Pastoral Letter “The God of Heaven will give us success. We His servants will start Rebuilding.” Nehemiah 2:20 Our village Church is not only a local landmark, a grade one listed building and an amazing structure. It is a place of worship, prayer and reflection that is available from dawn to dusk everyday for any who wish to visit. As many of you are aware, there have, over the years been improvements made to the facilities offered, that folk from our community have funded. We are soon to begin this new phase of work which will see our organ, that has been removed for an overhaul, returned and replaced within a new framework. Also the Vestry below will take on a new lease of life, becoming the much needed loo and baby changing facility. The work will, we hope, be completed by Christmas. In the new year we hope to complete the project with better access to the Church with a welcome area, servery and new Vestry areas with some unique glass work incorporated into the structure that will enhance the interior of the Church. Nehemiah, who wrote the words above, was moved by the Spirit of God to seek to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. He was Cup Bearer to the King of Persia ‘Artaxerxes’, a very responsible position and had heard from fellow Jews, who had returned from rebuilding the Temple, that the walls of the city gave them little if no protection. So Nehemiah asked the King’s permission to go and oversee the rebuilding of the wall (445-432 BC). This was done amidst setbacks, opposition and a sense of, ‘is this too 5 much?’ These are similar to sentiments that we may have experienced, not necessarily related to building projects but to life in general. Nehemiah could have been discouraged and given up, but he never the less trusted that the ‘Lord’, the ‘God of Heaven’ would see him through, and He did. Here the project in St. Peter’s has been many years in the making and we are at last seeing the fruit of much hard work. You also may have a project you wish to see completed, or there may be an obstacle to overcome. So in the words of ‘Proverbs 3, verses 5 and 6, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.”

Regular Church Activities PRAYER GROUP AND QUIET MORNINGS If anyone would like to spend half an hour in fellowship and prayer then they are most welcome on a Tuesday at 4.30pm, when prayers are said for the life of the Parish. Prayer Chain of Prayer Worried about a loved one, a friend or yourself and would like prayers to be said by a chain of people? Contact Wendy 700295 or Gillian 700157 and they will start the chain by contacting the person next to them on the list and so it goes all the way round. A copy of the chain is on the notice board at the back of church. Prayer is a powerful and important part of life and one should never under estimate its effect. You don't need to give any details of the problem just ask for prayers to be said and it will happen. Please note that it will be treated with total confidentiality.
Prayers are offered for parishioners who are in special need, especially the sick and frail. Please advise either of the churchwardens of any persons or situations you would like remembered in this way. All those living in particular roads are prayed for regularly, the whole parish being covered over a 12-week cycle: Week beginning:

Friday 13th October - Autumn Lecture with Danny Kruger, 7.30pm St Mary's Petworth Danny Kruger is Chief Executive of the West London Zone, a partnership of charities, working with children and young people to help them grow up safe, happy and healthy. Danny was previously Chief Executive of Only Connect from 2005 – 2015, a Christian charity helping young offenders to find their way in society. Danny lives in the shadow of Grenfell Tower on a Council Estate and will be sharing about this within his talk. Promises to be an enlightening evening. Wisborough Green Primary School News With the summer well and truly behind us, it doesn't seem possible that we are having discussions about Christmas already! The children have returned to school full of creativity after the summer and we are very excited about our learning this term. The year 6 children were whisked off to PGL activity centre, on the Isle of Wight, where they overcame some of their greatest fears, challenged their thinking skills and had lots of fun! It was great that I was able to spend some time with them and I was incredibly proud of their resilience, collaboration and care for each other. Once again we have planned a busy term and we are looking forward to the Savage Stone Age experience, the invasion of historical tribes and journeys into the world beyond. This term we are focusing on developing our computing skills, with the introduction of some exciting new resources. All the children will learn how to use coding to control different devices to further challenge their creative thinking skills. Is anything really possible with our every changing technological world? We are ready to find out! Welcoming visitors to our school is something we love and this term is no exception. We will be celebrating Grandparent, Language and Outdoor Learning to name a few with members of our local community. If you would like to visit our school then we have two open days planned this term. You will have the opportunity to have a look around the school and talk to staff and children on: Tuesday 14 th November from 9.30 am to 11.30 am and Monday 20th November from 2 pm. Hilary Wyatt Formerly of Cranleigh and Wisborough Green, died peacefully at home in Pulborough aged 70 on 29th August 2017 after a short illness, bravely borne. Beloved wife of John, mother of James and Noel, grandmother of Noah, Olive, Ryan and Taylor, and sister of Rob and Lawrie. Always so kind, caring and thoughtful, and will be sadly missed by her family and many friends. "Family is everything".

Nature Notes The Flower Show was a great success this year, garnering huge crowds and making us feel puny for not entering anything – will try harder next year, if only with a funny shaped vegetable (we’ve had several). Then I got a call to say I’d won a raffle prize. Shortly afterwards a lovely golden Helenium appeared on the doorstep. (thank you for the delivery!) When I went to plant it, I realised one stem had a flower with two back-to-back faces – quite a surprise. * Meanwhile out in the fields more golden things – this time finches, feeding voraciously on the knapweed. We’ve had several huge flocks of goldfinches, adults and youngsters, quartering the field, and they’ve been seen in Plaistow and elsewhere. An impressive sight, and extremely noisy! The blackbirds and robins have finished their broods and many young birds are moving on now. The swallows will soon be away, and I begin to accept that autumn is here. A bit of Indian Summer would be lovely, so fingers crossed. The good news is that we’ve heard owls around again. So fingers even more tightly crossed for our surviving youngsters. (Any reports welcome). The last few butterflies are still flitting and we have hornets tapping on the windows at night until we close the curtains. They’re quite noisy, but don’t pose any threat if left alone. I’ve seen them a few times around the last blackberries. And talking of blackberries, there’s been a bumper crop this year! There are so many different fruits, 13 aren’t there, lots of shapes and sizes, and some smaller ones are the tastiest too. But we’ve hardly seen anyone picking them! It seems rather sad, when they’re free, and so delicious added to an apple pie. We’ve been sent some remarkable pictures of a sparrow hawk with its prey. It’s always quite hard to see a kill, but they are a great indicator of a healthy bird population, and they have to eat and feed their young - just like us. On visiting friends near Cambridge recently, I found a young male dead under their hedge, hit by a car we think. So I was happy to see our female zipping about when we got home. And of course the buzzards, multi-coloured as some seem to be this year, are very much around too. Now here’s my usual plea about bonfires and hedges! Please build bonfires as last minute as possible, and do check for wildlife before lighting. And where it doesn’t cause a problem please avoid Sparrowhawk by Gilbert Allan cutting/strimming the growth directly under hedge bottoms. They’re a wildlife corridor for many small mammals and invertebrates etc, helping them through the winter. I was glad to see nice growth left along some Fishers Farm hedges after the verges were done a while ago, so thanks Tim! NB * I am ignoring any possible implications of the two-faced flower. I do assure you there was no skulduggery involved with the raffle – nor indeed when I won an excellent trowel that I still happily use today! But next year? Who knows…..? Sue J
COG (Cross Over Group of Churches Activity Day - how did it go? It was the summer holidays, Wednesday 23rd August, the weather forecast for the day was good!! The giant gazebo was up in the Vicarage garden, just in case, and was decorated in bright bunting. Gill started the day off with songs to introduce us to the theme that we are chosen to be a friend of Jesus.

We then launched into activities. Making a paper boat, making it float with a jelly baby in it! Making bread rolls, some to take home and the other to form part of a sharing loaf, which was shared in the afternoon before the final worship session. There were also fruit kebabs to make, friendship bracelets and pasta jewellery too, plus little boxes to decorate and put a gift inside for a friend. We printed our hands on a huge heart and thought about how Jesus commands us to love each other as He loves us.
After our picnic lunch there were team games, the lions versus the tigers and many of the children had their faces painted, not just as animals (with the Zootropolis theme) but they looked great!

Special Outing to Sheffield Park Wednesday 18 October 2017 Sheffield Park and Garden at Uckfield is famous for its autumn colour and is the season the garden was planted for - the leaf colours range from lime green to bright red. The reflections in the lakes add to the splendour. The garden is a horticultural work of art, formed through centuries of landscape design, with influences of Capability Brown and Humphrey Repton. Four lakes form the heart of the garden, with paths circulating through the glades and wooded areas surrounding them. The historic parkland dates back several centuries and is now grazed with livestock and is home to a wildlife haven, Skyglade, and has a natur al wood land pl a y tr ai l, Ringwood Toll. The Coach House Tea-room serves hot and cold meals as well as traditional cream teas, all food prepared on site using fresh ingredients. At the time of writing, we have 6 places left on the minibus on Wednesday 18th 17 October. The cost is ÂŁ18 to include minibus fare and entry to the Park. If you are a member of the National Trust or the Royal Horticultural Society, the cost would just be the minibus fare of ÂŁ6. If you are not already a member of the Minibus Association, you can join for free for this trip and your membership will last until the end of the year. St Peter's Choir On Friday 17th November 7.30pm - 8.30pm, we begin rehearsals for our annual Carol Service, which will be on Sunday 17th December at 6pm. Rehearsals will be the same time every Friday until the event. We are now waiting for the decision from Chichester DC regarding our application for planning consent, so there is no further news to convey on that subject at present. We hope that a decision will be reached in the next few weeks. I shall report further progress in due course. As you may have seen (see below), a Table Top Sale will be held at the village hall on Saturday 7th October in aid of hall funds. This proved to be a popular and enjoyable event last year and will once again provide a great opportunity for people to find some unusual gifts in the lead up to Christmas. The Hall project team will also provide another opportunity for people to review details of the plans for the modernisation project via an exhibition of plans and pictures in the Vine Room while the table top sale is taking place in the main hall. August Bank Holiday Fet Thank you from the Fete! Glorious Bank Holiday weather provided the perfect backdrop to this year’s Fete. The fabulous Black Swan Border Morris, resplendent in their black and purple tatter coats, provided a lively opening to the afternoon. Despite the hot weather, there was a fantastic turn out for the Fun Dog Show while, over on the race track, long queues for the inaugural Wellie Wanging competition suggest that it will become a popular addition to the Fete – it proved an addictive challenge! The Fete Committee would like to say a very big thank you to everyone who helped us pull it all together – from those who were up bright and early to get the Green ready, those who helped run stalls, refreshments and events, to those who stayed behind to clear up at the end of a long day. Our fete simply wouldn’t happen without you all! 26

te and Horticultural Show WG Horticultural Society A great August Horticultural and Craft Show on what was the warmest Bank Holiday on record. Thank you to everyone who entered classes and those who came to admire the entries - as with anything like this a lot of work goes on behind the scenes, so grateful thanks also to all the backstage crew! For the list of Cup Winners please see page 45. It was encouraging to see new people taking part which is good news for the future. Horticultural entries were down slightly, probably due to seasonal factors, but a great improvement in entries for flower arranging (please keep this up!). Cookery, Crafts and the Juniors were well supported but a big increase in Photography - digital cameras must be helping here - photographic judge had her work cut out! You do have to be aware of keeping within the rules as many of us have had NAS (not as schedule) written on our entry card. This can include not the right number, entry size too large, or even icing a cake which apparently turns it into a gateau! We learn for next year (or not!). W.G. Horticultural Society 27

WISBOROUGH GREEN CHARI Unfortunately the weather was not kind to us again this year. The Festival was planned for Sunday 3rd September. The forecast was strong winds and rain that day so the decision was made to move both flights to the Saturday. Seven balloons took off from the Village Green - a truly spectacular sight, with sunshine, clear skies and gentle winds. Each balloon carried passengers who had made a donation to "Chestnut Tree House Children's Hospice" All were invited back to a delicious buffet breakfast at the Three Crowns" The scheduled flight for Saturday evening proved to be quite a challenge for the organisers. Take off was to be from a private local field as a cricket match was in progress on the Green that afternoon. The forecast wind however was to take the balloons towards Gatwick Airport, not a good idea! A plan was then made to move everyone further south, and fly back towards Wisborough Green. However the gusting wind proved too strong for a safe flight. So.... some highs and lows, but our aim is to raise money for the charity and we are pleased to say over ÂŁ1300 has been raised so far, with some donations still to come.

Over the years we have found it very difficult to let the public know accurately when the schedule is changed! We did use social media this year to inform (and unfortunately so did others!) so we would like to apologise to anyone that came to see the balloons on Sunday and were disappointed. We'll be trying harder next year! We would like to thank the pilots and crews who give their balloons and time to support this annual charity event. Our thanks too, to our passengers who not only donated generously, but were prepared to re-schedule their weekend to fly. FESTIVE CRUISES ON THE WEY & ARUN CANAL Bookings are already being taken for the extremely popular Santa Cruises which will be running on 10th, 17th, 21st, 22nd and 23rd December. Trips depart at 11am, 12noon and 2.00pm and cost £10 per person to include festive refreshments and a gift from Santa for all children under 12 years of age. There will also be a Santa Cruise for the Grown-ups on Friday 15th December, 7.30 – 9.00pm. Recipe of the Month PARMA-WRAPPED CHICKEN BREASTS WITH RICOTTA STUFFING This recipe is great for those times when you need to prepare ahead for supper or a dinner party as the chicken breasts can be stuffed and wrapped and stored in the fridge the day before. I would recommend serving with the Braised Red Cabbage (recipe below) and maybe mashed potato.
Ingredients 34
1 small tub of ricotta 1 tablespoon crème fraiche 2 handsfuls of baby spinach, roughly chopped 50g chopped dried apricots Half bunch of spring onions, chopped 1 teaspoon chopped fresh tarragon Freshly grated nutmeg 2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese 4 chicken breasts 8 thin slices of Parma ham Glass of chicken stock (optional)
Method 1. Preheat the oven to 180 degrees C/gas mark 4. 2. Combine the ricotta, crème fraiche, spinach, apricots, spring onions, tarragon, nutmeg and Parmesan and season well with salt and pepper. 3. Make a pocket in each chicken breast and fill with the ricotta mixture. Wrap each breast in 2 slices of Parma ham. Put a glass of chicken stock or water in a casserole dish, lay the chicken breasts in it, cover and cook for 25 minutes in the preheated oven. After this time, remove the cover and continue to cook for a further 10 minutes or until cooked.
BRAISED RED CABBAGE Ingredients
1 small red cabbage 3 tablespoons white wine vinegar 2 tablespoons sugar 4 apples, peeled and cored and grated 1 teaspoon ground cumin 2 teaspoons ground coriander 4 whole cloves

Method 1. Preheat the oven to 170 degrees C/gas mark 3. 2. Remove the outer leaves from the cabbage, quarter it, remove the core and finely shred. In a bowl, combine with all the rest of the ingredients and pack into a heavy casserole. 3. Bake in preheated oven for 2 hours, stirring occasionally to prevent anything catching.

As colder weather is approaching, protect half-hardy plants with fleece or bring into a frost-free greenhouse or conservatory. Once the first frosts have blackened Dahlia foliage, lift tubers and store in a dry frost free environment over the winter months. Lift Begonia tubers and Gladioli corms and remove the dead foliage before storing them. Plant daffodil, tulip and Allium bulbs for a glorious spring display. Time to plant spring bedding such as wallflowers, Bellis, Primulas and winter pansies. Harvest squashes and pumpkins before the first frosts. Finish harvesting beans and peas. When beans and peas finish cropping simply cut the plant away at ground level, leaving the roots in the soil. These crops fix nitrogen which is slowly released into the soil as the roots break down Continue planting autumn garlic and onions for a bumper earlier crop next summer. Any plants with green tomatoes or peppers remaining can be hung upside down indoors to ripen. Clear the straw from around the base of strawberry plants to increase ventilation. Shear back old foliage to encourage fresh new growth. Divide congested clumps of rhubarb by digging up and splitting into several pieces with a spade. Re-plant the healthiest looking pieces. Remove the netting from fruit cages to allow birds to catch and eat any pests that are lurking there.

Wisborough Green History - JAMES Last month I described Graveley Brothers' garage and workshop including examples of the vehicles upon which they worked. After Vernon Graveley died in 1956, Jack sold the service station business to Vernon Wilde but kept the workshop (now Butts Works). Jack Graveley retained ownership of the workshops though work for Vernon Wilde took precedence. This was all under the control of Ernie Richardson. The Butts Works filling station business ceased and its petrol pumps removed, although one of its pumps was left in place when the others were removed; this is the distinctive pump that stands today. Vernon E Wilde, commonly known as Jimmy after a famous boxer, converted the front of Thornton House to a filling station called Wilde’s Service Station. There were three petrol pumps selling National Benzole on a central island that had a kiosk at each end. All of the petrol was leaded as was the norm in the fifties. This varied in octane according to the amount 36 of lead in the petrol, i.e. more lead made for better performance in a highly tuned engine. Each of the three types of petrol was identified by a number of stars that indicated the amount of lead added, five being the highest. Petrol cost 4/6½ (23p) for a gallon of two star petrol (or 5p per litre), 4/10 for four star and 5/- for a gallon of five star petrol. The rather poor quality photo, enlarged from an aerial view that was taken circa 1962 shows the service station's central island. Also of interest is the field behind upon which Butts Meadow has now been built (I believe that the white blobs are sheep). The new filling station sold typical filling station products such as oil, tyres and paraffin. When first built the access to the pumps was at right angles to the road and quite dangerous so the access was enlarged to make it easier for cars to get to the pumps. In 1959, he started selling second hand cars and for this purpose a single storey car showroom was added to the left of Thornton House and which was built by Pat Crichton-Smith. This is shown on the photo. Wilde sold the business and the filling station part of Thornton House to Charles Hodgson around 1962. Charles Hodgson continued the garage and filling station business but changed the name to Pimpernel Garage; he also changed the name of Thornton House to Pimpernel House. He, too, sold second hand cars in the showroom to the left where he also had a small workshop. Whether for safety regulations or not, he installed

Hodgson's ownership of the business only lasted a short time for in June 1968 he sold the business to Amoco. Meanwhile at Butts Works, Ernie Richardson moved to a new garage in Ifold during this period. A new manager, George Gabriel, was taken on to run the workshops. George Gabriel and Roy Nash became tenants of Amoco. Both lived in Pimpernel House; George ran the small workshop that was immediately left of the filling station and Roy ran the filling station and the car sales business that was further to the left. Around 1970, Amoco converted the workshop into two bays. By now there were four pumps in the forecourt plus a paraffin pump next to the shop and the showroom selling vintage and classic cars was owned by ITC 37 Trading. However, after eight years, George and Roy decided not renew their lease. Modernisation had continued and a modern canopy was erected in 1976 after a long battle with the village that had wanted a tiled roof. Amoco sold the garage to Elf in 1981 and the business was run by Brian and Midge Cecil and later by Peter O’Leary and Carole Sandaver. The two photos were taken in the garage's latter days in 1998. It closed the following year because EU fire legislation required new petrol tanks to be installed which Elf could not justify economically. The showroom and workshops were demolished and Pimpernel House became a private dwelling. I haven't dates for the more recent tenants (or maybe even their correct names!) so I'd be very pleased if someone could enlighten me. Continued next month Richard B

Local Club and Society News Wisborough Green Short Mat Bowls Club Wisborough Green travelled to Ashington for a friendly match on Thursday evening 17th August, with Wisborough putting up a superb performance by winning on all three mats. Mat 1 (Jane, David, Bernard and Monica) winning 20-17, Mat 2 (Tony, Marilyn, Gavin and Dave) winning 21-15 and Mat 3 (Alex, Derek, Lorraine and George) winning 25-17 giving a Match Result of 66 - 49. Monday 4th September was Club Finals Day and an excellent day was had by all, with all the finals being very competitive and all going to the final end. In the Club Championship, Bernard Adsett lost to Tony Broughton by 12 shots to 8. In the Pairs, Monica Enticknap and Audrey Hodgson won against David Luxford and Carol Cuthbert by 12 shots to 10. The Friendly Market Our beautiful traditional English village is just the sort of place to have a community enterprise such as the Wisborough Green Farmers Marketplus, which this year celebrated its 15th birthday. As we all know, all over the country supermarkets are putting local shops out of business, and it was as a result of the closure of three WG village shops (and the petrol station) that a group of enthusiastic villagers got together and started our own monthly Farmers Market. Since then it has grown to about 25 stalls and is still completely organised by village volunteers as a service to the community. By reducing food miles, the Market offers a marvellous opportunity for environmentally friendly local buying and selling each month. It also promotes and encourages the best of the English way of life where everybody helps and gets to know each other. This benefits us all – stallholders, customers, villagers and local communities. It also contributes to the wealth of the local economy by using local resources and helping reinvestment within the area. That said, the Market also cares about agricultural producers in the less developed world by having a Fair Trade stall run by volunteers from the Parish Church. Village school children and teachers often visit, sometimes taking a stall to sell the pupils own produce which helps develop their maths, social interaction skills and general understanding of how the world works. Everybody arriving at the Market is very warmly welcomed to what has become not only a Farmers Market, but a social meeting place where refreshments, by way of tea, coffee and cake, made and served by volunteers from the local Macmillan Cancer Care Support team, can be enjoyed in company. No wonder we are known as the ‘friendly Market’! The Market is wholly non-profit making and we are happy to contribute Market gift vouchers as prizes to village organisations to help their fundraising events. WI Report For our September meeting Judy Springings brought her spinning wheels, wool, and various sorts of fibre to show us and demonstrated how to spin. Practically the only thing missing was the sheep from which she obtains her basic materials. She explained about the different types of wool and fibres that can be spun and how she dyes her wool with natural dyes, even the dye made from elderberries is not what you would think. She did say that the only fibre that cannot be spun is human hair and cat hair! So just to dispel this, one member brought in her combings from her Persian cat which Judy proceeded to spin with some degree of success!! We all came away a good deal more knowledgeable than before the meeting. For our October 5th meeting Nicci Anderson from Wiltshire Foods will be coming to explain about their company and she promises to bring tastings which always go down well with us. We have booked a table at the table top sale on the 7 th October at the Village Hall so if any member could remember to bring item/items to sell we would be very grateful. August was an unsettled month and has so far continued into September. However August Bank Holiday was the warmest on record - good for the fete! Wisborough Green Rainfall for August was 72mm – last year 33mm and my 9 yr average 81mm. Highest temperature in August was 28.9°C at St Helier, (Jersey) and the coldest temp was recorded at Kinbrace (Sutherland) 1.9°C. Higher night-time temperatures have been notable again. WEST SUSSEX DECORATIVE & FINE ARTS SOCIETY Change of name The worldwide association known as NADFAS, National Association of Decorative and Fine Arts Society has changed its name to The Arts Society. With groups mainly in the UK, but also in Spain and as far away as New Zealand and Australia, it is felt that the simpler name will be more memorable and much easier to understand. Each individual society holds a talk once a month, given by inspiring and distinguished speakers on any subject connected with the Arts. Special Interest Days, Visits and Holidays are also organised by each group. West Sussex DFAS will be known as The Arts Society - West Sussex. It is a very friendly society and this year it has had talks on a variety of subjects, from Grayson Perry to Jane Austen. The society has an exciting calendar of events planned for 2018. This includes talks on Sicillian Renaissance and how Art and Design helped the cause of the Suffragettes. There will be visits to Freemasons' Hall and the Soane Museum. To honour our charitable status and to support our local community there is also a very active 'Young Arts' section. Artists are sponsored to go into schools for specific projects, and as part of the recent Petworth Festival a PopUp Art Exhibition was organised in the United Reformed Church, involving 15 local primary schools. The work was extraordinary for children of that age - vibrant, diverse and quite brilliant. The children who came to visit were thrilled to see their work displayed. There were also three huge models of birds, one of which was seen on Springwatch Unsprung on the BBC in June. The Petworth Literary Festival in the Autumn, will offer another opportunity to involve local schools in a poetry workshop, sponsored by Young Arts at The Arts Society - West Sussex. 51 Meetings are held in Fittleworth Village Hall on the first Tuesday of each month followed by tea or coffee. Horsham Artists Open Studios Art Fair Following their highly successful Art Trail in July, the Horsham Artists Open Studios group is thrilled to announce its Art Fair which will run over the week-end of Saturday 21st October (10.00am – 5.00pm) and Sunday 22nd October (10.00am – 4.00pm) at the West Sussex County offices in Chart Way, just over the footbridge if you were walking from the Carfax up towards the station. The fair will feature the work of around sixty artists and makers including painting, fabric and wood work, jewelry and ceramics. Throughout both days there will also be a wide range of free programmed demonstrations when you will be able to see how work is created from first ideas to finished product as well as talk to the artists about their work. A full range of work will also be available to buy; an opportunity to pick up a Christmas present for someone – or for you.
