Pastoral Letter Now the Lord God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden; and there he put the Man he had formed. Genesis 2:8 This month we shall be having two garden events in the village. First a ‘Vicarage Garden Party’ on Friday 11th May, 2.30-4.30pm to raise funds for St. Peter’s Triple Mission (Family Support Work across Sussex, the Aegean Solidarity Network and YWAM - Youth with a Mission, Uganda) - see poster on page 31. Secondly ‘Open Gardens’ here in Wisborough Green on Sunday 27th and Monday 28th May with teas available in St. Peter’s on both days from 2pm. It is hoped that both these events will be well supported by folk locally - so please book the dates now! Gardens have been part of human existence for thousands of years and are mentioned throughout the Bible. They took a variety of forms from majestic royal gardens with fruit trees and highly scented flowers and herbs for consumption and medicinal purposes, to the more humble cultivated plot where a variety of fruit and vegetables were grown. Gardens also played a significant part in God’s plan for our creation and ultimate redemption. The Garden of Eden in the book of Genesis was where God placed Adam and Eve, not a barren wasteland, but a fruitful garden, showing God’s generosity to his children. There in the middle of the garden was the Tree of Life 5 upon which hung the forbidden fruit, which became too great a temptation to the inhabitants! After their fall from grace and banishment from the garden, toil and tribulation was to follow them and humankind. The fall was not atoned until Jesus went to the Garden of Gethsemane the night before he died and was betrayed, led away and was crucified upon the tree of Calvary that became the new tree of life for those who would follow Him. This second Adam was buried in the garden tomb and rose on that first Easter Day only to be mistaken as the gardener by a friend who did not yet know the power of the resurrection, until ‘the gardener’ said, “Mary”. This same Jesus quietly says our name too if we listen for his voice. Dorothy Frances Gurney, hymn writer and poet, had a poem published in Country Life in 1913, which included the following lines: “The kiss of the sun for pardon, The song of the birds for mirth, One is nearer God’s heart in a garden Than anywhere else on earth.” We look forward to seeing you in a garden or two during May. Clive and Marion

From the Registers (March) Baptism:

We welcome into the Lord’s family Jude Linton, who was baptised at St. Peter’s on Sunday 25th March 2018.

Petworth Area Churches Together (PACT) - working together in harmony

PACT had a most successful Palm Sunday Procession around the streets of Petworth. In cloudy but dry conditions we gathered in front of the Sacred Heart RC Church in Angel Street, Petworth with Father Peter Newsam welcoming us. The Petworth Town Band led us along the streets as we sang hymns. Outside the United Reformed Church ( URC) in Golden Square, we heard a re-telling of the Passion Story from the Bible. Then we crossed into Market Square stopping by the Post Office where we heard a further part of the story. Essential crowd participation here as the children shouted: "Hosanna to the Son of David!"; the Men shouted : "Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!"; and the Ladies shouted: "Hosanna in the highest!". Moving on to St. Mary's Parish Church, we gathered in front of the south door and heard the final piece, with a Blessing being given by Canon Mark Gilbert, Rector. Mr Darcy the donkey, now 20 years old, lead the Procession and was kindly lent by Elaine Whitcombe of Kirdford. Gerald Gresham Cooke

Prayer Prayer Group and Quiet Mornings If anyone would like to spend half an hour in fellowship and prayer then they are most welcome on a Tuesday at 4.30pm, when prayers are said for the life of the Parish. Contact Wendy Duff on 700295 for details of venue. On the third Friday of every month Quiet Mornings are held at the home of Wendy Duff at 10.30am. It is a peaceful time when you can relax, recharge your batteries and listen to music, poetry, readings and prayers. You will come away refreshed and ready to carry on! Please contact Wendy Duff on 700295 for details.

Chain of Prayer Worried about a loved one, a friend or yourself and would like prayers to be said by a chain of people? Contact Wendy 700295 or Gillian 700157 and they will start the chain by contacting the person next to them on the list and so it goes all the way round. A copy of the chain is on the notice board at the back of church. Prayer is a powerful and important part of life and one should never under estimate its effect. You don't need to give any details of the problem just ask for prayers to be said and it will happen. Please note that it will be treated with total confidentiality.

Prayers are offered for parishioners who are in special need, especially the sick and frail. Please advise either of the churchwardens of any persons or situations you would like remembered in this way. 7 All those living in particular roads are prayed for regularly, the whole parish being covered over a 12-week cycle: Week beginning:

From the Editor Welcome to another packed edition of Ad Vincula. I hope you all had a good Easter break. I have had to leave out “Ad Vincula on its travels” this month due to lack of space (and only having one entry!). Do please remember to take your copy with you and keep sending your pictures in. This month, I would just highlight:  Village Hall needs your skills (p17)  WSCC’s dogged determination to demolish Boxal Bridge (p19)  Plea for people to learn bellringing for the Armistice 100 commemoration (p21)  Purple Bus returns to Wisborough Green (p25)  WSCC Bus Strategy Consultation (p41) Finally, don’t forget to join the Facebook Group WG Noticeboard. I hope you will find something of interest and do please keep all your articles, comments and photos coming to me at editor@stpeterswg.org.uk. A BIG thank you to the litter pickers Armed with a stick, gloves and bags, an enthusiastic team of litter pickers spring cleaned the village on Saturday 7th April. They delved deep into bushes and ditches along our village roads and removed a staggering fifteen bags of rubbish. The next session will be organised in early October, but in the meantime, can we please encourage you all to do your bit to keep our village clean over the summer months. The Parish Council is delighted that the dog bag dispenser is being used, but we do seem to be getting through bags at an alarming rate! Can we please request that you continue to provide your own bags and that these bags are just used for the village area, otherwise the dispenser could be empty when there is a need on the Green! Thank you. On the dog poo front, to encourage picking up, CDC has recently promoted the use of litterbins for disposal. However, the litterbins in front of the Pavilion are for Pavilion use and not emptied by the District Council; the inclusion of dog poo bags is rather unpleasant for the Pavilion staff who empty. Please do NOT use these bins for dog waste, but use the black litterbins or the dog waste bins around the Green which are all emptied weekly by the District Council at a cost to the Parish. Thank you. Wisborough Green Parish Council

Wisborough Green Primary School News As part of our new topic 'Listen to Us', we would like to hold a careers event. To help our older children start to think about their future aspirations they need to be inspired to enter the world of work. If you have an 'interesting' vocation that you would like to share with our children then we would love to hear from you. Mrs Davies is also looking for students who have previously attended Wisborough Green School, to share their successes since leaving primary school. Please use the following email to contact the school office if you think you can help us out- we would love to hear from you. office@wisboroughgreenschool.org.uk Our plea for new books for our school library was a huge success. We have some amazing books for the children and staff to read and we would like to thank everyone for their generous donations. A surprise bag of books, all wrapped up beautifully, was delivered to us before Easter. There were cheers of delight, in our assembly, as each package was unwrapped to reveal some exciting new titles for us to enjoy. Thank you to Dandelion Farewells for their very kind and thoughtful gift to us. The secret garden has blossomed into a beautiful creation over the past few weeks. Our team of incredible volunteers, organised by Chris Bryant - a parent of the school, worked through the Easter break to transform the outdoor space. A HUGE thank you goes out to the team, who gave up their time to support this great project. We can't wait to share our gorgeous garden with the local community on Sunday 27 th May, for the Wisborough Green Open Gardens. Please come and visit us to see how our 11 garden grows. To celebrate 250 years of the circus this year, we will be joined by Wisborough's local circus 'Cirque Normandie' at our Summer Festival. Every child will have an opportunity to learn some circus skills and a special blessing ceremony is being planned in the big top. The greatest show men and women are really coming to town on 16 th and 17th June, so please save the date! This is another brilliant fundraising opportunity for the school and every ticket purchased will make a big difference to us. Please visit our website or follow us on Twitter #WGPS864 to get further information about ticket sales (See p 21). This summer promises to be another fun filled term for everyone at Wisborough Green Primary School - we hope you can join us to share the joy. Visit our website for more info: http://www.wisboroughgreenschool.org.uk or follow us on Twitter - @WGPS864

Warm regards, Amanda Harrison, Head Teacher 01403 700280

EASTER LILIES - THANK YOU! To all who donated to our appeal for help with the purchase of Easter lilies, a heartfelt thank you from the flower team. You gave most generously and contributed to the church looking lovely on Easter Day. With grateful thanks. Maggie Edwards

Nature Notes When I’m outside I spend a lot of time looking upwards in search of birds, but sometimes there are delights at ground level. For instance, Champions drive is a joy just now – daffodils and primroses galore, wood anemones, celandines, violets, and the first bluebells colouring up too. Then I spotted what looked like small yellow flowers in a garden nearby. They were little grasses – less than three inches high, with the sun catching their tiny seed pods and turning them to gold. When I got home I found a few amongst our grass too – and I’d never noticed them! So, grasses masquerading as garden flowers. We’ll leave a patch unmown and see what they do next. Back to my birds! As I write there are still no chiff chaffs here. Usually they’re calling continuously from early March, but lots are at the RSPB, so I’ll have to get down to Pulborough to hear them – and to hear the nightingales, singing in the daytime!! Most of our usual garden birds are busy now and the woodpeckers are decimating the nut feeders. They’ve nested in the same oak tree every year since we moved in, and, since we put up feeders, our annual treat is to watch the youngsters learning to get the nuts out. It takes them a while to get the hang of it – in every sense of the word! Luckily the parents are extremely patient. The longtailed tits are another delight. They come in a gang and cling all over the fat balls, their absolute favourite food. And we had a brief 13 visit from a lovely pair of bullfinches, but sadly they’ve moved on. Up in Bedham there’s been sightings of a jack snipe - and quite a few redpolls too. Also up there, a friend was brushing off his horses’ winter coats - by next morning the birds had taken all the loose hair for their nests. And later he saw a cow sitting calmly in the field with several jackdaws pulling out any old tufts on its back. Nature in harmony, perfect! Some other natural harmonies don’t always feel so jolly. Foxes have to feed their cubs - and pheasants are quite a favourite with them it seems. We’ve spotted a handsome fox several times recently, and very sadly I’ve not seen my injured pheasant chum for over a week. At least, if he was taken by the fox, the cubs had a good nourishing meal, after all those suet sprinkles and sunflower hearts! But I do miss my feathered friend - dashing lopsidedly towards me every morning. Lastly, a few days ago, Jim had a fantastic sighting of our sparrowhawk, as it dived into a spindly bush right below the bedroom window. It scattered all the small birds and gave Jim great views as it posed among the bare branches. No phone to hand, he was disappointed not to catch a picture, but later that day, in a surprise email, I received this great photo! So, thank you, Rosie E! Sue J

Church Sponsored Activities Wizzy Tots Wizzy Tots, Wisborough Green’s baby and toddler group, meets at the Village Hall every Tuesday during term time from 9.30 to 11.00 am. If you haven’t yet experienced the delights of Xpresso, come and enjoy freshly ground Fairtrade coffee or tea with a delectable homemade cake! Xpresso is open every Friday during term time from 9am ‘til 11.30am in the Village Hall Vine Room (during church building works) and EVERYONE is welcome!

Village Care Scheme 14

The St. Peter’s Village Care Team meets regularly and its aims are to give help and support to the residents of Wisborough Green in as many ways as possible. This includes visiting people who are housebound, in hospitals or in nursing homes, and comforting those who are suffering from illness, bereavement, loneliness etc. We also provide (through the West Sussex County Council) a free library service for those who are unable to leave their homes. Each team member is responsible for looking after an area of the village, for welcoming new arrivals, and for giving friendly advice. We produce “Welcome to Wisborough Green Cards” containing useful information which are always delivered personally. When appropriate, we send out cards on the first anniversaries of Baptism and Confirmation, and for bereavements. We are always open to suggestions and new ideas to help the community. Please feel free to contact Angela Craddock on 01403 700336 for any enquiries.

Village Car Service The Village Car Service, a part of the St Peter’s Village Care Scheme (see above), has now been in operation for over fifteen years. It provides transport to Doctor’s and Dentist’s surgeries and local hospitals on request. There is no charge for this service but donations are invited from passengers as these are ploughed back into the Team’s budget to pay petrol expenses to the volunteer drivers. The service is co-ordinated by Jennie Burr (tel:01403 700607). We have a dedicated team of drivers and are extremely grateful to them all, but always need new recruits to cover busy periods. If anyone is interested in driving for the village please contact Angela Craddock on 01403 700336.

Dying Matters Awareness Week: 14-20th May Dying Matters is a national initiative to promote public awareness of dying, death and bereavement. Two of our local funeral directors are running events in support of this.

DYING MATTERS... …Which is why Dandelion Farewells (independent funeral director) has partnered with charities, suppliers and other professionals to bring you a unique ‘one stop’ Resources Fair to help inform, reassure and prepare you for the possibility of needing to arrange a funeral for yourself or a loved one.

Come and join us at Wisborough Green Village Hall on Tuesday 15th May 1.30-4.30pm The success of our ongoing community information events has highlighted important questions that people need answering. We are hosting this Fair to provide an opportunity for you to find out more, in an informal and relaxed setting. Light refreshments provided and free information will be available to take away with you. There are no false incentives or elements to sign up or subscribe to but there will be professionals and volunteers who will gladly and generously give their time to answer your questions, share their knowledge and afford you peace of mind. There is no charge or requirement to book ahead. Dandelion Farewells is totally transparent and open about the processes, procedures and, indeed, myths which surround death and dying. We are passionate about educating the public so that they may be more informed and, therefore, empowered to make the necessary arrangements most appropriate for them and their loved one when someone dies. An event is taking place at Freeman Brothers, High Street, Billingshurst on Tuesday 15 May 2018 as part of the nationwide annual Dying Matters Awareness Week. The firm recognises that talking about death and bereavement is challenging and this 'Big Deal, Small Talk' event will feature the opportunity to get free expert advice on funeral planning, and discussing your wishes with your loved ones. The goal is to create a friendly space for people to ask questions about funerals, with professionals on hand to offer free advice. Although the event is being run in a drop-in format, if you wish to make an appointment to speak to the team regarding something specific, please get in touch. The event will run from 11am until 2pm, there will be giveaways for those who choose to make advance choices about their funeral wishes, and refreshments available to all visitors. Full details of what will be on offer are available via the following Eventbrite page: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/big-deal-small-talk-tickets-42079708541 Freeman Brothers' Billingshurst Branch Manager Martin Mitchell said, “This is a first for us, but we’ve seen all the other events taking place across the country and we think there’s a need for it here. Talking about death can be a bit awkward at first, but it is something we all have to face. We’re excited to reach out to the community and help make some changes in how these conversations take place.” The team look forward to welcoming you in their Billingshurst branch on 15 May!

Village Hall News At time of writing, we are still awaiting the planning decision. The statutory notice period is about to expire and, thus far, no further objections have been raised in relation to our plans. We are therefore hopeful that we shall soon receive the green light! Now will come the difficult bit. Delivering the project for the community. In anticipation, the core project team met recently to discuss how to proceed once we do receive planning consent. The most important decision that the team has taken is that we shall tackle the project in phases so that we can keep the hall in operation, with somewhat reduced facilities, for most of the implementation period. This will minimise the period when we have to close the hall completely as well as providing much needed time and space to secure the best possible outcome for each phase and more time to obtain the additional funding that we need to complete the whole project. The core project team is small – only 5 people – and there is a lot of work to be done, specifying the non-construction requirements. (Our architect will complete the specification for the construction work.)

WE NEED YOUR HELP! This is an unique opportunity to help create an enduring, relevant and modern centre for the community that can be enjoyed by generations to come. If you have any skills or knowledge relevant to any of the following areas or are willing to help in any other way, please contact myself (700502) or Louise Davies (700689) :  Interior Design & Materials (soft furnishings/ furniture/ sanitary ware)  Energy (power, heating & thermal efficiency)  Kitchen/catering design  Lighting design  Sound system design  Technology & Security design  Sponsorship opportunities from local (and not so local) businesses Your time, skills and knowledge will be greatly appreciated. Hopefully, I will be able to confirm a positive decision from Chichester DC in the next Ad Vincula. Keith Carter, Chairman, Village Hall Management Committee

Update Boxal Bridge Historic England (HE) listed Boxal Bridge Grade II in mid January 2018 and there was a 28 day period in which people could comment so it was accepted on 14 February. Thus it came as a shock to learn on 27 March that WSCC has challenged this decision and has applied to DE-list the bridge. They stated that they never received an email informing them of the opportunity to comment…..but they haven’t referred to the letter which was then sent by HE when they realised the email hadn’t arrived. Given the Easter period and a phone call to those involved in listing we have currently until 30 April to mount a case for retaining the listing. It clearly remains under threat. To that end KKWG has launched an Appeal to retain the services of a Historic Buildings Consultant to challenge the DE-listing. If you wish to contribute, amounts can be sent straight to the KKWG bank account Sort Code 30-94-41 Account No. 41666168 or by cheque made out to KKWG and sent to KKWG c/o 'Crofts" Kirdford Road, Wisborough Green RH14 0JH. All donations will be very much appreciated. Jill Sutcliffe, Chair KKWG, 01403 700395 or jillsutcliffe1@gmail.com

The Parishes Wildlife Group After the magical talk about meadows given in March, there will be a MEADOWS VISIT on 14 June, either at 10.30 am or 6 pm courtesy of Michael and Jane Joseph, Woodlands Farm Cottage, Adversane, Billingshurst, RH14 9JG. At Adversane, take the single track lane beside the telephone/post box in Lordings Road. Follow for 1 mile to the very end. (GPS only takes you half way). Please let me know if you intend to go and confirm whether morning (which is preferable as the majority of flowers will be open) or early evening. Many thanks. Look out for posters in the villages and inserts in the local press for our Moth event led by local experts Dave and Penny Green, date to be agreed. ROLL UP ROLL UP - THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH COMES TO WISBOROUGH Plans are well under way now to celebrate 250 years of British circus at this year’s Wisborough Green Primary School Summer Festival. Of course we don’t do things by halves at WGPS, so what better way to embrace that theme than by hosting a real live circus! Britain’s premier French circus, Cirque Normandie, just happen to be based in Wisborough Green and have generously agreed to stage 4 special performances in the village over the Summer Festival weekend from 15 th to 17th June. Kicking off with a Friday evening show, this will be followed by two afternoon shows at the Festival itself, before a grand finale on Sunday afternoon to celebrate Father’s Day. Tickets will be sold in aid of Wisborough Green Primary School and at just £9 per ticket for a 2 hour show, we think that represents great value for money for a family day out. Cirque Normandie will also be providing Circus Skills Workshops for all of the children at the school, as well as surrounding villages completely free, providing a memorable and unique opportunity for everyone. The big top will be erected on the Village Green for the entire week, and we would like to say thank you to the Parish Council for allowing us this fantastic opportunity. All of the regular Summer Festival fun will also feature as normal with the traditional May procession and Maypole dancing, lots of fun and games, top quality refreshments courtesy of local businesses and suppliers, live music from 5.00pm and of course our Summer Festival market featuring local and artisan producers in abundance. We’ll even have our very own special Wisborough Green gin cocktail courtesy of the Gin Tin who will donate £2 per cocktail sold on the day to our funds. Tickets will be on sale soon with full details to follow. OPPORTUNITIES FOR LOCAL BUSINESSES TO GET INVOLVED We are expecting the Festival to be busier than ever this year, and there are lots of ways for local companies to get involved through programme advertising, sponsorship, donating prizes for the the grand prize draw or taking a stall. But hurry - the copy deadline is 10th May. Contact Heidi Lang on 07753 223907 or email: wisboroughgreenschoolpta@gmail.com for more information. Heidi Lang

‘Dos, Don’ts, Moans & Groans’ I have had three moans this month all regarding DOG POO. Firstly my wife and I nearly tripped over a very large lump left on the footpath at the corner on the Cricks cross roads, secondly it is being left on the village green in several locations PLEASE DOG OWNERS keep an eye on your dog and pick it up. The final moan on this from the Pavilion Staff who have to empty the waste bins Please do not put your DOG POO in these bins it is disgusting!! please use the bins provided on the green for the proper disposal of the waste. Good news on the Highways repairs they have done them at last. I am not sure how long it will last as they have done a real botched job on them (see photo). I have complained about the repairs and await an answer. Please e-mail me at kenvickery@hotmail.co.uk with anything that you feel happy or unhappy with. People do read this and take note so please help me to help the village. Ken V

Ringing for Peace - Armistice 100 In November 2017, an exciting new campaign was launched to recruit 1,400 new bell ringers to participate in the 2018 Armistice Day commemoration. 2018 will be the centenary of the end of World War I, in which more than 50 Sussex ringers lost their lives. Church bells across the UK remained restricted throughout the course of the war and only rang freely once Armistice was declared on 11 November 1918. We are very short of ringers here in Wisborough Green and hope to attract new learners: many people are looking for new challenges and new ways of getting fit - this could be the way! The SCACR is already starting to plan how Sussex ringers can commemorate and celebrate this occasion. For more background information see the Sussex County Association of Change Ringers website (scacr.org). Please contact Val Mourilyan on 01403 700089 or Jamie Daniell on 01403 752846 for more details and to register your interest.

Wisborough Gre Football Club Well, a difficult time to report. The season is nearly over but the 1 st XI still have 8 games to go as I am writing this. The pitch has been totally unplayable for all of January, February and March due to the spiking that took place in the autumn. They have unfortunately been relegated this season but that might not have been a surprise having been promoted for the last 3 seasons in a row. The 2nd XI still have 8 games to go as well and also look as if they may be relegated this season. Let's hope they manage a few wins and survive. We all look forward to a successful season next year and hopefully 2 teams playing again. For Club fixtures please check the web site www.full-time.thefa.com. This is not always reliable but is the best place to look for fixtures. Cricket Club Winter nets have happened for the Seniors and Colts at Cranleigh School. By the time you read this, nets should have started on a Thursday and Friday evening on the Green . Please contact James Sadler if you would like to attend and he will give you details. The 2018 season starts the last weekend in April. First league games coming up first weekend in May. 1st XI playing in Division 5 and 2nd XI playing in Division 8 of the Sussex Cricket League. 26

RunWisborough 13th May 2018 What a great day we had last year! Thankfully, the weather was a little cooler and let’s pray the rain stays away again this year. The run is slightly later this year due to the bank holiday and we are once again raising funds for the new Pavilion. We expect about 600 runners this year with about 200 children in the colour run around the Green. The course will be pretty much as it was last year but we’ve removed the leg up to the church which some of the faster runners felt had too many tight turns and got congested. Instead, we have an extended loop northwards on Durbans Road. Our race management company, NiceWork, have advised that for the safety of runners, marshals and spectators we must have some road closures put in place. We have had a couple of instances where marshals at the extremities of the course have been physically threatened so having proper road closure notifications and diversions should ensure this doesn’t occur. We hope that this will cause as little inconvenience to residents as possible and ask for your patience and support. The closures will mainly affect through traffic which will be diverted away from the course. Importantly, residents will still be allowed access in and out of their properties but there may be similar delays as previous years while the main body of runners passes. The affected roads are Durbans Road, Kirdford Road (up to Skiff Lane) and Newpound Road (up to Fishers Farm). We are excited to announce that The Blues Issue will be playing live from the Pavilion balcony to wrap up the event in lively style – thank you - The Blues Issue! As usual, in addition to the 5k and 10k runs there will be a kid’s colour run, sponsored by Fishers Farm, for children aged from 4 to 10 and a bouncy castle (proceeds to the Scouts). There will be plenty of food and refreshments for runners and spectators alike so we encourage everyone to come along and enjoy the day! We are lucky to have all of our previous years’ sponsors supporting us again; Lynn Murray & Co, Dairy Crest, AirWave, BozHolidays, Village Shop to name a few. They are joined by new sponsors Christ’s Hospital School (Gold Sponsor), BluecoatSports, Meadow Arts and Katherine Finn among others. We really hope we can replicate the success of previous years so fingers crossed the weather is as good. Support along the route really helps add to the atmosphere so please come out to cheer people on from your front gardens if you can’t get to the Green! Finally, if you’re not running (there’s still time to enter!), but can help on the day please drop me a line at info@runwisborough.co.uk or call me on 01403 700727. Michael Gadd, Secretary WGSA

Whether you’re a runner or a walker (Run Wisborough) don’t forget to sign our Wedding Card for Prince Harry and Megan Markel, which we will be creating during our Royal Wedding themed service. Other activities we have planned are: the opportunity to decorate an individual wedding cake and fly a model of Prince Harry’s helicopter and launch a rocket to celebrate! During our Good Friday Time For God service (30th March 2018) we created individual Good Friday gardens, made Easter cards, decorated Easter biscuits and coloured a frieze on the events of Holy Week and Easter day. The service concluded with refreshments including hot cross buns.

Playing in the Snow - Remember March? After a very snowy Friday, and one of a handful of schools that didn't close, the children took advantage of the laying snow on the Village Green after school. It was lovely to watch the children and Spaniel enjoy a spontaneous snowball fightthrowing snowballs for the dog to unsuccessfully catch - children being outdoors playing…. Donna Pont

Recipe of the Month PEPPERMINT BROWNIES Who doesn’t love a decent chocolate brownie?! Soft and gooey inside with a slightly crunchy topping! This recipe simply suggests adding peppermint flavouring but if not a mint chocolate fan, swap in orange, almond or rose essence instead.

Ingredients  200g (7 oz) butter, plus extra to grease  150g (5 oz) dark chocolate, roughly chopped  275g (10 oz) light brown soft sugar  2 large eggs  1 tsp vanilla extract  150g (5 oz) plain flour  Few drops peppermint extract, to taste (or flavouring of your choice)  Sifted icing sugar, to decorate

Method 1. To make the brownie, preheat oven to 180 C (160 C fan) or mark 4. Grease and line a 20.5 cm (8”) square tin with baking parchment. In a large pan, gently heat 33 the butter and chocolate until melted. 2. Take pan off the heat and mix in sugar, followed by the eggs and vanilla (the mixture will become smooth and glossy as you mix). Sift over the flour and stir in the peppermint (if using or other flavouring) until well combined. Pour the mixture into the tin and bake for 25-30 mins until a crust forms. Cool completely in tin. 3. Lift the brownie out of its tin and cut into 16 squares. Arrange the pieces on a wire rack set over a baking tray or board, dust with icing sugar and serve warm or at room temperature with vanilla ice-cream, if you like. Wisborough Green History - JAMES E In this, the final part, the fabrication of the coachwork, electrical work, painting, etc. by the engineering department follows on from the details of the trimming department last month . . . Whilst in the early days Jim's business did the trimming and carpeting of vintage Bentleys, he gradually extended his skills to include renovation and repair to parts of the coachwork until he was able to fabricate and rebuild an entire car, excluding of course the actual mechanical parts such as engine, gearbox and transmission. Nowadays this function is covered by the engineering department and comprises roughly two thirds of the company's business. It covers the fabrication of the car’s bodywork, hood and wiring followed by repainting and road testing. Before the building of new coachwork or effecting a repair can begin, a full size drawing is needed. The coachwork consists of a framework of high quality seasoned ash; this is used as it has a high load resistance, is flexible and less inclined to split than similar timber. The framework is constructed piece by piece on the chassis according to the drawing and then covered in plywood or aluminium panelling to complete the body 36 shape. Much machining is required especially where doors have to be constructed and to fit perfectly. Mahogany type redwoods are used for polished interior woodwork. Birch plywood is used for the construction of the seating and interior work including trim panels. All of this work has to be completed before the trimming can be undertaken. The hood is reconstructed and usually recovered in mohair hooding that is both durable and resilient being considered superior to the original cotton based fabric. There are many areas where metal working is required in the production of running boards, mudguards, tool boxes, etc. using steel or aluminium. Brass is also used where parts are cast for the windscreen and other fittings. The photos show Duncan Tamplin tackling a Bentley chassis and a part completed Bentley. The electrical equipment and wiring need to be installed. Whilst this is nothing like as complex as that fitted to modern cars, the electronics are of an obsolete technology using such devices as magnetos and dynamos although when cleaned and adjusted will give years of further service due in part to the high production standards of the time. The wiring itself has to be tailored to suit each individual vehicle and completed using authentic cotton braided cable. All cables are plain black on early cars and faults can be difficult to trace and locate. Wiring designs are based on original wiring diagrams, adapted to allow for additional fitments, such as indictors and engine cooling fans. A popular addition to the circuitry is an Auxiliary socket for a modern sat-nav or mobile phone charger.

E PEARCE (SUSSEX) LTD (Concluded) The chassis and coachwork fittings are repaired or fabricated on the premises using original patterns. Original instruments are in short supply and their internal components are difficult and time consuming to repair. Fortunately many cars have retained their original existing instruments and these are easily renovated by removing the dials to clean the glass and paint the rims. Sometimes instruments have to be sent to a specialist repairer when further repairs or calibration is required. After all of the rebuilding is completed, the cars are repainted. Modern paints are generally used as they are more durable although the traditional cellulose paints are still available. Most of the painting is undertaken away from the premises although the paintwork for minor repairs is completed in-house. Colour schemes are very important and great care is taken to choose the correct colour combination to suit the original finish as getting a match with existing faded paintwork can be difficult. Road testing is an important part of the repair or renovation to detect any minor problems. David takes personal responsibility for this; the distance required varies considerably depending on the type of work 37 that has been undertaken. It's often just a short drive locally but occasionally a longer running-in period is required that can be as much as 500 miles. After all is well, the customer visits prior to completion to sign-off and agree the work that has been undertaken. This will often involve a test drive, followed by afternoon tea and a chat with all staff involved. At this stage a photographic record of the restoration progress is presented as a record of the work completed. The photos show Jack Bonniface silver soldering a windscreen and lastly, David and James Pearce. This description of the engineering work brings the series to an end. It has covered the history of Butts Works from its beginning in the 1920s until Jim took over in 1969 and then up to the present day. Jim and David currently have over a hundred years coach building expertise between them and from the early days they have enjoyed many happy times working with a highly skilled and supportive team. Customers have become friends and Jim and David are most grateful for the valued support of their employees, neighbours and villagers over the years. Although David now runs the company, supported by his managers Duncan Tamplin and Barry Harvey, Jim is on hand for advice when required and has plenty of vintage motoring experiences to share.  Continue earthing-up potatoes and harden off outdoor tomatoes, courgettes and pumpkins for planting early next month.  Thin out direct-sown vegetables such as spinach, carrot and lettuce seedlings then water the rows well.  Plant out brassicas and leeks to their final positions.  Weed around your onions and garlic to reduce competition for nutrients and water. Applying an onion fertiliser will boost growth.  Hang pheromone traps in plum and apple trees.  Surround strawberries with straw to protect fruit and net them to keep birds off.  Erect netting around your soft fruit plants to prevent birds eating your crop.  Remove blossom and fruits from newly planted fruit trees to allow them to establish properly during their first year.  Take cuttings of tender perennials such as Fuchsia, Argyranthemum and Pelargoniums (geraniums).  Harden off half-hardy plants by leaving them outside during the day and bringing back under cover at night for 7 to 10 days before planting outdoors.  Don't be tempted to cut down or tie up the foliage of spring-flowering bulbs, let them die down naturally.

Bus Strategy Consultation Have your say The county council is developing a new bus strategy to explore ways in which we can work with bus companies and other partners to help sustain and improve services. We would like to hear opinions on our proposals for the new strategy and if there is anything else people think we should include. This feedback will inform our approach to and investment in bus services and community transport between 2018 and 2026. Further information and the online questionnaire is available at www.westsussex.gov.uk/buses or by calling 01243 642105 for an information pack. The closing date for the consultation is 6 June, 2018

WI Report For our April meeting on the 5th about two dozen (24 for the millennials!) keen dancers were taught how to jive by Stacey and her partner. I don’t think Strictly need worry but we all had a good time and actually looked like we knew how to do it at the end. The meeting was rounded off by Stacey and partner giving a demonstration of how it should be done! Our next meeting on the 3rd May will be to discuss the resolution ‘Mental Health Matters’. The NFWI urges all WI members to recognise the importance of parity between mental health and physical health and take action to make it as acceptable to talk about mental health issues as much as physical health issues, and to lobby government for better support for mental illness. I hope you all have a good think about this one and read up about the resolution in the April edition of WI Life for more information. See you there. All potential members are welcome. Weather Watch Wisborough Green rainfall for March was 94mm (last year 108mm – 10 yr average 59mm). Over the UK as a whole it was the wettest March for 10 years. We are all aware it needs to dry up – at time of writing (April 14th) the spring has hardly been spring-like!

49

Early in March the Beast from the East and the mini Beast certainly caused widespread disruption elsewhere. Warmest temperature for March was 16.6°c at Colwyn Bay in Wales. Again as I write I don’t think we have reached that which is surely unusual for the first half of April. So for May. “Ne’er cast a clout till May is out”. Does May mean the month or does it mean the Hawthorn flower (known as May)? Not sure – but I do remember in 1976 we had snow on the first day of June and flaming June by the end of the week! . Weathervane

Village Hall 50 Club Draw The winner of the April Draw is Mrs B Green who wins £50 The winner of the second prize of £20 is Grace Carter The May draw will be at 6.30 pm on Wednesday 9 May at the Three Crowns and any member or prospective member who would like to attend will be very welcome. After running the 50 Club for ten years I am looking to pass it on to another member of the community so if anyone is interested, please contact me. Ruth Andrews, 01403 700671

SMALL CRAFT INVITED TO JOIN RIVER RALLY Canoeists, kayakers and small boat owners have been invited to join a friendly flotilla exploring the River Arun. The occasion is the annual rally on the waterway between Pulborough and Pallingham Quay organised by the Wey & Arun Canal Trust. This year’s event is on Sunday, 13th May, celebrating the long tradition of boats navigating a river which was once part of a route from London to the South Coast. “We were delighted with last year’s event and we had a colourful array of small craft travelling along the Arun,” said Trust chairman Sally Schupke. “It was a fun event and everyone enjoyed themselves. Lots of canoeists said that they wouldn’t have thought of venturing on the river by themselves, but in a group it made it a lot more enjoyable.” The Arun is tidal as far as Pallingham Bridge and the rally date has been chosen to ensure the tide is high enough for small craft to navigate a picturesque section of the waterway. The aim is to reach the site of the original junction of the canal with the river and then go on to Pallingham Bridge, the limit of the river’s tidal section. The 15th century Stopham Bridge is another historic feature on the route. Launching at Pulborough is planned from 11.15am to midday onwards at Pulborough for small boats which need to use the slipway there. At Stopham bridge it will be from 12-12.45pm to take advantage of the rising tide. There will be a break at Pallingham Quay and, if time and water levels permit, participants can also stop for refreshments at the White Hart by Stopham Bridge. Those who would like to join the rally you can book places online at https://weyarun.org.uk/ events35 or email rallies@weyandarun.co.uk.

Wey & Arun Canal Trust’s annual sponsored walk Do you like exploring new canal routes? And do you also like walking? Well, the Wey & Arun Canal Trust can offer you a day discovering little known traces of the former Portsmouth & Arundel Canal. This annual walk for charity is being held on Sunday 3rd June and starts from Walberton Village Hall. The 12 mile route takes in Binsted, the banks of the River Arun, Ford and Yapton before returning to Walberton to collect cars. A fascinating glimpse of canal structures can be seen along the way, including the entrance to the Portsmouth & Arundel Canal at Ford, and the enchanting Norman church of Ford. The walk even takes you under a buried canal bridge hidden in a new housing estate, and another one in Yapton that you come upon quite by chance. One of the refreshment stops is right by the site of the Hollingworth swing bridge. The PORTSMOUTH & ARUNDEL CANAL which opened in 1823 and was abandoned in 1855 never having been a financial success. The canal was part of a larger scheme for the construction of a secure inland canal route from London (R.Thames) to Portsmouth, which would allow craft to move between the two without having to venture into the English Channel and possibly encounter enemy ships or natural disaster. It formed the southernmost half of the waterway link of which the Wey & Arun Canal formed the northern route from the Arun at Pallingham, north of Pulborough, to Shalford, the River Wey and hence London. The P&A was 28 miles long and passed through 6 locks, 2 of which were at Ford to take the waterway from the Arun on to its inland route. So what are you waiting for? All you need to do is download a sponsor form (lunch and refreshments are included) and ask a few friends to sponsor you for the day. There is also the possibility to participate in only the morning or afternoon. Please request details from poddle@weyandarun.co.uk Registration starts at Walberton Village Hall (The Street, Walberton, Arundel BN18 0PJ) between 9-11am to check in and get the walking guide. See https://weyarun.org.uk/poddle for further details, or email poddle@weyandarun.co.uk If you don’t walk to walk, but would like to support this local charity, personal donations can be made via our website www.weyandarun.co.uk or email poddle@weyandarun.co.uk to sponsor the last walker.
