A NOTE FROM
THE PUBLISHER WOW! A big thank you to everyone who took the time and trouble to give us your feedback on the contents of our June/July issue. We are very encouraged by your feedback and we will no doubt endeavour to attend to as many of them as we possibly can. Unlike all the other magazines, AFFLUENT prides itself as being the only magazine with a targeted readership – the affluent. With such a targeted audience, our features, stories, events and commercials are primed to reach not the general public but select eyes. We are especially encouraged by the number of readers who have stepped forward to indicate their willingness to share aspects of their lives with other AFFLUENT readers to widen their network. As of now, we already have enough interesting individuals lined up to be featured till the end of the year! Be that as it may, readers who wish to share their stories of themselves at work, at play, or anything entrepreneurial, I would be most happy to hear from you at paul@affluent-media.com. For those who fancy making it to our cover, do drop me a note and let’s discuss the possibility. Between now and then, we hope you enjoy this issue.

AFFLUENT timepiece
In tribute to the art of ballet, Vacheron Constantin has added three exceptional timepieces to its Métiers d’Art Hommage à l’Art de la Danse collection showing Edgar Degas’ beloved ballerinas gliding gracefully beneath the ever-dancing hands. These new one-of-a-kind creations uses the ancestral art of Grand Feu grisaille enamelling that requires infinite patience, meticulous care and intense concentration and exacting skills of a master enamellist. The series successfully highlighted the art of classical ballet by reinterpreting the works of Degas, the French artist renowned for his works which depict the subject of dance. It all started back in 2007 when Vacheron Constantin, in becoming a patron of the Opéra National de Paris, provided a stage to showcase the traditions of the fine watch making artistic crafts known in French as Métiers d’Art. It brought together the craft of watch making, art and culture, celebrating the values on which the brand has been built since its founding in 1755.

frame, Degas’ beloved
ballerinas glide gracefully beneath the ever-dancing hands – drawing inspiration from three paintings by the master highlighting the life of a ballerina.
In creating these three new Métiers d’Art Hommage à l’Art de la Danse watches, Vacheron Constantin unveils the magic of complementary arts: that of the ballerina, the enameller and the watchmaker.

Drawing inspiration from works of Degas, the House master enamellist highlighted the life of a ballerina: dance school with Dancers Practicing at the Barre, dated 1877; the backstage of a dress rehearsal with Dancers near a Set, dated 1888; and the pinnacle of a ballerina’s life with Two Dancers Entering the Stage, painted circa 1877-1878. The details in the protagonists are amazing: the tiniest fold of the tutus, the smooth velvet of the ribbons encircling their neck, the transparency of tulle and muslin. What is most astonishing is the finesse in the
execution of Grand Feu grisaille enamel painting that reinterprets the exact moment, the gestures, the pose and the perspective, playing on chiaroscuro light and shade effects to anchor the scene firmly in reality. It is a feat for such an achievement requires a wealth of experience and of a master enamellist. Interestingly, enamelling is generally applied to

the House artisan used a translucent brown enamel base which served to accentuate the depth effect while lending a soft nuance to the painting. After applying this base, the enameller adds touches of Limoges white enamel that is then drawn out using needles, extremely fine brushes and even cactus thorns so as to create graded shades and play on the various pigments. Limoges white enamel is an extremely rare powder mixed with oils and it is an extremely difficult and challenging material to work with, requiring the artisan to display almost intuitive sensitivity. Each of the layers requires a firing operation that must be timed to the nearest second. The firing times are calculated according to the type and quantity of the material applied and their exact duration is one of the trade secrets of the artist who must juggle with a broad range of grey shades, perfect for the art of portrait painting as shown in depicting facial expressions. Framed by a finely polished 40 mm-diameter case, the Grand Feu grisaille enamelling of the Métiers d’Art Hommage à l’Art de la Danse is entirely handcrafted. The music to which the ballerinas move is the regular beat of the self-winding Calibre 2460, entirely developed and crafted in the Manufacture Vacheron Constantin. In recognition of its high quality craftsmanship and reliability produced in the territory of Geneva, the Métiers d’Art Hommage à l’Art de la Danse watches bear the prestigious Poinçon de Genève (Hallmark of Geneva), the ultimate token of Haute Horlogerie. + Available in Vacheron Constantin boutiques. Born in Singapore, Karan Tilani, a Shareholder and Director of the WORLD OF DIAMONDS, has been overseeing the development of the Group in Asia. Besides establishing a regional hub, Karan manages the requirements of distributors, works closely with auction houses and has been actively involved in marketing initiatives with top-of-the-line brands. “The various interactions with clients and partners are what I enjoy most. Plying the trade is much more than a life full of glamour; it gives me an insight to the complexities the megarich face. Once, the wife of a Russian oligarch had to choose between an exotic 22 carat fancy pink diamond and a rare 5 carat blue diamond as the centre stone of her ring. Being able to provide a solution to some of the wealthiest individuals on the planet is indeed self-fulfilling. And because I am a perfectionist, this is fascinating.” Karan enjoys the diversity in his job scope as he works across various industries. In Singapore, the WORLD OF DIAMONDS has sponsored official launches and subsequent themed parties for 1-Rochester’s swanky nightclub called Altimate. Positioned as ‘a diamond in the sky’, the ultralounge has sophisticated technology that features diamonds rotating in 3-dimensional orientations. Other recent collaborations include the Star Awards 2014 hosted by Mediacorp, an exclusive preview for the launch of the Ferrari California T automobile and an official sponsorship for a gourmet event with Clarke Quay, a destination hotspot under the CapitaMalls portfolio. The WORLD OF DIAMONDS has also since forged a partnership with KU DÉ TA for its Diamond Life Anniversary
and has a series of collaborations in the pipeline with Lamborghini Singapore for multiple events that extend into the Formula One Season. “Our diamonds often complement high-fashion wear, defined by luxurious tailoring; we have affiliations with a multitude of designer labels including Adolfo Dominguez, BCBGMAXAZRIA and Karen Millen, brands which are managed by Wing Tai Holdings in Singapore.” He explains why the WORLD OF DIAMONDS enjoys an unrivalled influence and long-standing reputation in the industry. “With several arms catering for varying needs, we are very selective of our partners – known to be the most established names globally. Being almost fully verticallyintegrated, we have ready access to plenty of resources from the mines to the market. Our Group also believes in reducing variable costs where possible; we purchase factories and buildings instead of leasing them. As sustainability is a key focus, we maintain our ethical sense by discriminating against blood diamonds and ensuring full transparency in our operations. The thousands of skilled individuals whom we provide careers and livelihoods to on all five continents whether directly or through our partners, has also garnered us strong support from various nongovernmental organizations.”
43
Born into a family of prestige, Karan’s exposure to the world of diamonds started in his teens. “My aunt is a connoisseur of rare diamonds and has often been attending auctions to secure important pieces; she married a diamond mogul and was eventually brought into the trade. I had the privilege of bringing diamonds to school for show-and-tell sessions and was captivated by the tiny, brilliant stones which command sky-high prices. The fact that it takes immense patience and skill to release the beauty of a diamond evoked my interest,” explains Karan who has been with the Group for about three years.
have boutiques here in Singapore. We don’t engage in the retail scene as it’s a conflict of interest, since we already work with several upscale jewelers. To the discerning few whom we have been catering to directly, requests included a diamond encrusted Spirit of Ecstasy (the bonnet ornament on Rolls-Royce automobiles), diamond chandeliers and even diamond shoelaces. Pampering the wives of billionaires and members of royal families
involves extraordinary diamonds, hours of intensive labor undertaken with painstaking excellence and exceptional designs.”
Karan’s work presents him an extravagant life with unique challenges. “Due to our widespread market reach, we have directors, executives and partners based in almost every part of the world. Often there are times when some of our partners are uncomfortable in making decisions in certain countries because of varying cultures and working styles,” he says.
Thefts, robberies and kidnappings have always been associated with the diamond industry. “It’s a lifethreatening danger that lurks behind every important member of the trade. Our Group has a strong foothold in the Russian Federation and I’ve had to accept overseas travel with bodyguards, as much as I despise the additional attention,” he shares.
Being associated with one of the world’s largest privately held diamond corporations, Karan says, is also about meeting the unique demands of the mega-rich. “I’ve personally recommended many of the high-fliers whom have approached us to shop at some of the luxury brands, which also
During vacations, Karan frequents cruising in the French Riviera and embracing tranquility in The Bahamas. On business trips to South America and Russia, he savours the helicopter rides during the exploration of diamond mines. “About the airline – Emirates is the preferred choice for the WORLD OF DIAMONDS thanks to its first-class experience”, he adds.
his part in making a better world for the underprivileged. “In many countries, humanity is exploited, child labor is practised and families are dislocated as a result of armed conflicts. Here, I try to support as many non-profit initiatives as I can that’s organized by a few friends in the high society – many of these are held at the prestigious St. Regis Singapore. I have come to realize that contentment should be derived out of passion and not from monetary achievements. I personally aim to eradicate blood diamonds completely; if I can have a wish granted, it is to restore the livelihoods of the millions of individuals who have been displaced and used as slaves as a result of illegal diamond mining operations. I aspire to present a new future for Africa.” + WORLD OF DIAMONDS Group of Companies Hoveniersstraat 53, 2018 Antwerpen, Belgium www.worldofdiamonds.tv info@worldofdiamonds.tv

Honest-toGoodness Traders Closely knitted at work and at leisure, HENRY and NICHOLAS LIM make such a strong and affable father-andson team their customers feel right at home at Chuan Watch.
Opposite After almost 20 years in business, Chuan Watch has garnered an international market with Nicholas Lim spearheading the online platform, supported by his dad, founder Henry Lim. Below Father and son bond further over their need for speed.
Whenever either father or son, Henry or Nicholas Lim, notices that a client at Chuan Watch is coveting a timepiece beyond his means, he would gently remind the client that the watches they offer are not necessities, but luxury items, and that he should not succumb to temptation if buying one would become his financial burden. Such are the integrity and honesty that this duo works with. Henry Lim started Chuan Watch in 1995 – after over 15 years of experience in watch repair and restoration at a leading international Swiss watch company that gave him his horology training in Switzerland. Being married with four children, Henry worked long hours at his new venture to support his large family. Fortunately, his luxury watch business grew steadily and even provided jobs for several relatives. Now, the Lims live in a prime landed property at Tanjong Katong.
45
Henry’s eldest son, 23-year-old Nicholas Lim, is a talented guitarist who won multiple competitions in his younger days. Having realised how tough it is to make good as a musician in Singapore, he decided to help his father grow his empire instead five years ago. There was no turning back since. Henry’s traditional business model had earned its untainted reputation over the years through word-ofmouth recommendations by clients including bankers, lawyers, doctors and businessmen. Nicholas took it to the next level via the Internet and social media – and it all switched to high-speed mode since. This supersized the business across the globe, conquering new markets including Switzerland, Mexico, Sweden, Germany and the USA. “Many of our customers are attracted by our ‘buy-back’ policy, with which we will buy the watch (in good condition, of course) that they bought from us within a year of their purchase at a mere 10 to 15 per cent depreciation. This gives our customers peace of mind – should they wish to cash out for any reason, their worst case scenario is a small depreciation,” shares Nicholas. Every watch purchased from Chuan comes with this in-house warranty and a servicing package. Since they also trade pre-owned watches, both father and son take their duty of checking for authenticity very seriously. Either one of them is always in the shop to ascertain that timepieces brought in for resale are genuine. “We typically deal with watches that are each worth tens of thousands. All it takes is one fake watch to wipe out the
humble combined margins of many genuine ones,” explains Henry. Outside of work, they share the same interest in fast cars. It started two years ago when Henry bought his Ferrari 599. “Many young men in the ’70s dreamt of owning a Ferrari. I was so happy for him when he finally bought one,” recalls Nicholas. Shortly after, Henry joined the ExotiCars Club for owners of exotic cars. One year later, Nicholas bought himself a Maserati to join his father for some adrenaline-pumping drives, and the latter roped him into the ExotiCars Club. The junior has since traded in his Maserati for a Ferrari F430 Spider. “We’ve made many friends in the club, some of whom are watch enthusiasts who would jokingly ask us for a discount. They buy from us because of the trust we’ve built between us as fellow club members. Making a decent
margin in business is all we need. It’s a win-win when we give a friendly discount and both sides are happy. We’d much rather make less money to keep a friend, than make more and lose friends,” opines Nicholas. Many testimonials on Chuan Watch’s website also show how their clients love their friendly and fast service – no doubt, they have garnered a strong, loyal following for years to come. +

A Shell of Luxury Any designer that stands out that quickly deserves a mention – meet Úna Burke, the next name in leather you don’t want to miss.
It is said that most geniuses come from humble beginnings, and such is true for one Úna Burke, an upscale fashion designer that has made it on everyone’s to-watch list in record time. From a farm in a small, rural, Irish town, it seems inconceivable that such work would originate from someone who has almost never been exposed to fashion, but then again, miracles do happen. With the combination of leather and metal being her specialty, Úna caught the attention of many a fashion editor with her graduate collection; a rare feat for any new designer. Almost four years later, she has carved out her own niche that is desired by the likes of Daphne Guinness, Lady Gaga and Jennifer Lawrence, just to name a few. With almost as many design awards as she has grommets and a burgeoning fan base, we wondered, what makes her tick? Leather, it seems.
All images Deep autumnal hues and arm winter tones of blueberry colour Úna’s revolutionary collection for AW 2014.
“Growing up on a farm, I have respect for animals and for the fact that I work with animal skin,” she says. Fascinated by the human psyche, the designer who emerged with a Masters in Fashion from the London College of Fashion has since birthed collections that revolve around the many facets of darkness. Drowning, death rituals and most recently, the presence of emptiness – a void, act as her various sources of inspiration, giving life to a complex patchwork of leather and metal, somehow deriving a certain amount of femininity from such traditionally masculine material.
While Úna does create sculptural art pieces, her wearable items include a variety of fitting bodices, corsets, cuffs, bags and even leather constructed jackets that bear resemblance to body armor, all in cutting edge fashion. Her primary choice of material is often vegetable-tanned leather and Italian brass fittings, all pieced together by hand (yes, every single piece) in her south London atelier. Although easily associated with fetishistic tendencies, Úna’s work is apparently nothing but – the gentle sloping curves of her work seek to embrace the feminine form rather than to restrict it. And so the proof is in the pudding; most of her corsets are said to support comfortably, enhancing the user’s posture instead of hindering it, leaving us wondering if this is the corset’s second coming. + Úna Burke’s AW14 collection titled ‘The Void Between’ is available at www.notjustalabel.com/unaburke.
Intrigued by its form, texture and longevity, Úna mentions in a past interview that she is “drawn to leather because of her upbringing”.

Although the general feel of oversized ambiguity is present, loud splashes of colour juxtaposed against the heavier fabrics signals growth – a sense of adventure, if you will. In sum total, the capsule comprised black, whites and greys with the occasional guesting of dusty blues, deep greens and a pop of floral when you least expect it. We say keep on it - it’s definitely less art student and more wearable.
All images Ksanyusun & Vu Ta Linh’s debut capsule collections on the AFF runway.
Showing off what they’ve learnt since their winning debut at last year’s Audi Star Creation, champions Vu Ta Linh and Sun Yijin’s capsule collections grace the AFF runways for the first time.
Fresh from their year-long internship at fashion giant F J Benjamin, the reigning champions of the Audi Star Creation 2013 competition continue to bust out their chops and savour the final fruits of their prize – a coveted runway at the Audi Fashion Festival showcasing their revamped winning collections. For newcomers in the industry, both winners put their best foot forward and definitely didn’t disappoint. Vietnam’s 27 year-old Vu Ta Linh took a slightly more commercial direction, deviating from his initial complexity in embroidery, his collection titled ‘Indigo’ is markedly more feminine than his winning debut. Serving to embody the lyrics from a popular Viet song, “Say what you want to say, do what you want to do,” Indigo saw more cinched waists, though Vu’s obvious love for drapery and tartan still shines through. Kimono-style necklines
On the other side of the coin is China’s Sun Yijin, the brainchild of the now emerging label Ksanyusun – now based in Singapore. Having always been exposed to the seasonal elements in her home cities, Sun’s capsule collection named ‘Winter’ shows herself reminiscing about the soft snows and frozen flora and fauna, yet celebrating her experiences with tropical climate. Flowing fabrics in the colours of winter came first, followed by the deep emeralds and bold floral prints piercing through the monotony. Bold pops of orange wrapped up the collection, seemingly harkening to the sounds of tropical summer, albeit unexpectedly translated in heavier fabrics of knit. Urban and clean, Sun’s collection definitely aims to speak to the modern, upscale woman who enjoys her pastels as much as she likes structured shapes. Drop-waists remind the audience that this is, indeed, a contemporary collection despite the easy shapes and palette. +
SUPERSTAR SUPERNOVA
were clearly referenced here, but heavy wools and knits replaced the otherwise expected soft silks. But what remains interesting is the pairing of wool with lighter fabrics like organza and linen – fabrics that are ironically responsible for giving the outfits their volume.

BARE THE CANVAS
01
To avoid drawing attention elsewhere, (read: dark eye circles) make sure your canvas is prepared cleanly and evenly. If you have drier skin, opt for a similarly moisturising BB or CC cream, or if you’re prone to oil, carry about some powder for touch ups. Blush is to be applied with a light hand, or none at all, for maximum effect.
03
TIP! If you want a pop of colour, adding a touch of gold eye shadow on the inner corner and the bottom lash line makes a huge difference.
02
KEEP A LID ON IT Your lids take centre stage here if you opt for an orchid eye. Prepare a good base, one that is part cream part powder to give a colour that pops and pat your desired plum shadow over. As usual, the rule of thumb is to go from light to dark, so start with the lighter shades of purple from the inner eye and end off with the darkest at your wing. Since plums & violets are generally darker, you’d do better with your liner done at the later bit, or some retouching will need to ensue. Choose a gel liner or a very smoky pencil liner for best effect.

THE
Gilded Orchid
06
The ultimate fall look consists of two hues: orchid and gold. To be worn either on the eyes or lips, it’s strong combination that can be both sexy and subtle, depending on how you wield that brush. Match the jewelled tones in your wardrobe with your lids and lips this fall and follow us down the rabbit hole. 07

CLAWS OUT They say the lips must match the nails; we disagree. Although matchy-matchy isn’t a bad look, we suggest your nails having a darker colour than your lips. To mix in gold with your orchid smackers, opt for a gilded gold nail. The contrast alone will draw attention wherever you go.

Orchid lips are particularly popular for those who don’t want the hassle of doing an eye. For darker purple lips, just accentuate the eyes with a light dash of liner and mascara, but leave the cheeks mostly bare. A violet lip will bring out the clarity and fairness of your skin, so it’s an effective way to make your complexion seem brighter than usual.

Time For Renewal Draw flawless skin from nature, all without the help of makeup. When it comes to skincare, there are few who would dare to try and best the Japanese. Don’t Bat An Eyelid Dr. Kim Byung Gun of BK Plastic Surgery answers the most pressing questions regarding eyelid surgery. At the mention of eyelid surgery, most people only think of a procedure for those desiring double eyelids. Well, double eyelids are just one enhancement of this treatment. Of course, it is true that South Korea is ranked number one in the world for its eyelid surgery; however, most of my patients, before and after eyelid surgery, still have typical questions for me. I wish to answer these frequent questions, which often revolve around these three scenarios: I WANT TO DO REVISION SURGERY Some of my patients come after their first surgery done by a different plastic surgeon. They complain about their bad results after surgery and ask me how to fix the problem. I give them my solutions regarding revision surgery. Usually, revision eyelid surgery is more complicated than the initial surgery. This is because some patients might still have some scars after primary surgery around their eyes. With this scar tissue, it is not easy to do revision. However, this is better than leaving it as it is, because it will keep giving more and more stress to patients. I WANT TO REMOVE ALL SCARS AROUND MY EYES Similarly for the removal of scar tissue, I totally relate to my patients when they worry about scars after surgery. When the results that turn out are really unnatural, with many scars around eyes, most of my patients hate to look in the mirror. I don’t want my patients to have to live through this. After revision surgery, scars may shrink and become less noticeable over time.
I WANT TO REMOVE ALL WRINKLES AROUND MY EYES As skin loses its elasticity with age, one’s eyelids may become droopy, producing a sleepy or tired face. For these patients who want to remove wrinkles around the eye area, I recommend having one of the different types of anti-aging procedures, such as upper eyelid lift, upper blepharoplasty, or lower eyelid lift, lower blepharoplasty. If patients desire non-surgical procedures, there are other options like fillers or botox. The best I would recommend is our stem cell injection. If you come to our website, you may see two methods using stem cells, stem cell injection and stem cell graft. + BK Plastic Surgery Hospital BK Building, 106, Dosan-daero, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, Korea Tel: +82 10 5021 8886 www.bkhospital.com

BUDAPEST A Precious Jewel Of Europe Join me, Kwok Leong, on a journey to explore all that this capital city of Hungary has to offer travellers.
75
FASCINATING BUDAPEST While savouring the best cheesecake I had tasted in many years aboard Turkish Airlines, my mind wandered back to Budapest, where I had the time of my life. Thanks to Budapest Essentials festival which took place between May 27th and June 1st of 2014, I was able to see what the vibrant city was all about, through the eyes of a foreigner.
DAY 1 – BAR HOPPING A taxi ride from Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport to the heart of the city took a mere 30 minutes. It was such a delight to find my stylish 4-star La Prima Fashion Hotel strategically located next to the pedestrian-only shopper’s paradise at Vaci Street, close to the beautiful Danube River bank and also the city’s major transportation hub.
Essentially, Budapest comprises of “Buda” on the west side of the great River Danube, and “Pest” on the east side of the river. From the ancient Buda Castle to the high-end Andrassy Avenue, both parts of the city are connected with iconic bridges, by love.
With temperature hovering around 23 degrees Celcius, it was a pleasure to walk around in the city on foot. Chilling out at Tip Top Bar and atop the Design Terminal was great, offering an elevated view of the streets below. However, it was the Sziget Eye at Elisabeth Square that gave me a spectacular bird’s eye view of Budapest city, especially when the cabin reached the top of the wheel. Keen to be part of Budapest Essentials festival, my first night was spent experiencing the local nightlife in Budapest. Hopping from the brilliant Gozsdu Sky Terrace with the bright-lit Liberty Statue atop Gellert Hill as the backdrop, the impressive 360 bar

Taking part in the “Colourful City Project” gave me the opportunity to contribute colours to a public wall in the Old Jewish district. Lunch was at Macesz Huszár just around the corner, where I tasted the unique Hungarian-infused kosher cuisine for the first time. with a view of the beautiful surroundings in the city especially the St. Stephens Basilica, to the unique Club Akvárium at the sunken part of Elisabeth Square, and the great reinventor Club Ötkert; there were only more live music, more food and drinks until the wee hours of the night. DAY 2 – DAY OF SURPRISES My second day started with a satisfying continental buffet breakfast in the hotel, and continued to the intriguing Cold War Park on the “Buda” side of the city. Crossing the iconic Széchenyi Chain Bridge over River Danube was one of the defining moments of my trip. Flanked by two guardian lions at the abutment, the stunning bridge had a long history and was one of the greatest engineering feats during the 19th century.
My tour continued to the newly opened fashion hub in Budapest, Paloma. The beautiful Art Nouveau building complex was transformed from being disused into a hub for budding designers to showcase their talents. Later, led by a new-found Hungarian friend, I discovered the impressive collection of golden artefacts at the private Zelnik István Southeast Asian Gold Museum along the posh Andrássy Avenue. Some shipwreck treasures were even up for sale. Back in the city center, this friend insisted that I walk through the Freedom Square Fountain, assuring that I would not get wet! Transformed from a ruined building into a popular hangout place, the ruin pubs were such a brilliant concept and one of the must-see attractions in Budapest. My first ruin pub experience was the Fogasház, where I had the authentic Hungarian Goulash served with bread slices for dinner, and the sumptuous Hungarian Strudel with a variety of fillings as dessert. Farm was another ruin pub serving smooth wines, generous servings of cheese platter and chunky cured meat. My favourite ruin pub was Simpla Kert. Serving an eclectic mix of cocktails and smooth beers, the pub won my heart with its character, its decorations, the atmosphere, and the colourful lightings.
Opened for a limited time only, the Cold War Park showcased all deactivated weapons and machines used during the war, which I had the opportunity to lay my hands on; but the seat in the fighter jet was not quite comfortable though. Then came a surprise for me as I was taken for a flight at low altitude around Budapest city in the discontinued Malev HA-LIX aircraft. What a thrilling way to see the Budapest skyline!
DAY 3 – MORE EXCITING ACTIVITIES My 3rd day began with a tour to the Széchenyi Bath for a soaking good time. Comprised of 3 outdoor pools and 15 indoor pools of various temperatures, the neo-baroque style thermal spring bath was the largest in Budapest and the whole of Europe. Famous for its purported healing properties, the medicinal water of the thermal spring bath was delivered from both natural and specially drilled springs beneath Budapest.
Back at Heroes’ Square on the Pest side, visitors were treated with a traditional Hungarian Folk Dance performance by Angyalfoldi Vadrozsa Ensemble. The picture-perfect moment reminded me of Robert Doisneau’s famous 1949 poster – La Dance (The Last Waltz).

Transformed from a ruined
building into a popular hangout place, the ruin pubs were such a brilliant concept and one of the must-see attractions in Budapest.
Lunch was served at the trendy Kiosk Restaurant at the beautiful March 15 Square. Attached to the restaurant was a wine room with a large wine collection to satisfy the most discerning of wine lovers. No visit to Budapest is complete without visiting all the major attractions like the Hungarian Parliament, Margaret Island, the Buda Castle, the Royal Palace, the Liberty Statue, Matthias Church and Fisherman’s Bastion. Luckily, I found an alternative way to cover all of them from a different perspective – by boarding one of the Legenda Sightseeing Cruises along River Danube! Back at the port, I walked towards the BuddhaBar Hotel for a chill-out session. Receiving the Best International Hotel Interior Award in 2013, this hotel featured an enormous golden Buddha statue as the centrepiece in the bar, exuding a sense of calmness and tranquillity to the guests. Saving the best for last was my favourite Innio Wine Bar where I had a pampering fine dining experience in a cozy ambience. The restaurant served very smooth white and red wine, a fine cheese selection and beautiful dishes that looked too good to eat. My
”
night ended very upbeat at another Budapest Essential event with the energetic performance by the Gorillaz Sound System. DAY 4 – MY LAST STOP During the last day of my Budapest trip, I managed to make a short trip to Szimpla Farmers’ Market. There was street performance, an alfresco café tucked away in the courtyard; up for sale were farm fresh berries, herbs, home-made jams, and an overwhelming variety of dairy products and cured meat. What really caught my fancy was the rich and flavourful truffle pesto in a small jar. SZIA BUDAPEST! It was a remarkable effort by the Hungarian Tourism Board to showcase Budapest to the world, as I found myself fallen in love with the great city. As there was more to Budapest than met the eye, I hope to come back and explore other areas of the city in the future. + To find out more about the magical Budapest and Hungarian tourism, please log on to www.gotohungary.com

Just Like Home Sri panwa, an all-pool villa luxury resort that sets the stage for holiday retreats and resort development.
There is no place like home.
Above Voted as one of the top five resorts in Thailand and talked about as one of the most seductive hotels in the world. Opposite Perched high atop Cape Panwa, exquisite sunrises and open sunsets are a given.
The family-owned Sri Panwa, lauded for its breathtaking and stunning views of South Eastern tip of Phuket has also a most impressive sting of accolades and awards that bears testament to one man’s vision and truly, a dream come true. The grandson of the Charn Issara Group, also one of Thailand’s most established developers, embarked on a spirited journey that made way for the building and development of Sri Panwa. Through school, his travels, sheer inspiration, fiery passion and an insatiable appetite for life, Vorasit Issara, or fondly known as “Wan” grouped together like-minded friends and personalized the establishment with a service oriented attitude, a fun personality and above all, prized privacy as necessary and integral to a restful and relaxed holiday.
Yes indeed, it makes sense for any holiday retreat to include dining options to suit everyone, if not, a well travelled visitor, or to have a suite of facilities that cater to priorities and perhaps too, a wide range of activities that would reflect an exciting and memorable holiday. But the one thing that a guest would probably never forget, is how the choice of hotel made him feel right at home, in good company, and in good hands. I felt this ‘moment’ when I returned to the villa right after a beautiful night of dinner and drinks, feeling happy, only to find a cute little note that said, ‘Life is fragile, like the dew hanging delicately on the grass, crystal drops that will be carried away on the first morning breeze’ – Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche. A tiny seashell rested on the cute little note, which was placed on my
79
pillow signaling a time for sleep, and for rest. I was captivated by this note, by its inspiration and of how it ended up there in the very first place. It was subtle but it was a beautiful thought. I brought both the note and the seashell back to Singapore.
Tokujoushu sake, Midori, fresh mint, lime and soda water) that sits alongside premium sake, champagne and wines from France, South Africa and Chile. Cocktail hours take on a different dimension that transcend beyond time and space, differentiated, yet personal.
PERSONALLY YOURS Hotel villas at Sri Panwa sit 40-60 meters above sea level and each is wrapped with floor to ceiling glass windows, with a 12-meter infinityedge pool that offers up a full and commanding view of the surrounding islands and the Andaman sea.
Restaurant concepts are also carefully and well thought out. Baba Soul Food with its Sino- Portuguese setting is most suited for romantic dinners and for cosy groups looking to experience authentic Thai specialties with family and close friends. Ingredients are fresh and sourced from H.M. The King’s Royal Project in the northern farms of Thailand, cooking techniques are local, recipes are handed down from generations of family and friends, and chefs who whip up dishes with heart and soul all suggest that at the core of Baba Soul is a sense of ‘home’, one that belongs to its host and her guests alike.
Perched high atop Cape Panwa, exquisite sunrises and open sunsets are a given, sunbathing terraces and an outdoor bathing area double up the X-factor for an uninhibited time away from home and familiar spaces. It is almost impossible not to dream or think up possibilities in life and journeys, as if there was a real connection with the ocean and the heavens above, a kind of unity; mind, body, soul and spirit. And like a finished poem, a sense of calm and love. The hotel has already been voted as one of the top five resorts in Thailand and talked about, as one of the most seductive hotels in the world. A celebrity following with names from the entertainment, music, fashion and arts industries celebrate the soul of Sri Panwa alongside business legends and royalty.

I already
knew what I wanted in contemporary design but I wanted to learn five star service because that is what really makes a luxury hotel.

– Vorasit Issara, Founder and Managing Director of Sri Panwa
Open kitchens seem to figure prominently at Sri Panwa as the Baba Poolclub also houses a cooking school, and BabaQ, an all-day dining restaurant offering up gourmet breakfasts, Japanese and Italian cuisine, basic Thai and Hot Pot soup variations, and a BBQ and Grill section with over 100 combinations complete with exotic and homemade sides and sauces.
Rooftop lounge Baba Nest is the hotel’s latest addition that boasts magnificent views with a 360 degree infinity pool that further supports its unparalleled pitch by being one of the world’s most stylish and exciting bars to be at. REFLECTIONS
by Chia Boon Teck
GIVE CREDIT WHERE CREDIT IS DUE HAPPY BIRTHDAY SINGAPORE, and A BIG THANK YOU TO OUR GOVERNMENT for having taken us this far! There, I said it. It is human nature to complain at the slightest glitch, and shrug our shoulders nonchalantly when others do a good job that benefits us. We see this behavior being dished out not only to the government, but across the board to all social and voluntary communities as well, for example, to grassroots organizations, condominium and social club committees. At the government level, many ministers and top civil servants take big pay cuts (compared to what they could be paid in private sectors) to help build the nation. People shrug off such sacrifices as if it were their entitlement to be well looked after. At the grassroots level, volunteer grassroots leaders often spend more time at the community centers (organizing one event after another for the benefit and enjoyment of the constituents) than at home with their family. Constituents often treat such volunteers as though they were employees who owed the constituents some duty or other. Volunteer condominium owners who step forward to serve their condominium often get vilified by residents (over trivial matters) who don’t seem to understand that their volunteer condominium council members are helping all the unit owners to run and maintain the condominium facilities without remuneration. Similarly, social club committees are made up of ordinary members who volunteer to help run the social club for nothing in return except for the feel good factor when they are involved in successfully completing a project or organizing an event. And to make volunteerism even more unattractive, such volunteers are often governed by some law or other which places them in a position of trust and exposes them to criminal prosecution and civil suits for any perceived wrongdoings. This is necessary so as to deter people from masquerading as a volunteer to champion their own hidden ambitions and agenda. One serious consequence of the above realities is that leaders have an extremely difficult task in attracting and persuading a few good men to step up to serve the organization and its community. Why should anyone in their right frame of mind step forward? It makes more sense to sit on the fence to take pot shots at volunteers than to be the volunteer being abused. Happily however, every organization and community has its fair share of members with a sense of ownership, a sense of pride, and a sense of camaraderie. However, identifying such individuals in the organization or community is one thing; persuading them to take the quantum leap of stepping forward to serve is another. From my own experiences in having served and still serving many organizations and communities in the last two decades, my observation is that where the organization is led by a weak leader (eg. one who dares not make decisions for fear of one thing or another; or one who takes all the credits and distributes all the blames; or one who does not stand up for his committee members when the occasion calls for it), the committee members will be too busy politicking to do any good for the organization or its community. The above phenomenon explains the 80%-20% principle ie statistics show that in most organizations, 80% of the work are done by 20% of the committee. In other words, in a committee of 10 members, two of them are doing 80% of the work, with the other 8 members just making up the numbers in the committee. If any of the committees we are in boasts a higher statistic than this, then that says something about the committee’s leadership. So if we are in some organization or community, let’s take a minute to reflect on some of the benefits that we have enjoyed from the sacrifices of our fellow members who stepped up to serve us and our community. Let’s not take them for granted because if they all step down thinking that it’s all a thankless task, we’d end up with a worthless membership in an organization wasted for its potential. Somebody’s got to do the job. If we are not prepared to do it ourselves, then the least we could do is to lend our support to others who are. Let’s stand up and be counted, or at least let’s give credit where credit is due.

Playing Host Paul Smith’s ever-ebullient creative spirit expands from fashion to fine porcelain, through his latest collaboration with Lladró: The Guest by Paul Smith.
to Happiness
After several groundbreaking joint productions with renowned artists, designers and art directors for The Guest collection by Lladró Atelier, Lladró has invited British fashion luminary, Sir Paul Smith, to design a new guest series of porcelain character figurines. Since its launch in 2012, The Guest has featured the works of Spanish designer Jaime Hayon, who conceived The Guest collections for Lladró; American artists Tim Biskup and Gary Baseman; and Japanese studio Devilrobots, among others. Each of these limited edition guest series exemplifies the particular world and distinctive personality of the collaborating artist, and is an original project in response to the mandate of Lladró Atelier as a space for creativity for the brand’s designers to open new experience in pocelain. GAME OF CAT AND DOG The result of this upbeat and mischievous collaboration between Lladró and Paul Smith is two porcelain character figurines donning cat and dog masks. Feline and canine representations in this collection stand for the intriguing magnetism between opposites – highlighting how porcelain and fashion, innovation and tradition, are irresistibly drawn to one another like cat and dog. Their bodies are covered in a smattering of quaintly coloured confetti in geometric patterns, reflecting the punchy and flamboyant signature style that Paul Smith is so famous and loved for. These new figurines come in two sizes like the rest of The Guest collection’s pieces: large in limited edition of 250 at 52cm tall, and small in a numbered edition standing at 30cm.
Right Cat and dog masks adorn this original character series to represent a playful chemistry between two opposites.

A JOYFUL UNION On the subject of ‘his’ guest work, Paul Smith explains: “I wanted an object that makes any home happy”. ‘Happy’ indeed encapsulates the essence of The Guest by Paul Smith, as well as that of the designer himself, who is most well known for introducing colour to the classic English aesthetic. The artisans at Lladró have in turn mirrored this unique aesthetic, as they capture the fashion designer’s personal and creative world with their expert hands. Passion for detail is a key feature shared by both Paul Smith and the artists of Lladró; whilst Lladró Atelier’s craftsmen in Valencia, Spain, recreate the characters with utmost meticulousness, Paul Smith takes great care in perfecting the surprise elements of his designs.
CLASSIC WITH A TWIST The iconic Spanish company’s ability to transform porcelain – a ceramic medium that can be traced back thousands of years – into a myriad of contemporary decorative and functional objects, was what attracted Paul Smith to lend his creative juices to Lladró’s project. Established in 1953, Lladró has long been a household name for their figurines and collectibles using the finest handmade porcelain from Valencia, Spain. “Lladró is impressive because all is made and painted by hand, and every piece is created at their wonderful headquarters in Valencia. That’s becoming more and more rare in today’s highly computerised and mechanised world,” he enthuses.
Clockwise from left Paul Smith, 68, is Britain’s foremost fashion designer; The Guest by Paul Smith series comes in two sizes; Each piece is meticulously hand-painted by the craftsmen at Lladró Atelier.
Paul Smith’s character designs are the latest to join The Guest series in its sixth edition. Besides being available at all Lladró and Paul Smith shops and online stores, The Guest by Paul Smith is also retailing at selected galleries and concept stores. +

FOR THOSE WHO WANDER Mercedes-Benz unveils new character-driven ways to explore the open road and beyond.
In Clarke Quay which was teeming with an excited throng of exclusive Mercedes-Benz guests, the highly anticipated Mercedes-Benz GLA 200, GLA 200 CDI and GLA 250 4MATIC were unveiled. Debuted in Singapore in conjunction with nightlife district Clarke Quay’s vivacious Glow Party, the new offerings from the world-renowned master class car manufacturer rolled out in the neon painted and glow stick-lighted affair to a resounding applause. Sleek yet multifunctional, the new GLA models boast immense control and steering, impressive speed and acceleration, despite providing its drivers with generous storage and passenger space. Dancers and water drum performers flanked the Mercedes-Benz GLA automobiles as they were introduced to the VIP guests of Mercedes-Benz. Based on the acclaimed Mercedes-Benz A-Class, the Mercedes-Benz GLA series is engineered with more headroom and ground clearance. These lithe interpretations of the SUV are evidently Mercedes-Benz’s bid to offer the discerning passenger a more comfortable ride, although it is a drive with tangibly greater inertia. The power of their 1.6 and 2.0-litre petrol engines range from 100kW generating 135hp and a maximum torque of 300Nm in the GLA 200 CDI, to 115 kW producing 156hp in the GLA 200 and 155 kW generating 211 hp in the GLA 250.

“The new GLA is the embodiment of the adventurer in us all. It is ever ready to take on the greatest challenges but only with a personality that matches that of its driver,” shared President and CEO of Mercedes-Benz Singapore Wolfgang Huppenbauer. “The Glow Party is the representation of what the GLA is – electric, young and edgy. It is dramatically daring and stylishly powerful.” True to Huppenbauer’s description of this breathtaking exhibition of German engineering, these lightfooted machines arrive at a time when luxury manufacturers have been recently purveying extremely capable hatchbacks. – Wolfgang Huppenbauer, President and CEO of Mercedes-Benz Singapore looking Mercedes-Benz GLA series stares down its contemporaries, the likes of the BMW X1, boasting a sleeker silhouette than the highly acclaimed Audi Q3, as well as a stronger grip than the capable Range Rover Evoque, which is apparent when the MercedesBenz GLAs negotiate acute angles. The strength of the GLA family’s chassis is telling of its Mercedes-Benz lineage, while its handsome interior is lined with top-notch leather and is stitched to the lofty expectations of the Mercedes-Benz faithful. Cushioned by improved suspension, this 4x4 collection performs reasonably well off-road and is equipped with fuel-efficient turbo engines, which each showcase significant mitigations in carbon dioxide emissions from previous MercedesBenz creations. Innovation and intelligence perpetuates throughout the GLA design, with highlights like an improved sensory system for predicting collisions and activating the car’s brakes. Besides active parking assist, the GLA line is also equipped with attention assist drowsiness detection, downhill speed regulation as well as lane tracking package with blind spot and lane keeping assist, which couples with the lauded existing safety technology of Mercedes-Benz for an extremely safe drive. + Mercedes-Benz Center Singapore Cycle & Carriage Industries Pte Ltd (Exclusive Dealer) 301 Alexandra Road Singapore 159968 Tel: +65 6298 1818

First Port Of Call Signature local dishes and exquisite design mark a new era for the iconic site at Clifford Pier, the latest all day dining restaurant by Fullerton Bay Hotel. Step into the old world charm at Clifford Pier and enjoy the beautiful harbour setting that was once the first port of call in Singapore. Diners will be enchanted not only by its heritage but also the chic ambience of the eatery that has been fitted with bespoke lights, fabrics and an eclectic mix of furniture, adding much flair to the iconic hot spot that offers scenic harbour views that have endeared Singapore. In tribute to its historical place in Singapore, the best of island’s delicacies with reinterpretations of Asian specialties and Western classics are highlights in the menu of the 208-seater restaurant. Open for breakfast, it has an all-day menu for lunch and dinner, an afternoon tea menu and a supper menu that offers Teochew Porridge.
To reflect its cosmopolitan roots, diners are treated with Asian crisps, fish crackers, rempeyek and belinjo crackers that come with homemade dips of sambal chilli sauce and a tamarind sauce to whet an appetite. An impressive array of favourite dishes is listed in its menu. Sample the Heritage Rolls that offer a mixed platter of fresh popiah, crispy spring rolls and Vietnamese spring rolls, with dipping sauce. Various hawker fare reinterpreted with top quality ingredients include Fried Carrot Cake served with prawns and scallions, Oyster Omelette that uses plump oysters from France with egg batter and Kong Bak Boa featuring tender slabs of braised Iberico pork belly with steamed buns. I recommend the mutton soup cooked in traditional spices, Uni Glass Noodle that was chilled with sea urchin, salted egg and salmon roe in lime truffle sauce and also the Rickshaw Noodles in pork broth and traditional condiments – they are not only authentic but very tasty.

The Travelling Heart Mention Garibaldi and it brings to mind epicurean Italian treats with consistent quality. Meet ROBERTO GALETTI, its award-winning executive chef/owner with the humility to keep on improving his creations even though he has won numerous accolades.
“
Roberto’s open
secret is the traditional Italian ingredients that he uses to infuse the “flavours of home”, after having picked each one carefully.
”
“What I am serving to the people who come to my restaurant is not just Italian food; what I want to serve to my customers is an experience,” enthuses Roberto Galetti, executive chef and managing director of the popular Garibaldi Italian Restaurant & Bar. “I want it to be such that if my customer closes his eyes, he believes that he is in Brescia, sitting outside a restaurant along the streets of the old town – with the smell of the food wafting through the air, he gently sips from his glass of wine, surrounded by the beauty of the city around him,” he elaborates on invoking tastes of his hometown in his cuisine.
51
Roberto grew up in Brescia, Italy, a city renowned for its beauty and historical monuments, and even better known for its wines and olive oils. He has thus developed a fine, sensitive palate for Italian food and a nose for good wine. Not surprisingly, Roberto knew that he wanted to be a chef from age seven. Whenever his mother was busy, he would volunteer to be resident chef and his siblings would then be his “patrons”. He went on to a culinary institute when he grew up and first became a chef in his hometown in 1985. Living in such a city also exposed him to tourists of different ethnicities and nationalities, which fuelled his desire to explore other countries. “I was excited and impatient. Brescia is beautiful, but I wanted to see the world,” Roberto reminisces. “Once I started travelling, I saw no reason to stop.”
successful Garibaldi Italian Restaurant & Bar here in 2003. Garibaldi has since cinched numerous awards including the Tripadvisor Certificate of Excellence 2013 and The Miele Guide World Gourmet Summit Awards of Excellence for several years, placing it among the top ranks of the country’s best restaurants. The passionate chef had also set up several other successful restaurants including joint ventures after Garibaldi, but has since divested because he prefers to spend his time in the kitchen than outside it. His latest baby is a casual outlet called Re:Fresh, serving “pizza al taglio” (meaning by the slice for take-away, just like how it is commonly served in Italy), salads,
Roberto’s open secret is the traditional Italian ingredients that he uses to infuse the “flavours of home”, after having picked each one carefully. The tastes that eventually excite the taste buds are the outcomes of relentless modifications to bring out the finest in the dishes. Roberto also takes great care of his customers, interacting often with them to know more about them and their opinions of his dishes. This belief in the “human touch” is partly what makes Roberto actively reach out to the needy. And he does it with what he does best: cooking. Oppposite Chef Roberto Galetti has been serving up delicious food to his own family since he was seven. This page Roberto’s newest baby Re:fresh serves up ingenious pizza flavours with a gourmet touch.
Roberto left Italy in 1991, and his first stop was the Hyde Park Hotel, London, where he became Chef de Partie. Subsequently, he moved up the culinary ladder at top-notch restaurants worldwide, including Bice Restaurant in Argentina and Japan before being posted to its branch in Singapore in 1999. Roberto’s boyish good looks and humble mannerism belie his success. With 16 years’ of experience under his chef’s hat, Roberto set up the hugely
fresh juices and coffee. Simple concept aside, the flavours are ingenious and epicurean. They take inspirations from all-time favourites such as English Breakfast, which comprises beef bacon, scrambled eggs and mushrooms on tomato sauce; Parmigiana, comprising grilled eggplant, extra mozzarella cheese and ricotta cheese; and Carbonara, with braised onions, beef bacon and scrambled eggs. Also set along Purvis Street where Garibaldi is located, this new gourmet pizzeria looks set to woo a crowd.
Roberto whips up exquisite fundraiser meals. Once, he prepared a scrumptious BBQ treat for children of the Children’s Aid Society to experience a gourmet feast, rather than just be recipients of funds. And Roberto remains an avid traveller till today, setting up restaurants across Asia. But most of all, he loves jetting back to his hometown, where he gets to visit his parents. He jokes, “An Italian cooking Italian dishes should at least return to Italy every once in awhile.” +

DISKLAVIER POWER Sit back and relax. Listen to the real sound of piano anytime, anywhere.
A finely built instrument pleases a musician both aurally and visibly. As much as an exquisite piano should bring joy to the ears of both players and audiences, likewise should its aesthetics be attentive to both beauty and detail. The pinnacle of Yamaha craftsmanship, the Disklavier series heralds a new dawn for musical instruments. Functioning far beyond the capabilities of the traditional piano, the Disklavier invites a universe of music into one’s home with its unique ability to channel music from the Internet and from CDs. Also bolstered by an expansive library of music available on DisklavierRadio, the Disklavier series of pianos both plays and streams music with an echelon of clarity that takes nothing away from the music source.
Able to be controlled by remote from a distance, the Disklavier family is also Apple gadget friendly. Besides skipping and choosing tracks, starting and stopping, iPhones, iPods and iPads can also command the Disklavier to transpose the key of a song, make a new recording or even tweak the tempo of a track. An unprecedented entertainment hub that can play music from USB drives as well as store hundreds of hours of music, the Disklavier pianos sing with a crisp clarity can be credited to a cutting-edge built-in amplifier speaker system.
The Yamaha Disklavier instruments fill one’s living space with crystal clear music, even when a pianist isn’t present.
Dedicated to designing pianos that resonate with the pianist, Yamaha incorporated structural improvements into the CX series models, such as the DC3XE3, ensuring deep reverberation and instruments that truly ‘sing’. Durability and excellent resonance too are qualities that Yamaha holds dear for compact baby grand models such as DGC1E3 and DGB1KE3, which are perfect for any room. Upright disklaviers, models DU1E3 and DYUS1E3 are also available. + For more information, please visit 68 Orchard Road #06-01 Plaza Singapura IMAGES COURTESY OF YAMAHA | WRITTEN BY ANDRE FROIS

Acclaimed front-runner Natuzzi’s endeavour at Salone Internazionale del Mobile 2014 was a memorable one that reflected the brand’s affinity for irony. Natuzzi’s emphatic creations were themed on day and night and toned likewise with this as their inspiration, as well as with the emotions that sunup and sundown evoke. Nonetheless, these contradiction-loving pieces were hailed upon their recent debut, for turning living spaces into quarters that encouraged creativity, and most importantly, supplied a recharging energy of homeliness and tranquility. Made in Italy to the distinctive standards that the 55-year-strong company strictly enforces, Natuzzi’s new offerings came in great diversity. The extremely popular living room designer label displayed its prowess with the bedroom too, via six eclectic beds, swaddled in highgrade linen, alongside a foray of eight new customisable sofa sets and two handsome armchairs. A noteworthy collection in collaboration with lauded Italian design collective Studio Memo, pieces like the lengthy Dorian sofa display classic Italian attention to detail. A
closer look at this modular-themed piece reveals the stunning details of this 76 x 250 x 327cm piece. The quilting of its backrest cushions and arms that feature delicate raised stitching help its gentle design to further meld into a variety of different contemporary settings, while a vast array of elegant options is presented to the styleconscious home owner. The Long Beach sofa employs a sleek and pristine silhouette to appeal to the discerning home owner. This plush creation stretches out over a measurement of 75 x 97 x 230cm and is designed to embrace its sitters in elegant comfort. Design maven Claudio Bellini of Studio Memo applies his golden touch to collaborative efforts such as the Piuma, whose headboard is shaped like two pillows. Surrounded by detailing in leather and fabric, this piece conveys Bellini’s imaginative interpretation of a floating bed. “As for the lifestyles of Natuzzi’s youthful fans as well as the international market, I’m trying to render people’s wishes of living with more lighthearted home objects. hidden movements, a sort of playground, a friend that breathes the family mood with you, which moulds and changes its mood,” Bellini, a collaborator with Italian design houses like Artemide, Driade, Fiam and Vitra, was noted saying shortly before embarking on this 2014 collection. “I don’t like working alone; being shut in my office. Designing in detail an object to be proposed and then carried out, I believe the intriguing parts of our profession, and that which gives the best results, is to establish with an R&D team from the company I am working with a great harmony.” The Piuma arrives in the same size options as the Onda, 160 x 200cm to 193 x 203cm, which is also conceptualised by the innovative Bellini. The aesthetics of its top surface and headboard are soft, while its earth-toned base conveys a sense of warmth, which can optionally be turned into a concealed storage compartment.
Adopting this range of sizes too is the strikingly shaped Dolcevita. An understated conversation piece, the serene Dolcevita features square and diamondshaped pillows and metal-polished wooden feet, as well as a king-sized headboard with a meticulously finished capitonné. Arguably the most captivating piece by Natuzzi and Studio Memo, this exquisitely made home accessory nestles one in all-round comfort, nevertheless with a strong retention of alluring classicism. + Da Vinci Home Collection 191 Upper Bukit Timah Road Tel: +65 6468 6333 www.davinciasia.com

Leading the modernist movement in Italian furnishing is Cattelan Italia. The respected label champions caring attention to detail, traditional craftsmanship as well as gently nuanced and unostentatious style, which have always been indispensible parts of Italian workmanship’s DNA. The Cattelan Italia aficionado is neither an outright statement-maker, nor is he or she a conservative. Rather, the Cattelan Italia fan is always open to the ideas that the brand’s reinterpretations peddle, and always expectant of the comfort and sleek elegance that Cattelan Italia will never compromise on. The Skorpio collection, for example, is perfect for anyone who desires a round table. However, not just a round table, the Skorpio round is a fantastic Canaletto walnut or burned oak finish upon signature Andrea Lucatellostyled legs. Sculpted by veteran craftsmen, in the stringent code of Italian craftsmanship, this geometric base maybe either transparent varnished metal base, white, black or graphite embossed lacquered steel, while an aesthetic innovation of a central swivelling tray in white, black or graphite may be added to adorn its center. Another notable debutant amongst Cattelan Italia’s new offerings is its Carioca table. Named after the affectionate nickname for the inhabitants of Rio de Janeiro, its lively circles of solid Canaletto walnut wood channel the vivaciousness of the people to whom it is dedicated. Upon this sturdy base, a 15mm clear glass or extra clear bevelled glass may be perched.
One also has the option of a 3m long table employing two wood bases, with a rectangular glass top or a rounded rectangular one. In the vein of understated style, the Elvis Wood and Elvis Wood Drive pieces represent the less whimsical end of Cattelan Italia’s expansive design spectrum. A white or graphite embossed lacquered steel or in stainless steel base holds up the Elvis Wood table, which is finely finished in Canaletto walnut, burned oak or natural oak. This sophisticated silhouette arguably stands for Italian design’s eternal grace, though its table top can nonetheless be optionally fashioned in a regular or irregular rectangle shape. These tables, which offer the option of lift-up wing ends for increased length, are recommended to be embellished by other new Cattelan Italia creations like the Medusa borosilicate transparent ceiling lamps, floor lamps and table lamps, as well as the Arcadia chairs, which are meticulously fashioned from natural beech, Canaletto walnut or wenghè, and complemented with Italian leather or fabric, and are customisable to desired sizes. The Cattelan Italia legacy is based on highly customisable options, as collections like the Bora Bora Bistrot demonstrate. Sporting an uncanny shape that might evoke mushrooms, this series of tables allow one to choose from several types of tops, depending on the personal preferences of the individual. Available in matt white or graphite, not only does this contemporary table come in square or
round shapes, one may also opt for an oak tree trunk top, which places a preserved cross-section of an oak tree trunk upon the Bora Bora Bistrot table’s curvaceous base. True to the furniture company’s dedication to bespoke, Cattelan Italia proudly proclaims that no two oak tree trunk top Bora Bora Bistrot tables are alike, as no two oak trees are. + XZQT Home 8 Pandan Crescent #01-05 (Along West Coast Highway) Singapore 128464 Tel: +65 6774 8031 XZQT Studio 1 Kaki Bukit Road 1 #01-19/20 Enterprise 1 Singapore 415934 Tel: +65 6749 0813 Calligaris by XZQT 3 Temasek Boulevard #02-405/406 Suntec City Singapore 038983 Tel +65 6734 0290 Page 63 Hoops carved from sturdy wood give the Carioca table a uniquely whimsical personality. UNORTHODOX OPULENCE

Largely inspired by the romance of Venice, gorgeous murals and vibrant carpets with intricate details bring life into this home.
With a design philosophy that caters to the approach of interior as art, Evelina Hu of The Plush is part of the creative interior design team that is responsible for many an elaborate project. On a picturesque hillside, the building was one that she and her team were familiar with, having done the first unit on the same floor. Having bought the apartment next door, the owners decided to engage them again for the second time to revamp their apartment.
Overlooking the turf club, the view boasts a breathtaking skyline and unobstructed panoramas, which prompted the design decision to be made to capitalize on the location. Since the idea was to transform the unit into a massive en-suite bedroom, Chief designer Alvin Felipe was on task with Evelina, chose vivid greens and opulent purples to evoke a young, classic vibe with an Italian style. THE DAWNING OF AN ERA Channeling the magic of Venice, Evelina and team laid down an intricate marble mosaic and carved out the flat ceiling into a half-round dome complete with a twinkling Swarovski light, effectively sprucing up the otherwise dull lift lobby. Vivid murals were painted onto the doors and ceilings, bringing you into the foyer, where baby cherubs dance about the clouds amidst antique mirrors and padded walls. PRAY, EAT, LOVE As they knew the owners to be religious, the designers set about to incorporate an altar room with a mural of angels standing vigil, adjacent to a marble floor accented with a custom made, Italian carpet from Pierre Frey. Comprising carefully stained glass and elegantly veined grey marble, the altar table is a work of art, complete only with a glass kneeler that was flown in from Italy. THE MINUTIAE For the sleeping and seating area, Evelina and team put a lot of thought into making it a traditionally classic concept with a twist; the sofas were carefully selected to adopt modern lines instead of the usual, classic curves and the wallpapers were chosen from the Designer’s Guild, the trend-setter in modern, classic concepts. Similar to the altar room, the bedroom’s vivid carpets were also customised and made in France by Pierre Frey with detailed instructions from the team on the look and feel. The long sofas were customised in Singapore using Lalique crystal details and fine velvet with patterns, also from Pierre Frey and the Designer’s Guild Since the structure of the building is such that is supported by beams with grid details, the team made full use of the grid and created a pattern around it. Houles trimmings laced the curtains and sofas, the same type of trimmings that are found in palaces around the world. SONG OF LOVE Given that there was to be a Karaoke system installed, the ceiling was treated with soundproofing and walls cladded with fabric. Two sets of speakers were installed, cleverly hidden in the customised faux fireplace. Exquisite Italian-ordered armchairs flank the fireplace and accompany the limited edition Lalique coffee table, which centers the room. DREAM A LITTLE DREAM To take full advantage of the magnificent view, the main bedroom boasts an indulgently customised 3-meter long bed and padded TV console that can be hidden when not in use and lifted up when needed with a remote control. Again, the ceiling was carefully soundproofed alongside luxuriously cladded walls. Quaint side lamps from Baccarat lend a cosy glow, accentuating the little luxurious details of the room.
Page 76 Dangling chandeliers usher you into the main living space, while walls are padded with decadent fabric.
Page 77 Lush interiors were made sleeker and more vibrant by the choice of vivid colours and upholstery.
Opposite Carpet-like mosaic tiles add extra eloquence to the design, while the ceiling brings to mind a star-lit sky.
FASHIONING SUCCESS Catering to 500-800 pairs of shoes and hundreds of handbags, the gilded glass storage was made in mind with the owner’s love for luxury Hermés bags, with some even studded with diamonds. The whole enclosure is cleverly concealed in the passageway, intentionally closer to the entrance for ease of use. Designed to accommodate 2,000 clothes, the electronic hanging space was built within a huge room, with separate storages for sunglasses, scarves and accessories. Softly lit with Bacarrat lights, the vanity area is complemented with a detailed ivory Meroni dresser from Italy that contrasts with the plush wine-red carpet with flowing floral motifs. To give the illusion of height, a mural was painted on the ceiling, perfectly synergising with the lights of the room. SOAK UP THE STARS For the cherry on top, Evelina decided on a shoeshaped bathtub, which she personally tested out for comfort. To accent the grand, detailed bathtub, a colourful carpet-like marble mosaic decorates the floor, while the walls are adorned with a mosaic that forms the shape of birds, with two of them intentionally coloured red, a symbol of the loving couple of the house. The ceiling was painted a dusk shade complete with fibre-optic lights to mimic the starry night sky. Separating the dry and the wet areas, the water closet is on the far end, accompanied by two vanity counters furnished with red and gold glass tiles. + The Plush Pte Ltd 100 Pasir Panjang Road #06-04 Singapore 118518 Tel: +65 6220 4535 www.theplush.com.sg

Peak Of Antiquity True antiquarians will rejoice at the tenth edition of Fine Art Asia, a leading international fine art fair in Hong Kong. From 4 – 7 October at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, Fine Art Asia 2014 will once again host Rossi & Rossi (London & Hong Kong), amongst 100 of the world’s most renowned galleries. JOURNEY BACK IN TIME “As always, we will try and bring the very best material we can find. Among the highlights, there will be a group of exquisite Tibetan book-covers from the 12th to 15th century, and a magnificent and monumental standing stone Buddha from Eastern India dating from the 10th century,” says owner and director of Rossi & Rossi, Fabio Rossi. Over the last thirty years, Rossi & Rossi has specialised in classical works of art from India and the Himalayan region, as well as early Chinese and Central Asian textiles and contemporary Asian art. The illustrious international gallery was founded in 1985 by Fabio’s mother, Anna Maria Rossi, who has some 40 years of experience in the field of Asian art.
Having won international acclaim for its wide array of museum-quality antiques over the years, Fine Art Asia 2014 returns to feature a superb scope of ancient and rare collectibles – including that of its core exhibitor, Rossi & Rossi.
Top, clockwise from left A 14th Century Tibetan Gilt Brass Buddha Shakyamuni, Rossi & Rossi (London, Hong Kong); 2014 will mark the 10th edition of Fine Art Asia; Fabio Rossi (left) and his mother, Anna Maria Rossi (right)
COMING HOME TO ART Rossi & Rossi has notably exhibited with Fine Art Asia every year without fail, starting from the fair’s inception in 2006. “I had a feeling that the (art) market and its audience in the region were ready for a good fair,” explains Fabio. He also attributes the enthusiasm and vision of Andy Hei, co-chairman and director of Fine Art Asia, as a determining factor for his loyal support of the event. “The fair has evolved greatly in terms of size, quality, attendance and the diversity of exhibits. Every edition has been successful for us both in the terms of making sales and meeting new clients,” he adds.
A PRICELESS EXPERIENCE Fine Art Asia is recognised as the only fair to showcase a wide range of collectible fine art, ranging from ancient to contemporary, from both Asia and the West. Besides contemporary, modern and impressionist art alongside fine art jewellery, silver and timepieces, on display will also be ancient Himalayan bronzes, rare Persian antiquities, Chinese ceramics, antique furniture and decorative arts. + www.fineartasia.com IMAGES COURTESY OF FINE ART ASIA | WRITTEN BY MICHELLE ZHU
