Pastoral Letter 2 Timothy 3, 16 and 17 - All scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that you, a man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. Sunday 25th October is Bible Sunday, when we reflect on the importance of Holy Scripture in our lives as Christian disciples. Although it is impossible to obtain exact figures, the Guinness World Records estimate that over 6 billion plus copies of the Bible have been sold since records were kept. Today folk around the world are translating the Bible into new languages, currently around 1,300, there are still amazingly 4,415 to go! With the freedom we enjoy in this country it is difficult to imagine that in some countries around the world it is almost impossible to obtain a Bible or even own one. The governments in these countries take active steps to prevent them being imported or purchased, or block the transmission of radio, TV and internet communications that include Bible references or comments about Jesus Christ or His Church. Some Christians still meet secretly to read the Bible and worship the Living Word, Jesus, yet do this with the knowledge that they may be arrested, tortured or imprisoned and even in some cases face death. However for many Christians in this country our knowledge and use of the Bible can be limited to what we hear or read on Sundays in Church. On Bible Sunday we will be having a display of Bible Reading Notes, Websites and Apps to help us dig deeper into God’s Word for living today in God’s world. The 19th Century Baptist preacher and Bible teacher, Charles H Spurgeon is quoted as saying in regard to a student’s Bible, “A Bible that’s falling apart, usually belongs to someone who isn’t.” That seems to be as true today as it was then. Come along and enjoy our Family Communion and Bible Sunday Service! Clive and Marion

The Festival will run from Saturday 5th December until Sunday 13th December and if any business or family is interested in sponsoring a tree please contact Graham Parr on 01403 700793. A copy of the chain is on the notice board at the back of church. Prayer is a powerful and important part of life and one should never under estimate its effect. You don't need to give any details of the problem just ask for prayers to be said and it will happen. Please note that it will be treated with total confidentiality.
Prayers are offered for parishioners who are in special need, especially the sick and frail. From the Editor Welcome to the October edition of Ad Vincula and a warm welcome to the new Head of Wisborough Green School, Amanda Harrison, who provides her debut report on p17. To make best use of space, I have had to move the Village Market report also to p17. In addition to the usual articles, this month we have advance notice of the Christmas Tree Festival 2015 (p5), an appeal for items for a school in Uganda (p11), a plea for more church choir members to safeguard its future (p12), advance notice of a concert in memory of Roger Moorey (p12) and the annual shoebox appeal (p15). We have reports on the fete that “wasn’t quite” (p15), KKWG update on Boxal Bridge (p21) and a report with pictures of the Charity Hot Air Balloon Festival (p22-23). I would love to hear from you with any comments, suggestions, etc. Best wishes, Roland Zilz This magazine can also be viewed on line at: http://www.wisboroughgreenparishchurch.org.uk/index.php/parish-magazine
The Gardener’s Calendar
by Ian Clemens
As colder weather is approaching, protect half-hardy plants with fleece or bring into a frost-free greenhouse or conservatory.
Once the first frosts have blackened Dahlia foliage, lift tubers and store in a dry frost free environment over the winter months.
Lift Begonia tubers and Gladioli corms and remove the dead foliage before storing them.
Plant daffodil, tulip and Allium bulbs for a glorious spring display. Time to plant spring bedding such as wallflowers, Bellis, Primulas and winter pansies . Harvest squashes and pumpkins before the first frosts. Finish harvesting beans and peas. When beans and peas finish cropping simply cut the plant away at ground level, leaving the roots in the soil. These crops fix nitrogen which is slowly released into the soil as the roots break down
Continue planting autumn garlic and onions for a bumper earlier crop next summer. Any plants with green tomatoes or peppers remaining can be hung upside down indoors to ripen.
Clear the straw from around the base of strawberry plants to increase ventilation. Shear back old foliage to encourage fresh new growth.
Divide congested clumps of rhubarb by digging up and splitting into several pieces with a spade. Re-plant the healthiest looking pieces.
Remove the netting from fruit cages to allow birds to catch and eat any pests that are lurking there.

Appeal for Items for School in Uganda I live in Wisborough Green and work for a Sussex based charity called Fonthill Foundation. We redistribute unwanted or surplus education and school / office resources from the UK to schools in East Africa where they are desperately needed. We are currently collecting items for St John Leonard School in Mpigi, Uganda. This small school provides an essential education for 230 boys and girls aged between 3 and 12 years old in rural Uganda. Meet some of the pupils. Many of these children live in extreme poverty, some are orphaned; but by going to school they have the chance to fulfil their hopes and dreams. The children are eager to learn but classrooms are basic and learning resources expensive. This is why we are working to provide these children with a shipping container bursting with essential donated equipment and resources to help them flourish in school. They need pens, pencils, stationary, exercise books, paper, rubbers, rulers, maths equipment, educational children’s toys and sports equipment. As well as children’s shoes and trainers and child size school bags. The school also has a small dormitory that requires single bed sheets and bedding, along with carpets and rugs for the bare earth floors. The school would also benefit from having a range of gardening tools so they can grow fresh vegetables, along with large cooking pots, basic cooking utensils, plastic plates, mugs and bowls so they can feed the children one nutritional meal a day. If you are able to donate any of these items, however large or small, please do contact me and I can arrange to pop round and collect them. ONWARDS AND UPWARDS SAFE GUARDING THE FUTURE OF THE CHURCH CHOIR Many churches, especially in villages, do not have a choir.
small
We are lucky at St Peter’s in that we have a very able group of dedicated singers who practice on a regular basis and lead worship in the sung Eucharist and other services. BUT, like everything else, new blood is required in order to safe guard our choir for the future. I shall not be creaking up the stairs to the organ loft for ever, but when I do retire I want to leave behind a choir that the church can be proud of: this can only be done if NEW PEOPLE VOLUNTEER THEIR SERVICES TO JOIN THE CHOIR and support it on a regular basis. At present we have 5 sopranos, 2 altos, 3 tenors and 4 basses. Where is help needed? At least 2/3 sopranos, 2/3 altos, 2 tenors, 1 bass. SO! Can you help or can you suggest people who might be willing to use their talents in this way? If so, email me at malcolm_brinson@hotmail.com (there is an underscore between the first two words) or talk to me when I am in church. ONWARDS and UPWARDS. Malcolm Brinson, Director of Music, St Peter ad Vincula
ROGER MOOREY MEMORIAL CONCERT 2015 Some of you will remember the concert held last November in memory of Roger. He was a joyous musician who played his clarinet and sax in St Peter's, rock groups, the Slinfold Concert Band and later the Riverboat Shuffle jazz band. It is wonderful to say that the Glee Singers and Riverboat Shuffle have agreed to another concert on Saturday November 21st at 7pm in church, in aid of St Peter's and Family Support Work. We are also hoping for musical contributions from Malcolm and the choir – and from other friends. Hopefully the Moorey ensemble will also play. We are looking forward to seeing you for this very happy evening. More details in next month’s Ad Vincula. Judy Moorey 12
Nature Notes A few days ago, as I went out of the back door I was greeted by a loud chattering. I looked up to see a crowd of swallows covering the aerials on the roof. Others were circling and swooping around it and about the top of our tall birch tree. I dashed in for my phone to take a picture, but of course they had flown! They came back several times, dipping and diving and almost posing on the wire structures, but never stayed long enough for me to catch them for these notes. My wildlife photography credentials are not great I fear! A good proportion of them were youngsters, without the forked tails, and as they finally rose in a small cloud and flew off towards the village I wished them a safe journey south. So Autumn draws in. Our migrant birds leaving always brings on a moment of melancholy, but …what’s this? All at once our many sedum plants are covered in bees, and I mean honey bees, so hooray! We’ve seen very few all summer, but now they’re joining all the bumblebees, wasps and others who come to these late flowering plants. The nectar must have something special about it, I think. So why not plant one or two and see how many bees come to visit in 2016? And something else to look forward to next year is our little wildflower meadow. Now the seeds have dropped or been collected it’s had its first proper cut. Some extra areas have been stripped of turf, and more fresh seeds strewn. The weather was kind and dropped gentle rain on them for a day or two, so hopefully enough flowers will take root to spread through some of the tough established grass around them. It’s been quite heavy work to cut the strips with a special turf cutter, and to lift and shift the sods, so that’s enough for this year! We’ll keep you posted….. The Sussex Wildlife Trust organised a day course on meadows at Wakehurst Place. They are turning over several large areas to wildflowers, and a walk around in summer is a delight. The day was extremely helpful and encouraging, and they made a point of saying that anyone can have a go almost anywhere, and you can do your own thing if you want to. But a little experienced advice does help! We’ve had great support from a local couple who now have a beautiful mature meadow after several busy and devoted years. Wakehurst Place (courtesy website) The Wildlife Trust can point you in the right direction if you fancy having a go, even just a small patch. The bees, butterflies, moths etc, will all love you for it! So go on, you know you want to.... Talking of moths, we saw many at Petworth South Pond, but my wildlife photography has not been going not going too well lately, so I will leave that until I can beg steal or borrow some pictures to show you! SHOEBOX APPEAL 2015 It's that time of year again! Hopefully you have been looking out for gifts, goodies and essentials to fill your shoebox for the underprivileged families and elderly people in Eastern Europe in time for Christmas. To find out how to fill a shoebox for less than £10, please look at the website http://linktohope.co.uk (Link to Hope Rebuilding Lives and Communities in Eastern Europe). More boxes will need to be sent to the Ukraine because of the refugee problem. Although it's only a shoebox, the items inside bring considerable joy and love to those who have lost everything. The closing date is 5th November Please pick up a leaflet from the back of the church, which explains what can and can't be included or contact me for a leaflet, and for more details on 01403 700946. With many thanks, Suzanne Mosley
The Fete that wasn’t quite! Who would have thought it…two soaking wet August Bank Holiday Mondays in a row! Sadly this year’s damp day forced us to reduce the Fete on the green to rather a ‘mini’ affair. We are sorry for the disappointment that this caused for some, but would like to thank the many who came along and offered kind words of support, as well as our grateful thanks to those who helped on the few activities that we were able to put on. We would like to reassure everyone that we fully intend to bounce back bigger and brighter next year. Wisborough Green Fete Committee 15

Wisborough Green Primary School News I am delighted to write to you as the new Headteacher of Wisborough Green Primary School. The children have returned full of energy and enthusiasm and ready to learn lots of exciting new things that the teachers have planned for them. Our new Reception children joined us for their first day at school and truly amazed me with their confidence and independence. They were supported by their Year 5 buddies who played with them, helped them at lunch time and cared for them so well. We have also welcomed six new children across the school who settled in brilliantly and looked happy in their new classes. Miss Hayhoe has also joined us in Year 1 and we know she will be very happy as a new team member at Wisborough Green. This really is a busy term for us and the first week back was no exception! Some of the Year 6 children have already started planning how we are going to achieve our ‘Eco Status’ this year and there are some great discussions about how we can develop our ecological footprint. Our Harvest Festival will be held in the Church on Wednesday 30 th September and we are welcoming parents and carers back to enjoy some homemade bread and soup afterwards. We also will be holding a meeting on Tuesday 3rd November at 9.30am for ‘New Entrants 2016’. If you have a child starting school next academic year then please come along to meet the staff and have a tour of the school. I am very excited about the future of Wisborough Green Primary School and look forward to providing great learning experiences and opportunities for the children to thrive in so they can develop the vital skills needed to be successful in their future lives. Amanda Harrison, Headteacher
Wisborough Green Farmers’ and Village Market News
Next Market - Thursday 8th October 2015 Wisborough Green Village Hall 9 am – 12.30 pm At this time of writing, the deadline (21 September) for the Sussex Farmer's Market of the Year Award has not yet passed. The result will be in local papers and the internet. We are small in comparison with Chichester, Steyning and Shoreham BUT our stallholders enjoy coming here. What qualities they have remarked on include the friendly atmosphere and a lively and interesting mix of people and time to talk with them. Visitors have said how lucky we are to have such a nice well-stocked Market. Alison and Philip are “retiring” at the December market so we are needing some volunteers to create a team to help us with signs, advertising, set-up etc. Whatever your skill and ability, the Market (and the community) would appreciate your help. Do ring Mary on 01403 700624. The Wisborough Green Farmers’ and Village Market Committee 17

KKWG Update on Boxal Bridge The issue of Boxal Bridge will be on the agenda for a full meeting of the Council on October 16th in County Hall, Chichester starting at 10.30 am. NB we do not yet know its position on the agenda. We would urge anyone who can attend the meeting to come along and demonstrate the clear local support the bridge has. The petition to save it attracted 3,376 signatures. The following is a statement from Democratic Services at W SCC confirming their position that they have yet to make a decision: "I understand the position is that no decision whether to replace the Bridge has been taken as yet. As a result of the structure approaching the end of its economic life a feasibility study was carried out to explore the options available. The County Council is minded to replace the bridge with a wider structure and has engaged consultants to produce preliminary design work for the County Council to consider. The brief given to the consultants was to come up with designs that would retain the heritage look and feel of the bridge." West Sussex County Council Highways Dept did not issue a project brief asking the company for ideas in order to make the bridge safe and to improve road safety. Rather, the brief issued by WSCC Highways Dept referred to the bridge as Stopham Bridge(!) and asked for options for “widening and strengthening the bridge. We would argue that the proposal by WSCC to demolish the existing bridge has not been justified. Independent assessments undertaken for KKWG indicate that the existing bridge could quite easily be repaired and, if necessary, strengthened. A scheme could be prepared which would allow the bridge to exist in its present form for many years to come. Just to remind you, both Parish Councils - Kirdford and Wisborough Green - oppose any prospect of demolishing the bridge. Kirdford lists it as a community asset in its Neighbourhood Plan and Chichester District Council declares it a heritage asset. WISBOROUGH GREEN CHARITY HOT AIR BAL Sunday morning 6th of September 2015 dawned bright and beautiful – much to the relief and delight of the organisers of the Balloon Festival. This year, long term organisers Brian and Cecilia Smith were assisted by members of the Airworks Worldwide team, James Palmer, Daniel Froughi and Alex Farrant. Passengers and pilots gathered on the green before sunrise. In no time at all, as the sun rose, 10 hot air balloons ascended into the air carrying passengers who had each made a £95 donation to the children’s hospice, Chestnut Tree House. The balloons drifted slowly and majestically towards the south east.
Organisers happily anticipate evening flight
On their return to the green from a memorable flight, Tim Skinner, the Landlord of The Three Crowns pub served full English breakfasts to pilots, crews and passengers in the pub garden. The day continued calm and sunny – perfect ballooning weather. People arriving early for the evening flights enjoyed The Touch Rugby Competition on the green, and a barbecue. The large crowd also had an opportunity to win a balloon flight by donating £2 for a beer mat. The mats were scattered over the cricket square with people’s names and telephone numbers when the 17 balloons ascended into the sky at 6 o’clock. Our skydiver, John Dodd, jumped from another balloon and when he touched down on the green he held up the beer mat closest to his foot. The mat belonged to the lucky winner for a balloon flight at a later date, Julie Andrews. After their flights, people went to The Cricketers Arms to celebrate the flight and for dinner. The organisers are grateful to the following sponsors for their support: Fishers Farm Park, The Three Crowns
Silvester Engineering, The Cricketer's Arms Brian would like to thank the pilots and crews for giving their time – some have been coming to the event ever since it started in 1991. This year we have raised £4,525 for Chestnut Tree House Children's Hospice. We are grateful that it was such a beautiful day – and when it works, it is MAGIC !

Wisborough Green History - B Continuing the interview by Grace Stewart, she then asked Bill how the local roads used to be constructed - perhaps they used chalk? Bill replied “No, stones that used to come from Bedham. They were put in lumps to the side of the road and the old men that couldn’t get about much, they used to sit on an old sack and sit on the lumps and break them up and haul them up the hill on that side. And Carter Brothers of Newpound had steam rollers and they used to come and roll them in.” The subject then changed to the forecourt of the Three Crowns. “And all this ground, I’ve been in there twice and told them to move their cars. They go to the pub and they go right across the path. That’s all parish council ground. Well, the car park all belongs to the parish council. Old Len Cooper that’s lives up there now, he went and parked his car there one day, there was hunting on and the landlord came out and told him to move it. He said ‘you go and shift yours, that’s parish council land’. And they will drive over onto the footpath. And you can’t get along. I’ve been in there to ask them to move the car.” Grace noted that they’ve even started parking on the new pavement alongside the green (i.e. the road on the west side of the green that was new in the 1970s RB), Laurie’s parked right up on it. Bill replied “I don’t know how they park there because that’s all private road down there. How do they get permission to park all their cars along outside Mrs Synge’s? Well if they had to pay . . . , those houses there have to pay for the upkeep of the road. That is parish council. There was a footpath right along from Mrs Synge’s right along up to the park, but it’s been taken away for roads and what not. It was all beautiful stone path but you see it was the same outside of the butcher’s (i.e. Peacock's - RB) but they made them put that back when they built the house there. And now it’s a stone path all the way down to the barn. The Elms, that’s all parish council.” Conversation turned to the church. “The church always had a clock, ever since I can remember. But my eldest brother, he’s been dead a few years now, he was 97 when he died, he said the clock was given by the village of Wisborough, that’s how it’s got Clock House". And the Glebe Barn . . . ? “Ah, the Glebe Barn. That’s what Eric Clark had. There was an awful upset in the village. Rev Penney got Eric Clark the lease of it, they didn’t think it ought to be for that kind of thing." For what did the church use it? “Well, what I remember it was for the prisoners of war, they kept their horses in there and their ploughing things, that kind of thing.” And the sloping road into the pond? “They used to put their horses’ nosebags on, go in and have their pint of beer and the 30
Bill Puttick From an Interview 2 horses had their nosebags off and they used to take their horse’s hoofs to walk in and to drink the water. Oh I can remember that. Oh I fell in and was pulled out the other side. But that what the pond was for, they used to stop at the Three Crowns and have their bread and cheese. They didn’t have meals like they do now. They had their bread and cheese and put the nosebags on the horses and take them down there for a drink. Along the wall was a big name plate. 'Cyclists accommodation, come in and see. Champion will get you breakfast, dinner or tea.'" (George Champion was the publican from 1884 to 1921.) "And we used to have our choir suppers there. And he being a butler and Mrs Champion having been a cook. Of course, you’ve got the old kitchen range. He used to stand there, get his knife all sharpened, this beautiful bit of beef, you know you don’t see that now, well I suppose you do in the carvery, and that was beautiful."
The Three Crowns had a large wooden hut attached that had steps that went up to the half landing where the men's toilets are. They were originally used as stables, a garage, an events room and finally the games room where there was a billiards table. It was demolished in 2004. Bill again “Outside it used to be the old stables but we used to go there, we used to have dances, what you call bog-hops in that room. You see, there was no village hall. You went up steps to go into the pub. Mrs Hammond used to come and play the piano for those dances we had." They used to make the cider there. My father said they used to make the cider at night, that’s where the dining room is now (?). It was good cider. When we used to go out of school in the summertime, we used to go round picking the apples up that dropped off the big lorry in the old sacks and then they came round with a dog cart and picked them up and take them up there. They all go in, the more rotten they were the better, it was all ground up. But you see, it was put in barrels with the bung out and all the stuff used to ferment and all the bad stuff came out. We called the top side room the Commercial Room. They used it for storage" To be concluded next month . Richard B. 31

Neighbourhood Watch - Crime News & Advice What is Operation Signature? Operation Signature is the force campaign to identify and support vulnerable victims of fraud within Sussex. Increasingly fraud is becoming more complex and deceptive, much of which is targeted at vulnerable and elderly people. Latest News: scammers are currently using new method to target elderly or vulnerable people: Victims are being called by a person who says they are calling on behalf of an internet/telephone provider and convincing them they have suspicious activity on their internet line. They then tell them if they pay a certain amount (£99 for example) they will rectify the 'issue.' The victim is then instructed to go to a particular website which enables the scammer to access their computer remotely and look at personal information such as online banking details. By accessing the victims online bank account they transfer funds from one account to another (from a business account to a personal account, for example) to make it look like there has been an overpayment. The victim sees the higher balance, has no cause to check the balance of their other account and so withdraws their own money for the scammers believing it to be an overpayment. Please do not share any information to anyone you cannot verify the identity of, if you are unsure put the phone down and call the internet company on a verified number, not one provided to you in the phone call.
Did you know? - 1 in 5 people fall victim to scams every year - Nearly 50% of all adults have been targeted by a scam Technology is enabling fraudsters to carry out attacks quicker and employ more complex behaviours to remain undetected.
What kinds of scams are there? Common fraud types are: Mail scams: con artists use fake lotteries and prize draws, get-rich-quick schemes, bogus health cures and pyramid selling to get money from their victims Investment scams: the victim is offered investment opportunities in land, fine wines, share sales or carbon credits which have little or no value Romance scams: the scammer meets someone on a dating site and gains their trust. They tell their victim they need money for a family emergency or flights over to see them Courier scams: fraudsters call and trick the victim into handing cards and PIN numbers to a courier on their doorstep (Continued on page 41)

Please bring spares, surpluses and sundries to the Little Green in the morning by 10 am, as we would like to have the chance to price up appropriately to help offset the cost of the August and June Shows. Wealden Trefoil Guild Our Guild members have had an enjoyable summer with a variety of meetings. This began with our June meeting being held in our secretary’s home, where we celebrated one of our members 80 th Birthday with a very enjoyable (if a little chilly!) evening involving lots of lovely food and drink. In July we invited members from other Guilds and our District Guide and Brownie Leaders to join us for a Beetle Drive. Much fun and laughter ensued as everyone tried to keep their dice on the table and attempted to draw a presentable beetle before it was their go again! A very successful evening which raised £40 for our funds. The August meeting was an evening walk in the Coolham area circumventing the old airfield. This was followed by an enjoyable meal at the Selsey Arms pub. Finally the September meeting saw some of members visiting the Festival Theatre in Chichester to see a production of Mack & Mabel starring Michael Ball. (Continued on page 41)

WI Report Susan Howe was our very entertaining speaker at our September meeting. She has a passion for history and a phenomenal memory for quirky and unusual facts. This is her second visit to our Institute, last time speaking about her time as PA to Sir John Betjeman and his teddy bear Archie and other British eccentrics. Last month she talked about ‘Animals in History’. We learnt about The Duke of Wellington riding his horse Copenhagen throughout the Battle of Waterloo and designing a monument to him in St Paul’s Cathedral, Florence Nightingale carrying her pet owl around in her pocket, Ernest Hemingway’s love of cats and how his home and museum in Key West is now home to 40-50 polydactyl cats (five front toes and four back), and much, much more. Susan speaks without notes and her enthusiasm for all things historical is contagious. Our next meeting is on Thursday October 1st at 8pm in the Village Hall when Heather Hook will give us an illustrated talk about her life as an Aerial Photographer. Weather Watch Wisborough Green Rainfall for August was 127mm (last year 135mm – 7 yr average is 81mm). For some unknown reason August seems to be consistently wetter than September. Over Sussex as a whole it was reported to be the wettest August since 1946! Warmest temperature for August was 31°C at Kew Gardens (presumably outside the glasshouses!). Unsurprisingly a dull August with sunshine levels 85% of the norm and looking at the August records we should have holidayed in Anglesey! There are worries about El Niño this winter being a greater problem similar to five years ago. That was a snowy winter - perhaps they will be wrong! Weathervane
CYBER TIPS E-mail Nuisance A number of people have let me know that they received e-mails from “Peter Edmonds” containing links to various websites. I assure you all that they do not come from me. In fact I have received them myself inviting me to wear my sister’s jeans among other suggestions! The latest comes from Japan. So how does this happen? Most e-mail addresses are in the public domain, just like telephone numbers. That is the essence of modern communication. The problem arises when e-mails are sent to multiple addressees not using the “BCC” facility, thereby revealing groups of people who are used to receiving e-mails together or from each other. I have discussed this in Cyber Tips more than once. From time to time one or more of the recipients will communicate with someone who knows someone who will take advantage of the information, sending e-mails that purport to come from a known individual by changing the way in which their e-mail address is revealed. Anyone can do this – it is very simple. However I will leave you to find out how it is done! All of this does not necessarily mean that my address list has been compromised, it is just another demonstration of the “Six Degrees of Separation”. Please use the “BCC” facility when sending to multiple addressees Peter Edmonds
