Pastoral Letter “They will beat their swords into ploughshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation will not take up sword against nation, nor will they train for war anymore.” Isaiah 2:4b This amazing vision by Isaiah the prophet, writing in the eighth century BC, of a day when wars shall cease is yet to become a reality. Remembrance Sunday is a recognition that when humanity is captivated by the power of sin and greed, there is no limit to the evil that can be perpetrated. Next year, 2018, will mark a hundred years since the end of the Great War 1914-1918, when many men left this village to serve God, King and country. Sadly, we know that not all returned and many who did had both visible and invisible wounds. Yet, a generation later, history repeated itself, this time on a larger scale with World War Two which cost the lives of over 60 million people (some estimates put the figure nearer 80 million). Here at St Peter’s we have three graves of those who died from their wounds during that conflict. Our village, like many others, has a war memorial to those who never returned, which incorporates the names of those killed or missing in action from both World Wars. In St Peter’s there is a moving tribute to the two sons of the Rev’d William Mainprice who were both serving in the Royal Navy when they paid the ultimate sacrifice in 1914 and 1916 respectively. We also have a memorial window in the south aisle dedicated to the memory of Robert and Guy Helme, who were serving 5 in the army and they too perished in World War One. Some communities across the land are looking ahead to 2018 to recognise not just the end of the First World War, but to ensure that the memory of these events and conflicts since, are not forgotten by the generations yet to come. Isaiah’s vision, recorded in the Bible, are words that are etched into a sundial outside the UN Headquarters in New York, to remind all nations of the importance of striving for peace in a war-torn world that tends to forget the lessons of history.

Prayer Chain of Prayer Worried about a loved one, a friend or yourself and would like prayers to be said by a chain of people? Contact Wendy 700295 or Gillian 700157 and they will start the chain by contacting the person next to them on the list and so it goes all the way round. A copy of the chain is on the notice board at the back of church. Prayer is a powerful and important part of life and one should never under estimate its effect. You don't need to give any details of the problem just ask for prayers to be said and it will happen. Please note that it will be treated with total confidentiality.

Prayers are offered for parishioners who are in special need, especially the sick and frail. Please advise either of the churchwardens of any persons or situations you would like remembered in this way. All those living in particular roads are prayed for regularly, the whole parish being covered over a 12-week cycle: Week beginning:

From the Editor A warm welcome to the November 2017 edition of Ad Vincula. Apologies if your copy is a little late this month but I had a little accident while on holiday in France which delayed our return home so I couldn’t complete the magazine in the usual timeframe. This month’s cover picture and the report on p30 highlight a seemingly baffling situation of West Sussex Highways and WSCC wanting to demolish the ancient Boxal Bridge and replace it with a wider structure against the wishes of both WG and Kirdford Parish Councils and nearly 3,500 citizens who signed a petition in 2015. We can only guess at their ulterior motives. I’m pleased to say that we have received a few more pictures of Ad Vincula in different places and a selection of recent entries to our little competition can be found on p15. In addition to the usual articles, this month I would just highlight a few items:  Church Building Works finally get under way (p27),  Some good news on the Crouchland Biogas fiasco (p33)  WSCC guidance on clearing leaves from drains (p51) I hope you will find something of interest and do please keep all your articles, comments and photos coming to me at editor@stpeterswg.org.uk. Wisborough Green Primary School News The first half of the term has been full of fun and excitement. We welcomed a visitor from the 'Stone Age', who took the children on a journey back to the time of hunters and survivors. The children loved performing dramas to reflect their understanding of what life was like many years ago. Transporting themselves into space, zooming amongst the planets, everyone loved the visiting planetarium. This is a topic that has most definitely inspired the children to reach for the stars and follow their dreams. We look forward to welcoming Sir Teachalot, a real life Saxon, later this term. The experience is going to be full of drama and demolition! On the topic of destruction, the building work is well underway now. We are looking forward to having a full sized classroom for our oldest students and some additional facilities for both staff 11 and children. Our 'Secret Garden' is being developed by some students from Chichester University. This will be a special place for everyone to learn more about the great outdoors. Our fantastic PTA has contributed a large proportion of the funds to help us improve our beautiful grounds. The children benefit from having opportunities to solve problems outside, work collaboratively and discover the wonders of the world. If you can spare any time to help develop this area of the school, then the students would welcome your support. They will be in school every Wednesday next term. Please email the school office if you would like to be part of this exciting project. It was good to meet with some of the members of the Parish Council to discuss the traffic situation around the school. Everyone is working hard to make improvements to the traffic congestion at both ends of the school day. If you would like to be part of our 'Travel Committee', then please contact the school office to find out the date of our next meeting. Together, we really can make a difference to the safety of the children in our care. Plans are underway for Christmas, which is only a few weeks away now! We are looking forward to the Nativity, Christmas lunch, Santa's visit and of course the Wisborough Green Pantomime. Oh no we're not! Oh yes we are! It really is the best time of year in a school. For all our latest news, take a look at our website: http://www.wisboroughgreenschool.org.uk or follow us on Twitter - @WGPS864

Nature Notes The weekend of 13 to 15 October was a real wildlife treat. First we had an excellent Friday evening talk about small mammals, focusing on dormice, and next morning we made an early trip to Northup Copse to check for signs of them in special traps. I had no idea they led such arboreal lives. I’d pictured them scampering about in the undergrowth, but no, they live up in the tree canopy, only settling lower down for hibernation. They come down to feed on some spring plants, and then feast on hazelnuts in the autumn. And as they don’t store nuts like other small mammals, they need to fill right up before sleep! We didn’t get to see a dormouse, but in the traps, and released, were three lively wood mice and a calmer bank vole. A good time was had by all, children included, and we learned a lot. Dormice have been seen, are being monitored, and are definitely snoozing in the Copse!

Then on Sunday we walked in the Mens with SWT. The afternoon sun filtered through the huge beech and oak trees and the ground beneath was host to a fungi spectacular! Some were enormous, 13

spreading across tree trunks like a wave, others so tiny only our experts spotted them! Fungi are a precious part of the ecosystem and can provide vital underground networks of support for many good-sized trees. Fascinating things! And later we passed a clump of butcher’s broom. It looks like its namesake from a distance, but approach with care! Butchers used to clean their blocks with it, we’re told. Very sharp ‘leaves’ are actually stems with flowers on. The Mens is full of surprises, and very beautiful on a fine autumn day. Later I heard a R4 programme about overwintering butterflies, Red Admirals and Peacocks. Some Red Admirals can travel 20 odd miles during a day - and even emigrate across the channel! And the caterpillars may Photos clockwise from Top Left: Wood Mouse, Bank Vole, examining the traps, Butcher’s Broom, Fungi

move about between nettle patches before they pupate. Peacocks are more sedentary, but they both tuck themselves away to hibernate, occasionally emerging in warmer spells. This is where my friend Ivy comes in. Ivy provides wonderful late sustenance for butterflies, bees and many other insects. So please leave it where/when you can. It doesn’t harm mature trees and some actually benefit from an ivy cloak to warm them! Talking of leaving things, I’m sad that the council sent round that huge machine to decimate so many of our verges! Why? So late in the year?? I’ll be reseeding ours and will carry on doing so - So there!! Much better news is that a new barn owl has been seen locally and we’re hearing others quite often. We’ll keep watch and wait for next year. Good numbers of ducklings on the pond too, though I’ve not seen Rev Duck recently. She’s much missed, but most ducks only live 3 or 4 years, so she did well, didn’t she! And lastly - Early Yuletide Greetings to you all – and see you next year! Sue J 14

THE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION POPPY APPEAL 2017 Remembrance Day this year falls on Sunday 12th November and the Appeal campaign will officially start on the 28th October. Each year the village supports this charity magnificently and thanks the hard working volunteers for their time and effort. This year Stan Warren died after giving many years of service to the Legion. He is already greatly missed by the Branch as we realise how much time and effort he put in. Remember that we have a military presence in many places around the World and the calls for help increase amongst those retired, but who cannot escape from their memories. Please give generously. They did. John Ansley, 01403 700302

JUST A THOUGHT A small village ‘up north', just like ours, has introduced ‘knock and check’. It involves local folks taking responsibility for the street/road where they live, and once maybe twice a week just knocking on your neighbour’s door/s to ask if they are alright. I do not think it is too onerous a task. I have passed this thought to several of my friends in the village and they have said they would be prepared to take part in the scheme. If you would like to get involved, no commitment. Please drop me an email and we can try and put something together. Brian Smith

Village Hall News Existing

Proposed

First of all a very big thank you to Reg Hickman and his hard-working team of helpers for organising and running the Table Top sale on 7 th October. I am delighted to say that the event raised over £680 to go towards our modernisation project. Thank you everyone. The Hall Committee was saddened to learn of the death of Brian Devenney who had been a member of the Committee for the last 3 years. Brian was always a willing and helpful member of the committee and cared deeply about the hall as an important community resource. He will be sadly missed. At the time of writing, I have no news from Chichester DC regarding our planning application but hopefully we shall receive a positive decision shortly. The project team is now in the process of planning how best to target applications for grants based on the various types of improvement that are included in our plans. Nothing else to report at present on the project.

Please note that the Annual General Meeting of the Hall will be held on Monday 27th November 2017 at 8.00 pm in the main hall. All welcome to attend. Please come along to enjoy a glass of wine and hear the latest news about the Hall. Keith Carter, Chairman, Village Hall Management Committee

TABLE TOP SALE IN AID OF THE REFURBISHMENT OF THE VILLAGE HALL, SATURDAY 7TH OCTOBER 2017 A Big THANK YOU!! Barbara & Reg would like to say a big THANK YOU to all the helpers who gave their time, Ann Wood for the wonderful cakes, the Short Mat Bowling Club for the scrumptious hamper, local trades people for their donations, and Keith & Fred for setting up the tables. The bottle tombola, raffle, lucky dip and grand hamper draw proved to be very popular with people walking round with big smiles carrying their winnings, and everyone rewarded themselves with a cuppa & some wonderful homemade cakes. The grand total made was a whopping £681.50 which was presented to the Committee Chairman, Keith Carter, to go towards the modernization of the interior of the Village Hall. Reg Hickman

WISBOROUGH GREEN SCHOOL PLANNING A BONFIRE BONANZA! There really is nothing like the smell of Autumn – it’s the perfect antidote to a disappointingly damp summer, and gets us very much in the mood for planning our exciting Bonfire Night celebrations! It’s a long held tradition in Wisborough Green, and we are very proud to be a part of it. This year will see the usual fun of the event, including our build a guy competition, the chance to win the honour of starting the fireworks by ‘pushing the plunger’, a fantastic prize draw, plus top quality BBQ food courtesy of Coughtrey’s in Pulborough. We are busy gathering pallets and fuel for our pyre as we speak and are very grateful to the many local businesses who support us especially the Davies who provide their Field and the Lees who assist us with the build. HARVEST AUCTION On Sunday evening 17th September, the annual auction of produce was held in The Cricketers by kind permission of Craig, the landlord. A good evening was started by Helen Vause, standing in for the Vicar, who was on his sabbatical, pulling the first pint and followed by the singing of ‘We plough the fields and Scatter’ to the accompaniment of a violin. Some fierce bidding took place for the produce, which had been provided from donations made at the Harvest Festival Service held earlier in the day in the church and by those attending the auction. The auction produced over £400 for the Elliott Fund, a village charity. Jamie Daniell

BUILDING WORKS IN THE CHURCH It was with much relief and joy that the building project in the church finally got under way on 2nd October after delays caused by technical issues. The organ had already been removed from the church for a major overhaul by Bishop and Sons of Ipswich. The floor for the organ loft has now been raised to allow for extra headroom beneath and in readiness for the return of the organ once the works have been completed. Work is now well under way to provide 2 WCs and much needed storage space in the ground floor area beneath the organ. Other aspects of the project, which will include two new vestries, a servery and improvements to both porches, will follow. The work is being undertaken by Valley Builders Limited of East Grinstead and their team John Beasley (contract manager), Mark (foreman) and Alex being in attendance daily. The church is being kept open as much as possible during the project both for services and for visitors. It is expected that work will continue through Christmas and into the Spring before all aspects of the project are completed. Jamie Daniell

Update Ridiculously Bonkers Over 3,000 voices shouldn't be ignored We are all amazed that part of the charm of Wisborough Green and Kirdford is being threatened and wildlife under attack. The beautiful stone arch Boxal Bridge is being scheduled for demolition. The decision is being taken by just one man, Bob Lanzer, the cabinet member for highways and infrastructure. WSCC Highways plans to demolish this bridge completely unnecessary. KKWG are rallying the Councillors and need to get the corroboration from six of them. The Bridge is currently capable of supporting 40T HGV's and wheel loads of 11 tons that fully covers the Highways directive for Highways bridges. It is our understanding there is no requirement for rural unclassified roads to carry abnormal loads which is why we are perplexed and feel that the assessments carried out by WSCC are for 30 loads exceeding this. Parish Councils have asked for the vegetation to be cut back on the inside bend of the Boxal Brook and signs to be put up to reduce speeds over the bridge. All, it would appear, to no avail. It simply doesn't make sense . Let's put to one side the cost of the proposed replacement for the time being as this money could be spent on improving the road surfaces and signage. Here are some positive facts: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

6.

The Bridge is structurally sound - "if it ain't broke why try to fix it". The area is a natural habitat for wildlife. It's one of 4 bridges linking two rural villages, two of which are listed. Independent Highways engineers agree that the bridge will need some attention but NOT A REPLACEMENT. WSCC believe that savings can be made by replacing the bridge, but this isn't necessarily the case. A new structure will have higher maintenance costs, lower strength and in this case we feel there is no justification that indicates any increased traffic. On 16 October 2015 WSCC adopted a resolution "that WSCC Highways work closely with the Kirdford and Wisborough Green Parish Councils to explore the safest and most acceptable project for the future of the bridge, taking into account the rural environment as well as architectural and historical merit." (Continued on page 31)

(Continued from page 30)

 Such close working has not happened.  Both Parishes OBJECT as they have done since 2013 Therefore we ask one simple question WHY? Like children growing up we will continue to ask that same question until we get satisfactory answers. Jill Sutcliffe, Chair KKWG, 01403 700395 or jillsutcliffe1@gmail.com

Enthusiasts’ donation boosts canal restoration With the new Compasses Bridge at Alfold finished, a donation from waterway enthusiasts has boosted the Wey & Arun Canal Trust’s other initiatives in the area. The trust’s focus is now on restoring more of the canal’s Summit Level to navigation. The £1,000 given by North and East London branch of the Inland Waterways Association (IWA) will go towards other projects being planned for this Surrey section of the Wey & Arun. A cheque for the donation was presented to trust chairman Sally Schupke by the IWA branch chairman, Tim Lewis. Tim was with other volunteers from the London Waterway Recovery Group who spent a weekend working on final landscaping tasks at Compasses Bridge, which is at the Alfold entrance to the Dunsfold Park aerodrome and business complex. “My IWA branch was looking to make a donation to a worthy cause and contributing to the progress of the Wey & Arun is certainly worthwhile,” he said. “We are delighted at the progress being made in Surrey. Sally commented: “We are really grateful to North and East London IWA for their donation, and for the efforts of their members on Waterway Recovery Group working parties. They make a huge contribution to the project.”

Crouchland Biogas Update - October 2017 It has been a busy period!  Crouchland Biogas went into administration, August 7th 2017  The land at Crouchland Farm (circa 450 acres) went into receivership, August 9 th 2017.  Biomethane (Castle Eaton) Ltd went into administration, August 15th 2017 (Leon Mekitarian, MD at Crouchland Biogas is one of the 2 directors)  Farm Fuels Ltd (90% owned by CBG) went into administration, August 30 th 2017. The best news however was saved until 10th October when Katie Peerless, the Planning Inspector dismissed all 3 of the Crouchland planning appeals and ordered the commercial activity at Crouchland Biogas to stop by 10 th November and all unlawful infrastructure to be dismantled/demolished and removed from site within 18 months. This is the result which we had battled for over the past four years; the common sense result. There has been a committed team fighting this company’s expansion and on behalf of all the community we thank the Parish Councils, PORE, the Plaistow Village Trust and other individuals for their diligent work. There are now however, some critical questions regarding the financial goings-on at Crouchland Biogas – which must be pursued; 1. 2. 3.

4.

How did Privilege Finance continue to lend £37 million to a failing company without planning consent? How did Southern Gas Networks partner for 20 years and invest £4.5 million with a site/company without planning consent? Looking at the Administrators report, the deficit is inexplicably huge. Certainly the most obvious question is “How was this allowed to happen?” by this insolvent company for so long? £37 million total loss and an apparent £11 million loss on a £2.6 million turnover in the last 11 months! How did the various regulatory authorities fail to exercise an appropriate level of control over this company and instead allowed the situation to escalate unchecked?

We will continue to delve into thes e questions and expose any irregularities. Thank you for your continued support – it really is much appreciated.

Recipe of the Month SPICED PECAN, APPLE & CRANBERRY CAKE This moist, lightly spiced cake seems perfect at this time of year, using seasonal fruit. With the chilly mornings and darkening afternoons, what could be better with a cup of tea?!

Ingredients         

34

175g unsalted butter, softened, plus extra to grease 150g caster sugar 3 medium eggs 1 tsp vanilla extract 150g plain flour 1 tsp baking powder 2 tbsp milk ½ tsp ground cinnamon 3 (Braeburn) apples, peeled, cored and cut into small cubes  50g fresh cranberries (defrosted if frozen)

Method 1. Preheat oven to 180 degrees C (160 C fan), mark 4. Grease and line a 20.5cm (8”) springform cake tin with baking parchment. 2. Using a free-standing mixer or electric hand whisk, beat 150g of the butter with the sugar, eggs, vanilla, flour, baking powder and milk until pale and fluffy, about 5 minutes. Spoon into prepared tin and level the surface. Bake for 10 minutes. 3. Meanwhile, heat the remaining butter in a large frying pan until foam. Stir in the cinnamon and apples and cook for 3 minutes until almost tender. Take off the heat and stir in the cranberries and pecans. 4. Carefully take the part-baked cake out of the oven and sprinkle over the apple mixture. Return to the oven and bake for a further 40-50 minutes or until a skewer inserted into the centre of the cake comes out clean. 5. Leave cake to cool in tin for 5 minutes, then remove from the tin and peel off paper. Transfer to a serving plate. Gently warm the apricot jam in a small pan to loosen, then brush over the top of the cake. Serve cake warm or at room temperature. ENJOY!! (Recipe courtesy of Good Housekeeping magazine!) .

The Gardener’s Calendar

by Ian Clemens

 There's still time to plant daffodil bulbs and

other spring flowering bulbs.

 Plant out spring bedding displays of pansies, violas

and primulas.

 Start to plant bare-root roses - they can be

planted any time between now and March.

 Continue to lift dahlia tubers, begonias and gladiolus corms to store

dry over the winter months. Remove the dead foliage before storing.

 Cut back the yellowing foliage of herbaceous perennials, and lift and

divide overcrowded clumps to maintain their vigour.

 Lift parsnips after the first frosts when their flavour will have

sweetened.

 Divide mature clumps of rhubarb once they are dormant.  If you have access to fresh manure, now is the time to spread it

across the surface of your vegetable beds to rot down over winter.

 Build a raised bed to take the bending out of vegetable growing.  Stake top-heavy brassicas and draw up some soil around the base of

the stem to prevent wind rocking the plant and causing damage to the roots.

 Now is the ideal time to plant currant bushes whilst they are

dormant.

 Plant raspberry canes now for a delicious home grown crop.  Check fruits in storage and promptly remove any showing signs of

disease or rotting.

 Tidy up your strawberry plants - cut off any dead leaves and remove

runners.

 Prune pear and apple trees anytime between now and February. But

don't be tempted to prune your plum trees now as they will be susceptible to the silver leaf fungus - wait until midsummer.

 Apply glue bands or grease bands to the trunks of fruit trees to

prevent wingless female winter moths climbing the trunks and laying their eggs in the branches.

Wisborough Green History - JAMES Last month I described how Jack Graveley sold the filling station business to Vernon Wilde upon his brother's death in 1956 but retained the Butts Works business for the time being. In that same year, James Pearce, who was later to acquire Butts Works, began renovating old Bentleys . . . James Pearce's company had its beginnings in 1956 in south London when George, a neighbour and friend of James Pearce (known as Jim) bought a 3 litre Bentley. It was a vintage landaulet (a saloon where the rear passenger part had a retractable fabric roof) that was in a very poor condition and needed a complete overhaul. Jim was invited to assist in its overhaul particularly as he had a technical background gained whilst he was a flight mechanic in the RAF in the Second World War working on Spitfires and Lancasters. Jim was also an engraver for architectural works in the London area. In this work he developed a skill in design and style that was to prove very useful when combined with his engineering abilities. While George was busy stripping the mechanical parts of the car, Jim worked on the bodywork. From this beginning, he learnt how a Bentley was built. He also helped George in the mechanical side and the two of them brought the car up to a very high standard. When the car was completed, it was taken to the Kensington Gardens rally around 1959/60 and won top awards. 36

In 1956, not long after he married Chris, Jim decided that he must have a Bentley. George found, in Jim's words, "quite a nice one", but it needed a complete overhaul. Gradually, they realised that they weren't happy with the design of the body and decided to m ak e som e changes and immediately set about doing their own coach building. Again, the car was completely overhauled and with a new body, too. Jim always seemed to have a Bentley to drive, either his own or one provided by his good friend, George, and he and his wife enjoyed their life visiting Bentley club meetings all around the country. See attached photo of Jim meeting the famous W O Bentley (the company founder (left)) at Silverstone in 1962. One day he received a phone call from Tony Robinson of North Stables Coachbuilding saying that he needed a new body and had thought about designing and making one

S E PEARCE (SUSSEX) LTD (Cont) 4 based on the Vanden Plas design; Jim encouraged him and while Tony measured up an original 4½ litre and cut out all of the sections of timber then assembled them resulting in a very fine body for his car. Jim was asked if he could supply all of the additional body parts such as the windscreen, brackets, locks, hinges and everything else including a hood frame to which he agreed. This extended into supplying similar parts for Tony's own clients and it became a lot of work. This developed into Jim and Tony working together. Tony built complete cars for clients up to the stage of them having a chassis, engine and body that required finishing. Clients then handed the cars over to Jim to finish according to the clients' own specific requirements such as trimming. The work involved varied a lot; sometimes Jim had to make and fit the trim, sometimes whole body parts such as wings had to be made. The trimming side of his work was quite different. This was mainly the addition of interior details but particularly upholstery. He took the trim apart from some old cars to learn how it was done and how he could make it. This necessitated buying a heavy duty sewing machine and other equipment needed to manufacture trim and seats. He made contact with a trimmer who started him trimming interiors which led onto seating arrangements and hoods. In the end Jim was pleased that he could turn out a car finished and complete. He had a lot of help from his wife, Chris, who often accompanied him to his garage and expertly sewed body fabrics to the standard that she knew was expected. During these years of 37 increasing his skills and rebuilding many cars, he built up a clientele of appreciative people within the Bentley club and beyond. His work encompassed every aspect of coachwork, but also electrical work and some mechanical engineering, though this didn't usually involve the actual engines except when overhauling his own cars. Attached is a photo of Jim Pearce taken recently with an original supercharged 4½ litre Bentley that raced at Le Mans in 1930. (To be continued next issue) Richard B

Neighbourhood Watch - Crime News & Advice Modelling Jobs Advanced Fee Fraud Alert The National Fraud Intelligence Bureau (NFIB) and Action Fraud have recently noticed that Fraudsters have been setting up fake adverts on social media (including Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp) and job browsing websites to dupe people into believing they are recruiting for prospective models. Once victims show interest in the job, the fraudsters contact potential victims on the false promise of a modelling career and subsequently advise the victims to come in for a test shoot. The fraud can then potentially be carried out in two ways; Firstly, the fraudsters can pressurise the victims in sending an upfront fee to book a slot for the test shoot. Once they have received the upfront fee, the victim will never hear from the fraudsters again. The second possible method is that the fraudsters will take the advance fee that the victim sends for a photo shoot and arrange a photo shoot with the victim. After the photo shoot, the fraudsters will contact the victim after a few days and convince them that their shoot was successful and offer them a job as a model. The victim will then be asked to sign a contract and pay another upfront fee, usually to secure the modelling contract. Fraudsters are also creating fake adverts for supposed modelling opportunities for children which do not exist. Fraudsters will inform parents or guardians that a potential career in modelling awaits their child. This tactic convinces the parent or guardian to 41 sign up their child and send an advance fee. The suspects will also convince the victim that in order to become a model, they will need to have a portfolio. The fraudsters will recommend a number of packages and stress that if a package is not paid for in advance, the process of becoming a model cannot continue. Over a two year period (September 2015 – August 2017), an average of 28 reports of advance fee modelling frauds have been received per month by the NFIB. In August 2017, 49 Action Fraud reports of this fraud type were received and may continue to rise. The total loss in August 2017 alone was over £71,000. Tips for staying safe:  Carry out your own research prior to paying any type of advance or upfront fee.  Be wary if you are asked to pay for a portfolio, as many legitimate agencies will cover that cost.  Don't give your bank account details or sensitive information to anyone without carrying out your own research on the relevant agency.  If you have been affected by this, or any other type of fraud, report it to Action Fraud by visiting www.actionfraud.police.uk or by calling 0300 123 2040 If you have information about any crime call 101, email: 101@sussex.pnn.police.uk or call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. If you see a crime taking place call 999. Regards, Priscilla Pinkham

Many thanks to those of you who "bought and brought" at the plant sale - £143.50 towards funds - also an opportunity for topical gardening chat! As ever many thanks to Sally Hicks for providing the venue. We were given lots of pots of old Cymbidium Orchids and having divided and repotted them, managed to sell most of them. We will bring the remaining ones to the next talk. Good to start the winter talks last month and especially good to see so many entries for the Five Stems please keep it up! We were asked by a member could we consider having coffee before the talks and after a show of hands it was decided WE WILL. So, from now on please try and come that little bit earlier? The next talk is entitled "Candlelit Christmas" by Sue Flight on Monday 6th November. Finally, apologies to those of you who have yet to receive their cups from the August Show - we are having a few of them re-plated (not before time I hear you say!). WGHS

He says, ‘I love good chocolate and enjoy it every day, however, 25 years ago when I first came to the UK, it was impossible to find. Luckily, the scene has changed, and nowadays you can buy decent bars of good chocolate. The big supermarkets 47 have even introduced their own brands of good quality chocolate bars. Unfortunately, you can’t say the same about the market for truffles and other filled chocolates. Here it seems that many corners are still being cut and the end result is most often very disappointing. With PURE Chocolate Truffles I want not only to introduce you to good delicious chocolate truffles, but also to show that such good chocolate truffles can be made without any colourings, additives or preservatives’. WI Report The hall was full of members on the 5th October as word had got around that we were going to have a food tasting, always a sure way to guarantee W.I. members attendance! Nicci Anderson and her sous chef, Donna, from Wiltshire Farm Foods came and gave us the history of the company and provided some delicious samples of their products. They produce meals of differing sizes, textures, prices and all pre-frozen ready to go into the microwave or oven, all delivered for free. If you don’t feel like cooking or are a student who is unable/unwilling to cook they are super. Our next meeting on the 2nd November is our Annual Meeting. It is so important to come to this meeting as it shows that there is commitment to the W.I. and also it gives everyone a chance to have a say in how our particular group is managed and what you would like the programme to include, plus there is wine & nibbles!! See you there. Sue Nicholls 700827 Mary Benson (President) 01403 700284

Weather Watch September was an unsettled month (again) with a succession of low pressure areas crossing the country. 49

Wisborough Green Rainfall for the month was 120mm – last year 36mm and my 9 yr average 53mm. Not a nice September and certainly no Indian Summer! Highest temperature in September was 24.0°C at Hawarden (Flintshire) and the coldest temp was recorded at Altnaharra (Sutherland) minus 1.2°C. At least no frost for us yet but Autumn is under way. Unsurprisingly, sunshine levels were way down – 77% of average for September. Weathervane

Village Hall 50 Club Draw The winner of the October draw is Geoffrey Preston-Jones who wins £50. The winner of the second prize of £20 is Sue Nicholls The November draw will be at The Three Crowns at 6.30 pm on Wednesday 8 November and if any member or prospective member would like to attend they will be very welcome. Leaf litter and drainage don’t mix West Sussex County Council is calling on residents who are able to help rake leaves away from drains to stop them blocking up. Every autumn, highway drains quickly become covered with falling leaves and sometimes blocked – increasing the likelihood of flooding. Five minutes spent raking them out of the way is all it takes to prevent this from happening.

Five top tips:  Where possible do it in daylight (outside peak hours) when visibility is good, on roads of less than 40mph.  Stand on the verge or pavement and rake leaves downhill towards you until they are well out of the way.  If you live on a busy street, park your car in front of the drain to create a safety barrier for you.  Wear something bright so you are clearly visible and other road users know you’re there.  Avoid raking leaves uphill, or into the road, as they will only be blown or washed back into the drain. If flooding problems persist after a drain has been cleared of leaves, you can report them by visiting love.westsussex.gov.uk or report any defect using our Love West Sussex phone app, downloaded free for iPhone, Android, Windows Phone and Blackberry. For more information watch a short video https://youtu.be/cmzairxU5dQ

Clearing ditches before winter arrives! If you are a riparian ditch owner, now is the time to clear summer vegetation growth before winter arrives. The County Council is keen for riparian owners, who are responsible for the upkeep of their ditches, to make the most of the warmer weather while it lasts and clear them out. Ditches are watercourses designed to drain the surrounding area or hold water. Removing vegetation, grass weeds, shrubs or any other debris helps water run freely and prevents flooding. It is easier to stand inside a ditch to cut it back while the weather is hopefully drier. If ditches need heavier clearance work, Operation Watershed fund can offer help. More information can be found on www.westsussex.gov.uk/watershed or email operation.watershed@westsussex.gov.uk
