Pastoral Letter Yours, Lord, is the greatness and the power and glory and the majesty and the splendour, for everything in heaven and earth is yours. For all things come from you, and of your own do we give you. (1 Chronicles 29. 11 and 14b) Over twenty five years ago a group of Parishioners met to plan how St. Peter’s could serve the community better as a building fit for the then, Twentieth Century. They decided on certain priorities, like a loo, and other internal improvements. However, other factors impacted their plans like the prospect of having to replace the roof, which was achieved by generous giving and fund raising, and I’m sure many can remember, ‘Raise the Roof’. Recently St. Peter’s received a very generous legacy from the Knight family, who have been closely linked to the Church and the village for many years, which has enabled the dreams and aspirations of twenty five years ago to be realised. The Scripture quoted above, is part of the prayer of King David as he gives thanks to God for the generous gifts that have been set aside for the Temple in Jerusalem, a building he himself would not see completed, but would be the task of the next generation, and his own son Solomon to finish. Many of those who had the vision for the future, twenty five years ago, are no longer with us. To borrow a Salvation Army term, “They have been promoted to Glory”. Now it is our responsibility to ensure that St. Peter’s retains its role not only as a place of 5 worship and prayer, but also one that meets the needs of our local community today. It is with that sense of Thanksgiving, and trust in the Lord, that we have invited the Bishop of Horsham, The Rt. Revd. Mark Sowerby to dedicate the new works. This will take place on Sunday 14th October at our 10.30am service. Whether or not you are a regular worshiper with us, I do hope you will visit St.Peter’s, to see the work that has been done, and celebrate God’s goodness. Coffee at ‘Xpresso’ on a Friday morning during term time when we provide fair trade coffee and tea with home-made cakes, using the new servery, is a great opportunity for everyone. Link to Hope Christmas Shoebox Appeal 2018 Yes it’s that time again! Please think about filling a shoebox for the underprivileged families and elderly in Eastern Europe, In time for Christmas. They need to be ready by early November. Leaflets listing possible contents are in the back of church. The gifts you give show our love and care for families for whom gifts at Christmas are not normally a possibility. They bring so much joy at an otherwise cold dismal time for them. Prayer Prayer Group and Quiet Mornings If anyone would like to spend half an hour in fellowship and prayer then they are most welcome on a Tuesday at 4.30pm, when prayers are said for the life of the Parish. Contact Wendy Duff on 700295 for details of venue. On the third Friday of every month Quiet Mornings are held at the home of Wendy Duff at 10.30am. It is a peaceful time when you can relax, recharge your batteries and listen to music, poetry, readings and prayers. You will come away refreshed and ready to carry on! Chain of Prayer Worried about a loved one, a friend or yourself and would like prayers to be said by a chain of people? Contact Wendy 700295 or Gillian 700157 and they will start the chain by contacting the person next to them on the list and so it goes all the way round. A copy of the chain is on the notice board at the back of church. Prayer is a powerful and important part of life and one should never under estimate its effect. You don't need to give any details of the problem just ask for prayers to be said and it will happen. Please note that it will be treated with total confidentiality.

Prayers are offered for parishioners who are in special need, especially the sick and frail. Please advise either of the churchwardens of any persons or situations you would like remembered in this way. 7 All those living in particular roads are prayed for regularly, the whole parish being covered over a 12-week cycle: Week beginning:

Autumn Lecture – Friday 19th October at 7.30pm, St. Mary's Church, Petworth with Mission Aviation Fellowship. PACT is proud to present another great speaker for the autumn lecture – Keith Varney from Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF). MAF uses planes to transform the lives of the world’s most isolated people in need. Serving in more than 25 countries their planes bring hope, help and healing to thousands of isolated communities. They deliver practical help, share God’s word and help to heal the sick. They use over 130 light aircraft to deliver passengers and cargo in partnership with thousands of organisations. 24th World Scout Jamboree Hello, I’m William West, I am 14 and am an Explorer Scout from Petworth and Pulborough District Scouts. Last October I attended a selection camp and was lucky enough to get a place to go to the 24th World Scout Jamboree in West Virginia, USA in July 2019. This is a three week trip to the state and its area including 12 days at the Jamboree and another week home hospitality with a scout group from one of the host countries; America, Canada or Mexico. Part of the money I raise will help fund a scout from a less developed country to pay for some of their fee. To continue our fundraising with five other local scouts from the district, (we come from the towns and villages all around Wisborough Green) we have organised a musical evening "A PIG AND A JIG" with Willie Austin and his band playing and a hog roast at Ashington Centre, Ashington on the 19th of October. Wisborough Green Primary School News As we start another new term we are looking forward to exploring the arts. Developing musical skills, across the whole curriculum, is something we are excited about. Staff recently enjoyed a fun training session, looking at how to use rhythm to help children remember spellings, key facts and number sequences. Using the junk percussion was the highlight of the session, especially the broomsticks and dustbin drums. We are excited by the musical opportunities our children have this year and it starts with our younger children learning to play the djembe drums and our rock choir preparing for the festive celebrations in the local community. Our art focus will see us exploring clay, modroc and textiles. We are hoping to invite a local artist in to produce a collaborative piece of work, to enhance our learning space, and would love to hear from anyone who would like to share their artistic talents with us. Developing local links is really important to us and we are looking at ways we can work more closely with the Wisborough Green community this year. We like to visit the church and we are looking forward to our Harvest Celebration, Remembrance Service, the Christmas Tree Festival and Carol Concert this term. I attended the service for Education Weekend in September and thoroughly enjoyed meeting many local residents. Nature Notes The sound of crows calling is constant here in the daytime, as are the cries of buzzards, so I didn’t take any notice of them the other morning. No notice that is, until they escalated to a fever-pitch! I looked up - the buzzard’s calls were so persistent and above me was a vast crowd of birds. They were crows, and caught amongst them was the buzzard, flying to and fro in an obvious attempt to escape. It’s always very hard to judge numbers, especially high up, but there must have been a hundred or so, wheeling and darting in towards their larger less agile victim. I started calling to the buzzard – “go higher” –“ fly away for goodness sake” – “get out of this crowd!”, but it seemed weary and slow compared to its tormentors. Knowing that years ago a flock of crows brought down a heron in the fields nearby, by pecking through its eye, I feared the worst. It couldn’t escape the crows as they drove it back and forth. Just as I felt it must surely tumble down (and that my neck might give out!) – over half the crows flew off together. The thirty or so remaining went on wheeling and diving, but at last they too seemed to tire and drifted away. I managed to bring my chin back down and watched as the buzzard, probably a youngster, recovered a little and flew off over the fields behind us. Crows have destroyed their nests here in the past, but I’ve never seen a wholesale attack like that. There really was a big, big crowd of them! In complete contrast, that very evening, I took the ancient dog for his bedtime totter down the lane. There was a blanket of soft grey across the sky, and the only sound was the rustle of wind through the poplar trees opposite. It was a lovely moment of peace after a hectic day. A few good sightings this month. A house in Skiff Lane regularly hosts a pair of house martins, and this year four have fledged, with three surviving so far, and the fourth by a passing hobby! Sad, but they must eat too. A stoat has visited, and on a recent sunny 13 day they saw two grass snakes swimming round their pond. With the water level low, the larger female had to coil itself round several times to push up and out. The smaller- a male(?) eventually followed on behind. And with swifts returning, there are now three nests under the eaves of the old Forrest Stores – hooray! Our hedgehogs are doing well – the cat food is always gone, so the

next job is to choose where to put their winter quarters – as far from the road as possible I think. It’s hard to get a photo in the dark, but here’s one from a Harsfold household. This one was lying doggo - or should that be hoggo? – when the resident dog discovered it one evening! On that terrible pun I’ll leave you in peace till next month. Sue J P.S. Sadly, since writing this, our hedgehog has been run over outside our house. Can I make a plea for everyone to be aware, when driving at night, that hedgehogs are on the move looking for their winter quarters so please keep an eye open for them.

Village Care Scheme The St. Peter’s Village Care Team meets regularly and its aims are to give help and support to the residents of Wisborough Green in as many ways as possible. This includes visiting people who are housebound, in hospitals or in nursing homes, and comforting those who are suffering from illness, bereavement, loneliness etc. We also provide (through the West Sussex County Council) a free library service for those who are unable to leave their homes. See next page. Each team member is responsible for looking after an area of the village, for welcoming new arrivals, and for giving friendly advice. We produce “Welcome to Wisborough Green Cards” containing useful information which are always delivered personally. When appropriate, we send out cards on the first anniversaries of Baptism and Confirmation, and for bereavements. We are always open to suggestions and new ideas to help the community. Village Car Service The Village Car Service, a part of the St Peter’s Village Care Scheme (see above), has now been in operation for over twenty years. It provides transport to Doctor’s and Dentist’s surgeries and local hospitals on request. There is no charge for this service but donations are invited from passengers as these are ploughed back into the Team’s budget to pay petrol expenses to the volunteer drivers. The service is co-ordinated by Jennie Burr (tel:01403 700607). We have a dedicated team of drivers and are extremely grateful to them all, but always need new recruits to cover busy periods. If anyone is interested in driving for the village please contact Suzanne Mosley on 01403 700946.

St Peter’s Luncheon Club St Peter’s Luncheon Club meets six times a year, on a Thursday, in the Wisborough Green Village Hall and is open to anyone who lives in the village or who worships at St Peter's. A two -course lunch, accompanied by a glass of wine, costs £5.00, payable at the door. Members are reminded by telephone a week or so before the event. ‘St Peter’s Chain Gang’ The Churchyard at St Peter’s is an historic record of successive generations, a home for funerary monuments of architectural and aesthetic excellence, a setting for the church itself and a place for reflection and prayer. As such, its maintenance is of the highest importance. To complement the regular mowing the churchyard receives throughout the year, St Peter’s Chain Gang has been formed. This working party meets every other Tuesday in the churchyard from 9.30am to 12.00 noon to carry out routine tasks aimed at keeping everything neat and tidy. Extra help is always welcome even if you can come for just part of the time. Please bring gardening tools if you are able. REMEMBER, REMEMBER...WISBOROUGH GREEN SCHOOL BONFIRE NIGHT - FRIDAY 2ND NOVEMBER The annual Wisborough Green School Bonfire night is this year scheduled for Friday 2nd November. It is always a very popular event, and a very special part of village life. Further details of the event will be available on the village noticeboards and school Facebook page in due course, but there will be lots of amazing fireworks, refreshments, and fun, as well as the annual Build a Guy Competition of that you can be sure. Tickets will be available from the school at a reduced amount in advance of the event, or on the gate on the day. But capacity is limited, so do please buy in advance if you can. There are always opportunities to get involved with our events, and we will be producing a small event programme with some advertising space. Family Support Work News With the start of a new school year there is a great deal of buzz around FSW at the moment. Our 4 new Family Support Practitioners began work early September, so we’re delighted to welcome Phillipa (Newhaven, Lewes and Seaford); Kelly (East Grinstead); Becky (Crawley) and Stacey (Coldean) to the team. They will soon be getting to know their new areas and making contact with local churches, schools and other organisations and begin to develop our network so that we can hopefully start supporting families very soon. We are delighted to now have 11 practitioners covering a large part of Sussex – the highest we have seen for over a decade. We had a very busy summer combining a number of family activity days with fundraising events, including the Amberley-Arundel sponsored walk and the Henfield Fair. We also attended the clergy conference in Canterbury at the start of September, and were able to raise awareness of FSW throughout the Diocese. Amberley-Arundel Sponsored Walk (23 August 2018) Message from the organisers - “Well done to everyone, who came together on 23 August, in support of our annual Amberley - Arundel fundraising walk. As ever, you made the event an enjoyable day and great success, whilst raising money to sustain the valuable work our practitioners provide to families across Sussex. 43 walkers, 4 dogs and one baby completed the walk this year, alongside 11 wonderful volunteers who collectively gifted 35 hours of their time to ensure people were registered and refreshed with tea and homemade cake. Village Hall News The team met with our architect in early September and agreed most of the details for the construction drawings which should be ready by late October. We shall then ask our 4 candidate building firms to submit tenders for the projected works. We anticipate the tendering process to take a further 4 to 6 weeks. Alongside this, we have submitted a detailed paper about the project for consideration by the Big Lottery Fund which we hope will lead to a formal application for grant monies. The grant application process is quite lengthy so we are not quite sure how long this may take. We remain hopeful of a successful outcome. More next month. Messy Church Summer Special On Wednesday 22nd August Messy Church was run in the Vicarage garden. We looked at our beautiful world and learnt about how we need to care for all that God has given us. Gill led us in singing and using instruments to begin our afternoon. We made animals out of cartons to re-use them, blow painting created some wonderful trees, locally picked and sourced fruit was chopped into fruit salads to remind us to buy and use local produce. A beach scene was created and seed pictures.

Much fun was had by everyone who attended. Many thanks to all those who prepared their crafts and ran the afternoon. Our October Messy Church will be on Thursday 18th October at 3.15pm in the Village Hall.

The Wisborough Green Village Trust On the surface it might not seem the most earth-shattering of news but the fact that the Wisborough Green Village Trust is being formed is, indeed, BIG news for the village.

What is it? In previous Parish Council newsletters it has been mentioned that plans were afoot to form a Community Land Trust and volunteers were called for. A team is now in place and the formation of the CLT is underway under its chosen name. When formed, the WGVT will apply for charitable status although this is not a foregone conclusion. A CLT is a not-for-profit organisation set up to benefit a specific community. It can own land, housing and other assets, which are important to a community, with an emphasis on genuinely affordable housing. CLT’s hold and manage those assets so that they are available and affordable for future generations. A CLT is supported by members of the local community who share its vision. The WGVT steering group have agreed a mission statement: “To create the framework to acquire or develop and maintain affordable and sustainable local housing together with any other asset or service that benefits the village and community of Wisborough Green.”

Why is the Trust of benefit to WG? There are many benefits to the village, both large and small, but the main one is that the Trust, in consultation with the village, gets to set its own Housing Allocation Policy with specific regard to affordable homes within the village. 23

What should you do?

 If you, or any family member, want an affordable home in WG, register on the CDC Housing Register. The application process and eligibility criteria can be found on the CDC website (http://www.chichester.gov.uk/findingahome). Even if you think you would be Band D (refer to the CDC website for explanation), please register.  Quite soon a village Housing Needs Survey will be undertaken by Chichester District Council. Please make sure you answer the survey fully, it really will make a difference.  The Trust will be holding a public consultation on the Housing Allocation Policy of which details will be circulated in due course. Please make time to attend and offer your opinions. It is important that the whole village is behind this and your support matters.

Where will the money come from for the Trust to buy property? Initially the Trust will be funded from a mix of grants and loans.

What of the future? There are many ways the Trust can develop. It will, inevitably, start small but in time could develop to be a village driving force to ensure that: if you grew up in WG or work in the village, you can live in WG if you want to do so, or for instance, if you have a late 20-something living in your spare room who needs a home of their own, there will be an opportunity. This is some way off but we need to make a start. To do this we need your support, both now and in the future. Please REGISTER; your need is our lead to affordable housing in WG.

‘Dos, Don’ts, Moans & Groans’ My initial moan this month is a moan that I and the editor of the magazine keep on receiving comments about the tree that was removed behind Stonewall Cottage. The point that people seem to have missed was - it didn’t matter what was removed just that the scene from the village has altered because of it. We will not mention this again. My second moan this month also relates to trees, The replacement trees on the small green opposite the Cricketers have really suffered in the dry spell over June and July and, if the council are going to spend money replacing them, they should allow for watering them or plant them in the Autumn. My third moan relates to hedges along the footpaths not being cut back enough so that when they regrow there is still not enough room to walk past with a buggy. Please cut those hedges back. My only Do for this month is please, every time you see Brian Smith or Jamie Palmer, Do say how much you enjoyed the Balloon festival and hopefully it will be back on the books as an annual event. 27th ANNUAL WISBOROUGH GREEN C SEPTEMBER SUN PROVIDES THE PERFECT BACKDROP FOR WISBOROUGH GREEN CHARITY BALLOON FESTIVAL The 27th Annual Wisborough Green Balloon Festival provided a spectacular finale to the summer holidays in the village on Sunday 2 nd September. A generous helping of September sunshine provided almost perfect ballooning weather and enabled 28 hot air balloon flights to successfully take to the skies with their fundraising passengers on board. With 14 balloons taking off from the green at dawn (6am) and another 14 at dusk (6pm) the village was treated to a breath-taking spectacle as the beautiful multi coloured balloons rose against a backdrop of cloudless skies. This year the event saw more spectators than ever before flock to the Green to observe proceedings. Perfect weather conditions attracted a large crowd, which boosted fundraising efforts, and provided a truly magical and memorable experience for all.

CHARITY HOT AIR BALLOON FESTIVAL With the total raised for Chestnut Tree House Children’s House reaching almost £10,000, the organisers were absolutely delighted with the day. Jamie Palmer, who helps organise the event said, ‘With such a weather dependent event, we are always at the mercy of conditions on the day, but this weekend they could not have been better, and we feel truly blessed. We’d also like to say a huge thank you to all of the villagers who turned out to marshall and help with traffic management, making the afternoon possible’. The Wisborough Green Hot Air Balloon Festival has raised over £100,000 for charity since its inception by Brian and Cecilia Smith in 1981. It relies on the generous support of local businesses, community organisations and the local people to make it happen and continues to go from strength to strength. Organised by Airworks Worldwide and British Balloon Flights, the event is also generously supported by The Three Crowns, EP Clark, Silvester Engineering, The Cricketers Arms and Airworks Worldwide. Time For God

Time for God in September fell on Education Sunday. During the service we gave thanks for the education available to us, and all for which we are thankful, and had the opportunity to write on the prayer wall. We made little boxes to remind us that the Bible teaches us how to live well. A fig biscuit was decorated to become a mini Bible and our brains were challenged by a puzzle sheet about journeying with God. Amanda Harrison our Headteacher from Wisborough Green Primary School was able to join us to celebrate Education Sunday. The next Time For God will be on Sunday 9 th December, the beginning of the Christmas Tree Festival, due to our Dedication Service in October and the Remembrance Service in November. However Messy Church will be running in the Village Hall at 3.15pm on Thursday 18 th October for families.

 As colder weather is approaching, protect half-hardy plants with fleece or bring into a frost-free greenhouse or conservatory.  Once the first frosts have blackened Dahlia foliage, lift tubers and store in a dry frost free environment over the winter months.  Lift Begonia tubers and Gladioli corms and remove the dead foliage before storing them.  Plant daffodil, tulip and Allium bulbs for a glorious spring display.  Time to plant spring bedding such as wallflowers, Bellis, Primulas and winter pansies.  Harvest squashes and pumpkins before the first frosts.  Finish harvesting beans and peas. When beans and peas finish cropping simply cut the plant away at ground level, leaving the roots in the soil. These crops fix nitrogen which is slowly released into the soil as the roots break down  Continue planting autumn garlic and onions for a bumper earlier crop next summer.  Any plants with green tomatoes or peppers remaining can be hung upside down indoors to ripen.  Clear the straw from around the base of strawberry plants to increase ventilation. Shear back old foliage to encourage fresh new growth.  Divide congested clumps of rhubarb by digging up and splitting into several pieces with a spade. Re-plant the healthiest looking pieces.  Remove the netting from fruit cages to allow birds to catch and eat any pests that are lurking there.

Update Boxal Bridge We heard on September 3rd that the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DDCMS) decided to de-list the Boxal Bridge following a late challenge by WSCC Highways Dept. The de-listing application made by the WSCC Highways Dept included photographic and documentary evidence which had not been shared with the local community. This evidence attempted to prove that the bridge had been repaired and modified several times since 1943 (although primarily to the parapets) and therefore it could no longer be considered that “the historic fabric remains largely intact”. Their report concludes: “….the new information in the review does provide three important pieces of additional information:  the historic fabric can no longer be suggested to survive well:  the design of the bridge has clearly been altered, particularly with respect to the parapets and coping;  the date of the bridge can be more accurately judged to be around 1827. From an assessment perspective this means that one of the existing Architectural reasons 35 for listing, namely ‘the historic fabric of the bridge survives well’ can no longer be supported. In addition there is an argument to say that the level of alteration to the parapets undermines claims to architectural special interest. The refining of the date to around 1827 helps us to understand that the bridge was almost certainly constructed later than the other listed bridges in the area. Whilst it is acknowledged that most structures constructed between 1700 and 1840 are listed where a significant proportion of their original fabric survives, the loss of historic fabric and the level of alteration at Boxal Bridge mean that Historic England can no longer recommend listing, and therefore this structure should be removed from the List.” HE assessors are renowned for doing a careful job first time round....so it is puzzling why they were so easily persuaded to change their minds. De-listing is a very rare occurrence - it perhaps happens once or twice a year in a total of over 2,000+ decisions (according to DDCMS). In summary: the bridge was assessed and given a Grade II listing on 17th January 2018. WSCC put in a late challenge to the listing which has now been accepted by HE on face value without analysing the validity of the references claiming to show that the bridge structure had been substantially altered and modified since it was first constructed. The statements referred to the parapets being repaired after a number of collisions with passing traffic. The parapets do not contribute to the structural strength of the bridge. Only the arch, the abutments, the foundations and the spandrel walls form the bridge structure. The parapets are walls to prevent pedestrians and vehicles falling off the bridge. The main part of the original structure has remained intact and the reasons for delisting are not proven. It is hard to comprehend why WSCC is so determined to demolish this bridge and why they have tried to mislead HE when they should have been pleased to support the listing, which is the wish of the two Parish Councils of Wisborough Green and Kirdford . Recipe of the Month LEMON PANNA COTTA WITH BLACKBERRIES AND HONEY MADELEINES As you’ll hopefully have some locally gathered blackberries in the freezer by now, here is a delicious dessert recipe, which will use up a few more of them! I made it for a dinner party dessert as it’s quite light. The honey madeleines accompany the panna cotta so well but you could always add some other delicately-flavoured biscuits of your choice.

Ingredients (serves 6)  3 leaves of gelatine  600ml double cream  150ml milk  200g caster sugar  Zest and juice of 2 lemons  Zest of 1 lime For the madeleines  3 medium eggs  80g caster sugar  1 tbsp honey  80g plain flour for dusting  40g ground almonds  75g unsalted butter, melted plus extra for greasing tin

On the Side  200g blackberries  3 tbsp crème de cassis (optional)

Method 1. For the panna cotta, put 6 small pudding moulds (about 120ml each) on a baking tray. Soak the gelatine leaves in a bowl of very cold water and set aside. 2. Put the cream, milk and sugar into a large pan and bring slowly to the boil. When the cream is boiling, add the lemon juice and the lemon and lime zest and whisk well. Simmer for a few minutes until reduced slightly then turn off the heat. 3. Scoop the softened gelatine out of the water and squeeze off any excess water. Stir the gelatine into the hot cream, leave until just warm, then strain this into a jug. Carefully pour the mixture into the moulds and place in the fridge for at least 5 hours until completely set (overnight is ideal). 4. To make the madeleines, beat the eggs with the sugar and honey until light and airy. Whisk in the flour and ground almonds until completely incorporated then gradually whisk in the cooled, melted butter. (This batter can be made several hours in advance). 5. To bake the madeleines, heat oven to 190 C/170 C fan/gas 5. Generously butter, then flour the madeleine (or bun) tin. Spoon the batter into the tin and bake for 10-12 minutes. 6. When the madeleines are golden and baked, remove from oven and cool for 2 minutes. 7. Drizzle the blackberries with liqueur, if using. 8. To unmould the panna cottas, run the tip of a knife around the edge of each mould. Dip the mould briefly into hot water until the filling just comes away from the sides. Gently ease panna cottas away from edges of moulds and when you are confident it will turn out cleanly, reverse the mould onto a serving plate and gently lift off, releasing the contents. 9. Arrange blackberries around each panna cotta and place one or two madeleines on edge of plate. Spoon over a little of the blackberry juices and serve as soon as possible! Wisborough Green History For anyone looking up the service records for soldiers of the First World War who lost their lives the first place to look is the Commonwealth War Graves Commission web site. This is fine unless you are misled by the very basic information given on the local War Memorial. Wisborough Green has one such plaque in the church. Corporal John James Cheesman being the man in question. John was the second child of John and Elizabeth (Pullen) Cheesman. Born in Loxwood in 1890, then moving to Wisborough Green as a child. On leaving school John worked as a milkman before joining the army He enlisted in the 4th Royal Irish Dragoon Guards at Chichester on the 12th of October 1909. In 1911, at the time of the census he was at Woolwich barracks and moved to Tidworth in 1912. It was around this time that John was promoted to Corporal. On the outbreak of war the regiment moved to France as part of the British Expeditionary Force on the 16th of August 1914. Soon after arriving in France the regiment moved into Belgium and to the Mons area. The first encounter by the British Army was on the 22nd of August, Johnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s squadron, led by Captain Hornby encountered a patrol of Uhlans (a light cavalry regiment of the Royal Prussian Army). Some of the British troops were dismounted and Trooper Edward Thomas fired the first shot for the British in the First World War. Captain Hornby led the mounted troops in to attack the Germans. He killed a German trooper with his sword, the first German to be killed by the British. On the 24th of August during the retreat from Mons, with the 9th 40 Lancers on one side of the road and the 4th Royal Irish on the other they were ambushed by German cavalry. The British troops were scattered with some being cut off from their comrades. John along with Private Richard Webb from Kidderminster were two of these. On the 29th of August both were posted as missing. Finding it impossible to break through the German lines they ended up at Cugny, near St Quentin, France. They took to hiding in some woods until they were discovered by Monsieur Emil Fontaine, a local farmer who supplied them with food and clothing at considerable risk to his own safety. Early in December 1914 John and Richard were discovered by the Germans but managed to get away. After this Emil took them to his farm and hid them in a pit in his barn where they remained for the next nine months. Just before Christmas 1914 the Germans set a deadline for British soldiers to give themselves up or to be handed over to them, they were aware that there were a considerable number behind the lines. Any soldiers caught beyond this date would be regarded as spies and shot, regardless of whether they were in uniform or civilian clothing. The penalty for those harbouring British soldiers was also to be shot or if they were lucky to be imprisoned. A move John Cheeseman - centre seated to the hayloft in 1915 was followed by a move

y - John James Cheesman into Emilâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s house during the severe winter of 1916 where they remained until the 10th of February 1917. During all this time John and Richard only ventured out at night and the only people they spoke to were Emil and his wife. In early February 1917 the Germans started to build the fortifications of the Hindenburg Line so they evacuated the local population. John and Richard were going back into the woods when they, along with Emil were captured. The pair claimed to be Irish and were taken to Avesnes for Court Martial on charges of spying and were sentenced to death. It was then that they admitted to being British soldiers and the sentence was reduced to fifteen years in prison. Emil Fontaine was sentenced to ten years in prison with hard labour for harbouring the two soldiers. Both John and Richard were sent to the civil prison at Aachen and then moved to Cologne on the 22nd of April 1917 and on to Rheinbach, near Bonn, on the 25th. In August of 1917 they were moved again to a punishment camp at Cottbus, near the Polish border where they remained until the 30th of January 1918. John and Richard were split up with Richard going to a camp at Soltau on Luneburg Heath, and John going back to Rheinbach. This is where they remained until being released at the armistice on the 11th of November 1918.

It was in 1916 that the families of John and Richard received telegrams to say that with no news of the pair that they were presumed killed in action. Before their arrival home in 1919 memorials to the fallen had been erected with Richard being named on the Kidderminster War Memorial and John being named on the brass plaque in Wisborough Green Church. For his efforts in hiding the two soldiers Emil was awarded the British War Medal in bronze, ironically as so few were produced this is now worth considerably more than the silver war medal. On their return Richard was discharged from the army due to his poor health but John remained in the army being transferred to the Tank Corps until being discharged at Canterbury as unfit for further military service on the 14th of May 1921. John married Anne Edwards in 1920 and, in the 1939 register, is recorded as an agricultural labourer. John died in 1951. As a foot note to this John had two brothers who also served during the First World War. Harry served with the Royal Marine Light Infantry having joined in 1907. He then transferred into the Royal Air Force in 1918 and to the Royal Corps of Signals in 1921 until being Discharged in 1922. Reg served in the Royal Sussex Regiment, spending most of his time in India. NB Richard Bairstow will be back next month

Local Club and Society News Wisborough Green Short Mat Bowls Club Monday 3rd September was our Club Finals Day, with Club Captain Monica Enticknap taking centre stage, being on the winning team in all three finals. In the Triples Final, Monica Enticknap, Alex Herbert and Hilary Nulty beat Bernard Adsett, Linda Jones and Gavin Jones 12-7. In the Pairs Final, Monica Enticknap and Carol Herbert won 11-6 against Dave Herbert and Linda Jones. Finally in the Club Singles Final, Monica triumphed over Marilyn Knight. During the day there was a light-hearted Rinks Competition and also an entertaining game or two of Target Bowls. A superb ploughmanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s style lunch and afternoon tea was provided, which was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

On Tuesday 11th September we entertained Alfold in a friendly match, with Wisborough winning on one mat and honours shared on the other. On mat 1 Jane, George, David and Bernard (skip) won 25-9 and on mat 2 Monica, Marilyn, Shirley and Pauline (skip) drew 1818. This gave a match result of 43-27 and victory by 16 shots. On Thursday 13th September we entertained Midhurst also in a friendly match, with Wisborough winning on both mats. Seventy new officers join Sussex Police Seventy new police officers joined Sussex Police recently (10 September), the largest intake in more than ten years. The recruitment to local teams has been made possible by this year’s rise in council tax. Chief Constable Giles York said: "This intake marks a transformational moment for Sussex police as we see a significant number of new people joining our organisation. Since the £12 council tax increase from 1 April, the recruitment teams have worked hard, resulting in 140 new constables, 70 being recruited in this round, with a further 108 to start with us by the end of March 2019. The new intake is part of our drive to recruit 800 in the next four years, leading to an overall increase of 200 officers by 2022. In addition to the new police officers, this month we have 34 new PCSOs starting with us too, taking us to 215. We had planned to recruit up to our 196 PCSO strength, but have been able to increase our complement by nearly ten per cent more than we initially budgeted for.” The new round of recruitment of police officers, which sees double the usual intake, is good news for communities as they see local policing being strengthened.

Every season throws up different challenges and some of us, that are supposedly more experienced, still have questions to ask!! 47 The Horticultural and Craft Show August Bank Holiday Monday The show was a great success in the marquee – cup winners are listed on page 49 After a difficult day beforehand with all the rain it was amazing there were more entries than last year in the horticultural section – it was not an easy task to gather your exhibits in the wet! There was a good level of entries in the other sections though there were fewer in the photographic classes (however the judge did comment on the high standard). You may have been aware there was a much reduced presence of the Beekeepers but we used the space to trial selling excess vegetables and flowers. It proved to be a great success and next year we hope to hold it outside the marquee and attract more customers – it all helps to fund the show. Well done to everyone who played their part - all that effort was much appreciated by the many visitors to the tent. There was plenty of lighthearted banter all day long - the chairman was mocked for putting radicchio into a lettuce class which we all now know is a type of chicory! Thanks to everyone for a great day!

Now that is an area of demanding taste, so it should suit us. Another “new to us” venture is Adjustus V, an intriguing name for speciality designed bags locally in hand woven cotton from Kerala. Big hint about both businesses – worth googling and coming to inspect them next Market if all goes well. Test out the multi seeded flapjacks made with honey – no sugar or syrup for us. Absolutely Yummy, but you will need to find the stall!

Market Needs Another of our team has found a job that suits her apart from having to separate from the committee and the job she really enjoyed – dealing with the social media and photos. Alas none of us can take up the slack so we are in a pickle. The market needs someone who will keep us in those areas. Younger people are the future and they use it brilliantly. Would you like to extend your CV doing this for the Market? Being on our very friendly Committee can be optional. Reporting can be done by email. Our team needs someone to specialise in finding new stall holders, enable them to do the formalities to be 51 able to trade and to liaise with existing ones. WI Report We started our new year with a talk from Graham Bowring on the life of hedgehogs. If you’ve never seen a hedgehog around your garden then you’ve probably got badgers in the vicinity. Graham brought two hedgehogs, Henry and Harry, to meet us. They eventually uncurled and made sure we were ok to meet. Graham explained what to feed them on and what to look out for if they were unwell. Graham gets called out all the time to rescue unwell hedgehogs and eventually let them back into the wild. I am very pleased to announce that our Quiz Team came second in the County Quiz at Fittleworth. I think it’s the highest we’ve ever come. Well done all. For our next meeting on the 4th October we will have Bob France giving us a talk on ‘What the Butler Saw’. This is a talk that had to be deferred from March due to the weather. Weather Watch Wisborough Green rainfall in August was 71 mm ( last year 71 mm - 10 yr average 80 mm). It was good to have the rain and our lawns turn green again! The Met office prediction was a return to the warm and settled weather which at time of writing is happening but not so warm. Max temp for August was 32.2 C at Kew Gardens in London and the minimum recorded was minus 1.3 C at Braemar in Aberdeenshire. Sunshine levels were a little below average at 90%. Yet to be confirmed, the summer months (June/ July/August) were warmer than 1976 for England - over the UK as a whole it equalled that year. At time of writing, Weathervane is in Philadelphia where it has been a wetter summer than usual - yesterday over 50 mm of rain! In the USA as whole it has been warmer than usual with average night time temperatures at their highest since records began climate change deniers - hmm! Weathervane

Neighbourhood Watch - Crime News & Advice Police warning as telephone fraudsters net tens of thousands across Sussex Police are reminding Sussex residents, especially the elderly, to stay on the alert for bogus phone calls and visitors after a number of cases over the last month. In each case residents have received phone calls from someone purporting to be from their bank or from the Metropolitan Police, either saying that there were problems with their credit or debit card accounts or that they were investigating a case of fraud. In some cases, the caller has claimed to come from Barclays Bank asking if the victim banks with them. When this is confirmed, they are asked to phone customer service with the number on the rear of their card, but the phone is not disconnected, a second person 'answers' and the victim is fooled into believing that they are talking to their bank, being persuaded to reveal PIN verification and other details and ultimately handing over their bank cards to a false courier. Thousands of pounds have been withdrawn in Worthing, Shoreham and Hove recently. A similar fraud is carried out by a caller claiming to be from the Met Police, most often a PC Anthony Reynolds from Hammersmith police station. He persuades the victim to visit their bank, withdraw large sums of cash, which are then placed in a carrier bag for collection in order to be paid into a 'secure' account. Sadly, the victims have little hope of seeing their money, often a significant portion of their savings, again. The most common type of fraud affecting older residents in Sussex is “advance fee” fraud, where fraudsters persuade victims to make advance or upfront payments for goods or financial gains that do not then materialise. Beware of anyone asking for money in advance. For example, fraudsters may claim that you are entitled to PPI compensation or that you are to inherit money from a relative, but you need to pay 55 legal or administrative fees first. Genuine firms don’t ask for this, it is likely to be a scam. If you’ve already been a fraud victim, beware that fraudsters may pretend to be lawyers or police claiming they can help recover your money. To protect yourself:    

Be sceptical of callers, even those who claim to be officials. Don’t be afraid to put the phone down with a brief ‘No, thank you’. NEVER give personal information, such as your date of birth or bank details, to unexpected callers. NEVER allow an unexpected caller to talk you through processes on your computer, like downloading new software or accessing your online bank account.  Remember that the police or your bank would NEVER unexpectedly call you and ask you to withdraw cash or move your money to another account, as a result of fraud or any other reason.  If callers suggest you call your local police or bank to check who they are, use another phone or ensure the line has been fully disconnected by phoning a friend or relative first, or by waiting at least 3 minutes, otherwise you may think you’ve phoned a number, but you’re simply talking to the fraudsters again. This is a common fraudsters’ tactic.  If a caller asks you to type your bank PIN number into your telephone handset - do not do this, as fraudsters can use technology to identify the numbers. If you have information about any crime call 101, email: 101@sussex.pnn.police.uk or call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. If you see a crime taking place call 999.
