deep online at: www.deep-london.co.uk • www.issuu.com • www.facebook.com/deeplondon • twitter @deep_london Hello there... ...welcome to issue 93, and a rather subdued editorial, because I have a stinking cold, and have had for about the last three weeks. To be honest it’s getting on my wick now, but there you go, I gather there’s a lot of it about. I just hope I’m feeling better by the 9th of October, when the Deep Massive will be down the Royal Standard defending our appaling record at their annual conker competition. In my experience, it’s tricky to swing a conker with the sniffles. And yes, I am getting my excuses in early... In other news, we’re happy to introduce two new members of said Deep Massive this month who are, shockingly, contributing under their own names in the form of Thomas and Evelina, who’ve written and designed (in that order) our new film review section - wave hello, readers! As for this month’s issue, we normally try to put out some sort of Halloween special, but I think we’ve probably pretty much covered that in recent years, with ghosts and haunted pubs, plague pits, the infamous Cane Hill urban explorer article and various other bits and pieces, so we’ve gone a bit left-field this year with an article on Ghost Signs. It’s got the world ghost in it, and that’s good enough for us. In fact, apart from the word ghost and our film special, Halloween seems to have passed us by a bit this year. We shall make up for it with some vigorous trick or treating and the visiting of as many parties as is humanly possible on the day itself. Elsewhere, there’s no month in pictures this month as there’s just too much bloody stuff going on so we’ve had to extend our listings pages. When I think back to issue one, when there was a total of about 8 events in the whole mag, it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy that there’s just so much more to do these days. I’d be substantially warmer and fuzzier if I charged to put listings in - in fact I’d probably be able to afford the Ferrari below, but it’s all done with kindness for you, our lovely readers. If some more of you could pay us back by entering our photography competition that’d be lovely. There is a prize, you know! Finally, we were going to do a review of the Croydon All Stars Charity Gig which happened last month in aid of the riot victims, but we’re hanging on for that until November when the last bit that we wanted to put in will have been done, but while we’re here we would like to thank all the bands, helpers, raffle donators and especially you lot who came along. We’ll let you know the final total next month, but it was pretty impressive, so cheers! Right, that’s it from me, I’m off for a Lemsip and / or a large brandy. Have a wonderfully balmy October, a spooktacular Halloween and a safe Guy Fawkes night, and we’ll see you next month. Avanti, allons-y, cheers! Angela xxx Your Bonsai Editor with what she’d quite like for Christmas, so get saving - cheers! x 1

Petal Dunwoody investigates the phenomena of ‘Ghost Signs’. . .

W

e’ve covered Halloween in these hallowed pages many times before but of course we like to keep you, our noble readers excited, interested and inspired. You may want ghosties, ghoulies (but of course) and long legged beasties and we give you – Ghost signs (tenuous has been temporarily removed from the Deep lexicon). Ghost signs (also fading ads or brickads) are hand painted adverts on the sides of buildings, popular from the Victorian period – the first flush of mass marketing – up to the 1960’s when they were largely superceded by hoardings with paper signs and then TV and print. The Ghost Signs Project (www.ghostsigns.co.uk) has an archive of 600 or so pictures from around

there are about five on view as you cross over Clapham High Street. Ok, I am aware that their purpose was the same as the intrusive, ubiquitous signs taking 90% of our personal space, but the local nature of them and the skills of the artisan is something of value beyond the commercial interest, for example, time waiting on platform 6 at East Croydon passed more interestingly looking at the old Fyffe’s bananas sign opposite. The History of Advertising Trust (HAT) (www.hatads.org.uk/gallery/main.php?g 2_itemId=33) has pictures of nine extant ghost signs in and around Croydon, the most famous of which is the sign on the Surrey Street side of Millets (coincidently near where we found our first Geocache), where the yellow, red and

"Train travel is a bit like a walk through Curry’s these days, but why not have a look out of the window and you’ll see; 1) The real world and, 2) Some nifty signs that were part of our collective visual experience. . ." England and few in Scotland. The art of signwriting has been around a long time – Egyptians did it, people in Pompeii did it (erotically) long before it was used for advertising. Some examples of ghost signs are on the premises of the shop or company being advertised, but more frequently they’re plonked on the end house of street of brick terraces. You know that we try to exhort you all to look up and around you and here is another opportunity to check out and engage with your surroundings. Worthwhile for any reason but in this case rewarded with a view of functional art and design on a grand scale. Train travel is a bit like a walk through a branch of Currys these days - watching Glee in HD at 7.30am is lovely no doubt, but have a look out of the window and you will see; 1) The real world and, 2) Some nifty sings that were part of our collective visual experience Clapham

blue must have been impressively vivid when it was new. Another famous Croydon trader, Reeves, has got one still visible down Tanfield Road and there is a particularly good one in Cherry Orchard Road, on the masonry dividing the roof of two shops you will see ‘Jackson’s Boot repairs’. There is also quite a rarity in Derby road - the ‘Flicker video tape’ ghost sign comes from the 70s or 80s when painting directly on walls was out of fashion. As noted the HAT has 9 examples in Croydon, but we know there are more than that around - there is at least one more on Surrey Street alone, so why not pass a bit of time and have a look around, maybe take some pictures of a sign or two? Send them off to the Ghost signs project - and to us if you would like to join the picture of the month next month. Milletts, Surrey St.

Which, as any Germanophile will tell you, means Beer! Here! Now! Well, that’s what we were told it means. . . Willkommen to German Beer Tasting at the Half & Half!

L

ong term Deep (née Wired) readers may recall some time ago we took six of the various reprobates who made up the Deep (née Wired) Massive down to The Beer Circus where we embarked on a ‘Beer Olympics’ - tasting many (too many) of the exotic and mainly highly potent alcoholic beverages they had to offer. It ended... fuzzily, but happily. Skip forward a few years and The Beer Circus is no more, having been replaced by The Half and Half, an establishment initially looked upon with suspicion by the Circus regulars but one which has proved iteslf to be

to get home in one piece. About 6 groups of friends - 20 or so individuals - are turned out, more or less filling up the comfy sofas downstairs at the Half and Half. Bowls of pretzels and mini frankfurters sit as yet untouched on every table and diffident yet cordial chat fills the air. Phil is our cheery (beery??) MC who we find out knows a lot about beer and is a genuine enthusiast, as he should be - Phil works for Cave Direct (www.cavedirectresources.com) who have been importing and distributing craft and artisan beers

"Beer number seven is uncharted territory - smoked beer!! Smoked barley with beech wood chip, in fact. Reminiscent of bacon and ashtray. Despite this we are not fans. . ." equally as avant-garde and adventurous in its selection of exotic and potent beers, so when we got the invite to attend their latest tasting session, this one entirely devoted to German beers, how could we possibly decline? Actually, there were a few moments when we thought of declining, as both of this event’s intrepid reprobates, your humble Editor and Petal Dunwoody, were laid low with the lurgie, but we are ever the professionals, and thusly decided to soldier on for the cause of booze. Yes, we are troopers. And so it was that we found ourselves on the 22nd September in the cosy downstairs area of the Half and Half, with tasting notes and pens in hand, at which point I’ll pass you over to Petal to complete the story, mainly because after beer three his notes were utterly incomprehensible to anyone but himself... “The task in hand is clear: to sample, learn about and otherwise appreciate 10 German beers of various styles and strengths and then

since 1979, and he’s spent much time in Germany, so he knows his stuff. This was also his third such event of the day which shows admirable constitution, although the Editor looks most discombobulated when he goes around the room asking people to introduce themselves to the group - I believe her exact words were ‘This is why I left the bloody Home Office, so

Blurry? Of course it’s blurry, we were DRUNK! 6

I wouldn’t have to do this sort of thing any more...’. But, initial discomfort over, Phil goes on to give us throughout the night some interesting social and scientific context to what we’re drinking, none of which I knew before, particularly that German beer is being taken over, in Germany, by the consumption of alcopops. Half and Half owner Ian and manager Daryl, who are pouring the beers, prove very able 'glamorous assistants'... My memory of the event was of a very good night becoming progressively hazy so I took some notes. Sadly, these too become progressively hazy but hopefully I’ve remembered enough that you’ll be encouraged to try similar events, which they run at the Half and Half regularly. But down to the business of the day, our (admittedly uneducated, palatte-wise) comments and those all important Deep London massive scores on the doors, with a free German numeral lesson thrown in... Eins) Jever Pils - 5% A classic North German beer, nutty, quite bitter. I thought a lighter version of Holsten Pils, bit of a palette refresher, could have drunk a few more (and I would have, except at

this stage I was saying 'pace self, pace self' under my breath) . Average Deep Score (ADS) 6.5 Zwo) Augustiner Edelstof - 5.6% Brewed in the eponymous brewery in Munich using barley malt. This is a private brewery and quite a rare beer. We weren't too keen; we found it a bit watery, fizzy and cloying. ADS: 4 Drei) Monchhof Kellerbier 5.4% This is a Zwickel style beer, naturally cloudy. Fermentation yeast is still in the bottle giving it a bit of a bready smell. It’s a bit like an old geezers mild, but if you like a mild, alright. ADS: 5.5 Vier) Gaffel Kolsch - 4.6% Always served as chilled as possible, it is a blond beer from the Koln area. they say 'soft fruitiness', I suggest 'bit like Carling'. ADS: 3.5 Fünf) Andechs Weisse - 5.5% A wheat beer from Bavaria, fruity and refreshing. Apparantly, a breakfast beer with pretzels and sausage. Not on my watch. Historically the weis beer was brewed for the royal family. We rather liked this one... ADS: 6 After five drinks it was break time with many sausages and cheese bought out (very nice thank you), a chance to mingle outside. have a fag, stretch the legs and meet some more of our fellow tasters, all of whom were very nice. On return, given that we’d all now had five drinks, everyone was more loquacious and mobile, which Phil seemed briefly to take slight umbrage at as people were talking amongst themselves rather than listening. This eventually settled down but I think general consensus among the people we spoke to was that although it was very interesting, as the drinks flowed and people loosened up maybe the teaching aspect could’ve been lessened to allow the participants to ask questions or generally discuss the beers amongst themeselves. That’s not to say Phil wasn’t doing a great job, and we were having great fun. Sechs) Schneider Weisse - 5.4% Another Bavarian beer brewed by family brewers in a community

setting. Quite thick, fruity banana flavour. Quite warming (pace self...) we liked this one as well. ADS: 6.75 Sieben) Schlenkerla Weisse 5.2% Now we go into uncharted territory smoked beer!! Smoked barley with beech wood chip. Reminiscent of bacon and ashtray. Despite this we are not fans. ADS: 3.5 Acht) Schlenkerla Rauch Maerzen - 5.1% Smoked once more. Our glorious editor says "chewy", I suggest Benilyn with a wash for mental hospital walls. Don't let us put you off though. ADS: 2.5

lot more varied than we’d thought and especially Ian & Daryl for continuing to put on interesting booze-related events. It’s a shame not more things like this are done in town, or, if they are, that they’re not more widely advertised. And so - Bis zum nächstes mal - auf wiedersehen, leute!” The Half and Half, 282 High Street, Croydon CR0 1NG - 020 8726 0080 Opening Hours: Mon-Fri 12:00pm-12:00am; Sat 3:00pm-12:00am; Sun 3:00-11:00pm

Neun) Andechs Doppelbock - 7.0% Thats more like it! Dark beer from the famous Andechser monastery. Reminiscent, I thought, of a Chimay or Duvel. I must have liked this as my notes make no sense whatsoever. ADS: 6 And finally, the star of the show... Zehn) Scneider Eisbock 12%!! Bockbier, reverse distilled using a freeze process. It tastes very strong, quite heavy and rich but very tasty - could have drunk a lot of this (it does come in very small bottles). An incredibly rare beer apparently - typical, as it was our champion and I think the consensus in the room was that this was the best. ADS: 7.75 Despite the fact we can’t recall getting home, we do recall that we had a lovely time. After the inevitable initial reticence you expect in a room full of people you don’t know it was a cordial, enjoyable night. I will certainly go down to the Half for further events and we applaude Phil for making us see that German beers are a 8

Glamorous assistants Ian (left) and Daryl Exotic booze, pretzels, mini sausages, tasting notes, done!

treatham. An ice rink, a club above the ice rink, a seemingly constant traffic jam by the park, a disastrous Sing Luther gig at that big pub on the High Street about 20 years ago. That’s it, that’s the depth of my knowledge of the place. Luckily though, Graham ‘Nipper’ Smith, seems to know it a bit better and has been busy beavering away organising a host of gigs in aid of Oxjam, a month long unique country-wide festival where thousands of fundraising music events are put on by ordinary people - from large-scale festivals to local sponsored busks - to raise money and awareness of Oxfam’s fight against poverty across the globe. In Nipper’s case, he’s arranged 5 events, an exciting assortment of local bands, acoustic acts and a few surprises to create a mini-festival based around Streatham High Road in the last two weeks of October

2011. As he says; “We want to see Streatham take it’s place as an area brimming with diverse, vibrant and globally-minded talent!” But don’t worry if you, like me, don’t know anything about the diverse, vibrant and globally-minded talent in Streatham as he’s managed to persuade (I’m sure there was no persuasion required for such a good cause) a host of Croydon’s finest to head north-ish, for the events. The lineups and dates can be found at the end of this little article, and in our listings, but suffice to say the one of the highlights, for us, and the climax of the events is an all-dayer at the Pied Bull (starts 2pm) featuring, as headliners, friends of the mag Junk Time Party (described in this very issue by Auntie May thusly: “If you've seen them before, you'll know that you can only leave a JTP gig on a high. I call it Happy Music.” And also, some time ago by Mat Martin as “Cockney Rock Superstars” a moniker they quite liked, actually). The rest of the lineup too is pretty special, with more friends of the mag in the shape of the always excellent Banned Sauce and a host of Oval regulars like Big Joe Louis, the fantastic Errol Linton, the Brothers of Muva Shovel and loads more, including exOval guvnor Graeme Miall and Nipper himself on the wheels of steel (I have never used 10

that expression before and hope I never do again). The press release describes the event: “A diverse range of bands and solo performers will concoct a heady mixture of blues, rockabilly, surf and funk. Oh! and there’ll be a few other things thrown in too!” They’re hoping to raise about £1000 for Oxfam, which seems to me eminently do-able given the quality of the acts across the 5 gigs, so do yourselves a favour, hop on a bus to South West 16, have a damn good time and raise lots of lovely moolah for a brilliant cause. We’ll see you at the bar... ello again folks. Well, I've managed to persuade Edith that it's OK to venture out again following those nasty riots in August. She'd been spending all her time with a small paintbrush touching up her solar meerkats in the rockery and periodically checking the sky for falling satellite debris but was tempted out of the house with a ticket to see Ian Anderson at Camberley. I have to say, I was highly untempted, and arranged instead to pick her up afterwards. After waiting in vain for an hour I eventually found her sobbing by the stage door - apparently Mr. Anderson had reluctantly agreed to have a picture taken with her but her plans to form a new supergroup with

the beer until I caught sight of her samba'ing merrily past, clinging joyfully on to a strapping, half-naked tribal dancer. Apparently the jobsworth policewoman guarding the barrier refused to let her back through so she thought she might as well join the fun. After the procession, we wandered down and found a good spot to watch the fireworks. Despite being scheduled to start at 9.45, they were still shunting barges back and forth until 10.15 while we shivered on the riverbank (note to organisers - if you know it will take an extra half hour, why not start half an hour earlier?) but all was forgiven when the display started. I'm a sucker for fireworks and this was the best I've

“I’ve been so impressed by harmonica players I decided to have lessons, although Googling ‘mouth organ’ wasn’t such a good plan. . .” Gilbert O'Sullivan, the other of her heroes, turned to custard when Ian completely refused to co-operate, despite her proposing the rather brilliant name of JethrO'Tullivan. Our next outing was to the wonderful Thames Festival on the South Bank. We spent a pleasant afternoon dodging light showers, getting a bit lost on the Thames Path diversion and grumbling about having to pay £4.50 for a pint of beer before we crossed the bridge and lined up to watch the Night Carnival parade. I was so entranced by the prancing remote-control horses and magnificent dragons I didn't realise that Edith had attempted to cross the road to Walkabout to relieve herself of some of

12

seen, and lovely and loud. Music-wise this month I popped down to the Oval to catch Junk Time Party's return gig. If you've seen them before, you'll know that you can only leave a JTP gig on a high. I call it Happy Music. 'The Devil Made Me Do It' is a brilliant example of this and with the addition of Dave 'Devilmouth' Sears on the harmonica you'd be hard pressed to end a show on a better note. And talking of Junk Time Party, they opened the Croydon All Stars Charity Gig in support of those affected by the riots. They were followed by the newlyscalped 23 Enigma (I was pleased to ascertain that they've kept their hair in a plastic bag on the living room floor), and

then we were treated to the longawaited return of Kitty Hudson, with the talented Robin Guy standing in on drums (I am reliably informed, and can confirm, that he is indeed the UK's Hottest Rock Drummer). Richie "shall we do a song?" Hudson introduced a couple of new numbers which I look forward to hearing again at Witchfest on 12th November. Miss Nicaragua amazed everyone by playing without their trademark balaclavas, revealing that they are in fact. . . no I'm not going to tell you - you'll have to find out for yourselves. Penultimate on the bill were Banned Sauce with plenty of harmonica action and a drummer with a Taliban beard (which reminded Edith she was overdue for a trim). In fact, I've been so impressed by harmonica players this month I decided to have lessons myself. Googling for 'mouth organ' though was not such a good plan but I can report that I am now skilled in blowing and breathing at the same time! Headlining the show were the wonderful Boot Led Zeppelin who played with energy and trouserage and then it was just left for me to wander round persuading people to share their winnings with me in the thrilling 'bar tab raffle'. And thanks must go to Andy, Geoff and partly Elmo for doing a grand job with the music. That's all for this month - I'm off to bash the dirt off my snow-boots as my friendly local weatherman informs me that winter's planning an early onslaught this year. Stay safe and upright!

Another new addition to the Croydon pub family hurrah!

P

eople who know me will know I spent 10 relentlessly dull years working as a civil servant in various buildings on the Wellesley Road, the putative highlights of which were mainly lunchtime drinking and any time spent away from the place, preferably when I should’ve been in the place. One of our regular haunts was the Lansdowne Hotel Bar around the corner, with its attached sandwich shop (who did a mean tuna mayonnaise sandwich). Skip forward the 8 years I’ve been the Editor of this organ, and to be honest I hadn’t given much thought to that particular area of Croydon until little posts and event invites started popping up on facebook for ‘The Lansdowne Lounge’, hailing itself as new. And you know us, we’d go to the opening of an envelope, so we thought we’d better get down there and find out what the coup is. The coup, as it turns out, is a huge refurb inside, still recognisable with the stained glass behind the bar (glad they kept that), but with all new everything else, all modern and clean-lined with plenty of seating, a big screen for sports and a healthy lack of ancient career civil servants mumbling into their pints of mild. Apparently the old bar had a bit of a bad rep, but all that’s gone now. The staff are exceptionally friendly, especially Annette the Manageress, they pride themselves on doing good food and on now being a smart, modern bar. We popped down there on a Friday night, where there were several leaving do’s going on, and we managed to hit their Happy Hour, meaning that a pint of San Miguel was £2.50 (I think, it got a bit

hazy), but even at other times the booze prices are eminently reasonable and, as they’re Palace fans, they also offer a Happy Hour from 2 hours before every home game kick off. On the events side, as they’ve only relaunched recently they’re still finding their feet, but they’ve already had some live music and plan to have much more, they’ve got a Christmas Fair coming up, they regularly have Palace memorabilia on sale and the end of October sees them hosting an Ann Summers Party. You can keep up date with everything going on at the Lansdowne on their facebook pageLansdowne Croydon. As you know, we here at Deep shed a tear every time a pub or bar closes (well, with the exception of some on the High Street which are absolute holes) and we do a little Snoopy dance when one opens, especially if it’s a bit off the beaten track. The Lansdowne seems to us to be a decent addition to Croydon’s bar scene, and one that’ll keep improving as more people get to know of it as a little hideaway away from the main drag, so we suggest, if you’re down that way, or even if you have to make a special journey, that you give it a go. Approved! The Lansdowne Lounge, 1 Lansdowne Road, Croydon (just off Wellesley Road).
