Pastoral Letter As you read this we are busy making preparations for the licensing of our new priest-in -charge and looking forward to a new phase in the life of our church and community. The church is described as being in an ‘interregnum’ from the time when one incumbent has left the parish to when a new vicar arrives. It is a term which is borrowed from monarchy and government where it means being ‘between Kings’. By the time Rev Clive Jenkins is installed as our new priest-in-charge the interregnum will have been almost eighteen months. Although this feels to be a long period it is not unusual within the Church and is considerably shorter than some interregna within the life of this and other countries – the longest in England, Ireland and Scotland was the Republican period of the Commonwealth between 1649 and 1660! We have been fortunate to have been served extremely well by a wide range of visiting clergy and readers and everybody has pulled together well including all those in the congregation who have faithfully attended the services during this period and those who have joined us more recently. The life of the church community has continued and developed and we are grateful for all the support shown by so many people. The licensing service for Clive will be led by the Right Reverend Mark Sowerby (Bishop of Horsham) and The Venerable Fiona Windsor (Archdeacon of Horsham) and will be held on Thursday 12th February 2015 at 7-30pm in church. This is an important event in the life of our parish and is open to everybody to come to celebrate this joyous occasion. Please keep Clive, Marion and their family in your prayers and thoughts over the coming weeks as they prepare for their move and welcome them wholeheartedly to our village in due course. You do not need to say anything or be specific about what is troubling you if you don’t wish to. This can be a very special and peaceful time and a great comfort if you are troubled by anything.
VILLAGE CAR SCHEME If you, or anyone you know of, needs transport to get to a hospital, dentist or doctor's appointment please contact Jennie Burr on 700607 who will arrange for someone to drive you there. More drivers are still needed to help with this service. If you can spare half a day a month, please contact Jennie Burr on 700607. Thank you.

Prayer Chain of Prayer Worried about a loved one, a friend or yourself and would like prayers to be said by a chain of people? Contact Wendy 700295 or Gillian 700157 and they will start the chain by contacting the person next to them on the list and so it goes all the way round. A copy of the chain is on the notice board at the back of church. Prayer is a powerful and important part of life and one should never under estimate its effect. You don't need to give any details of the problem just ask for prayers to be said and it will happen. Please note that it will be treated with total confidentiality. Prayers are offered for parishioners who are in special need, especially the sick and frail. Please advise either of the churchwardens of any persons or situations you would like remembered in this way. All those living in particular roads are prayed for regularly, the whole parish being covered over a 12-week cycle: Week beginning:

From the Editor Welcome to the February edition of Ad Vincula. In addition to the usual articles, this month we have reminders about the Mobile Library Service (p12) and the WG Neighbourhood Plan comment deadline (p17), an invitation to attend the licensing of our new vicar (p13), an update on the oil/gas exploration appeal (p13), an article on the valuable work carried out by Open House in Crawley (p15) and a report on the Sideshows New Year Dinner (p19). Magazine Articles & Cover Photos I was struggling a little this month with a shortage of suitable articles for the magazine. I’m sure there must be lots of budding writers and journalists out there just itching to get their work published? I can’t promise to publish everything I receive but I would love to hear from you with your ideas and inputs. I am also running out of ideas for pictures to use on the front cover of AD VINCULA. There are certain months where I like the picture on the cover to reflect the relevant Christian festival - e.g. December - the Nativity. Other than these special months, I try to use a local picture that reflects or is relevant to that particular month. If you would like to see your favourite picture on the front cover of AD VINCULA, either send it as an email attachment or, if in print form, I can scan your photo and return it if I have your address. Email me at editor@stpeterswg.org.uk or phone on 700632 if you want to discuss. When sending please indicate to which month your photo relates. The best pictures will be rewarded by being used on the cover of Ad Vincula magazine and an acknowledgement to the photographer given. Finally, I hope to see as many of you as possible on 12 February at 7.30pm in church for the licensing of our new vicar, Clive Jenkins. Best wishes, Roland Zilz
Deputy Editor/Advertising Coordinator Your magazine needs you Ad Vincula needs someone to take responsibility for coordinating the advertising for the magazine. This is not an onerous job - most of the hard work on the advertising front for 2015 has already been done! The post does, however, require computer literacy, attention to detail and people skills (to persuade businesses to advertise and pay promptly!). This post (voluntary) will also act as Deputy Editor. The role involves working with advertisers to produce artwork, managing the invoicing and liaising closely with the Editor to ensure adverts are suitable and space is available. The ideal person would be someone comfortable with the use of Microsoft Office and perhaps a flair for graphic design for those rare occasions when we are asked to design an advert. Full training will be given with ongoing support from the Ad Vincula Editorial Committee. If you are interested or would like some more information, please contact Roland Zilz on 01403 700632 or email editor@stpeterswg.org.uk. 9

Wisborough Green Primary School News The Spring Term is the shortest term of the school year and that must be why it feels like the busiest! Since last Summer term, we have been working very hard on our new curriculum and assessment systems. We will be sharing this work with parents this term. The new curriculum is already on our website. Parent consultation evening is arranged part way through this term and parents will be able to meet their child’s class teacher to discuss how their child is progressing. In school we teach the following subjects; English, Maths, Science, Computing; History, Geography, Art and Design, Design Technology; Music, Modern Foreign Languages and PSHCE (Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education). Alongside this, our aim as always is to present learning in a fun and engaging way. Our new learning journeys this term are very exciting: ‘Amazing Animals’ in Reception; ‘Polar Quest’ in Key Stage 1 (Year 1 and 2); ‘Mission to Mars’ in Year 3 and 4 and ‘All the Fun of the Fair in (Year 5 and 6). The teachers work hard to plan exciting visits and visitors to bring the learning alive and make it as practical as possible. Our homework tasks are linked to the topic so that the children can practise their skills at home. Our Year 5 children have been given the opportunity to apply for a very important role in school. We are looking for two Junior Road Safety Officers. This is a West Sussex County Council initiative which schools are encouraged to join. The children have to write an application for the job and we will be deciding which two children will take on the role. We are doing this as part of our Travel Plan, which is also available on the website. As you will know as local residents, parking is not great around school drop off and pick up times and we hope that our new JRSOs will be able to work with the children (and parents) to encourage everyone to park safely and considerately. The children are very keen and I know the decision about who to appoint will be a tough one. Our JRSOs will be highly visible as they will be given fluorescent jackets to wear while they are on duty. The role will develop further during the school year and the JRSOs will appoint additional ‘advisors’ (JRSAs) to help them. As you will see from the Travel Plan we are doing as much as we can to alleviate the parking problems in the village. I am also in the process of re-designing our car park to accommodate more parking but as with everything to do with schools this is going to cost a lot of money! Our outside environment is the next big development, with plans to add canopies to our Early Years Area, re-design our pond area, add playground markings and re-design our car park. It will be lovely when it is finished! Kind regards, Trudy Emberson, Headteacher 11
West Sussex Mobile Library Service Let the library come to you! Free of charge and open to all West Sussex residents West Sussex’s mobile library service offers a library on your doorstep for those areas of the county without a local library. The mobile library is a library in miniature - with all the facilities you’d expect from a West Sussex library. We offer a range of adult books - both fiction and non-fiction from the latest bestsellers to older classics. The mobiles also offer a request service, so if we don’t have the book you’re looking for you can order it and collect it on your next visit. Children aren’t forgotten either - both mobile vehicles carry a range of children’s stock from picture books to books for Teens and audio CDs. Each summer children who use the service can take part in the summer reading game - and get stickers and a medal. The vehicle is fully accessible, with a lift to help you on and off if you find steps difficult. Both mobiles also stock large print and audiobooks for borrowers who require material in those formats. Joining couldn’t be easier - it takes five minutes and all we need to see is something with your name and address on it. Joining is done on the spot so you can borrow items straightaway, and every member of the family gets their own ticket. In Wisborough Green the mobile stops near the Pavilion. To find out when the mobile library visits check out “What’s Happening” on page 46 of this magazine. Horsham Library can also answer any questions you may have about the service as well as renew and order books for you if you’re already a borrower. Visit the website at www.westsussex.gov.uk/libraries or give Horsham Library a ring on 01403 224 350. We look forward to welcoming you on the West Sussex Mobile Library soon! 12
WISBOROUGH GREEN NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN 2014 - 2029 Produced in consultation with the community by Wisborough Green Parish Council
REMINDER TO ALL WISBOROUGH GREEN RESIDENTS THE FUTURE OF WISBOROUGH GREEN The Wisborough Green Neighbourhood Plan is an important document for the future of Wisborough Green over the next fifteen years. It concerns everyone who lives in the village and values its unique heritage and community. This is likely to be the last, locally organised, opportunity for you to influence its content. What do you need to do? 1.
Read the Draft Plan: the Plan can be found: Online at: http://wisboroughgreen.neighbourhoodplan Printed copies available at: The Post Office, The Cricketers Arms, The Three Crowns, The Old Mill Café, Zest Hairdressers and The Pavilion.
2.
Let us know what you think by 12 noon on Monday 16 th February 2015. You can do this by: Email: Please download form from village website (www.wisboroughgreen.org) and email back as an attachment to: plan@wisboroughgreenpc.org Return the form that you received in the post: via the Parish Council post box at the village hall, collecting box at the Post Office or return by post to: Wisborough Green Parish Council, PO Box 255, Billingshurst, West Sussex, RH14 0WT.
What happens if we don’t have a Neighbourhood Plan? New development is inevitable. Without a Neighbourhood Plan, development applications and their approval could revert directly to CDC policies without recourse to local influence or opinion. Applications could be approved in excess of the allocated site requirement of a minimum 60 houses and the village would have little influence on the position or design of such housing. You can see what an important and influential document the Wisborough Green Neighbourhood Plan is for us all, so please take the time to read and give your comments. CONSULTATION FINISHES AT 12 NOON ON MONDAY 16 TH FEBRUARY 2015 SO ALL COMMENTS MUST BE RECEIVED BY THIS TIME 13

provides both a direct access hostel and a day centre for adults in need. There are 24 beds for homeless men and women, available to those in need regardless of their issues, needs and history. Issues such as alcohol and substance misuse, mental health problems, severe relationship breakdowns, recent release from hospital or prison, etc., can be addressed and supported by a team of experienced project workers. Residents can stay for up to 28 days and pets can stay with them wherever possible. A team of specialist workers are available during the day to offer further support to residents and day centre visitors. The Drop-In Day Centre can be accessed by anybody who needs help, advice or just the company of somebody who cares, empathises and who tries to understand. Visitors to the day centre can access services that include: a health team working with mental health and substance misuse issues, an advice worker specialising in benefit advice, a resettlement team to explore housing options, workshops and classes, hot food and drinks, internet access, empathy and kindness I visit Open House every other week and there are not enough places there and it is disturbing to see homeless people sleeping outside just waiting for a vacancy. There is also an area in Crawley known as Tent City – West Sussex is not as cosy and comfy a place to everyone. If you have any unwanted bedding perhaps you could contact me? Wisborough Green Sideshows Society New Year Dinner 10 January 2015 Each year the Sideshows Society hosts a New Year Dinner for the retired members of our village, which is a Wisborough Green Tradition. The dinner is funded by donations from ‘Friends’ and the BBQ run by the Lee family at the Summer Fete. On January 10 th eighty five people attended our Dinner – Phil and Sandra from “Pimpernel Events” transformed the village hall into a cabaret dinner club, with coloured drapes, which complimented the round tables with centre pieces comprising of roses, pleated fans and candles and, by utilising very clever coloured lighting, an amazing ambiance was created. On arrival our guests were treated to a champagne reception followed by a four-course meal starting with a hearty winter soup. The main course was roast turkey with all the trimmings, the dessert, a mixed fruit crumble with custard and cream, followed by a selection of cheese, port, tea, coffee and mints. I think you will agree a sumptuous feast. This was an amazing meal for which we cannot really take credit; it was completely sourced, cooked and supplied by “The Three Crowns”. Tim Skinner has been absolutely brilliant with his outstanding support to the Sideshows Society in helping us to continue this village tradition. So - a huge vote of thanks to Tim, his chefs Zoe, Peter, Craig and the rest of “The Three Crowns” team. The dinner party was a huge success due to the hard work of the small committee and the army of volunteers who turn out to help us, very many thanks to you all. Contributions to the success also came from The Billingshurst Lions who generously sponsored the table wine and the Wisborough Green Sports Club for the after dinner tipples, plus, all our guests who really came to enjoy themselves. The society was delighted to welcome Dave Newton and his band “Easy Jazz” who once again provided the dance music with our guests dancing the evening away. The Wisborough Green Glee singers, an amazing group of local talented ladies, entertained us with a rendition of classic winter pop songs with everyone joining in the singing to ABBA’s – “Thank you for the Music” If either you or your wife/husband/partner have reached normal retirement age, have lived in the village for more than three years and would like to come to the 2016 dinner, then let me know and I can add you to the invite list for next January – in the meantime we would like to wish you all a Healthy and Happy 2015 If you would like to know more about becoming a Sideshow ‘Friend’ or a committee member then please call me for a chat. Recipe of the Month Baked Pears with Almonds and Apricots This is an easy, delicious pudding that's a great alternative to traditional baked apples, and quicker too. It works best with pears that are nicely ripe, though not over ripe squishy ones. Serves 4 2 very large, ripe pears 50g roughly chopped almonds 8 dried apricots Finely grated zest and juice of 1 lemon 2 tbsps apple juice 1 tsp honey 180C/gas 4 Baking dish lined with baking parchment. 1.
2.

Peel the pears and cut in half lengthways. Scoop out the cores with a teaspoon to create a cavity and take a small slice off the underside so they will sit without wobbling and put them in the baking dish. Mix together the chopped almonds, dried apricots and lemon zest and distribute the mixture between the pears. Sprinkle with lemon juice over the pears, spoon on the apple juice and then trickle over the honey. Cover the dish with foil and bake for 20mins until the pears are tender, then uncover and return to the oven for 7-10 mins or so to lightly toast the almonds. Serve hot, with any juices poured over and cream, crème fraiche or natural yogurt.
Variations Try with walnuts and prunes or hazelnuts and raisins. The apple juice can be replaced with Calvados or Brandy for a more grown up version. Helen Vause
Shoebox Appeal Thankyou Thank you very much everyone for the shoeboxes you filled. 20 were collected from St.Peters, and 26 from the Trefoil Guild. They were taken to the Worthing Depot to join thousands of others from all over the country, and were shipped over in time for Christmas, for the underprivileged families and elderly people of Eastern Europe. They were received with great joy and delight. On behalf of them, thank you all once again. Suzanne Mosley 27
Wey & Arun Canal Trust COMPASSES BRIDGE PROJECT As reported last month, the Wey & Arun Canal Trust is nearing the 60% mark for the appeal to carry out its first full restoration project in Surrey. More than £413,000 has been raised of the £700,000 needed to bring back to life a section of the waterway between Dunsfold and Alfold in Surrey. They key part of the plan is the building of a new bridge at one of the entrances to Dunsfold Aerodrome, at the end of Three Compasses Lane in Alfold. De-silting and reprofiling has already been carried out on much of the canal in what is its summit pound, along with work to secure water supplies. The new bridge will replace the main barrier to navigation in this section – a concrete causeway into the aerodrome which was built during the Second World War. Once the bridge is ready for use, on a realigned entrance road, the causeway will be demolished and boats will be able to travel freely on the canal for one-and-a-quarter miles. Trust chairman Sally Schupke said: “We are restoring part of the canal in Surrey nearly 150 years since it was closed down in the 19th Century. There will again be a green corridor between Tickner’s Heath in Dunsfold and Fast Bridge on the A281 at Alfold.” Waverley Borough Council is considering a planning application for the bridge and road realignment and it is hoped enabling work can start in the early part of 2015. Waverley Borough Council is considering a planning application for the bridge and road realignment and it is hoped enabling work can start in the early part of 2015. Mrs Schupke added: “Our aim is to officially re-open the restored section in time for the 200th anniversary of the northern part of the canal being declared open at the Compasses site in September 1816. This is an exciting part of the trust’s overall plan for the Wey & Arun, especially as it will bring part of the canal in Surrey back to life. There will be opportunities for everything from Above: Project engineer Tony Ford narrowboats to canoes and, of course, the (left) and site manager Dave Evans on canal is great for wildlife, walks in the the site of the proposed new Compasses country and cycling.” Bridge on the Wey & Arun Canal, with Surrey’s new canal section will join th e co ncr e te c au s e wa y i n th e around three miles of fully operational canal at Loxwood in West Sussex, where background. 28
Wey & Arun Canal Trust (Cont) the trust has a visitor centre and around 10,000 people a year enjoy excursions on its boats. It is hoped pleasure trips will also be run on the Dunsfold-Alfold section. The new bridge project is being run by a trust director, Tony Ford, a chartered civil engineer with extensive experience of designing roads and bridges. The site manager is trust member Dave Evans, who works as an ambulance technician. The trust is also planning restoration of sections between Shalford and Alfold in Surrey of the 23-mile Wey & Arun. Eventually, there will again be a link from London to the sea at Littlehampton, using the rivers Thames, Wey and Arun and the canal. Keep up to date with the canal restoration at www.weyandarun.co.uk
Special Cruises on the Wey & Arun Canal, Loxwood Special cruises will be running on the canal on Mothering Sunday, 15th March. Tickets cost £13 for adults and £9 for children. Themed Easter Cruises will be running on all four days of the Easter weekend from Good Friday, 3rd April to Monday 6th April. All your favourite E a s t e r characters will be on the canal to entertain you – come along and join in the fun! The trips take 35 minutes and depart at 11.00am, 12.00 and 2.00pm. Children will receive a chocolate gift from the Easter Bunny while adults enjoy refreshments and the chance to unwind and enjoy the scenery. Tickets cost £9.00 per person and booking in advance is advisable. The boat departs from the wharf beside the Onslow Arms on the B2133 in Loxwood and travels along the decorated canal and through a restored lock. Wisborough Green History - G The small narrow lancet window in the south aisle of the church is a reminder of the days when this parish, together with Kirdford, Northchapel and Chiddingfold was the centre of the glassmaking industry of the Weald. The window is made entirely from fragments of sixteenth century glass made by Huguenot protestant refugees and recovered from various glass houses in the district and was presented to the church in 1968 by Hugh Kenyon of Kirdford at the conclusion of his work. He was a leading expert on the Huguenot refugee glass works and his book "The Glass Industry in the Weald" published in 1967 is an acknowledged authority on the subject. The origins of glazing goes back to at least the sixth century when it played a decorative and functional role in churches and chapels whose architects realised that the interior holy area was enhanced by translucent windows. The structural features of the Gothic style of building that originated in 12th century France included external buttresses and pointed arches that enabled buildings to become much higher without needing massive walls for support. As a result, the window openings became larger often resulting in what seemed to be walls of glass split only by narrow mullions that ran up to the roof. A hallmark of many of the grander cathedrals was the inclusion of massive and beautiful rose windows containing glass of many colours. The practice of glassmaking was gradually changing as the glaziers tried new techniques to match the changes in architecture; however many of the techniques had already been established in a manual written in the 12th century by Theophilus, a Benedictine monk. By the 16th century, a Florentine artist, Giorgio Vasari, a great admirer of Michelangelo, appreciated that Theophilus's techniques were still valid when he wrote his famous biographical work in 1550, but he also recognised the excellence of Flemish and French glassmakers and their superb use of colour and their skills at painting and firing glass. Glass occurs naturally in nature when natural sands and rocks from volcanoes, lightening strikes and even meteorites, often with a high percentage of silica, are heated to high temperatures. The molten material then cools so rapidly that it doesn't form the lattice crystalline structure that would be usual for atoms in a solid; instead the atoms have the properties of a liquid but because they are held rigidly in place they are unable to flow like a liquid, so glass is sometimes known as a rigid liquid being neither a liquid nor a solid. The main ingredients of window glass are sand (silica), vegetal ash, an alkali made from dried beech wood, bracken or seaweed and a small amount of lime (ground limestone) 30

GLASSMAKING IN THE WEALD fired in a wood fired kiln to 1500째C. It was necessary to add powdered metal oxides in the form of mineral earths to make coloured glass, copper for red or green, cobalt for blue, manganese for pink or purple and sodium for yellow. The main type of clear glass before the arrival of the Huguenot refugees was nearly transparent but with a pale greenish tinge (called white glass). The centre of English glass making from the 14 th to the 16th centuries was Chiddingfold and the neighbouring villages around the dense ancient forest of the Weald on the Surrey and Sussex borders. These were thriving local industries whose glassmakers' names showed that the founding families had been continental immigrants in the 14 th century. In the 16th century a further influx of Huguenot glass-making families from Normandy, Lorraine and other parts of France where their glassmaking excelled settled in the Weald, including Wisborough Green. They were all fleeing catholic persecution and even massacres in the French Wars of Religion from 1562 to 1598.
n St Peter ad Vincula, WG
Geography determined the location of the industries and thus where the French glassmakers would settle. They needed unlimited stocks of timber, especially beech and oak, to make into charcoal to fuel the furnaces. Also needed were sand for the silica, bracken for alkali fluxes and clay for bricks and crucibles. It has been estimated that it took ten tons of wood to produce one ton of glass, so an adequate fuel supply was a very important consideration. The glassmakers rented areas of woodland until the supply was exhausted and then moved on. They often combined glass making with the farming year, shutting down their furnaces in the summer in order to help with the harvest. The Weald thus suited their needs perfectly. In 1573 a Royal Commission complained that the glass and iron industries in the Weald were consuming all of the woodland as well as making bad roads even worse with heavy traffic throughout the year carrying timber and charcoal and spoiling agricultural land. At the time ancient timber was particularly valued by the Royal Navy who needed it to build ships. In addition, there was a need to protect the interests of the Sussex ship building industry and so a commission declared that all trees within 12 miles of the coast should be protected for its use. Finally in 1615 Parliament decided that the glass industry was using up so much timber that it sought to ban glass manufacturing at the expense of the contemporaneous iron industry in the area. All of this resulted in the French glassmakers being forced to move westwards because of a shortage of timber. Concluded next month with details of Huguenot glassmaking and Wisborough Green. RB 31

Neighbourhood Watch Theft of Land Rover Defenders Between 26th October 2014 & 21st December 2014, there were six thefts of Land Rover Defender vehicles across Hampshire. There is no reason to believe this type of theft is restricted to Hampshire. In all incidents the vehicles that have been stolen are of the same type, namely: 90 or Short Wheel Base types Built between 1995 & 2005 Fitted with 200 TDi or 300 TDi series diesel engines All have been modified in some way by the owners None are fitted with more than the basic factory fitted anti theft systems Why these vehicles? They have now reached ‘cult status’ as far as Landrovers go, and hold their value on the second hand market. Their value & desirability is set to increase due to the manufacture of the current model of Defender stopping towards the end of 2015. The types stolen are not packed with electronic components like more ‘modern’ vehicles, so don’t need specialist knowledge to maintain. If broken up for parts, the components are interchangeable between most models of Defender and therefore have high value. If you own a vehicle of this type please do what you can to make it secure.
Never give out your bank details...... Police are urging residents to be wary after an 82-year-old man was tricked into handing over his cash card and account details to someone claiming to work for his bank. The victim was phoned by a man who claimed to be from his bank and said his debit card needed to be replaced. The pensioner was tricked into giving account details over the phone and was then told to give his debit card to a courier who arrived at his door. The courier then left with the card, which was used shortly afterwards to make purchases worth more than £1400. There has been a recent rise in reports of this type of crime although more people who have fallen victim to this deception may have been put off calling the police because they feel embarrassed. Please be reassured that we do want to know about these matters and your call may help to prevent another person being a victim of this well practiced con. Cont. over.......

Neighbourhood Watch (Cont.) Detective Inspector Gavin Patch said: "Under no circumstances would the police or your bank request your PIN number over the telephone or arrange collection of your bank cards from your home address. Never give out your bank details or hand over your bank cards to someone who has contacted you in this way. If you have any suspicions, please do not use the phone you have just been called on to contact the police or your bank, in case the offenders are still on the line. If possible use another phone to contact the police to report it, contact a friend or relative to alert them or wait for at least half-an-hour before trying to ring”. If you know anything about similar scams or those involved, contact Sussex Police using any of the means below quoting Operation Edisto.
Other Crime News and Advice Nuisance Phone Calls Scam Someone in Wisborough Green received a phone call telling them that they can stop nuisance calls for £40 a month. This is a scam. They can be stopped for free by ringing BT on 0800 800150. Theft of Oil Even though the cost of heating oil has been dropping of late, it is still important to be aware of the potential for theft. If you have an oil tank, especially if it’s visible from the road, please make sure you have secure locks fitted. Mark your Property It is worth reminding everybody that the Police will mark your property & come to your house for free. They say no stolen goods they find are marked by them - it is a real deterrent. Think about where you leave your house keys Please don't leave house keys in a flower bed, under a stone or dustbin etc as thieves know about these places .Give a spare key to a friend or reliable neighbour. Wisborough Green Horticultural Society Monday 2nd February 2015 8pm Village Hall Talk by John Negus - “Twelve Months of Colour ” Flowers and foliage from January to December. What exciting combination of plants and colours can be concocted? How many of these are already bedded down in your garden? Will my Sarcococca confusa be mentioned? Such a lovely soft perfume wafted from the bush on that sunny, blue and windless day in January. Well worth the wait. Which of the Daphnes will he praise? John is a well trained and experienced gardener – Wisley and Merrist Wood Horticultural College. He is also a photographer, so visual delights and reminders of plant forms and blossoms that may not be familiar can be looked forward to. John lectures and is an after dinner speaker as well as being a journalist and broadcaster. Sounds a good combination of talents. The Table Top competition starts again. The theme will be the same each month to allow scope for as many as possible: “From your own garden/allotment, five preferably flowering or evergreen stems displayed to best effect – of one or more variety.” Points will be awarded each month, accumulating for a prize at the AGM. In view of the talk, it will be interesting which of plants will have been mentioned in creating an arrangement of five. A chance to be artistic with just five different plant stems in your garden. Do come, bring a pal who would enjoy this talk with loads of lovely photos. It could take the place of a hypothetical garden visit in February but with less trouble and effort! Members and non members welcome. Refreshments and chat afterwards. Aija Hamilton 40

Wisborough Greenfingers Tips What about taking a few snaps of your garden when Ad Vincula comes? Comparing them over the year and with next year could be really interesting. What about sowing/planting a tough annual like an English marigold or later a nasturtium in a pot and putting it in a bare spot or in sight from the kitchen window? So moveable, so easy, so cheery. What about trying something new in the garden? Perhaps some vegetables like beetroot in a pot or a ridge cucumber tied to a cane as it grows. 42

Highest temp for the UK was 14.2°C in Nantwich, Cheshire and the lowest was at Cromdale, Strathspey a chilly -9°C. Will report next month if 2014 was the warmest since records began. A sunny December 141% of normal levels – no doubt that sunshine is forgotten already! Weathervane
CYBER TIPS They are watching us! I hope that you have noticed that the adverts that appear on your screen when you log on to the internet, frequently reflect what you have been doing recently. For instance I have just booked our holiday for this year with Expedia.com and within hours, emails arrive and windows open up from Booking.com displaying details of flights, hotels, restaurants and other information about the place we are going to visit. I have sent an email to Booking.com asking that I be unsubscribed to all this unnecessary advertising. After all, I have booked the holiday already and am unlikely to be influenced by further suggestions. To their credit, the adverts stopped as quickly as they arrived.
