came close enough to verify my thoughts. I could not believe how slow it was flying and how small it was.
ING THE WAR - GERALD ANDREWS (Part 3) Nearer to the ground, we would see the C47, Douglas Dakotas towing gliders. One broke loose, and where did it come down? New Pound beside the B2133 and it landed in one piece. That was a fait accompli because many of the large fields had concrete obstacles placed in them to thwart a landing by the enemy. Just a mile or so north at Round Street, a long field just north of the Drungewick junction had these concrete obstacles placed in it. Meanwhile, the Germans had developed a flying bomb which was referred to by three different names Buzz Bomb, Doodle Bug and V1, I mentioned the V1 briefly when one came down on Naldretts Farm and said that they looked like a small aeroplane with a distinctive engine note. We did have a V1 pilotless plane (which in 37 essence was a flying bomb) came down on Naldretts Farm and purportedly killed a cow. The build up was taking place but of course we did not know that. The bombing of London had stopped. On the 5th of June 1944, and sworn to secrecy, 11 Mitchell’s flew out of Dunsfold to bomb targets around Caen. The next morning, as you all know, was D Day. You may wonder what happened to my brother. Well, when you got to 14 years of age you left school and went to get a job at the Ministry of Works. There they would tell you where you had to work, and I must add you could not leave without their permission. If Andy had stayed he would have finished up working on a farm which he did not want to do. Andy returned home to Peckham Rye and started his working life in a factory. I wish to thank Richard Bairstow for giving me the chance and privilege of contributing to your magazine and to Denzil Peacock for his contribution. Finally, I wish to dedicate the articles to Mr and Mrs Skinner who gave me so much love, which I was not aware of until it was too late. Gerald Andrews Richard B

The Gardener’s Calendar
by Ian Clemens
Continue earthing-up potatoes and harden off outdoor
tomatoes, courgettes and pumpkins for planting early next month.
Thin out direct-sown vegetables such as spinach,
carrot and lettuce seedlings then water the rows well.
Plant out brassicas and leeks to their final positions. Weed around your onions and garlic to reduce competition for
nutrients and water. Applying an onion fertiliser will boost growth.
Hang pheromone traps in plum and apple trees. Surround strawberries with straw to protect fruit and net them to
keep birds off.
Erect netting around your soft fruit plants to prevent birds eating
your crop.
Remove blossom and fruits from newly planted fruit trees to allow
them to establish properly during their first year.
Take cuttings of tender perennials such as Fuchsia, Argyranthemum
and Pelargoniums (geraniums).
Harden off half-hardy plants by leaving them outside during the day
and bringing back under cover at night for 7 to 10 days before planting outdoors.
Don't be tempted to cut down or tie up the foliage of spring-
flowering bulbs, let them die down naturally.
WG Village Hall Update First of all, I want to thank the WG Sideshows Committee for its very generous donation towards the Hall modernisation project. Whilst it is very sad to see the end of a long standing and well-loved local organisation, the donation to the Hall is most welcome. As for the project itself, there is little to report this month as we continue to progress with updating the plans in preparation for a formal planning application to Chichester District Council. I shall report further progress as and when needed. Keith Carter Chairman, Village Hall Management Committee

She told us about her early life, training, travelling and finally running her own tree surgery business and employing other women tree surgeons. She gave us an insight into her work along with some funny situations. She also gave us some useful tips to look for when employing a tree surgeon. Our next meeting will be at the Sports Pavilion on May 4th when we will be discussing the resolutions that will be put to the Annual Meeting in June. These are: This meeting calls on every WI and the NFWI to work alongside health and social care providers and their local community to raise awareness of the causes and impacts of loneliness, thus ensuring better identification of lonely people in order to be able to offer them the appropriate assistance and support. Microplastic fibres are shed from synthetic clothing with every wash and are the main contributors to microplastic contamination of the oceans. Wisborough Green Rainfall for March was 101mm – (last year 108mm - 9 yr average 54mm). Most of this amount fell in the first week of March. At time of writing (April 14th) only 2mm so far for April – the ground is already dry and cracking. Not a good sign. The coldest March in the UK since 1962 and colder than any of the preceding winter months. At least we managed to avoid the coldest March night – minus 12.9°C - at Aboyne in Aberdeenshire. Highest for the month was 17.5°C Trawsgoed, Ceredigion. A somewhat dismal March as sunshine was only 76% of the mean. For the second month running sunworshippers should have been in the north of Scotland – Tiree, Inner Hebrides! Weathervane
