Pastoral Letter What do a sustaining breakfast, a comfort blanket and a sign-post all have in common? If you are anything like me, you might be thinking; ‘Not a lot!’ Answer: they are all metaphors to assist primary school children in understanding how the Bible can help Christians. Here’s another question: how do typical 9 and 10 year olds explain the Miracles of Jesus? Answer: He used magic of course, everyone knows that! I was recently asked to step in and teach these unfamiliar RE topics when a colleague retired at the primary school where I teach French and Spanish. I had to become very familiar, very quickly, with Christian approaches to the Bible and The Miracles of Jesus. I read, I googled, I listened. I found out more and I was surprised to like what I found. I was amazed to discover a strong energy breathing great life into my RE lessons. My energy and passion captivated my classes. This mystical man Jesus from the past had come into my life right now - his energy and passion were flowing through me as I taught. God seems to have a wry sense of humour. Before I could begin to teach the final part of Jesus’ story - Easter - I was again asked to cover an absent colleague. This time I was stepping back into my familiar shoes as an MFL specialist teacher. No matter, by then I was hooked anyway. One day I said a simple prayer that I found in one of the little booklets that I had used to research Jesus and his Miracles, and became a Christian myself very simply at home. The essential elements of that prayer were thank you, sorry and please. The booklet came from a man called Nicky Gumbel, who runs Alpha courses. Living as a new Christian is both exciting and overwhelming. I quickly realised I needed a bit of help. We have no Vicar at the moment in Wisborough Green, as you may know, so I rang Helen, the next best thing. The rest is history: Alpha 2014. I’m very much finding my way, and I do not have many answers, but I do know this: praying works. You can do it anywhere, anytime; just do it, and mean it. Christians believe that God hears each prayer, even if he can’t act on it as you want, or expect, or in the time frame you are planning. It seems to me that God loves us, but he can’t touch us or hold us. Instead, he gives us his words in the Bible to comfort, sustain and guide us. Perhaps God will speak to you as you read the following; it is taken from ‘The Message – The Bible in Contemporary Language’ by Eugene H. Peterson. Jesus is talking to a Samaritan woman at a well. This is what he says to her: “It’s who you are and the way you live that count before God. Your worship must engage your spirit in the pursuit of truth. That’s the kind of people the Father is out looking for: those who are simply and honestly themselves before him in their worship. God is sheer being itself – Spirit. Those who worship him must do it out of their very being, their spirits, their true selves, in adoration.” John Chapter 4, verses 23-24. What could be more comforting and sustaining than that? Church Notices NEW HOUSE GROUP STARTING

Thursday evenings 7.30 – 9.00 pm, starting 11th September, at No.2 Glebe Way, Wisborough Green, RH14 0EA. The content to study has not yet been decided. We may take the Church House course “Pilgrim” or “Freedom in Christ” discipleship course or perhaps revise our knowledge of one of the Gospels. If you have a title or course to suggest, then Helen or Doris would be pleased to hear from you. We study, we discuss, and we learn, in a friendly atmosphere and everyone will receive a warm welcome. Starting on September 11th for the duration of the study course we choose. For further information please contact Helen 700567 or Doris 700606.

CHAIN OF PRAYER Worried about a loved one, a friend or yourself and would like prayers to be said by a chain of people? Contact Wendy 700295 or Gillian 700157 and they will start the chain by contacting the person next to them on the list and so it goes all the way round. A copy of the chain is on the notice board at the back of church. Prayer is a powerful and important part of life and one should never under estimate its effect. You don't need to give any details of the problem just ask for prayers to be said and it will happen. Please note that it will be treated with total confidentiality.

VILLAGE CAR SCHEME If you, or anyone you know of, needs transport to get to a hospital, dentist or doctor's appointment please contact Jennie Burr on 700607 who will arrange for someone to drive you there. More drivers are still needed to help with this service. If you can spare half a day a month, please contact Jennie Burr on 700607. Thank you.

PASTORAL CARE DURING THE INTERREGNUM It is important for the Parish to be aware that during the interregnum there is still pastoral support for those who need it. Members of the Healing Group, Village Care Team, Prayer Groups and Social Development Team have come together under one umbrella to work as one, providing prayer and care where required. Communication and co-operation is crucial for this to work effectively, so if you hear of anyone who is in need of a Vicar, is ill, coming out of hospital, lonely, moving into the village or just in need of some kind words or prayers, please call Gillian Gough on 700157 and she will contact the relevant person.

St Peter’s Luncheon Club Guest Fund St Peter’s Luncheon Club is open to all residents of Wisborough Green. We have heard that there are those who feel unable to join us for financial reasons. We have great joy in announcing that our regular members have agreed to start a Guest Fund to ensure that we can include everybody. Please don’t be shy, if you would like to come, ring Hilary on 700623. Our next lunch is on 18th September in the Village Hall.

St Peter’s Website Those of you who have started to make use of our Church website will have noticed a glitch during June. An unforeseen event on Monday 23 June caused the website to go offline and, worse, caused all the data to be erased - on both the main discs and the backup disc! (More information on the website.) Happily, the website is now back in operation but we will be taking the lessons learnt from this to mitigate such an event happening again. 7

From the Editor It is very gratifying to read letters such as below - we must be getting something right! Anyway, welcome to the August edition of Ad Vincula. In addition to the usual articles, in this month’s crammed edition, we have the little poem on the fete below, reports on Family Support Work (p12), Teddy Bears Weekend (p13) & the WGHS trip to Selbourne (p15), a Parish Council Update about aircraft noise (p19), a tribute to Roger Moorey (p21) and details of the Bank Holiday events (p24-25) to mention just a few. I hope you find the magazine interesting and useful and, as usual, I would love to hear from you with any comments or suggestions. The magazine can also be viewed on line at: http://www.wisboroughgreenparishchurch.org.uk/index.php/parish-magazine

Letters to the Editor Can I just say what a joy & pleasure it is to read your Parish Magazine. Every month it is a witness of the real community spirit that exists in W. Green. As someone who worked in Wisborough Green for 8 years as Scheme Manager of Wyatt House I enjoyed being part of the village community and miss this within my neighbouring much larger village. Sadly we no longer have a parish magazine & thus a vital tool of communication has been lost. I do hope you continue to produce your excellent magazine and I thank you for all the time & effort that you must give to producing it. With best wishes, Hazel Barnes

Nature Notes This afternoon I was wandering in the garden, enjoying the peace and the sunshine, when I was startled by a sudden loud flurry of noise behind a nearby hedge. Fearing some kind of bird attack by one of our cats, I walked quickly round and came upon a group of starlings on the feeder. The volume and ferocity of the protests by the ones who were being denied the seeds was quite amazing. They took no notice of me and just went on shouting at each other as they fluttered around trying to get to the food. I left them to it, and continued my wandering, only too delighted that they seem to have returned here in such large numbers. They are definitely amongst my favourites – such characters. As we walk in the garden, and in the fields locally, it’s a further delight to see so many butterflies around. As many experts have said, the population has really bounced back this year. Red admirals, peacocks, commas and orange tips have all been very visible, and the fields have been full of meadow browns and speckled woods. What a welcome change from last year, when they were so thin on the ground. And in the air. (sorry, couldn’t resist!). Dragonflies and damselflies are also here in good numbers, and just today I’ve seen about eight grasshoppers flicking about in the grasses. Also, down at Arundel on the waterways there, we hear that water voles are doing well. They are such engaging little creatures, that’s wonderful news. They’ve been really struggling to survive. Slightly less wonderful is the fact that the deer who use our driveway as part of their route into the woods have eaten all the buds off the lovely fragrant old rose bush out there – for the third time this year! It flowers all through the summer, so it’ll have to be a stake-out between the deer and me if we’re to see any blooms at all! Meanwhile, the wild hedgerows are full of pink briar roses peeping out between the brambles. Wild bramble patches are marvellous mini nature reserves. Bees, butterflies, almost all flying insects, love the bramble flowers, and the prickly stems can be a haven for small nesting birds. The larger predators won’t risk getting caught up on the prickles and being unable to reverse out again. Most of the garden birds have had their families now, and we’re almost at the end of the halcyon time when you can stand beside a feeder and watch a baby bluetit feeding, just at arms length, or from a few yards away see a young red-headed woodpecker as it finds its way into a peanut. All too soon, and quite rightly, they learn to fear us, so it’s a short-lived privilege, but rather joyous. PS: They’ve just finished patching up the tarmac round here, and in our lane grass is already pushing up through the ‘patches’ in several places. Hard to beat, is Mother Nature! ! Sue J 11

WHAT DOES PRAYER FOR HEALING MEAN? Prayer for Healing does not guarantee a “Lazarus” scenario, but God knows where to meet us at our point of need and our team is present to bring your prayers to Him. Needs will be very different for each one of us, and the readiness to listen and feel the Healing touch of God is open to all, if we but put our trust in Him. Healing Prayer is offered for many needs: reconciliation, friendship, forgiveness, sickness and so often for the needs of each other. Confidentiality is absolutely assured; please do come to us during the giving and receiving of the Eucharist at the 10.30 am Service every 1st and 3rd Sunday of the month when, in addition to your own prayers, you may ask a member of the team for further intercessions. You may prefer a period of calm and silent prayer with us. Our Chichester Diocese authorises and encourages The Healing Ministry in Parish Churches, and we are led by The Venerable Philip Jones, Archdeacon of Lewes. St. Peter’s team members are Gillian Gough, Richard Pinkham, Hilary Edmonds, Doris Smallwood, Suzanne Mosely, Colly Akers and Victoria Smallwood. Our acceptance in understanding offered Prayers for Healing is to know that through Jesus’s Love for every one of us, it is His desire to make us whole. “Health is a dynamic state of well-being of the individual and society, of physical, mental, spiritual, economic, political and social well-being with each other, with the material environment and with God” Doris Smallwood

Family Support Work For many years St Peter's Church and the village have supported the work of the Chichester Diocesan Family Support Work. Next year FSW is 125 years old and the committee has been asked to shout about the work the organisation has done over the past years. Starting with the Victorians, through the Edwardians and the new Elizabethans FSW has been helping the families of Sussex. Sadly the need is as great now as it was all those years ago. So we have been called upon to ensure that FSW is around to make a difference to the quality of life for families in Sussex over the next 125 years. We are hoping that many of us will think of ways (it doesn't matter how small) to raise the profile and to raise funds. This all begins with an abseil down the cliffs at Peacehaven on September 20th, which I hope to do (Terror!!). It would be great if you could sponsor me. Meanwhile please put on 'thinking caps' to think of less stressful ways of raising funds. Judy Moorey 01403 700700 12

IF YOU HAD GONE UP TO THE CHURCH THAT DAY… ….you’d have been sure of a great surprise, because quite a large number of bears had gathered there for a drink and a sticky bun. There were large-sized Daddy Bears, medium -sized Mummy Bears and many small-sized Baby Bears. Oh yes! and more than a handful of Climbing Bears too. Whilst the daddy, mummy and baby bears sat very quietly and listened to Revd Panda Bear, preaching from the pulpit, the Climbing Bears climbed - and ran - and laughed - and ate - but, eventually, when they were just a little bit tired, they sat with the daddy, mummy and baby bears, like really well behaved children, to have a picture taken before it was time to leave. Now, just as they were leaving, who should arrive but a party of Granny Bears from Wyatt House! The Granny Bears laughed and ate but I don’t think that they did very much running and climbing even though they would have liked to! So they left that for another time. This all happened at XPRESSO on Friday 4th July as the first part of a fund raising weekend for the Chichester Diocese charity FSW, Family Support Work. FSW has worked with vulnerable families across Sussex since 1890 through many activities including home visits, support groups, one-to-one meetings, drop-ins as well as supported breaks with their community workers. On Sunday morning, members of the congregation brought their Teddy Bears to church where they heard former Wisborough Green vicar, David Pike, liken the love and care that we pour on our Teddies to the love that God has for all of us. There was more cake and coffee after the service! A huge thank you to every one who contributed with cakes, their presence or their presents. We raised £390 – “FANTASTICK!” said Pooh, who was strangely absent. Peter Edmonds with “Squash”

Vera Richardson The family of Mrs Vera Richardson would like to express their sincere thanks to the people of Wisborough Green for their many kind messages of sympathy following her sad death in June at the age of 92. Sue Killingbeck 13

Visit to G White's House and Garden, Selbourne Wednesday 25th June The weather was perfect for our WGHS annual outing. After a scenic ride following the A272 and the Downs into Hampshire and only one hour journey from home, we arrived at Selbourne at the “Wakes”, the home of Britain's first naturalist Gilbert White (1720 – 1793). He wrote his famous book “The Natural History of Selbourne” after years of patient and meticulous observation. It is said that this book is one of four books continually in print since original publication. The others are the Bible, the works of Shakespeare and John Bunyan's “Pilgrims Progress”. White is regarded as our first ecologist, shaping our attitude to respect for Nature. A present day eminent naturalist, Richard Mabey, who wrote White's biography, said: “ …. Gilbert White often arranges his sentences' structure to echo the physical style of a bird's flight”. White was the first person to note that swifts mated on the wing. He worked out that earthworms were great “promoters of vegetation”. Gilbert White was a curate and a naturalist so he would have allowed the garden to be “natural” as well as economical to keep. He did create the Zig Zag path through the steeply sloping woods to the very top of the Chalk slope to the view point above. The garden is 30 acres in size. Some of our keen gardeners noted that the roses had not been dead headed and wild flowers had been planted among the roses and perennials. There were large groups of “steepling hollyhocks” of every possible shade. I quote from a poem I learned as a child. The very first part of the visit was the short introductory talk and we were eager to explore the house with GW's study and bedchamber and the Antarctic Gallery, but we were even more eager to visit the Tea Parlour for coffee and cake. The house is unusual because it houses two museums, GW's and Scott's Antarctic with Captain Oates’ memorabilia – lots to see and marvel at. Oates was in charge of the horses on the expedition. The noise of Antarctic winds howled around. We walked through the village with its interesting cottages down to the church of St Mary's, very ancient and of similar age to St Peter's. At the side of the path leading to the church was a really ancient Yew, estimated to be 1,400 years old. Sadly a large part of the top was blown off in 1990. The hollowed trunk must have been filled with soil as there were fragrant honeysuckle planted in this. The perfume was delicious. I last visited Selbourne when I was ten when I climbed up the Zig Zag path to the very top! Time stopped me from doing this again but it is on my wish list of things to do. We got home in good time for the Fish and Chip van. With thanks from us all to Kate Steele for organising this outing. Carol Holt 15

Wisborough Green Primary School News We are rapidly approaching the end of term and end of academic year. What a year we have had! As I write this letter, in the middle of the final full week, we have now held sports day, celebrated our Achievement Assembly and the end of year productions are about to be performed. This is always a busy time but more especially as we are trying to operate as normal under quite difficult circumstances. This has been a challenging year for the school. The building is still not finished but we are confident that it will be ready for September. We are moving year groups around so that the classrooms follow in a logical way. Our current Year One children will be the first group to move into the new building and are very much looking forward to it. They are most excited about having their own toilets I think! Whilst the building work has taken place, this has had a significant effect on the school. We struggle to find places to store things as it is, but with a whole section of the school out of use, it has been difficult to say the least. We are all very much looking forward to putting everything back in its place. The children were very disappointed that we weren’t able to use the swimming pool, especially as it’s been so warm! Unfortunately, without a proper path to the pool, it was very difficult to gain safe access so we had to make the difficult decision not to use it. We are very much hoping for good weather when we return to school in September so that we can use the pool until half term! The building is looking fantastic and it will give us much needed additional space. We will have an extra group room and of course purpose built changing rooms. In addition to this, much work is needed to improve the school environment and there are plans in place to address this as soon as possible. The whole school is due to be re-carpeted and new blinds have been installed. It looks fresh, more modern and very much like a school that is ready to meet the challenges of the 21st Century. The teachers are currently working on our new curriculum which has to be ready for September 2014. There are some changes to what needs to be taught to Primary School children and to how they are assessed. We know our school well and this is an exciting opportunity to plan an exciting, engaging curriculum that meets the needs of all of our children. As the headteacher, I would say that we have been doing that for a very long time so I am confident that we will continue to provide high quality learning for the children. I hope that our new children who are coming in September are very excited about the prospect of starting with us. We have met them on several occasions and they seem to be a very inquisitive class already! Our Year 6 children are now ready to move on to the next phase of their education. On behalf of everyone at Wisborough Green School, I would like to wish them all every success in the future and hope that they can look back on their time with us with fondness, knowing that they had a brilliant start to their education which they can now build on. And finally, as another year draws to a close, I would like to thank all of my staff for all their hard work this year. Despite challenging circumstances, the team is even stronger. I would like to thank the governors for their on-going support for the school. I look forward to next year’s challenges! Best wishes, have a wonderful summer! Mrs Trudy Emberson, Headteacher 17

PARISH COUNCIL UPDATE Gatwick Airport – Flight Path Trial and Consultation SPEAK UP BY FRIDAY 15 AUGUST 2014 if you are concerned about the recent increase in air traffic - noise, frequency and height We are now aware that Gatwick Airport is carrying out a 6 month trial (started in February and to end in August) of a new flight path, which could account for the increase in air traffic noise over Wisborough Green, both during the day and at night. Gatwick did not give notice of this trial and it is thought that if we do not complain, it may be assumed by the decision makers that the increase in air traffic in this area is acceptable, becoming the norm rather than just a trial. In May, Gatwick Airport also launched a 12 week consultation (ending on 15 August) on their plans to redraw many of the flight paths around Gatwick and on the specific effects of low altitude options for new routes; the document is at : www.gatwickairport.com/gatwickairspaceconsultation The consultation document is complex and the potential implications difficult to understand; it could put many people off from responding! However, even if you do not respond to the specific consultation document, please do make your feelings known by 15 August and raise awareness in the village and surrounding communities. To ensure that your concerns are heard, and not just by Gatwick Airport, please also contact our local MP, Nick Herbert, and the other organisations listed below. Roger Moorey (24/01/1947 to 18/04/2014) Roger was born in the bitterly cold winter of 1947. He often used to tell how his Granny had taken him to bed with her to keep him warm! At an early age his great love of engineering and music began. He spent many hours under cars with his Dad repairing a succession of old cars. Music (and girls!) rather took over his life in the 6th Form at Grammar School. As a result his A level results were disappointing. Too many hours spent playing sax in the band 'The Sons of Syn'!! After a degree at Engineering College he worked for Smiths Industries in Cheltenham, where he met Judy. Inevitably Judy became one of the 'Groupies' following Roger's Rock band. Then came the move to Sussex - and Katie and Pete. When Roger was 27 he had a life changing experience when he became a committed Christian. He firmly believed in Active Christianity so, very soon, he and Judy were running St Peter's Chain Club (primary school age) followed by Cornerstone and Milestone for teenagers. This was definitely not hearing about the Christian faith quietly at home. It involved long hikes, day and night in London or on the Downs, Then there was swimming, bowling, banger racing, visits to Rock concerts, and brilliant sailing weekends, as well as weekends away at West Watch in Ashdown Forest and the Greenbelt Christian Arts Festival. All this included music, drama, an open house and much fun and laughter. Roger adored young people. He was amazed and delighted by Katie and Pete and his beautiful grandchildren. His work was hard but he relished the engineering challenges and trips to Russia, the US and Far East. His was a full and giving life. Being diagnosed with a serious lung disease in 2011 was devastating but Roger coped in a calm and open way doing all he could to have a normal and joyous life. He joined the Jazz band Riverboat Shuffle and even managed to play his beloved clarinet with oxygen! His last year has been hard and sad but Roger faced his end with us with a certain hope that gave us, his family and friends, a wonderful legacy. Judy, Katie, Pete Moorey

The Wisborough Green Sports Page Cricket Club. Website: www.wisboroughgreencc.co.uk Senior Cricket - June was a difficult month for the cricket club with our younger lads finishing their exams. However 1st XI have played 5 won 2 Lost 2 and had 1 abandoned. They are currently 4th in the division. 2nd XI have played 5 and lost them all and have slipped to 9th in the division. Junior section - The colts section are playing well and have all had slightly mixed results depending on who is available. The under 10’s are 3rd, Under 12’s are 10th , under 14’s are 4th and the under 16’s are 3rd in their respective divisions. Under 8’s and 9’s are playing lots of friendlies. We currently have between 120 and 150 kids playing cricket which is good to watch on a Friday evening. We have several boys that are representing the club at county level. Hugo March and Hughie Ragg are playing for the Northern Knights against the other 3 parts of Sussex. Hugo in action with the ball (right) is bowling well and taking wickets in an older age group. Hugo has also made his Sunday team debut taking 2 wickets in his first match against Graffham - seen left with Ben Tracy this year’s overseas player. Our other star is Josh Dixon (aged 12) from Wisborough Green who represented the U16 Sussex disability team against the U16 Hampshire disability team on Sunday 22nd June. A glorious summer afternoon in Romsey was the setting for this closely fought match. Josh picked up his first county wicket – hitting ‘middle and off’ with some accurate off-spin. By the time you are reading this article we will have had our annual Presidents match featuring a President’s XI made up from the president and friends of the village against a Chairman’s XI from the club and we will have had a cricket feast at Collards field with more than 80 of our kids playing on the day. (more news next month). Football Club. Training has commenced on the green on a Tuesday evening at 6.00pm for all interested players. The season will start at the beginning of September with the 1st and 2nd XI playing in the same leagues as last year. WGSCA. Website: www.wisboroughsports.org Nothing to report this month. The Wisborough Green Sports Page (Cont) past and present month. Anybody can submit an article if they feel I have missed anything or if they wish to add anything. If you have any sports reports that you would like included in this section please send to kenvickery@hotmail.co.uk and I will coordinate. Ken Vickery Stoolball Club. July….it is non stop!! The team is made up of many youngsters and we were very proud that 4 of the team were chosen to play for the West Division in the County Tournament. Tabitha Macey, Keavy Price, Jasmine Rushin, Emily Steere and the team played superbly in the semi finals demolishing the opposition to earn a place in the finals on 29 June at Hassocks. Unfortunately they were beaten in the final despite putting up a good fight. Well done to all our young players!! Since last writing the team have played 9 league matches. Some have been very close such as W. Green 140 V Winterfold 145 ……..and others not so close!! However a superb display of teamwork, batting, fielding and bowling was in evidence against Yapton, away on 9 July. Yapton only scored 74 after accurate bowling from both Sarah Rushin and Bethany Tidd, with the team getting 6 catches. Wisborough went out to bat and overtook Yapton’s score with 5 overs to spare!! Excellent result! Results: Stedham 190 W Green 65 ( Julie 25); W Green 112 Stedham 172 (Betts 4 wickets); W Green 112 Horsham 154; Angmering 147 W Green 86; Horsham 184 W Green 127 ( Alison 62 not out); W Green 140 ( Clare 61 not out) Winterfold 145 (Julie 3 wickets). We are still enjoying our Sunday Tournaments!! This year we have been invited ( or more accurately invited ourselves….) to more tournaments as these are good fun! We took a team all the way to Steep on 22 June and had a brilliant time, winning 2 matches and narrowly losing the other two, missing out on a place in the final by a whisker! Sunday, 13 Juy, we took part in a mixed tournament in Petworth Park, something the team have not done before, but certainly something we will be doing again. AND, on the subject of Tournaments….Wisborough Green is holding its own Tournament on Sunday 10th of August from 10.30am. This is the only time we can raise funds for the team and as you can imagine, it can be very hard maintaining our club with such a few number of people involved. We desperately need new wickets and more bats so our tournament is vital. PLEASE come along to watch, to support us, to buy raffle tickets and to enjoy what we hope will be a beautiful, sunny, successful day on our gorgeous village Green! Clare Steere 23

August Horticultural and Craft Show Marquee on the Green Monday 25th August 2014 2pm – 4.45pm Exhibitors set up by 10.15am The weather has been kind to crops so far, but ….? Will the gardeners of WG be brave again and put in what did well? Everyone enjoys seeing new competitors. Be brave, enter. Those who do, have a deep experience awaiting them. An experience of anxiety and tension and satisfaction even a possibility of joy at the end. Above all there will be such stories to tell and laugh about later. Please put in as many entries as you can. It is a real commitment to being part of this community by taking part and joining in a traditional English village Show. The Schedule is at the Village Shop so you know precisely what you could put in. There is really helpful information at the back to maximise your entries' performance as well as plenty of tips and advice. All members have these Schedules but, if mislaid, they can be bought at WG Stores from behind the counter. You do have to ask! Non members from anywhere can also enter lots of classes, just get a Schedule. So, if your friend out of the Village is a marvel at flower arranging, make a day of it and give WG entrants a bit of competition. Newcomers to showing in particular are welcome. Be brave, enter. A warm welcome to everyone to enjoy the Show. Do browse through the Schedule and find something to enter. None of our gardens have exactly the same growing conditions, be it soil, shelter, aspect, shade or being under the right rain cloud at the right time. So you could be the one with the best..... … because you had the best conditions this year. The box for entry slips will be on the fence of the The Old Forge by the toilets at the side of the Green. Last day for entry forms is Friday 22nd August.

A note from Pam Herridge: “Thank you to Pat and John for our Mystery Trip in June which followed the South Downs to Eastbourne. There we browsed a seafront market, took a stroll on the pier before enjoying a good lunch at a nearby hotel. The return journey took us to Birling Gap with great sea views of the Seven Sisters. A most enjoyable trip in good company.” 27

Wisborough Green History - The Butch The meat sold was brought in either chilled, frozen or live. Most weeks, two chilled Argentine beef cattle and 12 frozen New Zealand lambs were bought. Live animals were driven on foot from Pallingham Farm until 1945. After that they were bought live from Pulborough market. Each week around 14 beef cattle, lambs and pigs were slaughtered at the shop, sheep being the most common. They were divided equally between the Wisborough and Petworth shops. The slaughterhouse was attached to the rear of the single storey extension on the right of High Barn. Inside it had two large rope pulleys attached to the oak beams, a large iron ring set in a reinforced pillar about twelve inches off the ground. Also the room contained a large scalding tub for pigs to removed bristles from the skin. The whole business of slaughtering was very messy and, after the killing, the blood was collected in a large copper pot. The whole area was then washed down and the diluted blood, etc drained away through a gap in the outside wall. I've heard a rumour that the slaughterhouse blood was channelled into the pond that is now behind Bramshaw House over 50 yards away. I am assured by Denzil Peacock, who worked at the shop with his father in the 1950s, that this was definitely not the case. The blood ran into a large copper pot where it congealed. It was then sold for black pudding. Any blood washed from the slaughterhouse floor was used for fertiliser in the shop garden. Slaughtering was done once a week on a Monday afternoon, the animals being killed using a humane bolt killer. The numbers of animals slaughtered was only ever controlled during the second world war when there was general rationing of food; this ceased in 1950. The licence had to be renewed every year and each year there were extra requirements to be met, such as a new floor or the tiling of the walls. A later requirement was the installation of hot and cold running water; hitherto water had been heated in an old copper that was lit every Monday. The licence was not renewed in 1958 as regulations regarding hygiene continued to get stricter and so slaughtering ceased. The meat was then purchased from the Farmers Meat Company in Guildford. Here the carcasses could be inspected and suitable ones chosen for delivery early the following morning. Later on, the company got to know the Peacock's requirements and ensured that suitable carcasses were sent, thus saving a journey to Guildford. Sam Peacock died in 1963, so the business was continued by Denzil Peacock and his mother until 1965 when it was sold; running a butchers shop is very demanding necessitating a 6½ day week. It was sold to Albert Price who moved the business to the right-hand new shop built on the site of Balchin’s yard (opposite The Three Crowns) shortly after buying the business. The shop in School Road was converted into two dwellings soon afterwards. Albert sold the business to Kevan Haycock in 1974, whose business closed in 1989 when Kevan died. It was acquired by H. Grimes who traded until 1993. Just to complete the list of butcher's shops in the village, the only other one was A. W. Knight that traded from what is now Knight's Cottage; this shop closed in October 1965. I believe it was known as Lords until 1936; can anyone provide details please? 28

RIGHT: A young Denzil Peacock sitting on a dead sheep, about to be shot by the slaughterer (possibly Peter Budd) with a humane killer. His father, Sam, on the left, looks unconcerned about the imminent demise of his son! Cecil Mann (in the middle) isn't quite so sure. On the right is the copper where water was boiled for scalding the pigs and removing hair, etc. The ground is covered with the blood, etc just washed out of the slaughterhouse through a gap in the wall. Photo taken just outside the slaughterhouse c1937. Finally, I am very grateful to Denzil Peacock for providing much of the information in this article; without his assistance, it would not have been possible. As an afterthought, it seems a coincidence that the name Grinstead as a butcher until the 1920s should reappear as owner of Wisborough Green Stores in 1939 where Percy Grinstead and latterly his wife remained until 1959. Does anyway know of a connection? RB 29

Neighbourhood Watch Burglaries There seem to have been a spate of burglaries recently; one of the thefts was due to a conservatory door being left unlocked, another from an unlocked vehicle on a driveway. Please ensure you lock your vehicles and keep all outside doors to your property locked unless you can hear or see the doors at all times. People can come in when you are on the phone, watching TV, or on the computer & you won't notice them.

A local resident recently received a successful application but was asked to purchase U-CASH vouchers to a value of ÂŁ3,690 in order to purchase monies owed. Farmers’ and Village Market News

Next Market - Thursday 14th August 2014 Village Hall 9 am – 12.30 pm

BeJewelled by Julie Weston It was all down to my sister, Debbie, who lives in Cape Town, that I got the bug for beading. I was on a visit some 8 years ago when she showed me how to knot freshwater pearls, she’d been taught by a Chinese lady and in turn, showed me and I was instantly hooked..... I had finally found a hobby that enabled me to be creative! From there I went on an experimental journey, trying out different beading techniques with different types of beads and it didn’t take me long to discover the beautiful choice of colours and shapes that came in the form of beads made from Gemstones. Also known as “semi-precious stones”, it’s like opening a treasure chest when you begin to explore the Gemstone beads that are now commercially available from all around the world; Tiger’s Eye from South Africa, Amethyst from Sri Lanka, Carnelian from Brazil, Amazonite from Russia, Rhodonite from Australia and Kyanite from USA are just a few of the more commonly known Gemstones that are used to create jewellery. Most of what we think of as Gemstones are of mineral origin found in rocks, which are then cut and polished into different shapes and sizes. New dying technology has stretched nature's colouring even further, for example, Howlite Gemstone is white with grey veining and it is often dyed blue or green to resemble turquoise, or red to resemble coral. In addition to the jewellery I currently have on display, I am very happy to discuss individual requirements and make bespoke pieces. Another service that I offer is repairs and alterations; so don’t throw away that favourite necklace because it’s broken, bring it to me first and I’ll tell you if it can be fixed! A Birthstone is a Gemstone that symbolises a month of birth and the wearing of birthstones is thought to bring good luck and good health. Here are the British birthstones by month:- January : Garnet; February: Amethyst; March: Aquamarine; April: Diamond/RockCrystal; May: Emerald/Chrysoprase; June: Pearl; July: Ruby/ Carnelion; August: Peridot; September: Sapphire/Lapis Lazuli; October: Opal; November: Topaz/Citrine; December: Turquoise; I do hope you have found this article interesting and I look forward to seeing you at the Wisborough Green Village Market. Best wishes, Julie Market update  WSCC 'Better Connected Broadband' team will be at the next market with their van, to answer any of your queries in Phase 1 of their public consultations.  John Cooper of Waltham Farm Goat Dairy was attracting many sales and great interest at the Market with his milk and soft cheeses this month. The tastings were obviously much appreciated. If goats cheese tastes and smells too strong for you, let it mature for a month. Expect some new products in August.  Linda Hedger of 'Linda's Home Bakes' will be returning in August following her absence due to family illness.  July's Market Voucher's raffle was drawn by Philip Midwinter, one of the organisers, and was won by Anne Hemmings (Plaistow). Wealden Trefoil Guild On Tuesday July 1st we met in St Mary’s Room Billingshurst for a craft evening with Sue Robbins, who had brought along card and coloured strips to make tea bag folded greetings cards. We were also joined by our County Chairman Margaret Goodyer who had driven our speaker to visit us. Sue had worked hard on our behalf as she brought over the multicoloured strips, cut templates of crackers, Christmas trees, swans, tulips, squares and circles with instructions how to fold the strips in the correct order and some peel offs to embellish them. Everyone had a go and some wonderful designs were completed, especially as most of us were new to the project. It was a very enjoyable evening and at the end all examples were put on display to be admired by all. Some of the Wealden Trefoil members had volunteered to help at the Big Brownie Birthday Party held at Brinsbury College on June 21 st to help with activities and drinks. 850 Brownies attended with their leaders and had a great day. We also had volunteered to help at the Dounhurst District Guiding Picnic and Sports evening on Plaistow Village Green on July 10th , another great evening enjoyed by all. Our August 5th meeting will be at Ruth’s, 18 St Gabriel’s Close at 7pm for a Bring and Share Supper. Ruth Isaacs, Chairman Tel. 01403 785402 or June Clark, Secretary Tel: 01403 700522 40

WI Report A group of about 24 of us met outside Horsham Museum on the 3r d J ul y a nd contrary to most of our outside events it wasn’t raining; in fact it was a lovely evening. Helen Clark from the Museum took us along the Causeway, around the river and up Denne Road telling us of all the history of the buildings and the area. Did you know that there was a grave of someone who had died on the Titanic in the graveyard? If you get the chance to go there it is fascinating. As there is no official meeting in August we are going to have a ‘social’ at The Foresters, Kirdford on the 7th August from 7.30 onwards, hopefully the weather will be kind to us again! Wisborough Green Table Tennis Club PLEASE NOTE: There is NO Table Tennis on Wednesday 6th August as the Brownies are in residence at the Hall. Philip M (700402)

Wisborough Greenfingers Tips Snip out those summer fruited raspberry canes. Give the new canes room.  Snip out up to a third of blackcurrant stems – the darker the stem the older and the less fruity.  Snip out flowered mock orange blossom (Philadelphus) as new wood grows far more blossom. 

Weather Watch Wisborough Green Rainfall for June was 71mm (last year 26mm – 6 yr average was 55mm). Wettest place in the UK was Cardinham, Cornwall with 65mm. Note: WG figure was higher than the “official” wettest place – thanks to two welcome dollops of 30mm and 16mm. Most welcome for the garden! Highest temp for the UK 26.5°C at Writtle, Essex – the lowest recorded was 1.0°C at Bala, Gwynned. For most of June and up to early July the daily temperature was much the same (around the 20°C mark) as was the minimum at night (around the 11°C mark). Sunshine levels were 17% above average. Following the excellent photo of the optical phenomenon last month please send to the Editor anything you see of interest on the weather front. Weathervane

CYBER TIPS I was rather tied up when the deadline came for the July issue of our magazine, so Cyber Tips took a rest! I reported in the June issue that I had done rather a good deal with BT when I converted to unlimited broadband; if you remember I was quoted 6p a month less for my upgrade. However, when my statement arrived I found that I had actually been charged over £11.00 less. As I said at the time: It’s worth checking! I know I keep on about this but I still hear of people being caught out by the simplest of scams. I will say it again: the banks, building societies and others who deal with your money or personal details will NEVER ask you in an unsolicited email to confirm or change your password or account information. Nor will they ask you to click on a link. Be alert and never a “lert”! Peter Edmonds

Village Hall 50 Club Draw The winner of the July draw is Stuart Sharman who wins £50 The winner of the second prize of £20 is Mrs K White The August draw will be at The Three Crowns at 6.30pm on Wednesday 13 August and if any member or prospective member would like to attend they will be very welcome.
