Organisations join forces to help Mooroopna

AFTER a devastating year burdened by major flooding coupled with the ever-rising cost of living, members of the Mooroopna community were left vulnerable and depleted, with many at-risk individuals not able to get the support they need.

The Greater Shepparton Foundation, Shepparton Foodshare, and Mooroopna Education Activity Centre (MEAC) have joined forces to support the Mooroopna community after the closure of Life Op Shop in late April due to flooding.

Vibrant voices in the community

FROM humble beginnings on an orchard in Ardmona, to the big city of Melbourne, lively local Tom Nethersole is putting in the work as queer artist in the community.

From the Shepparton Lawn Tennis Club to the Shepparton Theatre Arts Group, Tom has delved into a wide range of community organisations. Feeling very grateful to be part of such groups, Tom said, “Shepparton and the different groups I’ve been a part of here have always been very supportive and welcoming and have made me into the person I am today.”

Growing up in a small regional town as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community was not always the easiest. With the help of Shepperton's ever-growing queer community and a long process of self-

acceptance, Tom was able to be more comfortable expressing all sides of his personality.

“Growing up I never saw any queer representation in Shepparton, so it feels incredibly beautiful to see all the events, spaces and groups being formed now and to be a part of them.

“It’s so beautiful to see such a vibrant queer community in a place like Shepparton. It makes me optimistic for the future queer youth and the experiences they’ll have with this supportive community.”

Since finishing up at Goulburn Vallery Grammar School in 2022, Tom has moved to Melbourne to pursue his love of creativity. Working in modelling, acting, music, and photography, Tom follows his

many creative passions and hopes to one day continue such avenues on a larger scale.

“My goal is to have the freedom to enjoy the creative aspects of my life while also being connected to family and friends,” said Tom.

In a message to those out there who grow up in small regional towns and dream of making it big, Tom shared the advice of taking little steps to do what makes you happy.

“Find the confidence to do what you want and create a network around you that supports your dreams.

“With the support of your friends, family, and community- anything is possible.”

Where play is the whole point

No need to book and nothing to pay – just come ready to play! Playgroup is the place for Mooroopna under-5s to have fun and for mums, dads, grandparents and carers to have a cuppa and connect with other parents.

Playgroup facilitator Syeda says the morning sessions offer a place for children and adults alike to make friends. “We make everyone welcome.”

Mooroopna Primary School playgroup runs on Mondays from 9.15am to 10.45am, with another playgroup running from Mooroopna Park Primary on a Friday morning. Both playgroups are part of Council’s supported playgroup initiative.

Mooroopna Primary is also the venue for a Just 4 Bubs playgroup, for babies under 12 months. And for something a little different, the Parent-Child Mother Goose program runs on Thursdays to introduce children to the joy of rhymes, songs and stories.

Families can also tap into the many family support services , including Maternal and Child Health, at the adjoining Mooroopna Children and Families Centre – where older children can be introduced to kindergarten.

The Mooroopna Children and Families Centre was built by the Education Department as part of the Shepparton Education Plan. Run in partnership with Greater Shepparton City Council and the Colman Education Foundation’s “Our Place”, it is the only integrated school and early years setting in the Goulburn Valley.

For details on the Our Place approach, scan the QR code.

For information on playgroup and all centre services, call Community Facilitators Caroline on 0413 842 543 or Sophie on 0435 488 252.

New machine to help fight cervical cancer

VICTORIA is now home to world-leading technology that is making it easier and faster for Victorian women to screen for cervical cancer.

The first of its type in the Southern Hemisphere, the new BD COR Machine means Victoria can now process a much higher volume of self-collected tests for human papillomavirus (HPV) - a common infection that can cause cervical cancer.

Many women report that the traditional method of testing, done by a clinician, can be uncomfortable and can also be difficult to access, especially for women in regional Australia, where it’s often a struggle to even get a GP appointment.

Allowing more women to self-test, in the comfort of their own home will reduce these barriers and ensure women who otherwise would have gone without

a test are more likely to screen for cervical cancer, potentially saving lives.

More than 70 percent of cervical cancers occur in those who have never screened or are overdue and self-collection will play a key role in our efforts toward the elimination of cervical cancer. Cervical cancer screening is recommended every five years for women aged between 25 and 74.

Sophie’s street art success

WALKING through the streets of Shepparton, it’s common to see the cities walls decorated with delightful designs created by talented street artists. One such artist is local woman Sophie Wilson, also known as Sophletta.

While backpacking through Brazil in 2015, Sophie was inspired by the vibrant street art scene and decided to give art a try for the first time. It was there she met fellow street artist- and now husband- Davidson Lopes who invited Sophie to create her very first mural at a local school.

“It was only a small mural, but it was very overwhelming. From there I started painting more and more on the street and met the other street artists from the city, and it’s grown from there,” said Sophie.

Specialising in vibrant murals, Sophie is able to transform a drab and dreary space

into an explosion of colour. Rather than let the town be bombarded with public ads or boring blank buildings, Sophie aims to give the community something beautiful to look at.

“When we walk down the street we see advertising, we see plain walls- whereas art is something that is so powerful and inspiring and brings happiness to people's lives.

“But it can also make us question things and see different perspectives. It’s the voice of the people,” said Sophie.

Speaking to what she loves about street art, Sophie says it’s the connections made with the community that makes it so worthwhile, and having those open dialogues you wouldn’t usually have with strangers is one of the best things about street art.

“There’s something about street art that

opens this portal to the community where people can express themselves. That’s where street art started, that’s what it’s all about”

Ooh La La... delicious Tarte Tatin

WITH its sumptuously dark and sticky caramel, sweet apples and crisp pastry, the heavenly French tarte Tatin, is the result of one of the culinary world’s most glorious and fortuitous mistakes.

An invention of accident, the delectable dessert was created by French hotelier, Stephanie Tatin in the 1880s when, overburdened with work, she set about making an apple pie but forgot the pastry.

Smelling the burning apples in butter, Stephanie tried to rescue the dish by putting the pastry base over the top of the fruit and quickly finished off the cooking by placing the entire pan in the oven.

Et voila! The tarte Tatin, or upside-down apple tart was invented.

With Michelin star credibility, talent and flair, the former head chef of The Euroa Butter Factory’s Chez Clemence, Richard Hayes generously shares his version of the tarte Tatin with The Adviser, and we could not be more pleased.

INGREDIENTS

• 8 pink lady apples

• 100g sugar

• 100g softened butter

RECIPE

1. Preheat oven to 180°C

2. Peel and core apples.

• Sheet of butter puff pastry

• Crème fraiche to serve

3. Leave uncovered apples in fridge overnight, place butter and sugar in a 20cm fry pan or sauté pan.

4. Stand the apples up and fan out clockwise and adding two apple halves to the middle

5. Once the apples are placed in the pan, apply high heat and melt the sugar and butter under the apples into a caramel, using tongs to rotate them regularly to prevent sticking and until

a dark caramel is formed. As the apples cook, they will lose volume and as gaps appear between the fruit, fill them with more apple halves.

6. Once a dark caramel is achieved (its ok if the bottom of the apples burns a little) remove them from the heat and let for 10 minutes.

7. Use a similar size bowl to the pan to cut around of puff pastry, cut some vent holes and use a fork to score the pastry.

8. Apply the pastry to the apples and push down around the sides.

9. Bake at 180°C for 20 minutes

10.Turn oven down to 160°C and bake a further 25 minutes Let pan sit for 30 minutes to cool once baked.

11. Apply to stove shortly to add heat to the pan and shake the pan lightly to move apples, this helps the apples come off the bottom.

12. Place a plate over the pan and flip over. Remove the pan and you have a tarte Tatin.

13.Bon appetite!

Footy legend visits Shepparton

NOW a retiree at the age of 75, Kevin spends his time gardening, writing books, travelling the world, and engaging with members of the community.

Last Friday, the footy legend visited over 50’s resort living facility Lifestyle Communities Shepparton, as part of an ongoing partnership with Klean Air Australia, an airconditioning contractor dedicated to keeping Australians healthy, and reducing energy costs in Aussie households.

The talk was offered to an eager crowd of Lifestyle homeowners, who relished the opportunity to hear the wonderful Mr Sheedy talk about all things football and healthy living.

“This was the best event I’ve been to in a long time,” said resident Brenda Pye. “Inspirational words, full of fun, and just a fabulous experience.”

Sheedy had the crowd in stitches as he ribbed and joked with them all, providing a marvellous morning full of mirth.

“My favourite thing about coming to events like this is the people. They make it great. They’re all different personalities from all the different clubs, but in general they are the entertainment,” said Mr Sheedy.

Speaking to life in retirement, the AFL icon offered this advice to those who are settling down.

“Your health is your wealth. That’s why I like working with Klean Air,” said Mr Sheedy, “I think happiness is a big part of being healthy and I think it’s important that we look for positivity instead of anxiety.

“At our age, we’re living life in the fourth quarter. You better make that last quarter exiting.”

Organisations join forces to help Mooroopna

THE op shop, which was operated by Life Church, aided the community in emergency situations with food parcels, transport, clothing, and general help getting people back on their feet.

As part of the partnership, MEAC- now a registered agency of Shepparton Foodshare- will collect additional food to expand its food relief service during the winter months.

Amanda McCulloch, the Executive Officer of the Greater Shepparton Foundation, spoke of the collaboration with MEAC as an important step in maintaining essential services to those in need.

“A lot of people are finding it really hard at the moment, so this was an opportunity to meet some of the immediate needs of the community,” said Amanda.

Glenn Peric, the Executive Officer of Foodshare, expressed gratitude for the collaboration between MEAC and the Greater Shepparton Foundation to ensure continuous

food support for the Mooroopna community, while imploring those who need assistance to not be hesitant in coming forward.

“The great thing about MEAC is they're putting their hand up to close the gap left by the Life Op Shops closure.

“We understand that it can be quite scary to ask for help, but we want to encourage you to come down to MEAC for support,” said Glenn.

MEAC, being the hub of the Mooroopna community, aims to be responsive to the community's needs as they continue to recover from the impacts of the floods. Jan Phillips, the Manager of MEAC said “It's our core work to look after our community so it just makes sense for us to do this.”

Regional education minister visits Shepparton and Dookie

THE Hon Fiona Nash, Australia's first Regional Education Commissioner, recently visited the University of Melbourne's Dookie and Shepparton campuses to observe the teaching and learning activities taking place, and how they are benefiting rural communities.

During her visit to the Dookie campus, Ms Nash received a briefing on the Bachelor of Agriculture and the Diploma in General Studies (DiGS), while also learning about the important work being done by the Victorian Drought Resilience Adoption and Innovation Hub, and NorVicFoods. The Commissioner had the opportunity to tour the animal handling facilities and the robotic dairy while meeting with students.

“It was great to hear that students are discovering the benefits of a rural lifestyle and developing strong community ties while at Dookie, and how their courses are setting them up for fulfilling careers as future leaders in primary industries,” said Ms Nash.

At the Shepparton campus, the Commissioner spent time touring the Department of Rural Health. Adjacent to Goulburn Valley Health, the department is responsible for delivering the University's Doctor of Medicine Rural Pathway. Ms Nash had the chance to interact with first-year medical students who expressed their enthusiasm about the program.

Rural Health, explained how this unique program, which commenced in partnership with La Trobe University, allows medical students to study and train in regional Victoria, aiming to address the ongoing shortage of doctors in rural areas.

In addition to her role as Regional Education Commissioner, Ms Nash is also a member of the Universities Accord Panel, which is currently conducting a major review of the higher education sector—the first since 2008. The panel is expected to provide an interim report the following month, with a final report scheduled for December.

Food experience report highlights strengths and challenges

THE Committee for Greater Shepparton (C4GS) has recently published a report that captures the experiences of over 60 member businesses, agencies, and nonprofit organizations during the October 2022 floods.

C4GS CEO Lindy Nieuwenhuizen stated that the report was compiled based on the feedback received from nine member roundtables held between February and March 2022. An independent consultant, engaged by C4GS, collected and analysed the information to produce the report.

“At each of the roundtables we asked our members three key questions – what worked, what could have been done better and what would we do differently in the future?” said Lindy.

Detailing the strength of the community response to the floods, Lindy said, “We heard some extremely proud and positive feedback. The incredible spirit, generosity and cooperation demonstrated by our local community, business, and agencies including the SES, police and council; the accuracy of the GBCMA’s flood mapping; the success of council’s planning controls in recent housing developments; the many ways apps and social media connected industry and community; and the leadership demonstrated by individuals and organisations.”

Acknowledging the strengths of the community's response to the October floods the report robustly identified several challenges with four stand outs:

1. The need for a second river crossing critical to the regional workforce and national freight.

2. A call for locals to strengthen district emergency management.

3. A Requirement to build energy resilience vital to emergency response and business continuity.

4. A continuance for accurate flood mapping and planning underpinning smarter and safer housing.

Following the extensive and collated feedback, the Committee will share its report findings as part of the local review and recovery processes.

“The report will also inform our advocacy on behalf of members including our submission to the Victorian Parliamentary inquiry early next month,” said Lindy, adding,

It’s a long journey for many in our community and the support has been vital.”

For more detail and information about the Committee for Greater Shepparton Flood Experience Report copies are available by emailing admin@c4gs.com.au.

Zaidee’s gifts live on

IN December 2004, seven-year-old Shepperton local Zaidee Rose Alexander Turner passed away from a Cerebral Aneurysm. Her father Allan Tuner has actively been Zaidee’s storyteller in her honour for almost 18 years now, founding ‘Zaidees Rainbow Foundation’ the year after her passing.

Zaidee’s Rainbow Foundation aims to inspire discussion and help raise awareness of the immense benefits of organ and tissue donations. Zaidee’s gift saved the lives of seven other people, with two four-year-olds receiving her corneas, a mum who had been on dialysis for six years receiving Zaidee’s kidneys, an eight-year-old receiving her liver, two newborn babies receiving two heart valves and a baby receiving a patch of Zaidee’s heart.

An incredibly hard discussion to have when

thinking about the death of ourselves and our loved ones, Allan wishes for everyone to have a think about their decision to be organ and tissue donor, and let their choice be known.

Shepparton Club will be collaborating with local charities for the next 12 months, an effort which gives back and spreads awareness of the amazing foundations in our community that support local people. STOLEN

In Parliament

May was a busy month at Parliament including the handing down of the State Budget. The horror budget, which sees this government scrambling to find ways to address the state’s out of control debt, saw regional Victoria left behind. A debt that is costing $10 million per day in interest and a debt that will continue to rise.

Regional Development has been halved from $211.5m to $106.6m. Since 2002 it has been slashed by 80%. Agriculture funding is down 34% on last year from $687.3m to $454.8m, directly impacting on regional hubs. There was not enough funding for the repair and maintenance of the crumbling depilated and unsafe roads, with funding cut by 45% since 2020 and from $702.2M, to just $441.6M in the last year alone.

Shepparton BypassA Priority Project

The former coalition government committed $208 million towards the Shepparton Bypass in the 2018/2019 budget. The project is an 80% contribution from the Federal Government and 20% contribution from the State Government. The State Government allocated 10.2 million in the 2017/2018 budget for an early works package and finalisation of the business case and must give certainty to their commitment. The project is under a 90-day infrastructure review with the Federal Government, and it is a critical time for both the Federal and State Governments to acknowledge the vital need for this project to continue.

Lovell pushes for dedicated school bus between Kyabram and Tatura

LIBERAL Member for Northern Victoria, Wendy Lovell MP, has called on the Andrews Labor Government to introduce a school bus program for students of Kyabram's St Augustine's College who live in Tatura.

Lovell made this request during the adjournment debate in the State Parliament and directed it towards the Minister for Education, Natalie Hutchins.

Lovell's request was prompted by a passionate letter from a year 8 student at St Augustine's College in Tatura, describing the challenges faced by students who use the V/Line public bus system to commute to and from school each day.

Currently, there are 45 students from Tatura attending the college, and this number is expected to increase by approximately 20 new students in 2024.

Lovell expressed concern over the lack of a dedicated school bus for Tatura students attending St Augustine's College. She highlighted safety concerns associated with students using the public bus network and called on Minister Hutchins to provide

a dedicated school bus service for these students.

Additionally, in response to recent incidents of violence at school bus interchanges in Greater Shepparton, Lovell also urged the deployment of Protective Services Officers at school bus stops to ensure the safety of all students.

“With 45 St Augustine’s College students currently living in Tatura, it is concerning they are forced to use the V/Line public bus network to travel to and from Kyabram for school each day,” said Ms Lovell before adding, “With the number of students from the school living in Tatura expected to rise next year, it is time the Minister established a dedicated school bus service for these students.”

VICSES provides the largest road rescue network in Australia, with 104 accredited Road Crash Rescue (RCR) provider units (Principal Providers)

On June 9 (King’s Birthday weekend), Murchison SES will be at the Calder/ Woodburn Truck Stop from 1pm-7pm, so if you’re driving through, make sure you stop and have a good break to ensure you have a safe driving journey.

MAIN: IT’S ALL ABOUT THE HISTORY...For GV Motor Vehicle Drivers Club secretary, Barry Croke its is the story embedded within the Humber Super Snipe that holds fascination. The proud owner of five Humbers, Barry is standing alongside his resplendent 1967 model, with his 1968 Super Snipe, marked with a Chrysler stamp, parked behind.

LEFT: A REAL HUMMER...Pouring fuel through two enormous carburettors, the powerful 1968 Humber Super Snipe is a 137 horsepower machine with an automatic transmission and a high compression engine, a true testament to the English design and ingenuity of its day.

A

DESIGNED for distinction, the Humber Super Snipe was one of the most significant British cars from the 1930s to the late 1960s.

Marketed (through its various iterations) to upper-middleclass managers, professional people and government officials, the Humber was driven by the likes of Marshall Montgomery, British Labour Prime Minister Harold Wilson and was, throughout the 1960s, the ministerial fleet car of choice in Canberra.

Owning five Humber Super Snipes, Goulburn Valley Motor Vehicle Drivers Club (GVMVDC) secretary, Barry Croke said, “I’ve always thought the Humber was an exceptional car, and if you were looking to buy a top-end car in the 1960s, you might have bought a Ford Fairlane, a Pontiac or perhaps a Studebaker, but it was the Humber than had all the extra features in them. Driving one of these in the sixties would have been comparable to driving a BMW or an Audi today.”

Clearly appreciating the engineering prowess and meticulous attention to detail that are exemplified in his own 1967 and 1968 registered Humbers, Barry explained that it is the history embodied within the vehicles that is of the greatest interest to him.

Beginning as a bicycle manufacturer in the 1800s, Englishman Thomas Humber transformed his success into becoming one of the

nation’s first car builders in the 1880s.

Bolstered beyond all imagining by the insatiable demand for vehicles during the first World War, the Humber enterprise was purchased by brothers William and Reginald Rootes in 1928 before diversifying into jeeps, trucks and even aircraft bombers during WW2.

Following the war and with the enormous push for the beleaguered and war-torn nation to generate export dollars, the Rootes Group not only exported Humbers to Australia but had them shipped to a plant in Port Melbourne where they were pieced together from completely knocked down (CKD) boxes.

With the Rootes Group eventually being bought out by American automotive giant, Chrysler in the late 1960s, production ceased on the Humber in the last 1960s as more cost-effective and modern designs thrived in the market.

A flagship to English ingenuity, class, and to a bygone era when foldable backseat picnic tables, leather bench seats and ashtrays at every turn registered a more sedate and ever-present appreciation of life, Barry’s esteem for the Humber Super Snipe is agreeably understood.

GVMVDC is always on the look out for new members with contact details and information available at www.gvmvdc.com.au

Football previews R9

SHEPPARTON V BENALLA

This will be an interesting match-up for a variety of the reasons.Shepparton is just going despite having higher expectations for the season and the two wins would no doubt not be meeting the expectations of the football department.Benalla has won two games also in what is proving a challenging year for the Rose City team.Jarrad Waite starred in the win last week, kicking 8 goals from his 17 possessions to help them sneak across the line against Rochester.President Geoff Hill did say in the ONE FM broadcast game against Mooroopna that Waite wouldn’t play every week. He had 11 score involvements against the Tigers, so the Saints could afford to be without him. Jordan Wolff, Tom O’Brien, David Mennen, Colby Mathieson and Chris Welsh will be important players for the visitors. They will also be hoping to recall ruckman Josh Marchbank and potentially Nick Mellington which would be some big ins for the young Saints.Lewis McShane is in good recent form for the Bears, having kicked a couple of bags in the past three weeks.Ruckman, Bryce Stephenson would be leading the club best and fairest award and the home team would be hoping he continue that form.Co-coach Xavier Stevenson, Adam DeCicco and premiership forward Anthony Andronaco will be important if the Bears are to kick a winning score. Tip: Shepparton

KYABRAM V SHEPPARTON SWANS

The Shepparton Swans face a massive challenge to try and go the distance with one of the league’s premiership fancies.Kyabram is setting itself up for a top two or three finish after claiming some big scalps already in 2023, losing only to Echuca.Thomas Holman, Will Golds, Lachlan Smith, Zachary Norris, Toby Wooller and Kane Herbert will be looking to continue their good form and put the young Swans to the sword. The Swans did win the second half in last week’s loss to Tatura, including kick five goals in the last quarter.Coach Jedd Wright knows this is a slow build.Nathan Hrovat, Isaiah Jones, Tom Preece, Andrew Riordan and James Auld will be important if the Swans are to be competitive against the home team. Tip: Kyabram.

MANSFIELD V SHEPPARTON UNITED

Mansfield gets an opportunity to return to the winners’ den when it welcomes Shepparton United to the High Country. The Demons have not won since the opening day of the season when it accounted for Shepparton on Good Friday.Mitchell Roche, Harry Smith, Liam Serra, Marcus Wattie, Fergus Pinnuck and Jayden Magro will be doing their best to try and lift the Demons to victory against an Eagles outfit who has proven that it feasts on those teams outside the top six so far in 2023.Dirk Koenen, Tom Dunstan, Daniel Leggett, Frazer Dale, Sam Lynch and Brett Mahoney will be important to ensure the Eagles keep the chasing pack outside the top six at bay. Tip: Mansfield.

ROCHESTER V EUROA

Euroa will be looking to bounce back to the winners’ circle when it heads to Moon Oval. The Magpies were brilliant and lost no friends in going toe-for-toe with the reigning premier in the grand final replay last weekend and just falling short. There was a lot to like about what they did and had it not been for some errors that lead to goals for Echuca, then the Pies could have got the win. That aside, they now move to

curbing the Tigers who will look to Joseph Atley, Mitch Cricelli, Sean Williams, Bailey Wileman, Nathan McCarty and James McPhee to try and lead them to an upset win.Euroa will look to Ryan Pendlebury who played one of his best games since joining Euroa, forward, Tristan Davies, Andrew Bell, Jacob Gleeson and Will Hayes (31 possessions) and ruckman Andrew Smith to lead them to its sixth win of 2023. Tip: Euroa.

TATURA V SEYMOUR

Tatura faces a massive challenge if it is to keep its finals aspirations alive when it takes on the in-form Seymour Lions.Ben Rigoni and Jack O’Sullivan were the stars in the Lions’ statement win last weekend when they beat Shepparton by 15 goals. Their dominance through the midfield allowed the forwards of Nathan Beattie, Thomas Davey, Nathan Fowler and Lachlan Waite to be on the end of the endless supply into the forward 50 after quarter time which saw the Lions kick 19 goals. If the midfield isn’t stopped then the Bulldogs could be in for a tough day at the kennel.Chris Ryan, Brodie Meyers, Matt Rennie, Michael Archer and Ethan Penrith will be important if the Dogs are to be competitive and match the Lions. Tip: Seymour.

ECHUCA V MOOROOPNA

What a match-up this shapes up to be? Echuca only lost one game officially in 2022 and we know who that was against – Mooroopna in round 18.That was the win which famously qualified the Cats for the finals. The Cats have tuned up for this challenge with two good wins over Benalla and Mansfield. Coach John Lamont would have no doubt done his homework on how to best bring down the Murray Bombers. He will turn to Liam Betson, Rory Huggard, Ethan Hunt, Jack Hunt, Jackson Trengove and Chris Nield to lead the way to put some early scoreboard pressure on the home team. If the Cats can hit the scoreboard early, then it will force the likes of Cameron Valentine, Mitchell Kemp, Corbin Anderson, Sam Willoughby and Cooper Barber to wrestle that momentum away from the visitors. Two others who will be important for the Murray Bombers will be Jack McHale who had 26 disposals in the win over Euroa to continue his strong return to the line-up after missing last year’s flag and co-coach Sam Reid had 12 clearances last weekend, so he will need some close attention from the Cats. I like what the Cats are doing, but until they are beaten, I am not prepared to tip against the reigning premier. Tip: Echuca.

Goulburn Valley League netball round 9 previews

SHEPPARTON V BENALLA

Shepparton faces an important game to try and get back on the winners’ list and put some breathing space between itself in sixth place and the chasing pack.

The Bears were competitive against the reigning premier Seymour last Saturday.

Coach Tracey Brereton will be working with her girls to put together four consistent quarters and to do that she will turn to shooters Jane Cook and Madeline Gray to lead the way along with experienced defender Ash Cann and youngster Eliza Bicknell to continue her strong start to her A-grade career.

Benalla will turn to shooter Natalie Pritchard, Megan Morrison and Olivia Dalton to try and revive their season after only one win in 2023. Tip: Shepparton.

KYABRAM V SHEPPARTON SWANS

The Shepparton Swans face a must win when it makes the short trip across to Kyabram.

A loss and coach Courtney Simpson will have a big challenge on her hands in the second half of the season to attempt to revive their top six hopes. The Swans will take solace from the fact that they pushed Tatura all the way before going down by six goals.

Kyabram will look to Hollie Reid, Elivia Hall and shooter Alyssa Trebilcock to try and lead them to their first win of 2023. Tip: Kyabram.

MANSFIELD V SHEPPARTON UNITED

Mansfield went within five goals of pulling off what would have been the upset of 2023

against Mooroopna last weekend.

Coach Nelle Cousins would have been thrilled by what her team dished up against the undefeated Cats.

She will look to her goal attack, Isobel Anderson and mid-courter Darcy CroxfordDemasi to try and lead the Eagles to their first win since 2021.

The Demons were able to celebrate a good win over Kyabram and at the same time celebrate the milestone of Diaz Barzen. Barzen saddled up for her 50th club game last weekend.

Laura Cole, Olivia Kirby and Georgie Walpole will be important if the Demons want to keep within striking distance of the top six.

The trio have been leading from the front as the Demons like to stay in touch with the top six teams. Tip: Shepparton United.

ROCHESTER V EUROA

Euroa is the form team of the competition along with Mooroopna.

The Pies welcomed Annabelle Gorman to the team last weekend and she made an immediate impact in her first game for the club with 37 goals. She was well supported in goals by Mia Sudormirski and Kellie Davidson through the mid-court.

That led to a 19-goal win over Echuca to back-up its strong performance in inflicting Tatura’s first loss in round 7 and at the same time enhance its premiership aspirations.

Rochester currently sits outside the top six by 2 points and this will be a massive test of its improvement against Euroa. If they are to clip the wings of the Magpies, then they are going to need to make every post a winner.

Tip: Euroa.

TATURA V SEYMOUR

This promises to be a fantastic game of netball and it will show where these two teams sit at the half-way mark of the season. Both are sitting at 7-1 and a win would give them bragging rights coupled with a spot in the top two on the ladder.

The reigning premier has the form of the

board while Tatura is looking to be a genuine contender in 2023.

Courtney Aldous was pivotal in the defence end in the 14-goal win over the Bears while Casey Adamson will be hoping to continue her strong form from last weekend.

Rosie O’Sullivan and Ellie Fuhrmeister will be others looking to continue their good form for the Lions.

The Bulldogs will look to mid-courters Taylor Rokhar and Elise Boyer while shooters Julia Clarke and Jasmine Fraser will need to make every opportunity count to put the Lions under scoreboard pressure. Tip: Seymour.

ECHUCA V MOOROOPNA

This is a big test for both teams.

Echuca is clinging onto its place in the top six and a loss could see them dumped out if other results don’t go according to plan for them.

The Murray Bombers were beaten by redhot Euroa last weekend while the Cats had to claw their way back from a small deficit against Mansfield to eventually finish five goals clear and remain undefeated.

Cats coach Di Hanslow will be hoping to have Shelby Britten and Ella Ogier available for the trip to Echuca while the height of Caitlin McLachlan and Taylah Lloyd in defence will be important as they try to keep Echuca shooters Belinda Lees and Sheridan Townrow at bay.If the Cats’ shooters can get on top of the experienced Echuca defensive third, then I think they can remain undefeated. Tip: Mooroopna.

Skating the endless possibilities for strong mental health

IN an ever complex and challenging world, it has never been more important for individuals to sustain the crucial link between mental health and physical fitness, particularly for young people.

Local skateboarder and coach, Josh Harvie, understands this critical link only too well. Having tackled significant mental health issues in the past, skateboarding has been his panacea.

Having spent the last six years honing his skills, Josh is offering his talent as a coach to skaters of all ages who want to reap the benefits of this ever popular and evolving sport.

Coaching for the YMCA and Gnarly Neighbours in Seymour, Josh now sees great potential for his own coaching brand, Ramp Rascals amongst Shepparton’s vibrant skating culture.

“Kids will be able to get one-on-one lessons, and as a coach I’ll be guiding them from getting on a board, feeling comfortable riding and most importantly, having fun.

“There’s a lot of different benefits to skateboarding and I feel skaters will be affected uniquely. Not one person has the same experience with skateboarding. But for kids, its confidence, persistence, foot-eye-

co-ordination and maintaining focus that is key.”

With the experience to take older skaters into competition if they wish, Josh said, “With older individuals I can help them achieve exactly what they’re after and one

of the things I found helped me a lot in the past, was being able to open my mind to completely different tricks. I’ve learned so many things from someone saying, ‘What if you tried it this way or that way? So, for older kids, the possibilities are

endless, just like skateboarding, I believe,” Josh said.

If you would like to book a one-on-one lesson with Ramp Rascals or to find out more, contact Josh @ramp_rascals on Instagram.
