Pastoral Letter We all like surprises, don’t we? Well I suppose some of us like some surprises anyway. I got a surprise at 6.45pm on 13 th May, just about 24 hours before the deadline for this issue of Ad Vincula. “I know it’s short notice,” our Churchwarden said, “but I wonder if you………” And so here I am writing the Pastoral Letter this month.

My life has been full of surprises, unexpected turns of events, some big, some small, all sorts of happenings and one or two of them, like this letter, giving me very little time to think. A prime example of this was the four weeks’ notice that the baby we were expecting fifty odd years ago were in fact two! Our lives changed not a little then, but imagine an event that was to be even more life-changing for us all.

For more than thirty years, one member of our family was vehemently critical of religion and he had created a powerful barrier between himself and the God he denied; however his day-to-day behaviour seemed to belie this. We all prayed that one day he would be able to see things differently. His daughter’s faith, and chosen free church, meant that he would drive her backwards and forwards each Sunday and, in addition I suspect, it was warmer on occasions sitting in the church rather than outside in the car.

And so he heard the gospel preached week after week and he met so many good Christian folk and heard about their works. Then, suddenly, came the “road to Damascus” experience closely followed by a public, total immersion, baptism. Now he runs a Christian charity caring for those who are unable to support themselves.

We were to learn from this that we should never be surprised when God answers our prayers.

Church Notices BUILDING PROJECT Work commenced on the planned external works in May. This includes the drainage for the re-ordering in church, enlarged turning circle by the North porch and new lighting down the steps by the workhouse wall.

Great care will be taken to ensure that there is no disturbance to the graves by the side of the steps and path, but if any relatives wish to talk to Helen (700567) or Graham (700793) regarding this matter, please don't hesitate to contact one of us. This work will inevitably cause some disruption, but we will endeavour to minimise the effect for all those using the church or walking through the churchyard. We ask for your patience and understanding. Thank you.

PATRONAL FESTIVAL - 29th June After the 10.30am service a buffet lunch will be served in church for those who wish to enjoy a time of fellowship together. There is no set price for this, but a small donation towards the cost of the food would be appreciated. Please do put it in your diary and come and join us. Everyone is welcome.

CHAIN OF PRAYER Worried about a loved one, a friend or yourself and would like prayers to be said by a chain of people? Contact Wendy 700295 or Gillian 700157 and they will start the chain by contacting the person next to them on the list and so it goes all the way round. A copy of the chain is on the notice board at the back of church.

Prayer is a powerful and important part of life and one should never under estimate it's effect. You don't need to give any details of the problem just ask for prayers to be said and it will happen. Please note that it will be treated with total confidentiality..

VILLAGE CAR SCHEME If you, or anyone you know of, needs transport to get to a hospital, dentist or doctor's appointment please contact Jennie Burr on 700607 who will arrange for someone to drive you there.

More drivers are still needed to help with this service. If you can spare half a day a month, please contact Jennie Burr on 700607. Thank you.

PASTORAL CARE DURING THE INTERREGNUM It is important for the Parish to be aware that during the interregnum there is still pastoral support for those who need it. Members of the Healing Group, Village Care Team, Prayer Groups and Social Development Team have come together under one umbrella to work as one, providing prayer and care where required.

Communication and co-operation is crucial for this to work effectively, so if you hear of anyone who is in need of a Vicar, is ill, coming out of hospital, lonely, moving into the village or just in need of some kind words or prayers, please call Gillian Gough on 700157 and she will contact the relevant person.

Regular Church Activities PRAYER GROUP AND QUIET MORNINGS If anyone would like to spend half an hour in fellowship and prayer then they are most welcome at Wendy’s house (2 Clockhouse) on a Tuesday at 4.30, when prayers are said for the life of the Parish.

On the third Friday of every month Quiet Mornings are held at the homes of Wendy Duff and Alison Jekyll at 10.30am. It is a peaceful time when you can relax, recharge your batteries and listen to music, poetry, readings and prayers. You will come away refreshed and ready to carry on! WIZZY TOTS Wizzy Tots, Wisborough Green’s baby and toddler group, meets at the Village Hall from 9.30 to 11.30 am on most Fridays during term time.

This month we meet on Fridays 13th, 20th and 27th June.

Please join us for a coffee, catch up and a play in the Village Hall, all children and parents/carers welcome. It would be lovely to see you all.

From the Editor Welcome to the June edition of Ad Vincula.

In addition to the usual articles this month, we have a brief report on Roger Moorey’s funeral and a report on the Annual UNLOCK Walk (both on page 11). We also have an update on the Oil/Gas Exploration Planning Application (p15). Lots going on in June as you will see from the various posters advertising events but two in the village are worth highlighting - The Open Gardens Weekend, 7 & 8 June (p24) and The School Summer Fayre, 14 June (p25).

Roger Moorey (1947 - 2014) The Funeral Service to celebrate the life of Roger Moorey was held on Tuesday 6 May 2014. The packed church (standing room only) was a clear indication of the love and respect for a man that cared so much about others and, in particular, did so much to help the young people of our village. A proper tribute will appear in a future edition but, for now, Judy has a personal message below.

Judy, Katie, Pete and family want to thank everyone for their overwhelming love and support following Roger's death. We loved him so much and his send off on 6 May with jazz band was a tremendous testament to his life.

Annual UNLOCK Walk - 3rd May 2014 A depleted but enthusiastic band of nine plus Barney the dog set off from Wisborough Green just after 7am on Saturday 3 May - destination St Pancras, London. At the first church in the Caledonian Road, we were joined by four others (Pete, Esther and Oscar Moorey and Judy’s friend Sandra).

The weather was kind to us and we enjoyed a gentle walk calling at eight churches along the way in the company of hundreds of other walkers. The route encompassed parts of Camden and Kentish Town with the last part of the walk taking us through Primrose Park (with a side trip up Primrose Hill to admire the fantastic panoramic views across London) and along the Regents Canal past the busy Camden Locks and Camden Market. - a total of 9.5 miles.

This year’s walk is dedicated to the memory of our dear friend Roger Moorey who, with his wife Judy, organised and led these walks for over 25 years.

Thanks to the generous sponsorship of many parishioners and friends, we raised £355 to contribute to Unlock’s work in deprived urban areas across the UK. Roland Zilz Relaxing in Primrose Park - only 2 miles to go!

Nature Notes Several of us took a leisurely walk in Northup Copse among the bluebells the other day, and were delighted to find a lot of orchids. Sturdy pinkish spikes of Early Purple Orchids were gleaming among the haze of blue.

Haven’t the bluebells been amazing this year – they must like the early rains! Another fascinating new flower on my list is the green Twayblade. I’d never heard of it and would have passed it without even realising it was an orchid. Luckily we were with a smart botanist who stopped and drew our attention to it. It has two big broad bottom leaves and then a skinny stalk emerges bearing an incredibly delicate green flower. I’ll be looking out for it again.

There are more orchids around this year – including the usual one on a roadside verge quite near to us. I await the sound of the council mower so I can dash out and save it again! Hope it’ll be the same driver. He was very careful last year. And another one has popped up on the edge of our garden! Do orchids behave like plants in warmer climes that can sit dormant underground and only come up when the rains arrive? We’ve been here more than 30 years and I’ve never seen it before.

Talking of unusual arrivals in gardens, someone living in the Kirdford Rd had a surprise when working on her veg patch. She dug up quite a big sedum plant and as she lifted it out a movement in the earth stopped her short. The veg bed is next to their compost heap, so she immediately thought it must be a rat’s nest. Then, as she watched the soil fall away, she counted four tiny baby rabbits. She gently pushed back the earth and put a cover over the whole thing. At time of writing the babies are still there – three weeks old approximately- and when anyone sneaks a peep they scurry off down the burrow and out of sight. It looks as if the parent burrowed in under the compost heap from the field behind. A perfect residence right next to a constant food supply!

The pheasant population here is still expanding .Our chum is back in the garden and a truce seems to have been declared. I’m now greeted by him first thing in the morning, closely followed by the robin. The robin comes into the utility room if I keep him waiting, and there’s a chaffinch at the top of the drive who shouts at me until the seeds are scattered! I sometimes wonder how I spent my time before I got keen on birds. The pheasant is now followed about by one smart rook, who knows where I put the dried fruit, and after him comes a lone squirrel. They will have to go elsewhere for their winter store, after the sad loss of our lovely old walnut tree during the recent storms.

NB We still have some sizeable pieces of walnut wood if anyone would like some.

Oil/Gas Exploration in Sussex - An Update Wisborough Green / Kirdford The second round of Consultation for the Celtique Energie application for an Oil/Gas Exploratory well proposed at land near Boxal Bridge in Kirdford on the border of Wisborough Green Parish has now begun. Further information in response to a letter from WSCC has been received and is available to view on their Planning Portal: http://buildings.westsussex.gov.uk/ePlanningOPS/loadFullDetails.do?aplId=1599 A second consultation deadline has been set (initially 5 June but extended to 20 June) and further objections can now be made to the application - by email or letter to WSCC quoting reference: - WSCC/083/13/KD. KKWG will be running an Information Session about the issues raised. It will be held in Wisborough Green Village Hall on Friday 30th May 7 - 9.30 pm. People with specialist knowledge about the local Geology, Water supplies, Planning and the Oil/Gas industry will be invited so you can ask the questions you've always wanted answered. Watch the KKWG website or ring Jill 01403 700395 for further info.

On 11 May, members of KKWG were interviewed by Professor Iain Stewart as to why people are objecting to fracking here in the UK. It was for an 8 minute contribution to a BBC Newsnight programme planned to be broadcast in a fortnight's time - so it may have already aired by the time you read this.

If you want to know more about the local application call in at the monthly Wisborough Green Farmer’s market and there will be someone available to answer any queries you may have.

Landowners in the vicinity of the proposed application site can register at Wrong Move if they do not wish the company to explore under their land. While the Prime Minister is wishing to introduce legislation in the next Parliament which would make it possible for any fracking company to enter any land at any time it is not yet law and such a proposal is likely to be strongly resisted.

Watch out for the Folk Against Fracking musical event to be held at Loxwood Parish Hall on October 25th. .

Other Applications Celtique also replied to questions from the South Downs National Park (SDNP) about their application at Fernhurst and that second round of consultation is underway with a meeting being held by the SDNP Planning Committee to determine the application on July 10th. See the FrackFreeFernhurst website for guidance on how to object and the issues of pressing concern – transport and access; loss of amenity and environmental concerns. Comments must include the reference: SDNP/13/05896/CM WSCC Minerals Planning Committee met on April 29th in Horsham to consider the latest application from Cuadrilla to appraise its findings at the Balcombe well site. The outcome was 12 votes for the proposal and 1 against. The decision was made in spite of huge opposition and very cogent objections made at the meeting by members of FEBRA and the Vice Chair of the Parish Council Jill Sutcliffe, KKWG, 01403 700395 15

Wisborough Green Primary School News Work is now well underway with the new extension. As I write this month’s letter, the brick walls are beginning to take shape. It has been quite a mission to get this far, as we have relied on support from West Sussex County Council to do the work for us and the end is finally in sight! We are really pleased with the contractors; they are obviously used to working with schools.

The children are enjoying being able to see the building take shape and are particularly excited by the large lorries that have been delivering the materials. We have, understandably, had to make a few changes to how we organise the school day but we have a great team here and everything is running smoothly.

The Summer Term is always a busy time of the year, with many whole school and community events planned. Our Summer Fayre is on Saturday 14th June; you are very welcome to join us on the green as usual. The PTA have been getting ready for this year’s Fayre, which has been planned around the theme of ‘Seven Wonders of the World,’ so it promises to be a fun afternoon.

Our Learning Journey for the term is ‘Seven Wonders of the World’ in KS2 and the children will be visiting the British Museum later this term to find out more about the wonders they have been studying. Our Reception and KS1 children are engrossed in our ‘Wonderful World.’ The teachers have been so impressed by how well travelled the children are as they are bringing in some fantastic resources and artefacts to share with their class. KS1 are going to Marwell Zoo in June to see the animals from around the world that they have been learning about.

The Year 6 children have worked hard on their tests recently. They are formally assessed at the end of KS2 to see how ready they are for secondary school. The children have taken this very seriously and have really worked hard to revise for the tests. They have done their very best and we are very proud of all of them. They are looking forward to finding out how well they have done!

Sports Day (or morning) has become a great family event at the school. We begin by organising the whole school into our four teams; Red, Green, Blue and Yellow. This means all of the teams are made up of children from every year group and the children can be with their siblings. They work together as teams on different challenges to earn points. After this, the children will have the opportunity to run in individual races, depending on the year group. We introduced a mini marathon last year which involved the children running several times around the field and they loved it! Once all of the points are added up, we then announce the overall winning team, who then embark on a victory parade around the school field. We try to combine some competition but the emphasis is very much on teamwork. Our new Team Leaders will be working hard to improve their team’s skills throughout the Summer Term. Our KS2 children will be taking part in District Sports, athletics events, later in the term. This involves other schools from Horsham and surrounding areas and we have historically performed very well in these.

As half term approaches (already – this has been a very short term so far!) we are looking forward to the challenges that the second half of the term will undoubtedly bring.

The Wisborough Green Sports Page Football Club. Season is complete and the 1st team have finished a disappointing 6th in the league with the 2nd XI finishing joint 3rd on points. Congratulations to Forest FC and West Chiltington Reserves for winning the leagues this year.

Cricket Club. The season has started and along with it the RAIN!

The 1st XI have started the league season by losing to Henfield on the opening Saturday. Henfield scored 154 with Wisborough Green’s Ben Thatcher the pick of the bowlers taking 6 Wickets and then, despite an encouraging and promising start with the bat, we collapsed to 135 all out having been 115 for 5 at one stage before the trigger happy umpire decided he wanted to go home having been rushing on and off the field for rain all afternoon.

The 2nd XI first game was cancelled at Henfield due to a wet wicket..

The 1st XI have travelled to East Sussex in the last couple of weeks results are available on the play cricket (www.wisboroughgreencc.co.uk) or the Wisborough Green (www.wisboroughgreen.org) web sites.

Colts cricket was affected at the beginning of May by the bad weather but, hopefully, they will have played several games by the time you read this article. Games are being played on the Green and at Collards field most evenings and weekends. Stoolball Club. Stoolball season is slowly starting in West Sussex. As you can imagine we are dictated by the weather and the recent rain 17 May - u14 Team after beating has meant some very soggy pitches! Last year West Chiltington our fixtures were regularly moved, but we are hoping this year is better! Our team is made up of a mixture of players aged from 14 to.....well let’s just say there are certain eras of music that we remember!! The matches are played on a Monday and Wednesday and

by County rules have to start by 6.45pm. So, for all members of the team that work it can be hard to get to venues like Angmering, Stedham and Eastergate in time.

Nevertheless, we are very proud that we still have a team that is enthusiastic and willing to play, when so many other clubs have now folded.

So far this season we have played two matches; we won the friendly against Kirdford a couple of weeks ago. Sadly we lost the league match against Eastergate, despite accidentally dislocating one of their players fingers and giving another a black eye....who said this sport was just hitting a ball with a funny shaped bat!!!!??

The Wisborough Green Sports Page (Cont) WGSCA. Not much to report. Plans to redevelop the pavilion are still being discussed and we are waiting for the drainage to be sorted before the grass patio is fitted at the front. The repairs to the football pitch have been completed and look good.

Touch Rugby. Touch rugby has started on a Tuesday and Thursday evening and 3 of the players are doing a triple triathlon challenge to raise money for Charity. (Please see article below).

Local Lads to attempt 3 Triathlons in 24 Hours On June 6th this year, 4 Wisborough Green locals Andy Burbridge, Jon Finn, Philip Maggs and Anton Jerges will set off on a quest to race 3 triathlons in 24 hours. To make the task slightly more challenging the 3 events will take place in three different countries, the first in the foothills of Snowdonia Wales, the second in the marvellous Lake District and the 3rd in Scotland with the swim taking place in what is known to be Scotland’s deepest and coldest lake.

Andy Burbridge, spokesman for the 4 explained why they were taking on the challenge ‘It is something Anton and I have wanted to complete for a couple of years now but what we needed was a little push’. Andy explained that this was gamely provided by another local, Sam Dominique who was looking to raise £8,000 for St. Georges Hospital. ‘Sam’s daughter spent over 18 months in the hospital and Sam was blown away by the care, compassion and love the staff showed her daughter despite very little resource and funding. When they left the hospital Sam vowed to try and give something back to the team that supported her so ably on such little resource. There is a fantastic piece of equipment that will help the team work with children with similar difficulties to Sam’s daughter. It's a portable interactive sensory learning/play tool called the magic carpet. (www.sensoryguru.com/magiccarpet)’ So on Friday June 6th, the intrepid team will set off (ably supported by 2 other local Wizzy Green lads, Mike Gadd and Matt Dronsfield) to take the challenge full on – hoping to finish some 22.5 hours later in Scotland.

‘We have had amazing support so far, raising over 3.5K in sponsorship’ explains team member Anton, ‘We have been supported by locals, friends and families plus an enormously kind donation from local estate agent Knight Frank in Horsham who have donated £1000 to the fund’. We need more though – we have the full £8,000 in our sight and we would love to rustle up more local support’.

Wisborough Green History The Butchers Shops in School Road Firstly, a correction to the caption to the lower photograph in last month's issue. The postcard view dated c1895 certainly shows the pond and windmill, but they were not the intended subject in this instance. Balchin's barn that housed his workshop is the building on the skyline with the peaked gable. The photographic shop, and to which Balchins showroom was later attached, borders the main road and is painted white.

The first recorded instance of a butchers shop in School Road was in 1840 according to Pigot's Directory. This was located in the dwellings known as 1 and 2 High Barn; the plot was much larger than it is today; It was bordered by School Lane and Churchgates with the school garden to the rear. The business was owned by Joseph Grinstead.

Joseph Grinstead died in the 1870s and so his son, also named Joseph, ran the business. His wife ran the business from 1909 and by 1920 until the late 1920s it was run by F Grinstead of whom nothing else is known.

The business was acquired by Alfred Lerwill in the late 1920s and was known as Lerwill Brothers. Alfred owned Pallingham Quay Farm. His son Guy, who owned Pallingham Farm, dealt with everyday matters. The shop was managed by Sam Peacock who lived there with his family who helped with the business. He also employed a butcher, Cecil Mann, and a part time delivery driver. Alfred also owned two other butchers shops, viz. in Petworth (run by Alfred's brother William) and Alfold.

Alfred donated part of the land to the parish council in the mid 1930s so that a new village hall could be built upon it. This piece of land went from just north of High Barn Cottage up to School Lane. A village hall had been proposed for some time, certainly from 1932. A classic single-storey 1930s design was prepared and would have faced School Road on the site of the present St. George's House. The plans gained momentum immediately after the war which resulted in a fund raising committee being set up in 1945 with Sidney Carter as promoter and called the Welcome Home Village Hall Building Committee. For reasons unknown, the proposed hall didn't materialise.

One effect of the hall not being built was that the butchers had to pay a shilling a year rent for use of the land that had been theirs!

The shop occupied the right-hand portion of High Barn. Immediately to the right and behind, an extension to the shop was the slaughterhouse; a small bullock pen was behind this. Next to the right was a small yard, fronted by a small garage. Then came a sheep pen and pig sty and finally, at the extreme right, a barn used as a garage for three cars that later became Churchgates Barn. Behind these was a large chicken run.

To the extreme left, and parallel with the lane, was a scout hut and classroom close by the orchard and pond. This was replaced c1954 by a school canteen; this was brought about because of the closure of the canteen on the ground floor of the present village hall.

Recipe of the Month MANGO CHICKEN Perfect for a cold buffet in the Summer, and if made a day ahead and kept in the fridge, allows the flavours to really infuse into the chicken.

Serves 8 – 10

Ingredients 750g (1 ¾ lb) fresh cooked chicken meat, without bone Salt and freshly ground pepper

Mango Sauce 2 large mangoes, peeled 8 mild peppadew peppers, from a jar 6 tablespoons mango chutney 1 x 200ml carton Greek yoghurt 1 tablespoon Chinese five-spice powder Juice of 1 lemon A few drops of Tabasco sauce (optional)

Garnish Fresh salad leaves 2 mild peppadew peppers, thinly sliced Lots of chopped, fresh parsley

Preparation For the sauce, cut the flesh of 1 mango roughly into pieces and put in a food processor. Add the rest of the ingredients and whiz until smooth and blended. Season with salt and pepper.

Cut the chicken into neat pieces and mix with the mango sauce in a mixing bowl. Cut the flesh of the remaining mango into 1cm ( 1/2in) pieces and mix in with the chicken mixture. Taste and check the seasoning.

Spoon the chicken mixture into a dish, decorate with a few salad leaves, and sprinkle over the peppadew slices and parsley. Serve cold.

Latest news: Karen of Woven in the Weald willow products renown wants to keep the presence of organic vegetables in the Market. She is still busy with the designing and making of practical and decorative willow plant support obelisks, baskets and hurdle edgings but feels very strongly about organic produce being available if possible. So small and local is the scale to start with. The carrots are superb (from personal experience).

Our thanks to the Petworth Town Band for providing the music, to Mr. Darcy (the donkey) for leading the procession and to all involved in the arrangements. Wisborough Green Horticultural Society Everyone is invited to The June Horticultural and Craft Show In the Village Hall on 15 June at 2pm and The Visit to Gilbert White's House and Garden, Selbourne Wednesday 25th June.

From near washout to triumph at the Plant Sale on the Little Green.

An enormous thank you to everyone who brought plants and garden sundries and of course the cakes. The Clemens family team deserve a medal for outstanding performance with plant propagation as does Reg of Dahlia fame. Some people came specially for them, having bought them from last year and wanted more.

A terrific turnout of buyers too in view of the weather. We really are hardy perennials.

Without Sally's generosity in donating her sheltered gravel area to harbour us in the boisterous wind, heavens knows the outcome.

We made just about the same amount as last June, which will help to pay the expenses of the June Show. More plants there too, to buy and cakes to eat!

Now to the Show.

It is too late to start the growing but not too late to be looking about to see what is looking especially nice and would fit in to a category in the Schedule (yours or in the Village Shop).

If it is half way decent put it in! Gardeners often tend to feel overcritical of their own plants, but realise that old truth, “Mine are even better than those” when viewing at the Show.

Cooking is always done at the last minute, so there is plenty of last minute time left.

Young artists have got two weeks left as well to complete their work.

Youngsters are more than welcome to enter ANY OTHER Classes in the Show, so put those brownies in or that bunch of flowers from the garden.

Wealden Trefoil Guild Most of the Guild with friends and partners met at the Capital Theatre in Horsham on May 10th for an amazing performance of Strictly Come Dancing with Stars, Pasha and Katya and 2 other brilliant dance couples. They were ably backed up by a local Dance Troupe Fi Steps who performed in both halves of the performance, whose youngest dancer was only 7 years old.

On Tuesday May 20th a few members and Guiders attended Girlguiding Sussex West Annual Review in the Barons Hall Arundel Castle.

On May 22nd the Guild had Afternoon Tea in Jackery Vintage Tea Room in aid of the Queen Mothers Clothing Guild, which is an organisation which provides new clothing and linen to only British Charities including Hospitals, Hospices, Nursing Homes and Homeless and Disabled People. Members knit garments for neonatal babies, children and adults throughout the year which are all collected together once a year to be distributed to those in need in early October from St James Palace in London. New garments are eagerly sought after and gratefully received.

Our next meeting will be a visit to RHS Wisley Gardens on Tuesday 3 June.

WI Report May 1st was our Resolution meeting, not the ‘must give up smoking/eating & exercise more’ type of meeting, but when we discuss the resolution that will be put to the Annual Meeting in Leeds in June. The resolution that was put to the group was: “The NFWI notes that three people die every day whilst waiting for an organ transplant. We call on every member of the WI to make their wishes regarding organ donation known, and to encourage their families and friends, and members of their local communities to do likewise” This was duly discussed with some very interesting ideas and comments being made and the meeting agreed to support the resolution. Whilst doing this, wine and nibbles were consumed and we finished off with a ‘ding bat’ quiz. Some members are trying to get their heads around these still!!

Our next meeting will be on the 5th June and Mandy from Smithbrook Kilns is giving a demonstration on decorating ceramics etc. So put your creative heads on and come along.

Over the May Bank Holiday weekend I received an email from BT, my service provider, warning me that I had almost used up my ten gigabytes ration for May. Browsing for 30 hours a month + Watching online TV for four hours a month (like BBC iPlayer) + Streaming video for 6 hours a month (like YouTube) + Downloading one standard definition film a month That's far more than I need - so I rang BT and a very helpful oriental gentleman was quick to sooth my fear that someone was sitting in his car outside my house, downloading all sorts of data using my wireless connection. However, as a precaution he changed my password and transferred me to the accounts department of BT somewhere in Northumbria, judging by the young lady’s accent.

We had a lot of our family with us over that weekend; all had laptops, iphones and other devices, and I downloaded just one catch-up programme on my television. It all added up to a sobering eight gigabytes on the Saturday. The lady advised me to change to unlimited broadband at an extra cost of £2.80 a month. “Let’s do it” I said.

We did, and she left me with some Mozart whilst she actioned the change. When she returned she explained the new deal; the new price she quoted was 6p less than I had been paying before! She could not explain why or how, but if you out there have any ideas, keep them secret please.
