deep online at: www.deep-london.co.uk • www.issuu.com • facebook • www.myspace.com/wiredmag • @bonsai_editor Hello there.. ...and welcome to issue 77 and our fabulous beer garden special (part one of two, or maybe three, depending on how the weather goes over the next couple of months). Actually, when we started it, it was lovely and sunny. Now it is not. Sorry about that, hopefully it’ll brighten up. Elsewhere this month we’ve not been up to much - it takes time to visit every beer-garden in Croydon you know, so this issue is more compact and bijou than most, but we like it like that. It’s slightly cheaper to produce, for one thing. We have been away though this month, a weekend away in Stratford Upon Avon, which was lovely. And sunny. So there. Apart from that we’ve not been about, so there’s not much to say here. I shall have to use the cat in the hat again. Anyway, better go, our intrepid squirrel has made the leap from window to window-mounted bird feeder and is now sat inside it chucking nuts and seeds about. I want to see how it gets down again, and also film it on my new Flip video camera so I can send it in to You’ve Been Framed and bag myself £250. Ker-ching! That’s it then, nothing else to say - I think the sun is trying to break through - hurrah, we shall go to the beer garden! I may send this off to print and go for a nice game of golf. Or a pint. Or probably both. Right, as I am clearly overtired and now merely rambling to fill space, I’ll say goodbye. Here’s the cat again. Until next month, and news of our 7th Birthday Party, possibly, pip pip, avanti and allons-y! Angela x

BEER GARDENS IN THE TRUEST SENSE OF THE WORD. LOOK - greenery - lovely! a sea of grass, family friendliness (that’s the editor’s nephew & family by the way) a well stocked bar mere footsteps away with ice cold beer and a very decent restaurant (and a hotel next door in case it all gets too much) . delightful, and what could be finer on A gloriously sunny sunday. well, a few things but you know what i mean. top day, top garden, happy birthday moo-ma! coombe lodge,

as described within these pages: “The beer garden is like a sort of shrine to Apollo and Dionysus simultaneously - Apollo representing order – the fenced off green bits – and Dionysus relating to the sensual and spontaneous aspects of human character. That’ll be the rest of the garden & pub” all very poetic, and true, but what it boils down to is this - i can’t recall ever

having had a bad night in the oval beer garden. i’ve had a few i can’t recall at all, but... an extension of the character of the pub moved outside - friendly, a bit idiosyncratic and a lot of fun, this is probably our favourite garden, and now they’ve just had a swanky new BBq built i imagine even more time will be spent carousing, spilling half the drinks down the stairs on the way to the garden and being periodically blinded by the wall-light, brilliant place!

Septuagenarian agony aunt cum rock mutton Auntie May gets some spring rock. . .

It’s a funny old month, April,” I said to Edith over our morning pint of Baileys. “One minute it’s colder than a snowman’s bollocks and then we’re sweltering in Mediterranean temperatures, watching the daffs wilting in the heat.” It’s been one long holiday for Edith and me this month. I say long, but actually it’s gone really quickly, probably because we’re so old (yes, time does speed up as you get

a spot of live music at Scream Lounge. We did make a necessary detour to the Red Deer (yes we were desperate) to see most of Chamelion but had to leave after a while when we discovered we were the only females in the pub who weren’t pregnant. The next weekend we indulged our secret vice and pottered up to the bookies to have a little flutter on the Grand National. Rather than

Edith’s Grand National betting system of ‘that jockey matches my toilet paper’ proved uncannily accurate. . . older) and because we’ve been having fun (time files…..etc). We started the month with Easter (along with everyone else) and, after munching our way through an indecent amount of chocolate, we split our time between drinking in the Ship and the Green Dragon and

just putting a couple of quid each way on the favourite, we experimented wildly with trying to work out the best way to ascertain a winner. I quite liked the “bet on the horse with the name which reminds you of your favourite pudding” method and Edith finally

settled for the “that jockey matches my toilet wallpaper” method which proved uncannily accurate and she came out £14.76 the richer. Overjoyed with her success she went on to blow the lot on a poorly made decorating decision but was amused to find on leaving that the manager had slipped a “GamAnon” leaflet into her handbag. I’m glad to see that Scream Lounge have followed my advice to put on some more tribute bands. Iron On Maiden were fantastic and the event was attended by a large contingent of the Iron Maiden fan club who seemed to be jockeying for the coveted “rarest t-shirt” accolade. I never cease to be amazed at tribute bands who not only sound like the bands they represent, but look like them too (although in this instance ‘Bruce Dickinson’ was a tad on the short

side). Don’t miss their Nirvana tribute night on Friday 28th May with Nervana supported by the Hangovers making their longawaited return to the stage. Just for a change I thought I’d venture a bit further afield for a day out, and I forayed up to London to meet the fabulous Miss B who had

picnic doileys to toddler-sized saucepans but does not have a pub which serves food. We eventually came across a café which had nothing but egg sandwiches on white bread and one type of coffee (instant), although this did save us the dilemma of which type of coffee we wanted and whether it should

It is to Croydon’s eternal shame and my considerable annoyance that we don’t have a venue the likes of the O2 Islington. . . popped over from Australia. We met outside The Famous Cock (famous for what?) and had intended to have a cultural day at the William Morris exhibition but we got hopelessly lost (Walthamstow does not believe in road names and Miss B’s trusty compass, purchased in Oz, got confused by its proximity to the North Pole) and we ended up in Walthamstow Market where you can buy anything from belly dancing costumes to cows’ feet and

be skinny or not. We spent the evening at the O2 Islington Academy where the amazingly brilliant Voodoo Six were supporting the slightly disappointing Union (rather too Bryan Adams for my taste). Unfortunately my view was obstructed for the most part by a tall man with extraordinarily wide hair – when I am Queen I shall pass a law compelling such varmints to tie their frizz back or use some sort of hairnet. The O2 Islington Academy is a wonderful venue,

24

smaller than Brixton but much larger than a pub, and it is to Croydon’s eternal shame and my considerable annoyance that we don’t having anything similar here. Islington actually has two good venues as the Relentless Garage is just up the road so you’d think somewhere the size of Croydon could manage one. Sorry, rant over, back to reality and Croydon. To the Stag & Hounds actually, to see Brightwhite and to marvel at Anthea’s ability to sound exactly like Alanis Morissette. Edith danced about so wildly she got entangled in the St. George’s Day bunting draped around the bar which got caught on one of her protruberances – she says it was her brooch……. Well, that’s all for this month. I’ll be back next month, providing I survive the Ship’s Doctors & Nurses Fancy Dress Night on 15th May.

S

ad news to start with this month. As I’m sure most of you are aware, the wonderful STUFF shopping emporium in Middle Street has closed. It’s a bloody shame, given the hard work and enthusiasm shown by and eminating from everyone involved. I won’t go into the why’s and wherefores, but I will say this, that, having spoken to David, he’s thrown down the gauntlet and asked us to tell you that there’s a ready-made, fabulous undercover market in Croydon waiting for someone to come in and re-open it. More on that next month, but we all know it’s a bloody goldmine waiting to happen, and would have become one imminenetly, had it had the chance to do so. We’ll miss it hugely. Sodding banks. Oh, did I say that out loud? Good. Better news now and our huge congratulations go to The Cricketers in Shirley who have just been awarded Croydon Pub Of The Year by the Croydon and Sutton Campaign For Real Ale fellas. Excellent work. We have it on good information, for you ale-drinkers, that Ray the Landlord currently has Pictish Black Diamond, Southport Golden Sands, Rudgate Ruby Mild, Dark Star APA, Black Hole Red Dwarf, O'Hanlons Port Stout and Harveys

Sussex on (correct at time of going to print, so don’t blame us - or them - if they’ve run out!). Ray also serves a legendary curry and the pub has log fires, a nature reserve and a wideranging ale-ordering policy. So there. Well done to The Cricketers (47 Shirley Rd, Addiscombe). Elsewhere, more Boot Led Zeppelin news, following the completion of their epic live DVD this month. Word reaches us on the grapevine that the chaps are returning to The Fairfield Halls on 17th June, which is great news. We went to the last gig there and it was fantastic. More on that next month too. More exciting news regarding this year’s Croydon Summer Festival now - having spoken with main organisers Jenny and Davina it transpires that negotiations are underway to get The Damned to headline this year, as a sort of homecoming

Anyway, hopefully I haven’t got anyone into trouble - that is the end of the news, please return to what you were doing. Got news? E-mail: angela@deep-london.co.uk. Ta!

A blatantly ripped off game for eagle-eyed readers...

I

t’s back, our homage to two of our favourite telly programmes, The Hoobs and Harry Hill’s TV Burp and our very own version of ‘where has the knitted character been this week’. Except without a knitted character, and without it being on telly, and with substantially shabbier prizes, and monthly. In case you weren’t around last issue, here’s a brief precis of it all: 1) Every month we’ll deposit the Editor’s very own prized Groove Hoob fluffy toy somewhere in one of our stockists’ premises in sunny Croydon or the surrounding bits where Deep gets distributed. We’ll give you a tiny clue as to his

whereabouts. 2) You spot Groove. 3) E-mail where you saw our furry friend to hello@deep-london.co.uk with the subject line ‘Groove’, or text Groove and where you saw him to 07910 506197. (Texts charged at standard Virgin message rate) 4) Win a prize of either a) something crap and fluffy which we’ve won in the groping grabber machine / coconut shy on Brighton Pier, or b) something else we’ve found lying around the office, or even c) something quite good. 5) Get your picture in the magazine and gain an immense amount of kudos.

Remember, we don’t expect you to go trawling all over South London looking for a green Hoob but if in the course of your travels this month you happen to spot a green Hoob then really, what could be easier than to let us know and you may win a lovely prize (and get your picture in the mag and get kudos etc etc). This month’s clue: Groove is waiting for the sun to come out on one of our best beer gardens in its accompanying PUB. Closing date for this month’s competition is 25th May 2010. Good luck and happy Hoobspotting...

T

here’s Groove, look, (after a brief scare when he was put in the lost and found) relaxing on top of the fridge because he’s so cool behind the downstairs bar in the Scream Lounge. The clue, if you recall, was that Groove was listening to some music in a bar, and Scream is Croydon’t finest live music bar, so it was obvious really. We had quite a few 27

entries this month, so thanks to everyone who bothered, and congratulations to this month’s winner, Donna Gallagher, who was very quick off the mark and wins some bespoke aromatherapy bath products courtesy of MarieClaire Aromatherapy. Well done to everyone who spotted him - Good luck this month!

What’s This? http://doiop.com/name Wherever you see a website address in our listings that has the prefix http://doiop.com (or has ‘bit.ly’ or ‘tinyurl’ in it) it means we’ve used an URL shortener to make it easier for you to visit sites (especially facebook event pages whose URLs are ridiculously long). The address given will still take you to the original site, be it facebook or wherever, it just makes it easier for you if you’re reading the mag and wish to type addresses into your browser to get more info etc. We know most of you know this, but some people have asked, so there you go.
