Pastoral Letter There are few things worse than reading a book and finding that a page is missing. It’s worst of all when it’s the last page. Few of us would even start to read a book if we knew it would be cut short, yet, with Jesus, we sometimes do something similar. After the roller coaster of emotions over the Easter period and the great joy and celebration of His resurrection on Easter morning his Ascension can be virtually overlooked. One reason for this perhaps is that our account of the Ascension in days gone by was defined by the understanding that God is ‘up there’ and so Jesus is seen as vanishing up to heaven, with the disciples staring stupefied into the sky, as depicted by the image on the right and on the front cover of this magazine. Such language and imagery obscure the underlying message of the Ascension as surely as the cloud hid Jesus from the Apostle’s sight. Yet if the details of what happened are a mystery, the significance is clear enough. This was a watershed moment for the Apostles when they realised, for the first time, the full magnitude of who Jesus was. They had followed him during his ministry, believing him to be the Messiah; they rejoiced at his resurrection, greeting him as the risen Lord; but now they recognised that he was the Son of God, the King of kings and Lord of all. So don’t forget Ascension Day (Thursday 29th May) and above all don’t forget what it means! It reminds us that Jesus is greater than words can begin to express and it gives us the complete picture, without which our faith is infinitely poorer. Helen and Graham, Churchwardens

Church Notices BUILDING PROJECT Work is due to commence on the planned external works at the beginning of May, which include the drainage for the re-ordering in church, enlarged turning circle by the North porch and new lighting down the steps by the workhouse wall. Great care will be taken to ensure that there is no disturbance to the graves by the side of the steps and path, but if any relatives wish to talk to Helen (700567) or Graham (700793) regarding this matter, please don't hesitate to contact one of us. This work will inevitably cause some disruption, but we will endeavour to minimise the effect for all those using the church or walking through the churchyard. We ask for your patience and understanding. Thank you.

QUIET MORNING Unfortunately, after fifteen years, May Lines has decided to stand down from leading the Quiet Morning group, which is held in Alison Jekyll's barn, once a month. She and Wendy started the Quiet Morning to allow those whose lives were so busy they had no time to themselves. This enabled them to have a couple of hours each month of quiet reflection and fellowship. The group was so popular it became too large for one house and so they split it into two. Thank you, May, for your idea and for all the years you have given to leading one of the groups - you will be missed!

CHAIN OF PRAYER Worried about a loved one, a friend or yourself and would like prayers to be said by a chain of people? Contact Wendy 700295 or Gillian 700157 and they will start the chain by contacting the person next to them on the list and so it goes all the way round. A copy of the chain is on the notice board at the back of church. Prayer is a powerful and important part of life and one should never under estimate it's effect. You don't need to give any details of the problem just ask for prayers to be said and it will happen. Please note that it will be treated with total confidentiality..

VILLAGE CAR SCHEME If you, or anyone you know of, needs transport to get to a hospital, dentist or doctor's appointment please contact Jennie Burr on 700607 who will arrange for someone to drive you there. PASTORAL CARE DURING THE INTERREGNUM It is important for the Parish to be aware that during the interregnum there is still pastoral support for those who need it. Members of the Healing Group, Village Care Team, Prayer Groups and Social Development Team have come together under one umbrella to work as one, providing prayer and care where required. Communication and co-operation is crucial for this to work effectively, so if you hear of anyone who is in need of a Vicar, is ill, coming out of hospital, lonely, moving into the village or just in need of some kind words or prayers, please call Gillian Gough on 700157 and she will contact the relevant person. 6

Regular Church Activities PRAYER GROUP AND QUIET MORNINGS If anyone would like to spend half an hour in fellowship and prayer then they are most welcome at Wendy’s house (2 Clockhouse) on a Tuesday at 4.30, when prayers are said for the life of the Parish. On the third Friday of every month Quiet Mornings are held at the homes of Wendy Duff and Alison Jekyll at 10.30am. It is a peaceful time when you can relax, recharge your batteries and listen to music, poetry, readings and prayers. You will come away refreshed and ready to carry on! WIZZY TOTS Wizzy Tots, Wisborough Green’s baby and toddler group, meets at the Village Hall from 9.30 to 11.30 am on most Fridays during term time so feel free to stroll up from school or from Xpresso for a play. This month we meet on Fridays 2nd, 16th and 23rd May. Annual UNLOCK Walk - 3rd May 2014 Every year a group of Parishioners from Wisborough Green joins this annual walk visiting a variety of churches in London. The aim of the walk is to raise money for Unlock’s work in deprived urban areas across the UK and to raise awareness of the issues that Unlock exists to address. This year’s walk takes place on Saturday 3rd May between 9am and 5pm and the 8 mile route encompasses parts of Camden and Kentish Town with a good part of the walk along the canals. You can get involved by either joining us on the walk or by sponsoring those walking. There is a sponsor form at the back of the church. Open Gardens Weekend Saturday 7th & Sunday 8th June 2014 11am - 5 pm both days A selection of 12 beautiful Wisborough Green gardens will once again be made open to everyone during the Open Gardens weekend. Some of these gardens will be known to you from previous years and others will never have been open to the public before. The sizes and styles vary enormously but all are within walking distance of the Green. There will be a First World War theme to the event this year to mark the 100th Anniversary of the beginning of WW1. Coffees, Cream Teas and Cakes will be available as will the opportunity to play tennis and croquet. Something for everyone. Tickets will be £7.50 per person and will be available on the Open Days from a station on the green near the sundial and the gardens will be open between 11am – 5pm on both days. Wisborough Green Sideshows Society Friends of Wisborough Green Sideshows The Wisborough Green Sideshows Society successfully raises funds each Summer Bank Holiday by taking part in the Village Fete. The money we raise goes towards providing a New Year’s Dinner for the retired members of our village, a wonderful village tradition. We also gain additional, much needed funding, from our “Friends of Wisborough Green Sideshows” and we would like to invite you to join them. Basically you can become a Friend of Wisborough Green Sideshows by agreeing to give us a regular annual donation. We get the benefit of a known regular income to help us plan better our expenditure. Spitfire Simulator Group The prime purpose of our simulator project is to raise money for the RAF Benevolent Fund. Having run the simulator since 1st April 2013 I am very pleased with the local interest. To that end we have formed a club or group. Each person makes a small donation to the RAFBF ( £5 ) their name goes into a hat every month and the winner gets a flight. If you would like to join the group, contact Brian Smith on 01403 700346. Nature Notes Summer is coming at last and new life is burgeoning all around us. The trees are coming into leaf and hedges are greening up. Bluebells, primroses, golden dandelions and celandine, it’s lovely to see them bursting into bloom. This morning on Carter’s pond there were five tiny ducklings with a watchful parent. The heron has been a regular visitor this last few days and now we know why. So fingers crossed the youngsters make it.. Five buzzards were wheeling and calling over Carters Way this week – followed later that same day by a red kite. Three house martins passed over too, and one swallow has been reported. Carters Way often seems to be on a favourite flight path. They just need the swifts and they’ll have the set! While attempting to tidy up round our shed we disturbed some tiny frogs under an old builder’s sack, so that tidying will have to wait. There are newts in the pond, and we found two quite large fresh water mussels down by Moonsbrook, obviously washed up by the floods. They were open and had obviously been alive when they were stranded on the bank.. The streams round here are full of life, and surprises. I watched a ring-necked dove perching on the arm of a feeder, with one wing pointing straight up in the air. It was leaning over a little, and it closed the wing and opened it again. Then it leant the opposite way and raised the other one. It was raining, gently but steadily, and I realised it was taking a shower! We also have a bald rook – looking rather like a miniature vulture with no feathers at all on its head or neck, but it seems to be fine otherwise. Slightly less fine is our tame pheasant – he has been deposed. Nature has taken its course and he’s been relegated to the front area with only one faithful female in tow. A very smart young male now struts his stuff among all the others. Our chum is having extra seeds and raisins and seems fairly resigned to his fate - I still feed him on demand, which is pretty much every time he sees me. A peregrine has been spotted again over the quarry in Flexham. And a dormouse, still asleep, was inside a fallen nest in a Lodsworth garden. This was gently placed out of reach of two resident spaniels! Three or four deer are around locally, and one has eaten the leaves on our raspberry canes. It’s such a pretty young male, that it’s hard to be cross, but we’re putting up a few more defences for a while. I do love raspberries! Long-tailed tits have been flitting round our French doors, taking cobwebs for their nests, and the goldfinches are picking up our old dog’s hair for theirs. And starlings are nesting nearby too. They are such characters, with their mimicry and chatter they remind me of a gang of rowdy actors. Even so, we’re delighted to see them back! Sue J 13

A Woolly for a Woolly! Sue Pollard, our Theatre Manager of over 20 years is a demon knitter in her spare time, usually knitting jumpers for her gorgeous 2 year old Grandson Charlie. So she was the first person we thought of when tiny “Titch” (pictured) was born at midnight on 27th March 2014 and was shivering and unable to feed from her mother. Titch was the third of triplets and she had been lying awkwardly in her mothers’s womb. She was born with her feet bent backwards and unable to stand, although strong and eager for life. We fed her colostrum and made her comfortable for the night. Early the next morning Titch was still struggling to stand, but was thirsty and very loud! We continued bottle feeding her and Kelly and Jen splinted her back legs into their correct position using coffee stirrers and vet wrap (!). Immediately, Titch was up and tottering around. We moved her into the farmhouse to stop her being knocked over by her siblings and two days later removed the leg bandages and she was walking normally. Without her mum to keep her warm, we called on Sue (left) to rapidly knit a woolly for our beloved woolly – in Fishers Farm Red of course! Titch was very amenable when we popped on her wooly jumper (as you can see from the photo above) and is now warm and cosy at night. She doesn’t need to wear it in the day time, although we do put it on when she comes into the Farm Theatre so children can give her a lunchtime feed! Sue was so inspired she has joined the worldwide effort to knit jumpers for Australian penguins in peril (http://penguinfoundation.org.au/assets/Wildlife-rehabilitation/Littlepenguin-knitted-jumpers-pattern-2012.pdf) !

Oil/Gas Exploratory Well - An Update The news about the proposed application for Oil/Gas on the boundary of Kirdford and Wisborough Green parishes is that it's still stalled.... Currently the most likely date for consideration by the West Sussex Minerals Planning Committee looks like June 24th provided that the information asked for from Celtique Energie by the Planning Department on December 4th has been furnished. The best option is to watch the KKWG website or ring Jill on 01403 700395. Also in Sussex, the third application at Fernhurst for an Oil/Gas exploratory drill hole made by Celtique Energie is similarly awaiting a reply from the company for further information requested by the South Downs National Park. “Hold a Fish and Chip Supper to help spinal cord injured people rebuild lives after injury” - Spinal Injuries Association (SIA) Want to eat Fish and Chips, while raising money for charity? Hold a fish and chip supper on Friday 16th May 2014 whilst raising awareness of spinal cord injury and supporting SIA’s vital services. SIA will provide a fundraising pack containing hints and tips, recipes, invitations and donation envelopes. From Saxony To Sussex: Red Squirrels Captivate West Sussex Saleroom A pair of extremely rare Meissen figures of red squirrels lit up the saleroom at Bellmans Auctioneers on Wednesday 26th March, realising a hammer price of £45,000. Auctioneer and ceramics specialist Simon Garner began by warning spectators that they would “likely never see such objects together as a pair again”, before they were sold to general applause in the enthralled saleroom. The squirrels were modelled c.1750 by J. J. Kandler, Court Sculptor to Augustus the Strong from 1730. They sit on their haunches facing to the left and right, and bear indistinct blue crossed swords marks to their bases. During viewing, traders and private persons alike commented that they were “privileged to hold” such rare specimens. The consignment came from a private vendor on one of Bellmans’ routine valuation days, which are held every Tuesday and Thursday at the Wisborough Green Saleroom. The lot attracted international interest after being illustrated both on www.bellmans.co.uk and on www.thesaleroom.com, and were eventually sold to a prominent London dealer. Managing Director of Bellmans Auctioneers Jonathan Pratt commented “it has been an honour to have the opportunity to sell such a rare pair of Meissen figures. It is extraordinary to think that they were made in mid-18th century Saxony, by perhaps the most famous of all porcelain modellers, and 260 years later they re-appear at a sale in Sussex and sell for £45,000”.

Village Walk & Treasure Hunt Cricketers Arms – Wisborough Green - Saturday 5th April 2014. New Year’s Day seemed a perfect time to have a walk around the village, picking up ‘clues’, but it rained – and how it rained! None the less a few brave souls turned out and battled their way through the elements, with their resulting £1 entry fees raising £26.30 for Wyatt House. The good folk at Wyatt House spent this on a new electric kettle! We thought the weather would be kinder in April, so a similar event was organised for Saturday April 5th. Yes, the weather was a bit better, and certainly better than New Years Day. There were 19 clues, or questions, in total and the winners – Lucy & Geoff Cooper – got a score of 18½, a splendid effort. And the questions? They ranged from “What are clerestory windows?” (Windows on the walls of a nave, above the roof line of side aisles), to “What might be ‘A shower ambush’?” (Bramshaw House, of course!). All in all a jolly event and this time Wyatt House benefited to the tune of a mighty £36.30. Shall we do it again? Next New Year’s Day? Hmmm. We’ll see. Jim Gavin

Wisborough Green Youth Club Wisborough Green Youth Club Management Committee is pleased to announce that our Youth Club is going from strength to strength! Since Sara Thompsett took it on last year as Youth Leader in Charge, numbers now average about 30 children per session, which means we are actually up to optimum numbers! Sara is greatly assisted by Gemma Adsett, our Assistant Youth Leader, who is a huge asset to our Club and between them, they create a fun and exciting place for our local young people to meet most Thursday evenings at the Village Hall. So in the light of our Club's success, we really need some more Committee members to join our small team. There are no vacancies you have to fill so no pressure! We have fun meetings about 4 times a year, usually at one of the team's houses in the village. With your help, we can continue to run one of the most successful youth clubs in West Sussex! Cricket has started and the colts have been training for the the past 4 weeks, 1st XI have 2 home games in May playing Henfeild on the 10 th and Lewis priory on the 24th. The 2nd XI have Stirlands on the 17th and Pulborough on the 31st. Football Club. Games are over for the season but at the time of writing this report it is still difficult to judge where the teams will end up. The 1st XI are sitting in second position but having played more games than the teams immediately below them may finish fourth or fifth. Where the 2nd XI are going to end up is also difficult to judge but a mid table finish looks likely. Stoolball Club. No report this month. WGSCA. Still waiting for news on the Pavilion development. Holy Week and Ea A very big thank you to everyone who helped during Holy Week and Easter Weekend to visiting clergy for leading us in our worship, to Malcolm and the choir for providing the music, to the church cleaning party and the flower arrangers for making the church so beautiful and to everyone who has supported us. The week started with Palm Sunday and we were delighted to welcome Rev Richard Jackson, Bishop elect of Lewes and Hastings, to our 10.30am Palm Sunday Eucharist service. His arrival was somewhat unconventional as he arrived in Wisborough Green on his Harley Davidson motorbike and came into the church with his helmet under his arm and dressed head to toe in black leather. This must be a first for a visiting priest! He gave an insightful and thought provoking sermon about how to live life as a true Christian and after the service chatted to members of the congregation over a cup of coffee. We wish him every blessing in his new post as Bishop and pray that he will lead with integrity and inspire those around him. In the evening we were treated to a moving performance of The Crucifixion by John Stainer.

For the remainder of Holy Week, we were very blessed to have Brother Angelo with us to lead most of the services culminating in two wonderfully uplifting services at 8am and 10.30am on Easter Day. Brother Angelo is a Franciscan who is one of our very hardworking visiting priests and is giving marvellous support to the church through the interregnum and he always speaks powerfully from his own life experiences and his clear faith. Maundy Thursday and Good Friday are solemn days but very important in our Easter journey and then on Easter Day we had over 160 people, including over 20 children, in church for our two stimulating services. Neighbourhood Watch More Phone Scams At approximately 12.30pm today (Wednesday 2 April) a homeowner received a call from someone claiming to be PC Ian Baker from Paddington Police Station. This male stated that the homeowner's bank cards had been cloned and used and that he had two people in custody. He then suggested that the homeowner should hang up the phone and call the bank to confirm this. Fortunately on this occasion the homeowner called their bank from a different phone and was able to confirm with their bank that there had been no fraudulent activities on their card. When the male called back and was challenged by the homeowner, he hung up. Please be aware of this scam. If you or anyone you know receives a call similar to this please let us know immediately. These fraudsters leave the phone line open in order to make the homeowner believe they are speaking to their bank etc when in fact they are speaking to the same people. Further to our report in the March Edition of Ad Vincula...... Operation Edisto - Man scammed out of £17,000 – Unfortunately another elderly local resident has fallen victim to this fraud and has lost a significant amount of money. Please advise any elderly or vulnerable friends and relatives about this fraud. No matter how convincing the person sounds the Police or your bank would NEVER phone and ask somebody to withdraw large sums of money for collection by a courier or taxi.

Call 101 to help stop illegal off-roading in the countryside People witnessing illegal or anti-social off-road driving on paths in the countryside are being called on to report it to the police using the new 101 phone number. Sussex Pathwatch is a special service set up to help protect the safety of everyone using rights-of-way, fields and woodland to prevent the damage that illegal offroading can cause. Anyone can report an offence by calling 101 or emailing: contact.centre@sussex.pnn.police.uk Angela Ward, ranger for the South Downs National Park, said: “Most people driving off-road do so legally and with consideration for other people. Unfortunately there are a small minority driving illegally. Wisborough Green History - H Balchin Ltd. (concluded) The company was also an undertakers up to the beginning of the Second World War operating from the same premises as their building business. After a death, a Balchins employee visited the deceased's home to measure the body for a coffin. These were handmade and, after a death, local people recall being kept awake at night by the carpenters' hammering and sawing as they made the coffin overnight immediately after a death. There was no chapel of rest in those days and thus it was important that that burial should take place as soon as possible, particularly in the warmer months. The deceased remained at home until Balchins delivered the new coffin and put the body into it for the funeral service and burial. Balchins were funeral directors but later they usually used Freeman Brothers of Horsham for this function. Balchins gave up the undertaking business at the start of the war, but retained an interest becoming an agent for Freeman Brothers. Continuing the history of Balchin's Builders, the wooden shack attached to the showroom, and referred to last month, was built during the period of James Balchin's trading, i.e. before c1920. This building was known to have been occupied c1912 by Balchin and Turner, a photographers business and almost certainly c1895 although I don't have explicit evidence. The co-owner of the business was almost certainly Frank Balchin, elder brother of Harold. Frank also ran a bicycle repair business and he also built new bicycles from components and spare parts. His workshop was in the barn and he also used the wooden shack as a shop. He was called up in 1914 to the Royal Engineers and survived the war, but died in 1918 from Spanish Flu. There was a radio and gramophone shop around that time. This was probably run by Cecil as he was a radio engineer before he moved to Sevenoaks. Horace James used to work in Balchinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s office and set-up a business in the shack called The Handy Shop that sold tobacco, confectionery, newspapers, ice creams, wools, etc. He passed the business to his son Maurice in 1938 who in turn passed it to his brother Geoffrey in 1940 when he was called up. Maurice had worked for Balchinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s as an electrical engineer on televisions, etc. with Mr Abbott. Balchins sold that part of the business to Abbott who traded from the shack as Abbotts Electrical before moving to old bakery (now Old Mill Cafe and Zest), in 1963. Much of this information was kindly provided by Jim Balchin (Harold's son) to whom I am most grateful. He worked for his father in the yard and was a skilled carpenter. Although the business closed in 1984, Jim continued on his own for a while. Finally, some corrections to last month's article. Harold wasn't the oldest of the seven children; Ami was the oldest followed by Frank. When Balchin's ceased trading in 1984, a developer acquired the workshops and subsequently let it to WSAT. Recipe of the Month ALPHA OVEN BAKED RED PEPPER RISOTTO This vegetarian option which was served for supper one week on the Alpha Course proved very popular with vegetarians and meat eaters alike. It is very simple to make and no standing over the stove stirring until the risotto is ready. 2 tbsp oil 1 large onion, chopped 300g risotto rice 100ml white wine (optional, or use more stock) 400g can of chopped tomatoes 2 large red peppers, skinned and cut into small pieces 500ml vegetable stock Handful flat-leaf parsley, chopped Handful basil leaves - optional Parmesan, to serve Heat the oven to 200C/fan 180C/gas 6 1.

To skin the peppers cut them in half and remove the core and seeds. Place under the grill to allow the skin to bubble and char. Place in a plastic bag whilst hot, seal and leave to cool. The skins should then slip off quite easily.

Heat the oil in an ovenproof pan, then fry the onion for a few minutes until softened.

Add the rice, coating it in the oil and stir for a minute.

Pour in the wine, if using, stirring until absorbed, then pour in the tomatoes, peppers and 400ml of the stock.

Cover and bake in the oven for 25mins until the rice is tender and creamy. Check the seasoning and add some salt and pepper to taste.

Stir in the remaining hot stock and parsley and scatter with parmesan and basil leaves and serve. Helen V

Wey & Arun Canal Trust Walks to offer new perspective on canal heritage Canal cruises will no longer be the only way to gain an insight into the history of the Wey & Arun Canal with the launch of this year’s guided walk programme. The Wey & Arun Canal Trust (WACT) will be offering guided tours each month from the Canal Centre in Loxwood, West Sussex, to give visitors a chance to find out more about the history of the canal, the restoration work on the waterway and more about the history of Loxwood village itself. Walk 1 (2.5 miles) will take place on 29 May, 24 July & 25 September. Walk 2 (4.5 miles) will be take place on June & 28 August. The meeting time for each is 9.30am at the Canal Centre, with the walk starting at 9.45am. The Macmillan Story told by Jenny Kearn Well here goes! We started our Billingshurst Macmillan Support Group 18 years ago because our local doctors’ surgery had asked if we might consider doing some fundraising for the Macmillan Unit that was then based at the King Edward VII Hospital at Midhurst where there was a 12 bed hospice unit, which gave great support to our local area. We gathered together a few unsuspecting souls and started up on April 1! Since that time of course, the hospital has closed down, but fortunately our amazing group of Macmillan doctors and nurses, not to mention volunteers are based at the Community Hospital at Midhurst in the Pearson Unit. They are currently dealing with 250 local people there who desperately need Macmillan's unique support. No residential beds there, but beds at local hospices are available to them. We are so lucky to have this dedicated team locally which is unique in the country, although another two of this type are being considered. We are a free-lance volunteer fundraising group. Our description I am afraid, because we do what we can without the pressure of ‘targets’, although I have to say that we are constantly comparing event with event and proceeds with proceeds! Our events range from monthly film nights in Billingshurst, Pulborough and less often in Rudgwick, showing newly released films provided and managed by Cinemobile. We always run a raffle, many prizes being donated by kind friends, sell coffee/tea and biscuits or a glass of wine and we always sport a ‘sales table’ with note-lets and homemade preserves. We have tables at local shows, flower shows and any other event that we might be lucky enough to be invited to. We have an annual BBQ at Adversane – 100 people attending – which you have to book for – June 8 this year! So book early on 782105! Our biggest event is a 2-day Steam Rally at Balls Cross, admission only £2.50 for adults, August 30 and 31 this year – put it in your diary now because it is great fun. Two local markets, Wisborough Green and Pulborough, will find us behind a cake table selling flowers and tomatoes in season from local growers as well. Our Bridge Teas boast ‘ the best Bridge Tea in Sussex’ not our words, but those of our guests. People are so kind! We have catered for several funeral teas and our local vicar refers to us as ‘Wakes R’Us’. This year we have two wedding BBQ’s booked, so maybe we can now say ‘Weddings R’Us’ too. Wisborough Green Horticultural Society Everyone is invited to The Plant Sale Saturday 10th May 2014 at 2 pm on the Millennium Green near the Cricketers Pub. Last year the Sale was terrific, hectic and full of gardening advice and laughter, followed by coffee and homemade cake. Without your contributions in all aspects it would not have been so productive in fund raising or fun. Plants can be dropped off in the morning on site on the gravel space by the open garage. Do bring what you can even though it may not look great. Indoor and outdoor plants all welcome as are garden sundries and pots. Bring a friend or new neighbour for the experience! With any luck the fritillaries will still be nodding around the Sundial, provided by the WGHS for everyone's pleasure. On Sunday 15th June, it is our delightful Horticultural Show. The last two year's terrible weather did not deter entries then, so what is in store for this year? Look around and have a go. Garden plants and indoor plants can be entered as well as early vegetables. Everyone's microclimate growing conditions are different so your growing conditions may suit the weather we will get. Flower arrangers can do a miniature 10cmx10cmx10cm or a “Woodland Walk” or for the men, be flummoxed by “Terracotta”. Bakers of all ages might bake Four chocolate brownies, win a prize and eat the exhibit for tea. Everyone in the Junior Section could grow three lettuces in a container – only ages displayed. Anti slug defences at the ready. An Eighth Wonder of the World for Wisborough Green is very challenging for the under 16s or is it? All classes are open to ALL including children (who may enter free of charge). The junior section provides for three different age groups. Do look up the classes and rules in the Handbook which all members have but which are also available at the Village Shop. The rules are to help exhibitors. Above all. come and enjoy the exhibits and think about exhibiting. muttering that you grew one even better or made a better scone?

Wealden Trefoil Guild Wealden Trefoil Guild met on April 1st in St Mary’s room and welcomed 2 new members, Janet Ashman and Sarah Moore, and Mrs Jane Goldsmith MAR speaker to give a talk on and demonstration of Reflexology. Reflexology is based on the principle that there are reflex points in the hands and feet which relate to every organ in the body. It is used to rebalance the body as complementary therapy and originated 4000 BC. Jane gave us a brief history and then gave us a basic demonstration on the feet of 2 members. The Guild had had various invitations to visit other Guilds Outings and Guiding Events which included a trip to New Zealand in 2015 and these were discussed and names taken of those interested in attending. The Guild had been set a challenge by our Chairman Ruth Isaacs to knit some squares for blankets or shawls for the Queen Mary’s Clothing Guild and a few members brought some they had knitted to the meeting in lovely bright colours. 1 member had also knitted 3 children’s jumpers for the same organisation. The Guild was also asked for volunteers to help at a big Brownie Birthday event at Brinsbury College June 21 st. The next meeting will be a visit to the Theatre on May 10th, at The Capitol, Horsham for ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ . WI Report Our April meeting was the scene of much dead flesh, sharp knives and pieces of meat being flung into white buckets! We were treated to a master class by Robert and Sharon of Rawlings, butchers of Cranleigh, in how to butcher a lamb, half a pig and the expert making of the biggest sausage rolls that I have ever seen. All the joints, chops, steaks and ribs looked absolutely wonderful and were a real lesson in the use of very sharp knives in small spaces! Thank you Robert and Sharon. We had a very successful Jumble Sale at the end of March and was a lesson in the art of re-cycling. We would like to thank all of you who helped in any way, especially Stephen Nunn of SCRIPT who took the entire jumble that we were unable to sell. Many thanks all, it was certainly worth buying the chocolate biscuits as bribery! Our next meeting will be on the 1st May when we will be discussing the resolution that will be put forward at the Annual Meeting in June, namely: “The NFWI notes that three people die every day whilst waiting for an organ transplant. We call on every member of the WI to make their wishes regarding organ donation known, and to encourage their families and friends, and members of their local communities to do likewise”. Vital accessory - small watering can/plastic milk container. Vital age appropriate knowledge/help why and when to water.  Donate a small patch of decent tilled ground and a bush tomato plantlet. Weather Watch Wisborough Green rainfall for March was 33mm (last year 99mm – 6 yr average was 56mm). Wettest for the month was Cluanie Inn, Wester Ross with 352mm Highest temp for the UK was 20.9°C at St James Park, London with the lowest recorded -6.8°C at Redesdale Camp, Northumberland. CYBER TIPS Take time to think! Either scams are getting better, and I think they are, or we are just still not on our guard. Someone I know well was nearly caught out a week or two ago. They received a call from a person that said sums of £800 and £2000 had been taken from their bank account and to call the bank immediately. A very plausible conversation had taken place with a nice sounding lady from Edinburgh. It included a security check and “How’s the weather with you?” “Don’t worry,” the lady said, “if you are worried about this call just ring off and dial the number on the back of your card.” The line went dead when my friend asked to speak to the supervisor. It’s so credible to the unwary: The technique is to create panic and then soothe. This type of call may not at first seem to be suspicious, after all it is now oozing sympathy, friendliness and kindness, to say nothing of efficiency, but you should always take time to think. Put the phone down then listen for a dialling tone and dial the number of a friend. There will be no dialling tone if the call is bogus because the caller has not put his phone down leaving the line open. Furthermore you will not be troubling your friend because the original caller, but a different voice, will answer you with something like “Barclays Bank Customer Service, can I help you?” and you will know then for sure what has happened. You have not been had this time and of course no money has been withdrawn. But nevertheless do check with your bank! Do change your password as well. I have confirmed this: your bank will close your compromised account and open a new one for you on the same day, safely transferring your funds as well.
