While the time zones progress with the sun from east to west across the meridians of longitude, Montblanc’s latest creation also brings the north-south axis into play because the Montblanc TimeWalker WorldTime Hemispheres is available in a northern and a southern version. In the Northern Hemisphere model, a map of the Earth as seen from the north is featured together with the North Pole at its centre, while the Southern Hemisphere variant places the South Pole in the midpoint. Naturally, the Northern Hemisphere model consists solely of locations in the Northern hemisphere and its southern counterpart only reflects the names of places located south of the Equator. Tellingly, Montblanc has built corresponding adaptations into its mechanical movements that will work in harmony with the corresponding time displays in both models.

NORTH OR SOUTH – YOU DECIDE Both models have immobile rings around their dials marked with the 24 names of the respective places in the relevant hemisphere, but the 24-hour discs in the centres turn in opposite directions. For instance, the disc turns clockwise on the Northern Hemisphere watch and bears a 24-hour scale labelled anticlockwise. The Southern Hemisphere watch features the 24-hour disc which turns anticlockwise and bears a 24-hour scale labelled clockwise. These two TimeWalker World-Time Hemispheres models differ not only because of their different dials, but also because they are equipped with different movements, which are necessary to rotate the 24-hour discs of the two timepieces in the proper directions. IN THE ZONE To assure that the wearer can keep an eye on the entire planet, from east to west and from north to south, the Northern Hemisphere watch bears the southern place names on its case back and vice versa. This masterpiece features the unmistakable Montblanc TimeWalker design that which is very popular with men, and the indication of the time in a second zone. Thanks to the horological mastery of Montblanc, these two complications are combined effortlessly, resulting in a unique timepiece that is exceptionally useful in daily life. In order to achieve this union, the brand has implemented a rather unconventional manner with central positioning for both its elapsedseconds hand and its hand for sixty elapsed minutes. This arrangement was very popular forty years ago, but vanished into oblivion afterwards. However, even though it was difficult to understand why it was never used again afterwards, Montblanc has figured out this constellation improves the legibility of elapsed-time measurements and simultaneously frees space for a sub-dial with a 24-hour scale to show the time in a second zone. The 24-hour sub-dial is in the centre and can be adjusted to indicate the hour in any desired second time zone, although most users will probably choose to set it to show the time at their permanent residence. Its scale is calibrated for 24 hours, so it simultaneously provides day and night

information. This home time remains unchanged when you embark on a journey, while the display on the main display can be set to show the new local time. Therefore, the way this function is realised on the Montblanc TimeWalker Hemispheres enables it to be operated very simply and flexibly. LIGHTWEIGHT AND SOPHISTICATED Made from stainless steel and titanium, both the Northern Hemisphere and Southern Hemispheres models feel lighter than it looks. The bezel features brushed titanium while the case is in polished steel. A moderately flat case at 42mm means that this watch sits close to your wrist and feels very comfortable. Returning to their roots has allowed horological houses to demonstrate their conviction as well as to preserve and perpetuate fine watchmaking. As revered legends refresh themselves, it accords luxury names a degree of recognition. Vacheron Constantin is no exception. Once a male-oriented collection of tonneau-shaped watches, the Geneva-based high-tech horologer, Vacheron Constantin has set its sights on crafting exquisite timepieces for the fairer sex. With curvaceous designs, the Malte tourbillon boasts an invisible setting that is entirely hand-crafted and adorned in 418 baguette diamonds (totalling approximately 19.6 carats). HIDDEN ARTISTRY As a nod to its pedigree, the centrepiece of the Malte tourbillon high jewellery features tonneau paved diamonds. This exceptional piece is a vibrant dedication to the Métiers d’Art, which here border on the sublime. With the invisible settings all entirely hand-crafted, it is dressed in 418 baguette diamonds (totalling approximately 19.6 carats), creating a supreme illumination of time. supported by a track, they form a field of light without any trace of fastening and, as a result, emit maximum luminosity. Vacheron Constantin chose to apply this technique to a shaped watch which, despite its curved profile, has edges, sharp angles and taut lines, all of which made the work much more challenging. And to accomplish this, a whole range of craftsmen, from designer to gem-setter, from watchmaker to jeweller, worked in perfect harmony, orchestrating their respective skills and motivated by the same determination to surpass themselves. The cutter worked on the stones one by one, to the nearest micron, so that the jewel-setter was able to fit them perfectly into the place prepared for them. The rounding off of the tourbillon bar, which always represents a significant technical challenge, calls for over 12 hours of manual work in order to meet the finishing criteria demanded by Vacheron Constantin. Rounding off consists of filing each end of the arms in order to give them a conical or semi-cylindrical shape, while respecting the limits of the centre and the heels. To finalise this operation, the craftsmen rub it down with stones, buffs, wooden pegs and finishing pastes in order to achieve a perfectly polished effect. The exceptional character of the 2795 calibre is underscored by its c么tes de Gen猫ve decoration, meticulous hand-chamfering of the bar edges, and engraved individual serial number. HIGH OCTANE GLAMOUR The world of horology and motor racing has always been a harmonious marriage of exceptional craftsmanship, technological perfection and accuracy. On 12 September, Montblanc and AFFLUENT Media honoured this prestigious tradition by hosting a private cocktail soiree exclusively for Ferrari Owners Club of Singapore. Montblanc at Mandarin Gallery was the place to be that evening as guests’ respective supercars were valet parked right outside the glamorous boutique. Members were graciously greeted and enjoyed a first-hand preview of the exquisite Montblanc TimeWalker collection featuring Montblanc TimeWalker Hemispheres, Montblanc TimeWalker Twinfly and Montblanc Nicolas Rieussec Home Time, to name a few. Singapore’s first pop rock string quartet, Vox, having previously performed at the Singapore Grand Prix provided impeccable tunes for this intimate affair while attendees savoured a world travel-inspired menu of scrumptious canapés. This momentous event took place at Lladró’s boutique in Paragon Shopping Mall in Singapore with an exhibition showcasing this collection, held from 8-15 October 2013. LIGHT THE WAY Belle de Nuit, a new line of ceiling, tabletop and wall lamps, is made in porcelain and comes in various formats and colors in tune with happening trends in interiors and home décor. The concept for this new collection is based on the classic crystal chandelier, updating it not only in terms of the material used, but also changing the expressive language. This reinterpretation gives rise to contemporary lamps in different sizes and models which fit in to perfection with all kinds of interior styles, and in which porcelain and color play an important role. The sensation Lladró lamps transmit in comparison with those made in other materials is the greater sense of warmth. The inviting and comforting effect of porcelain is enhanced in this new collection with the use of porcelain lampshades, known as lithophanes, instead of the usual textile shades. When they are lit, the transparency of the porcelain brings out the

Powered by a 6.6-litre twin-turbo V12 engine, Wraith accelerates from rest to 100km/h in 4.6 seconds. MAGIC CARPET RIDE Compared with Rolls-Royce Ghost, the rear axle is 24 mm wider, the wheelbase is 183 mm shorter and the centre of gravity nearer the road thanks to a reduction in height of 50 mm.

New Group Executive Chef, Dan Segall, has beefed up Fat Cow’s menu with ingenious creations that will leave you mooing for more. Since its opening in 2011, Fat Cow has been one of the top steakhouses in Singapore for meat aficionados for their Wagyu beef executed with Japanese flavours. Recently, the restaurant has been elevated to even greener pastures thanks to its newly appointed Group Chef Dan Segall. Through my chat with Chef, a Boston native, I learnt that he mastered eating with chopsticks by the age of four, no doubt explains his Eastern inclined palate that has led him to being credited for opening the prestigious Zuma in Hong Kong, renowned M1NT in Shanghai and the ultra-hip Ku De Ta at Marina Bay Sands. SMALL DISHES, MASSIVE FLAVOURS The first appetiser, Momotaru ‘Sashimi’ Salad Japanese fruit tomato slices with mizura and ginger ponzu is a stunningly simple yet highly refreshing, the sweetness of the tomato was accentuated with the dressing for a zesty aftertaste. Next was the Maguro Shoyu-Zuke To Moromi Miso Tofu, soy-soaked tuna cubes sprinkled over delicate chunks of bean curd with fresh ginger juice and barley miso. Although the tuna was a tad soft for my liking, the softness of the tofu was balanced with crunchy sprouts and boded well with the distinct saltiness of barley miso.

“I want to focus on the use of top quality ingredients and precise cooking techniques to make delicious Japanese food,” Chef Segall’s dedication makes Fat Cow a cut above the rest. A BOUNTY OF BEEFY GOODNESS Japanese Wagyu beef remains the piece de resistance of the menu, and fans can look forward to the latest addition of Ohmi Grade A4 Ribeye and Iwate Grade A5 Ribeye. Begin the beef experience with the Wagyu No Sashimi To Sudachi Shio served cold and raw with sea salt at the side really made this a sublime treat for the taste buds as it was so buttery, with a hint of salty bite. A must-try is the Ohmi Grade A4 Ribeye, prepared Sumibiyaki style is a succulent hunk of steak grilled over Binchotan charcoal, served with sudachi and salt. Chef notes the Ohmi Waygu hails from the Shiga Prefecture and is the only viscous Waygu that melts at lower temperatures compared to others and is the choice meat for the Japanese Imperial family. Grilled to perfection, crisp and juicy, it was complemented with the Yuzu green chilli paste for that spicy kick and really hit the gastronomic spot! Passionate supercar owner Chia Boon Teck saw the good, the bad and the ugly side of running a commercial sports car club. Unsettled by the dealer’s commercial agenda, he founded the ExotiCars Club for the ultimate pursuit of adventure and camaraderie.

They say likeminded individuals are drawn to each other over shared interests. In this instance, Mr Chia’s predilection for fast cars led him to join one of the supercar brands in Singapore in 2007. Within a year, he observed that a car club that was tied to a car dealer does not bode well for the independence of the car club; and rather than trying to right the wrongs there, he founded his own supercars club instead. FAIR PLAY At the beginning in 2009, Mr Chia registered the ExotiCars Club with the Registry of Societies with 9 other fellow supercar owners. Today, the Club has grown to 160 members. A British trained lawyer, Mr Chia laid the foundations for a fair and just committee panel system that sees them holding their annual general meetings every March to elect new committee members. “We are always on the lookout for avid members to stand for election, to replace those incumbent committee members who may be burnt out.” His past experience drove him to be protective of his committee members. “We protect the wellbeing of our committee members jealously. They are all unpaid volunteers. Any member who abuses our committee members will be booted out of the club. We are very strict about this. If our committee members feel abused, they will step down from the committee because it is a lot of hard work for nothing in return except the camaraderie.”

DISCOVERY THROUGH DRIVING Members enjoy a host of exclusive privileges such as launches and invitations for luxury and performance cars, properties, watches, yachts and private jets, with the opportunity to travel frequently. The Club organises local drives, Malaysian turn-around drives, holiday drives to Malaysia, supercars driving courses in Malaysia, Australia, New Zealand, and Europe. The members’ profiles are typically top businessmen,

movers and shakers of their respective industries, and professionals including doctors and lawyers. “Our members appreciate that our Club offers them a world of exclusive privileges that they may not have access to in their individual capacity,” added Mr Chia. UNIQUE AND VARIED What really makes the ExotiCars Club stand out from the pack is that they admit a specified pedigree of sports cars including Aston Martin, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati, Mclaren and Porsche 911. Another notable factor is that they review and admit owners of other supercar models such as the Bentley GT, Koenigsegg, R8 and SLS on a case-by-case basis. Brand dealers’ clubs on the other hand would only comprise of cars from a single brand. THE FIRST STEP For admission into the ExotiCars Club, owning one of the cars listed above is the easy part. The owner must be recommended by an existing member. Then, the applicant must be accepted unanimously by the entire committee. All it takes is one objection for whatever reason and that applicant will be rejected. ExotiCars Club admission criteria are very strict so it is not by chance that the hand-picked members are a cohesive and harmonious lot. “We keep our ears to the ground for potential stirrers, trouble makers and prima donnas, and any sign of these characteristics will banish the application form into the rubbish bin. Membership is renewable annually by invitation only so any member falling foul of our ethos during the year will not be invited to renew his membership.”

DESTINED FOR GREATER HEIGHTS Bolstered by the success of his Club and the fact that it is growing from strength to strength and attracting more and more high-end vendors and establishments wanting to work with the ExotiCars Club, Mr Chia wants to take it to the next level. “We are self-funded and with so many vendors wanting to be featured at our events, our members are spoilt for choice with all kinds of wonderful exclusive events all year round. I have resisted having a website for the Club to protect the privacy of our members but I have recently succumbed to the persuasion of my committee members to have one for the members’ convenience. In this regard, one of our members donated $50k to the Club to set up and operate our website. I am very humbled by the trust, appreciation and generosity of our members.” Just recently, the Club collaborated with the Sarawak Supercars Club and Miri Supercar Owners Club and together, they are working with supercars owners in Sabah, Brunei and Kuala Lumpur to form their own Supercars clubs. “Once we establish this network of collaborations, the sky’s the limit for our future events. In the long term, I would like for our Club to own a holiday chalet or resort in Malaysia that our members could use.” Fuelled by his fervour for supercars and desire to share new thrilling driving and lifestyle experiences with fellow members, there is no doubt that with Mr Chia at the helm, the ExotiCars Club will continue to set pulses racing for the years to come. +

Menswear Johnny Manglani, founder of the UOMO Group had the foresight to set up a luxury menswear company in Russia. Today, we find out how he’s taking on the business world by storm.

Running a world leading international men’s fashion house takes a lot of pluck, energy and astute business acumen. And the man behind it, Johnny Manglani – has that in spades. The Bombay born entrepreneur, who was based in Moscow since 1983, now spends his time between Russia and Singapore as he is recently opened the first and biggest Brioni boutique at Marina Bay Sands.

ENTREPRENEURIAL SPIRIT He has built up a world class name for the company’s home brand, Uomo Collezioni with Stefano Ricci and Zilli as franchises. His first exposure in Hong Kong by working with fabrics and bespoke craftsmanship ignited his passion for fine tailoring, which led him to exploring business opportunities in high-end menswear. By bringing luxury Italian menswear to Russia in the beginning, Manglani struck gold when the financial boom led the truly affluent Russian craving for bespoke suits. His secret? Unerring focus and a little bit of luck goes a long way. In just a short span of time, by 1998, he had carved out a niche for himself by opening men’s luxury fashion boutiques in Moscow where a discerning clientele can shop in privacy and comfort just like the boutiques in London, Milan and Paris. The quality of its offerings and level of service was a hit with the business and political elites in Moscow. Today, Manglani has garnered huge success and International awards that even include an Italian Knighthood in 2010. As for the brand, Uomo Collezioni has won The World Fashion Award in the category of ‘Best Fashion Brand for Gentleman’ in 2009, Company of the Year for Quality and Service by RBC Channel (Russia’s equivalent of CNN) in 2007. But it is the Italian Knighthood that is his proudest achievement in life, as he shows me the pin on his collar lapel - he considers that an immense honour for a non-Italian like himself to receive this significant recognition. A NEW CHAPTER When he visited Singapore in August 2010, he saw the potential to open two luxury men’s fashion boutiques at the upmarket ‘The Shoppes’ at Marina Bay Sands. He revealed that he initially came to Singapore to

invest in real estate. “Although I wanted to invest in real estate, I am a retailer and thus, I continued to do so. In hindsight, it seems like it was an excellent decision, so I’m very happy with that.” For Manglani, he never regards challenges as stumbling blocks. Rather, he sees them as opportunities for improvement and solutions for success. With his philosophy of respecting another country’s culture and tradition, it has gone a long way, in part fuelled by his ambition. Here in Singapore, Manglani has introduced his multi-label emporium for men, which has evolved into a springboard for luxury labels that are new to the Asian region. Labels such as Zilli, Stefano Ricci and Santoni which first entered the Singapore market under the Uomo Collezioni umbrella, have now gained enough popularity to warrant standalone boutiques in Marina Bay Sands. Classic Italian tailoring house, Brioni was the first to be set up by Manglani here. “Success in Singapore and plans for Asia has given me new wings.” WELL SUITED Take it from the master himself, who dished out tips on what should be in every man’s wardrobe – such as a sports blazer, tailored jackets, suits and pants, even cufflinks. It is no surprise then that Manglani lives and breathe fashion as he gestures towards his personalised cuff links with his initials, right down to the exquisite buttons. Indeed, perfection is in the details and it is inspiring to know that an accomplished gentleman such as Maglani still takes the time and effort to know every aspect of his business and treats his staff with respect and motivation. The biggest gratification for him at the end of the day is when a customer tells him in person that they enjoyed the fine treatment and service at his boutiques. +
