Pastoral Letter “The angel said to the women, do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; He has risen, just as He said.” Matthew 28:5-6 We say a lot, don’t we – talk, talk, talk! Words, spoken and written, fill our daily lives. Radio, press, TV, the internet are all alive with opinions, views, comments, some more harsh than others, about every matter under the sun (or should that be ‘under the Son’). During this month we will hear a lot from politicians about their manifesto promises and political undertakings if elected. Yet, one man, spoke words that have been promoted, argued, discussed and criticised for centuries, which are still as relevant today as they were two thousand years ago. Furthermore, He kept His promises; now, that is unusual! Those women who went to the tomb early that first Easter morning, to anoint the body of Jesus for his burial, probably had not thought how they were going to move the stone or placate the Roman soldiers guarding the tomb, but just had to go. They were in for the biggest surprise of their lives, as Saint Matthew records in his gospel. The crucified Christ of Good Friday had become the resurrected Lord for all, in the past, the present and the future. For Jesus kept his promise to His friends, and to all who follow Him now. It is a promise that encourages us to tell others about the amazing power of His resurrection and the love He has for all creation. “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:19-20. Have a Happy Easter. Clive and Marion Jenkins

From the Editor Welcome to the April edition of Ad Vincula. When I started writing this, I was sitting by the pool in our hotel in Barbados sipping a cold rum and coke. As I finish writing, I am back in the cold and that’s NO JOKE! Being April, there may be one or two spoof articles this month! Let me know if you spot them. Another packed edition this month. In addition to the usual articles, this month we have a reminder about the threat to Boxal Bridge (below), fantastic news from KKWG on the oil/gas exploration planning appeal (p13), articles on the wonderful work done by the Winston’s Wish charity (p15) and Weald School Rugby successes. Finally a bit about the National Plant Monitoring Scheme (p33) which will, for the first time, enable scientists to take an annual stock take of the UK’s wild plants and their habitats, but to do this they need the public’s help. They are looking for volunteers to carry out surveys of wildflowers and their habitats. Go to their website for more details. As always, I would love to hear from you with any comments or suggestions. Best wishes, Roland Zilz The magazine can also be viewed on line at: http://www.wisboroughgreenparishchurch.org.uk/index.php/parish-magazine

DON’T FORGET - SAVE BOXAL BRIDGE! As reported last month, West Sussex County Council (WSCC) Highways Department is considering demolishing our local Boxal Bridge despite opposition from both Wisborough Green and Kirdford Parish Councils and local residents. The bridge is listed as a Chichester District Council (CDC) heritage asset and it is named as a community asset in the Kirdford Neighbourhood Plan adopted in 2014. However these distinctions give the bridge no statutory protection. Apart from the historical and community value of the bridge, there is the safety aspect concerning both the bridge and its approach. The bridge does need approaching with caution. If the bridge is replaced by a structure that can accommodate two cars then drivers will accelerate and this could result in an increasing number of accidents. So please sign the current petition to stop the demolition of Boxal Bridge and explore ALL the options in a public and transparent debate of the full WSCC committee. Link to the petition to save Boxal Bridge: http://epetition.westsussex.public-i.tv/epetition_core/view/boxalbridge Only sign if you live, work or study in West Sussex and use that postcode. It will run until 6th May so please pass it on to friends, family and neighbours. For further information please contact Katy Fletcher fletcher.katy@googlemail.com 9

Nature Notes The news this month is mainly of an amphibious nature. I’m sorry – I know you’ve heard me going on about them before! But I love them. For many years now our pond has been sadly frogspawn-free. So when a friend complained that her small pond was bursting with it, we got lucky! She brought us half a bucketful, and we gently eased some into our pond, and then took the rest over to Carters field and slipped it in the pond there. Now I’m out every morning looking to see if the ‘pimples’ on the surface are changing at all. Did they survive the move? Will they hatch? I’ll keep you posted. No sooner had I settled that lot in, than I got a call about the pond at Ingrams –bursting with toads! We had a meeting about the drilling that night, (n.b. hooray!) and when we came out, in the yard and along most of the bottom track, were toads of all sizes, some already paired up, barring our way. Two of us took on the job of moving each of them to safety, adding ten minutes to everyone’s journey home! They muttered at us as we lifted them, and sadly a few had already been squashed, but at least thirty were saved that night, plus several newts. We went back next day to take some pictures of the pond. Ours were hopeless, so thank you Mark Howarth for the two shown here! Only two days later almost all had gone. Away from pond life, there is an adult barn owl hunting near the allotments. It’s been quartering the fields, so maybe there’s a mate sitting on eggs nearby. We’re still waiting for the box in Fishers field to be occupied. Some jackdaws used it last year, but I live in hope of seeing a white ghost skimming along by the stream at sunset. Red kites are often over the Downs now, and a peregrine’s been seen at Bedham. The wild daffodils are bursting into colour, primroses and celandines too and there’s a lovely bank of violets behind the Pulborough car park. And I had a fantasy moment the other day. I discovered two very pale lilac snowdrops in a white clump! The stems all looked the same, and they drooped their heads a little too. I planned my genus name for posterity – “Jamsonia” had a nice ring to it, I thought. An hour or so later, as the sun came out, so did they, obviously crocuses. Glad I didn’t tell anyone! We’re seeing bumble bees and honeybees, the odd red Admiral, and various moths are already resting overnight on our rendered walls. And the sad stump of the oak tree that was lost in the storms has sprouted delicate fronds of chickweed, so Nature’s hard at work again - and hooray for Spring! And, of course - hooray for NO drilling! The nightingales will come back to the Copse, and badgers, bats, dormice et al can live in peace. Huge thanks to everyone who supported the campaign. Wisborough Green Primary School News It’s Red Nose Day here in school as I write this month’s letter and I thought you might like a snapshot of one of our more unusual charity days... The children made their faces funny for money, so parents rose to the challenge and we had a fantastic selection of weird and wonderful designs to admire! In exchange for decorating their face and hair, the children donated £1. In addition to this the staff decided to take over the weekly raffle and turn it into… …the Wisborough Green staff Comic Relief ‘Bake Off!’ The children were delighted to see an array of cakes, and it was clear that we have some very talented bakers in our midst! Our very own ‘Mary Berry’ and ‘Paul Hollywood’ judged the cakes in the afternoon and decided that Mrs Swan was our ‘Star Baker.’ It was great that we had 13 cake raffle winners too; the children were so excited and delighted to take home cakes for the weekend! The finale to the day was the Superheroes/Wear Something Red’ disco, the proceeds of which also will be donated to Comic Relief by the PTA, We hope to have our grand total very soon. Charitable donation is just a small part of what we do in school. The PTA continues to work incredibly hard to raise much needed additional funds for the children and alongside this we always try to support local charities as much as we can. The Snowdrop Trust has received over £500 from generous donations from parents at the school in recent months. This is a super busy, super short term and as always we have packed so much into it. Our Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 went to Brinsbury to see the farm animals. They were so thrilled to see lambs being born. The farmer could not have been more helpful and the children returned to school absolutely desperate to share everything they had learnt. The quality of independent writing after this visit was outstanding, with even children from Reception writing sentences and remembering their capital letters and full stops. I presented several gold certificates for excellent writing as a result. Year 3 and 4 will be off to the Science Museum in Winchester this term to support their learning further. They will visit the planetarium and workshops to test their scientific knowledge. Our Year 6 children have been practising their Maths, Reading and Writing skills by sitting mock tests, ready for the end of Key Stage tests in May. Each year all Year 6 children have to sit tests, which last around 45 minutes to show what they can do independently. Children have a mental calculation test and two papers for Maths, and 12

Wisborough Green Primary School News (Cont) a reading comprehension test and spelling, punctuation and grammar test for English. Alongside this we complete our own teacher assessment which gives us a very clear, rounded picture of each child’s ability in these subjects. Some of our children will have the opportunity to sit the Level 6 tests which, if they pass, will show they are working roughly at the same level as a 15 year old. We were very pleased that some of our mathematicians in Year 6 last year achieved this standard! Oh and one last thing, we are very pleased that our playground markings are about to be completed…photos to follow! Kind regards, Trudy Emberson, Headteacher

Oil/Gas Exploration - KKWG Latest News On Wednesday March 11th, we learned that Celtique Energie had thrown in the towel and pulled out of both sites they proposed to drill exploratory wells for Oil/Gas namely at Fernhurst in the South Downs National Park and on land to the south of Boxal Bridge on the borders of the Parishes of Kirdford and Wisborough Green which lies some 500m outside the SDNP. In their press release Celtique Energie said that it would not lodge an appeal against the refusal of planning permission by the South Downs National Park Authority (SDNPA) to drill an exploration well near Fernhurst, W Sussex. The firm has also decided to withdraw the appeal against West Sussex County Council’s (WSCC) decision to refuse planning permission for the drilling of a single exploration well between Wisborough Green and Kirdford. Their press release refers to the constraints applying to their license (PEDL 234) and the timing of the Public Inquiry but these don’t stand up to scrutiny. They do not refer to falling oil prices, the strength of our arguments nor to the determined opposition mounted by local residents. If this application had been successful it would have led to industrialisation of this area. As John Buchanan said at the meeting held by the SDNP to decide on the Fernhurst application, if we did need this resource – and this is questionable - we would not start in one of the most beautiful, least disturbed parts of England. THANK YOU to all of you who have helped to bring about this retreat. Celtique Energie press release: http://www.celtiqueenergie.com/article.php?id=57 Jill Sutcliffe, Chair KKWG, 01403 700395 13

Winston’s Wish in West Sussex Winston’s Wish is the leading childhood bereavement charity in the UK, helping children and young people rebuild their lives after the death of their mum, dad, brother or sister, and enabling them to face the future with confidence and hope. In West Sussex, Winston’s Wish run a unique bereavement support program called SWITCH. The program is aimed at children aged 8-14 who have suffered a close family bereavement which is having a negative effect on their behaviour. The bereavement may not be recent but may still be having an impact on the child. The SWITCH program offers family work, individual work for children and their carers and group work. We end the program with a celebration day. The aim of SWITCH is to provide children and families with the opportunity to work through their experience with qualified professionals and to help them make sense of their emotions and feelings, meet other people in similar situations and provide them with coping strategy to help them reach their full potential. SWITCH has been running in West Sussex now for two years and feedback from both children and their carers has been very positive. Feedback from a mother after the SWITCH program: “She’s like a different girl. I can’t explain it – it’s like she has grown up. She’s excellent. I think being able to talk about her feelings and listen to the others and what they do when they get one on them has really helped her. She still gets grumpy, but now takes herself off to her room and listens to music and when she’s calmer, then I go and talk to her!” We would like to reach as many of these children and families as possible in West Sussex. If you, or you know a child or family who, would benefit from the SWITCH program or would like any further information, please contact: Sheila Elliott, Family Program Lead for SWITCH: selliott@winstonswish.org.uk or switch@winstonswish.org.uk or phone the office on 01403 211030 and ask to speak to myself or a member of the SWITCH team. Winston Wish in West Sussex also offer a family support service for those families who may not fit into the SWITCH program. You can contact them via our helpline on 08452 0304 05 Monday to Friday 9am - 5pm, plus Wednesday evenings 7pm to 9.30pm. Winston’s Wish also run a Drop-in session which takes place on the last Thursday of each month: 2.30 - 5.30pm at the Westgate Leisure Centre in Chichester. Annual UNLOCK Walk - 25th April 2015 A party of walkers from St Peter's started going on the London walks in 1987. Some of us are still walking 28 years later - although maybe rather decrepit now!! They have always been days of fun - even in snow one year and a deluge another!! We have learnt so much about different parts of London and different churches on our walks – and although we walk 8 or 9 miles we stop at several churches en route. And nearly every church supplies coffee and cake (never as good as Xpresso cake, though!). One year 3 walkers had a full English breakfast – much to the despair of their wives!! Who are these gorgeous men? Think we’re lost.

We have realised how the desperately poor parts of London have improved and seen the work of Unlock in areas of poverty and sadness. We went to Tottenham the year after the terrible riots that killed a policeman. It was a joy to see how the multiracial community had come together to celebrate each other and bring the love of Christ into homes that were angry and hurt. Every year we have been accompanied by Bishop Peter Hall, his wife and gorgeous black labrador. Sadly Bishop Peter died last year – so this year is a commemoration of his life – walking in his patch of ministry – Lewisham, Deptford and Bermondsey. Peter had a passion for the powerless poor and a clear view that we need to see and address peoples 'sinned against'.

If you can join us do let Judy know on 01403 700700. Please, please sponsor and pray for our UNLOCK walk in London. Judy Moorey

DELIDAHLIAS There was an article in The Times recently about Dahlias returning to the dinner table! Apparently the taste resembles a cross between carrot, celery, potato, asparagus and fennel(!!) The concept is not new, but has been out of fashion for a couple of centuries as gardeners concentrated on cultivating the blooms. Lubera, a Swiss producer, will soon be selling these Delidahlias in the UK. Please don’t contact us for a recipe! PM 17

Open Gardens Weekend 2015 Saturday 6th & Sunday 7th June 2015 Following on from previous successes, this year the popular Open Gardens event will be combined with Flower and Music Celebrations in the church on the weekend of 6th and 7th June. Whilst many of the admired gardens will be on show once again, we are looking to provide a variety with the introduction of some new gardens, either large or small, to be on show. You may not think that your own garden is worthy of this but it is not necessarily the perfect show garden that attracts all the interest. If you enjoy gardening, live within the village boundary and would like the opportunity to discuss ideas with other gardeners, then why not open your garden on this special weekend. For further details please contact: Annie Daniell on 01403 752846 or Email: daniellgunshot@gmail.com (LINKS Committee)

WG Primary School Parent Teacher Association Get set for summer! Exciting plans are being drawn up for a new style Summer Festival for Wisborough Green Primary School’s annual event. Instead of finishing at its traditional mid-afternoon time, the idea is that the event will run later, into the early evening, and take on more of a family music festival feel. Families will be able to rent a hay bale table, settle down to enjoy a picnic tea and kick off the shoes to listen to some live music. With the festival finishing at 7pm, everyone can have a fun-filled day and still be home for bedtime. Two County Rugby Finals for The Weald School Wednesday 4 March marked an important day in the history of Weald School rugby, as for only the second time in 35 years, two of the school’s rugby teams qualified for the County finals. The Weald only enter their teams of U14 and above into the competitions each year and the most recent victory means that the school has now won 4 county titles in the past 3 seasons in different age groups. The two teams that qualified for the finals, which were held at Brighton rugby club, were the Under 15s and the Under 16s. The older of the two sides, made up of Year 11 students, were reigning County champions after winning the title last year, and this year had opponents in the shape of Hurstpierpoint College in the final, a school with an excellent rugby tradition. The Weald started well and took the lead in the early minutes but that didn’t last long though, as Hurst came back strongly and scored two tries in quick succession to go 10-5 into the lead. The game finished 17-13 to Hurst and despite losing, The Weald can be proud of their achievements in another excellent season. That left The Weald’s Under 15 side as the sole hope for a title for The Billingshurstbased School. They also came up against strong opponents in The Forest School from Horsham. Again the Weald started well but Forest came back strongly and went in to half time with a well-deserved 7-5 lead. The Weald came out with a new sense of purpose in the second half and began to take more of a control of the game finally winning 27-7. An excellent game in which the scoreline could have been much closer. For large parts Forest had the Weald pinned back in their own territory and the eventual winners were made to work incredibly hard for the result. This particular Weald side will go on though and look to make it three trophies out of three next season, after winning the Sussex State School Cup last year.

Teams: U16s: Page, Warzee, Higgins, Preston, Aurhammer, joels, Crucsiel (c), Payne, Brazier, Williams, Macrae, Haynes, Mahon, Blackbee, Deng, Colbran, Treasure, Jillians, Geddes, Cole U15s: Witham, Mcpherson, Heasman, Burchfield, Gee, Lloyd, Linfield, Aurhammer, Worsfold, Greenfield, Rolfe, Snelling, Wright (c), Johnson, Powell, Goodchild, Edgar, Jeffries, Hartley, Holcombe

Peter Woodman, Head, The Weald School comments: I recently had the pleasure of attending the Sussex County Rugby finals. The Weald was the only school in West Sussex that had two teams playing in the finals. Our U15 team won and were presented with their shield at our main Friday assembly, with over 1,000 students present. I was able to remind students why sport is so important. We play most sports for enjoyment, but also for competition. Winning is great, but on many occasions we lose. Learning to lose is an important part of life. Playing in a supportive team is a good way to learn how to lose gracefully and with dignity. It is from losing that we learn how to do better next time. So congratulations to our Year 10s for winning, but also to our Year 11s for being runners up, and indeed all other students that have taken the risk of playing for a team so far this year, unsure of whether they will win or lose. Whilst it is great to win, I know the vast majority of our students gain great enjoyment through playing with their peers and representing their school.

An invitation to all electors to attend the

Wisborough Green History - GLASSM The most significant person in glass making in Elizabethan England and who initially established his trade in Wisborough Green and the nearby Wealden villages of Loxwood and Alfold was Jean Carré. In last month's issue, I described his working life and how his glass making flourished from 1567 onwards. He died on 27th May 1572 and his death is recorded as 'John Tarry. Mr. of the Glashouse was buried at Awfolde' in the Wisborough Green parish records. However, he is believed to have been buried in the churchyard of St Nicholas Church in Alfold even though no gravestone was erected. In 1924, the church organist placed a slab of Sussex marble on the presumed grave, detailing it as Carré’s. (NB Jean Carré's name was sometimes anglicised and parts of Alfold were in Wisborough Green parish up to 1884.) French and Huguenot refugees continued to work in the Wealden area long past Carré's death, as our parish records contain at least 26 entries of French families in the area, from 1567 to 1617. The entries then stop rather abruptly partly because the Lorrainers left the district after arson and threats of murder and also due to the result of James I's Royal Proclamation in 1615 that prohibited the burning of wood for glassmaking, as wood was considered more important for other uses, e.g. shipbuilding. As the industry began to utilise other fuels the Hennezels and other Lorrainers relocated to areas where coal was accessible especially Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Stourbridge in the West Midlands, where they anglicised their name to Henzey and later Ensell. Some of these details are taken from the Heritage and Culture section of Surrey County Council's website. There are other locations about which little is really known. Some time ago the owner of Malham Ashfold in Drungewick Lane unearthed the remains of an old glass furnace site together with numerous pieces of glass. This was probably connected with Fernefold glass house that was very close by. There is still a house at Bedham named Glass House where glass has also been discovered and at other notable glass-making sites. There was a furnace in Glass House copse, another at Skiff Corner and another on Sweephurst Farm. A number of place names still survive to remind us of the furnaces, such as "Glasshouse", "Glasshouse Field", "Sandpit Copse", and possibly "The Kiln" although this may refer to the brick making industry that was carried on locally. The 13th century lancet window in the vestry of Kirdford Church has five half quarries (panes) of leaded local window glass - see the included photo, next page. The window there was reglazed c1970 by Mr. Cladwell, glazier to Canterbury Cathedral, with some 150 fragments very rare white and coloured medieval glass made in local furnaces during the 14th to the 16th centuries and which were collected by G. Hugh Kenyon in 1933, a local historian and author of "The Glass Industry in the Weald" published in 1967. The bulk of the fragments, including the cobalt blue, came from Malham Ashfold. The large piece of ruby glass in the centre came from Hogwood and was possibly made by Schuterre's heirs who were important glass makers in the 14th and 15th centuries and who probably supplied the glass for Winchester College and New College, Oxford. Finally, a couple of related local items. The Sussex County Magazine for May, 1939 30

MAKING IN THE WEALD (Concluded) has a description with a photograph, of a small glass unguent bottle found complete on a glass furnace site at Brooklands Farm, Wisborough Green. The accompanying note states that it was probably discarded for two reasons: first, two sides were unduly pressed in and second, the neck had been fixed on with a twist which almost blocked up the opening. But small as it is, and somewhat misshapen, it is apparently the only vessel of any sort ever found on one of the 41 recorded Surrey / Sussex glasshouse sites. This bottle can be seen in Haslemere museum. (NB Unguent bottles were used for containing medicines, oils or ointments and their manufacture and usage goes back to Roman times.) The passageway between Grene Cottage and White Chestnuts was excavated c1970 in order to mend a burst water main. A coin was found about eighteen inches below the surface. It was caked in clay and was at first thought to be an old halfpenny. However, after it was cleaned, it was seen to be a fairly thin metal disc with letters and symbols stamped on both sides and it was taken to a museum for identification. The verdict was that this was a pressed metal jeton (also known as a token or a counter) made by Bans Krauwinckel in c1600 and used for gaming or counting. Tokens or counters were issued by various traders in the 15th and 16th centuries, especially in mainland Europe, and were often given to poorer people in lieu of cash for payment. When they wished to exchange the tokens for goods or cash they set out their tokens on a long board called a counting board that was ruled off into sections in which the different denominations were marked. The traders or money ex-changers stood behind these boards and could therefore see at a glance the value of the tokens offered by the buyer and thus how much could be bought. Nowadays we still buy goods across a "counter". Hans Krauwinckel was a Continental trader, and it is quite possible that the token may have been brought over by one of the glassmakers who lived in the village. Richard B. 31

Wisborough Green Short Mat Bowls Club After a quiet period through January and early February we are back into playing matches again. Firstly we entertained a strong Arundel side, unfortunately losing on both mats in a very competitive match, with their league experience making the difference. Jane Adsett, David Luxford, Bernard Adsett and Monica Enticknap going down 12 - 21 on mat 1 and Pauline Shipway, Joan Goodchild, Marilyn Knight and Reg Snelgar losing 12- 22 on mat 2. We then entertained Fittleworth in a 'grudge match' again disappointingly losing on both mats. Jane Adsett, Shirley Bundy, David Luxford and Monica Enticknap losing 17 - 28 on mat 1 and Evelyn Ringrose, Joan Goodchild, Marilyn Knight and Reg Snelgar going down 16 - 22 on mat 2. We now have a busy period of matches coming up, so hopefully we can get back on the winning track. The Wisborough Green Short Mat Bowls Club meets in the Village Hall on a Monday afternoon from 2:30 to 4:30pm and Wednesday evening from 7:00 to 9:00pm for practice otherwise known as a 'roll up'. We are a friendly club who, apart from the weekly roll ups, also play occasional friendly matches. New members of all ages always welcome. Wisborough Green Horticultural Society No Talk or Meeting on 6 April This is not a delayed April Fool's joke but it would have been on Easter Bank Holiday Monday, so we brought it on earlier to 30th March. The AGM on 2nd March was well attended and all the business was dealt with. Chief allotmenteer, dahlia grower and shower for more years than we can remember. Reg Snelgar was made a Life Member together with his wife Pam who has exhibited and helped with advice at the same time. Reg was dubbed Sir Reginald Snelgar with the help of a yellow headed new mop or was it a yellow feather duster? A mystery to me whence it came but Reg and the audience were very tickled and chuckled away. We are sad that Kate Steele stood down from the committee but she will still carry on organising the Summer Outing on Wednesday 17th June to Hinton Ampner House and Garden. A very varied garden indeed. We are delighted that Tom Christopherson joined the committee. He has exhibited for a long time and helped us with the August Show, so is already clued up. The existing committee was voted in and we set about out traditional gardening and local knowledge quiz immediately. The group winners were Ann Beasley, Gaenor Circus, Shirley Dean-Webster and Wendy Duff with a score of 34 out of 50. The surprise question was to name all the members of the Parish Council (9), which has been a tremendous support over the years. URGENT. The Spring Plant Sale is on 9th May. This is one of main ways to fund raise to pay for the Marquee and the running of both Shows and all their associated expenses. If you are sowing in boxes or trays please put in some extras to pass on to the sale. We could sell loads of bean plants, leeks, tomatoes especially outdoor ones, herbs: actually ALL vegetables! Plants whether divided or grown on in pots are very popular, especially when we know what they are. Labels help in all cases. House plants sell out as well. It is surprising how well someone's garage clear out gardening stuff sells. So please help to keep the Show financed and help yourselves by buying from the sale. Our prices are much lower than in a garden centre and we do get very interesting plants and varieties because we have very interested gardeners in our Society who choose very special ones. If you are new to WG or have never been to this sale come and enjoy a browse and a coffee and cake and meet up with keen gardeners exchange questions, ideas and help with what likes what and how to grow that, if you are an unsure new gardener. The sale is open to everybody. PS If you need seed trays or small pots for cuttings and growing on please contact me and I will source them for you. My phone number is in Ad Vincula under Farmers and Village Market at the back. Enjoy the Spring. Aija Hamilton 39

Wealden Trefoil Guild We welcomed a student from the Weald School to our meeting at the beginning of March who gave us a wonderful presentation on her school trip to Kenya the previous summer. She had joined 50 of her fellow members of the sixth form to travel to a special project aimed at helping to build school class rooms. These are very much needed by the young children in that part of Kenya and the Weald School has been supporting this particular project for a number of years. All the students had to raise enough funds to allow them to participate in the trip, which covered a three week period at the beginning of the summer holidays. Our Guild had given a donation to help with this fund-raising. During the term prior to the trip all the students had to gain some proficiency with their brick laying skills! As well as helping to build the class rooms they taught English to the children, played football and other games with them, as well as a great deal of dancing and singing, which was much enjoyed by everyone. When the work was done the Weald students were able to relax and were taken on a trip to Elephant Mountain and on a Safari. The speaker at our meeting on 7th April is our guiding County Archivist and she will be speaking about our guiding history. Visitors and new members are always welcome to join us – please contact our Chairman Mrs Jackie Sharp (01403 784490). Teri Maher

WI Report On Thursday the 5th March, Jane Todd, a Community Fund Raiser, came to give us a talk with computer pictures of the work that Chestnut Tree House does for children from Sussex with lifeshortening illnesses. The hospice provides support for the whole family with respite care and sibling support. There is also a team of Community Nurses providing care and support in families’ own homes. The hospice needs over £3,000,000 a year in order to provide all the facilities and care, no mean feat as they only get 8% of their funds from Government and the rest is down to fund raising. Suzanne Skillin will be the member who is going to represent us at a Garden Party at Buckingham Palace in June to celebrate the WI’s Centenary. We will all learn about Foraging for Food at our next meeting on the 2 nd April. Sue Nicholls 01403 700827 Mary Benson (President) 01403 700284 41

Weather Watch Wisborough Green Rainfall for February was 69mm (last year 198mm – 7 yr average is 77mm). Wettest place in the UK was at Cluannie Inn, Wester Ross recording 246mm – the driest at Chillingham Castle, Northumberland with 11mm. Luckily the record-breaking cold and snowy weather in NE America never reached us. So far we have been lucky to have no snow in WG. Highest temp for the UK in January was 15.6C at Fyvie Castle, Aberdeenshire. The lowest February temperature was recorded at Bewcastle, Cumbria minus 10.9°C. A sunny February - 111% of normal levels for the UK. At time of writing our editor is currently in sunny and warm Barbados – a lovely 25°C. Good for him - the rest of us can dream! And that was night-time temp!! (Ed) Weathervane

CYBER TIPS I’m not joking! April is the time for jokes, spoofs, scams et al. Scams, particularly, are getting more and more sophisticated. Remember the ancient adage – “If it seems to be too good to be true, it probably is.” It is also worth noting that these scams are only coming your way because other people respond to them. The scammers are too switched on to pursue projects that don’t work. Contribute to the scammers’ disappointment. Peter Edmonds

Wisborough Greenfingers Tips  Give your garden a treat. Notice those places where it is shady and get a bright plant. Planting now will give it a fine start to establish itself before the foliage thickens and the sunshine food supply is reduced.  Pulmonarias are very forgiving. Jack Frost with patterned leaves and pale blue blossoms and Blue Ensign with its green leaves but startling blue flowers make a big impact.  Geraniums (cranesbills) are great ground cover plants. There are loads of varieties. The Dusky Cranesbill – Geranium phaenum Lily Lovel – is particularly tolerant. Small dark violet flowers with pale “eyes” stand above the clumping foliage and shimmer.
