ADD A LITTLE LUXURY INTO YOUR LIFE
Luxury, to some, is aspirational, it can also be less about money and more about a ‘feeling’. At a time when everybody could do with a little emotional boost, there are small things that we can all do daily to access that feeling of luxury.
By adding a few little changes and routines to your life, everyone can achieve a luxury lifestyle in some small way. Cleo Anderson, the Luxury Travel Curator for the Oscars gift bags- and host of an upcoming luxury travel show on LUXE.TV - is sharing her top tips with Affinity readers on how everyone can add a little dash of luxury to their lives.
1. Fill your home with your very own scent
To create a boutique hotel feel at home, simply add fragrance. By placing diffusers and candles in the right areas you can elevate your home; choosing the same scent throughout your property will give you your signature home scent – Cleo particularly likes vanilla and fig.
2. Cook from scratch, using high quality ingredients handpicked from local markets. Cooking from scratch with quality ingredients can help you achieve the luxury restaurant experience at a fraction of the cost. To take this to a higher level, set your table as if you were in a fancy restaurant with a nice tablecloth, some wine glasses, and good napkins.
3. Stop by at a 5-star hotel for a drink. There is nothing like getting dressed up for a cocktail or two at a high-end hotel bar. Sit at the bar and take in your surroundings – make sure to stay in the moment and relish the experience.
4. Visit your local museums and art galleries
Many people will visit museums and art galleries when they are on holiday in a new city or town, but how many people visit their local attractions? Cleo explains, “When it comes to feeling cultured, this is a luxury experience that I try to implement into my life whenever I can. As a bonus, there is usually a lovely café or restaurant where you can stop off for either a drink or a meal. My favourite place to go is the Victoria and Albert Museum in London where the canteen is simply spectacular.”
5. Create a heavenly sleeping environment
Take some inspiration from luxury hotels and add decorative cushions in complementary colours to your bedroom. Quality bed linen is also key; not only will it last longer and look stylish, but it can also help keep you cool in hot weather. When it comes to your bedroom think ‘plush’.
6. Add fresh flowers to your home
Fresh flowers have the power to elevate a room, and they do not have to be expensive. Cleo prefers white orchids, as they last longer than cut flowers and you therefore you do not have to replace them every week. “I love that white orchid feel luxurious and a little bit exotic”.
7. Add some gorgeous lounge wear and lingerie sets to your wardrobe – and actually WEAR them
Adding luxury items to your wardrobe can enhance your mood – if you look good, you feel good. Cleo states, “even if I am at home alone I still make a point of wearing gorgeous pieces and a spritz of my favourite perfume. The key here is that they are for me and not anyone else.”
8. Create a home spa routine
Self-care is really important when it comes luxury. You don’t need to have expensive products to create a spa experience; just by spending quality time with yourself and by taking care of your skin and body, you can improve your mood. Cleo notes, “When you do visit hotels don’t forget that you are paying for the toiletries. I love to bring home the ones that perhaps I didn’t use as an extended reminder of a wonderful trip. Also, don’t underestimate the power of a beautifully presented bathroom – quality toiletries add to the effect.”
9. Enjoy a drink on a patio or balcony (or near a scenic window)
If you are not lucky enough to have a garden, a patio or an outside balcony, dress up a window with some fresh flowers and sit with a nice cold glass of Perrier or Prosecco and take five minutes for yourself while observing your surroundings. Cleo expands, “I tend to keep fresh fruit in the fridge for garnish purposes; I will add a slice of strawberry to the rim of a glass of Prosecco, or a slice of lemon to sparkling water.”
10. Practice gratitude
Cleo practices gratitude every day; she believes that it is essential to take some time at the end of her day to note everything that she is thankful for. “Although this practice is free, this has been one of the most powerful practices in my life when it comes to attracting beautiful things, wonderful experiences, and overall happiness.”
Try adding even a few of these suggestions to your daily routine and achieve a slice of the Hollywood luxury lifestyle.

Expert Tricks to Make your Food Last Longer
Are your vegetables going off after just a few days?
Throwing away fresh food before you’ve had a chance to eat it?
The average UK household throws away £800’s worth of food each year*, that equates to roughly £66 a month.
For many, knowing how to make fresh food last longer has become essential, and with less food waste there is ultimately less cost.
Add salt to your milk once opened
Depending on the type of milk you use, once opened it can last anywhere from four to ten days if kept in the fridge.
However you can stretch that timeframe a bit further by adding a pinch of salt to the carton immediately after opening, this is as salt is a preservative and so deters bacteria from growing. But do make sure to give the carton a good shake and place it into the fridge as soon as possible.
Store your milk in the coolest part of the fridge
It is also best to avoid storing your milk in the fridge door. The door is in fact the warmest part of the fridge as it is furthest away from the cooling system. So instead keep your milk at the back of the middle or higher shelves for maximum cool to lengthen the shelf life.
Wrap hard cheese in parchment paper
Ditch the plastic packaging and instead wrap hard cheese in parchment or baking paper, this allows the cheese to breathe to avoid drying out but also prevents any extra moisture and therefore mould from growing. Hard cheese can usually last anywhere up to four weeks when stored correctly in the fridge.
Vinegar bath your veggies
A great way to disinfect all of your fruits and veggies is to give them a vinegar bath. The vinegar solution should be a 1:3 ratio of vinegar to water in either a bowl or your clean sink. Empty your produce into the solution and let sit for 15 minutes. Once done you can rinse and thoroughly dry your produce before moving them into their respective storage containers.
The vinegar solution disinfects, cleans and removes any bacteria from the produce that might break down the food quicker. The solution should not be strong enough that you can taste it on the produce afterwards and enables your veggies to last for up to two weeks.
Store berries with a paper towel
Once dried, berries should be stored in airtight glass containers with a dry paper towel. The paper towel absorbs any excess moisture which will prevent mould from growing. Changing the paper towel every other day will allow for maximum freshness and a shelf life of up to three weeks.
Keep your bananas separate from other fruits
All fruits produce a certain level of a gas known as ‘ethylene’, fruits such as bananas produce a higher concentration when they are ready to ripen as it speeds up the ripening process. Other fruits that fall into the high
ethylene producing category are - apples, peaches, pears, melons and the avocado to name a few.
Keeping the ethylene producing fruits, specifically bananas, away from your ethylene sensitive fruits will prevent excessive exposure to the gas, allowing the fruit to ripen naturally and therefore lasting longer. Depending on the fruit itself they can last anywhere from three to five days to a few weeks at room temperature.
To slow the ripening process for bananas you can also wrap the stem in cling film or the slightly more eco friendly aluminium foil. Wrapping as a bunch or individually will add a day or two on to the ripening process which usually lasts between three to five days (at room temperature).
Treat your fresh herbs like flowers
For those who prefer fresh herbs over dried, a top tip is to treat them like flowers. Add water to a jar and place the herbs inside with a plastic bag over the top. The water helps to keep the herbs fresh whilst the bag acts as a barrier against any excess moisture.
If your fridge doesn’t accommodate upright jars you can also store your fresh herbs in an airtight glass container (or plastic bag if you prefer) with a damp paper towel, this again helps the herbs to retain their moisture so they don’t dry out too quickly and wilt.
Both of these methods can aid your fresh herbs into lasting up to three weeks
Freeze your fresh herbs
If you prefer fresh herbs but find you don’t use them up quickly enough, you can also freeze them. You can store fresh cut herbs in olive oil in ice cube trays and freeze them for perfect portions. Alternatively water can also be used in place of oil.
With water this method can also be used for fresh garlic and ginger.
Ice your bread
If you find that your bread has become stale, grab an ice cube and run it over the loaf before popping into the oven for 10 minutes. Alternatively, you can also douse the loaf in water. This adds moisture back into the bread and allows it to become edible once more. The bread should then be used within the day.
A freshly made loaf of bread can last up to four days whereas a store bought loaf will last up to one week.
Freeze your nuts
Most nuts and seeds have a shelf life of three to six months. In order to extend their lifespan they are best stored in cool, dark spaces; although the back of the cupboard is suitable, storing them in the fridge can help them to stay fresher for longer. If you find that six months is not enough time to nibble your way through your nuts, then you’ll be pleased to hear that they can be frozen – which extends their shelf life to one year.

Midlife Madness
Having recently had various guests staying with us I find that I am totally bemused by the time it takes some people to get ready. Now I’m saying this as a mother of three who lived with them through teenage years when getting ready for an evening out, especially but not exclusively for the female variety was a project that could take hours!
Many of these guests were in fact people who were retired but had held down jobs with responsibility, outside the home, so I’m assuming they either got up in the middle of the night, never actually made it to work on time at all or retirement has changed them.
So, what happens when we retire, because if these friends and family are anything to go by I will keep working as long as I possibly can simply so I can keep on leaving the house without it feeling like a lengthy military operation. The causes of the delays are various. For some it is very complex ‘food’ regimes, breakfasts that involve a heady mix of grains, cereals and seeds, special milks, so that the prep time is significant. I mean it takes me 3 mins to ‘make’ myself some cereal (pour it into bowl, add milk) or toast some bread and add cheese, jam or marmalade or even – only on high days and holidays mind you, an egg (about 4 minutes if boiled, fried or scrambled slightly longer if poached) but I am talking here about an hour for breakfast prep!
Then there are the tablets well actually supplements, one relative arrived with a very natty (bought from fishing tackle shop) pill box with about 10 tablets for each day –I enquired what they all were and it turned out only was actually prescribed by the doctor, the rest were supplements, to keep joints healthy, bones healthy, eyes healthy, skin young (more on that) hair lustrous etc etc. In essence a concerted attempt to stave off the impact of ageing – which I get and I have to say said relative is looking pretty good for her years, but they all need taking
in a precise order some before food, some with food and some after food! Add this into breakfast prep time and you can see how morning routines get lengthy!
Then there are the skin care routines, for me it’s a quick cleanse and moisturise, I didn’t actually see what happened but all I can say is it must have involved a serious number of extra steps because it took a seriously long time. Then add in for these health and beauty conscious older folk a morning exercise routine which you apparently can’t leave the house without doing – and getting off to go anywhere or do anything somehow only happened as it got to be nearly lunchtime.
But of course, I’m actually a little jealous. I love that they can be so single minded, indeed that they follow these set routines and are well and truly invested in maintaining health and wellbeing. I profess to wanting to be well and maintain my health (and obvious good looks!) long into my dotage but really – the effort involved is more than I can manage!
So, mornings for when older guests of this variety are staying, involves relaxing and drinking lots of coffee (maybe not the best plan for my health) while we wait. But then actually I have the last laugh!
You see, I can be ready, absolutely entirely ready but just as we are about to head out I realise I need just one extra toilet visit, oh and although I had my phone and glasses with me while waiting I often can’t lay my eyes on them (looking for glasses when you can’t find glasses is a particular trial) when everyone else is ready to go. Then just as we head to the car I am almost bound to remember some important item and have to run back to the housewhich I’m sure is massively irritating a sort of ‘touche’.
The moral of the story – learn to be patient!!

Creating Your Future
I have the quote below stuck on the mirror in my bedroom and one day my grandson read it and questioned me –there ensued an interesting discussion which got me thinking about how we can create our futures.
Abraham LincolnLife is all about energy and we know that the energy or vibrations we put out can have an impact on what we attract. In that sense we can certainly play a part in creating our own futures.
Below are a few steps you might take in creating a future you want and feel excited about.
Imagination
There is absolutely nothing wrong with dreaming. Almost everything we do starts with an idea – a thought, a dream. So, capitalise on this and let your imagination lead you to what you want. Whether it is a new home, a career, a partner, more money or greater balance in life. Let your imagination run wild and start envisioning the ideal life for yourself.
But don’t ‘just’ imagine what you want, go to town think in detail, colours, style imagine yourself ‘in’ that life – how would it feel. Connect to the emotions that is the most effective kind of visualisation.
Focus
Once you have a detailed sense of what you want then focus upon it – repeat the visualisation, adding to it every time you do and keeping it to the forefront of your mind. But what do we mean by focus – well it means it becomes a central part of our thinking. Part of that often means we need to ignore or at least not be distracted by other things. Of late, there seems to be a view that multi-tasking is the best way of working or managing our multiple responsibilities but actually having a concentrated focus often increases our productivity. We can’t actually give concentrated focus to 2 things at once, one will always take precedence. It’s much better to decide on what is important to you and decide to give full focus to those – it doesn’t mean you can’t ever focus on other things but it does mean you choose to focus first on the things that are important.
Feelings
We’ve already mentioned then when visualising it is worth engaging with your emotions – how would it feel
to be living that dream life? Get used to knowing what makes you feel good and try to fit those things into your life.
But it is also helpful to get in touch with feelings that aren’t so good – what was it that lowered your mood or made you feel hurt or upset, notice those things too and then think how you can reduce the impact they have.
Maybe certain situations always make you feel low – can they be avoided? Maybe certain people or certain comments from certain people always have an impact on your mood, well you can either avoid them or be straight tell them you don’t like the impact of what they say.
Some situations can be very hard to exit yourself from –illness of a loved one for example, but in such situations it’s important to shift your mindset away from the situation, which is often out of your control, to the things which are with your control. It can be very hard to do I don’t deny that but when you can, it can bring much greater peace into your life.
Action
Creating a future, building a life you want to live also involves taking action. Once we have a clear idea of what we want then to move it from a dream to a reality we need to ‘do’ things. They may be very small steps but those small steps can add up and move us forward.
This again may not be easy and lack of confidence, fear of failure or even fear of success can get in the way. If that happens you need to remind yourself that you are deserving of a life you love, of the lifestyle you want and work to adjust your mindset if there is a voice that tells you it won’t happen for you, you don’t deserve that life etc.
Doing is a great way to give a message to our subconscious that we won’t listen to those voices that raise doubt and fear, we will forge ahead to create a life we love. It can also be tempting to find reasons why we can’t start now, often because we aren’t sure we are prepared enough or ready in some way – maybe we worry we don’t have the talents or skills we may need. But launching into some sort of action also quietens those cautious voices.
We only get one chance to live this life. Make sure it is one you enjoy.

Method
Preheat the oven to 200°C/400°F/gas 6. Boil the kettle. Scrub the potatoes, chop into 3cm chunks, place in a large shallow casserole pan and cover with boiling kettle water. Bring back to the boil and cook for 15 minutes, or until tender, trimming and adding the broccoli for the last 4 minutes. Drain, put the broccoli aside, return the spuds to the pan and mash well with the tartare sauce and ½ a tablespoon of olive oil, then season to perfection. Put back on a medium heat and use the back of a spoon to spread the mash across the base and sides of the pan. Drizzle with oil, then transfer to the oven to bake for 20 minutes, or until golden. Meanwhile, slice the salmon lengthways just under 1cm thick. Halve the cherry tomatoes. Finely chop the chives. Toss it all with the prawns, lemon juice and a pinch of sea salt and black pepper. When the mash is golden, arrange the blanched broccoli on top, then lay over the dressed salmon, prawns and tomatoes. Return to the oven for 10 minutes, or until the fish and prawns are cooked through.
Upside Down Fish Pie

1 kg potatoes
320 g sprouting broccoli
100 g tartare sauce
olive oil
400 g piece of salmon , skin off, pin-boned
320 g ripe mixed-colour cherry tomatoes
1 bunch of chives (20g)
165 g raw peeled king prawns
½ a lemon
Autumn Salmon & Squash Bowl
Ingredients
For the salad
1 cup quinoa cooked
3 cups roughly 2 bunches lacinato kale, washed and de-stemmed
2 tsp. olive oil
1 tsp. garlic powder
1 1/2 cup roasted butternut squash
1 1/2 cup roasted cauliflower
2 tbsp. avocado oil
Salt and pepper
1 apple chopped
1/3 cup crumbled feta cheese
1/3 pomegranate seeds
1/4 cup pumpkin seeds
1/4 cup pecan pieces
2 salmon filets
For the dressing & marinade
1/2 cup olive oil
2 tbsp. apple cider vinegar
Juice from 1 lemon
2 tbsp. honey syrup
4 tsp. Dijon mustard
Salt and pepper to taste
Method
Cook the quinoa according to package directions. Preheat the oven to 400F / 200C / Gas 6. Toss cubed butternut squash and cauliflower florets with avocado oil and season with salt and pepper. Roast on a baking sheet for approximately 15 minutes until the squash is fork tender. Let cool.
In a small bowl combine all of the ingredients for the dressing/marinade and whisk together. Use half as a marinade for the salmon (drizzle on each of the 2 filets) and the rest as salad dressing. Pour marinade on salmon. Bake at 400 degrees in the oven for about 10-12 minutes until opaque or grill on a grill pan on the stove for 3-4 minutes on each side.
Next, massage the washed and dried kale with olive oil and garlic powder for a few seconds. Toss roasted veggies with the kale. Add chopped apple, pomegranate seeds, pumpkin seeds, feta and pecans. Drizzle with remaining dressing and enjoy!
“Eat with the colours of the season with this recipe, it’s everything you love about autumn in one bowl”
Mini No-Bake Pumpkin Spice Cheesecakes
“Quick and easy to make, with a crunchy ginger cookie crust”
Method
Make the crust: Whisk together the cookie crumbs and brown sugar in a small mixing bowl. Stir the molasses into the melted butter, and then add the mixture to the cookie crumbs. Mix everything together until the mixture is damp and crumbly, like wet sand.
Line a standard 12-cup muffin tin with paper liners.
Scoop about 4 ½ -5 (loosely-packed) teaspoons of the crust mixture into each liner, pressing it down into a flat, compact layer; a cocktail muddler works particularly well for this. Chill in the refrigerator while prepping the filling.
Using a bowl and handheld electric mixer, or a stand mixer, beat the whipping cream on medium-high speed just until stiff. Chill in the refrigerator while you proceed with the next step. Using a clean
bowl/mixer, beat the softened cream cheese until smooth and creamy. Add the pumpkin purée, brown sugar, powdered sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, cloves, and salt and continue to beat on medium speed until smoothly and evenly combined. Use a rubber spatula to gently fold the whipped cream into the cream cheese mixture, continuing just until the two are evenly incorporated, with no streaks remaining.
Pipe or spoon the filling over the crust in each muffin liner, making sure it fills the liner completely with no gaps. Use a small offset spatula to smooth out the top surface of each cupcake. Transfer to the refrigerator to set for at least three hours before garnishing and serving.
Ingredients
4 ¼ oz whipping cream
10 oz full-fat cream cheese
5 ½ oz canned pumpkin purée
2 ⅜ oz brown sugar
2 ½ oz sugar
1 tbsp vanilla extract
1 ¼ tsp cinnamon
½ tsp ginger
⅜ tsp nutmeg
⅜ tsp cloves
Pinch of salt
Whipped cream
Caramel sauce

Fry’sFootieCorner
As I am writing this column, England have just played their final warm-up games ahead of the World Cup in Qatar and even though the tournament is just around the corner, I still can’t quite get my head around the fact that this competition is taking place in the middle of the domestic campaign and in a country with no real football experience.
It is certainly going to be a very different World Cup that is for sure. There has been an awful lot of talk about England and Gareth Southgate’s position as manager. I think that given what England have achieved during his tenure should mean that he gets a little bit more slack.
A semi-final and a final of a major tournament, regardless of the squad at your disposal, is still a pretty good achievement when you compare and contrast with previous manager’s efforts. Yes, of course, we need to go one better now, but I believe we have a great opportunity to do that with the players that we have.
It is just about finding the right balance. I think that Jude Bellingham has emerged as a potential starter in midfield and that is a bit of a problem position for us, while we know that there are challenges at centre back, however, when you look at the attacking options at our disposal, I am sure we can score more than the opposition – which was my mantra as a manager!
At Peterborough United, we have had a few players away on international duty. Ronnie Edwards played two out of the three games for England under 20s in Spain, while Joe Taylor made his first appearance for Wales under 21s. Both players were signed from Barnet and Kings Lynn respectively and I have always said there is plenty of talent, young and old, outside of the EFL. I think our transfer policy proves that.
Ronnie helped England under 19s win the European Championships in the summer and has taken the step-up into the under 20s in his stride. While Joe has scored plenty of goals for our under 21s and on his first appearance for his country, hit the post in a 90minute appearance and I know their management loved him.
I personally love it when players go away with their countries. It is a different environment, different opposition and they can only learn and improve from that experience. We have seen that first hand. Hopefully more of our players will get that opportunity moving forward.

TRAVEL
Fall in Love withVietnam This Autumn
Often recognised as one of the greatest fall destinations across the globe, visiting Vietnam in autumn should be on every traveller’s bucket list. During the autumn months, Hanoi becomes cooler, while the central coast and south continue to be warm, providing the perfect opportunity to explore a mix of bustling cultural hotspots, while also enjoying some relaxation on the stunning coastline. For those looking to book their next autumn getaway, here are some reasons why Vietnam makes the perfect autumn time destination.
The coastal climates are at their best, but you can still avoid the crowds
The coastal regions of Vietnam are second to none. From the picture perfect Ha Long Bay, to the golden sands of Phu Quoc, autumn provides the perfect occasion to lap up some sunshine and enjoy the serenity of the coast, while avoiding the crowds of peak season.
Sea lovers won’t want to miss a trip to Ha Long Bay, a world UNESCO site that features thousands of limestone karsts and isles in various shapes and sizes. It's easy to see why it’s one of the most popular destinations in Vietnam throughout the year, with autumn providing the ideal time to make the most of the views as a result of the seasonal cool and sunny climate.
Hội An, a coastal city located in Southeast Vietnam, boasts incredible history through its ancient Japanese houses and Chinese temples. Hội An is home to an attractive seafront area with a beautiful setting for restaurants and lively bars, where visitors can enjoy a variety of traditional cuisine in an idyllic setting. Boats can also be hired to explore the neighbouring areas, and during the autumn nights, visitors can buy lanterns and release them into the river, making for an unforgettable atmosphere.
It’s the perfect time of year to walk the streets of Vietnam’s bustling cities Vietnam is full of vibrant, eclectic cities, which are best discovered in the months when the air is a little cooler. Bustling streets and the famous trams making their way through narrow lanes are some of Vietnam's best loved sights. Around autumn time, the capital city of Hanoi is a sight that shouldn’t be missed. A visit in autumn can save guests from both the high temperatures in the summer and the colder winds of the winter. The old quarter is famous for its 36 iconic streets
named after the products sold by the residents, perfect for a leisurely stroll to take it all in. It’s also a great time of year to experience a bike or motorbike ride through the streets, watching the falling leaves of autumn and the changing colours.
Off-the-beaten-track adventure attractions are at their best
The Mekong Delta is a sight to behold all year round, but really comes into its own during the damper seasons which peak in October. Tourists visiting the Delta have the chance to travel by boat at this time of year instead of using cars and scooters, offering them the opportunity to capture stunning images of sunrises and sunsets across the waters, spotting wildlife in its natural habitat and watching locals cast their nets to cash in on the plentiful fish supply that migrates to the area. Boat rides through the mangroves, forests, floating markets and fruit orchards are the perfect way to experience this area from a whole new perspective and autumn is one of the only times of year when it’s possible to do so. Visitors can join the hundreds of little boats as they move their way through the Delta and experience this unique, natural landscape.
You can get there on a budget, with flights at their cheapest
For those looking to explore this beautiful country without breaking the bank, October and November are among the most affordable months to fly to Vietnam. Visitors begin to return to Vietnam after the rainy season around this time of year, but not yet in sufficient numbers to drive up the flight prices. For those who want to get away while avoiding the sky high prices of travel around school holidays and the Christmas period, autumn is the perfect time to visit Vietnam, making the most of the beautiful weather while rainy days and colder nights begin to draw to the UK.

We Heard it Through The Grapevine, The Commitments are Coming to Town
Itis 35 years since The Commitments first burst from the pages of Roddy Doyle’s best-selling novel. The world's hardest working and most explosive soul band are set to return in an all new stage production, kicking off a huge nine month tour that comes to Milton Keynes this month (24 - 29 October 2022).
This major UK and Ireland tour of the smash-hit musical will star Coronation Street legend Nigel Pivaro, who appeared in the hugely popular ITV soap between 1983 – 2012 as the lovable rogue Terry Duckworth. He will be swapping the cobbles for the stage and performing the role of ‘Da’ in this all-new production.
Nigel Pivaro says: “I am thrilled to be marking my return to the stage in this production of The Commitments. It's an iconic story that resonates across the years, about people who though distant from the music's origins find communion and expression in the Motown style. A musical genre which was borne out of oppression and which the characters embrace as their own. The Motown Sound is as vibrant today as it was when it first burst through in the Sixties.”
Roddy Doyle added: “I'm delighted that The Commitments are coming back in 2022 & 2023 and I'm particularly looking forward to seeing how Nigel Pivaro tackles the part of Jimmy Rabbitte's Da.”
This new tour for 2022/23 is directed by Andrew Linnie. Andrew made his West End debut in the original production in 2013, playing the role of Dean, the band’s sax player. He then went on to star in the lead role of Jimmy Rabitte in the 2016/2017 UK tour.
Joining the cast as Deco is Olivier Award nominee Ian McIntosh. Ian is no stranger to this role, having previously played Alternate Deco during the original West End run. Previous credits include Galileo in the UK tour of We Will Rock You, Sid Worley in An Officer and a Gentleman and he was Olivier nominated for ‘Best Supporting Actor in a Musical’ for his role as Barry in Beautiful – The Carole King Musical. His extensive musical career has also seen him perform in Hair and Can’t Buy Me Love.
In 2013 The Commitments musical opened in London’s West End to universal critical acclaim and enjoyed a record-breaking two-year residency at the Palace Theatre. After which, it hit the road for a major tour, invigorating audiences up and down the country throughout 2016 and 2017.
The Commitments musical has been adapted from the novel by Booker prize-winning author Roddy Doyle. Featuring an electric playlist, The Commitments showcases more than 20 soul classics performed live on stage, including Night Train, Try A Little
Tenderness, River Deep, Mountain High, In The Midnight Hour, Papa Was A Rolling Stone, Save Me, Mustang Sally, I Heard It Through The Grapevine, Thin Line Between Love and Hate, Reach Out, Uptight, Knock On Wood, I Can't Turn You Loose and many more!
It tells the story of Jimmy Rabbitte, a young working-class music fan, who transforms an unlikely bunch of amateur musicians into an amazing live act, which becomes the finest soul band Dublin has ever produced. Placing a classified advert in a music paper, Jimmy auditions a number of wannabes before finalising the members of his new band, which he names ‘The Commitments’.
Humour kicks in as the band get to know each other and
their instruments, grappling with inter-group differences as they muddle their way through early rehearsals for the band’s first gig. Just as they improve and begin to get a name for themselves, they combust. The backing singers are more interested in the middle-aged horn playing legend, the singer has entered Eurovision, the drummer has walked out mid-gig and the saxophone player has dangerous leanings towards a jazz career.
It's time to hop on the ‘night train’ and have a fabulously fun-filled night.
The Commitments plays at Milton Keynes Theatre from Monday 24th to Saturday 29th October. Tickets are available from www.atgtickets.com/MiltonKeynes
