Pastoral Letter As I write this I have just returned from three days in London attending the General Synod (the governing body of the Church of England) for the first time as a member. Finally it looks as though the decision to consecrate women as bishops might be approved at the next meeting in July and the discussions this week were constructive and conducted with a true Christian spirit. While in London I spent some time exploring in the Church House bookshop and I bought a copy of a new book by Dave Tomlinson, an Anglican priest who is now Vicar of St Luke’s in Holloway but some years back founded Holy Joe’s, a church in a pub in Clapham for disaffected churchgoers. The book is called ‘How to be a bad Christian….and a better human being’. He talks about how before they took the name Christian (a word which only occurs three times in the bible!) early followers of Christ were simply known as ‘people of the way’ – people who identified with the way of life Jesus taught and demonstrated. It suggests being part of a journey, rather than part of an organisation, and like Dave Tomlinson I know lots of people who never turn up at church, who struggle with creeds and doctrines, who shrink from the thought of being religious, yet who are very much living their lives in the way of Christ. The author says they would deny being Christians but they are lying through their teeth! They are ‘people of the way.’ He goes on to say that ‘Christianity is about faith, not belief. There is a difference. Faith is about having trust, whereas belief is more akin to having opinions. It’s possible to hold beliefs passionately and to argue about them until the cows come home, without them making a scrap of difference to us. But trust is not about beliefs, creeds, opinions, arguments; it’s more instinctive, more fundamental.’ I find this approach intriguing and want to read more over the next few days. As we approach Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent we will be reminded of the humanity of Jesus as he was tempted in the wilderness just as we are and also of his ultimate faith in God which gave him the strength to move to the cross. It encourages us to think again about God’s infinite love for us and the sacrifice of his Son to demonstrate just how unconditional that love is for us all. Christ’s passion was the kingdom of God – a vision of what the world would be like if God were King instead of rulers and politicians. Dave Tomlinson likens the way that Jesus went about changing the world with what is nowadays known as the ‘butterfly effect’. This is the principle that a small change in one place may have a dramatic effect elsewhere. The idea was developed by Edward Lorenz, a meteorologist, when he tried to explain in the early 1960s why it is hard to make accurate predictions about the weather. In 1972 he published his findings in a paper entitled ‘Predictability: Does the flap of a butterfly’s wings in Brazil set off a tornado in Texas?’ Although it seemed preposterous, his proposals were shown to be completely true and accurate. One of the applications of the butterfly effect is the recognition that decisions or actions we as individuals take, no matter how small, can play a massive role in determining the outcome of our lives and the lives of others. This is why Gandhi’s famous quote, ‘Be the change you want to see in the world’, is so powerful. It shows how one decision to change our personal world or the world of somebody around us can end up transforming society. As we struggle with the floods and storms perhaps it should encourage us all to do more to reduce our carbon footprint, to help those who are in desperate need and to do so by being ‘people of the way’. Dr Graham Parr, Churchwarden 5
Church News THANK YOU! We would like to say a very big thank you to everyone who has continued to help us keep our church running so well whilst we are in this time of Interregnum. There are too many of you to mention individually, but your continued support is much appreciated. Thank you! Helen and Graham
VILLAGE CAR SCHEME If you, or anyone you know of, needs transport to get to a hospital, dentist or doctor's appointment please contact Jennie Burr on 700607 who will arrange for someone to drive you there. More drivers are still needed to help with this service. If you can spare half a day a month, please contact Jennie Burr on 700607. Thank you.
PASTORAL CARE DURING THE INTERREGNUM It is important for the Parish to be aware that during the interregnum there is still pastoral support for those who need it. Members of the Healing Group, Village Care Team, Prayer Groups and Social Development Team all met together to work out a way forward. It was felt that all these groups should come together under one umbrella to work as one, providing prayer and care where required. Gillian Gough very kindly agreed to be co-ordinator putting people in touch with each other. Communication and co-operation is crucial for this to work effectively, so if you hear of anyone who is in need of a Vicar, is ill, coming out of hospital, lonely, moving into the village or just in need of some kind words or prayers, please call Gillian on 700157 and she will contact the relevant person.

Regular Church Activities PRAYER GROUP AND QUIET MORNINGS If anyone would like to spend half an hour in fellowship and prayer then they are most welcome at Wendy’s house (2 Clockhouse) on a Tuesday at 4.30, when prayers are said for the life of the Parish. On the third Friday of every month Quiet Mornings are held at the homes of Wendy Duff and Alison Jekyll at 10.30am. It is a peaceful time when you can relax, recharge your batteries and listen to music, poetry, readings and prayers. You will come away refreshed and ready to carry on! Please contact Wendy Duff 700295 or Alison Jekyll 700243 for details.
ST PETER’S LUNCHEON CLUB St Peter’s Luncheon Club is open to anyone who lives in the village and their guests are welcome. We have a two-course lunch, accompanied by a glass of wine and coffee or tea, costing £4.00 payable at the door. If you are not already on the list and would like to join, please ring Hilary Edmonds on 700623. This month we meet on 20th March at 12.15 for 12.45 in the Village Hall. .
WIZZY TOTS Wizzy Tots has changed its start time to 9.30 am so feel free to stroll up from school or from Xpresso for a play at Wisborough Green’s baby and toddler group at the Village Hall. On another note, if you or someone you know would like to donate any toys then Wizzy Tots would be very grateful for some more baby, messy play crafts to toddler toys. Either unused toys previously played by the grandchildren or toys your children have grown out of. Ours do come out a lot and I’m sure the kids would like a bit of a change (though please bear in mind that storage is tight for us so a full set of swings might be a step too far!). Please contact me on 07903 951917 if you would like me to pick anything up.
Our March dates are as follows: 7th, 21st and 28th March (all Fridays) If you want to find out some more about Wizzy Tots, please call me or why don’t you speak to some of the Mums who meet up at Xpresso (see below) in St Peter’s beforehand! Look forward to seeing you there. Tory Cont over........... 7

From the Editor Welcome to the March edition of Ad Vincula - as I write this, I wonder if it will ever stop raining! This issue’s Front Cover picture is fitting as, this month, we have a new regular feature “The Wisborough Green Sports Page” (p21) courtesy of Ken Vickery - many thanks, Ken. This month we also welcome the return of Nature Notes (p13) and Neighbourhood Watch (p33). In addition to these and the other usual features, this month we have articles related to the Celtique Oil & Gas Planning Application from the Sussex Wildlife Trust (p15), the Parish Council (p15) and KKWG (p17) and a report on the very enjoyable Burns Night Supper (p22-23). Other news this month is the launch of the new website for St Peter Ad Vincula Church. We hope to launch sometime in March and it will be developed over time to become the main source of information on the Church and its activities including Ad Vincula Magazine. The web address is: www.wisboroughgreenparishchurch.org.uk Please check back frequently and let us know your thoughts . Roland Zilz
An Update on Family Support Work Many of you support the work of Family Support Work in Sussex. The Petworth Deanery Committee met on Monday and we felt you would like an update. For many years FSW has owned a large house and grounds near Hurstpierpoint to give help and holidays to children and families. Because of financial constraints the house has to be sold but this will give rise to other opportunities. The aim and mission of FSW is 'to work with and support families in Sussex via the team of community workers and volunteers who help families take control of their difficult and sometimes sad circumstances. The practical help offered to families is vital and continues daily' In St Peter's the Food Basket is often full and this has helped to support hundreds of families in our area. Last Christmas Anthony Harris, a Sussex farmer, hand picked over 100 of his prize winning turkeys to give to families in need. The FSW Social Workers find that they are working with churches, schools and community centres where their work is invaluable. And they are finding that God answers prayer in the most amazing ways. One of our committee described how a family was left with 'not a stick of furniture'. Through prayer and the help of FSW the house was fully furnished in 24 hours. Another very poorly mum with a new baby found the FSW volunteer transformed her life by giving practical daily care. Family Support Work is 124 years old so there will be celebrations next year. We would love Wisborough Green to think of a special project for us to do. Thank you for your continued help and interest. Judy Moorey, Alison Jekyll, Jo Beer 11

Nature Notes Well, here we are back again after what didn’t really feel like winter at all. The endless rain clouds have kept the cold at bay since… when? The end of October? Certainly December and January have been extremely un-wintery. Maybe, by the time you read this, frost and snow will have arrived, but at least let’s hope we’ll be drying out a little! The warmer weather means spring flowers are up and out, and birds already have nesting on their minds. Our ‘tame’ pheasant has never stopped chasing the females. I’m giving him extra seeds to keep his strength up! Sadly for him, the girls seem heartily sick of it. I’ve had recent reports of a raven’s croaking call, over Kirdford Rd and in Bedham – of a huge flock of brightly-coloured chaffinches invading a garden, possibly over from Europe – and tawny owls calling - we hope they’re now nesting. - Will they find enough to eat? A magpie was seen alongside squirrels, filling its beak with peanuts and burying them. And in Flexham we had a wonderful clear sight of a marsh harrier up in trees, then it floated over us and away, down to Pulborough Brooks maybe. And this month we hear below from Alison Jekyll from Bedham. Due to drilling affairs I’ve been quite busy and she kindly penned this gentle piece. I may have to look to my laurels! Sue J Living for long periods in the steam heat of the Far East, I used to long for the scent of damp English woods in winter and spring. In our present life we live in several acres of ancient woodland, this year waterlogged, but still there is much to enjoy: fabulous mosses of every kind, glowing emerald green among the fallen leaves; the tracery of winter branches against a sky of delicate duck-egg blue and winter sun – unexpected calm after yet another storm. Squelching out to feed the ever-hungry birds, including woodpeckers addicted to peanuts and fat balls, one feels the land will never dry out again. Everything looks so bedraggled and forlorn in the garden – but the snowdrops are out, also the prunus subhirtella autumnalis and the tiny red flowers on the parottia persica. Primroses are up and will soon be like scrambled eggs in every corner. Purple crocuses take us by surprise every year, popping up in the old brick path, camomile lawn and through the overgrown banks of heather. Pulmonaria have been flowering since early January, providing nectar with the heather and crocuses, for the early bumble and honey bees. The spotted leaves of early orchids will soon be appearing in the grass and have even come up in our oak tubs filled with potting soil, round acers and azaleas, not obeying the rule that they need fungus in the soil to be spread! The birds are singing morning and evening: robins, wrens, thrushes and blackbirds. Not so many owls this year though, possibly due to a shortage of voles because of waterlogged holes. Our two soggy moggies urge us to join them outside on a rare day of sunshine. Roll on spring. A.J. 13

Northup Copse Nature Reserve Northup Copse is an ancient woodland nature reserve in the heart of the West Weald by Boxall Brook. It is the archetypal Sussex bluebell wood. Historically Northup Copse, like many of the woods in the area, was worked as hazel coppice, which was perfect for wildlife conservation. One of the golden rules in conservation is that the more varied the habitat, the more wildlife lives there. By having a whole range of coppice compartments at different stages of growth, this provided a wide range of habitats for woodland wildlife. As well as the spring carpets of bluebells and other woodland flowers such as primroses, wood anemones and yellow archangel, the old oak trees in Northup Copse are particularly important for bats. No less than eight different species of bat have been recorded there, from the tiny Common Pipistrelle to the bigger brown Noctule. One of the most exciting bats is the rare barbastelle bat which depends on Northup Copse for cover along its nightly flightline between its roost in The Mens and its feeding grounds along the River Arun. Apart from the bats, Northup Copse supports a wealth of other woodland wildlife, from larger mammals like badgers and roe deer to small mammals such as bank voles and woodmice; from the buzzards which nest high in the tree canopy to the nightingales with their charismatic song, and from the cryptically coloured Speckled Wood butterfly to the more flamboyant Silver-Washed Fritillary. Northup Copse is a very special place but it is under threat. If the plans for exploratory oil-drilling in the next field are approved, with all the disturbance that will bring from light pollution, noise and heavy traffic, will the nightingales still sing? Will timid roe deer still venture to Boxall Brook to drink? Will badgers risk discovery as they patrol their territory in the hunt for earthworms? Petra Billings, West Sussex Wildlife Trust
Public Meeting on Oil & Gas Exploration Thank you to all those who braved the atrocious weather on Friday 31st January and attended the public meeting in the Village Hall regarding Oil and Gas Exploration. Unfortunately, time constraints meant that not all submitted questions were answered by the Environment Agency, WSCC and Celtique Energy. Comprehensive responses have now been provided, in addition to the presentations given on the evening, and are available on the village website (www.wisboroughgreen.org) – click on the link from the home page. For those without internet access, a copy of the responses can be requested from the Parish Clerk by calling 701102. Wisborough Green Parish Council 15

The Wisborough Green Sports Page Football Club. At the time of writing, there has been no football played on the green this year - that is 8 weeks and still counting! The 1st XI are sitting fourth in the league having played 12, won 5, drawn 3 and lost 4 with 18 points in total. Capel are top on 24, Ashington 2nd on 23 and Billingshurst res on 19 so it is still all to play for. The Wisborough Res are sitting 5th in their league having played 10 games and have 13 points a long way The last game on the Green played 28th December behind Northchapel who have 31 points. when 1st XI played Billingshurst res and won 5-1 Wisborough also run a senior team for the over 35's but it has been difficult for them with the wet weather as well. Cricket Club. Nets have started for the juniors at Cranliegh on a Sunday afternoon between 4.00 and 5.00 pm please contact Tarni Dixon on 01403 700844 for information. Senior nets will begin in April and the first game on the green will be early May weather permitting. We have secured an overseas player from Australia again this season and look forward to welcoming Ben Tracy to the village in April. If by any chance you live in the village and have a room to let or want some gardening done around your home during the summer please contact Ken Vickery as I’m sure Ben will be looking for some part time work. Burns Night Supper BURNS NIGHT 25th January 2014 You might have been forgiven for thinking that you were in the middle of the Highlands on the evening of Saturday 25th January. In the Village Hall Car Park a lone piper in full regalia welcomed over 90 guests, all of whom had found connections with Scotland, either in their ancestry or in their dreams. The occasion was the celebration of Robbie Burns' 155th birthday and The Links Committee felt that this was a milestone that should not go without recognition - particularly if Scotland should regain their independence! Most guests had rummaged through their drawers to find something tartan to wear and outfits ranged from full highland dress to tartan underwear. The evening was run by Phil Donoghue dressed in his full Toastmaster's outfit. The Haggis for dinner was piped in in traditional fashion accompanied by 'The Chef' (Judy Donovan), 'The Whisky Bearer' (Peter Corthine) and Robert Armitage, who provided a very blood curdling rendition of the Address to the Haggis which ended with the dramatic stabbing of the Haggis. Sheila Armitage gave a beautiful rendition of 'The Selkirk Grace' and Dave Newton and his band 'The Highland Flingers' played through dinner, which was a good hearty Scottish meal. Chris Stride took the chairman's role and welcomed all the guests in his inimitable style. After dinner a series of speeches were given, starting with Jamie Daniell who proposed the toast to The Immortal Memory of the Bard. The speeches ended with an hilarious pair of speeches - the first being from Richard Vause, who proposed the toast to 'The Lassies'. The response on behalf of the lassies was given by Helen Vause who stood her ground and gave as good as she got! There was just time at the end for a quick dance of the Gay Gordon's. The only blot on the evening was that the piper managed to fall off a step whilst having his photo taken with Sandra Donoghue. The result was that the piper, Kevin Turner, sprained his wrist, which for a piper in the middle of his busiest time of year meant he had to retire hurt in readiness for the next night. He had given us a wonderful performance and Sandra, who had worked extremely hard in heading up the Links team to produce such a wonderful evening, was forgiven for whatever had caused the fall of the piper! Our thanks to her and the rest of her committee for a very memorable evening. As well as being an evening which seemed to be greatly enjoyed by everyone, the evening raised ÂŁ560 towards the additional funding that The St Peter's Links Committee provide towards special projects in the church. Wisborough Green History FROM POORHOUSE TO VILLAGE HALL 6 The builder of the workhouse was Thomas Seward and the amount of the bills paid for the construction was £1035 9s 11½d. The list of payments doesn't distinguish between labour costs and supplies with the following exceptions: Wm Thain for bricks - £44 2s 2½d, Rob Trower for lath - £14 1s, John Luff for bricks - £42 1s, Edwd Evershed for lime - £8 9s 6d, Messrs Aldrett and Birchen for digging the cellar - £5, Mr. Denyer for bricks - £2 11s 10d and Mrs. Elliot for hair - £2 15s. I assume that the hair was used for the making of plaster unless anyone can suggest another purpose. The money was repaid to Thomas Seward over the next nine years at an interest rate of 5%. The parish also borrowed £150 from the Loxwood Friendly Society. The historical records has lists of the rooms in the extended poorhouse but unfortunately they don't usually identify where they were located! However (intelligent?!) deduction can place some of them in their most likely location. The Governors Room, kitchen and pantry were located on the old part's ground floor together with two school rooms. The Committee Room was where it is today; it's interesting that it still carries the name given in 1797. The room was used for vestry meetings; the name comes from parishioners' meetings that were held in either the church, vestry or elsewhere and is an abbreviation for the full legal style of “the Parishioners in Vestry assembled". In 1784 vestry meetings were being held in the King's Arms in Billingshurst, by 1790 they were held in The Three Crowns and in 1797 the room was set aside in the new part as "The Committee Room". The positions of the larger chimneys indicates where the kitchen, bakehouse and cooking room were located; this suggests that the bakehouse was in the bar area and the cooking room in or near the western single-storey extension. The washhouse and woodhouse were probably in the western extension. This suggestion is re-enforced by building work in 1830 that enlarged the washhouse, cooking room and woodhouse and included carpenter's work to "frame a new roof and to make two window frames, two doors and two door cases and to bond the end of the washhouse with caulk". The women's rooms seemed to be upstairs in the old part (now known as Old House). The Governor's Chambers were on the second floor of the new part. Five bedrooms and the Apple Room were listed and were probably in the attic of the new part. Several other rooms are impossible to locate, viz. Mad Room, Dead Room and Long Room though they were probably in the new part. Does anyone know for what purpose they would have been used? Soon after completion of the new part, French prisoners of war taken during the Napoleonic Wars of 1799 to 1815 were housed and put to work on the turnpike roads though there is no indication of how they interacted with the proper inmates; more details were in the article for April 2010 . (To be continued - probably next month ) RB

Neighbourhood Watch Urgent police warning about phone call fraudsters Sussex Police are issuing an urgent warning to residents, especially the elderly and anyone living alone, not to be taken in by a current wave of crime in which phone callers posing as police officers or bank staff ask for bank and card details. Within a 36-hour period on Tuesday 11 February and the following day there were nine more cases in Sussex, in three of which money was obtained. Late on Wednesday evening, 12 February, calls were made to two residents in Brighton. A woman living in Kimberley Road was defrauded of £600 cash, A similar call was made around the same time to a resident in Ainsworth Avenue, Ovingdean, but they became suspicious and did not part with any information or money. Meanwhile a woman living in Harveys Lane, Ringmer, lost £1350 to just this scam on the same evening. On the previous evening, Tuesday, phone calls were made to six addresses in Brighton. In five cases the residents became suspicious and did not part with anything but in the sixth case, in Lloyd Close, Hove, the thieves managed to obtain some £2500. There has been a recent rise in this crime across the force area, and elsewhere in the country. In Sussex there have been 24 offences since last August, in which the fraudsters have got away with more than £150,000. There was an upsurge in these incidents in December, when 55 incidents were reported although only in six cases was money obtained, and after a decrease in January there have so far been more than 30 such calls in February, with more than 10 of them relating to cash being taken. How it works - The fraudsters call the intended victim claiming to be from either the Police or a Bank. They tell them that their card details have been fraudulently used and that they need to act urgently to protect themselves. They suggest that they hang up and ring the bank or police back to ensure that the call is genuine. Don't be fooled - they stay on the line and pretend to be the police or the bank. They then tell the intended victim to key in or read out their PIN number. They will then send a taxi or courier, who may know nothing about the crime, to collect the bank card. With this and the PIN they will then have full access to spend your money. Detective Chief Inspector Ali Eaton from the Surrey and Sussex Police Specialist Crime Command said: "Under no circumstances would the police or your bank request your PIN number over the telephone or arrange collection of your bank cards from your home address in this manner. "Never give out your bank details to someone who has contacted you on your home phone unsolicited. If you have any suspicions please do not use the phone you have just been called on to contact the police or your bank. If possible use another phone to contact the police to report it, or to contact a friend or relative to alert them. "I urge anyone reading or hearing this message to pass it on to any friends and relatives who may not be aware of this particular type of targeted fraud, to prevent any vulnerable friends or family members from becoming victims. Skin the chicken breasts and halve each lengthwise. 2. Chop 6 of the sage leaves and sprinkle over the chicken 3. Heat a little oil and butter in a heavy frying pan and sauté each parcel for about 3 minutes on each side 5. Pour in the vermouth, cover the pan and cook for 2 to 3 minutes 6. Remove the chicken, keeping it warm, chop the remaining sage and add to the pan with the cream. Warm through. Farmers’ and Village Market News
Next Market Thursday 13th March 2014 Village Hall 9 am – 12.30 pm
St Peter's Fair Trading written by Valerie Mourilyan and Gillian Gough How it started! Our St. Peter's House Group was following a course entitled “The Lord's Prayer”praying it, meaning it and living it. Here Jesus gives us a pattern for living as his disciples. This famous prayer also raises vital questions for today's world in which “daily bread” is uncertain for billions and a refusal to “forgive those who trespass against us” escalates violence. This provoked a lively discussion on our personal responsibilities. No doubt we can all remember being encouraged to “eat up our greens” and to think of the starving children in Africa but what could we do? First, we should endeavour to buy locally sourced produce but this doesn't help the starving families worldwide, however buying FAIR TRADE produce could. So we decided we should have our own FAIR TRADE stall both in Church and the monthly village market. To enable us to buy our initial stock, we approached the PCC (Parochial Parish Council) for a loan which was granted and now fully repaid. To get us started several wonderful friends sponsored the table rent in the market and many of them have become regular customers not only on market day but also by ordering through us from the catalogue. We stock a wide range of teas, coffees, chocolate, dried fruit, sugars, biscuits, pasta, rice and occasionally seasonal items. Three years later we still attend the Village Market and enjoy introducing the FAIR TRADE philosophy. On the fourth Sunday of each month after the All Age Family Service we have our table of goodies in the back of the Church. We are happy to forward orders to Traidcraft for anyone wishing to order items from their catalogue thus saving postage. DO PLEASE COME AND SUPPORT US AND OUR VILLAGE MARKET. Stop Press GREAT to welcome Wayside Organics on board with their fruit and veg. SORRY to hear the following misfortunes: Nick (Quail) had a lot of storm damage and has lost animals as well. AGM - Monday 3rd March Last Talk - Monday 31st March (both in Village Hall at 8pm – plus table top competition) It's that time of year again to think of the past year, this year and the future. Yes. It's the AGM. and its fun, garden- themed, quiz done in groups. Anyone who has been at one of our recent AGMs will know that they are not to be dreaded. Far from being a necessary formality and duty, together we do what is needed to keep our Society in good health, so that it continues to bring enjoyment throughout the year. Talks, outings, plant sales and the two Shows; what other Gardening Society in West Sussex does that? Do come and become a member for the coming year and book up the dates in your diary. We can take great pride in WGHS. We all contribute to its success in one way or another. Our last talk of the winter is on Monday 31st March (note change of date) entitled “Around the World in 80 Gardens” by Colin Jones. It should be an interesting talk with slides – and certainly drier gardens than we currently have in the village! That reminds me; Membership subscriptions are now due, please send or deliver to Alison Midwinter at Fernlea, Kirdford Road, RH14 0DD. If you have a friend or neighbour who is interested in any aspects of gardening, do encourage them to join at such a modest cost and so be able to enjoy our visits, talks and shows, as well as the social aspects of our meetings. New people, new ideas, new ways for encouraging our young gardeners. On Saturday May 10, the Spring Plant Sale will be on the Millennium Green. Will we have a fringe of wild daffodils and fritillaries or will they have sunk without a trace? Please look out for spare plants, possibly ones you had divided earlier. You may be sowing, so some extra to sell here would be great. It is a good time to clear out what did not suit your garden, but might well be just the thing for a different setting in someone else's garden. Do not be shy about contributing just a few items. Remember garden sundries and the results of spring cleaning the shed could be passed on. That reminds me - the pre-school play group, Climbing Bears, would really like some people to help develop the children’s feel for growing plants - one hour a week on a Monday or Friday. There is support for someone, or a couple, or friends, willing to give it a go. This support will help you to know how to manage it, but it’s your plant growing skills, ENTHUSIAM and sense of FUN that is needed. Help to inspire the next generation of growers! Please contact WGHS or Climbing Bears, telephone numbers at the back of the magazine. The WGHS needs help as well. Through circumstances beyond our control we have an unused Marquee on the Saturday of August Bank Holiday Weekend. Have you any contacts with any organisation or group that may find this venue of interest for an event? 38

Wisborough Green Horticultural Society (Cont) It could be for a special luncheon or afternoon/evening celebration/ occasion. If so please get in touch. It is a shame to leave it unused. We would be delighted to have contacts with possible users. Please help the WGHS to carry on sustaining and developing a love of gardening in our locality. Aija Hamilton

Wealden Trefoil Guild The Wealden Trefoil held its AGM in St Mary’s Room Billingshurst on Feb 4th and the current officers were re-elected, Ruth Isaacs as Chairman, June Clark as Secretary, Hazel Barkworth as Treasurer, Julia Banks as programme secretary and Jackie Sharp for Birthday Cards, The census money was kept at £25 and paid by those present. Items on the cancelled January Agenda were discussed in detail and the programme for the coming year was discussed and confirmed. Ruth had written a quiz for members to complete. We had received an email from ‘Link to Hope’ to say that 34,000 shoeboxes had been forwarded to needy families and elderly residents plus the extra knitted articles and toys that had been used to pack down the sides of the crates of shoeboxes, which were also gratefully received and given to those most in need to their surprised joy. Unfortunately St Mary’s Room had been booked for our next meeting date on March 4th so it has been decided to meet at the home of our Secretary June Clark at Homelea in Wisborough Green, when the subject will be favourite books and each member to give a short presentation and we will also be serving pancakes. All are welcome to attend. Ruth Isaacs, Chairman Tel. 01403 785402 or June Clark, Secretary Tel: 01403 700522

WI Report Those of you who were put off by the weather on 6th February missed a treat when our very own Ruth Isaacs told us about the history of quilting and then went on to show us examples of the quilts she has made. Ruth started by making quilts for various family members before progressing to wonderful wall hangings and more complicated designs and techniques.
On March 6th, another of our members, Caroline Frost, will be giving us ideas for decorating Easter cakes. There will be a competition (optional) at this meeting for a decorated cup cake. Get baking if you want to enter and bring along one cup cake (which we can then eat with our refreshments at the end of the meeting!) Having resisted Sue’s pleas for a Jumble Sale for a few years we have given in and our Grand Jumble Sale will be held on Saturday, 15th March in the Village Hall at 10.30am. Weather Watch - January 2014 January weather - WET AGAIN! Wisborough Green rainfall for January was 237mm (last year 100mm – 6yr average 107mm). Wettest for the month in the UK was 424mm at Tyndrum, Stirlingshire. Highest temperature for the UK was 14°C at Bude, Cornwall. Lowest recorded was -6.6°C at Altnaharra, Sutherland. Sunshine levels were average for January – apparently the 27th sunniest in the last 100years (not that weathervane remembers!). Eskdalemuir in Dumfriesshire must have had a dull month – only 11 hours of sun for the whole month! Weathervane
CYBER TIPS PLEASE READ THIS VERY CARFULLY! I received a forwarded email early last month. I guess some of you who read this got it too; it started like this: “Subject: PLEASE READ. Not a joke. THIS IS IMPORTANT BEWARE and tell everybody you can think of!!! Regards, Better to be safe than sorry. Dave' s brother is a very advanced programmer……….” Funny, I thought, haven’t I heard of Dave’s brother before? He probably is a programmer but not the sort you would want to hear from. The message went on to say that if I receive an email headed “POSTCARD FROM HALLMARK” I should delete it immediately because it contained the latest deadly virus. Funny, I thought again, I seem to remember this one before too. A short bit of research with Google soon confirmed that I might have come across it as far back as February 2008. (Dave’s brother is getting on a bit now!) I used to think that these emails are just a nuisance, but those who received it in and around Wisborough Green will have noticed that because it had been forwarded several times, the trail contained a large number of email addresses that I don’t want and, I’m sure, the owners do not want so widely published. The forwarder, however, had taken care to use ‘BCC’ for distribution. Dodgy collectors of email addresses were having a field day. If you use the ‘FWD’ system to send on an email, don’t forget to delete the trail if it is irrelevant and especially if it contains email addresses. Watchfulness is the “hallmark” of email distribution Peter Edmonds
