Pastoral Letter “O Jesus, I have promised to serve thee to the end, Be thou for ever near me, my master and my friend.” These are the first two lines of my favourite hymn and for me they sum up the central theme of what being a Christian is all about. When you make the choice to become a Christian, you live your life with Jesus, his example, his teachings and his supreme sacrifice central to everything you do. I have recently been part of the Alpha course in Wisborough Green and greatly enjoyed all the discussions and thought provoking questions from others in the group. We were a very mixed group and included others, like me, who have been Christians for a long time, as well as those new to faith, those wondering if they had a faith and those who were certain they did not have a faith. It is this mixture that makes the discussions so stimulating because we all had to really think about what we did believe and how we live our lives as witnesses to the great love of God. The Alpha course is an excellent way of exploring faith wherever you are on the Christian journey. The meetings took place in the lovely surroundings of Richard and Helen’s house and began each time with a meal – Helen warned us at the first meeting that you can’t lose weight on the Alpha course! The meal allows everyone to get to know each other in an unthreatening environment and over the eleven weeks that we met we all enjoyed each other’s company. After the meal we watched videos of talks from Holy Trinity, Brompton, where the concept of Alpha originated, and then discussed the issues raised. The talks were given by a range of inspiring speakers. On Sunday 6th July at 6.00 pm we will be celebrating the journey we have made with the Alpha course, along with the rest of the congregation at St Peter ad Vincula and friends and family, in an Alpha Songs of Praise. We have all been asked to pick our favourite hymn and for me this was an easy task. As a member of the church choir I have sung a huge range of hymns over the years and many have phrases that stick in my mind and come to me when I am feeling in need of support and prayer. The overriding message of Alpha is that God loves every one of you and that Jesus was a real person who has inspired millions of people to follow his example. Alpha aims to spread the word to the wider community and our Songs of Praise aims to do this too. Please come along, wherever you are on your Christian journey and join us in celebrating. Come and join in the hymns, think about the words and let them inspire you or just come and listen and find out that Christians are not miserable but joyful! O Lord open thou my lips and my mouth shall shew forth thy praise. Psalm 51 v 15 Henrietta Warwick

Church Notices OPEN GARDENS A huge thank you to everyone who worked so hard to make this years Open Gardens the best ever and to everyone who opened their garden. Three hundred and seventy people visited the gardens, enjoyed a delicious tea or glass of Pimms and strolled around our lovely village. Nearly ÂŁ2,800 was raised which will go towards the building project.

BUILDING PROJECT Phase one of the Building Project, which includes the drainage works, enlarged turning circle and new outside lights, has now been completed, so a very big THANK YOU to everyone who has given so generously over the last few years enabling us to press ahead with this work. Your support is very much appreciated. A large fundraising programme will be launched in the Autumn so that Phase two, which includes the new toilet, kitchen area, Vicars vestry and glass doors, can commence as soon as possible.

CHAIN OF PRAYER Worried about a loved one, a friend or yourself and would like prayers to be said by a chain of people? Contact Wendy 700295 or Gillian 700157 and they will start the chain by contacting the person next to them on the list and so it goes all the way round. A copy of the chain is on the notice board at the back of church. Prayer is a powerful and important part of life and one should never under estimate it's effect. You don't need to give any details of the problem just ask for prayers to be said and it will happen. Please note that it will be treated with total confidentiality..

VILLAGE CAR SCHEME If you, or anyone you know of, needs transport to get to a hospital, dentist or doctor's appointment please contact Jennie Burr on 700607 who will arrange for someone to drive you there. More drivers are still needed to help with this service. If you can spare half a day a month, please contact Jennie Burr on 700607. Thank you.

PASTORAL CARE DURING THE INTERREGNUM It is important for the Parish to be aware that during the interregnum there is still pastoral support for those who need it. Members of the Healing Group, Village Care Team, Prayer Groups and Social Development Team have come together under one umbrella to work as one, providing prayer and care where required. Communication and co-operation is crucial for this to work effectively, so if you hear of anyone who is in need of a Vicar, is ill, coming out of hospital, lonely, moving into the village or just in need of some kind words or prayers, please call Gillian Gough on 700157 and she will contact the relevant person. 6

From the Editor Welcome to a packed July edition of Ad Vincula. In addition to the usual articles this month, we have a Parish Council update (p12), an update on the Oil/Gas Exploration Planning Application (p13), an article on Brother Angelo’s celebration of 45 years as a priest (p21) and a report on the very successful Open Gardens Weekend (28-29). It is very distressing to learn that, even in an idyllic village such as Wisborough Green, thieves are about in broad daylight. I refer to the snatching of a handbag containing the bride’s irreplaceable engagement ring while the wedding was actually in progress! (see Neighbourhood Watch (p37) and the Church website). If anyone saw anything untoward or anybody acting suspiciously near the church between about 2.30 and 3.30pm on Saturday 7 June, they are urged to get in touch with Sussex Police. I hope you find the magazine interesting and useful and, as usual, I would love to hear from you with any comments or suggestions. The magazine can also be viewed on line at: http://www.wisboroughgreenparishchurch.org.uk/index.php/parish-magazine Roland Zilz

Letters to the Editor Mr Zilz, I would like to thank you and all the people who help in the editing, collating, illustrating and distribution of the Wisborough Green magazine. I can only imagine the time and effort you all give in order to create such a successful publication. I particularly admire Trudy Emberson, Headteacher, for finding time to write yet another report: very interesting for those of us who have no direct connection with the School. Yours sincerely, Geraldine Hincks

Handbells Concert On Thurs 10th July at 8pm in Kirdford Village Hall there will be a concert by KIPHRA (the Kirdford, Ifold & Plaistow Hand be ll Ri ng ers As s oc iat ion , pronounced Kiffra). Nature Notes A couple of weeks ago I came across a bird’s wing on the ground beneath one of the feeders. Oh dear, a blackbird, I thought, but on closer inspection I saw some white stripes and realised it had to be one of our pair of greater spotted woodpeckers. Almost certainly a sparrowhawk had taken it. But a lone rather tragic wing doesn’t tell us much. Was it the male or the female? That was answered later in the day when the male came down to feed. We knew there were probably young by now, so watched anxiously whenever he appeared. Several days later a juvenile flopped onto the tree by that same feeder. The father winkled out a nut, tucked it into a joint of the tree, then broke it up and fed the baby. We were almost moved to tears by his tender and delicate care of the youngster with its bright red forehead. Since then another baby has come down, and they are now both picking, more or less successfully, at the feeders for themselves. A happy outcome, and also, let’s not forget, a good meal for the sparrowhawk brood too. Nature has its checks and balances, doesn’t it. Another survival story here with a brood of jackdaws inside the square cowl on top of our chimney. We don’t know how they managed to get in and out, and we certainly don’t know how they survived the fire our family lit (just back from holiday and feeling the cold one chilly day!) I had forgotten to mention our lodgers and it burned for three or four hours before I got home. In spite of heat and smoke, we heard faint cheeping again the next evening. The noise level gradually increased, and two weeks later they all squeezed out and away in a flurry of scrabbling and squawking, and peace returned to our fire place. A pair of red kites have been seen close up by friends in Bedham, swooping around over a field of newly cut grass, and moorhen chicks and tawny owls in a garden woodland closer to home. The tawnies are welcomed back after a two-year absence. I also had a call from someone on the A272 about two deer in the field that’s earmarked for houses. They were there for several days - a stag and a doe, maybe even a baby tucked into the grass. (Let’s hope it’s not their last chance to graze there) I’m always delighted to hear of any sightings. Roland often kindly passes them on.. Here, a jay has returned – it’s been many years since one appeared. Such a handsome bird. It was after peanuts too – on the ground this time. It flew off over our small wildflower meadow which is now looking lovely. It’s into the second year and a real delight. Highly recommended – whatever size the patch! PS Sad to relate that the rabbit babies ate all the veg in that Kidford Road garden - while their rescuers were away on holiday! Checks and balances again!! Sue J 11

Parish Council News Update Oil & Gas Application Update Celtique Energie eventually provided the additional information to WSCC. This information has been on consultation, with comments being required by 20th June 2014. The Parish Council has again submitted an objection as there were no fundamental changes in the additional information provided by Celtique that would make the proposal acceptable to the village. At the time of writing, the application is scheduled to be determined by committee on Tuesday 22nd July 2014. As we’ve previously highlighted, notifying residents of impending deadlines is often difficult, so please refer to the village website (www.wisboroughgreen.org) or the Keep Kirdford and Wisborough Green website (www.no-drilling.co.uk) to be kept fully informed.

Neighourhood Plan Update Your Council has been progressing as fast as possible with final site selection for the Plan period of 15 years, but as you will appreciate, the oil and gas application has been a concern that has also taken a considerable amount of councillor time. Having consulted extensively with the village, it was always going to be necessary to take professional planning advice. This has now been done with CDC planning officers and with consultants engaged by the Parish Council to help us. The result is obviously a compromise between village wishes on the one hand and professional planning advice and regulation on the other. It had been the Council’s intention to have an additional informal consultation this month, but as the village is in a vulnerable position, we have been advised to proceed to a formal consultation on a draft Plan in the autumn. This is simply because it is in the interests of the Parish to have its Neighbourhood Plan in place as soon as practically possible, to protect ourselves from unwanted development.

Rydon Homes – Land South of Meadowbank You may be aware that an outline planning application has been made for 25 houses on a Greenfield site off the A272 west of the village. The Parish Council has objected to this on the grounds of prematurity to our Neighbourhood Plan and on the size of the development, as well as concerns over access and traffic. We have been informed that this will be going to the Planning Committee for determination on Wednesday 23 rd July, so if you feel that this proposal is inappropriate for the village, we would strongly encourage you to be in attendance; a show of strength of feeling in the village may help. Further details will be put on the village website when known.

Gatwick Airport – Flight Path Consultation Many of you may have noticed an increase in air traffic and noise over the past few months, which we have been informed is a 6 month trial! We highlighted in the last newsletter the consultation by Gatwick Airport regarding the possible second runway, and the likely implications for the village in terms of increased air traffic and noise over the village. 12

Parish Council News Update (Cont) We have now been informed that Gatwick Airport has launched a 12 week consultation on their plans to redraw many of the flight paths around Gatwick and on the specific effects of low altitude options for new routes; the document is at: www.gatwickairport.com/gatwickairspaceconsultation Any changes could have a significant impact upon the enjoyment of our village so please take a look and submit comments by Friday 15th August 2014. If the aircraft noise is getting you down then we do need to make our voices heard. Please telephone the noise complaint line on 0800 393070 or email noise.line@gatwickairport.com putting complaint in the subject line, otherwise it isn’t recorded as such. Also, email our local MP, Nick Herbert (nick@nickherbert.com), to raise this concern at a different level. To be kept up to date, useful information can be found on the Gatwick Airport Conservation Campaign website (www.gacc.org.uk).

Oil/Gas Exploration - KKWG Update May/June proved to be very busy. On May 23rd, the British Geological Society published its report about the Weald….and they had found NO gas and what oil exists to be rather thick and viscous and probably difficult to recover. According to the report, the Weald shales do not meet many of the criteria for a successful shale oil development, or there is no data with which to make an assessment. Professor Andrew Aplin, Durham University, said: “We might estimate that 1% of the Weald oil resource might be recoverable.” This would equate to 0.05 billion barrels, which is about two months of UK consumption. So if that happened it would be at the expense of this wonderful area of the Weald and at the expense of continuing to wreck the climate. If you recall we need to wean ourselves off such energy supplies. On May 30th a very successful Information Session was held in the Village Hall was attended by some 100 people. Local resident Sue Jameson steered a lively and enjoyable meeting through landscape issues with consultant Martin Small, Geological concerns with John Diggens and the impact on a village with Sue Taylor a resident from Balcombe. Sue worked as a Chartered Accountant until she found out about the impacts of the decisions made on her doorstep, left work and has taken up fighting the industry full time. She urged those present that the industry needed to be stopped now or they would not go away. John was able to tell us things about the area we never knew. Apparently there are many faults in the ground beneath our feet and these are not good news for anyone trying to drill because they can contribute to earth tremors and/or to the liquids put down the well coming back into local water supplied. Martin outlined the application, the site and its setting within the envelope of the South Downs helpfully pointing out relevant considerations on the way. As people left they were handed postcards so they could send in Objections to WSCC before the deadline of June 20th and these were distributed to every house in both Kirdford and Wisborough Green. WSCC informed us on May 24th that they were intending to hold an Information Session about Oil/Gas with representatives from the regulatory bodies in Pulborough Village Hall on June 21st. Do drop in and let them know what you think. Cont over...........

Oil/Gas Exploration - KKWG Update (Cont) The IMPORTANT dates in July are the Planning meeting of the South Downs National Park taking place on JULY 10TH where the Celtique Energie application at Fernhurst will be decided, and, JULY 22ND when the Kirdford/Wisborough Green application will be decided by the WSCC Planning Committee. It would be good to have as many local residents attending those meetings as possible and holding our Councillors to account…..after all they are meant to be representing us. A petition has been set up on the West Sussex website calling on WSCC to declare West Sussex a “Frack Free Zone” in line with evidence presented in a report drawn up in March by the RSPB amongst others. The report advocates that there are areas of high ecological value where water supplies are limited and that these should not be considered for Oil/Gas Exploration or Exploitation. Paper versions of the petition are available in both villages – café, pubs, public toilets or community shop – or you should be able to access (and sign!) it at http://epetition.westsussex.public-i.tv/epetition_core/ view/Fracking. The petition closes on July 20th just prior to the KWG decision meeting. 3,000 signatures are needed to ensure that the full Council has to debate the issue. THANK you to all those who have helped in this very busy period and particularly to those who have taken time to object to this quite unnecessary proposal to wreck the special area of the Weald which we all regard as home and where we value our villages, our Green, our community, the landscape, the wildlife, the tranquillity and the dark skies! Wisborough Green Primary School News Apart from the rather inclement weather, the children are very much enjoying the summer term focus on Seven Wonders of the World. Our KS1 children have taken this on a slightly different tangent and are learning about animals from around the world. The children went to Marwell Zoo recently to further enhance their learning and were full of excitement at the wonderful collection of animals they had seen. Our KS2 children will be going to the British Museum in July, to further research the Seven Wonders of the World. We do try to ensure that the children go on a visit with school during the school year but, as I am sure you can imagine, the cost involved in taking them out of school can be prohibitive. Also, the time it can take to get to venues sometimes means that the children do not get very much time there. Parents are asked for voluntary contributions to help out and our fantastic PTA have been supporting these visits throughout the year to keep costs to a minimum. If we didn’t receive these top-ups, it would be very difficult to offer these additional extras. We do invite visitors to school, if we can’t arrange a trip out; The Owls and the Forensic Science Team were particular hits this year! Our Summer Fayre, which was themed around the whole school learning journey, was a lovely day. Apart from a very heavy downpour at around 2pm (which the children rather enjoyed on the whole) the stalls were busy and the atmosphere was lovely. This is our main fund-raising event of the year and is so well supported by local businesses and the village as a whole. We really appreciate all the support we get as a school, thank you if you have helped in any way. We like to include some of our performances in the Summer Fayre, so that parents and families can see the children’s shows. The Dance-Time performance was originally held at the Hawth Theatre in Crawley. The children need quite a lot of space to perform this so we do like to show this at the Summer Fayre. Also our choir of 12 performed a couple of their songs, having had a very late night the night before from performing with 300 children from the locality schools onstage at the Hawth. We do need to increase our singing club next year, as over 30 children joined the club in the lead up to our performance at the O2 in January! The children sing a mixture of traditional and modern songs, it really is wonderful to hear them singing. This school year has flown by; it is amazing to think that at the time of writing this letter there are only six weeks to go. We have planned lots of events, alongside our rapidly developing building! Our annual end of year production is going ahead in July, on our brand new stage which was kindly funded by our amazing PTA. There are many sporting events planned this term; cricket, dance and hockey in particular. Our sports morning is planned for the 27th June, weather permitting. This is so successful, with all of the children participating at different levels. We try to balance teamwork with some competition as we do have some very talented athletes who are continually working to achieve their personal best. I hope by the time you read this letter, our brand new website will be live. Do have a look, www.wisboroughgreenschool.org.uk. Kind regards, Mrs Trudy Emberson, Headteacher 17

Celebration in Church for Brother Angelo Brother Angelo is a Franciscan Friar who has been taking some of the services in St Peter ad Vincula for both this and previous interregna and Sunday 1 st June marked the 45th anniversary of his ordination as a priest. Over the years Brother Angelo has been an inspiration and much loved member of the church congregation. At the end of the service on 1st June, Dr Graham Parr, one of the churchwardens, gave a short tribute to Brother Angelo saying how he had provided inspiration to the regular congregation as well as to visitors. He reminded us how at times he had challenged us in the ways of our faith in his inimitable down to earth style and had, at times, even made us ‘squirm’ in his challenges, whilst urging us on in our journey of faith however strong that might be. This was followed by a celebration of his 45 years as a priest with some ‘fizz’ and a beautiful cake, made by Andrea Parr and decorated by Val Mourilyan’s daughter, Sophie Winship. The cake included his favourite yellow roses and a wonderful figure of a Franciscan Friar. Both the roses and figure were edible and taken by Brother Angelo to share with his fellow priests at the home for retired clergy Terry’s Cross at Henfield. As a Franciscan Friar, Brother Angelo is not permitted to hold any material possessions (consumable items are allowed!). Our thanks go out to Brother Angelo, who brings Christianity alive and relevant to all of us. Jamie Daniell

Hopefully, normal service will be resumed next month. 1st XI are 4th in league and 2nd XI are 5th. Colts are in full swing and all fixtures are available on the website. WGSCA. Website: www.wisboroughsports.org Nothing to report this month. Stoolball Club. ‘Medals, Trophies ……and the odd ambulance!!’ Another month has past with one league game rained off totally and another only half played due to thunder, lightening and a rapidly flooding pitch!! Hopefully we can reschedule these games soon! Whilst we lost our first home match, the game played away at Clymping was a close run thing….but ended in dramatic fashion. After a good innings by WG to reach 126, (Clare 29 & Sandra 27) Clymping were hot on our heels. As the last over started they needed 5 off 8 balls, but as Jess Macey went for a high ball, she fell badly! After sitting her on a bench & administering lots of TLC and ice she insisted we carry on! Sadly Clymping got the runs needed to win. Jess’s pain & discomfort was such that an ambulance was called. We were slightly concerned when the ambulance driver admitted he had ‘parked’ his ambulance in a ditch earlier in the day & needed towing out….but at least she got to St Richards ok!! A long night was spent at Chichester being administered Morphine, before the conclusion was reached that she had seriously sprained her ankle. GET BETTER SOON, JESS! As well as our league matches the team also are invited to play Tournaments. These take place on Sundays and involve teams of 8 players, rather than 11, playing two sets of ‘round robin’ against other teams. The winners of each set play a final. In the Alfold Tournament in early May, Harriet Macey won the trophy for Individual Catches, and the Team also won Team Catches too! At the end of May a team travelled to Fittleworth. I was visiting London that day but was thrilled to get a message to say they had won their first match….and then their 2nd…and you can guess the 3rd and 4th! The team had progressed to the FINAL against Midhurst….which, after some demon fielding and strong batting, they won by 1 run!!! I heard that there were many celebrations by the team as they received their medals and the Trophy!!…and I think I owe an apology to the people on the train to London because I was cheering too!! Let’s hope this nice weather continues. Clare Steere 22

Wisborough Green History The Butchers Shops in School Road (Cont) I have as many as three corrections to last month's article. Firstly, the house on the corner of School Road and the school lane has changed its name from St. George's House to Bramshaw House. Secondly, William, the manager of Lerwills butcher shop in Petworth, was Sam Peacock's brother and not Alfred Lerwill's. And thirdly, the caption of the Lerwill Brothers shop c1935 was wrong. It should have read (from left to right) Peter Budd (?), Phyllis Streeter (office worker), Bert Speed (from the Petworth shop who assisted with the slaughtering), Cecil Mann (assistant butcher) and Sam Peacock (manager and butcher). Ownership of the business changed when Sam Peacock, the manager, acquired the Lerwills Butchers shop in c1945, but otherwise things continued as before. The Petworth shop also continued but owned and managed by Bert Speed, the slaughterer. Around 1958, the business passed to Sam's son Denzil. The normal range of meats sold was beef (inc Argentine beef), lamb (inc New Zealand lamb) and pork. During the war and up to 1954 when some meat was scarce and rationed, the shop sold rabbits. They worked their way around Pallingham Farm and Quay with ferrets every Monday hoping to catch enough rabbits to sell for the rest of the week. Every week from c1948 to c1953 they sold two boxes of fish (one wet and one smoked); these were collected from Billingshurst station after they had arrived by train from Grimsby.. They also sold some tinned food and brawn, though this latter meat went off quickly as the shop didn't have a freezer room, only a cold store. The business sold roughly a third of its meat in the shop and two thirds using the van delivery. Three vans were used for deliveries; these were on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday and half a day on Wednesdays. Concluded next month. RB

Wisborough Green The perfume of a thousand roses filled the air as a dozen gardens opened their gates to 400 visitors strolling around Wisborough Green in bright sunshine. The occasion was the annual and increasingly popular Open Garden Weekend on 7th and 8th June. Dawn on the Saturday morning had threatened a miserable day, but as one optimistic lady retold the old saying: "Rain before Seven, Fine before Eleven" her forecast came true and the sun broke through the heavy clouds right on time, and the rest of the weekend was just perfect. The theme had been set to commemorate the start of World War One and many gardens displayed exhibits from that era. The ticket tent was so camouflaged that one visitor could not find it! Red poppies were in bloom everywhere and a number of helpers dressed in appropriate costume.

There were a few other attractions too: a farrier worked at the ancient forge by the Green; a potter threw her clay in Wendy Duff's tiny studio and two vintage cars, one exactly 100 years old, stood outside Grange Cottage.

Open Gardens 2014 On the terrace at Homelea, teas, cakes and sticky buns disappeared at an astonishing rate whilst Pimms was served in the gentle atmosphere above the croquet lawn at The Elms. The summer we have waited so long for graced Wisborough Green at last and everyone went away happy. Peter Edmonds

Do you like to meet new people, have fun and do something good at the same time? Well why not help to man a stall at the Wisborough Green August Bank Holiday Fete – Monday 25th August 2014. This is not an onerous task; you share the afternoon with other helpers so there is still plenty of time to look around the fete and flower & craft show. It really is good fun and an excellent opportunity to meet new people and make new friends. On top of this refreshments are provided for all helpers! So if you fancy giving it a go, even if you can only offer an hour or two, we would love to hear from you. We are also looking for donations for the Hoopla Stall, so if you are not able to help on the day, maybe you could donate a suitable Hoopla prize. Boxes of chocolates, wine, soft drinks and small gifts are ideal. To find out more or to volunteer/donate a prize please contact Louise on 700689 or email clerk@wisboroughgreenpc.org 29

Recipe of the Month CHEAT’S CARAMEL MOUSSE This is both quick and easy but gives the impression that you have spent hours on the creation! Serves 4 Ingredients: 1 tablespoon milk 3 x 62.5g Mars Bars (or Snicker Bars if preferred), thinly sliced 300ml (1/2pt) double cream, lightly whipped Decoration: 4 tablespoons double cream, whipped 8 Maltesers Method: Put the milk and Mars Bars slices in a heatproof bowl. Melt over hot water or in the microwave for about 3-4 minutes, stirring halfway through, until smooth and completely melted. Don’t use water that is too hot as the chocolate will go lumpy, very little heat is needed. Set aside to cool a little. Fold the whipped cream into the caramel mixture and spoon into four size 1 ramekins or glasses. Transfer to the fridge to set for about an hour for a soft set, or overnight for a firmer set. Decorate just before serving with a blob of whipped cream topped with Maltesers, half or whole. Richard V

Wisborough Greenfingers Tips Cherish those corners left “wild”. Insects and moths will thrive and more birds will visit.  Treasure those five minutes spent in the garden each day when enjoyment comes in often unexpected ways and creative thoughts happen.  Enjoy the perfumes and odours of plants and flowers. They are so fleeting. 

Farmers’ and Village Market News

Next Market Thursday 10th July 2014 Village Hall 9 am – 12.30 pm There is a possibility that a goat farmer may be coming to the Market with goat milk produce. John Cooper from Coldwaltham is starting up this different farming venture. We wait with interest. Our supplier of organic vegetables spoke of their own produce being brought in when ready. He is a carrot connoisseur, reeling off varieties and saying which were most flavourful for nibbling raw and which needed cooking to bring out the flavour. The May Market Voucher was won by a vanished shopper. We have their phone number but cannot catch them in. Sally Aquilina of The Old Mill Cafe picked the mystery one out. Sally and her husband Alfredo have been very helpful in promoting the Market recently. The June Market Voucher was won by Sue Jameson, a great supporter of the Market. This was drawn by James Halfhide of Imbhams Farm Granary, who has a terrific selection of home grown cereal products from flours to breakfast muesli and oats to a great variety of breads. See for yourselves. Wisborough Green Farmers and Village Market Committee

Wisborough Green Horticultural Society A breathing space at last. The June Show is complete when you read this but at the time of writing it has not even happened! The August Show is nearly in two months time, so no pressure then! But we all know it takes time and care for plants to develop to their fullness, so active gardening needs to be done.

Latest news: Local outing to Fittleworth House gardens is on 7th August from 2.30 till 5pm. The gardener Mark Saunders will give us a guided tour so we will get a much deeper appreciation of how it has developed plus any amount of horticultural detail that we want. Tea in the potting shed is included in the cost of £5.50. Interesting! Please contact Philip on 01403 700402 if you would like to come as we need to know numbers. We will meet at the Village Hall at 2pm to do a bit of car sharing – not much space at all for parking there. Aija Hamilton 39

Weather Watch Wisborough Green Rainfall for May was 77mm (last year 72mm – 6 yr average was 49.3mm) Wettest place in the UK was Capel Curig, Conwy 212mm Highest temp for the UK 26.3°C at Heathrow, London – the lowest recorded was -5.0°C at Cromdale, Morayshire. Sunshine levels were 11% below average. An excellent Spring with little frost and plenty of moisture for plant growth. Here’s hoping for a good summer with rain at regular intervals and preferably at night!! Weathervane

Recent Weather Phenomena On Sunday 8th June we had spectacular cirrus clouds in the sky accompanied by an optical phenomenon. A portion of a circumhorizontal arc (sometimes known as a fire rainbow) was clearly visible below the sun. This is caused by light refracted through ice crystals in those thin cirriform clouds. Amazing! Photo by Nathan Stride.

The following weekend (13 / 14 June) saw spectacular thunderstorms hit Wisborough Green. Peter Edmonds captured, from his bedroom window, the picture left showing some impressive lightning over the village.
