Pastoral Letter I wonder if one’s inner soul can be judged by the library one keeps? I confess to mine being a heavy proportion of Horticultural Information and, for the most part, the balance is of a Spiritual Christian nature with a collection of travel books and period novels. It is said that for each religious book we read one should read five others. Could that be to encourage us to be aware of not becoming too singularly minded in our thoughts and contact with others? The Horticultural and the Spiritual are very strongly connected. God created our beautiful world and gave it to us to love, protect and enjoy. What better way of using these gifts is there but to grow our food, cultivate the flowers, and know the benefits of natural healing. Here in Wisborough Green we are blessed with good examples of all three; our agriculture is strong, our gardens are our own private paradise, and we all draw from time to time on health benefits from plant material, even if we are not aware of it at the time. Our Harvest Service is on September 28th and will be a wonderful opportunity to praise God for his creation. God’s creation of the soil, however, does need from time to time a little extra feeding. I am, I know, a generous person when it comes to feeding. In the horticultural talks that I give I never cease to be surprised that people on the whole forget to feed their plants well. Nearly always my answer to their problem plant is “if you remembered to feed your children, then please do the same for your plants”. My potting shed shelves are filled with plant feeds, and when checking their content or using them I realise that we need to be fed just as much as our beautiful plants. I don’t mean by that a double dose of eggs and bacon. I mean that we need to be fed spiritually. Just as one dose of plant feed is not normally enough, so it is with us, we need a constant understanding of why we are here and what our lives are all about. Just as there are many different feeds for various plants, there is a huge amount of material for us to dig into to feed ourselves. We need to refer to the Bible, to books written by authors whose opinions and interpretations we love and respect, we need help (Gen. 16. 1-4 Avoid striving to fulfil God’s promises in your own strength. Doing so always results in self-induced problems). There is much material available for us to pick and choose our reading, and there are many courses, house groups, and convenient friendly ways to enhance our faith. Hebrews Ch.1.” Growing in Godliness” ….at all times believers are to help encourage and strengthen each other….. A new house group is starting at No.2. Glebe Way, Thursday evenings 18th September 7-30 – 9-30 pm, and everyone that comes will receive a warm welcome and hopefully a new spiritual dynamic to think upon. You know, the art of feeding plants is to know their particular growing requirements, whether the need is for more potash, more nitrogen, a helping of ericaceous compost, a little more light, or shade and so on, and it is exactly the same for us, we each have individual requirements, and perhaps through learning more and sharing knowledge we may grow to perfection! Maybe we could ask Roland to include a Christian “Good Read” in AD VINCULA, why keep one such to ourselves? Doris Smallwood 3

PASTORAL CARE DURING THE INTERREGNUM It is important for the Parish to be aware that during the interregnum there is still pastoral support for those who need it. Members of the Healing Group, Village Care Team, Prayer Groups and Social Development Team have come together under one umbrella to work as one, providing prayer and care where required. Communication and co-operation is crucial for this to work effectively, so if you hear of anyone who is in need of a Vicar, is ill, coming out of hospital, lonely, moving into the village or just in need of some kind words or prayers, please call Gillian Gough on 700157 and she will contact the relevant person.
Prayer CHAIN OF PRAYER Worried about a loved one, a friend or yourself and would like prayers to be said by a chain of people? Contact Wendy 700295 or Gillian 700157 and they will start the chain by contacting the person next to them on the list and so it goes all the way round. A copy of the chain is on the notice board at the back of church. Prayer is a powerful and important part of life and one should never under estimate its effect. You don't need to give any details of the problem just ask for prayers to be said and it will happen. Please note that it will be treated with total confidentiality. Prayers are offered for parishioners who are in special need, especially the sick and frail. Please advise either of the churchwardens of any persons or situations you would like remembered in this way. All those living in particular roads are prayed for regularly, the whole parish being covered over a 12-week cycle: Week beginning: 7 September 14 September 21 September 28 September 6

From the Editor Welcome to the September edition of Ad Vincula. It seems that no sooner do we finish one edition, it’s time for the next one!! Firstly, many congratulations to Fishers Farm Park for their awards (see below). In addition to the usual articles, this month we have an article on the official opening of Southlands Lock on the Wey and Arun Canal (p12) - although it happened in June, this is the first chance I’ve had to include it. Also, please sponsor Judy Moorey in her abseil attempt in aid of Family Support Work (p13). We have an update from Climbing Bears (p13), notice of this year’s Harvest Festival (p15), a report of a special spitfire event using Brian Smith’s simulator (p21), a report on the successful outcome (from our point of view) of the oil/gas planning application (p31) and information about this year’s “Link to Hope” shoebox appeal (p33) just to mention a few. I hope you find the magazine interesting and useful and, as usual, I would love to hear from you with any comments or suggestions. The magazine can also be viewed on line at: http://www.wisboroughgreenparishchurch.org.uk/index.php/parish-magazine Roland Zilz

Nature Notes I have a very soft spot for all amphibians, especially frogs and toads. So I was saddened this week on walking down the lane early, following an overnight downpour. After the long dry spell, some of them had been drawn out by the rain, possibly looking to bathe in the puddles that always appear on our road. We counted at least 15 or 16 of them, mostly small, and I was sad to see them obviously flattened by traffic overnight. So now I will keep my eyes peeled when driving at night after rain, and make sure it is only leaf blowing on the road, and not one of my frog friends hopping across. A couple of days later, I was surprised to find an extremely small frog on the pool cover, and then that evening, in much the same place, an even smaller toad.
Frog
Toad
As you can see, it was less than half as long as a matchstick. (Apologies for the poor quality of that one’s picture - due to inefficient use of artificial light by yours truly, and not our editor’s fault!) They were both removed to safety, so I hope they didn’t decide to have a walk down the lane later. Nobody seems to know why these minute aquatics are turning up so late in the summer. But let’s hope they will shortly find a safe overwintering place, somewhere snug and peaceful... Also at night, I came across a group of snails clustered around some scraps of bird food on the grass. Could they have been eating it? Do snails ever eat birdfeed mix or peanut granules, I wonder? Has anyone else ever seen this? I’d be interested to know. Several ravens have been settled up in Bedham for the last few weeks. Their croaking call is unmistakable once you’ve heard it. They are much larger than a crow and rather solitary as a rule – impressive birds. And we have a tawny owl that sits in an oak tree and calls each night for half an hour or so, before flitting silently off into the darkness. At the other end of the size range I saw a merlin zooming over a garden near Sullington. Not much bigger than a swift, with the same scimitar shaped wings, it’s the smallest British hawk, fast and fearless, even when chased by a group of crows as this one was. Then over in Plaistow a man mowing his ‘golf patch’ found his machine surrounded by house martins, 20 or more all swooping around him, chasing the insects he was disturbing. He was absolutely thrilled, he said. We wonder if the remnants of Hurricane Bertha blowing in have upset a few species and started them thinking of setting off back to southern climes. Won’t be long now – Autumn approaches! We wish them all God Speed and a safe return next year! Sue J

Wey & Arun Canal Trust Canal restoration reopens historic Wey & Arun Lock Nearly 200 years after Southland lock on the Wey & Arun Canal was built, restoration work is complete and boats can use it once again. The official opening of the restored lock was marked by a special event organised by the Wey & Arun Canal Trust (WACT) on Saturday 21 June to celebrate completion of the three-year project. More than 150 people attended the event to see Mr Simon Carter officially open the lock and hear music from the Friary Guildford Brass Band before celebrating with a barbecue lunch. The lock was originally built between 1813 and 1816 but was demolished in the 1930s when the canal had fallen into disuse and many of the bricks reused on other local building projects.
VIP boat arrived at Southland lock. Mrs Sally Carter alighting from the boat (lady in pink)
Reconstruction of the lock was a major challenge for the Trust, not just financially but also logistically as the site is located more than a mile from the nearest public road. WACT chairman Sally Schupke said that the Trust is very grateful for the help of the local lando wner s in easing the
logistics of the work. “None of this would have been possible without the enthusiasm of the adjacent landowners. Their support made all the difference,” she said. More than £125,000 was reduced from the cost of the £0.5M reconstruction work thanks to the Trust’s workforce of volunteers led by Project Manager Eric Walker. Nonetheless, the project still called for the engineering expertise of others including Burras Piling, the main contractor for the piling behind the new lock walls and Hargreaves Foundry in Halifax who made and fitted the lock gates. With Southlands lock completed, the focus of the restoration work will now move northwards. WACT is working on major restoration schemes near Bramley at the northern end of the canal and near Dunsfold at the summit of the water wa y. Take the Plunge Abseil for FSW In a mad moment I signed on to 'Take the Plunge' from Peacehaven Cliffs on September 20th. The Chichester Diocesan Family Support Work is celebrating a special year starting in September. It is 125 years since FSW started its work of help to children and the whole family in Sussex. The world has totally changed but sadly not the need for FSW. After enrolling for the abseil I experienced real terror with dry mouth and knocking knees!! I remembered all the times I had refused Roger's invitation for a walk along the cliffs ( l a u g h t e r f r o m t h e f a m i l y! ) . Nonchalantly I told my granddaughter Eleanor, who is 12, expecting her admiration and amazement. But my pride was burst when she said 'Oh I'll do that with you Grandma'!! Then I remembered all the 100 year olds who jump down the Spinnaker Tower with Meridian's Fred Dineage as though it is nothing - and felt rather small!! I have to say it IS quite a big thing for me – so I am asking you to sponsor Eleanor and a very old lady as they take the plunge for FSW. Sponsor form will be in church or phone 700700 Judy Moorey 01403 700700

Minibus Theatre Trip to
Saturday 25th October (4.00pm matinee performance) at The Mill Studio, Yvonne Arnaud Theatre, Guildford We shall be taking the Minibus (both buses if necessary) to this performance of ‘Neville’s Island’ Four out-of-condition, middle-aged businessmen sent off on a team-building exercise in the Lake District succeed in being the first people ever to get shipwrecked on an island on Derwentwater! Bound in by fog, menaced by the wildlife and cut off from the world, this perfunctory middle-class exercise turns into a carnival of recrimination, French cricket and sausages. What should have been a bonding process for Gordon, Angus, Roy and Neville turns into a muddy, bloody fight for survival. This ‘comedy in thick fog’, was written by Tim Firth of ‘Calendar Girls’ fame. ‘……deliciously dark and funny…..’ (Charles Spencer, ‘Daily Telegraph’)
The cast includes: Graham Collier, David Hemsley-Brown Nick Lund and David Webb Directed by: Richard Parish Tickets for the performance are £13.00 and the Minibus fare will be £4.50 (+£2.00 Visitor’s membership, to cover insurance, if you are not already a member of the Minibus Association) Please ring: RICHARD PARISH (01403700628) as soon as possible to book both your ticket and your seat on the bus 17

“Dawn Patrol” - The Spitfire Experience
T
HE LONGEST DAY dawned bright on Saturday 21st June, as thirty pilots began to assemble for a Dawn Patrol exercise in the Supermarine Spitfire Mark IX parked up under a blister hanger at RAF West Malling in Kent. The rising sun glinted on the iconic aircraft’s sleek shape highlighting the initials JE-J adorning its flank. “EN398 cleared for take off!” as the roar of the Rolls Royce Merlin engine filled the air. Dawn Patrol was an idea hatched by Brian Smith whose Spitfire simulator occupies one half of his barn, decked out as a WWII crew room, at Wheelers Farm in Wisborough Green. Thirty pilots were to “fly” thirty sectors visiting as many former RAF stations that took part in the Battle of Britain 74 years ago. Each pilot made a donation of £30 to the RAF Benevolent Fund. The first sector, from West Malling to the famous Biggin Hill and on to North Weald in Essex, was flown by former RAF jet fighter pilot, Jeremy Mudford of Plaistow. The exercise continued, landing at various airfields in Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire and as far west as RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire. The return course led to Bembridge on the Isle of Wight, RAF Westhampnett, Goodwood these days, Shoreham and out to Manston, in Northeast Kent, before returning, in the late afternoon, to West Malling once again. Refreshments were served all day in the “NAAFI” tent and in the evening everyone repaired to the “Officers’ Mess”, aka The Cricketers Arms, for a Ladies’ Night and a splendid dinner. A magnificent £1,268 was raised for our charity. This was the first project of its kind for “The Spitfire Experience” a full-scale replica cockpit simulator, Brian’s Brainchild, that has been entertaining its customers for over a year now raising money for the RAF Benevolent Fund. The Wisborough G Cricket Club. Website: www.wisboroughgreencc.co.uk Recently we have seen some excellent performances from several players in the club. Tim Dodd has hit the ball a long way in the 1st team and managed to score the only century to date. Ben Thatcher has taken several 5 wicket hauls for the 1st XI and Nick Klein and Harry Sedgwick along with a youthful John Pleasant have all taken 5 wicket hauls for the second XI. The 1st XI are currently 3rd in the league. A successful season is nearly over with only 1 league game and a couple of friendlies to play. At the time of writing this article it is difficult to judge the final League positions. The 1st XI, I think, will finish mid table either 4th or 5th with the 2nd XI finishing 2nd to bottom at the foot of the league. The seniors problem this year has been the shortage of players in both 1st and 2nd XI. We had four first team and three second team players leave over the winter and only managed to gain one new player. We have, however, had several excellent performances from some of our colts this year. We could really do with at least six new players for next year so if you fancy a game or have any contact with players who would like to play for Wisborough Green please put them in contact with me (01403 700927) or get them to visit the club web site and e-mail the club. The junior section of the club have finished their fixtures for the year and have ended up with some success and some remarkable performances. Under 16’s and under 10’s have both finished 3rd in the league. Under 14’s are 6th and the Under 12’s are 9th. Several players have represented the club at County level throughout the season of which we are very proud. The new Roller has arrived and we are still fund-raising for it, having raised just over half of the £9000.00 cost. Any donations would be very welcome. Maintenance of both grounds and squares is about to be carried out and any help anybody can offer would be much appreciated. Please ring me (01403 700927). Football Club. The new season has just started and I believe the club has several new players this year and are trying to succeed in promotion having just failed last year. The club and supporters would like to thank Paul Penfold (Spike) who has hung up his linesman’s boots (flag) after many years with the club. I am sure we will still see him around. Training is on a Tuesday evening at 6pm all are welcome please contact Sasha at the Cricks on (01403 700369) for further information. WGSCA. The season begins to come to an end by the end of July, with friendly games played against local teams who are not in our league throughout August and into September if we are lucky. The latter part of July saw games played against Winterfold and Rudgwick , which we lost….and Pulborough and Midhurst, which we won! However, one weekend in August is very important to the team and the continuation of the club as a whole……..the Wisborough Green Stoolball Tournament. Now to be honest, I was really looking forward to writing about how the day had been a great success, the 12 teams who came to play throughout the day had enjoyed themselves and that we had raised a lot of money. Unfortunately, the great British weather put paid to that. Despite our fingers being crossed, Sarah and I stood on the balcony of the Pavilion at 8am on the 10th August in what can only be described as a downpour and made the decision that the tournament had to be cancelled. Sadly it is not as easy as just rearranging it to another Sunday. With the other teams booked to attend other tournaments and obviously the Green booked for other sports it is a logistical nightmare…..and with three pitches needed to be set up, we use the whole green. However, in true Village style, I hope that we can plan something in September that will help us raise funds for the club….and involve a few of you maybe? 3 clubs have folded in the last 2 years within our league….and Wisborough Green is determined it will not be the 4th. SO, keep your eyes open for announcements and we will keep our fingers crossed…..again!!!! Clare Steere
PACT News Fete in the Park – was a success once again, with cream teas and wonderful weather you can’t go wrong! Festival Service – was a wonderful evening with the witty and engaging speaker Robin Simon, some fantastic Handel pieces played by Daria van den Bercken – all of this in addition to the accomplished Festival Chorus. Thanks to the generosity of those who served at / donated to both of the above events, a substantial gift has been given to The Sussex Snowdrop Trust – thank you all! Kids Club has just finished in Petworth Primary School with a great turn-out and a theme of God the Creator – lots of fun was had including family lunches with everyone altogether after each morning's activities. Thank you to all those who donated towards and helped to make the Cheese, Wine & Pate Party in July such a success. A special thank-you to Gill Parish and Val Mourilyan for coordinating the amazing array of food and drink and to Liz Harris for her help on the evening; to Richard Parish and Gillian Gough for running the bar; and to Tim Harris and Keith Carter for arranging the tombola. It was a very enjoyable evening and raised £398.52 - over and above this, we also received some very generous donations amounting to almost £2,500. The Minibus Association is a charity reliant entirely on unpaid volunteers. If you feel you might be able to contribute one or two mornings or afternoons a month as a driver or escort, you would be warmly welcomed. Please do contact me on 700492 when I can explain exactly what is involved. Richard Parish will, once again, be taking the minibus to the theatre on Saturday 25 October (see page 17 for details). Finally, don’t forget if you want to go on the Special Autumn Outing to Chichester Festival Theatre (see page 25), the deadline for bookings is Thursday 18 September. Pat Farmer

Wisborough Green Histo Following on from the School Road butcher's shop articles, I wanted to complete the story by describing the shop that acquired the butcher business and the others in its vicinity, viz. the 'new' shops opposite The Three Crowns. In the article on Balchins builders, I referred to the shack that was attached to the righthand side of their showroom. This was a small shop selling household items, etc. (and not confectionery, etc as I stated in the Balchins article!) and which had a varied and interesting history. It had been in existence since before 1910 when it was a radio and gramophone shop. In around 1925 the Balchins showroom was built and attached to the shop. For a period up to 1938 the shop was selling tobacco, confectionery, newspapers, ice creams and some haberdashery. It was named The Handy Shop and owned by Horace James. In 1938, the shop was taken over by Horace's son, Maurice, when Horace became sub-postmaster and moved into White Chestnuts from where the post office operated. However in 1940 the shop was taken over by Geoffrey James when Maurice was called up. The range of goods remained as before except that
Balchins and old Handy Shop c1941 Geoffrey provided a service doing radio repairs. I have included a photo of the shop with Horace James outside and which was taken in the early days of the war. The Handy Shop run by Geoffrey James transferred across the road to White Chestnuts in 1947 when the post office and telephone exchange that had been there since 1904 moved out. The old Handy Shop became the surgery for doctors Vine and Woods. They ran a part-time surgery that operated in conjunction with the Loxwood surgery. A facility that no longer operates was doctors leaving prescription medicines for patients' collection in a white box at the side of the surgery. Their occupancy continued until they moved to the Vine Room in 1953 when it ceased to be Pond 28
ory - The “NEW Shops Cottage occupied by Reg Cheeseman, this being one of the four Almshouse Cottages into which part of the workhouse had been converted in 1920. The shop then became an electrical shop named Abbotts run by Horace James and Mr Abbott until 1961 when the business transferred to the new shop that had been created when the bakery was rebuilt as described in the bakery article in May 2011. Finally, the shop was taken over by Phyllis Cellier and David Evershed and renamed Panda (derived from the 'P' of Phyllis, and the 'Da' of David with 'an' in between) and selling household items, haberdashery and fancy items such as jigsaw puzzles etc. When Balchins relocated to Balchins Close in 1963, their barn was demolished but the showroom and Panda continued for another two years while the two new shops (currently occupied by Churchill's and SCRIPT) were built. When completed in 1965, Panda moved to the left-hand new shop and the old buildings demolished shortly after. They stayed there until 1967 when David died. The shop remained empty until 1969 when it was taken over by Bill and Pauline Mann who sold greengrocery and flowers but kept the name Panda. In 1987, their son Arthur took over the business when Bill died, although Pauline continued to live there. At some stage, Mrs Sellers took over the business but I have no idea when this was or even if I've got the name right; can anyone help please? Finally, in 1994, Churchill's, the equine estate agent, acquired the shop. Returning to the butchers shops from the previous issue, I wrote that the business transferred to a new shop opposite The Three Crowns. The new owner, Albert Price, retained the School Road shop's name, viz. S Peacock. He ran this until 1974 when the business was acquired by Kevan Haycock. This was still a butcher's shop but he also sold poultry, eggs and cream. He died in 1989 and the butcher's business was taken over by H J Grimes. He ran this until 1993 when it became an office for Richard True and partner who used it as an office for their fish and chip shop business in Billingshurst, Horsham and Ifold until 1998. (I'm a bit hazy on this - can anyone confirm this please?). From that date until 2012 the shop was operated by W isborough Kitchens; finally, the charity shop SCRIPT run by Sarah and Stephen Nunn has operated the shop to the present time. Oil/Gas Exploration - KKWG Update Kirdford and Wisborough Green Communities 1 - Celtique Energie 0 If you did not already hear about the proposed Oil/Gas Exploratory well application made by Celtique Energie we can report on the meeting of the WSCC Planning Committee on July 22nd. The report drawn up by the planning officer recommended REFUSAL of the proposed development on three grounds associated with transport unsafe, unsuitable highways and inadequate information concerning turning circles etc - and on concerns about the impacts on the Character of the village. The Councillors voted unanimously against the application thus fully supporting the officers. Three people spoke on behalf of KKWG - Phil Donaghue on transport and associated technical issues; Professor David Smythe on geological implications; and Sue Jameson on the potential impacts on village life, its wonderful location and its rare and much appreciated wildlife. The 5 minutes presentations were accompanied by a timed sequence of local photographs demonstrating what was being said and Photo courtesy of The Independent what could be lost. These speakers were followed, in turn, by Josef Ransley representing Kirdford PC and Andrew Jackson Wisborough Green PC. Finally the local Councillor Janet Duncton from Petworth had unlimited time in which to make a contribution. She did not want to use a lot of time to speak but stressed that while she did not follow all the technical arguments she knew the villages and their residents and supported the officers' recommendation whole-heartedly urging fellow councillors to oppose the plan which could lead to an industrialisation of a beautiful part of Sussex. The unanimous vote to refuse the application was followed by tears of relief as many of those who had worked so hard to communicate the reality of the impacts of the proposal celebrated the outcome. The company, Celtique Energie, now has three months in which to appeal and thus contest the decision made by WSCC. Their second application at Fernhurst in the South Downs National Park is due to be heard on September 11th. Similar issues arise there from the lack of suitable access and the intrusion within a designated area of high landscape value. Watch out for the “Folk Against Fracking event being held in Loxwood Hall from 8late on Saturday October 25th for fun and funds! Best wishes Jill Sutcliffe, KKWG Tel: 01403 700395 31

Recipe of the Month Patty Pan Squashes Recipe to serve four people:Victoria has grown Patty Pan Squashes, and the harvest is very prolific, we are inventing as many different ways to use these delightful little squashes as we can, and this is one is so quick, easy and delicious. 4 – 6 medium Patty Pan squashes cubed to the size of a walnut 2 onions chopped 4 medium tomatoes chopped a good handful of fresh herbs chopped (we use basil, mint, parsley & coriander) 2 tablespoons oil Ricotta cheese or crème fraiche to taste. (courgettes or other types of squash are suitable) Fry the onion in the oil until just opaque, add the cubed squashes and cook covered for approx 10 mins., stirring frequently, when nicely beginning to soften (not mush) add the tomatoes and cook for a further five minutes. Add salt & black pepper to taste, and the herbs, stir and taste. Then add a dollop of Ricotta for each serving, or stir in crème fraiche to make a delicious creamy sauce. Serve with potato, rice or pasta, Yum Yum….. and a green salad. Doris Smallwood
LINK TO HOPE SHOEBOX APPEAL 2014 Please help once again this year, by filling a shoebox in time for Christmas, for the underprivileged of Eastern Europe. Often the only choice they have is whether to buy food or fuel. Gifts are not a priority. Families and elderly folk need our help. Apparently it is possible to fill a shoebox for £10 ! See the poster in church for ideas, or log into www.linktohope.co.uk. There is also a list on the leaflets you need to attach to the boxes, you will find these at the back of the church. Please complete the “Gift Aid” section if you are a taxpayer. Please make sure your shoebox doesn't rattle! Small wrapped sweets are good for filling in the gaps. They recommend a size 8 shoebox, so that they are all of a similar size. Thank you in anticipation, of your continued generosity. Closing date is 5th November. Any queries please phone Suzanne Mosley 01403 700946. 33

Neighbourhood Watch Anti-social behaviour survey This week I have launched a public consultation inviting residents to have their say on how people who commit anti-social behaviour (ASB) are dealt with. A recent poll on my website showed that anti-social behaviour is a big concern for local people, with littering, drug and alcohol misuse, and inconsiderate driving and parking topping the list of issues local people are experiencing most often. Community remedy, which forms part of the Anti-social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act (2014), is designed to introduce simpler and more effective powers for tackling lower level crimes. It is also designed to provide victims, should they want it, a say in how an offender will make amends for the matter if the crime warrants an out of court settlement. From October this year victims of crime will be able to choose from a list of options and police officers will be responsible for ensuring the reparation is administered. This may include compensation for damage caused or repairing the damage themselves, such as removing graffiti. I am seeking your opinions on what these options should be in Sussex, to ensure they reflect the views of our local communities. The consultation will close at midnight on 30 September. A survey can be completed online at http://www.sussex-pcc.gov.uk/ public-consultations/ which gives a list of options to consider as well as space for further suggestions. Printed copies of the survey are being distributed at a number of events around the county and can also be requested from my office by calling 01273 481561 or in writing to: Office of the Sussex Police & Crime Commissioner, Sackville House, Brooks Close, Lewes, East Sussex, BN7 2FZ. Thank you for taking the time to tell me what you think. Best wishes, Katy Bourne, Sussex Police & Crime Commissioner
Immobilise Residents are being urged to join the battle against burglars by logging their valuables on a national website. Immobilise is the world's largest property register and allows police and the public to work together to make stolen items too hot to handle. Residents can enter the details of their possessions on the free website and report when they have been stolen. Police officers not just in Sussex but around the UK can then check the details of items that they find or seize against the database. By confirming that the seized items had been stolen, officers can then look to prosecute whoever they were seized from for burglary or handling stolen goods - and can return the valuables to their rightful owners. Sussex Police are encouraging residents to use Immobilise as part of Operation Magpie, the force's crackdown on burglary across the county. 25 million people use Immobilise and every week hundreds of people are reunited with their lost or stolen property because of the site. Another Telephone Scam! Someone received a call from a firm called “Easy Talk” recently. They pretend that they are taking over the phones from BT so our bills will be halved, they ask you for bank details so that a direct debit can be set up, then another person rings a short time later to finalize the bank details. Luckily, the person googled “Easy Talk” and saw that it was a scam before the second call. The callers are English so quite convincing. Never give anybody your bank details unless absolutely sure they need to know.

Next Market - Thursday 11th September 2014 Village Hall 9 am – 12.30 pm At last we have a fine vegetable and fruit stall at the Market. A colourful and varied display that the thunderstorm rainfall fell on so heavily. Hail just bounced off the awning. What a christening! At last too we have a yummy baking stall with buns, brownies and other goodies. Our Macmillan's Jenny brought some new preserved products including fresh apricot jam and raspberry plus redcurrant jam, as well as that favourite, damson jam. Better Connected West Sussex Broadband contingent came to tell us more about this new development and hand out contact information so that we can find out in more detail. There were two photographers there to mark the occasion. Will it get into the local papers? Our West Sussex County Councillor Janet Duncton came as well to see the Market and how the spread of Better Broadband was being received. Wisborough Green Farmers and Village Market Committee 37

Wisborough Green Horticultural Society September 2014 Break but Saturday 4th October Autumn Plant Sale Monday 6th October Talk by Roger Parsons on “Sweet Peas”. The August Show has been and gone but it has not been lived through as yet, whilst “AD VINCULA” is put together. So thanks and congratulations are to come as well as any interesting memories from the marquee. Twenty-three members of the society visited Fittleworth Gardens last month on a lovely summer afternoon. We were given a private tour by Mark Saunders, the Head Gardener, whose affinity and love for the garden showed in every aspect. It was a really well thought out visit. Mark was Mother at the Tea which was enjoyed around the potting shed. Someone commented on the size of the teapot and suggested perhaps a watering can would have done. He was very taken with the idea. Very special thanks to Alison Midwinter for the scrumptious cakes; the chocolate cake particularly so. Our next event is the Autumn Plant Sale on the little Green at 10.30am on Saturday 4th October. Old Hands know the form – divide and repot, dig up spares, sort out the potting shed/garage and bring to the Sale. New Hands are MOST WELCOME. Come and join the fun. It is a bit of a Bring and Buy Sale. Surprising plants and things turn up. Two days later come and sit down for a Sweet Pea visual extravaganza; listen to a true expert and undoubtedly you will be able to buy some very special seeds. How about a dark maroon Monty Don or a navy blue Lord Nelson or even buy your fill of frilly Spencer Sweet peas? Roger Parsons is a specialist sweet pea grower from Bracklesham Bay. His business stocks about 1200 varieties of Old Fashioned traditional sweet peas to Grandiflora sweet peas. An opportunity to bring an interested friend to pick up tips, seeds or just enjoy the lovely photographs on a big screen. Everyone is welcome, members and visitors. Join us for refreshments afterwards (no charge). . Aija Hamilton 39

Wealden Trefoil Guild On Tuesday August 5th 12 members and 3 visitors, including our Dounhust District Commissioner, Emma Rittmeyer, met at the home of our Chairman,Ruth Isaacs, for a Bring and Share Supper and social get together. Everyone brought along a super variety of food for a buffet supper, which we enjoyed sitting outside on her patio, on a lovely warm evening. After supper Ruth showed the ladies examples of the blankets knitted in squares by members, one crocheted by Linda and a knitted jumper in random coloured wool knitted by June for The Queen Mother’s Clothing Guild as part of the challenge she had set earlier in the year. The Ladies are also collecting suitable items to each fill a shoebox for ‘Link to Hope’, an organisation based in Worthing, which organises the collection of and transport of shoeboxes at Christmas time for families or elderly people in Romania, Moldova, Albania, Bulgaria and Ukraine. Wisborough Greenfingers Tips Find a sheltered, out of the way corner to put woody prunings and old stems for a hedgehog shelter and insect shelter; both excellent garden friends. Time to start planting spring flowering bulbs. A double layer of two types of bulbs in one flower pot at different depths ( the larger bulb at greater depth than the small ones) = a double layer of flowers in the spring. Think about a rat proof compost bin which can take food waste e.g. a Green Joanna. Underground feeding for nearby plants/shrubs trees + fabulous compost to extract for the soil. . 41

CYBER TIPS I started working with computers more than forty years ago and I bought my first home computer, an Atari, in the late 1980’s. I graduated to a PC in 1999 and replaced that with a more up-to-date machine six years later. I still have that computer and it works perfectly well for me. I have been very careful to defend it against all, or at least, nearly all comers; the exception was grandchildren and “probably” as a result, I got a virus that I could not clean myself. I took the machine to a computer shop and they sorted the problem. The other day I received a phone call from a very plausible “voice” who announced himself a computer engineer who had moved into this area and was looking for customers; he had been referred to me, he said. Had he seen these Cyber Tips? I ask myself. He told me that he was offering a free on-line check to establish the health of my computer “If you put the phone down and dial the number I will give you……” You’ve heard this before I’m sure, the old trick to ring a number that will cost you a fortune. Hilary tells me that I should not engage with these calls but I reply that some of the copy for Cyber Tips comes from them! The only reason that these people operate is that they are successful and frequently catch their victims unawares. We have all got to be much more savvy about this than they think we are. Beware the plausible voice! Peter Edmonds
