Pastoral Letter This year, my first reminder of Christmas was in Tesco back in October! We deplore the commercial side and the pressure associated with this season of the year, so let us unwrap Christmas and see what we find inside. It was an ordinary working day in an obscure Jewish village living under the harsh rule of an occupying army. A peasant girl was unable to get accommodation in the small primitive inn. Apparently nobody would vacate their room, in spite of the fact that she was in labour, so that her baby boy was born in the adjoining stable, a cattle trough improvised for a cot. The boy grew into manhood, sharing love and compassion, knowing loneliness and hatred, suffering pain and agony - and finally death. In Martin Luther’s famous words: “He ate, drank, slept, walked; was weary, sorrowful, rejoicing; he talked, he toiled, he prayed....so that there was no difference between him and other men, save only this, that he was God and had no sin.” The birthday that changed the course of history. Even the calendar we use today start at this date. We should not be surprised, as this was the point in time that God chose to identify himself with the world we live in, through Jesus' life, death and resurrection. John records Jesus saying “I have come that they may have life and have it to the full” [John 10:10]. This has certainly been my underlying experience over many years: an experience shared by millions of people across the world this Christmas. In the next few weeks we will sing, or hear sung, the familiar words of the great carol ‘O come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant!’ The fourth verse seems to summarise the meaning of this remarkable birthday celebration: Yea, Lord, we greet thee, born for our salvation; Jesus, to thee be Glory given! Word of the father now in flesh appearing: O come let us adore him, Christ the Lord! Geoffrey Venables

- PROMISES, PROMISES!! We will be following a study course for Advent “Promises, Promises” by Nick Fawcett; each session includes prayers, Bible readings, reflections and discussion questions, etc. It is hoped that this series of studies will help us to recall some of the great promises associated with Advent and Christmas, and to make them our own. Do be in touch with Helen 700567 or Doris 700606 if you would like to ask questions or for further information. The course will be held at the home of Doris Smallwood, Fenner House, No. 2. Glebe Way, on Thursday evenings, will start at 7.00pm and finish at 8.30 pm. for eight sessions starting on DECEMBER 5th. We look forward to a happy, lively and meaningful study group.
PASTORAL CARE DURING THE INTERREGNUM It is important for the Parish to be aware that during the interregnum there is still pastoral support for those who need it. Members of the Healing Group, Village Care Team, Prayer Groups and Social Development Team all met together to work out a way forward. It was felt that all these groups should come together under one umbrella to work as one, providing prayer and care where required. Gillian Gough very kindly agreed to be co-ordinator putting people in touch with each other. Communication and co-operation is crucial for this to work effectively, so if you hear of anyone who is in need of a Vicar, is ill, coming out of hospital, lonely, moving into the village or just in need of some kind words or prayers, please call Gillian on 700157 and she will contact the relevant person.
PRAYER GROUP AND QUIET MORNINGS If anyone would like to spend half an hour in fellowship and prayer then they are most welcome at Wendy’s house (2 Clockhouse) on a Tuesday at 4.30, when prayers are said for the life of the Parish. On the third Friday of every month Quiet Mornings are held at the homes of Wendy Duff and Alison Jekyll at 10.30am. It is a peaceful time when you can relax, recharge your batteries and listen to music, poetry, readings and prayers. You will come away refreshed and ready to carry on! Please contact Wendy Duff 700295 or Alison Jekyll 700243 for details. 6

Bishop Martin visits St Peter Ad Vincula At the end of October / beginning of November the Bishop of Chichester, Bishop Martin Warner, visited the Petworth Deanery and came to Wisborough Green on Saturday 2nd of November. As we are in an interregnum, we the churchwardens, met with him and discussed the Articles of Enquiry, a 73 item questionnaire regarding the Parish and the areas of safeguarding, mission and giving. He then stayed for Evening Prayer, which was led by Rev David Twinley, our Rural Dean. Following Evening Prayer Bishop Martin spoke about the future appointment of a new incumbent of the parish and encouraged us all to be patient during this process. After addressing the congregation, tea and cakes were served and Bishop Martin enjoyed the opportunity to meet people from the parish. He clearly enjoyed his visit to Wisborough Green and was very encouraging in his comments. Mrs Helen Vause and Dr Graham Parr Churchwardens 7

From the Editor Welcome to the December edition of Ad Vincula - Your Parish Magazine. As in the past, this issue is distributed free of charge to every household in Wisborough Green. If you know of anybody who has not received their copy, please contact Roger Moody our Distribution Coordinator - contact details in the centre pages. I can’t believe it’s a year since I took on what the vicar described as a “one day a month” job! I don’t know where the time has gone and it’s beginning to feel more like a full time job now but it’s still rewarding. We have some exciting news for you this month! From the January 2014 issue, Ad Vincula will be distributed free of charge EVERY month to every household in Wisborough Green and it will feature a certain amount of COLOUR! This has been made possible, in part, by our advertisers so please support them whenever you can. The other group which has enabled us to do this is the merry band of volunteer distributers and Roger Moody has more to say about them in his article overleaf. On a slightly sad note, this is the last edition to be printed by AdPrint so we thought we’d mark the occasion by having a colour cover for the first time. Adrian and Marion Palmer (the husband and wife team behind AdPrint) have been printing Ad Vincula for many years and, although I have only been involved for a year, I have found them extremely helpful and accommodating. I thank them for all their help and support over the years. In preparation for having a colour cover every month from now on, we have moved the Village Diary, the Church contact details and the Village Organisations Directory to the centre pages. In addition to the usual articles this month, we have a report about the Bishop’s visit to St Peter’s (p5), an invitation from the Sideshows Society (p11) and updates on the Church Amenities Project (p15) and the Oil & Gas Drilling saga (p19). Finally, in keeping with the Angels and Carols theme of the Christmas Tree Festival, the frontispiece this month is the right hand panel of the famous “Wilton Diptych” (c.1395-1399). Painted on both sides, the small portable diptych of two hinged panels is now in the National Gallery, London. I hope you enjoy reading this edition and, as always, I welcome your comments good or bad! Happy Christmas and a peaceful New Year. Roland Zilz

The Spitfire Experience I flew a Spitfire last week…….and managed to land it without causing any damage! With the increasing roar of the Merlin engine, I released the brakes, slowly pushed the throttle forward, eased the stick back and rose slowly into the clear blue skies over the airfield. Soon I was flying over beaches and wooded hillsides and valleys. Up through the clouds and then heading back to my destination airfield. I lined up for a final approach, throttle back, landing gear down, cleared for landing and…… finally touched down. Taxied back to the ramp, engine off, silence, flight over. And where did I undertake this incredible experience? Wisborough Green! In a barn at Wheelers Farm we have recreated the atmosphere of a World War II crew hut. But, pride of place belongs to the Spitfire simulator. The simulator consists of a full size cockpit, with flight controls, instrumentation that responds to the performance of the aircraft. The sound of the Merlin engine is faithfully reproduced and the three huge visual displays complete the realism. Two Spitfire display pilots have flown it and have given it a tick in the box. From the Distribution Coordinator As you have read in "From the Editor" Ad Vincula is now free to every household in the parish. All this means, of course, that the merry band of deliverers has to work a tad harder to get the magazine to you - so a HUGE thank you to everyone who has delivered, and continues to deliver, the magazine. One of our greatest stalwarts, Anne Wood, who has had the unenviable task of delivering to Fittleworth Road, has had to dramatically curtail her deliveries for various reasons - so a MASSIVE "thank you" to you, Anne, for all your work over the years and to those who have been "inveigled" into joining forces to take over Anne's route. Also, one or two other folk will be moving away from the village in the future or may have other reasons for not continuing - so, again, our thanks to you. All this means that we are, from time to time, on the look out for more "postmen and women" - so if you have half an hour once a month to pop a few mags. through a few letter boxes please do get in touch with me. And to all of you who make the deliveries now, a plea. if you can't deliver any one month for any reason please could you find someone yourselves to stand in for you. It makes my job a tad easier! All this coming and going will have a few teething problems so if you don't get the magazine there will be extra free copies in the post office and in church all of which is very helpful - except if you don't get this magazine and don't read this you may not know about the free copies! So those of you who do get this edition please spread the word. Happy Christmas - and happy delivering and reading! Roger Moody 01403 700123
Advent Christmas Tree Festival This should be another wonderful festival this year when the Church will be filled again for a few days with beautifully decorated and lit Christmas trees. The theme for decorating the trees this year is Carols and Angels. The money raised will be divided again between Chestnut Tree Children’s Hospice and the St Peter ad Vincula building fund. If you would like to sponsor a tree or are a group interested in decorating one, please telephone Graham on 01403 700793 or email: graham.d.parr@hotmail.co.uk See poster on the back page of this magazine for full details of the opening times etc. Thank you in anticipation for all your support. Community Minibus Association (W Sussex) Wisborough Green WANTED! New Drivers/Escorts for the Wisborough Green Minibus Give something special this Christmas - your time! We are a branch of the West Sussex Community Minibus Association, which is a charity completely run by unpaid volunteers. We have our own VW 6-seater minibus, which is presently used twice-weekly to collect our member passengers from their homes and take them out – sometimes for essential shopping, sometimes for social reasons. Our operation of the Village Minibus is entirely due to the commitment and enthusiasm of our volunteer drivers and escorts, and I should like to take this opportunity as we approach the end of 2013, to thank them for the time and effort they have so freely given throughout the year – this is very much appreciated. As we enter 2014 we are to lose two of our drivers/escorts and I should very much appreciate hearing from anyone who feels they could devote one or two mornings (or sometimes afternoons) a month to help maintain our service to those who otherwise might become progressively more isolated – the minibus can become a lifeline to some, being their only means of transport, and, in many cases I hope it is also a great source of friendship. If you could find the time to help, I should be very happy to hear from you, and will explain what is required. Thank you. Pat Farmer, 01403 700492
Wisborough Green Sideshows Society (WGSS) WGSS New Year’s Dinner - Saturday 11th January 2014 This eagerly anticipated annual event normally sees about 100 people sitting down in the Village Hall to a sumptuous 4 course dinner with wine, pre-dinner drinks and fabulous entertainment. If you are of normal retirement age have actually retired from full time employment have lived in the Parish of Wisborough Green for at least 3 years and would like to be added to the invitation list, please contact Chris or Shirley Stride on 700495. 13
Wisborough Green Primary School News I do hope you all enjoyed our spectacular Bonfire Night, just before half term. I’m sure the fireworks get better each year! The PTA works so hard to organise what has become one of our largest community events. I would like to thank all concerned for their amazing support for our school. It was lovely to see so many of you enjoying the atmosphere, in particular the refreshments and, of course, the fantastic fireworks. The Guy competition proved very popular again, with several entries. The children whose guys received the most votes won a pumpkin full of sweets! Our Remembrance Service was held in school this year on Monday 11th November. The teachers and I led the service, reading some very poignant poetry to the children. Almost every child in the hall wore a poppy. The children sang beautifully and prayed in remembrance of those who have given their lives for the benefit of others. Our Key Stage 1 children have launched their ‘Toy Story’ learning journey and were visited this week by one of the curators from Horsham Museum. The children were able to see and play with some beautiful antique toys. Our Key Stage 2 children have continued to follow their Invaders learning journey, covering Roman and Celtic invasions, with Y6 physically building a roundhouse in the field. As part of this learning, the children will be organising a Christmas Event on Friday 6th December. The PTA will be selling refreshments. We have planned many events in the lead up to Christmas. The PTA arranged for the children to design their very own Christmas cards in September. This proved very popular with parents, who have been ordering mugs and gift tags with the same design. The Key Stage 1 nativity will be held on Friday 13th December, in the school hall this year, as the date coincided with the Christmas Tree Festival. The final week of term is already planned with a pantomime, ‘Robin Hood,’ in school, Christmas lunch and parties and our very special Christingle service on the last day of term at 11am in the church. On behalf of the staff, children and Governors of Wisborough Green Primary School, I would like to wish you all a very peaceful Christmas and a very happy New Year! Best wishes Mrs Trudy Emberson, Headteacher

The Ministry of Healing in St. Peter ad Vincula 2013 This ministry started in 2006 when the Reverend Simon Newham suggested an extension of healing that already took place within the Eucharist, Pastoral Care and Prayer . A team was trained in the ministry of healing so that this could be offered as a gentle and natural part of our public worship. The Lady Chapel offers a quiet and peaceful place beside the Healing Window for those who wish to bring their prayers and deep concerns for themselves and others. This takes place on the 1st. and 3rd Sundays of each month during the 10.30 sung Eucharist, when trained members of the team are there to pray with those that come forward. In addition we have an occasional Service of Prayer for Healing on a Sunday evening. The source comes from Jesus Christ, caring for us, comforting and strengthening us through his Love, and responding to our deepest needs. In 2013 the team has grown and training has continued with the help and guidance of the Venerable Philip Jones Archdeacon of Lewes and Hastings. Team Members--Gillian Gough, Hilary Edmonds, Richard Pinkham, Doris Smallwood, Victoria Smallwood, Suzanne Mosley, Colly Akers. The Ministry will next be offered on 1st and 15th December and 5th and 19th January 2014. Gillian Gough

Church Amenities project gets the go-ahead At last the Diocesan Advisory Committee has consented to our proposals. There were one or two stumbling blocks to this and now for the most part these are behind us. This is good news indeed and allows us to proceed with the project essential to the future well-being of our church community and for the greater good of all. Information boards have long been hanging in the church so that many people will already have had an opportunity to see what we are proposing. In broad terms we are improving the entrance to give a more welcoming appearance and make getting into the church easier. We are upgrading our catering facilities to make it easier to handle social events where refreshments are provided. We are moving the vestry to enable us to build a modern toilet and building new vestries for the vicar and the choir. Essential for all this is a new sewerage system and the external work for this will start very soon, probably early in the New Year. At the same time we will enlarge the turning area at the church and install better lighting on the steps from the carpark. This plan shows the general arrangement of the entrance and the new toilet The new glass doors at the main entrance open onto a raised platform which is at the same level as the porch so the only steps into the church from the entrance porch are the two new ones leading down into the nave. Part of the proposed work includes renovating the organ which has long needed an overhaul. This means dismantling the instrument before the main construction starts and re-installing it when the works are finished. This will allow our organ specialists to carry out important repairs and tuning. It will also allow us to raise the floor of the organ loft and increase the headroom in the new toilet. The work is not yet fully funded and strenuous efforts are needed to raise the money but we do have enough to make a start on the outside work. In all we need a further ÂŁ250-300,000 to complete the project. The churchwardens are pressing ahead with the fund-raising. If you have not already done so please look at the display boards in the church. Queries to me, Robert Armistead , 700319, or ask the churchwardens. Robert Armistead 17

THE CHRISTMAS CANDLE Last night I took a Christmas candle to my room To watch the curving beauty of the flame Against the dark. But when I turned, I was amazed, How light the darkness had become, Could that much light, Come from one small flame? And when I blew the candle out, How deep the darkness seemed. And I remembered, long ago in a manger Lay the first Christmas candle of them all, A new born child, Helpless and so vulnerable, How could this tiny flame defend itself Against the winds of life? And yet in that small spark of love Lay the light that would Illuminate the world. The light the darkness cannot overcome Which will never be put out. And we are part of that great light! Oil & Gas Exploration - An Update By October 24th - the original closing date for submissions to West Sussex County Council (the deadline has now been extended to 3 Dec) there were 706 written objections and t wo contributions in support of the proposed Oil/Gas exploration well. An astounding response and one that surely the WSCC Planning Committee must take heed of. In addition the Wisborough Green Parish Council voted unanimously, on November 5th, against the proposal on the grounds of the total unsuitability of the site. On November 13th some of the objectors and Louise Davies, Clerk of the Wisborough Green Parish Council, attended a meeting of the Chichester District Council Planning Committee, who had been consulted by WSCC on a narrow remit related to Noise Issues, Contaminated land, Air quality and Construction Management. Nine minutes speaking time was shared by four Objectors before the Councillors discussed the issues raised. The original Officer’s report included a Recommendation that the Committee have NO objection to the proposed development. Cllr Janet Duncton spoke about the intrinsic value and beauty of the traditional English villages affected and warned that the proposal threatened the very heart of these. She stated that in no way could she support such a Recommendation. Cllr Robertson pointed to the lack of information provided which he felt should mean that the Council would be unable to make any decision at all. This was proposed and seconded, but not voted on. After much discussion the wording was changed to an objection being raised for one part of the application, subject to more information. So, we feel it was a small step in the right direction. There was a meeting the next day of the South Downs National Park Planning Committee, which wants further information about the internationally important populations of bats, Bechstein and Barbastelle, given that the first Duty of the SDNP is for its wildlife. They also faced an Officer Recommendation to express No objection‌.which they moderated on the grounds of needing additional information. They were also reminded that their remit was one of being consulted. We understand that the WSCC Planning Committee is to meet on 14th January and, provided that they feel they have enough information to make a decision, they will proceed on that date or it may even be deferred so watch out for any late changes. We will be preparing our statements to make at that meeting. Thanks to all the hundreds who have contributed so far. We will continue working to get the proposal turned down. 21

Wisborough Green Fete Society FETE DONATIONS UPDATE After another wonderful village Fete back in the summer we are delighted to announce that we have been able to make the following charitable donations to local good causes. Sussex Air Ambulance
£1000.00
The Magic Carpet Appeal
£2000.00
Billingshurst Fire Brigade (Firefighters’ Charity)
£250.00
‘The Magic Carpet Appeal’ is a village charity that was started earlier this year by a group of Wisborough Green friends. The aim was to raise money to purchase an interactive play mat for a local child with complex health issues including cerebral palsy. Following a fantastic response the play mat was purchased earlier this summer and the group decided to continue to fundraise to help other children and young adults in our local area. In addition to the above we were also able to support the following charities and village groups – Wey & Arun Canal Trust, Macmillan Cancer Support, PAWS, St Peter ad Vincula and the Wisborough Green Scouts. As always, none of this would have been possible without your support back on that sunny August Bank Holiday, so thank you.

Wisborough Green History WISBOROUGH GREEN HISTORY FROM POORHOUSE TO VILLAGE HALL 3
xxx Continuing the history of the village hall, the agreements for the appointment of workhouse governors continued much as before until 1806 when the Parish took over the management. The governors were William Chilles, a farmer, who was governor from 1741 to 1753, Josiah Garton to 1764, Thomas Denn and Thomas Moore for four years until 1768, then William Batchellor until 1772, Goodyar for just one year, then William Hunt to 1778, Daniel Sefford to 1789 and Samuel Bryan of Petworth to 1806. Their remuneration was £95 pa in 1741 up to £550 pa in 1789, partly because of inflation (prices nearly doubled in the late eighteenth century) and to the extent they personally paid for the upkeep of the inmates. There were only minor changes to the agreements, some reflecting a (very) minor degree of compassion. There were a couple of interesting clauses in 1841, viz. To bear the said parish harmless from all small pox and broken bons and all removalls of persons intruding themselves into ye said parish". And "To give publique notice as soon as any child is eight years of age . . . the parish to pay him (the governor - RB) 2/- a week for every such poor child in the work house if the child is not disformed or lame or deemed uncapable to be put to apprentice." By 1768: "The parish agreed to let the workhouse to a number of poor disabled and infirm'd people to the management of William Batchellor to be found and provided by him of the necessary sustenance of Life at the rate of 2/- a head per week . . . and to allow the free and proper Liberty of putting in and putting out of the Workhouse such poor People as occasion may require and as may seem consistent with reason and circumstances." In 1789: "It is agreed to Lett the Poor of the said Parish to Mr Samuel Bryern . . . . for the sum of five Hundred & fifty Pounds Only with these Exception: Nothing to do with Bastardy . . . nor Expense of Removals no more than five Pounds for the Space of one year, nor with the Small Pox”. Moving onto the building itself, it was originally externally similar to the main part of the present village hall. The newer parts added since are the eastern part that contains the bar and committee room (c1800), the flat-roofed extensions at the rear (1976) and the main entrance (1955). The building was constructed as three stories; the ground and first floors had windows front and rear that are still in place today. The rear wall was interrupted by a huge chimney breast in the centre that limited the original number of windows though this was removed in 1976 to build the extensions. The second floor was built into the roof space and had four dormer windows each side. The workhouse had at least two doors. The current fire escape door had a small canopy above and was probably the main entrance. There was a door on the right hand end of the rear wall that gave access to the garden (of which more later). I believe that the buildings to the west, i.e. the kitchen, toilets and Vine Room were not original, but were added during the latter part of the eighteenth century; I will cover this next month . 31 RB
Recipe of the Month SMOKED HADDOCK FLORENTINE – Serves 10 This easy version of fish pie is perfect for Christmas Eve or a holiday lunch for the family. It can be assembled the day before and can be served with rice or mashed potato, but I usually serve it with crusty bread. 700g/1½ lb fresh spinach Salt and pepper Grated nutmeg 6 hard boiled eggs, shelled and halved 1.1kg/2½ lb undyed smoked haddock, skinned 40g/ 1½ oz fresh breadcrumbs 75g/ 3oz parmesan freshly grated. CHEESE SAUCE 1.2 litres/ 2 pints milk 100g/4oz butter 100g/4oz plain flour 100g/mature cheddar, grated 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard Preheat the oven to 220C/Fan 200C/Gas 7 1. Melt the butter for the sauce in a pan and then add the flour, stir and let it bubble to cook the flour. 2. Remove from the heat and gradually add the milk. Return to the heat and slowly bring to the boil, stirring continuously until thickened. Season with salt and pepper. 3. Put the spinach into a large pan with 2 tablespoons of water, cover and put onto the heat until the spinach has wilted. Drain and squeeze out any excess water. 4. Stir 6 tablespoons of the white sauce into the spinach and spread on the base of a large, buttered dish. Place the halved hard boiled eggs onto the spinach. 5. Cut the smoked haddock into manageable pieces and sit these on top of the eggs. 6. Add the grated cheese and mustard to the remaining sauce and pour over the raw fish. Sprinkle the top with mixed breadcrumbs and Parmesan. 7. At this stage it can be kept covered in the fridge for up to 24 hours. 8. Bake in a preheated oven for about 35 minutes until the haddock is cooked and the topping golden brown. 32

Farmers’ and Village Market News Next Market Thursday 12th December 2013 Village Hall 9 am – 12.30 pm Individual House Signs on wood and slate by Barry and Angela Tye Barry was apprenticed as a silk screen printer and poster writer in the 1970s and also trained as a sign writer. Traditional sign writing went out of favour as computerised lettering took over for commercial signs so Barry moved into another career in the printing business, but he still carried on doing his sign writing because he so enjoyed it. Seven years ago, Angela gave up working in accounts and suggested that she would go to craft/farmers' markets to see if there was any interest in hand written individual signs. It quickly became apparent that there was an interest in house signs done in the traditional way. People who came to the markets enjoyed talking to us about having an individual house sign done to their individual requirements in style and fitting. Lots of signs were also bought as practical or quirky presents. Since we started we have tried to expand the range of items that we offer, so there is something fresh for people to look at on our stall. Farmers markets give us the chance to meet people each month and chat, which is very enjoyable. People can also usually see Barry doing work at our stall. This often gives them ideas as to what they would like. So, come and see us at the market, see what we do and have a chat. All our work is original and our signs all individually done to order.
LATEST NEWS FROM THE MARKET Cheese, olives and deli delicacies on John Claxton's stall again this month. Durwen Banks of the linseed products stall was delighted by a purchaser from last month ringing up and enthusing about the unexpected lack of pain from arthritic joints. They came back for more linseed oil capsules. Do talk with Durwen about the contents of linseed and why they are important. Nick of Quail fame is now producing guinea fowl sausages, no pork added at all. Superb treat for non pork eating pals. This month Nick will be popping hot guinea fowl sausages in baps, so breakfast/lunch here. All stallholders are now geared up for the festive season with goodies and presents quite apart from essentials. Save time and avoid hassle. Enjoy shopping very locally in a friendly place. Remember, no Market in January but we will be resuming in February 2014. Our very best wishes to you for Christmas and the New Year. Wisborough Green Farmers and Village Market Committee 36
Wisborough Green Horticultural Society Monday 2 December 2013 8pm Village Hall Talk “High Beeches” by Mr Hird Local location near Handcross makes High Beeches fairly accessible, so we can see for ourselves. It is a large landscaped woodland garden of 27 acres, dating from the early 20th century. Planting was done for a change of interest plant colour themes over the course of a year. Originally it was the home of the Loder family, some of whom went on to found Leonardslee and some, Wakehurst Place – a part of Kew Gardens in Sussex. There are very many plants and trees that were specially collected by intrepid plant hunters for those passionate garden owners. The national collection of Stewartias is here. The original “discovered” shrub/tree was from Virginia and sent to John Stuart 3rd Earl of Bute and named after him but the name was misspelt! He was deeply involved with the founding of the botanical gardens at Kew. The stewartias have blossoms a bit like single camellias but the leaves are deciduous and turn into red and yellows towards the end of the year. They are plants of subtlety. These gardens are also reputed to have the best natural acid meadows in Sussex. Another best are the Champion trees. Trees that are the tallest of that type in the land. Lots of activity there but we will be in comfort on a winters night looking at delightful photos and listening to the tales told. If you have not been to our talks do pop in, enjoy it and meet other gardeners and visitors over a cup of coffee. Several people new to the Society came and enjoyed their visit and commented on how friendly it was. . The Table Top competition starts again. The theme will be the same each month to allow scope for as many as possible: “From your own garden/allotment, five preferably flowering or evergreen stems displayed to best effect – of one or more variety.” Points will be awarded each month, accumulating for a prize at the AGM. As the flowering plants die down so it becomes quite exciting seeing people's originality in creating an arrangement of five. Aija Hamilton

Wealden Trefoil Guild On Tuesday 5th November the Guild met in St Mary’s room for a talk by Paul Berry of B.E.A.T who gave us an interesting insight into his voluntary work as a first responder with the Billingshurst Emergency Assistance Team, the type of calls they receive, falls, cardiac arrests, chest pains, breathlessness and simple wounds. They also give reassurance to both the patient and the family until paramedics arrive where necessary, but they are not called to road accidents and major traumas. The equipment they carry costs about £2000 and includes a defibrillator which they are trained to use, and they raise funds for, but are well supported by local organisations as well as individuals. Four members supported the Remembrance Day Parade and laid a poppy wreath at the War Memorial. They will also be helping at the Scout and Guide Christmas Bazaar and card making with the Billingshurst Guides and Brownies Our next meeting on December 3rd will be a short concert of Carols and Christmas Music for the Residents and friends at Wyatt House at 7pm and will serve Coffee or tea and mince pies . WI Report Our November meeting on the 7th was our Annual Meeting to which about two dozen members came. We had our usual wine and nibbles and Melanie Careless ran the election to find out who would have the privilege of being President for the forthcoming year. I’m very glad to report that Gaye Harris has again been elected so all of you who didn’t manage to make this meeting can now come out from behind the sofa! The committee has more or less remained the same except Jan Nast is taking a sabbatical and Penny Gaze and Dotty Smith have agreed to join our happy band. Six of us went to Washington WI’s Call my Bluff evening which was really a wine tasting evening which we all enjoyed. Our next meeting on the 5th December will be our Christmas Party. Please don’t forget to bring a wrapped present, no more than £3 in value, and a plate of finger food. Happy Christmas. Sue Nicholls Gaye Harris 01403 820229

Wisborough Greenfingers Tips Clear water surfaces of leaves. Clear crowns of plants of leaves Clear paths and grass of leaves Hide bundles of leaves beneath shrubs or the hedge. Stuff bin liner with leaves and spike it with loads of holes, hide it for a year to get super compost.
CYBER TIPS I know I keep on about this but today, as I write, I have received an email purporting to come from BT, my provider. Since my article last month I have had a bit of trouble with my BT account in the midst of all the changes they have made, so I was on my mettle. I think I have got it sorted now but I have lost my favourite customised page. But I digress. I received the email which started like this: “From: To: Sent: Subject:
ebilling@bt.com <undisclosed-recipients> 30 October 2013 11:17 Important Information
Hello, The Classic version of BT Yahoo! Mail will be replaced by our new version on 29th October 2013. So it's time to upgrade, before you lose your email access………” It went on a bit, asked me to “Click here” (to agree terms and conditions) and finished “Thanks for choosing BT”; it was signed by “Warren Buckley, Managing Director, Customer Service.” (who normally signs emails to me) At first glance it looked authentic. Be careful, I thought, there’s plenty to tell you that it isn’t! The rogues who send out these scam messages often leave clues. The first was <undisclosed-recipients> indicating that BCC had been used for multiple addressees. BT doesn’t do this. The second clue was the date of dispatch one day later than the changes were made. Thirdly the message started “Hello”; BT and other utilities usually address customers by name. This clearly could not be done when the message was sent to more than one recipient. I have written before about clicking on the From Address to judge its authenticity, and when I did this time, just to confirm my suspicions, lo and behold I found that the sender was naveedzoqi@gmail.com. I forwarded the message to the real BT. Click before you click! ! 41
