Pastoral Letter A Christmas and New Year to remember Five days without power, sometimes isolated by floods, all family celebrations postponed, church services cancelled…but, marshalling thoughts, (as winds howl in the ancient woodland, reminding us that more storm is to come) lessons to be learnt, blessings counted and priorities sorted. “Count your blessings, name them one by one and it will surprise you what the Lord has done” 1.
Time: for reflection. No TV to fill one’s mind with mostly forgettable rubbish – just a small battery radio for news and music.
2.
Shelter: taken for granted (‘till the larder sprang a leak) but remember street sleepers and refugees.
3.
Light: candles and hurricane lamps. The living flame such a joy in the darkness – a symbol and reminder of the love of God.
4.
Fire: the reassurance of a small delivery of dry logs to supplement ours being damp – for our log fire. Our card thermometer from Help the Aged reading COLD – danger of hypothermia, leading to stroke or heart attack, TURN UP your heating!! But we survived!
5.
Not being lonely: one husband and two large furry cats with tails like bell ropes, tufts on their ears and eyes like stars in the candlelight. Telephone still working (we have no mobile signal here) enabling us to keep in touch with neighbours in the woods and family in London.
6.
Food: the realisation that one really needs so little (bread, cheese, eggs, milk and some vegetables). We all have too much and the shame of having to take bin bags of spoilt fridge and freezer food to the dump – when people are starving and even in the UK food banks are operating.
To sum up – awareness of God’s power in things great and small – the raging and frightening storm and the miracle of a tiny ping pong ball of a mouse, brought in totally unharmed by cats, its whiskers so fine they could hardly be seen. “God moves in a mysterious way His wonders to perform. He plants his footsteps in the sea And rides upon the storm. Ye fearful saints fresh courage take The clouds ye so much dread Are big with mercy and shall break With blessings on your head”. Wm Cowper 1731-1800 A peaceful and happy new year to you all. A.J. 5
Church News THANK YOU! We would like to say a very big thank you to everyone who has continued to help us keep our church running so well whilst we are in this time of Interregnum. There are too many of you to mention individually, but your continued support is much appreciated. Thank you! Helen and Graham
CHAIN OF PRAYER There was a meeting in church on Friday 10th January of the teams which are responsible for pastoral care and it was decided to restart the chain of prayer within the village. If you would like to become a link in the chain or know of someone in need of urgent prayer please contact Gillian 700157 or Wendy 700295. The next meeting will be on Wednesday 19th February after the mid week communion. Everyone from the Healing Team, Village Care Team, Prayer Groups and Social Development Team are welcome.
LENT QUIET AWAY DAY Brother Angelo has kindly agreed to lead a Lent Quiet Away Day at Micklepage Barn, Nuthurst on Saturday, March 8th. If you are interested in coming along then please let Helen or Graham know.
ALPHA COURSE There has been some interest shown in an Alpha Course being run again here in Wisborough Green. It would be very encouraging in this time of interregnum if we could run a course this Spring / early Summer, so if you or anyone you know would be interested in exploring the meaning of life and the Christian faith whilst discussing all those unanswered questions please contact Sandy and Geoff Venables on 701925 or Helen Vause on 700567. Each week the group meets to share a meal together, watch a 40minute DVD and then have an open discussion. EVERYONE is welcome! As David Suchet the actor said: 'I cannot think of any other course that covers the introduction to the core beliefs of the Christian faith in such an accessible way and so relevant to today'.
VILLAGE CAR SCHEME If you, or anyone you know of, needs transport to get to a hospital, dentist or doctor's appointment please contact Jennie Burr on 700607 who will arrange for someone to drive you there. More drivers are still needed to help with this service. If you can spare half a day a month, please contact Jennie Burr on 700607. Thank you.

Church News (Cont.) SERVICE FOR HEALING A Service for Healing will be held ay Kirdford Parish Church on Sunday, 23rd February at 6.30pm. Please do come along and support the Kirdford Healing Team as they have been very supportive of us. For more details contact Gillian 700157.
PASTORAL CARE DURING THE INTERREGNUM It is important for the Parish to be aware that during the interregnum there is still pastoral support for those who need it. Members of the Healing Group, Village Care Team, Prayer Groups and Social Development Team all met together to work out a way forward. It was felt that all these groups should come together under one umbrella to work as one, providing prayer and care where required. Gillian Gough very kindly agreed to be co-ordinator putting people in touch with each other. Communication and co-operation is crucial for this to work effectively, so if you hear of anyone who is in need of a Vicar, is ill, coming out of hospital, lonely, moving into the village or just in need of some kind words or prayers, please call Gillian on 700157 and she will contact the relevant person.
Advent Christmas Tree Festival - An Update Although we still have some small amounts of money coming in we are delighted to be able to let you know that we have raised a total of just over £2,200 after all costs have been covered. There will be some additional Gift Aid to recover. This is a wonderful result and we will be sending a cheque for their share to Chestnut Tree House in the very near future. Thank you again to all those who helped and supported this venture in any way.

From the Editor Welcome to the February edition of Ad Vincula - YOUR Parish Magazine. I thought we had, at long last, found the ideal person to take on the job of Advertising Coordinator but, unfortunately for us, a short time after joining us, he found himself in the happy position of being offered a full time job and had to withdraw. If anybody else would like to consider the position, please let me know. On the Distribution front, as stated last month, we are totally reliant on a dedicated group of volunteers to bring the magazine to your door. We are aware that some properties, especially those situated down long private drives or on the extremities of the village may not be receiving a delivered copy. If you are in this situation, or know of somebody who is, could you please contact Roger Moody on 700123 and he will check whether it is feasible to add you to one of the existing distribution rounds. If this is not possible, we are making copies available at various points around the village for people to collect if they wish. These collection points include the Church, WG Stores, all three pubs, Bellmans and The Works (Wharf Farm). In addition to the usual features, this month we have an update on the search for a new vicar (p13), a request for information on properties with wells or boreholes (p17), an update on the Celtique Planning Application (p19) (don’t forget the Parish Meeting on 31 January!), a report on the very successful Annual New Year Dinner (p23-25) and an article on the Mobile Library (p12). Reading between the lines, I suspect, with the latter, the old adage “Use or Lose it” may soon apply with the County Council continually looking for cost savings. I hope you enjoy reading this edition. It is very gratifying to receive messages like those below but I am sure there must be some out there that believe we could be doing something better! I welcome your views, comments and suggestions. Roland Zilz

West Sussex Mobile Library Service Let the library come to you! Free of charge and open to all West Sussex residents West Sussex’s mobile library service offers a library on your doorstep for those areas of the county without a local library. The mobile library is a library in miniature - with all the facilities you’d expect from a West Sussex library. We offer a range of adult books - both fiction and non-fiction from the latest bestsellers to older classics. The mobiles also offer a request service, so if we don’t have the book you’re looking for you can order it and collect it on your next visit. Children aren’t forgotten either - both mobile vehicles carry a range of children’s stock from picture books to books for Teens and audio CDs. Each summer children who use the service can take part in the summer reading game - and get stickers and a medal. The vehicle is fully accessible, with a lift to help you on and off if you find steps difficult. Both mobiles also stock large print and audiobooks for borrowers who require material in those formats. Joining couldn’t be easier - it takes five minutes and all we need to see is something with your name and address on it. Joining is done on the spot so you can borrow items straightaway, and every member of the family gets their own ticket. In Wisborough Green the mobile stops by the Pavilion. To find out when the mobile library visits check out our website at www.westsussex.gov.uk/libraries or give Horsham Library a ring on 01403 224 350 (Ed. or see ‘What’s Happening’ page 46). Horsham Library can also answer any questions you may have about the service as well as renew and order books for you if you’re already a borrower. We look forward to welcoming you on a West Sussex Mobile Library soon! 12
Update on the process of finding a new Vicar for St Peter’s There are four vacant posts at the moment in the Petworth Deanery and so Bishop Mark is taking the opportunity this presents to rethink how rural communities are best served. The outline of his proposal is detailed below and the hope is that the posts will be advertised by the end of February countrywide.
Reorganisation of Petworth Deanery - how it affects Wisborough Green The rural context and makeup of village populations make it very hard for parish clergy to assemble the 'critical mass' necessary to provide a consistently good and adequately varied experience to the congregation as a whole and particularly for children and young people. The challenge, as the Bishop sees it, has more than one element to it. Firstly to recruit such clergy as are necessary to provide effective engagement not only with the older generations who are represented by village congregations but also with young people and their families. Secondly to provide those experiences and activities which are necessary and healthy for the church but which are very difficult to provide at parochial level in small and scattered communities. With the above in mind, Bishop Mark proposes the following plan for the villages of the benefices of Wisborough Green, Fittleworth and Stopham, Sutton Group and North Chapel, Ebernoe & Lurgashall. 1. A Mission Team should be established and based at Wisborough Green. The Priest in Charge of Wisborough Green should be the Mission Team Leader. Among the skills of the people appointed should be, evangelism, liturgical expertise, work with young people and skills in discernment and training for lay ministry.
Parish Boundaries
2. It is envisaged that some of the experiences of church, which cannot be offered in villages where ‘critical mass’ cannot be established, will be offered by the Mission Team and that they should be enabled to work across the district and to offer on a regional basis those things which it is impractical to offer in small communities. Helen and Graham Churchwardens 13

Wisborough Green Primary School News We have launched Spring Term 2014 with Arts Week. The focus has been on bird watching, which has really captivated the children’s attention. Initially, as with any project we would undertake with the children, much time is spent honing the children’s observational skills. The children have researched different birds and are in the process of collecting data about the birds they find in and around Wisborough Green. Many children have been inspired to continue this work at home. This wonderful preparation and focus has resulted in some absolutely stunning sculptures. The children have been working with clay or wire to create their masterpieces. Some children have combined the two very successfully. We are expecting a visit from the RSPB soon as part of this project. As with all learning at Wisborough Green, we include special weeks throughout the school year to enable children to learn new skills which they can transfer to learning in other areas. It engages all of the children who are then keen to share what they have achieved with others. We always celebrate these weeks with special assemblies so that all of the children can see what each class has done. This is a whole school focus and it always fascinates me to see how it works with all ages. Our Explorers, Inventors and Detectives (Reception, Y1 and Y2) have focussed on ‘Owl Babies,’ an absolutely wonderful text, and their art work is all about owls as you can imagine. The older children have been doing their own research about different birds and have created their sculptures more independently. Our Breakfast Club has grown! We now have three members of staff running it every day. The children arrive at 8am and have a healthy breakfast with their friends. The children then have time to play games inside school or outside (they prefer to be outside on the playground!). It has a lovely atmosphere and it’s a great start to the day for about 20 of our children. The Government provides Pupil Premium, a special fund that we can use to improve a child’s experience at school. We can offer Breakfast Club to some children in school with this funding. The building project is still going ahead and we hope to have a new classroom and changing room by September. The rest of the school is being re-decorated during the year and new lighting has been installed, as the building is looking a little tired now and really needs some attention. Our playground, which must be about 40 years old, is now looking rather worn too. We hope we can make it last until the building work is completed, as we hope to replace the whole surface in time for September. This is a very exciting time for the school and the children are, as always, at the centre of everything we plan to do. Kind regards, Trudy Emberson Headteacher 15

Wisborough Green Fete Society Our AGM will be held on: Monday 17 February 2014 - 8pm at the Three Crowns. Please do come along – everyone is welcome. If you would like to join the WGFS or find out more about how you can help please contact Laura on 701049 or email wisboroughgreenfetesociety@gmail.com HAVE YOU GOT A WELL OR A BORE HOLE? The Parish Council is looking into the possibility of undertaking some environmental monitoring to establish a record of current readings for water, air, noise and light pollution. These measurements could be used in the future to identify the presence of any new contamination or demonstrate the impact upon our community should the proposed oil and gas drilling be given the go ahead. In addition to streams and rivers, samples of water from wells and boreholes may be collected and sent for independent analysis. If you have a well or borehole could you please contact the Parish Council as soon as possible so that these can be plotted onto the village map. Thank you for your help. Proposed Oil & Gas Exploration Site Celtique Planning Application - An Update The deadline for members of the public to comment on the application to construct an exploratory well for Oil/Gas at Northup Copse on land by Boxal Bridge closed initially on October 24th 2013. Since then the two Parishes of Kirdford and Wisborough Green, together with Keep Kirdford and Wisborough Green (KKWG) had until November 22nd to submit views and comments given the monstrous size of the accompanying information, the application was over 1,000 pages. Both Parish councils unanimously said NO. The Parish Councillors were not allowed to express an opinion themselves until they had read all comments and come to their view (or that would have rendered them unable to take part in making the decision at all), they had until November 30th to send in their own letters whereby there was a small extension of the deadline until December 3rd. As we all drew breath, WSCC Planning Department wrote to Celtique Energie, on December 4th requesting additional information. These requests amounted to 4 sides of A4 paper! The planners wanted to know by December 6th if this was feasible and receive the actual information by December 30th. As 2013 drew to a close there was no response by the company, but a note to the planning department on December 31st revealed that Celtique Energie would be submitting their responses on January 10th. Still, with bated breath, we await the outcome of the validation process the Council must undertake before they can circulate this new information for consultation...... which is where you come in again. Please don't miss this extended opportunity to voice your views. Don’t forget to include the application reference WSCC/083/13/KD in your correspondence. Can we suggest that you keep an eye on the KKWG website www.no-drilling.co.uk for an update or sign up for the regular newsletter. We are now awaiting information regarding a further deadline by which comments on any new points can be submitted. At the time of writing, our neighbours in Fernhurst have to submit their views on their local application by the same company proposing to drill in the South Downs National Park by 22nd January 2014. There is and will be a lot of media news in the coming weeks regarding this contentious issue so please register your seat for the Public Meeting with Nick Herbert at the Parish Hall on January 31st. Tickets available from the Parish Clerks: Wisborough Green Louise Davies 01403 701102 or Kirdford Irene Marshall 01403 783477. KKWG 19

Royal Voluntary Service Royal Voluntary Service is a volunteer organisation that enriches the lives of older people and their families across Britain. Volunteers are vital to Royal Voluntary Service. Without them we simply wouldn’t exist. Currently, more than 40,000 dedicated community volunteers deliver services that help older people live the life they want to. Whether it’s taking an older person to the shops, delivering a meal to them or even walking their dog – our volunteers make a big difference that is appreciated and valued. Through them, we want to help create a society where everyone feels valued and involved whatever their age. We believe old age should be celebrated, and so we should: we’re 75 years old and still going strong. We are always looking for new, enthusiastic volunteers who can help us to make sure older people get the support they need and we’d really appreciate your help. Anyone over the age of 14 can join and the great thing about volunteering is that it’s so flexible. You can fit it around all of the other things that you have to do. Whether you can spare a few hours once a week or fortnight or can give a couple of days each month we will have an opportunity for you. We all know that the number of older people in our communities is set to grow in the future and we have to be ready. So over the next few years we will be expanding our services and developing new ones so our need for community volunteers will be even greater. Please see our recruitment poster above. If you, or someone you know, think you can help then please contact our volunteering department on 0845 601 4670, email volunteer@royalvoluntaryservice.org.uk or search for opportunities online at www.royalvoluntaryservice.org.uk. 21

Wisborough Green Sideshows Society New Year Dinner 11 January 2014 Each year the Sideshows Society hosts a dinner, which is a Wisborough Green Tradition. The dinner is funded by donations from ‘Friends’ and the BBQ run by the Lee family at the Summer Fete. The dinner is specifically for the retired members of our village and on January 11th ninety people attended our New Year’s Dinner. Phil and Sandra from Pimpernel Events transformed the village hall into a cabaret dinner club, covering the walls with coloured drapes, which complimented the round tables with fresh roses as centre pieces and, by utilising very clever coloured lighting, an amazing ambiance was created. On arrival our guests were treated to a champagne reception followed by a four-course meal starting with a smoked fish terrine with Melba toast. The main course was roast loin of pork with crackling and all the trimmings. Dessert was my favourite, sticky toffee pudding with toffee sauce, followed by a selection of cheese and port. All agreed a sumptuous feast. Each guest received a commemorative engraved pen to take home. This was an amazing meal for which I cannot really take credit; it was completely sourced, cooked and supplied by the Three Crowns. Tim Skinner has been absolutely brilliant with his outstanding support to the Sideshows Society in helping us to continue this village tradition. So - a huge vote of thanks to Tim, his head chef Mel and the rest of the Three Crowns team. The dinner party was a huge success largely due to the hard work of the committee and the small army of volunteers who turn out to help us. Contributions to the success also came from The Billingshurst Lions and the Wisborough Green Sports Club plus all our guests who really came to enjoy themselves. The society was delighted to welcome Dave Newton and his band “Easy Jazz” who once again provided the dance music with our guests waltzing and jiving the evening away. The Wisborough Green Glee singers, an amazing group of local talent, entertained with a rendition of classic pop songs with everyone joining in and waving their arms to the Beatles - Let It Be! If either you or your wife/husband/partner have reached normal retirement age and have lived in the village for more than three years and would like to come to the 2015 dinner then let me know and I can add you to the invite list for next January – in the meantime we would like to wish you all a Healthy and Happy 2014 If you would like to know about becoming a Sideshows Society ‘Friend’ or a committee member then please make contact. Wisborough Green History FROM POORHOUSE TO VILLAGE HALL 5 At a public vestry meeting of 21st July 1788 it was the opinion of M Evans (curate), Edward Woodhatch and John King (churchwardens), Wm Bridger and Thos Seward (overseers) and 23 others that some addition should be made to the poor house. They agreed to erect an additional building to the Old House (i.e. the original poorhouse RB) on or nearly the same plan as the Old One with a cost not to exceed £300. It was agreed that tenders should be delivered for building the same; it was also agreed that a cellar should be added. Fortunately, an Act of Parliament passed in 1783 made it easier for funding an addition to a workhouse. This was Gilberts Act that provided, among other things for the poor, that if the expenses of building a poorhouse exceeded £100, the parish officers could borrow at interest and secure the loans by a charge on the poor rates. It seems nothing much more was done until a public vestry meeting in May 1795 when it was considered that they needed to repair or build a house or houses for the benefit of the Poor of the Parish of Wisborough Green. An amendment four days later stated that "our Workhouse shall be immediately fitted up and accommodated for the purposes mentioned . . . . . or Build a new one in some suitable convenient place”. By the 26th August 1795 it was agreed that "our workhouse shall be immediately enlarged, fitted up and accommodated . . . ". By the 5th September, two of His Majesty's JPs (i.e. for King George the Third) Wm Smyth and R Bettesworth held a meeting at which the whole project was approved. Basically, they considered that Wisborough was of sufficient magnitude to have a workhouse provided for the reception and employment of the Poor and that the provisions of Gilberts Act (for the better relief and employment of the poor) were satisfied. Co-incidentally, an Act of Parliament dated 6th October 1795, demanded “Better relief and employment of the poor”. This may have prompted the enlargement of the poorhouse and although we don't know for sure, we must assume that the reason was overcrowding. However we do know that the Parish hired houses, possibly for additional accommodation when the poorhouse was overcrowded or possibly to let to deserving persons. Construction started in 1797 and the result was a severe-looking three-storey brick built extension with attic rooms with dormer windows and a red tiled roof attached to the eastern end of the existing poorhouse. It ran from the present committee room (with the maisonette above) to within 20' of the churchyard wall. Although the part with committee room and bar still stands, the remainder to the south was demolished in 1955 as unsafe. The location of this part can be seen clearly today at the end of the car park where the low wall is all that remains. The upper floors were accessed by an internal staircase towards the north end. The third floor had attic rooms that were linked with internal doors between each of the rooms all accessed from a single internal staircase. There was an outside metal open staircase on the eastern wall that would have been used for emergencies. A toilet block was built along the churchyard wall leaving a gap between it and the end wall of the extension. Cont. Overleaf.......

Recipe of the Month Lemon Mousse I first made this recipe over 30 years ago and it had the posh title of Souffle Milanese in those days. It is always very popular especially if served with raspberries or caramelised oranges. It isn’t difficult to get a light, fluffy texture as long as you follow the rules carefully. I made it for a lunch party over Christmas and it was the first pudding to go. I was asked how to make it, so this is for you, Priscilla! Finely grated rind of 3 lemons 6 tablespoons lemon juice 100g/4oz caster sugar 4 egg yolks 3 tablespoons cold water 1 tablespoon powdered gelatine 175ml/6 fl oz double cream 4 egg whites 1.
Finely grate the lemon rind free of white pith into a large bowl, add the juice, sugar and egg yolks. If you have a large, free standing electric mixer whisk all the ingredients together for about 10 mins until the mixture is thick and creamy. If you only have a hand held electric mixer place the bowl of ingredients over a pan of hot water and whisk for about 10 mins, remove from the heat and whisk until cool.
2.
This is the crucial part of the recipe – the mixture at this stage needs to be pale and thick enough to coat the back of a spoon. It can seem a long time to be whisking, but it is worth it.
3.
Spoon the measured water into a small basin and sprinkle the gelatine across the surface. Leave for a few minutes for the gelatine to absorb all of the water. Stand the basin in a pan of warm water until the gelatine has totally dissolved, remove from the warm water and leave to cool a little.
4.
Slowly dribble the gelatine into the lemon mixture whisking as you do.
5.
Lightly whip the cream being careful not to over whip - it should be the same consistency as the lemon mixture – and gently fold the two together.
6.
Whisk the egg whites until stiff, but not dry. Again it is better not to over whisk as it is easier to fold in.
7.
Turn the mixture into a bowl and chill for at least 3 hours.
8.
Decorate with lemon slices and whirls of piped cream. Helen V 33

Wey & Arun Canal Trust Canal restoration donations work harder through match funding Donating £10 to the Wey & Arun Canal through www.localgiving.com will soon result in £20 going towards the work to restore the canal and reconnect the Rivers Wey and Arun. The Wey & Arun Canal Trust has already raised £16,000 through the Grow Your Tenner match funding scheme and has signed up again in a bid to gain a further £11,000 share of the £500,000 funding available under the initiative. The funding is a result of a grant from the Office for Civil Society and is being administered by Local Giving. Donations made to WACT under the scheme will be matched pound-for-pound up to £10 per donation and, by using Gift Aid, the donation will be worth 25% more too. According to WACT chairman Sally Schupke, the initiative presents a great opportunity to raise funds for essential restoration work and money from this new phase of Grow Your Tenner could go towards schemes like the reconstruction of Gennets Bridge Lock. “The scheme matches single donations of £10 but the most valuable way people can help would be to pledge up to £10 per month for six months through what localgiving.com calls a monthly donation,” said Sally. “You are only allowed to set up one monthly donation to any one charity but perhaps other family members and friend could also register to make a donation too.” To find out more about donating to WACT and Grow Your Tenner, please visit: https://localgiving.com/charity/wact and click either the “Give Monthly” or the “Single Donation” button.

Farmers’ and Village Market News
Next Market Thursday 13th February 2014 Village Hall 9 am – 12.30 pm
The Blacksmith
Written by himself.
Robin is an artistic and traditional blacksmith who enjoys creating new and unusual items from various types of metal. You can see a selection of these each month at Wisborough Green Farmers Market. The majority of items Robin creates are bespoke, such as a garden gate complete with a spider’s web with a spider lying in wait, a trivet with a leaf motive of a specific height to suit a fireplace, hinges to suit large oak doors. Most things can be made; you are only limited by your imagination. His interest in blacksmithing began when he joined the Royal Navy in 1966 (training in marine engineering) and has remained with him to this day. After leaving the Navy he has held many roles in the world of engineering; mainly as a mechanical maintenance engineer and subsequently as an electro/mechanical maintenance engineer for a large well known water company. His blacksmithing skills certainly came into use when working and being involved with large pieces of Victorian, pre/post war machines, sadly mostly consigned to the scrap heap now. Although blacksmithing techniques were part of his working life, blacksmithing itself was mainly just his hobby. This hobby really took off for him when he finally retired a few years ago and now is very much part of his life, producing artistic pieces and traditional items such as door furniture, hanging basket brackets, candle holders etc. Blacksmiths can make most items for the home and garden, but the problem being, you can only accommodate so many items in your own and family and friends homes. The enjoyment of demonstrating an ‘old type’ but very much relevant craft at shows and events, talking to young people who have never seen blacksmiths manipulating hot metal, is very rewarding. It is nice to see that there are a number of young people now taking up the craft, predominately through the artistic side, with quite a few very capable young ladies ‘taking up the hammer’ to carve a niche in the black art of blacksmithing. The resurgence in the profile of blacksmithing in the last three decades is in no small part due to the promotion of the craft by the British Artist Blacksmith Association and in latter years several colleges throughout the country are offering training courses. As was said at the beginning, you are only limited by your imagination, if you have an idea you would like him to create, come and seek Robin out at the market. Monday February 3rd 2014 8pm Village Hall Talk “Pruning – a General Guide” Mark Saunders. Do we really need this talk? The wild untamed winds have inadvertently done some but not altogether horticulturally correctly. Dead wood may have tumbled but we demand a lot more from pruning. We want shape, height, texture as well as maximising blossom and fruiting. On Monday 3rd February we can hone up our skills on pruning. We can learn the first principles in pruning. We can pick up tips from years of experience in a wide range of plant pruning. The talk is by Mark Saunders: “Pruning – a general guide”. If you have got anything to prune or wish to check if anything would be improved by pruning then here's your chance to check or ask the expert. Any pruning problems can be discussed as well. Mark is the Head gardener at Fittleworth House. This immaculate garden is open in the Open Gardens Scheme. He comes from a horticultural background: his father was a nurseryman, whilst his mother wrote books on fuchsias. The illustrating photos should be a treat to see as Mark won a RHS photographic competition and Medici, the card people, commissioned him to take photos for greetings cards. Even if you have no outside plant to prune do come and enjoy the photos of a local garden that will be open this summer just a few miles away in Fittleworth. The Table Top competition starts again. The theme will be the same each month to allow scope for as many as possible: “From your own garden/allotment, five preferably flowering or evergreen stems displayed to best effect – of one or more variety.” Points will be awarded each month, accumulating for a prize at the AGM. As the flowering plants are well battered by rain and wind, it becomes quite exciting seeing people's originality in creating an arrangement of five. Aija Hamilton 39

WI Report On January 9th we were treated to a most entertaining talk by one of Wisborough’s own entrepreneurs. Trina Rollings from Fishers Farm Park told of the very beginning of the enterprise when she and her husband Tim started with soft fruit ‘pick your own’ in the 1980’s to today where they run one of the largest UK award winning children’s play and farm venue’s in West Sussex. She told us of all the trials and tribulations over the years and how the farm has progressed to today, having just opened yet another indoor play area. I can confirm that the new slides are quite breath-taking especially the helter skelter when trying to keep a two year old from overtaking her grandmother! Our next meeting on the 6th February is a demonstration and talk by Ruth Isaacs on Quilting. If you would like to find out more about the W.I. or Quilting then the Village Hall is the place to be at 8.00 p.m. on the 6th February. Sue Nicholls Gaye Harris 01403 820229

CYBER TIPS Tracing an Email When you send an email to an open multiple address list, (not using BCC because this address list is a group all familiar with the addressees) it is tedious to enter each addressee separately. The solution that many have found is to “reply to all” to a previous email. The trouble is that the subject remains the same as the previous message and the trail goes with it, even if it is on a new subject and is irrelevant to what has gone before. That makes tracing the email at a future time difficult. Unless….. ….. on the reply you remove the “re:” and change the Subject as appropriate, then delete all the previous data and emails, and start afresh preserving all the original addressees. Q.E.D.
