LETTER EDITOR’S

How lucky have we been with such glorious weather, let’s hope it continues through the rest of the summer.

1

August is the month where we’re all usually in holiday mode, whether it’s just taking some me time, jetting off for a weekend or a two-week indulgent beach break, but this year due to the pandemic it’s a little bit different, plans are changing all the time, and UK staycations are more popular than they.ve ever been, so if you’re planning a last minute get-away, travel for later in the year or even just a day at the beach, we’ve got all the inspiration you’ll need (page 47).

Summer is also a time when we all make the most of outdoor living, it’s when we decide to pour ourselves a chilled glass of wine and just enjoy. It’s an extension of our indoor living space, and most of our dining is done alfresco, we have some great recipes (page 32) and wines (page 35) that are perfect to serve to family and friends this summertime. Whether it is in life or business we like to think we are moving forward – making progress towards our goals whatever they may be. We also know that progress doesn’t usually happen in a straight line, it involves peaks and troughs and navigating those can be a bit of a challenge for all sorts of reasons, page 10 Helps you navigate through the highs and lows of life. We’ve not one, but two giveaways this issue, tickets to Cafe Mambo Ibiza in Bedford Park (page 44) and a beautiful handmade silver polar bear necklace from Jana Reinhardt (page 19), which one will you enter? Until Next Month, Enjoy the Summer.

The Peaks and

Troughs of Progress Whether it is in life or business we like to think we are moving forward – making progress towards our goals whatever they may be and guaranteed they will be different for each of us. But what we also know is that progress doesn’t usually happen in a straight line.

Progress involves peaks and troughs and navigating those can be a bit of a challenge for all sorts of reasons but one is that we aren’t standing from afar looking at our progress we are well and truly in it – standing on a peak looking over the world or sitting in trough feeling despondent.

In some ways progress can be quite hard to define – unless we have very specific goals – we may see the indicators of progress in a particular area but as complex humans we are trying to make progress while life is happening AND we may be trying to make progress in many different areas at once so it’s far from straightforward to make an accurate assessment of how much progress we’ve made. This year in particular there have been many peaks and troughs associated with the pandemic a situation none of us sought but we’ve all had to cope with one way or another. Handling Hurdles We have probably all had times when we’ve faced obstacles in our way - sometimes they mean we need to change course entirely other times just making minor changes can see us moving forward again. How we handle those hurdles will have a bearing on the progress we make.

Pause to Reflect If we are serious about our goals and determined to make progress sometimes we can be so focussed on looking forward that we forget to consider how far we may have come.

It’s nice on the peak to enjoy the heights BUT it can also be useful to look back, see what you have achieved remind yourself of the skills, talents and sheer determination it may have taken to get there. One of the other benefits of being on a peak is that often from there you can see the bigger pictures and a pause may mean that you may shift goals slightly or see other possibilities that you simply couldn’t see before. Having reached a peak don’t waste the opportunities it affords. When we are on the peak we

can get very caught up in what is happening around us but by taking time to pause and reflect we can give some time to what is going on within us.

Staying Motivated But of course, progress involves some hard climbs when motivating ourselves can be tough and it also involves troughs. They may be times when we feel we aren’t making any progress, or when everything feels like it is against us, that we keep pushing doors but nothing much is happening. Or we may just feel exhausted from previous efforts whether that is physical or emotional. Sometimes we just have to allow a bit of time perhaps some rest and we’ll feel that things start to move again. But beware of the temptation to become downhearted in a trough it can be easy to wallow, to feel sorry for yourself and when that happens it makes staying motivated very hard indeed.

To help yourself stay motivated it can help to accept where you are or what has happened. It doesn’t mean you are going to stay there but sometimes we may change course because of it. As humans we can find change a challenge. We’d set out expecting certain things to happen and when they don’t or they don’t happen in the way we thought they would then it can be tempting to give up – at least for a while. But life is dynamic and changeable – new things come to light, situations change, people around us change and that means that sometimes we must change and adjust if we are to keep moving forward. Other things which will help motivation are remembering why you started trying to achieve whatever it is – your ‘why’ – has it changed or has the going just become tougher? Surrounding yourself with people that share your dreams, or are at least supportive of them can also help you stay motivated.

But at the end of the day of course it is up to you. You can make choices each and every day about what you do and whether or not you keep trying to make progress, pursue your goals, get to where you wan to be in life whether you find yourself on a peak or a trough in terms of your own journey. Common Sun Protection Mistakes Dr Rayhaneh Zahedi, a dermatology speciality doctor at Quality Health Care Ltd shares the common mistakes people make when in the sun.

“Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the UK”, explains Dr Zahedi. “We’re seeing increasing numbers all the time.”

Dr Zahedi is a skin surgeon, who removes skin cancers and abnormal moles on a weekly basis. “I see the damaging effects not just from an aesthetic perspective, such as wrinkles and pigmentation, but also the cancerous lesions people risk getting when they don’t protect their skin.” Younger people are most vulnerable in the sun Dr Zahedi warns that young people are at highest risk. “The most likely cause of skin cancer is our lifestyle in the first 20 years of life, as well as an accumulation over the years. This is because the skin is more delicate and therefore vulnerable when we are younger.”

SPF in makeup doesn’t give enough protection Dr Zahedi cautions against relying on the SPF in your makeup. “It worries me when people only wear sunscreen in their foundation or moisturiser. Not only will the SPF probably be a very low factor, but it’s likely that you’re not reapplying it every two hours, which is important. Most SPF in makeup doesn’t provide physical protection (more on that later), and most people don’t apply it everywhere it is needed, like your ears and the back of the neck. My advice? Stick to standalone sunscreen and apply your makeup afterwards if you would like.”

Skin cancer affects all skin tones People with all skin tones need to protect themselves, according to Dr Zahedi. “Skin cancer can affect everyone – for example Bob Marley passed away from melanoma”, says Dr Zahedi. “While those who are fair skinned, red haired or burn easily are at more risk, no one is completely protected. Skin cancer can also be more fatal for people with darker skin due to late identification and diagnosis.” Choose a physical sunscreen The debate between chemical and mineral sunscreens rages on. Due to the large particle size of mineral sunscreen zinc oxide, some mineral sunscreens can cause a white casting on darker skins tones. Meanwhile, alternative chemical sunscreen filters have become a nogo in the “clean beauty” movement. Dr Zahedi shares her expertise: “I would rely on a mineral, physical sunscreen. Physical sunscreens give you a physical barrier of protection against the sun’s harmful rays. They can be thick, heavy and cast a white tone on skin, which can be off-putting. However, there are amazing

physical sunscreens out there. My favourite is AlumierMD’s Sheer Hydration Broad Spectrum Sunscreen SPF 40 (Versatile Tint) which is a sheer physical sunscreen, that provides powerful broad-spectrum protection against harmful UVA and UVB rays. It uses a combination of zinc oxide and titanium dioxide while moisturizing with vitamin E. It’s really versatile and the tint blends beautifully on the skin. Your skin actually looks better with it on, it’s gives a lovely sheen and is a great primer for makeup.”

Sunscreen doesn’t equal breakouts “I treat a lot of people with acne”, says Dr Zahedi. “Generally, people with acne can find SPF blocks their pores, which triggers their underlying inflammatory skin condition. If you are acne or breakout prone, look for a non-comedogenic (non-blocking) SPF. I would recommend AlumierMD’s Clear Shield Broad Spectrum SPF 42, as it is a lightweight, non-comedogenic physical sunscreen.”

Check your own skin every month Look out for the signs of sun damage. “When I am assessing someone’s skin, I am looking out for a few key signs”, says Dr Zahedi. “These signs include new skin lumps, brown spots, ulcers, moles that have changed and sores that won’t heal. I recommend checking your own skin on a monthly basis, so you can identify any changes. Look out for pre-cancerous lesions, which are often flaky, scaly and crusty growths, often on the backs of the hands, arms, chest, neck and ears – anywhere exposed and often where people forget to apply sunscreen. We can treat these with prescription creams, freezing or remove them surgically, reducing the risk of developing skin cancer.” Use more sunscreen than you think One of the most common misconceptions is how much sunscreen to apply. Most people only apply 25 to 50 percent of the recommended amount of sunscreen required for adequate protection.

“People generally don’t use enough sunscreen”, says Dr Zahedi. “People often don’t like applying it, or when the sun isn’t out people don’t think they need to wear their sunscreen. It’s so important to find a luxurious feeling SPF that you enjoy applying. AlumierMD’s sunscreens feel like a moisturiser; think of it as another part of your skincare regime. Generally, I recommend you need to put on more sunscreen than you think, and don’t forget all the areas of your skin like your eyelids, lips and ears.” For more information on AlumierMD products, visit www.alumiermd.co.uk For more information about www.qualityhealthcareltd.com

Midlife Madness We probably all know the story of the Emperor’s new clothes, where he is essentially duped into believing he is wearing some high fashion outfit but is actually naked as he rides through his Kingdom. The weavers or swindlers charged with making the new clothes preyed upon the Emperor’s vanity and got him to believe that there were some clothes when blatantly the Emperor could see none. So, why didn’t he speak up or why indeed did none of his household speak up – they could clearly see he was being duped but they all went along with it too? I guess there are times we might all be tempted to do it – I remember a mate raving about a book – in fact most the country raved about it (Wolf Hall) but it simply never grabbed me and I waded through every page! But there were times when people spoke about it to me that I thought it would be much easier to agree it was brilliant than explain yet again that frankly I got more pleasure from Thomas the Tank Engine!

I must confess to loving food, enjoying dining out in restaurants and it’s something I chat about with mates. But being a person of not unlimited means makes me aware that although I love a nice environment, a good range of food ‘types’, great presentation, friendly staff and in many ways don’t mind paying for these, my purse strings do have their limits! When I mentioned I’d been to a particularly prestigious restaurant lately – must point out at this point I wasn’t paying or I wouldn’t have gone- to a few different friends, I must say I think we entered an Emperor’s new clothes kind of landscape.

I grant you the environment at this place is lovely and staff are helpful, friendly and also sort of discreet but

surely there has to be some sense of reality when it comes to the price of food. There appears to be a direct correlation between portion sizes and prices – the dearer the food the smaller the portion! Which is kind of crazy in itself. Then there is the whole thing with names, sometimes it can be very hard to tell what you might be served. Let’s be honest we’ve all watched Master Chef and our food vocabulary is probably more extensive than it was a while ago. But when it says it comes with a particular ingredient I do like to actually be able to taste it. And if I’m honest there is a limit to what I would pay for a plate of food however delicious, it is just food – it will be eaten and digested and …….. Obviously, some of the price is to do with the ingredients and like many ‘good’ restaurants they use locally sourced organic veg and local butchers etc – for fish its tougher as we are miles from the sea but they definitely get fish that is fresh and delivered speedily. But a carrot is still a carrot! Others are to do with the skill of the chef and they are obviously pretty darned good in this place. So, we discussed the restaurant and the food and everyone I spoke to said how brilliant it is and I agreed. But I had this strange feeling that we were colluding in some pretend game, yes, it is good but what is okay to charge for a bowl of soup or a tart, very tasty, with a few vegetables carefully arranged around it? Clearly everyone I spoke to felt differently, so I sort of colluded with them agreeing how lovely it was!! Much like the Emperor’s staff who could have said hang on it’s a swindle! You don’t have to worry I’m not about to ride naked anywhere and I’m not an Emperor but I am going to try harder to be someone who calls a spade a spade or a least a bowl of soup a bowl of soup and that it has to have a pragmatic upper price point for those of us of average means. Surely!

Sleep Better This Summertime After a long lockdown and restrictions lifting, most of us are looking forward to some fun in the warmer weather. However, something that can often feel lacking in the warm months is sleep. We spoke to Dr Alka Patel, GP, health coach, lifestyle medicine physician, and the creator and founder of The Lifestyle First Method®, who shared her expertise on why we struggle to sleep in the heat and what we can do to help. Why do we struggle to sleep in the heat? To successfully initiate sleep, your core body temperature needs to decrease a little. That's why you'll always find it easier to fall asleep in a room that is too cold rather than too hot. Is there an ideal room temperature? A room temperature of around 18.3°C is ideal for the sleep of most people, which might sound very cool.

How can we lower body temperature in the warmer months? One way to control your core body temperature is through the surface of your skin. So, warming your hands and feet will help your body's core body temperature drop. That's why you sometimes find yourself putting your feet out from under the duvet. If you don't have the natural drop of an evening temperature, your brain doesn't receive the instructions from the hypothalamus that causes a release of melatonin. Having a hot bath in the evening is a good way to fall asleep quickly but it's not because you're nice and warm, it's because the hot bath brings blood to the surface of your skin and the dilated blood vessels on the surface quickly help to radiate out your inner heat, causing your core body temperature to drop.

A hot bath prior to bed can induce 10 to 15% more deep in REM sleep, as well. Your biological circadian rhythm coordinates a drop in core body temperature as you near bedtime reaching its low point about two hours after sleep onset. This temperature rhythm is not dependent on whether you are actually asleep, so even if you stayed

awake all night your core body temperature would still show a pattern of dropping.

Alka’s Restful Night’s Sleep Tips: Sleep Music - Music can help reduce stress and distress, so listening to soothing music before bedtime can help you to relax. Try and avoid music that is overstimulating. Sounds of nature such as the ocean or birds may help you relax into a more restful mental space. Instrumental classical music is also a good choice. Just avoid your favourite sing-along tune!

Sleep Mask - Light can have a huge impact on our sleepwake cycle so try and expose yourself to as much natural light as you can during the day and keep your room as dark as possible at night. Wearing an eye mask at night can help, so why not try one? Experiment with what you like – there’s lots to choose from – ones you can warm up or cool down; cashmere, silk, or velvet… Sleep Alarm – It may sound odd as many of us are used to setting an alarm to wake up, but an alarm to go to bed means having a fixed bedtime and a fixed wake-up time. This is a very good way to reset your body clock. Consistency is key - stick to the same times at the weekend and weekdays. If you do want a lie-in during the weekend, don't let the difference between weekday and weekend wake-up times exceed a 2-hour difference. Sleep Breathing – Deep breathing can switch off the stress response and trigger the relaxation response, easing you into a state of sleep.

• Lie down on your back with your head on a comfortable pillow. • Place one hand just below your rib cage and the other on the top of your chest. • As you breathe in, feel your stomach rise up against your lower hand. As you breathe out, feel your stomach move away from your lower hand. • Keep your upper hand still • Try and slow your breath down to 5 – 6 breathes a minute

Olivia Burton’s Tea Party Collection The Peggy Porschen x Olivia Burton Tea Party Afternoon Tea set brings the entire collection to life and will be available to buy all summer.

Accessories brand Olivia Burton has unveiled a new collection inspired by the traditional afternoon tea, with three new watch designs and accompanying jewellery styles.

The Tea Party collection draws inspiration from traditional tea set prints and dainty sweet delights, as well as a Wonderland-esque tea party. Available in three soft colourways, the new watch designs feature pastel and ornate florals and dreamy pops of blue on the dials, with complementing strap styles.

The whimsical collection’s biscuit-inspired jewellery pieces are finished with a sweet, heart-centred motif and delicate detailing.

Jane Hebden, Head of Creative at Olivia Burton, said: “Tea Party feels quintessentially ‘Olivia Burton’ with the floral details, pastel palettes and vintage styles. “But beyond this, the thought behind this collection was one of comfort and well-being. “Tea is calming, it’s something we have turned to throughout the years when life gets overwhelming and building a collection around this concept feels very relevant right now.”

East London-based Olivia Burton, which was established in 2012 by best friends Jemma Fennings and Lesa Bennett, has marked the launch of the new collection by teaming up with cake aficionados Peggy Porschen.

Set within the fairy-tale pink interior of the Peggy Porschen Parlours in London, the afternoon tea features pastel palettes, delicate floral features and sweet details all inspired by the Tea Party collection.

Peggy Porschen, Founder and Creative Director of Peggy Porschen Cakes, said: “The whimsical personality of our fairy-tale Parlours provides a picture-perfect canvas to bring to life Olivia Burton’s playful Tea Party collection.

“As so many of us seek to devote lost time to long overdue catch-ups this summer, our Peggy Porschen x Olivia Burton Afternoon Tea gives a much-needed dose of escapism. Our special-edition offering is a sweet treat tour de force, based on an enchanting procession of exquisite cakes, pots of tea and fabulous florals.” Find the Olivia Burton Tea Party Collection online at www.oliviaburton.com

Celebrating 70 Years of the Peak District The Peak District National Park has been attracting visitors for 70 years, ever since its designation in April 1951 as the UK's first national park. The rugged landscape covers nearly 1,500km and features heather-flecked moors and gritstone rock formations. Set amongst the surrounding hills in The Peak District – at a height of over 1000ft – is the historic market and spa town of Buxton.

The centrepiece of the historic spa town of Buxton is Buxton Crescent, and following its successful launch in October last year – after a painstaking restoration period of more than a decade – the hotel is delighted to be able to welcome guests once again. Buxton Crescent is just a 10-minute drive from the rolling hills of The Peak District which offers picturesque trails through the iconic stony plateaus and deep valleys. It is the perfect base for those keen to explore the area which is also home to one of the country’s most beautiful stately homes, 16th-century Chatsworth House, Bakewell and The Pavilion Gardens, a beautiful, historic venue dating back to 1871 which shows off the Victorian splendour of Buxton.

The opening of Buxton Crescent has also revived the wellness traditions of this historic spa town and once again Buxton is inviting guests to ‘take the waters’ just as The Fifth Duke of Devonshire had intended. Buxton’s fame dates back to Roman times, thanks to its pale blue water which bubbles up from thermal springs beneath The Crescent. However, it was the 18th century which saw the development of the town and Buxton history, with the building of The Crescent by the 5th Duke of Devonshire. He built Buxton Crescent in the 1780’s to establish Buxton as a fashionable spa town and today the hotel harnesses the unique therapeutic properties of the mineral water,

offering hydrotherapy, spa treatments, lifestyle programmes, healthy cuisine and superb facilities all in a historic setting. After a day of exploring the surrounding countryside, guests can unwind and take advantage of this unique spa offering. The hotel is home to three pools – the Thermal Pool which is a fully refurbished Victorian pool boasting the unique feature of having Buxton mineral rich water flowing into it, which is heated and left chemically untreated; a relaxation pool with an atmospheric dark ceiling pierced with shafts of light and an impressive indoor-outdoor rooftop pool. The spa is also home to eight treatment rooms with a number of the rooms featuring original stained-glass windows. Amongst the treatments on offer, highlights include the Co2 Infusion Mineral Bath with Buxton’s water aiding micro circulation and lowering blood pressure as well as the Signature Wave Balance which takes place in the Thermal Pool and uses therapeutic rhythms to relax the mind and body.

Buxton Crescent’s restoration has combined the outstanding history of the building’s 18th century exterior with features reminiscent of the era, such as the chandeliers, painted ceilings and stained-glass windows. All this is complimented with stylish furniture and modern comforts along with stunning views through wooden sash windows over the slate roofs of the historic town. BOOK IT

carefully inter-woven, seamlessly layered and thoughtfully connected. Synergy and connection are the key tenants of the concept.

The Spa programmes can take place over 2-3 days, based on individual assessment. Personalised treatment plans will target specific issues such as anxiety, fatigue and weight amongst others. Alongside the treatments, a specific diet is created and Chenot diet, built around light food such as fruits, vegetables and animal protein, is served in Selman’s restaurants in order to assist the detoxification process. The Spa also offers traditional rituals such as the classic black soap scrub with a Hammam, and a detoxifying Rhassoul natural mineral clay wrap.

Guests can visit the stud farm and meet the international prize-winning horses.
