Pastoral Letter “Faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ.” Romans 10:17. At Her Majesty’s Coronation, the Archbishop on handing the Bible to the Queen says, “We present you with this Book, the most valuable thing that this world offers.” Many of us have a Bible, somewhere in the house, possibly in a bookcase, or on a shelf. It could be one presented to us at our Sunday School Prize giving, or at our Confirmation, or even on our wedding day. However, we may not read this most valuable book as often as we could! Year in and year out the Bible tops the ‘bestselling book list’, not just in the UK, but for all the various translations found across the world. Yet people still ask me, and I am glad they do, “How do I read my Bible and what is the best translation to buy?” The Bible is actually a collection of books, written over hundreds of years, including poetry, prose, prophesy, history and the “Good News”, the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and there are four of those! The best starting place is one of the Gospels. Mark’s Gospel could be compared to a photo album of highlights of Jesus’ life. Matthew’s Gospel is written with an understanding of Jesus fulfilling the Old Testament prophesies. Luke’s Gospel is written for a non-Jewish (Gentile) audience, making it accessible to those newly converted within the Roman Empire. Finally John’s Gospel takes a different tack from the previous three, seeing Jesus as the Living Word of God incarnate in the world to bring salvation to all (John 3:16 and 17). So may I challenge you to take up your Bible and read it. We will have free Bible reading notes available, for adults and children on Bible Sunday, the 23 rd October, at our Family Communion service. Also there are many apps and websites available for you to browse. We will be running an Alpha Course in the New Year to help people to understand more about the Christian faith and the centrality of the Bible within it. Clive and Marion
PACT News for OCTOBER Petworth Area Churches Together (PACT) - working together in harmony
PACT is hosting Rev'd Paul Cowley MBE to talk on Friday 14th October at St. Mary's Parish Church, Petworth GU28 0AD at 7.30pm. Paul Cowley's life is extraordinary. At 17 he was behind bars, at age 19 he went into the Army where he rose to become Staff Sergeant. His life was turned around in 1994 at an Alpha Course at HTB and he became involved in running home groups, and in ex offender work. He set up Alpha in Prisons and 52 prisons are now running the course. He is now the Bishops' Advisor for Prisons and Penal Affairs in the London Diocese. He was ordained in 2002 and runs a church with a staff of 42 dealing with all manner of social problems. His talk title is most interesting: ‘Having hope that things can change’ something that applies to us all, I think. Look forward to seeing you there! Prayer Chain of Prayer Worried about a loved one, a friend or yourself and would like prayers to be said by a chain of people? Contact Wendy 700295 or Gillian 700157 and they will start the chain by contacting the person next to them on the list and so it goes all the way round. A copy of the chain is on the notice board at the back of church. Prayer is a powerful and important part of life and one should never under estimate its effect. You don't need to give any details of the problem just ask for prayers to be said and it will happen. Please note that it will be treated with total confidentiality.
Prayers are offered for parishioners who are in special need, especially the sick and frail. Please advise either of the churchwardens of any persons or situations you would like remembered in this way. All those living in particular roads are prayed for regularly, the whole parish being covered over a 12-week cycle: Week beginning:

Regular Church Activities PRAYER GROUP AND QUIET MORNINGS If anyone would like to spend half an hour in fellowship and prayer then they are most welcome on a Tuesday at 4.30pm, when prayers are said for the life of the Parish. From the Editor Welcome to the October 2016 edition of Ad Vincula. We’re back to 56 pages this month, despite leaving some stuff out, but do please keep all your articles and photos coming to me at editor@stpeterswg.org.uk. There seems to a serious and growing problem with dog mess being left around the village and on country paths in the area which Ken highlights in his “Dos and Donts, Moans and Groans” page (p 21) and, as a dog owner and walker myself, I felt compelled to put a few words together as well (p 17). Wisborough Green Primary School News The new school term has already been full of creativity as we welcomed '7 billion ideas' to our school. Every child had an opportunity to present their 'big idea' about how they could change the world! Sticky tape, paper and enthusiasm filled the rooms in preparation for the final competition. There were some incredible ideas that I think really could make a difference to millions of people. Our Year 5 team pipped the others to the post with their 'Eco Gym' idea and they will compete against other schools in the locality in October next month at the grand final. Being respectful, working in unity and abundance of creativity - the pupils of Wisborough Green should be very proud of themselves. I would like to thank the Billingshurst Lions for funding this brilliant event and supporting us on the day. We are looking forward to an exciting term ahead with many more opportunities for everyone to think creatively and share their many talents. Nature Notes Walking out first thing, with yet more seeds and nuts for the waiting birds, among the dry patches of lawn there is the odd silvery cobweb now. Autumn is definitely here. The trees are turning colour, and under some of them there’s already a carpet of brown and yellow leaves. Very sadly the ash die-back disease that once seemed a distant threat, appears to be taking hold round here. Many saplings in the hedgerows have significant browning of smaller shoots, and some of the bigger trees are showing definite signs of problems. Some experts give us worrying predictions of potential losses, some as much as 95% and others hardly less drastic at 75% or so. Nobody really knows yet, but we could be facing considerable gaps in our woodlands over the next decades I fear. Let’s hope that some immunity can eventually develop. Our ashes would be sorely missed for many reasons. They are not only elegant and graceful trees, they support much varied wildlife, offer grateful shade to livestock, and to us - and ash is a favourite for wood turners and whittlers of all ages, including our grandson. For information and advice try www.woodlandtrust.org.uk On a lighter note, our resident pheasants are now never far away, and they come eagerly forward to catch the odd seed that misses the feeders. Some of you may remember we had a pheasant of dubious sexual orientation a few years ago. It was a male who gradually transitioned (I think that’s the latest word) and over several months became distinctly female. Well, we may have another one, a descendant perhaps? It’s certainly a mixture of rather odd colours at the moment, with a typically long masculine tail, long feet and bits of red around the eyes. And it is so timid, that any movement in the house makes it dash for cover. Just my luck for a photo! But maybe I’ll clean the windows and try for a picture soon! Meanwhile I have this one of a tiny yellow spider foraging for lunch amongst some rudbeckias. Poor old flying ant! The swallows are gone, starlings and spotted woodpeckers have moved on, but all the small birds are still on the feeders. This year we’ve had more greenfinches, and, happily, little sign of the virus they are vulnerable to. We hate to see them miserably sitting on the ground or a feed tray, hunched up and unable to eat. So here’s my monthly nag - please try and keep any feeders clean, with an occasional rinse of animal friendly cleanser. Also, if possible, maybe leave a few piles of leaves and twigs in a corner, to stay undisturbed till spring? If space is limited even one pile is great. Small creatures can then stake out their winter quarters - especially my favourites – the toads! Just think how many slugs they’ll eat if they creep out on a warm night! They are definitely gardeners’ friends – and, to my eyes, gorgeous! Sue J 13

CHARITY HOT AIR BALLOON FESTIVAL - 3 September 2016 Ten hot air balloons few off the green on the morning of Saturday the 3 rd in a hare and hound formation (all chasing one balloon). Afterwards the pilots, crews and passengers all enjoyed a cooked breakfast at The Three Crowns pub. £1000 was raised for Chestnut Tree House Children’s Hospice. On the following Tuesday evening to thank our sponsors we took them for a flight from Wisborough Green; The Three Crowns, Silvester Engineering Billingshurst, Fishers Farm Park, The Cricketers Arms and Airworks Worldwide. Unfortunately, bad weather on the afternoon of Saturday 3 rd, and bad weather morning and afternoon on the planned rollover day of Saturday 10 th led to the cancellation of the remainder of the festival. Is dog fouling reaching epidemic proportions? It is repeatedly mentioned in Parish Council Newsletters, it features in Ken’s “Moans & Groans” page (see p21) and, as a dog owner and walker myself, I have noticed an increasing amount of dog poo being left behind on country footpaths. There is absolutely no excuse for dog mess to be left around the Green or on pavements in the centre of the village as there are plenty of bins for people to use (Any litter bin will do). On the country footpaths around the village, although more understandable, dog mess left on paths or even to the side of a path is very unpleasant and can be dangerous to livestock and humans. There have been reports from farmers that have had animals turned away at slaughter due to worms allegedly being picked up from dog faeces. Also, if out in the countryside, please do not leave bags hanging in trees or bushes – not a pleasant sight at all – and if you are caught without a bag, use the ‘stick and flick’ method to remove from paths into the hedgerows or ditches. Incidentally, Chichester District Council has a Dog Control Order that requires anyone in charge of a dog to clean up immediately after the dog fouls on any land which is open to the air and to which the public are entitled or permitted to have access – this includes rights of way. I wonder whether the problem in the countryside is due to dogs being off the lead and their owners not always paying attention to what their dog is doing? I know myself, that my dog is quite often behind me as we walk, because he loves to stop and sniff any new smells. I have to make a conscious effort to keep turning round to check he isn’t doing something he shouldn’t without me knowing! Please keep your attention focussed on what your dog is doing and make sure you are not the one that is giving dog owners a bad name! Roland Zilz
Horsham Artists Open Studios Art Fair Following their highly successful Art Trail in July, the Horsham Artists Open Studios group is thrilled to announce its Art Fair which will run over the week-end of 22nd/23rd October at the West Sussex County offices in Chart Way, next to the Carfax. Similar to their arts event at Roffey Park last October, this event will feature the work of around sixty artists and makers including painting, fabric and wood work, jewellery and ceramics to name but a few. Included in the event will be a series of demonstrations, so allowing visitors to talk with artists and makers about their approach, the materials they use while watching the creative process as it happens. A full range of work will also be available to buy; an opportunity to pick up a Christmas present for someone – or for you! Wisborough Green Sports News Football Club After only 2 league games both 1st XI and second XI are top of their respective leagues. The 1st XI is in the Brickability West Sussex Premier League and the 2nd XI are in Division 4 North. Training has started on the green on a Tuesday evening at 6.30pm - new players welcome. Soon it will switch to Christ Hospital school please ask a club member for details on day and time. Fixtures are available on the league web site www.full-time.thefa.com this is not always reliable but is the best place to look for fixtures. Cricket Club The 1st XI were unfortunately out done by Arundel on the last game of the season and will be relegated to Division 2 of the West Sussex invitation League next season. The 2nd XI were more successful and will be promoted into division 5 of the West Sussex invitation League next season. An exciting Legends day on the green saw the 1 stXI narrowly beaten by “The Legends” in a hard fought battle. A great lunch was held in the marquee before the game and, with various competitions and an auction, a sum in the region of £10,000.00 was raised to be split between Chestnut Tree House and junior cricket development funds. Touch Rugby Training is on the green from 6.pm on a Tuesday and Thursday evening so please come along to one of the training sessions if you fancy a game. The Touch Rugby tournament was held again on the village green on Saturday 3 rd September 2016 and was won by one of the four Wisborough teams that entered. Congratulations to the Wisborough boys on their success. Stoolball The season has drawn to a close and I will try and find some information for next month. Sports Association We are raising money for the new pavilion and are holding several fund raising events in the coming year. We are kicking off proceedings with an 80’s Night in the village hall on SATURDAY 1st October. Please put the date in your diary and come along. There will be food served and a BAR. Entrance is just £15.00 a head and tickets should be available on the door. The local village DJ “Bally” will be playing his selection of 80’s music all night from 8.00pm until late. Period dress is optional but most people will be making an effort. Ken Vickery 18

Village ‘Dos & Don’ts and Moans & Groans’ Page I am not sure why I didn’t mention in my last month’s page about the “Flower show and Village Fete”. What a fantastic day we all had. Our thanks to all the organisers for all of their help not only on the day but on the days and weeks before for all of the hard work that make it such a great day for the village. Do please get involved - everybody is welcome and I am sure we can all sell a raffle ticket or run a stall. This is a huge moan this month “What is wrong with DOG owners” do they not see their dog doing DOGGY Poos??? Open your eyes and pick it up. (PS. If I see the person whose dog left a pile outside MY front gate I will return it in person to their front door). Also I have an on -going complaint from a couple in the Durban’s road who are having problems with dog piles (see picture RIGHT) outside their back gate which leads onto a field. If it is your dog leaving it, please pick it up. A “DO” for this month is Do wait for the conkers to fall from the trees “DON’T” smash the trees to bits and then crush the green shuck as the juice from the shuck will stain your clothes if you get it on them. (It comes out as brown blotches that do not wash out.) In early September it was my wife’s birthday. We sat at home three days before trying to decide where to go for an evening meal. What thoughts do you all have on some local pubs that I could add to my list? What experiences good or bad have you had? Let me know and I will run a good food guide mentioning a couple of good and not-so -good pubs each month. We ended up going to the Half Moon in Kirdford. Food was very good and service was good considering they had a wedding in the Teepee in the back garden - excellent value for money. Rumour has it that the “Bat and Ball” is to return following the closure of “The Wisborough”. I did try to get in there on the cricket roller one day but was told it was the wrong type of “Roller”! No wonder they closed. Roads and footpaths in the village continue to be a concern with dark mornings and evenings upon us once again. Remember if you don’t report potholes in the roads and pavements they will not be repaired. Village Hall Improvement Plans Many thanks to everyone who took the time to visit the exhibition of pictures and display of the plans for the Hall at the village fete. I am delighted to say that overall there was very positive support for the plans and a number of useful ideas were put forward.
Village Hall News
The project team will be meeting again soon to discuss the feedback received and to begin planning and preparing the first stage of the formal consultation with the community. I believe that we are well on the way to achieving the right balance between modernising the Hall facilities whilst retaining (in some cases reinstating) the wonderful heritage features of the Hall building. Bear in mind though that there are a number of potential challenges to being able to carry out any plans. The Hall is Grade II listed and any proposed changes will need the support of the Heritage team at Chichester. Those discussions may be difficult. Planning consent will also be needed of course and we will need to make a number of applications for grant monies to top up the funds that we already hold for the Hall. Our best chance of successful outcomes in meeting all of these challenges will be to have the strong support of the community. Thus, it is especially important that the process of consultation is open and inclusive and the community is provided with all the information that it needs in order to make an informed decision about the plans. This is your Hall. So, when the time comes, please do look carefully at the consultation documents and plans and, if you like what you see, make a positive indication of support. The grant making bodies and the teams at Chichester will not accept silence as an indication of support! Look out for more news about the consultation. August Bank Holiday Weekend The “Weekend” actually started on Thursday 25 August with a cricket match between a Cricket Legends XI captained by Phillip DeFreitas (retired England Cricketer) and Wisborough Green All Stars. The match was preceded by a three-course lunch in the marquee with entertainment and auction. See Sports Page (p 18) for more. On Friday 26 August, there was an evening of entertainment with Willie Austen in the marquee. Willie was fantastic as always, getting everybody up and dancing all night. The event was very successful raising £500 for Chestnut Tree House. Many thanks to Craig and the team at The Cricketers for organising. On Bank Holiday Monday 29 August the sun eventually shone for the first time in three years!! The public turned up in their thousands to enjoy all the fun of the Fete and the Fun Dog Show on the Green and the Horticultural Show in the marquee.
Thank you from the Fete! We would like to say a very big thank you to everyone who helped to make this year’s August Bank Holiday Village Fete and Horticultural Society Flower Show such a fantastic event. The wonderful bank holiday sunshine brought a huge crowd to this year’s event to enjoy the afternoon of family fun and entertainment and, despite the drama of the mini tornado, many stayed on into the early evening. Final figures are being added up as we speak; so we hope to be able to report on the society’s donations to local good causes shortly. As always the Fete would be nothing without the many volunteers and helpers. Thank you to every single one of you who help to make it such a wonderful and special day. Wisborough Green Fete Society
Wisborough Green Horticultural Society The August Show was a great success and not to have another wet day was an added bonus! Though the entries were down a little the marquee looked a treat especially with the new black cloth on the tables. The cookery judge provided a little nugget of information........do not put poisonous flowers to decorate your cake. (You know who you are, WG resident!) A big thank you to all who played their part – this event does not “just happen” – it was much appreciated by all the visitors to the big top. Before long the planning starts for next year! Time For God Pet Service
Took Place Sunday 11th September 2016 10.30am Normally I go for a long walk on a Sunday morning, but this Sunday my owner took me to St Peter’s Church! I met other dogs plus two cats (they were in baskets shame!) I also met some songbirds in a cage which were very chatty, but I didn’t really understand what they were saying! We listened to the people singing and the Vicar talking about the importance of pets to humans and the way they help many people come to terms with difficult circumstances in their lives. There were lots of things for the humans to do. The little ones had their faces painted expertly - a few of them looked like me! I had treats out in the sunshine while the humans had their drink and cake. Some were wearing the tee shirts that they had decorated earlier - it was great fun and all of us dogs were told there might be another one next year! I understand there is another Time For God Service on 9 th October, I’m not invited … but all the rest of the family are! I heard the Vicar saying it’s going to be about God’s Amazing Love for everyone, with lots of activities and cake again! Rover - Special Correspondent for Ad Vincula

Recipe of the Month
Iced Bramble Flummery A lovely way to spend an hour or two at this time of the year is to go blackberrying and then go home and eat the delicious black fruits. They freeze very well and make comforting winter crumbles, but this is a lovely, simple recipe for warmer days. Although these are lovely as they are it's sometimes nice to serve a lovely thin shortbread with them. Ingredients 450g/1lb blackberries 300ml/1/2pint double cream 1 pint milk Juice of a large lemon 100g/4oz caster sugar A few fresh blackberries and mint to garnish Method 1. Put the blackberries into a food processor and whiz until smooth. Sieve, saving the juice and discard the pips. 2. Whisk the cream until you have soft peaks. Stir in the purée, lemon juice, milk and sugar and mix well. 3. Put into a plastic container, cover and freeze overnight or a minimum of 12 hours. 4. Remove from the freezer and thaw just enough to cut into large chunks with a knife. Whiz again in the processor until smooth and a thick pouring consistency. 5. Pour into individual ramekins, cover with cling film and freeze until needed. 6. To serve, remove the ramekins from the freezer about 15 minutes before serving so that they can soften a bit. Wisborough Green History - WISBOROUG Continuing the wartime memories of Gerald Andrews when he came to Wisborough as an evacuee and was billeted with Mr and Mrs Skinner in Durbans Road. On his first day he awaited the return of Mr Skinner from his workplace . . . "We asked where Mr Skinner is and were told he was working on the farm and would be home shortly. The smell of the house was something special. We found out the aroma came from all the fruit in the kitchen that had been grown on the farm. It was now dark outside and a man walked in. He was dressed differently from London men as he was wearing a cap, breeches, boots and gaiters. The gaiters were full length which finished beneath his knees. Underneath his jacket he wore a waistcoat, a chain hung from a button hole in his waistcoat and the other end of the chain went to a little pocket in the waistcoat. This fascinated me and (I found out later that evening there was a watch hanging on it). This man of course was Mr. Skinner; he looked a very happy man and was smiling all over his face. We sat down at the dining table for tea. Mr. Skinner cut the bread. All the time I lived there, tea was the same. Bread and butter and sometimes a tomato to start with, then came bread and homemade jam, (you could not go straight into the bread and jam), finishing up with a piece of homemade cake. We always had our main meal at midday. Mr. Skinner always cut the meat from the joint at the table. We always had cold meat on Sundays. This was because Mr. and Mrs. Skinner went to church. It was a lovely way of life and I was very lucky to be part of it.

Off to bed we went, we were very nervous I am sure, we had no light left on for us but there was a sky light above the door which let a small amount of light in. It was decided during the evening that we should call Mr. and Mrs. Skinner Mum and Dad through the war. The next morning when we returned to Wisborough Green School, we were all taken onto the village green where the goal posts are today and were read the riot act, the (Continued on page 35)

problem seemed to be there was not an Apple or Pear left on the trees in the playground. We were then taken to the workhouse which was by the churchyard, it was a dump. History states that in the Napoleonic wars it housed prisoners, and in the 1914 to 1918 war it housed German Prisoners. Now in 1939 it is to be used as a school for us. The toilets for the boys were buckets in a shed in the corner of the ground. The stairs to the rooms on the first and second floors were made of iron and were attached to the outside of the building, the floors inside were bouncy and felt unsafe, it was quite frightening at first. There were no desks, just rows and rows of chairs. All I can remember is reading out loud and reciting the times table and if we did not know them when it was your turn you got a good talking to. Sometimes more severe punishment was dealt out. My schooling was a disaster especially at Wisborough Green. The teachers were ‘has beens’ bless them. I believe they were employed just to keep us under control and to keep us happy which I suppose was fair enough due to the circumstances. We had a field, I would say was where the school is now and on that land became a mini farm. We grew vegetables and had dozens of hutches full of different breeds of rabbits, long hair, short hair, black, white and some had long ears. Most days we would go and collect rabbit food. I assume we ate the rabbits and sold the fur. We also kept goats, I do not know why; perhaps someone was making goat's cheese. Our schooling got worse as the war progressed, practical activities became more important. In the summer we would earn a few coppers by going fruit picking up the farm. This was not in school time but we did go potato picking during school time, this I suppose was more important. This was well organised, each person (I say person because there were men, women and children) would be in a line from one end of the field to the other, the length between you and the next person would depend on how quick you were able to pick up the potatoes. A horse pulling the potato spinner would come along and spin them out of the ground and off you would go picking the potatoes up as fast as you could and putting them in a hundredweight (cwt) sack. (A cwt sack is the equivalent to 112 pounds.) The reading room, which is now a garage (it's since become living accommodation RB), was used as a classroom by us infants, (I attended here and at the workhouse.) I never attended Wisborough Green School until the schools were amalgamated and then I was taught by West Sussex teachers. The school had to observe the war time rules which meant that strips of paper were pasted to the windows in the form of an X to stop the glass from splintering if a bomb dropped nearby. The main school also had blast walls in front of the doors which led to the playground. (I climbed up on these one evening and got onto the school roof and rang the school bell. Oh boy, did I get into trouble for this; I did not know at the time that this was a signal for an invasion). Although the school was not to be used after sunset, they were instructed to observe the blackout rules and curtains had to be hanging in place. As colder weather is approaching, protect half-hardy plants with fleece or bring into a frost-free greenhouse or conservatory. Once the first frosts have blackened Dahlia foliage, lift tubers and store in a dry frost free environment over the winter months. Lift Begonia tubers and Gladioli corms and remove the dead foliage before storing them. Plant daffodil, tulip and Allium bulbs for a glorious spring display. Time to plant spring bedding such as wallflowers, Bellis, Primulas and winter pansies. Harvest squashes and pumpkins before the first frosts. Finish harvesting beans and peas. When beans and peas finish cropping simply cut the plant away at ground level, leaving the roots in the soil. These crops fix nitrogen which is slowly released into the soil as the roots break down. Continue planting autumn garlic and onions for a bumper earlier crop next summer. Any plants with green tomatoes or peppers remaining can be hung upside down indoors to ripen. Clear the straw from around the base of strawberry plants to increase ventilation. Shear back old foliage to encourage fresh new growth. Divide congested clumps of rhubarb by digging up and splitting into several pieces with a spade. Re-plant the healthiest looking pieces. Remove the netting from fruit cages to allow birds to catch and eat any pests that are lurking there.

Wisborough Green Short Mat Bowls Club There is just one fixture to report since the last issue, this was a narrow defeat away at Alfold. On mat 1 Jane Adsett, David Luxford, Bernard Adsett and Monica Enticknap won 23 shots to 18, on mat 2 Audrey Hodgson, Dawn Smith, Tony Broughton and Reg Snelgar lost a close game 17 shots to 20. Finally on mat 3 Hilary Nulty, Marilyn Knight, Shirley Bundy and Pauline Shipway also lost in another close game 16 shots to 21, which meant a 3 shot defeat overall. The club did enter a team in an all day competition hosted by Ashington against some very good league teams, this is hopefully the first of many such ventures now we have affiliated with the West Sussex County and English Short Mat Associations. Wisborough Green Horticultural Society Saturday 1st October 10.30am - Autumn Plant Sale Monday 3rd October 8pm Talk by Geoff Ace on “Planning your Planting” On Monday 3rd October at 8pm retired expert horticulturalist Geoff Ace from Merrist Wood, near Guildford will speak on “Planning Your Planting”. Merrist Wood has had many successes at RHS Chelsea and Hampton Court Flower Shows, so Geoff knows a thing or two. The Table Top Competition starts again. It accompanies the evening talks and AGM and will be the same every time: “From your own garden or allotment five flowering (preferably) or evergreen stems displayed to best effect.” The points awarded each month are cumulative. WI Report Thursday, 1st September was the WI’s first meeting after our summer break. John Nash, retired fruit farm manager of Kirdford came to give us a very illuminating talk about apples in Sussex. The history of apples in general and the formation of Kirdford Growers. Did you know that apples have been around in some form or other for 40 million years? I believe him because I asked my husband and he remembers them 40 million years ago! John also identified several apples that members had brought along. Our next meeting is on the 6th October. Marcus Finch has tried to teach us how to paint previously and now he will try again but this time we will add our individual expertise on items that we have brought to decorate rather than paint a picture. I’m sure we will all rise to the occasion. Bring taster pots & items with you if possible please. We have a fund raiser on the 12th November. We are running a Murder Mystery evening at the Village Hall (see poster on p 25). Tickets are selling quickly so please put your orders in. £15 will give you a meal and entertainment. Weather Watch Wisborough Green Rainfall for August was 33mm (127mm last year – my 8 yr average is 87mm). August was a dry month for East Anglia and the South-East but for the rest of the UK it was very wet. The summer for the UK, as a whole, was the wettest since 1912. Lowest temperature was minus 2.4°C at Braemar, Aberdeenshire and the highest was 32.4°C at Cavendish, Suffolk. Sunshine levels in England were 86% of the 1981-2010 mean. The summer comprises June, July and August and for us in WG I think it has been pretty good! Weathervane
CYBER TIPS Beware e-mail scams Exactly four years ago I penned my first Cyber Tip, and I wrote this: “Have you wondered how scammers get hold of your e-mail address and use it in an attempt to beguile other people into parting with their money? Well, it might be your own fault!” I told of how many e-mailers place multiple addressees in the “To” or “CC” (Carbon Copy) windows. This will mean that all recipients receive all the addresses. I continued: “On the other hand if you send the e-mail to yourself and place all the addressees in the “BCC” (Blind Carbon Copy) window, each addressee will see only their own. Why is this important?” It doesn’t take too many forwards before a very large number email addresses fall into the hands of the unscrupulous who will use the collected addresses for, at the very least, nuisance purposes. There are ways that the unscrupulous can make an e-mail appear to be from a friend or family member. If you open the e-mail, (just opening an e-mail is generally safe) it will usually contain a sales pitch for something you surely do not want; or, worse still, a link to a web address that you sure do not want to open, for it may contain one or more of the many “nasties” that occur on the internet. Finally NEVER REPLY to these e-mails, for the sender will have confirmation of your address and will probably continue to bother you!
