Pastoral Letter Luke Chapter 10, verse 2 “And Jesus said to them, ‘The harvest is plentiful, but the labourers are few. Therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the Harvest to send out labourers into his harvest.’” As we look forward to our Harvest Thanksgiving at the end of September (please see separate article about Harvest Supper), when we recognise our dependence on God’s provision for our needs, it is worth reflecting on the importance of prayer in our relationship with our Creator God. The Archbishop of Canterbury has, along with many other Christian leaders across the land, called for a period of prayer over the weekend of the 23rd - 25th September. This national prayer weekend has a strapline that runs ‘Local people praying for their neighbourhood can transform the nation. One life, one street, one community at a time.’ Justin Welby encourages the National Prayer Weekend by stating, ‘When we have a Church that prays and is reconciled and reconciling, and that tells people confidently about Jesus, then the dawn will break, hope with rise, our countries will be transformed and the empty threats of economies and terrorists will be utterly and finally overthrown.’ Here at St. Peter’s, which is open every day for prayer and reflection, we will be offering a number of prayer stations to provoke and encourage us into a deeper relationship with God. This is going to be a guided meditation that will be available to do on your own or with a friend. A written guide will be produced and you can follow each station, pausing, reflecting and praying at each point. For some people it may be helpful to light a candle as a visible sign of prayer offered. This is available throughout the year. There is also a ‘prayer net’ situated on the font where one can write a prayer request on a paper fish that will be offered and prayed for confidentially every Tuesday afternoon at the Parish Prayer Meeting. I do hope that as many of you as possible will make use of the opportunity to use St. Peter’s in this way, as we seek to see the ‘Harvest gathered in’. For more information, please contact us at The Vicarage. Prayerfully yours, Clive and Marion

A visit from Sarah St Peter's Prayer Group has written to and supported an Indian pastor, Rev Koti Paradshi for many years. He and his family live in a very poor part of Southern India. His wife Elizabeth is a midwife and they run the 'Mighty Fortress Orphanage' as well as running a church and ministering to the area. It was a wonderful surprise earlier in the year to hear that his niece is living and working in Luton, having completed her Masters degree in Pharmaceuticals. Sarah visited us on 14th August and was welcomed to the 'Time for God' service in church, to the Vicarage picnic and to a Garden Tea party in Carters Way. Sarah brought each member of the Prayer Group beautiful saris – and taught us how to put them on and wear them elegantly!! (Always high heels!) This caused much laughter – but we are determined to wear these glorious garments again. Sarah loved being with us all – and we are sure she will be coming again to share the joys of Wisborough Green. Judy M

Ben-Hur is the epic story of Judah BenHur (Jack Huston), a prince falsely accused of treason by his adopted brother Messala (Toby Kebbell), an officer in the Roman army. Stripped of his title, separated from his family and the woman he loves (Nazanin Boniadi), Judah is forced into slavery. After years at sea, Judah returns to his homeland to seek revenge, but finds redemption. Based on Lew Wallace’s timeless novel, Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ, the film also stars Morgan Freeman and Rodrigo Santoro.

Nature Notes About 20 of us gathered in the Three Crowns on Friday 12 August for a most informative and entertaining talk on bats by Jane Willmott from the Sussex Wildlife Trust. Bats are the only warm blooded mammals in the world that can actually fly. They have elongated and widely separated fingers and also an extra long tail, and the wings spread out across the fingers and right down to that tail. The difference in size between the resting body and when it’s flying is amazing. Tiny ‘mice’ turn into impressive small ‘aeroplanes’, twisting and darting as they chase the insects they feed on. A bat can eat about 2,000 midges on a good night in summer! And Jane had brought a tiny pipistrelle and a larger serotine from a rescue centre for us to see. They seemed unfazed, although we did see the strong thumbs at work as one clambered out of sight into a nest of old towels. Fascinating creatures - let’s hope they recover and get back into the wild. We took a stroll as dusk fell, clutching bat detectors in our eager hands. These pick up Serotine bat in flight taken by Hugh the high frequency calls as echo location Clark, BCT (Bat Conservation Trust) helps them hunt. It was so heartening to hear bats calling, right by the pond, close to the village centre. We then went up Harsfold Lane. There was an almost constant stream of chatter, from several different species, coming from the detectors. We stopped at the little bridge, and could then see them too, flitting over the water. A really delightful evening, all courtesy of Jane and our newly-formed wildlife group organised by Mike and Jill. So - many thanks all round! On the bird front, several interesting reports. Peter saw a young cuckoo flying behind West Dean college! Apparently some do stay as late as September before setting off. There are some big groups of swallows about, and some house martins attracted the attention of a hobby in Plaistow last week. We’ve had a green woodpecker in the garden, a pair of bullfinches, the first for ages, smartly chased off by our resident blackbirds, and several big groups of starlings passing through again, via the feeders! A friend was walking by a clear chalk stream alongside a small lane behind Cocking village. He came across a marvellous gathering of birds – corn buntings, willow warblers, house sparrows - and greenfinches, one of which hopped into the shallow water for a bath. And as he watched, all the others gradually followed suit - about 20 birds all bathing together. What a delight! Maybe Cocking water has something special to offer? Further on up this lane is the Heyshott Nature reserve – an old quarry that has a host of varied orchids in spring, and many unusual plants and butterflies over the summer months. Definitely a mustsee area for 2017! And finally - Last month I thought some bees were a cowpat – this morning I thought this fungus might be a rare bird’s special nest! Time for new glasses?? Parishes Wildlife Group Twenty four people attended the meeting held at the Three Crowns pub in Wisborough Green on Friday 12 August to hear about bats.....and a further 18 had to be turned away on account of the space available and the number of bat detectors. Jane Willmott from the Sussex Bat Group talked about their life cycle. At this time of year young bats born earlier in the year and suckled by their mothers are starting to fly. This can lead to accidents and cats provide a threat to young bats as well as older ones. Bats declined rapidly in the UK in response to the use of wood preservatives and insecticides. All 20 UK species are legally protected and bat workers like Jane need to obtain licenses from Natural England, the statutory government body which informs government about wildlife. Jane had brought along two types of bat from the "bat hospital" to show the audience a Serotine and a Pipistrelle, our smallest and most common species. At dusk, Jane handed out detectors so we could hear the sounds made by the bats. After a safety briefing we walked out and round the pond where we m ostly heard soprano pipistrelles and then we crossed the A272 and headed down the track towards Harsfold. We saw some shooting stars, two glow worms and over the RIver Kird found at least 3 different bats - some different Pipistrelles and a member of The Pipistrelle bat in flight taken by Frank Greenaway who the Myotis family. Sussex bat group keeps a undertook bat projects in Sussex note about all species recorded in the county and the Bat Conservation Trust based In London does research, produces leaflets and ensures that everyone is kept up to date on how bats are doing. Thanks to Jane for a great evening and we plan to put on another similar event in 2017 as bats will soon be hibernating. Jill Sutcliffe, 01403 700395, Parishes Wildlife Group

Village ‘Moans & Groans’ Page August - what a month we have had - fantastic weather and FANTASTIC Olympics. What a result for Great Britain perhaps this is a sign that "Brit Exit" will not be as bad as we have all been told it will be - we are certainly showing the rest of Europe how to win in sport. Again a Moan from me - still only two moans coming in this month so obviously we are all happy with everything in the village? email me on kenvickery@hotmail.co.uk. It is good to see the Churchyard, Village Hall and Pond area looking tidy and used for weddings in the last month. Most of the hedges around the village have now been cut but there are still a couple that could do with a trim. DOG fouling on and around the green and down the New Pound road continue to be a problem. If you have a DOG or DOGS under your control please pick up and dispose correctly DON'T leave it for people to tread in. If you see somebody leaving it please ask them to pick it up. The two moans that I have had this month are one concerning the ever problematic parking around the village on junctions and in the roads of the estate especially a BIG white van that seems to park on any junction that it can find free in the estate, Please remember it will only take a couple of minutes to walk from a sensible parking spot and this may save somebody’s life or prevent an accident. The other moan is about the amount of Wood Pigeons that are around at the moment and it has been suggested that if nothing is done soon it will become a major problem. More and more seem to be coming and nesting in gardens. Is this because we feed them and nobody shoots and eats them anymore? Rooks and Crows also seem to be an ever increasing population. I did see six Buzzards flying in the sky above the green in the middle of August perhaps they will help. Isobel has asked me this month why vans and cars have to park on the pavement in front of the village shop I am sure that this is not village people but if you see stupid parking please tell the person parking what you think don't walk by. I did ask a Taxi driver to move his car from the Cricks junction and as soon as I asked and pointed out the yellow lines he was off so please mention it to people you see parking on the junctions. Ken V

Minibus Theatre Trip Saturday 22nd October (4.00pm matinee performance) at

The Mill Studio, Yvonne Arnaud Theatre, Guildford We shall be taking the Minibus to this performance of

‘Stevie’ by Hugh Whitemore Stevie Smith commutes to the West End to her work as a secretary at a publishing company. Her evenings are spent at home with her beloved aunt a world of Battenberg cake, gossip, ginger nuts and sherry in tiny glasses. But at the same time as leading this seemingly mundane suburban existence, she is writing the piercing poetry and prose that will one day make her famous. Stevie is a biographical snapshot of both the poet and the private woman. Shot through with wit, this is the story of an endearing heroine, her unconventional life, powerful and popular poetry and her greatest struggle: to keep waving and not drowning. ‘………….this is a highly ingenious piece, slipping seamlessly between poetry and dialogue to create a vivid impression of both the poet and the private woman.’ (The Telegraph) Directed by: Richard Parish with: Karen Brooks, Marie Thurbon and David Hemsley-Brown Tickets for the performance are £15.00 and the Minibus fare will be £5.00 Please ring: RICHARD PARISH (700628) as soon as possible to book both your ticket and your seat on the bus 21

Recipe of the Month

YUM YUM I met a lady who was trying to discover who had made a delicious cake that she had tasted at a tea party. The cake had been left over after a church event. She described the cake, and I said I recognised it (I think) as one of Anne’s. So I hope the lady is reading this and I hope this is the cake recipe she is looking for!! Hilary Edmonds Base  3 oz margarine  6 oz self raising flour  2½ oz castor sugar  ½ tsp full vanilla essence  2 egg yolks Topping  1 cup of walnuts (chopped)  1 cup of cherries (chopped)  4 oz castor sugar  2 egg whites (whipped stiff) Tin 11” x 7” Method 1. Mix all base ingredients to crumbs and spread in greased tin and press down. 2. Mix egg whites and castor sugar to make meringue - then fold in walnuts and cherries. Spread over base. 3. Wisborough Green History - WISBOROUG Gerald Andrews was a wartime evacuee who, at the age of six, was billeted with Mr and Mrs Skinner at 6 Upfield Villas in Durbans Road. This is his account of coming to the village after being evacuated, along with around 100 other children, from his family home in Peckham in September 1939.

Living in the country. I was six years of age when the day came for us to be evacuated. Mum and Gran McGee took us and our luggage to Peckham Rye railway station to commence our journey to the countryside. Andy (my brother) and I not knowing where. We got on a bus to the station, I still remember the number of the route, and it was a single deck bus number 243. There seemed to be hundreds of us swarming around the station, we were met by a teacher, had a label put in our lapel, then Mum and Gran took us to the platform with our luggage and gas masks in a little box strung across our shoulders. We boarded an electric train, (I believe Southern Railway was the only electric railway in England at the time). Our suitcases were put on board and we never saw them again until we got to our foster parents. Mum must have been very brave because I cannot remember her crying; only telling Andy to look after me and keep hold of me. The organisation that went into the evacuation of all the children from London must have been something special. I didn't hear of anyone getting lost or being left behind. The train did not stop until we got to a place called Billingshurst which is in West Sussex. We all piled off and were lined up in the shunting yard of the station. We were then put on buses for our destination called Wisborough Green. I did not know at the time that I had a cousin Peter McGee on the train with us; he was shipped of to a village named Kirdford. We were taken to Wisborough Green School by bus; the school was a one storey building with only four classrooms. The school we had just left at Whorton Road Peckham you could have got lost in it without any trouble. We were shepherded into two very small playgrounds which had apple and pear trees in them which were laden with fruit for about half an hour. Some of us had never seen an apple tree before. Andy and I waited in line for our turn to be allocated a home. At last it was our (Continued on page 31)

turn, it was getting dark outside. We stood in front of a desk. "We will send these two to Skinners" and a gentleman took us to his car and off we went down a road passing a couple of farms and a row of houses. We stopped at the last house on the right just before you go down a hill. We got out and he took us to the front door. I can remember it as if it was yesterday. A plump lady answered the door, she had a lovely smile. "Hello Mrs Skinner I have two German prisoners for you". She looked down at us and said "We asked for two little girls but you had better come in". 6 Upfield Villas was a lovely house. We were taken into the dining/living room. It was warm and smelt nice, there was a glowing fire in a range; a big armchair to the left and a coal scuttle to the right of the range. In the centre of the room there was a table with four chairs. In front of the window there was a small table with a telephone on it. The number of the telephone was Wisborough Green 91. The house also had electric light. It was a lot posher than what we had just left. We were shown around our new home. The stairs went up the middle of the house just like the one we had just left. The ground floor consisted of a lounge at the front of the house which was only used on Sundays or special occasions. The dining/living room was the other side of the stairs and the scullery was through a door of the living room. We were taken upstairs to the first floor and shown our bedroom, which was above the lounge and at the front of the house. It was nicely furnished with a double bed, a wardrobe and a washstand and a bowl and jug on it. This was the first time Andy and I had a room of our own. Mr and Mrs Skinner slept in the room opposite, which gave access to another set of stairs; these stairs took you up to two more rooms, which were used as storerooms. Back down stairs we go through the living room and into the scullery. Here we have a copper in the corner for washing the clothes just like home. It was also used for heating the bath water, there was no bathroom. A bath was taken on a Friday night in front of the fire in the living room; this I remember was very nice. Next to the copper was a stone sink with a pump over it. (Stephen, my son, has this pump over his fish pond today.) The only way to get water was to pump it up from a well which was in next door's garden; the water had a very distinctive taste to it. There were two doors in the room, one led to a very large walk in pantry (no fridges in those days); the other door took you outside into the garden, where we are now going, and we looked into a big shed which stored logs and coal. Around the back of this shed was the toilet, this was a bucket under a seat. When the bucket got full Mr Skinner had to dig a hole in the garden and empty it. This was very strange to us as we had a flush toilet. There was no light in the toilet. After our tour we returned to the dining room and Mrs Skinner gave Andy a piece of paper and said he should write a note home and let Mum and Dad know where we were but Mum had already taken care of that by giving Andy a postcard already addressed and stamped. After Andy had written a few words on the card Mrs Skinner took us to the corner of the garden where there was a post box in the hedge. The post box is still there today. (The photo shows Gerald in Wisborough looking very grownup! Continued next month) Richard B. 31

The Gardener’s Calendar

by Ian Clemens

 Continue to feed and dead-head your hanging baskets and container plants, they will often keep going until the first frosts.  Start to divide herbaceous perennials as the weather cools.  Plant spring-flowering bulbs such as daffodils, crocus and hyacinths now.  Keep dead-heading your Penstemons, Dahlias and Roses to prolong flowering.  Cut off the foliage of maincrop potatoes at ground level 3 weeks before lifting them to prevent blight spores infecting the tubers as you lift them. This will also help to firm the skins of the potatoes improving their storage qualities.  Keep feeding and watering French and runner beans to make the most of them. When beans and peas finish cropping simply cut the plant away at ground level, leaving the roots in the soil. These crops fix nitrogen which is slowly released into the soil as the roots break down.  Start planting overwinter onions and garlic, including elephant garlic, for early crops the following year.  Cover your brassicas with netting to prevent birds making a meal out of them.  Pot up strawberry runners to make extra plants for next year. Plant out any rooted runners of strawberries for a good crop next year.  Mow long grass under fruit trees to make it easier to spot windfall fruits.  Look out for rotting fruits on your pear, apple and plum trees. Pick them off as they will spread disease if left on the tree.  Take hardwood cuttings to increase your stock of currants, gooseberries & figs.

Affordable Housing in the Village – Action Needed Wisborough Green’s Neighbourhood Plan was adopted by Chichester District Council on 19th July 2016. It will now be used by the Parish Council, local authorities and developers to offer guidance on how the community wishes future development to look and fit into the village over the next 15 years. Our Plan has identified sites for 68 residential dwellings, some of which will be provided as affordable homes, available for rent or shared-ownership. It is the community’s wish that these affordable homes are made available to village people. If you are interested in a rented or shared ownership property in the village, do ensure that your details are listed on the Housing Register held by Chichester District Council. More information can be found at www.chichester.gov.uk or by calling 01243 534734. Wisborough Green Parish Council 35

Neighbourhood Watch - Crime News & Advice Fraudsters Selling Non-Existent Drones Online shopping websites are being utilised by fraudsters to advertise nonexistent drones of various specifications for competitive prices. Drones are personal flying devices that often carry cameras and can be navigated remotely by smartphones or hand-held controllers. Fraudsters are capitalising on their recent popularity and advertising non-existent drones at a lower value than their recommended retail price to tempt buyers. After victims agree to purchase the drone, the fraudsters request payment to be paid via bank transfer saying that it will quicken the delivery process. After transferring the money the buyers never receive the drone and the fraudster blocks the victim to prevent further conversation.

How to protect yourself:  Check the validity of the post.  Avoid paying by bank transfer and instead use an online payment option such as PayPal, which helps to protect you.  Check feedback online by searching the associated phone numbers or email addresses of the seller. Feedback will give you useful information about recent transactions other buyers may have made.  If the item is below market value consider whether this is an opportunity too good to be true.

Advance Fee Fraud (Courier) People selling their items on online platforms are falling victim to a new type of advance fee fraud. This involves a fraudster, posing as a buyer, sending an email to the seller (victim), agreeing to the full asking price of the item. They state that they are unable to collect the item themselves and will arrange for a courier to pick it up instead. The fraudster then sends a fake payment confirmation email from a different email address, one which falsely purports to be from a payment platform. In the course of the email exchange, the seller/victim is requested to pay the courier fee. Once the payment is made the contact is broken, the item is not picked up and the money paid for the ‘courier’ is gone. Example of the most recent emails received by the victim/seller, from the ‘Buyer’, read: “I want you to consider this a deal as i am willing to pay your full asking price! i actually want to buy it for a family member who is urgently in need of it, i have checked through your posting and i'm fully satisfied with it. Unfortunately, i would not be able to come personally to view/collect, i work offshore as an instructor on a oil rig so i dont have time at all, but like i said i am 100% OK with the advert”

Protect Yourself:  Be wary when buyers wish to purchase items at the full asking price without viewing them.  Check the validity of the payment receipt confirmation  Avoid paying an advanced fee if you are a seller; should you choose to use a courier, arrange your own. (Continued on page 41)

Wisborough Green FARMERS MARKETplus News

Next Market - Thursday 8th September 2016 Wisborough Green Village Hall 9am – 12.30pm

The July Special Market was a resounding success. August was a normal summer holiday period Market with extra new interesting stalls. Did you know that the Market is a great place for shopping, chatting, meeting and having a coffee? All the Market's profits after running costs go to Village and local good causes. Did you know that the Market is run on a totally voluntary basis by three people with help from other volunteers on an availability basis? BUT more help is needed Can you spare an hour or so once every month or two to help with putting up tables for the Market and clearing them away afterwards? The tables are put up on the evening at 6.30 pm before the Market in the Village Hall and then cleared away after the Market on Thursday at 12.30 pm. Choose when it suits you best. Please give a little of your time to help a great community asset. Doing it this way is an easy way to contribute to keep this Village event going that has been running and contributing to the Village for fourteen years. Three permanent committee members just are not enough to cover all the jobs! Please volunteer or join the committee. Saturday 1 October 10.30am - Autumn Plant Sale Monday 3rd October 8pm Talk by Geoff Ace on “Planning your Planting” The Great August Show results will be published in Ad Vincula in the October issue when we can catch the copy date. At the time of writing and publishing this the Show still has to come. Many thanks to everyone setting up the Show inside the marquee, judging and stewarding this. Above all many thanks to everyone providing the entries. Without you there would be no Show. It takes will power to enter an item. Much easier to say mine is as good as that. Special thanks for the first time entrants. Think on for next year. Many thanks to the thirty six people who staffed the marquee, without whom also there could be no Show. The dismantling of tables and clearing up inside the marquee is quite a job at the end of a busy day. Thank you very much. We have to be quick off the mark after the Show to start setting aside plants and sundries for the Autumn Plant Sale on 1st October on the Little Green (Millennium (sundial) Green) at 10.30 am. Similarly be quick to catch that retired expert horticulturalist Geoff Ace from Merrist Wood, near Guildford on 3rd October at 8pm speaking on “Planning Your Planting”. Merrist Wood is world renowned for its horticultural training. It has had many successes at RHS Chelsea and Hampton Court Flower Shows, so Geoff knows a thing or two. He is a speaker that is invited back; Geoff is here for the first time. RIGHT: One of Merrist Wood’s students displaying her Gold Medal for exhibit design at the Chelsea Flower Show

The Table Top Competition starts again. It accompanies the evening talks and AGM and will be the same every time: “From your own garden or allotment five flowering (preferably) or evergreen stems displayed to best effect.” The points awarded each month are cumulative. The winner will be announced at the June Show. Happy gardening and garden visiting, Aija Hamilton 43

Allotments Fish and Chips Evening The allotmenteers held a fish and chips evening on June 20th at the allotments. It was a great get-together and hopefully it will become an annual event. Phil M 44

Wealden Trefoil Guild During the past few months we have attended mainly outdoor events. In June some of our members joined others from the many County Guilds at our annual ‘Brandy Hole Day’ which is a charity fund raising day when members all get together for the day to socialise and have a wonderful tea, all to raise funds for a designated charity. Later that month we helped at the Billingshurst Show by assisting with the Brownies and Rainbows stalls for the afternoon. In July we held our meeting at a Guild member’s home and had a great picnic tea and a walk in the countryside around Fittleworth. The weather was very kind to us and we had a wonderful evening. A couple of days later it was the County outing to Amberley Museum. This was a great day, with continued good weather which gave us the opportunity to see the various exhibits around the large site at Amberley. We also helped out at the District games evening when the Rainbows, Brownies and Guides all joined together playing various games to challenge their abilities, followed by a lovely picnic. A very successful, if very hot, evening. Then at the end of the month we helped supervise activities at a County Guiding Games event, when over 250 Rainbows, Brownies and Guides spent the day at Bognor Arena taking part in a wide variety of games and activities. Everyone went home very tired but having had a fantastic day. In August we had a relaxing craft evening at one of our member’s homes, making bead broaches and enjoying tea and cake! Our September meeting will be back at our usual meeting place of St Mary’s Rooms in Billingshurst. As you can see we have a wide and varied programme throughout the year and do our best to help Girlguiding around the District and County continue to give our girls wonderful opportunities, so if you feel that this is something you might be interested in you are always welcome to come and join us – please contact our Chairman Mrs Ruth Isaacs (01403 785402) Teri Maher

WI Report As there was not an ‘official’ WI Meeting in August this report is going to be very minimal but no less informative! A group of us went on the 2nd August to Chichester Festival Theatre to see Half a Sixpence. It was a lovely evening and the Show was excellent although I’m still waiting for Tommy Steele to appear. Mary managed to find her original show catalogue from 1968 to prove that he was definitely in it! Eight members attended the Quiz at Fittleworth on the 9 th August, one team of which did rather well (I’d rather not say which team I was in!). Our September meeting on the 1st is a talk from a local retired Farm Manager, John Nash. He used to manage Costrong Nurseries at Plaistow and I’m sure he will be very entertaining. Lowest temperature was 0.5°C at Altnaharra, Sutherland and the highest was 35.2°C at St Helier, Jersey. Sunshine levels in England was 90% of the 1981-2010 mean, but much duller in Scotland. CYBER TIPS - two for the price of one this month Are you securely linked? Scammers are continually trying new ways to take control of our computers. You can make sure you have a secure link to a website in three ways:

 Check that there’s a padlock symbol in the browser window frame, which appears when you attempt to log in or register. Be sure the padlock is not on the page itself – if it is, this will probably indicate a fraudulent site.

 Check that the web address begins with ‘https://’. The ‘s’ stands for ‘secure’.  If you’re using the latest version of your browser, the address bar or the name of the site owner will turn green.

Don’t be green – see green! Did I really want to read this? I received a forwarded email recently with a thread of previous messages beneath. The sender had decided to use a totally unrelated previous email with the list of addressees he wanted to send to. I am now aware of something I really did not want to know! I had started to read the superfluous text before realising that it was not at all appropriate for me.

That cat should have stayed firmly in the bag! Peter Edmonds
