A NOTE FROM

THE PUBLISHER I am proud that we have come this far, thanks to all your support. We have taken note that the number of affluent individuals in Asia, and in Singapore especially, have increased many folds in the last few years. Indeed, we have noticed a significant increase in the number of such individuals among our readers in the last 2 years. We are very encouraged by this increase and based on your feedback, we decided to update our contents to serve your needs and rests further. We note in particular, a common feedback that readers would like to explore the possibilities of using our publication to learn about one another, and get to know one another. In other words, the affluent want to network each other. Going forward then, we aim to reach out to even more affluent individuals from Singapore, South East Asia, and the rest of Asia. We aim to be The publication that links the affluent to one another all over this part of the world, which is arguably the most affluent today and many years to come. Our new contents include features on individuals at work, at play, at social events, and more. In the months ahead, readers who wish to share their stories of themselves at work, at play, or anything entrepreneurial, I would be most happy to hear from you at Paul@affluent-media.com. Our cover this issue features the four presidents of four Supercars clubs in Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Kuching, and Miri. A gathering of all their members’ Supercars, totaling about 250 and valued at about S$250 million, would be a fine example of the affluent networking and playing together. Fancy yourself making the cover of our next issue? Drop me a note and let’s discuss the possibility. Between now and then, we hope you enjoy this issue.

AFFLUENT timepieces

The Art Of Horological Mastery Blancpain’s mastery in the art of watchmaking is showcased in its exceptional timepieces that feature a series of technical feats.

THE VILLERET COLLECTION: AUTHENTICITY AND TRADITION Blancpain pays tribute to its underlying principle of giving absolute priority to authenticity and respect for tradition with its Villeret collection, named after the birthplace of the Manufacture. Its new self-winding three-hand watch with date display uses the Grand Feu enamel, a stable material that maintains its radiance indefinitely, for its dial. Using several successive layers of enamel fired at temperatures of over 1000°C, the dial and enamel-painted numerals undergo exacting processes. It is carefully examined and manually touched up after each operation, and finished with distinctive expertise. Depending on the light, the Grand Feu enamel dial reveals the tone-on-tone “JB” logo engraved between the numerals IV and V, VII and VIII, the secret signature with which enamellists historically initialled their works.

The Villeret

collection offers a new self-winding threehand watch with date display, that features a remarkably understated Grand Feu enamel dial.

35

Blancpain combines both

the tourbillon and the carrousel (karussel), two of the major devices aimed at reducing gravity-related effects on the running of the movement, in one timepiece.

The Villeret collection comes with red gold round double-stepped case and slightly hollowed sage leafshaped hands. It has a date display at 3 o’clock, as well as a central seconds hand with a sapphire crystal case-back that allows the full view of the delicate interplay of the decorative effects, featuring Côtes de Genève on the movement bridges and a honeycomb pattern on the oscillating weight.

by a differential gear system, which transmits the average rate of both regulators to the time display. An external winding crown enables both barrels to be wound simultaneously. This guarantees equal winding and provides impressive precision and a seven-day power reserve. The sapphire crystal caseback allows full view of this ingenious mechanism as well as the power-reserve indication. Unlike the tourbillion which has a carriage linked to the barrel via a single gear train, the carrousel is connected to the barrel by two gear trains: the first delivers the energy required for the operation of the escapement, while the second controls the carriage rotation speed. The elaborate construction involves more components for the carrousel and ensuring that both devices work smoothly is a world first achieved by the Blancpain watchmakers.

The mechanical self-winding timepiece with a new 42mm-diameter is fitted with a chocolate-toned alligator leather strap and powered by its in-house Calibre 1335, with an eight-day power reserve. TOURBILLON CARROUSEL: COMBINING TOURBILLON AND CARROUSEL Unrivalled watchmaking skills by Blancpain are shown in its timepiece, The Tourbillon Carrousel that offers an alternative to the tourbillon. It is a world’s first with an original combination of having the tourbillon and the carrousel (karussel), two major devices which reduce gravity-related effects on the running of the movement. This is the first time in horological history that Blancpain introduced a wristwatch that combines these two regulators, achieving a technical feat. Two of the brand’s emblematic complications — a flying tourbillon at 12 o’clock and a flying carrousel at 6 o’clock — are featured with a date display at 3 o’clock. EXCEPTIONAL TRIO: CARROUSEL, MINUTE REPEATER AND CHRONOGRAPH The peak in the art of watchmaking by Blancpain is exhibited when it became the first to associate two horological complications with a flyback chronograph in a self-winding version in the Carrousel, Minute Repeater and Chronograph. Adding to its series of world firsts in its Carrousel Volant and Carrousel Minute Repeater models, Blancpain offers this unusual threesome in the Le Brassus collection, distinguished — by a range of complications exclusive to the Manufacture. It is rare for watch brands to present such highly complex models and even rarer for those that develop these movements in-house. The carrousel (or karussel), an exceptional mechanism revived and revamped by Blancpain in 2008, is represented in this model by its famous one-minute flying carrousel.

Blancpain is the first to associate

two horological complications with a flyback chronograph in a self-winding version in the Carrousel, Minute Repeater and Chronograph.

The minute repeater used by Blancpain is the result of its extensive research on optimising the sound of its repeater mechanisms. The latest improvement to the purity of the sound is a flying governor that reduces the background noise produced by the movement while transmission of sound quality is optimized by fixing the gongs inside the case.

The third function, the chronograph, king of shorttime measurements, particularly with the flyback or instant-restart function, has been made extremely user friendly in the latest timepiece that is matched only by its inner complexity. This original version of an unusual arrangement featuring a 30-minute counter at the centre of the calibre showcases the horological mastery of the Blancpain movement design engineers. + Blancpain The Shoppes At Marina Bay Sands 2 Bayfront Avenue #B2-237 Singapore 018972 Tel: +65 6634 8771

AFFLUENT rocks

Established in 2001, the WORLD OF DIAMONDS has its

administrative office based in Antwerp and is one of the largest privately held diamond corporations in the world.

Besides designing and creating its own exclusive jewelry collections, the Group has become renowned for its wide array of diamonds crafted by master diamond artisans. Clients include established watchmakers and jewelers, top-end fashion houses and luxury automobile manufacturers. STATE OF THE ART TECHNOLOGY Selected under 63 parameters after a full examination and using laser technology, the Group’s diamonds are precisely cleaved and meticulously crafted by certified diamond cutters who have an intimate understanding of refractive indexes and critical angle data. Guided by the most innovative equipment along with invaluable expertise of distinguished artisans, the diamonds

are assembled into spectacular jewelry collections which feature timeless designs incorporating European sophistication with exotic influences combining its cut, color, clarity and carat. A CUT ABOVE THE REST Unlike many other manufacturers, the WORLD OF DIAMONDS prides on offering diamonds in a wide selection of shapes which undergo a laborious process using computer algorithms and in depth analysis by a dedicated team. Expert craftsmen work with master cutters to reveal the hidden potential of every stone. Diamonds are then painstakingly polished individually with state-of-the-art instruments impregnated with diamond dust to achieve optimum scintillation. Every one of them is graded by the Gemological Institute of America and issued with an accompanying certificate. The result is a diamond boasting excellent cut, polish and symmetry. COLORLESS, FANCY OR EXOTIC Color: Diamonds of remarkable transparency and fancy-colored diamonds that bear a deep saturation are the hallmarks of the Group. In addition to an unmatched selection of pure, colorless diamonds with a focus on D, E, and F colors, the WORLD OF DIAMONDS also offers fancy colored diamonds tailored to the most discerning clientele. Besides brown, yellow and pink diamonds which are more commonly available, the Group is one of the few diamond corporations which stock orange and green diamonds, known to be very scarce and highly prized. It also has the

most exotic colors including red and blue diamonds in its unrivaled collection of fancies. FLAWLESS Clarity: Because every diamond is born with its own, unique fingerprint, its clarity characteristic can be used to identify it. Most natural diamonds have some form of flaw such as trapped air bubbles, scratches, or other minerals that are part of the diamond so flawless diamonds are extremely rare and command top prices. At the WORLD OF DIAMONDS, only the finest diamonds bearing the most desirable clarity grades are offered. Its highly qualified diamond artisans ensure that a polished diamond would yield a clarity grade close to Flawless. More than 90 per cent of the Group’s selection of natural diamonds has been awarded top clarity grades by the Gemological Institute of America. BIG AND BIGGER Carat: The WORLD OF DIAMONDS offers polished, fancy colored diamonds and colorless diamonds that are over one-carat in weight. The bigger the diamond, the more valuable as it is less commonly found in nature and the probability of inclusions generally increases with the size. The Group offers a wide selection and its diamonds are as large as 186.39 carats. With impeccable cutting techniques and longstanding traditions of diamond manufacturing, all creations by the WORLD OF DIAMONDS are hand-crafted to charm discerning customers with special desires. HIGH SHINE

Barely there make-up looks may be au courant this season but nothing screams summer more than a lightly bronzed skin that’s paired with bright and nude accents. Here are some ways to look like you’ve spent some quality time under the sun.

49

BLUSHING BEAUTY While bronzers are great for defining your face to give you a more sculpted look, there’s no denying that a swoosh or two of the perfect shade of blush can add a feminine glow to your skin. But spring vivid shades may prove to be too loud for the Summer’s look du jour. The trick to make them look natural? Try blending the blush first before lightly dusting some bronzer over it.

1

TRY: 1. Stila Convertible Colour Dual Lip & Cheek Cream Shade Extensions in Lotus; 2. Burberry Light Glow in Tangerine Blush No. 6

2

1 IN THE PINK There’s a huge difference between raw beauty and giving the illusion of going au natural - The latter keeps you looking fresh throughout the day. For that healthy looking glow, apply face powders that provide an all-over natural shimmer on top of full-coverage concealers.

2

TRY: 1. Too Faced Sweetheart Beads Radiant Glow Face Powder; 2. Diorsnow White Reveal Pure Transparency Loose Powder SPF 15 PA++ in 001 Crystal Lilac; 3. Diorsnow Fresh Reveal Light-Reveal Colour Correcting Powder in 001 Crystal Rose; 4. Tarte Maracuja Waterproof Ceaseless Concealer in Light

PEEPER KEEPER Elevate your natural look for a nighttime soiree by going for deeper eyeshadow shades or mixing a few rich hues together for the perfect blend. Stick to a single wash of shimmery eyeshadow to avoid looking too severe.

When it comes to having the perfect skin, women spare no time and effort to find the best solution. With V10 Plus, that seemingly endless quest can now take a backseat. The popular Japanese skincare brand has developed a series of skin-saving serums that not only promises clear skin but also reduces the signs of aging. Research at V10 Plus shows that adequate hydration is key to having good skin. But aging causes a drop in hydration level and, by the time one reaches the age of 60, it drops to an alarming 30 per cent level. The brand’s new products - the Quasi serum as well as the Ceramide serum - promises to combat the problem. And just like all previous skincare products, the water-based serums do not contain paraben, artificial colouring or mineral oil. In fact, these skin solvers are made from natural plant extracts, leaving your skin looking revitalised.

55

V10 PLUS CERAMIDE SERUM The lack of ceramide, which are moisture-capturing molecules, causes a depression in the skin barrier. This leads to dryness as well as giving the skin an overall rough texture. The ceramide serum, made from vegetable ceramide that’s extracted from rice polishing, is a solution that combats this problem. The serum keeps moisture in the skin, giving you a more dewy and healthy complexion. It also protects your skin from the harmful ultraviolet rays. + V10 Plus is available at selected beauty retail outlets and salons. www.v10plus.co.jp

V10 PLUS QUASI SERUM Made from a combination of natural extracts, including plant, orange and lemon as well as sugar cane and sugar maple, the Quasi serum is great for defining a bright aura around the face. These intense extracts inhibits the formation of melanin and prevent tell-tale signs of aging, such as dark spots and freckles, to form on the skin. The moist texture also leads to brighter and more translucent skin.

Forever Young Pre-wedding jitters? Dr Kim Byung Gun from Seoul’s BK Plastic Surgery Hospital shares the benefits of Stem Cell Fat Graft to combat the signs of aging and having youthful-looking visage.

57

While there is no

way to stop aging, we can delay the process by using the best technology

So your flowers have been ordered, the invitation cards have been sent out and the custom-made bridal couture is flying in from Paris. If there’s one more thing you need to complete the wedding preparations, it is to attain radiant skin.

WHAT IS MEDIPOST STEM CELL GRAFT? To perform stem cell enhanced fat transfers, the fat is first extracted right here at BK Plastic Surgery Hospital under local anesthesia with IV sedation. This is done through the use of our Advanced Liposuction techniques. This fat is then placed into a centrifuge to isolate the stem cells, which are then concentrated with a special process by MEDIPOST. BK Plastic Surgery Hospital endeavors to raise the quality of stem cell-enriched fat graft procedure by affiliating with the frontrunner in stem cell technology and regenerative medicine, called MEDIPOST. Together with MEDIPOST, we run a stem cell laboratory in the hospital. + BK Plastic Surgery Hospital BK Building, 106, Dosan-daero, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, Korea Tel: +82-10 5021 8886 www.bkhospital.com

Every bride wants to have the best skin on the big day – One that is firm and has great elasticity. To achieve this, we suggest going for a stem cell fat graft procedure that guarantees a more radiant and youthful-looking skin. While there is no way to stop aging, we can delay the process by using the best technology. However, before making any decisions, I suggest that all patients have enough consultation time with the surgeon so as to choose the right method and the right technology.

DELAY AGING WITH STEM CELL FAT GRAFT PROCEDURE! Recently, it is a very common trend amongst women to marry younger men. Understandably, many are concerned over the condition of their skin especially on the day of the nuptials. For couples with a big age gap, stem cell fat graft is the perfect answer. While having consultation with patients, a big ratio of women actually request for a surgery that makes their face youthful.

MEDIPOST STEM CELL GRAFT PROCEDURE STEPS 1) Harvesting unwanted fat from abdomen, hip, or thigh 2) Separating harvested fat into pure fat cell and stem cells 3) Grafting pure fat cell and stem cell together into desired areas

Usually, Asian face has little bit of volume around the forehead and also high cheekbones. As they age, however, their skin looses its firmness and the entire volume around the face gets diminished eventually. This is where the stem cell graft comes in as a solution.

More Than Skin Deep Power couple Adren How and Jermaine Teo share the unique story behind the success of ONLY Group, a home-grown aesthetics provider that has developed remarkably over the years.

Adren How and Jermaine Teo, founders of local multi-award winning medical aesthetics group ONLY, do not believe in hard-selling when it comes to business. Even with the recent mushrooming of beauty clinics, salons and spas in Singapore, their staff are highly discouraged from aggressively promoting the brand’s services to keep up with the competition.

“Instead of hard-selling, we build our business in the way we want to be treated: with integrity and honesty. Our first and foremost priority is helping our clients, and delivering on our promises to them.” THE ONLY STORY The pair have been married for 14 years, and have come a long way since they established The ONLY Group in 2005 and opened their very first outlet at Holland Village in August 2006. “When we first started out, it was a virtually unknown industry where ‘aesthetics’ meant either dermatology or beauty salons. Aesthetic clinics,

Above Since 2007, Jermaine Teo and Adren How have been at the forefront of the beauty and medical aesthetics industry with ONLY Aesthetics. Below Adren How, 39, Chief Executive and founder of the ONLY Group.

The ONLY Group is due to launch their first regional outlet in Jakarta, Indonesia at the end of 2014.

doctors, technology and products were generally unheard of in any beauty business. Hence, it was a challenge to overcome the social stigma and safety concerns related to aesthetic technology.”

Sports recovery and pain management is now also part of ONLY’s portfolio, partering prominent institutions in the local sports industry such as S. League Champions (Tampines Rovers) and ONE Fighting Championship (ONE FC). Their concept store, Absolute Zero at Pacific Plaza, was the first in Asia to offer Whole Body Cryotherapy services, a medical treatment using cold liquid nitrogen to counter pains pains and induce recovery.

It was during this time that ONLY Aesthetics made its foray with the local industry’s first painless hair removal technology, known as intense pulsed light (IPL) hair removal today, which became an instant hit among the market. Riding on this intial success, the Group then went on to introduce more groundbreaking treatments and technologies to consumers, including needleless mesotherapy and teeth whitening. A BEAUTIFUL EVOLUTION Working together with the world’s top medical aesthetic manufacturers on an international level, Jermaine and Adren have since grown ONLY Aesthetics to a total of five prime locations in Singapore: Dhoby Ghaut, Raffles Place, Holland Village, and its latest being the 1,600 square foot O Medical Clinic that recently opened in May. Located on the fifth floor of Wheelock Place, O Medical Clinic is the first and only to offer SMASLift™, a non-surgical treatment using high-intensity focused ultrasound technology from Korea to contour, sculpt and rejuvenate skin.

SET TO SOAR There is no doubt that the brand, with its state-of-the-art technologies and pioneering treatments, has been widely and well received. Aside from numerous aesthetics and beauty related awards from leading publications in Singapore, it notably cinched the ‘Singapore Outstanding Enterprise’ and ‘100 MostLoved Beauty Professionals’ awards, both in 2011, as well as the ‘Most Promising SME’ award last year in 2013. Despite all that Jermaine and Adren have achieved, they keep their ambitions firmly rooted on the ground. “We take things a day at a time, and our plans are always changing. We do believe, however, that ONLY will be a household name in Singapore when it comes to aesthetics within the next few years.” Adds Adren, “Life is about winning some and losing some, but with Jesus, we win what truly matters.” + www.onlyaesthetics.sg

“With the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) working closely with the healthcare and travel sectors to position Singapore as an advanced medical care destination, there is an increase in the number of foreigners seeking healthcare services in Singapore. A Lifetime of Smiles DR CHENG ENG WAH, founder and principal surgeon of iDental Surgeons, takes pride in embracing the latest technologies that have revolutionised the practice of dentistry.

Dr Cheng Eng Wah has always known that he is good with his hands and has found his perfect calling. He is the founder and principal surgeon of iDental Surgeons, a dental practice that is dedicated to providing premium patient care services using the latest in dental laser and treatment technology. Launched 23 years ago, the group delivers dental services to more than 10,000 patients and brings together the expertise and experience of a dedicated team of 30 dentists and nurses operating in five clinics.

“I love what I am doing. I enjoy doing braces and making people look better and smile better,” shares Dr Cheng. “I will constantly think of ways to improve the treatment plan for the patient and I take lots of courses to keep myself updated to the latest development in braces treatment. It’s just like a hobby to me.” Dr Cheng became a dentist in 1986 at age 23. He has been described by those close to him as a workaholic who keeps himself well informed with new developments in dentistry. He takes courses regularly to keep himself updated. Today iDental Surgeons complements the expertise of its doctors with investments in the most advanced technologies that are integrated into daily dental treatments for patients. It is also the first clinic in Singapore to offer the technologically advanced LiteTouch™ laser treatment, a minimal invasive procedure that has revolutionised the practice of dentistry. He explains, “It reduces the need for anaesthesia during procedures, preserving sound tooth structure while removing decay, preventing bacterial contamination by killing germs, and protecting teeth against recurrent decay, ensuring less discomfort during and post treatment. Thorough assessments of dental problems such as worn-out, defective fillings, fractured teeth, decay, and bleeding gums are done with the aid of intraoral cameras.” Dr Cheng also takes pride that the clinic uses DIAOGNOdent, one of the newest technologies, which is a painless, no-radiation technique that is able to detect hidden decay that could easily be missed with just a visual examination.

63

With a special interest in orthodontics, Dr Cheng who is a member of the Royal College of Surgeons in the United Kingdom and a member of the American Orthodontic Society, is an accredited Invisalign dentist with Invisalign Platinum Elite Provider status since 2009. “I have been doing braces for more than 20 years. I was excited when I was first introduced to Invisalign as it is able to overcome a lot of short fall of braces. These include difficulty in maintaining good dental hygiene as braces trap food, more carries and gum diseases, more pain and ulcers. Patients also come in on emergency visits with braces coming loose or wire poking the cheek. For many adult patient, braces are too“ugly”.

was on. Dr Cheng was much influenced by Bruce Lee and he loved Chinese martial arts comic books. However, he admits that he is afraid of the dark and scared of “ghosts”. Dr Cheng who is an avid collector of Peranakan antiques, is married and has three children aged 11, 13 and 15. A doting father, he makes it a point to spend his weekends with his wife and children and enjoys sharing his “Kampong” experiences. He would take his family to catch “longkang” fish, catch all kinds of sea creatures at low tides, and cycle in Pulau Ubin. He has since been appointed by Align Technologies as its Invisalign Key Opinion Leader for Asia Pacific. This year, Dr Cheng was awarded the honour of running the first Invisalign flagship store in Singapore. It seems that Dr Cheng is not only good with his hands but also good with his legs, which explains his athleticism - he was a competitive long jumper, canoeist, windsurfer, and sailor as a young man. He grew up with three brothers in the 1960s and 1970s in Prinsep Street catching “longkang” fish and watching “Ultraman”. A DREAM JOURNEY Steve Odell, president for Europe, Africa, Middle East & Asia Pacific of Silversea Cruises, who was in Singapore to launch the 120-guest Silver Discoverer, shares why his work has been addictive.

Steve Odell

The christening of the Silver Discover, the third ship joining the Silversea Expeditions fleet in Singapore was the first to take place at Singapore’s new Marina Bay Cruise Centre. Silversea’s President EMEA & Asia Pacific since 2012, Steve Odell has been in the cruise industry for about 30 years. He joined leading ultra-luxury cruise operator Silversea, renowned for its prestigious ships and exotic locations, in 1998 and has seen the industry grow from small and unsophisticated to its maturity offering great diversity and choices for travelers. “The Silversea Expeditions has opened to travelers the most exciting and remote places in the world. I am staggered by the explosion of opportunities in this part of the world. If I can have a wish, it is for the company to expand its business further and faster because we are just scratching the surface of its potential,” he said.

Since its launch in 2008, Silversea Expeditions has established itself as the world’s leading, ultra-luxury expedition cruise line that has enabled guests to view extraordinary scenery; get closer to marine life and wildlife; as well as viewing first hand some of the world’s last wildernesses in a manner that is sympathetic to the environment. All this is offered aboard authentic expedition ships with some of the world’s leading expedition experts. “It is an easy concept to sell. It is addictive. My work gives me high level of satisfaction and the most enjoyable part of my work is meeting the customers face to face.” Steve, who has served as chairman of the International Cruise Council of Australasia between 2005 & 2007, and has held board positions with the UK’s Passenger Shipping Association and the Asia Cruise Association, cites some challenges in the industry -- they include overcoming the stigma of the cruise industry. “It is making travelers understand what it means – that it is secure, easy, great value for money and opening people’s minds. As a leader in the industry, we must continue to be good at innovation and deliver the variety and choices to travelers while ensuring the safety and security of our customers and checking that our operations are sensitive to environmental issues. Most importantly, we must do what we say and show that we are trustworthy.”

THE PERFECT JOURNEY Conrad Combrink, director of Expedition Planning and Strategic Development was given the responsibility for creating and coordinating many of the important aspects of the newly created Silversea Expeditions cruise programme.

Conrad Combrink

SILVER DISCOVERER The Silver Discover consists of five suite categories with facilities onboard that include 12 Zodiac boats and a glass-bottom boat for unique exploration of marine life; a swimming pool; a gym and beauty salon; a restaurant and pool grill; a lecture room for indepth stories and briefings about the destinations and a panoramic lounge. She weighs 5,218 tonnes, is 338 feet long and 51 feet wide.

The Silver Discoverer enables guests to explore remote areas of Micronesia, Melanesia, Polynesia in addition to the Russian Far East, Southeast Asia, New Zealand and Australia, including one of its hidden treasures, the Kimberley. This vast area in North West Australia is just slightly smaller than Thailand and about 500 times the size of Singapore. To get the most of a journey on the Silver Discover, Conrad suggested, “Read about the destination because the Expedition is all about the destination that is delivered very differently. Do as much as possible – for example for this cruise, witness the spectacular tidal change at Montgomery Reef, view King George’s towering twin falls plunging over 551 feet and experience the sheer vastness of Mitchell Falls from a helicopter. It is ideal for the adventurer at heart with the desire to explore. We create memories and here is where dreams become reality.” + Details of Silver Discover’s 2014 voyages are available at www.silversea.com Follow Silversea on Twitter, Facebook and the Silversea Blog.

Once the home of the Khmer empire, Cambodia is well loved by travellers for its sites of historical and cultural grandeur, one of which is embodied in the architectural gem that is Heritage Suites Hotel. Being the only Relais & Châteaux hotel in the country, this disarming retreat is set amidst an idyllic village and stands out among Siem Reap’s top boutique properties.

Sink into the comforts of contemporary life, found within an oasis of old colonial glamour.

TRADITION MEETS MODERNITY Despite its classic façade of whitewashed walls, dark woods and stone elements, Heritage Suites Hotel is anything but rustic. The exclusive abode offers 26 rooms, each boasting its own distinctive touch of luxe aside from private courtyards, majestic floor-to-ceiling windows and alfresco showers amidst the lushness of nature.

Every corner of Heritage Suites Hotel unveils a serendipitous encounter, with its spacious lobby and rooms transformed into exciting art exhibitions that are never duplicated. Designer pebbles are raked into shapes against perfectly manicured lawns, and baths can be taken in a stone tub right inside your very room. Guests will be enchanted by the soft light cast by four-foot paper lanterns against the high ceilings, lacquered sofas and Indochina prints within their quarters. AT THE HEART OF DISCOVERY This sumptuous sanctuary is just minutes away from the scenic Siem Reap River, the quaint and beloved Old Market (Psah Chas), and the fairly new National Museum – amongst other itinerary essentials that make for an authentic Angkor experience.

Time-Honoured Pleasures Heritage Suites Hotel is a member of the Relais & Châteaux group, an association of nearly 520 outstanding hotels and their independent owners, maître de maison, grand chefs and chefs. It offers guests the opportunity to enjoy the art of living and build their own treasure trove of living memories over all five continents. Established in France in 1954, the Relais & Châteaux signature reflects its ambition: “All around the world, unique in the world.”

A Piece of Heaven

in Bhutan – Dhensa Punakha Join me, KWOK LEONG, on a journey of discovery to Bhutan, in search of the heavenly abode called Dhensa Punakha.

HELLO BHUTAN! It was my first ever trip to Bhutan, flying Druk Airways. Known as the land of the thunder dragon, Bhutan is also the kingdom of happiness where the Gross National Happiness index is the highest in Asia. A simple request for a window seat had earned me a rare opportunity for a bird’s eye view of the great River Ganges and the spectacular Himalayan mountain range, which is home to the world’s highest peaks of Mount Everest. THE JOURNEY The fresh mountain air and tranquil atmosphere at Paro International Airport was such a far cry from the city life I used to know. Conversant in good English, Mr.

Norbu, my Bhutanese tour guide brought out the excitement in me with the prospect of a journey full of discovery throughout my trip. From Paro, we continued our journey to the capital of Bhutan, Thimpu, for a lunch break. Along the way, we passed by an adventurous iron chain bridge across the Paro Chu River, which was built 800 hundred years ago. Lunch was authentic Bhutanese cuisine, comprising of many side dishes with very unique combination of flavours. Traversing the mountains in the sub-alpine landscape offered me a glimpse of the very beautiful Magnolia and Rhododendron

flowers, the Himalayan Pine trees with elongated cones, and other rare plants thriving in the wild. The winding road ascended to the highest altitude at Dochula, home to the historic 108 stupas on a backdrop of the mighty Himalaya mountain range; and gradually descended to a subtropical landscape throughout our journey to the royal winter capital of Punakha Valley. DHENSA PHUNAKA BOUTIQUE RESORT After several hours of scenic drive around the perimeter of the beautiful mountains, we finally arrived at Dhensa Punakha Boutique Resort. “Dhensa” literally means “heavenly abode” in the national language of Bhutan, “Dzhongkha”. Staggered on the slopes of the pine forest, the resort has a double-ceiling reception area with an upstairs library and an outdoor lounge; six cottages comprising twenty four private suites, a restaurant with indoor and alfresco dining area, and a spa further down the slope; all overlooking the beautiful Punakha Valley. MY PRIVATE SUITE There are only four private suites in a double-storey cottage, two on each floor, all are corner units. A broad staircase led up to my suite on the first floor; and my first impression of the room was space and luxury. The wingchair at a corner was perfect for reading my favourite book, while I indulged on the free snacks and drinks from the well-stocked mini bar. Against

lungful of fresh mountain air – there is no better way to soak up the Bhutanese goodness than staying in ultra-modern comfort in such a pristine setting.

the wall was a super cozy bed with fluffy pillows, facing an LCD TV that offered international channels and feature movies. Hi-speed wifi was also available. The bathroom was equally luxurious with a standalone bathtub as the centerpiece, accentuated by quality amenities, an oversized shower head, ironing facilities and a safe in the wardrobe. My favourite spot was the private lounge at the balcony, divided from the room by a floor to ceiling glass panels. The balcony offered a panoramic view of the beautiful valley and the surrounding nature. Each morning, I would anticipate for the sun to emerge gingerly from behind the majestic mountain range. Admiring the picturesque sunrise, native-bird watching and inhaling a lungful of fresh mountain air – there is no better way to soak up the Bhutanese goodness than staying in ultra-modern comfort in such a pristine setting.

ROOM SERVICE Room service was top notch. Each time I went out for an excursion or dinner, I came back to my room and realized everything was back in order again; the bed sheet was tidied up, snacks and drinks were replenished. IMAGES AND TEXT BY KWOK LEONG NG

A staff brought it to me and it took him almost fifteen minutes to drape me up in the knee-length robe of vibrant colours, tied to the waist by a cloth belt. Wearing the elaborate but elegant costume is compulsory for Bhutanese men attending formal occasions.

RESTAURANT The restaurant served buffet style meals. Breakfast was mainly continental, while lunch and dinner were a combination of contemporary cuisine and traditional Asian favourites. The chef was said to use only the freshest organic produce from local farmers in their kitchen. Worth mentioning was the indulgent toasted butter cupcakes during breakfast; and the delicious meat curry that was flavourful but not overwhelmingly rich or spicy. Indoor and alfresco dining options were available. SPA The dedicated spa cottage offered exceptional treatments and therapies using Dhensa’s very own hand-blended essential oils. My full body massage session was complemented with the tranquil ambience of the surrounding forest, perfect for rejuvenating my mind, body and soul. INTRODUCTION TO TRADITIONAL COSTUME On my second day, I was introduced to the traditional Bhutanese costume for men, “Gho”, in the comfort of my own suite.

PUNAKHA ATTRACTIONS A short trip down the valley to Punakha town allowed me to explore the locals’ way of life; the things they sell in the shops, the menu in the restaurant, and the variety of fresh local produce at the roadside market. There were even night clubs, dance floors and karaoke for the community to socialise after working hours. Punakha Valley is also home to many places of interest in Bhutan. The most majestic of all was the Punakha Dzong, which was the second oldest and second largest dzong in Bhutan. We crossed Bhutan’s longest suspension footbridge to get to the dzong, which looked enormous even from afar. The whitewashed exterior was highlighted with orange lining and delightfully embellished with intricately carved wooden window frames in vivid colours. A visit to the legendary Chimi Lhakhang monastery is a must in Punakha. Strolling through the serene paddy fields to get there, I was instantly captivated by the innocent and happy rural lifestyle of the local villagers. Drawing visitors around the globe every day, Chimi Lhakhang bears a very amusing history about the “Divine Madman” who advocated the use of phallus symbols to ward off evil. It comes as no surprise that many Bhutanese buildings have an imaginative phallus symbol painted on the exterior wall!

The low density of

Dhensa Punakha offered me a discreet sanctuary to reacquaint Just a five-minute trek up behind Dhensa Phunaka was the peaceful Sangchhen Dorji Lhuendrup Lhakhang Nunnery which houses one of the largest bronze statues of Bodhisattva in Bhutan. The Bhuddist lodge together with the beautiful white and gold stupa stood on a windy mountain plateau, offering a sweeping view of the river and surrounding valleys. PICNIC IN STYLE The picnic lunch was the most original outdoor activity in my itinerary. About ten minutes’ drive up the mountain behind Dhensa Punakha, the dedicated resort staff laid the picnic ground in the unspoiled forest. I had a great time enjoying the mountain breeze, collecting pine cones, while binging on the sumptuous sandwich of rare tuna slices, caramelized onions with a subtle taste of crushed capers and balsamic vinegar, freshly prepared by Chef Andi. Making a toast to Mr. Baljit with a glass of chilled local beer, we chatted about topics that brought back the happy days of innocence. FAREWELL TO DHENSA PUNAKHA My trip to Bhutan was both adventurous and unforgettable. The unusual itinerary, complemented with the luxury stay at Dhensa Punakha, I had the time of my life. The low density of Dhensa Punakha offered me a discreet sanctuary to reacquaint myself, retreating from the crowd into a pure haven of relaxation, rejuvenation and inspiration. I would highly recommend it to all discerning travellers who yearn for privacy, luxury and authenticity in their travel escapade. + For more information on Dhensa Boutique Resorts, please log on to www.dhensa.com

REFLECTIONS

by Chia Boon Teck

GOD HELPS THOSE WHO HELP THEMSELVES - Benjamin Franklin I was born in the 1960s and grew up in the 1970s, watching my father toil to put food on the table. Armed with only a primary six education, my father slogged day and night at his humble electrical switchboards business. Hardworking, hand-to-mouth, not business savvy, knew little about investments, and didn’t believe in insurance. He passed away unexpectedly at the young age of 65 in the late 1980s when property prices were at rock bottom. His passing hit me bad as I was very close to him. Regrettably, my mother sold away our 15,000 square feet bungalow home in the Dunearn Road area for a mere S$1.35m. Shortly after that, its value shot up to S$10m. Oh well, Que Sera Sera. My inheritance from my father’s estate was a little over $100k. I spent the entire sum pursuing a 3-year law degree in the United Kingdom. I worked part time as a waiter in a Chinese restaurant whenever I could to subsidize my education. I returned to Singapore penniless, armed with a law degree, and started out from the bottom of the ladder in law firm Lee & Lee. Two decades and several law firms later, I remain self reliant from the time I served my National Service in the Commandos to now. Never was there a period in my life when I wondered what the government could do for me, or God forbid, fantasized about the affluent in society owing me a living. In the first four decades of my life from the 1960s to the 2000s, we were all inculcated with the ideal of meritocracy and self-reliance. My idol Mr Lee Kuan Yew said in 1984:“When people get equal handouts, whether or not they work harder or better, everybody then works less hard. The country must go down. It is when people are encouraged to excel by being able to keep a large part of the extra reward earned by the extra efforts that the society as a whole becomes wealthier and everyone thrives and prospers.” Abraham Lincoln once said “You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong. You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift. You cannot help the wage-earner by pulling down the wage-payer.” In 2008, Bill Gates announced his intention of giving away a large chunk of his fortune. Then in 2011, Warren Buffet created a stir when he pleaded with the US government to impose higher taxes on the rich. “AHA!” cried some people who took the chance to jump on the band wagon. “It’s time to tax the rich more”; “Make them give back to society”; “Redistribute their wealth”; “Close the income gap”; “Impose Robin Hood tax”; they cried to the government. Bill Gates is worth US$76b and Warren Buffet US$58b. Their personal wealth surpasses that of many Nations. However much they give away, they would still have enough left to feed their next few generations amply. Let’s not use them as examples and an excuse to milk our wage-payers who are nowhere near that league. Let our wage-payers keep their extra reward earned by their extra efforts. Let’s not move the goal posts of meritocracy and self-reliance. Let’s not be envious of the better-off in society. Let’s not ask them for hand-outs. Let’s not rob them. Let them give back to society on their own terms. Nobody owes us a living. Let’s not live off others. Let’s work hard ourselves. Let’s have some pride. Let’s have some dignity. And after we have done our best for ourselves, Que Sera Sera. For God helps those who help themselves.

THE WOLF IS LOOSE Bentley unleashes an elegant beast with a heart for motor sport. The aforementioned animal Bentley unleashes upon both the sporting and luxury automotive worlds cannot be understated. The new ‘S’ models expand the range of the fabled car brand’s Continental GT range, injecting it with an edgy allure as well as a ferocious bite, no less. Sporting Bentley’s signature engine growl nevertheless, the Continental V8 S model challenges the modern state of sporting agility, while boasting impressive stability thanks to a lowered and meticulously re-engineered chassis. Available as both a convertible and as a coupe, the luxurious grand tourer is nothing less than an exhilarating experience that devours the open road with ease. This handcrafted stunner by the century-old artisan from Crewe, England, in true Bentley spirit, is customisable to its owner’s every whim. Amongst a selection

of 17 colour coats are Kingfisher Blue and Monaco Yellow, which are unmistakable signature hues of the storied manufacturer. Just recently debuted at the IAA motor show in September of 2013, its sports exhaust option features re-tuned mountings and redesigned silencers, while the optional Mulliner Driving Specification package includes a jewel fuel filler cap, 21inch seven-spoke Black Limited Edition alloy wheels and drilled alloy foot pedals. Fancy your cabin trimmed in diamondquilted, perforated leather with indented headlining? This glorious package also entails your ride being tailored with Mulliner dark-tint front and rear lights as well as majestic Beluga gloss door mirrors to match the lower Body Styling Specification. Bentley’s impressive twin-turbo V8 engine churns out a 521bhp and 680Nm of torque. This state-of-the-art system easily achieves a range of more than 500 miles on a single tank, working in tandem with its potent 4-litre power train. The convertible sprints

from zero to 100km/h in 4.7s, while its coupe variant achieves 100km/h in a mere 4.5s. Both brandish a top speed of almost 310km/h, which is much more than anyone would expect from a luxury steed. The fuel economy of the Continental V8 S is 10.6 litres per 100 kilometre and its carbon dioxide emissions are minimised to a low 246g/km. Furthermore, four of its eight cylinders go into standby when the car is in cruising mode, saving much fuel along with the environment, whilst ready to be fired up in a flash anytime. Amid the fury of this epitomy of power, Continuous Damping Control (CDC) technology has bumps and rattles under control, ensuring a smooth journey above the expectations of modern luxury. + Bentley Singapore Wearnes Automotive Pte Ltd 45 Leng Kee Road Singapore 159103 Tel: +65 6378 2628 Email: bentley.sales@wearnes.com

LIFE ON THE FAST TRACK Owner of Moo Bar & Grill RAYMOND LIM who has been helping start ups in the F&B industry has found a new thrill in the fast tracks. Raymond Lim, owner of Moo Bar & Grill at McCallum St, seems to have the Midas Touch in the F&B business. Success in his ventures has made him a guru of some sort as he has been approached by many people asking for advice on the F&B business. Today, Raymond offers his expertise on a consultancy basis to help new F&B start-ups as well as establishment of partnerships and ventures. It all started back in 2000 when Raymond opened CAESARS wine & oysters bar in Liang Seah Street with the support of his father. It became an instant hit and remained healthily profitable for some thirteen years.

Soon, Raymond was looking for new challenges as he felt that there was no creativity in the drinks business. “A beer is a beer,” observed Raymond. “No one comes up to you and say hey your beer is very nice”. In 2006, he opened Shanghai Jazz beside Raffles Hotel at Seah Street and became the first in the industry to combine dim sum and wine in Shanghai Jazz. This too, proved to be popular and profitable. Five years later, Raymond took a big gamble and opened Moo Bar & Grill at McCallum Street. His half a million dollars investment in setting up Moo Bar & Grill

profiles of all these people, their humility and brother-next-door demeanor are very humbling. The networking opportunities in this Club are priceless and not replicated in any other social clubs in Singapore.”

Interestingly, Raymond’s love for good food and fine wines was first cultivated from his four years with Singapore Airlines as a member of the cabin crew. Fresh from the end of his National Service in the Navy in 1995, Raymond joined the airlines as a flight steward.

Raymond participated in his first Malaysian drive with the ExotiCars Club in February this year and that experience was “mind blowing”. He recalls, “Together with three other supercars clubs from Kuching, Miri and Kuala Lumpur, we had 50 supercars touring from Singapore – Kuala Lumpur Cameron Highlands- Kuantan - Singapore over five days escorted by six outriders. We were escorted and treated like Royalties. The feel-good factor was super addictive and the camaraderie of all the participants was out of this world.”

He married an SIA stewardess but since the airline could not allow Raymond to fly on the same flight with his spouse, the love struck couple resigned together and he decided to strike out on his own. Despite his success, Raymond is renowned among his friends to be fun loving and someone who lives his life to the fullest. A fan of fast cars, the father of three teenaged children recalls that he first started with Alfa Romeo and then, BMWs and Maserati. He currently drives a Lamborghini Superleggera. He enjoys activities that involve mostly his Maserati and Lamborghini and as a member of ExotiCars Club, he enjoys its activities and also looks forward to hanging out with his many fellow club members who have become good friends.

The Club has since lined up several more overseas trips for its members throughout the year and Raymond has vowed that he “would not miss them for the world”. In fact, Raymond was so impressed by how well-run the ExotiCars Club that he volunteered to join its committee and was recently elected into the committee at its annual general meeting. Raymond enthused, “It’s such an honour to be working alongside this group of established professionals and businessmen.” +

ONE LOVE A pledge of allegiance that sprung from a common affinity for splendid machines.

Like many friendships, the unification of four supercar connoisseur associations blossomed from a memorable party. President of the Singapore ExotiCars Club (ECC) Chia Boon Teck fondly recalls his organisation’s hosting of the Supercar Club Sarawak (SCS) in Marina Bay Sands, which included the Sarawakians being treated to a 20-supercar convoy drive to high tea. Besides the fun he had, Chia remembers the gregarious affair for the stepping stone that it was, sharing, “two months later in June 2013, 30 ECC members flew up to Kuching to celebrate SCS’s second anniversary over a weekend of round-

the-clock partying. The Sarawakians taught the Singaporeans a new definition of ‘play hard’. More importantly, SCS introduced ECC to members of the Miri Supercars Owners Club (MSOC).” “We couldn’t get enough of one another,” recounts Chia. He divulges how the Sarawakians visited their newfound Singaporean friends again during the Singapore Formula One Grand Prix weekend in September 2013, and celebrated the event at ECC’s annual bash at the Marina Mandarin hotel. “Not wanting to be outdone, MSOC hosted SCS and ECC to a weekend of eco-adventure in Miri and

Mulu in November 2013, which involved chartered commercial planes and a private helicopter,” Chia tells of the clubs’ opulent expeditions. “The Superfriends from East Malaysia and Singapore then decided to complete the triangle with the West Malaysians in December 2013. They flew to Kuala Lumpur for a dinner with the Blue Jackets (a Kuala Lumpur supercar owners club) at the brand new Grand Hyatt hotel. A new alliance was forged instantly.” Eager to make known their newly forged alliance to all their respective members, the four supercar clubs organised a 5-day 4-night “friendship drive” across Kuala Lumpur, Cameron Highlands, Kuantan,

and Singapore in February 2014. This involved 50 cars from all four clubs and furthermore, involved the Sarawakians having to ship their supercars to Kuala Lumpur. “Talk about enthusiasm!” Chia adds. “At the end of the event, the presidents of the four clubs pledged to take turns to organise joint events throughout 2014 to keep the friendship torch alight and burning bright.” “When I was asked by one of my club’s member about a meeting with ECC in April last year, his immediate reaction was, ‘Singaporeans are snobbish. They will not want to know us.’ To our surprise, the ECC said yes and we had to tell everyone to rearrange their plans to come along,” disclosed SCS President Datuk Philip Ting. “Am I glad that we did! Members of ECC are not the ‘ugly Singaporeans’ we thought they would be. Singapore should give the ECC an award for being such good ambassadors of their country.” MSOC President William Lau expressed his gratitude toward his peers, while expressing his ambitions for the teething four-way partnership, “in a recent event, 2014 was smartly named as 2 nations 0 boundaries 1 drive/alliance 4 clubs. I believe in the next few years this alliance will connect with more clubs from around the globe, and plan a lifetime of infinite events, travel and share the same auto passion motto, and most importantly true friendship.”

Blue Jackets President Erwin Dato Azizi echoed Lau’s sentiments. “Our associations have created a platform for its members to share and learn new experiences, ranging from driving, technical, social and family gatherings as well as business networking opportunities to name a few. The core values that all the clubs share in common is the ability to respect and accept all its carefully chosen members as their extended family. But more importantly, it is the members’ ability to keep the bonds strong within each respective club, which will keep the ‘fire’ alive for the clubs to remain for the next generation,” he chimed in. “To the privileged few that are a part of this fraternity, this is just the beginning. BY MY HAND Introducing an elder craftsman who believes that elegance can only be achieved by tremendous human endeavour.

Beginning in the 1960s, a family of Italian ateliers carved a name for themselves by rigorously upholding the philosophies of Italian craftsmanship. Applying Italian handiwork in its unadulterated perfection to all their creations, brothers Fernando, Aldo and Vasco enjoyed exponential success over the decades with their now-Salone del Mobile stalwart and veteran, whom the design and interior industry always has high expectations of.

identity never crossing their minds, CEO and commercial director Lorenzo Toncelli and artistic manager Tommaso Toncelli spearhead one of the few furniture labels in the market that boasts its own research and development unit. Intrepidly forging ahead, Tommaso and Lorenzo share that their focus is dedicated to keeping Toncelli adaptive to advancements in technology and global style, while their strength is the attentiveness to detail of their bespoke brand’s experienced staff. Toncelli recently wowed fans at the recent Eurocucina fair, with a life-size model that depicts the ideal modern kitchen. A DECADE of DIVERSITY

Following a record-setting success of over 32,000 visitors in 2013, Fine Art Asia will be returning to Hong Kong for its milestone tenth occasion in October, shortly after the launch of its Beijing edition in May.

Asia’s leading annual art fair, Fine Art Asia, is set to take the global arts scene to even greater heights with its tenth edition at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre this year. The highly-anticipated event will be staged at the peak of the art season in Hong Kong from 4 – 7 October, and coincides with Sotheby’s auctions at the same venue. Its VIP preview and vernissage will be conducted on the eve of the event on 3 October. BRIDGING EAST AND WEST Reputed as the only fair to feature a vast range of collectibles from both Asia and the West, Fine Art Asia is now a key annual fixture in the international art calendar. The fair has grown exponentially over the past decade to function as a worldclass platform for some of the world’s most renowned galleries, catering to a rapidly expanding number of keen and knowledgeable collectors in Asia.

ONES TO WATCH Organised by Art & Antique International Fair Ltd (AAIF) and recognised as Hong Kong’s first globally acclaimed noncorporate art enterprise brand, Fine Art Asia will once again play host to 100 international galleries including top-tier dealers such as Rossi & Rossi (London and Hong Kong), Galerie Dumonteil (Paris, Shanghai and New York), and Vanderven Oriental Art (The Netherlands). Dealers, collectors and art enthusiasts can look forward to viewing collections ranging from ancient Chinese and Himalayan bronzes, to European antique furniture and decorative arts, as well as impressionist, modern and contemporary works. Making its debut at Fine Art Asia 2014 is MacConnal-Mason Gallery from London, a widely acclaimed establishment founded in 1893. The gallery specialises in English and European 19th and 20th century paintings and sculptures. Another new exhibitor is Walter Arader Himalayan Art, New York, showcasing its gilt bronze sculptures of Tibetan, Chinese and Nepalese origins that date back to the 14 – 18th centuries. David Aaron Ancient Arts, London, will be exhibiting at the fair yet again for its second year running,

whilst other renowned returning exhibitors include Siegelson, New York, as well as Bowman Sculpture, London. TEN YEARS, NEW FRONTIERS Aside from celebrating its landmark 10th edition of the fair this year, Fine Art Asia has also collaborated with Guardian Beijing, a well-established art organisation in China, to present the long-anticipated Beijing edition of the fair, Guardian Fine Art Asia (GFAA). GFAA promises an impressive display of museum-quality collections from Asia and Europe comprising fine art jewellery and timepieces, antique silver, and 20th century Chinese ink paintings. This highlight event is held in association with China Beijing International Fair for Trade in Services (CIFTIS) from 28 May to 1 June, a comprehensive international trade show organised by the Ministry of Commerce of the PRC and the People’s Government of Beijing Municipality, and supported by the World Trade Organisation. + www.fineartasia.com
