Pastoral Letter We have been asked to write a few lines about ourselves and our family for Ad Vincula. A very long time ago, we met through a youth fellowship local to Hassocks and Burgess Hill; where we grew up. After getting married and going to theological college we have served in East Grinstead and Horsham (Broadbridge Heath). We moved to Pulborough when Clive became Diocesan Youth Officer and then on to Amberley as Priest-inCharge. For the last eighteen years Clive has been Vicar of Southbourne with West Thorney. We have four grown up children. Daniel, our eldest, is a youth worker and is married to Beccy. Rachel is married to Eric and lives in Uganda, where they both work for YWAM (Youth with a Mission). They have two children and one on the way. Bethany and Hannah are both working and at present live with us. We are excited about coming to Wisborough Green and getting to know people in the village. The role the Bishop has asked me to develop as District Mission Team Leader is new for the Diocese in so far as it incorporates outreach at the centre of my job description. I will be supporting my colleagues in the benefices of Barlavington, Burton with Coates and Sutton with Bignor; Lurgashall and North Chapel with Ebernoe; Stopham and Fittleworth. The breakdown of my time is eighty percent Wisborough Green and twenty percent outreach and support to the villages. One of the scriptures that has always been at the forefront of our Ministry are the words from St Paul’s letter to the Colossians chapter 3 Verse 17: And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. As Christians we are called to give thanks to God daily for his faithfulness and love to us through his Son Jesus, in the power of the Holy Spirit. Sunday brings us a great opportunity to celebrate this together as God’s people. We look forward to meeting many of you over the coming months. Clive and Marion Jenkins 5

From the Editor Welcome to the March edition of Ad Vincula. I am delighted (and more than a little relieved) to announce that Sarah Jackson has agreed to take on the role of Deputy Editor and Advertising Coordinator. I hope she knows what she’s letting herself in for! On Thursday 12 February 2015 the church of St Peter ad Vincula entered a new era with the Installation and Licensing of its new Vicar, Clive Jenkins, ending nearly 18 months of Interregnum. See pages 22 & 23 for report and pictures. Clive and his wife Marion also tell us a little about themselves and their family in the Pastoral Letter on page 5. I wish Clive, Marion and their family a long and happy time in Wisborough Green. In addition to the usual articles and the welcome return of ‘Nature Notes’ and ‘Sports News’, this month we have some important information about the threat to Boxal Bridge (p12), an update from KKWG on the oil/gas exploration planning appeal (p13), a tribute to Brother Angelo who kept us all sane during the long interregnum (p15) and an urgent appeal by The Cinnamon Trust for dog walking volunteers in Wisborough Green (p33). As always, I would love to hear from you with any comments or suggestions. Best wishes, Roland Zilz
LENT STUDY GROUP Thursday evenings, February 26, March 5, 12, 19 & 26. 7.30 – 9.00 pm at No.2. Glebe Way, Wisborough Green. We will be studying “PRAISE HIM” Songs of Praise in the New Testament, a course in five sessions written by Paula Gooder. A booklet is available for all those who wish to attend, and those who would just like the booklet and are unable to meet with us. There are many Songs of Praise in the New Testament; the ones Paula has chosen begin with the theme of gratitude, and what being thankful can do for our life of praise. Session five rounds off our exploration by reflecting on possibly the greatest New Testament poem of all: John 1.1-14 which talks about Jesus as “the word made flesh”. These five sessions will remind us of who God was, and is and will be; what he has done and what he will continue to do for each one of us. A WARM WELCOME to all who are interested, please contact Doris Smallwood 01403 700606 or doris.smallwood@btinternet.com

Nature Notes Did you know heathland is now one of the rarest habitats? Apparently the UK has more of it than anywhere else in the world. So we need to look after it. The other day we had a guided walk around Graffham Nature Reserve. The Sussex Wildlife Trust is gradually returning it to its original heathland.! In the last 30 or so years the area has been closely planted with pine for timber, making the ground below dark and sterile. SWT plan to remove a good percentage of it, leaving specific areas untouched. The root bases of fallen pines can host solitary wasps and other insects, and the acid pools below attract certain dragonflies and damsels, which might mean a visit by a hobby – my favourite little hawk. A few local people were understandably concerned about the tree felling at first, but a gradual reduction of the pines has reassured them. It’s opening up spaces for more wildlife to return, and things are getting better all the time. Last year a few nightjars arrived, and now they’re hoping for Dartford warblers too. There are also siskins, firecrests, woodlarks, tree pipits and crossbills, so well worth a visit. And it’s free! Second question - Did you know that pheasants eat daffodils? We discovered this last December, when to our surprise we found two buds had popped up and were about to flower. The very next day, a male bird was tucking in to one of them leaving it decimated, but the second bud survived. Amazingly that one flower is still open now, a little tired, but still hanging on. Mother Nature eh? Let’s hope lots of other things do as well in 2015. Not only daffodil buds….this winter our back garden has been invaded by dozens more pheasants, almost all females. Word has obviously got about that food is freely available! I have to try to feed them really early, before the brown hordes pour in from the field and take over. And now they’re ignoring the corn we throw for them, and eating everything else, so our small birds don’t get much of a look-in! We’ve had to resort to finding narrow ledges, and making little plastic hanging pots and platforms so the robins and other ground feeders at least get a share of winter delicacies! In spite of the cold nights there’s a feeling of spring in the air and just his morning we had a terrific sighting of our local buzzards. First one and then the other flew really low over our heads, calling to each other as they passed. Maybe they’re looking for a nest site? There have already been sightings of ravens, peregrines, red kite, and the young Newpound kestrel has survived the winter, hooray. And from the rookery in the woods behind us a huge number of crows, jackdaws and rooks emerge with a marvellous raucous chorus early each morning. They wheel and shout before dispersing to feed, then they repeat this as dusk falls. I just hope they give the buzzards a bit of peace to breed. They’re a bit outnumbered! Sue J 11
SAVE BOXAL BRIDGE! West Sussex County Council (WSCC) Highways Department is considering demolishing our local Boxal Bridge despite opposition from both Wisborough Green and Kirdford Parish Councils and local residents. In September 2014 a Feasibility Study was commissioned to examine the state of the bridge and to make recommendations. On Page 31 of the Study there are six Conclusions and Recommendations, and it is Option 6 – to demolish the existing bridge and replace it with a wider structure which was the preferred option chosen by the consultants and now being advocated by WSCC Highways Department. In November 2013 both Kirdford and Wisborough Green Parish Councils stated in clear unequivocal terms to WSCC that they did not want the bridge demolished. The bridge is listed as a Chichester District Council (CDC) heritage asset and it is named as a community asset in the Kirdford Neighbourhood Plan adopted in 2014. However these distinctions give the bridge no statutory protection. The parishes and local residents want to keep the bridge as it is now and retain its rural character which is in keeping with the other three historic bridges in the area. Apart from the historical and community value of the bridge, there is the safety aspect concerning both the bridge and its approach. The bridge does need approaching with caution. The current speed limit is 60 mph, unrealistic considering the width of the road and the bends on the approach to the bridge. However, evidence from traffic surveys have shown that the average speed is usually below this – at the higher end of 40 mph. Locals familiar with the road and the narrow bridge slow down. If the bridge is replaced by a structure that can accommodate two cars then drivers will accelerate and this could result in an increasing number of accidents. Accidents have happened on this stretch of road, but many go unrecorded because the police are not called. On 5th January 2015 there was a head-on collision involving two cars between the bridge on the Kirdford side and just before the entrance to the proposed Oil/Gas drilling site. Fortunately there were no fatalities but the rescue involved two fire engines and a helicopter. It was reported in the County Times .

Kirdford Road is a country lane serving farms and equine establishments and links Kirdford to Wisborough Green. The bridge sits on the boundary between the two parishes providing a vital link between the two villages. Boxal Bridge is a much valued commodity to both communities. The road is prone to flooding but
SAVE BOXAL BRIDGE! (Cont) it is often the only way to access Kirdford village when the other approaches are severely flooded. WSCC insists that the proposed demolition of the bridge and a wider replacement has no bearing on the application for exploratory drilling at the site south of Boxal Bridge 400 metres away! WSCC has informed the parishes that it has suspended the detailed design phase of the scheme until after the decision of the Public Inquiry into Celtique Energie’s planning appeal, to be held in September, has been announced. So this gives the residents of the local villages and the surrounding area plenty of time to voice their views on the proposed demolition. So please sign the current petition to stop the demolition of Boxal Bridge and explore ALL the options in a public and transparent debate of the full WSCC committee. Link to the petition to save Boxal Bridge: http://epetition.westsussex.public-i.tv/epetition_core/view/boxalbridge Only sign if you live, work or study in West Sussex and use that postcode. It will run until 6th May so please pass it on to friends, family and neighbours. For further information please contact Katy Fletcher fletcher.katy@googlemail.com
Oil/Gas Exploration - KKWG Update Before Christmas, KKWG sent out a letter to all residents in the Parishes of Kirdford and Wisborough Green outlining the current state of affairs with regard to the Oil/Gas Exploratory drill application by Celtique Energie. In brief, while WSCC Planning Committee unanimously objected to the application on July 22nd, the company appealed this decision in November and it is intended to hear the issues raised at a Public Inquiry to be held for 12 days from September 8th starting at 10 am. The PI does not sit on Mondays nor will this one be working on Friday afternoon and, apart from that first day, starts work at 9.30 am daily. It is to be held in Northchapel Village Hall. A Public Inquiry is a formal setting at which the company and the Council will present their cases for and against and an Inspector will decide. In addition, KKWG applied for, and obtained consent, to be a Rule 6 party. This means we get copies of all the paperwork and can take part presenting evidence and cross-examining witnesses. It also means we have to find ÂŁ100,000 to pay for a Planning Advocate and our own witnesses on Transport, Character of the Villages, Noise and Wildlife, notably the rare bats. Sue Jameson will be hosting an information session in Wisborough Green Village Hall at 7pm on Tuesday 24th March. Wine and cheese will be followed by a short catch up on the latest news about the drilling application. If anyone can help undertake some of the work involved or make a donation let us know via the contact number below or the no-drilling website . KKWG: Jill Sutcliffe 01403 700395 13

Wisborough Green Primary School News We are now officially half way through the school year. The time in school really does fly by. This term has been great so far, with many visits and visitors planned for different year groups! Bringing learning to life is a huge part of what we do at Wisborough Green School. Our Explorers (Reception) class have been learning about ‘Amazing Animals’ and have met a fantastic range of animals so far. We are extremely fortunate to have such supportive parents; one in particular has brought in a pony, donkey, turkey, quail and a lizard to name a few. In addition to this, the children will be visiting Brinsbury later this term to see how the animals are looked after there. The children have taken it in turns to bring in their pets too, which has been so popular. We have met a variety of puppies, rabbits and guinea pigs. Our Inventors and Detectives (Year 1 and 2) have been learning about the Antarctic. Penguins and polar bears have featured very heavily in both classrooms! Detectives’ class had to unravel a very special mystery as a penguin was delivered to school but they couldn’t find it anywhere because it had already escaped! In the end our fantastic premises manager, Mr Goodchild, spotted it in the swimming pool and managed to take a photograph so that the children could see what it looked like. He then found the penguin and sent it straight back to the zoo. The children have thoroughly enjoyed becoming Penguin Experts and all received a certificate to show how hard they have been working. As you might remember we have planned the following Learning Journeys in Key Stage 2: ‘Mission to Mars’ in Year 3 and 4 and ‘All the Fun of the Fair in Year 5 and 6. We were able to arrange a special visit from the Winchester Science Centre, who brought in lots of K’nex kits for our Key Stage Two children to explore for a day. We planned special workshops for our Adventurers and Creators (Year 3 and 4) to design and make space vehicles for different purposes. Our Investigators and Pioneers (Year 5 and 6) designed and made fairground rides. I think a key part of this work, which I discussed with some of the Year 5 children on that day, was to evaluate their work and make the necessary changes so that their fairground ride worked successfully. The children were highly engaged in their work during the day and are looking forward to visiting the Science Museum later this term to take part in more workshops. I think we can see that learning at Wisborough Green Primary School is fun and engaging. There are some lovely photos and examples of the children’s work on the website if you would like to see for yourself. Kind regards, Trudy Emberson, Headteacher 15

Brother Angelo’s Last Service Many of you will know that Brother Angelo has been a regular fixture during our long Interregnum, usually taking the Sung Eucharist services on the first and third Sundays every month. All in all he has taken approximately 40 services during this period. Through his humour, wisdom and life experiences he has delivered many instructive and thought provoking sermons. Sometimes he has made us uneasy by getting to the heart of our lack of Christian living, but has always made us laugh and left us with hope and a feeling of joy about the message of Jesus. At the end of his last service on Sunday 1 February 2015, the choir turned and sang to Bro Angelo - “The Lord bless you and keep you” by John Rutter. There wasn’t a dry eye in the church. We will miss him and he will probably miss us too.
EASTER LILIES If you would like to give a donation for the lilies, which will be used to decorate the church at Easter and to sign a card in remembrance of a loved one, a card and a donation box will be at the back of church on Sundays. Alternatively you can give the money to Maggie Edwards (01403 700944) or one of the Churchwardens. Thank you.

Brenda Moorey 13 January 1922 to 21 January 2015 Brenda moved from Selsey to Wisborough Green 10years ago after her husband, Stan died. She had been brought up in Balcombe and her family could be traced back there to the 16th century. Growing up in a small cottage with 3 older brothers was not easy but often a lot of fun! It was always difficult to fit the family, and often friends around the table with not enough to go round. The boys were always in trouble after bringing a pheasant home – but every bit was used for lunch! Brenda left school at 14yrs and was first apprenticed to a dressmaker and later a hairdresser. During the war she met and married Stan when the RAF were stationed near to the village. She hated living in London but became a dab hand with the soldering iron at the munitions factory in Hendon! After the war they returned to Balcombe and with Roger and Jill became part of happy village life. Brenda was a committed Christian and always loved being part of the Mother's Union. On their move to Selsey in the ‘80s she became the much loved secretary of MU. Brenda loved the country so her move to Wisborough Green was easier than she could have thought. She made friends at Wyatt House and soon became part of St Peter's loving the Quiet Mornings and also the Flower Club. It was sad in 2012 when, because of ill health, Brenda moved to Longfield Nursing Home, in Billingshurst. Judy and Family want to thank all Brenda's friends for their love and kindness to her – especially taking her to events and visiting her at Longfield. She was a dear friend and much loved Mum, Grandma and Great Grandma. Judy Moorey

Licensing of the Reverend Clive Jenkins as P Thursday, 12 February 2015 saw St Peter ad Vincula filled to capacity with two hundred and fifty people taking up every available seat (including extras brought in from the village hall). The people were there to witness and be part of the licensing and installation service of Clive Jenkins the new Priest in Charge of the parish of Wisborough Green. The service was led by The Right Reverend Mark Sowerby, Bishop of Horsham assisted by The Venerable Fiona Windsor Archdeacon of Horsham. The entrance procession was led by the choir of St Peter’s followed by the visiting clergy, the Parish Priest Designate, the Rural Dean, the Archdeacon, Churchwardens and, finally, the Bishop and the Bishop’s Chaplain. Tony Clements, the Bishop's chaplain said that he couldn't recall a licensing service where there were as many robed clergy in the procession nor as full a church other than at a cathedral service. It must have been a record for a small parish church! The service followed fairly closely the standard “Sung Eucharist” with the actual licensing element sandwiched in the middle. The sound of so many voices singing joyous hymns full of praise to God was a truly uplifting experience. Many people from the village attended the occasion as well as a coach load of parishioners from Clive's previous church to wish him well in the next chapter of his ministry. This was a fitting celebration of a new phase for us. After the service an amazing firework display took place up and over the churchyard and then drinks and canapés were served in the Village Hall. There have been many lovely comments about the welcome and celebration which took place on that evening, which can be summed up in the words of one of the visiting clergy in an email he sent to us afterwards - 'Well done for last night to everyone from your place who made us so welcome and created a very special greeting to Clive. Fireworks - a crowning glory. Brilliant!'

Wisborough Green History - GLAS The last issue stated that the centre of English glassmaking was located in the Weald especially around the ancient forests of the Sussex / Surrey borders and centring upon Wisborough, Loxwood, Northchapel and Chiddingfold This goes back to the 14th century when many Flemish and French glassworkers settled in the area their skills being regarded as the best in the world. This became a thriving local industry whose workers' names showed that the founding families had been continental immigrants, e.g. John de Almayne or the Schurterres (later anglicised to Shorter) who provided plain glass for St George's Chapel Windsor. The industry operated on a small scale and the main glass products were drinking and decorative vessels. As described last month, their plain glass, which was known as white or forest glass, wasn't perfectly transparent but had a pale greenish tinge For that reason, many medieval customers specified that their windows must be made of foreign glass that was either totally transparent or could be expertly coloured. The influx of the Huguenot refugees dates from c1567 m ade s i g n if ic a nt changes to the glass making industry and it is these people who are the subject of the lancet window in Wisborough church. It commemorates the principal glassmakers working in the parish, viz. the Bongars and C aquer a ys from Normandy and Hennezels and Thietrys from Lorraine. The parish registers of the area contain many French names between 1560 and 1620, those in Wisborough Green numbering at least 26. The background to these glassmakers varies, e.g. in 1579 Pierre Bongar was granted a licence by the Bishop of Chichester to minister and serve in French at Wisborough Green church. The lancet window is so called because it is narrow and pointed like a lance. 30
SSMAKING IN THE WEALD (Part 2) After an increase in Catholic hostility towards the members of the Protestant Reformed Church of France in 1559, Mary Queen of Scots became Queen consort to King Francis II, rounded up the Huguenots and charged them with heresy. This was the beginning of the French Wars of Religion, and religious persecution that was to cause a mass exodus of refugees to Protestant nations. During the 14th century to the start of the 16th century, the area was known for its excellent natural resources for making glass. The influx of Huguenot refugees brought a wave of glassmakers who settled in the area and so brought new technologies and techniques that greatly improved the industry in the area, including the production of coloured glass. Investigations at two glasshouse sites at Idehurst, Strood Green and the one at Tanland Copse, Northchapel showed that these later glassmakers had brought with them a different glass making recipe that used a high-lime and low-alkali mixture and was of a much clearer quality. The most significant and influential person and who advanced the success of glass making in the area was Jean Carré. He was a Huguenot glassmaker, born in the Artois region of France around 1520. He learned his trade in Antwerp before moving to England c1560 as a religious refugee. He became responsible for the revival of the manufacture of window glass and fine crystal tableware into Elizabethan England. After arriving in England, he immediately built two glass furnaces in Fernefold (later known as Farnefold, Varno and Barnfold) to the east of Loxwood (where it is believed that he lived) and appears on a 1610 map and one in Sidney Wood just to the west of Alfold. Another furnace was built in London for the production of Venetian style glassware. His determination to produce window glass in the Weald caused him to petition the state to provide him and his partner, Anthony Becku, with a monopoly on glass production. In 1567, they were issued a monopoly on window glass production in the Lorraine or Norman manner for 21 years on the proviso that they trained Englishmen in this skills, however this never happened as they were reluctant to pass on their skills. Carré established four families to manage the work, viz. Enzell, Tysack, Tittery and Hoe all of whom had earned privilege from King of France. However they displayed the very worst attributes of nobility and none of the finer. They were proud but lacked good manners and impulsive but without grace; this did not endear them to those with whom they worked and his dealings with local glassmakers could be described as unscrupulous. This resulted in disputes with other glass makers and the ironworkers over the amount of forest being cleared for fuel which they claimed they needed and as a result Carré and his Lorrainers became scapegoats, somewhat unfairly as the ironworkers were the greatest plunderers of woodland. In 1568, two of Carré's workmen and Becku’s son had a dispute that resulted in a fine for the workmen, and the end of Becku and Carré's partnership. Surrey County Council's archive has a series of letters that relate to Carré and his argument with Becku. Although this was a violation of the patent they had been issued, Carré was given permission to continue as his enterprise was seen as a great source of revenue, and it flourished well past his death on 27th May 1572. RB. (To be really concluded next month) 31

The Cinnamon Trust, Wisborough Green The Cinnamon Trust is the only specialist national charity for the terminally ill and people in their later years and their much loved, much needed companion animals. We urgently need dog walking volunteers in Wisborough Green for a dear little 5 year old Poodle Cross who would love to go for a good walk. What happens if illness, injury or just getting older affects our ability to look after our four legged companions? Elderly or ill pet owners become worried about their ability to care for their pets feeling that their only option is to rehome them, this is where our national network of dedicated volunteers step in to offer support enabling them to stay together. We’ll walk the dog for a housebound owner, we’ll foster pets when owners need hospital care, we’ll fetch the cat food, even clean out the bird cage or litter trays. We are always seeking new volunteers even if you can only spare an hour a week we would love to hear from you. If anyone can help please call during office hours 01736 758707 or via email volunteer@cinnamon.org.uk Please also check out our website for more details www.cinnamon.org.uk Registered charity number 1134680
Churchill’s Funeral The anniversary of Winston Churchill’s funeral last month brought back memories for many of us. And yet amidst all the nostalgia and the ceremony there was one little dead fly in the ointment – the revelation uncovered in Jeremy Paxman’s documentary that the dockers at Hay’s Wharf didn’t like Churchill. He was upper class; they were working class. For many, the sight of the jibs being lowered as a mark of respect as the Havengore, carrying Churchill’s coffin, made her way upstream, was the most abiding one of all. So the idea that the dockers had to be bribed to make this memorable gesture came as something of a shock. At least that was the suggestion. Behind the defiant masque of class solidarity however I wonder whether it was quite as the single docker being interviewed would suggest. Some of the views his workmates expressed at the time may have been an expression of misguided loyalty to one another. Perhaps in private many would have entertained a more appreciative and thankful spirit. In fact it would be surprising if some did not, in time, come to take pride at their important role they had played at a time of national grief. What was striking about the footage from 1965 was the respect that was given as the gun carriage was pulled from Westminster to St Paul’s. People bowed their heads in collective silence. Men removed their hats. A nation paused to reflect and be thankful. Cont. over...... 33

Churchill’s Funeral (Cont) It is difficult to think this would happen nowadays. It would have been a noisy cauldron of clicking cameras held aloft. The modern habit of clapping in celebration at the life lived would probably have been in evidence too. Maybe we’ve lost something important here. The death of anyone – friend, family member or just someone we know – should make us stop and be quiet. This is the time to reflect in silence. And because life is short and uncertain these are the occasions to prompt us to face up to our own mortality and seek God whilst there is yet time. Paul Mackrell

Farmers’ and Village Market News
Next Market - Thursday 12th March 2015 Village Hall 9 am – 12.30 pm Surprise, surprise, Radio Sussex presenters have been referring to us on the two days before the Market in February. We even had some people from the south coast as well. Olives are back with some cheese as well as Turkish delight and Baklavas. Daniel Assadi may bring more cheese next time. We are so sad to see Brian of the pork and bacon stall retire. Our thoughts and best wishes go with him. Brian's produce has enhanced many a meal from breakfast to lunch to dinner. People came routinely for his bacon and sausages. *** This month will be Brian’s last appearance at the market *** A new baby girl (Sydney) was born very recently to David and Frances Jesse. Congratulations all round. He is our lamb butcher and supplier of hand made smoked dry sausages. Some are English cousins of the Chorizo sausage, such intense flavour. David has undertaken to take over Brian's pork stall with a friend to run it, so enterprising. Usborne Children's Book stall is run by Nicki Ramplin who is associated with Wisborough Green pre school. She knows both the book stock at the Market and in the catalogue really well. If specific help would be useful then do ask her. A book on grammar for children, very well presented and interesting, made me wish my teachers had been this clear. Janet Slinn who used to run is emigrating to France. Sue Turley of seasonal goodies, think Simnel Cake, fame will be coming to the pre Easter Market. At the last count there were twenty eight very different stalls each selling a big variety of products. All this in a comfortable sized space, mostly inside but outside the stalls have big sheltering canvas roofs. No tramping for miles up aisles and down aisles nor walking between shops on the street. Then the Macmillan refreshments and the chance to chat with whomever you meet. A comfy sort of experience that does not tire one out. Happy visiting and shopping. Wisborough Green Horticultural Society Monday 2nd March 2015 AGM at 8pm Village Hall and Monday 30th March at 8pm Village Hall Talk by Derek Dexter on “Growing and Showing Fuchsias” Why two events in March? No talk on Easter Monday and 13th April is a bit far away, so the 30th of March for the Fuchsia talk. The speaker giving the talk, Derek, has grown and shown fuchsias for 18 years, so he really is experienced and passionate about them. He started by falling in love with fuchsias at a flower show. There are about 30,000 varieties to choose from. When his daughter was born Derek had not enough time to devote to his allotment so he extended his fuchsia growing and started showing them. Derek is a recommended speaker for the British Fuchsia Society. He uses slides to illustrate and hands on methods to show how easy these fantastic flowers are to propagate and grow. Unusual varieties not found in the usual garden centres will be for sale as potted cuttings (75p) for gardeners to grow on. “Easy” says Derek. Loads of tips on how to do it successfully will be in the talk. He has a full time job so he has to be a speedy efficient gardener! Can't wait! The A.G.M. 2nd March This is the day the Membership of nearly 200 garden enthusiasts have their say. This is Judgement Day for the committee who organise the structure of events during the year for members to be involved in. Let us know either at the AGM or ring Philip (WG 700402) if you would like to join the committee. Often AGM's are a bit boring but people enjoy coming to ours. We start with a welcoming drink then to business. The business is business like and open to views and new ideas. The fun comes afterwards when we mill around and make a group to tackle a gardening themed quiz in competition with other groups. Time and time again we meet new people which adds to the fun and laughs. Self marking with collective oohs and aahs spiced by the odd questioning of an answer adds to the liveliness of the quiz. Followed by more chatting as well as tea, coffee and biscuits as usual. If you have not come to an AGM before, do come and enjoy an informative and sociable occasion with the opportunity to have your say. The Table Top competition. The theme is the same each month to allow scope for as many as possible to join in: “From your own garden/allotment, five preferably flowering or evergreen stems displayed to best effect – of one or more variety.” Points are awarded each month, accumulating for a prize at the AGM. A warm welcome to you all from everyone on the committee. Aija Hamilton 39

WI Report We were all ‘banged to rights’ on the 5th February with a talk by Neil Sadler, a retired Police Officer from Sussex Police. He told us of his career and various incidents during his police life including the Brighton bombing of the Grand Hotel in which the IRA tried to kill most of the Conservative Government. Also the case of the little girl who managed to toddle 2½ miles on the top of Bury Hill eventually to be found alive and well in 1980. His daughter is also a Police Officer and she inherited his number 006!! Our next meeting will be on the 5th March when we will be given an insight into the Chestnut Tree charity by Major Tom Wye. Wisborough Greenfingers Tips If your thoughts have turned to new displays in pots or hanging baskets. Turn out the old compost and use it to add extra humus to your soil so improving its moisture holding ability. If you wish to reuse the compost do fork it over so it is not compact otherwise roots will find it hard to spread out to reach plenty of nutrients and water. If you choose to reuse the compost find a granular slow release fertiliser that will provide continuing nutrients for the new plants. Well fed plants will thrive. Remember that last years used up what was there then! 41

CYBER TIPS When I’m calling you-ooo-ooo! We had a late night last night (as I write); we had enjoyed a few games of Scrabble. So, this morning, we decided that we would lie in for an extra hour or so. At 7.55 am precisely the phone by our bed rang (a little louder than usual, I perceived). The only people to ring us at that time in the morning would be the family and it would be important. Or so I thought. I lifted the phone and announced myself in a way so as not to let the caller think that they had woken us up. I was quite proud of that! But… a snatch of a recorded voice and then silence. The little screen on the phone told me that the call had come from abroad. I guess, that because call centres tend to ring lists of numbers at once, I had failed to lift the receiver in time and probably someone else in the Village got the call instead. The Telephone Preference Service (TPS) is a central opt out register whereby individuals can express their wish not to receive unsolicited sales and marketing telephone calls. It is a legal requirement that companies do not make such calls to numbers registered with TPS. That’s all very well but TPS admits on their website www.tpsonline.org.uk that they are unable to block all calls especially recorded calls and many of those from abroad. They give advice on what to do if you wish to complain, but it is a bit of a palaver, particularly if the caller’s number does not appear on your little screen. If you are troubled by these unsolicited calls the website is worth visiting and it is certainly worth registering (you can check to see whether you already have) and to add other numbers. Whatever you do, do NOT press any buttons requested by the caller. You may hear something like “To avoid calls of this nature, then just press ‘9’”. Almost certainly this will be a costly mistake! Beware the Indian Love Call! Peter Edmonds

Weather Watch Wisborough Green Rainfall for January was 128mm (last year 237mm – 7 yr average is 126mm). Wettest place in the UK was at Cluannie Inn, Wester Ross recording 529mm – the driest at Waddington, Lincolnshire with 17mm. Highest temp for the UK in January was 16.5°C at Exeter. The lowest ever January temperature was recorded at Braemar – a very chilly minus 27.2°C. Climatologists disagree whether 2014 was the hottest on record – looking it up on Google it all gets a bit technical - one report says it was hotter by 0.02°C. Suffice to say it was warm! A sunny December - 156% of normal levels. At time of writing February seems dull so far!
Did you see the moon halo at the beginning of February? Known as a "22-degree halo" around the moon, it happens only rarely when the moon is at a particular angle to the earth and the frozen water crystals in the earth's atmosphere refract the light in a certain way, so that the area immediately below the moon is not lit up. In the left-hand picture, you should just be able to make out the planet Jupiter inside the halo. Weathervane
