A Museum-Like Flagship Store
Photos : Nanne Springer
The daring furniture manufacturer Montauk Sofa has undertaken to renovate an old decrepit building on Saint-Laurent Boulevard in order to set up its Montreal flagship store and showroom. The result wows the jury and wins the award of the year in interior design.
JURY’S KUDO “The space’s natural light is truly wonderful. Transparent surfaces allow the light to further penetrate the space in a clean and uncomplicated way. The landscaping intervention is remarkable in this context of urban rebirth. Bravo„
GREENERY DEFINES THE PROJECT The fundamental element of this renovation was the creation of an emblematic urban garden which serves both as an urban amenity green space, and as a symbolic threshold for the exhibition hall. BEHIND THE FACADE Behind an old facade on a very lively artery, this garden surprises and becomes a backdrop for elegant exhibition rooms where textured materials, smooth surfaces and the play of light combine and sculpt shapes as much as spaces. A BRAND NEW WORLD The ambient design becomes a gateway to a completely reinvented space, whose refined minimalism highlights the high-end furniture that the brand manufactures and markets. Sumptuous grays and off-whites rock the customer and match the downy comfort and rare woods of the furniture offered. WIDE OPEN SPACES The gigantic project signed by Colhmeyer Architecture includes this 1,100-square-foot urban garden, a 12,800-square-foot showroom and a 1,200-squarefoot office on the fourth floor. And yet, there is an intimate, contemporary and subtly perfected atmosphere, which displays an adaptive reuse both in its renovation and in its design. Well done!

Downtown AI Hub
Wishing to increase its presence in Montreal, the artificial intelligence firm Behavox chose to settle on the upper floors of Maison Manuvie in the heart of downtown Montreal, seduced by the breathtaking views they offer.
A MIX OF FUNCTIONS Some 275 employees being called upon to invest the premises, one of the challenges consisted in designing several closed spaces in order to allow team meetings and solo moments of concentration. That being said, the project strikes the imagination with the fluidity of the open spaces and the ambient light. A UNIVERSAL WORKPLACE Sports areas, a cafeteria or meeting rooms are added to this particularly versatile work environment. A CENTRAL HUB An opening in the floor, facilitating access from one floor to another, serves as a central hub that promotes connection between employees. It offers a striking view of the heart of the city. A magnificent staircase is profiled around this axis and connects the firm’s two floors. It also allows the occupants to stroll around a tree placed at its feet. A SYMBOLIC TREE A pretty little tree appears in the interior design concept imagined by A+ gestion de conception et construction & ISSADESIGN. It represents the founder’s trademark, wanting to stage a strong symbol illustrating the relationship between knowledge and ascension. The project designers therefore took into account the presence of the tree in order to organize the heart of this radioconcentric space. It unfolds around a large natural garden which is transformed into a collaborative bench promoting contemplation.

Japanese and Memphis Group Ideas
Photos : Ulysse Lemerisse
This astonishing project features a traditional Montreal triplex reconstructed to better define the space and infuse it with a luminosity that makes daily life more fluid. Portrait of a refined place that celebrates intimacy.
HONOR TO CABINETRY Taking advantage of this reconfiguration, a great gesture of cabinetmaking features cherry wood cabinets and shelves that spread across the living room, the dining room and the kitchen and optimize storage. NOBILITY TO MATERIALS Noble materials such as wood, stone and ceramic enhance the uncluttered spaces that allow light to reveal the contrasts staged by the interior design choices. An imposing granite island serves as a counter and dining area in a kitchen that opens onto the dining room.
DIVIDED TO MAXIMIZE With only one thousand square feet to set up spaces favoring the most common activities of the household, the designers of La Firme - Design & Construction chose to transform a large room into two bedrooms for the children and a Japanese vestibule of genkan type where guests may take off their shoes and slip into relaxation mode.
VISUAL & PLEASANT GLANCES The intimate bathroom features ta geometric patterned walk-in shower ceramic tile that is more than pleasing to the eye. As per the pharmacy unit, it glances retro-futuristically to the Memphis Group’s approach back in the 1980s by displaying an elegant orange halo that contrasts the room’s green furniture.

Sciences To Rally Around
Université de Montréal’s new MIL Campus Science Complex is home to the chemistry, physics, geography and biology departments.
REASSIGNING AN OLD YARD It sits on the site of the former Outremont marshaling yard and acts as a major contributor to the revitalization of an entire city sector. RESTORING LINKS The new Science Complex reestablishes the links between two of the city’s boroughs by creating its Blue Promenade. Creating a passageway, the latter connects the districts on each side of the railway tracks, the city green spaces and public parks as well as the university’s new pavilions. DESIRED AMPLITUDE Wishing to meet the needs of some 2,400 people who visit the complex daily, the consortium made up of Menkès Shooner Dagenais Letourneux Architectes, Lemay and NFOE Architectes placed the user at the center of decision-making.
This approach allowed the composition of stimulating, flexible and modular spaces that unfold around a library connecting the two poles. Laid along landscaped courtyards, the library reveals itself on multiple levels, from the ground floor to the basement, under the blue promenade. THE UNIFYING ATRIUM In the science hub, the functions are organized on either side of the atrium at the heart of the building. In the education hub, student cafés, set up in converted marshaling yard containers, and various meeting places sit alongside the science library, most visible from passing traffic.

California Sun & Finance Fun
Establishing its headquarters atop the San Francisco city skyline, a well-established investment firm wanted to move into a sleek workspace that would echo the company’s ideals and propel it into the 21st century.
A SPECTACULAR BACKGROUND Against a backdrop of blue skies and spectacular views, this new space is fashioned from an elegant and timeless palette of natural materials, such as wood in the foreground. IF YOU’RE GOING TO SAN FRANCISCO Sculptural furniture and an impeccably curated gallery of geographical and historical maps of San Francisco define the unique experience that reflects the company’s heritage. REVOLUTIONARY Through the visioning process, the team at Mark Cavagnero Associates moved away from traditional workplace planning where private offices line perimeter windows and monopolize sunlight and city views. By contrast, in a more democratic ideal, circulation areas line the space’s perimeter while low-iron-glass-framed private offices sit in the center, creating an unobstructed view while attenuating the contribution of solar heat and glare on actual workstations. A GRAIN OF HUMOR IN FINANCE Here, the workspace is thoughtfully arranged to lighten up the occupants’ days. The offices showcase a state-ofthe-art fitness center, two kitchens and a common area to host philanthropic events. As for its round-curved furniture, what a clever grain of humor that recalls the fluctuating curves of financial investments!

Southwest of Mexico City is the Monte Sinai School, a 60-some-year-old institution that educates boys through their grade and high school years. The design of a digital media library sprang from identifying an underutilized school space.
NEW PERSPECTIVES To rally everyone, the new media library has a large staircase which also serves as a meeting space. It dialogues with the void by spreading out in a large double height that dominates the space. The e f fe c t i s a s p a c e s c a l e th a t appears more welcoming and invites diversity. KIDDY-SCALED DESIGN In the children’s media library, the furniture was specially designed for the scale and the use of the children of the school. Elsewhere, the media library displays its great height with an aesthetic industrial-looking ceiling that creates a peculiar rhythm. The library’s furniture, walls and floors are bathed in a bright yellow to let the rays of education shine in!
EUREKA! The new classroom designed by MAYER HASBANI is deployed in the “Makerspace” format. It is an educational laboratory that allows students to explore and work with all kinds of tools adapted to various age groups and interests. Glass walls allow passing students and teachers to observe the learning process at play. A SYMPHONY OF COLORS Since the target audience here is none other than young people and children, color is cheerfully used with audacity. The result is a professional but, oh, how joyful space!

A Nanjing Sales Office Goes Poetic SYMBOLICALLY MEANINGFUL The gray marble floors add robustness and grandeur to the experience. The imposing walls feature an arching tendency that makes the space flow more smoothly. It reminds us of the Qinhuai River’s winding shape as it flows through the center of Nanjing. It just happens to be dubbed “the Mother River of Nanjing”. The city’s “blood of life”.
EDGES & SPHERES Soft and natural lines are applied to enhance the overall interior finish and bring out the artistic sense of traditional culture. Circular strips of light were embedded in the ceiling of the sales offices in order to breathe lightness into everything. A round ceiling chandelier hangs above the large sales table. Its light protrudes outwards like that of the sun that shines on the earth above the river crossing the cumulus and instilling a strong and promising feeling of vitality.
Presented in a modern minimalist style, this sales office in the capital of Jiangsu Province is of pure white with the limits imposed by black. The whole thing creates the illusion of a spatial dimension transformation.
SILENCE IS GOLDEN Note the ornaments that hold a place of choice in Zhejiang Dairui Soft Decoration Design’s conception. This showcases a respect of Nanjing’s artistic universe, letting it express itself in golden silence. A BEWITCHING EFFECT Here and there, spherical decorations give the customer the illusion of spatiotemporal transformation. At the top of the ceiling, a quasi-lunar illumination adds to the fantasy.

Reigning over the 34th and 35th floors of the iconic 1000 De La Gauchetière in Montreal, Fednav’s impressive new offices, both stimulating and functional, encourage interaction and teamwork.
FOLLOW THE GUIDE Menkès Shooner Dagenais LeTourneux Architectes were largely inspired by the vocation of the company. Thus, the interior design evokes maritime transport and pay homage to the company’s ships that navigate the St. Lawrence River before sailing the seas. ECOSYSTEM & AMAZEMENT Enabling the company to adapt to the evolution of the market and practices and to its future, while promoting the well-being of its 225 employees, the new workspaces create an ecosystem. The backdrop of choice? The St. Lawrence Seaway. MARINE METAPHORS Marine metaphors such as partitions shaped like the hulls of a boat, curves here and there that are reminiscent of a ship cutting through the water and these tones of navy blue that embellish the space give the office space a strong and unique identity. PATHWAYS & INTERACTIONS Welcoming pathways spread over both floors. Wide, lively corridors where there is a judicious choice of furniture, finishes and colors as well as an abundance of light, orchestrate a work environment that reflects the brand image and values common to the company and the talents that make it up. The pursuit of innovation and the respect of the Chanel house heritage dictated the approach for this new headquarters inspired by the original Chanel store, on Rue Cambon, in Paris, yet translated to the uniqueness of its Australian context and landscape.
A COUTURIER’S APPROACH GroupGSA and Chanel approached the challenge as an atelier would a garment, embracing the strong lines and renowned silhouettes of the brand. FROM PARIS TO SYDNEY The Parisian home concept was stripped back and nuances that could be reflective of the Australian vernacular were pinpointed. Nature, subtlety, balance and symbolism became the core drivers for this new imagined home. The result achieved is a seductive blend of luxurious Chanel ambience with a transparent and connected workplace that robustly supports the current and anticipated needs of the business. A STAIRCASE TO COCO’S LEGACY Every element of the two-floor workspace, connected by a dramatic spiral staircase, evokes a subtle but immediate visual connection to the luxury brand. The spiral staircase acts as the focal point and clever nod to the famous staircases Coco Chanel would ascend and descend daily, in Paris. AUSTRALIAN BEAUTY & NATURE An undulating, double height feature wall encapsulates this spiral staircase, reminiscent of the fall of a woman’s garment or dress, and also reflective of the Australian love of water and nature. Integrated light cascades between its plaster ridges, resembling the rhythm created by faceted mirrors in the original stair. Exquisite!

Living Inseparably from Nature
Photos : Design Apartment
Imagine a serene living environment in the bustling Chinese city of Yu Shan, enjoying the closeness to the mountains and wild rocky shores. An unbeatable mix.
THE SHELL Let’s look at the villas’ outer shells. Here, DESIGN APARTMENT bet on the use of natural materials to soften the cold impression of the structures’ reinforced concrete. The result is a living space inseparable from its surrounding nature. A BRILLIANT LOOK Let us now admire the lines that outline the facade, relieved of the rigidity which is normally provided by the use of traditional lines. The silhouettes mimic the soft and light curve of a net, elongated by light and shadows. The approach made it possible to emphasize the building’s lines and to extend the visual field width thanks to the use of curved surfaces. THE CORE At the heart of each villa, the first floor has a common space area, bathed in sunlight and surrounded by a three-sided courtyard. Light and shadow follow one another, inside and outside, constantly evolving in more than lively ways. The style of the interior decoration also seems to be inspired by nature and allows the occupants, or should we say, the guests, to reach out to the outside world. EVERYDAY SCENES Scenes of daily life weave their way between moments spent in the kitchen or those devoted to relaxation.

Simply & Exquisitely Breathtaking
The Huanghe Song Theater is located near the Yellow River, the cradle of Chinese civilization. All the spaces are declined in white and yellow, highlighting the deep origin of the regional culture. Its shape is like the vortex of this important river that flows nearby.
ARCHITECTURE, ECOLOGY & CULTURE Here, architecture meets ecology and culture exquisitely. With regard to environmental protection, all stages of the project were coupled with low-carbon actions. A TORRENT The entrance space reminds us of “water from the sky”. A breaking wave spreads from the top of the hall and adorns the decorative column. This shape symbolizes the culture of the central plains that border the Yellow River, a most important page in Chinese cultural history. THE RHYTHM OF THE RIVER Pursuing its concept in the theatre’s interior design, GOLD MANTIS studied the ritual and musical culture established in the heart of the central plains. Inspired by ancient music, they saw to translate the music into the purity of the theatre spaces in a breathtakingly modern way. AMAZING GRACE The artistic texture of the spaces is unquestionable. It is revealed in the perfection of the details, all more ingenious than the other. Let’s not forget that the Song Dynasty represents a rich period in China’s cultural history across all fields. The multiple columns echo this heritage with mind-blowing harmony and amazing grace.

Humaniti for Humanity
Inspired by humanity and the beauty of nature, Montreal’s Hotel Humaniti offer a guest experience that is both intriguing and yet relatable. Its interior designs are freeflowing, seamlessly connected and wonderfully centered.
A COLORFUL EXPERIENCE The common spaces designed by Lemay + Escobar feature a feel-good color palate of custom furniture pieces and a curated selection of local artwork that, seen from the outside, echo brilliantly with Place Jean-Paul Riopelle’s monumental artwork. LIVING WELL, BEING WELL & FEELING WELL Drawing on a palette of authentic and inspired materials, marble floors and walls, rich hardwood inserts, Venetian plaster ceilings and stone accents bring quality and craftsmanship to the fore to create harmoniously balanced spaces that reflect Humaniti’s holistic vision of living well, being well and feeling well. A COLORFUL LULLABY The guest room color palate is primarily comprised of rich yellows and deep teal, supported by a muted palette of wood, white and black accents. Yellow, perhaps the most energetic of the warm colors, evokes happiness, spontaneity, laughter, hope and sunshine! Teal instills restfulness, reflectiveness and calm. Bliss! AUDACITY & HARMONY Here, the place given to natural and noble materials, unexpected colored accents and bespoke works of art and bold patterns, combined with cutting-edge technology and adaptability to the human experience, gives visitors the mission-accomplished feeling to be both stimulated and in tune with their environment. Well done!

REMEMBRANCE, WARNING, UNDERSTANDING & HOPE Concept and exhibition designers Tinker imagineers and National Monument Kamp Amersfoort worked closely to create a new museum experience in which the history becomes palpable and the oppression, injustice and fear are made tangible. A DESCENT INTO THE PAST Visitors descend and enter an immense and modestly furnished room, located beneath the former camp. The past is brought back to life through a play on contrasts, a use of sober materials and original elements.

The National Monument Kamp Amersfoort remembers the 37,000 lost souls that were Nazi-held there from 1941 to 1945. It tells a story that touches on universal themes still relevant today.
DARK VS. LIGHT, BLACK VS. WHITE From being seen and treated as numbers, the prisoners regain their names and faces through gigantic portraits printed on pillars. Their belongings are displayed in the drawers below the images, and their personal stories can, alas, be heard. Their portrait light as their drawers are open, and the contrast with the black and white portrait wall at the back of the room is striking. THEN & NOW On the back of the columns, important camp themes are listed, such as hunger, and discrimination – still quite common today. A social experiment called Right or Wrong, uses virtual reality to address current issues that take on special meaning in the context of the museum. It confronts visitors with uncomfortable dilemmas, experiments on the effects of peer pressure, authority, and trust and leaves a lasting impression to the changed souls of today.

A Spatial Poem of Romanticism
Located on the seashore in Lianyungang Bay renowned for its spectacular sunsets, sits the site to welcome the radiant real estate project RADIANCE WORLD.
MYSTERY, PURITY & TRANQUILITY The real estate project’s sales office’s design relies on the proximity and the romanticism of the sea sparkling with stars and draws inspiration from the marine world to modulate the space. Turning the mystery, purity and tranquility of the ocean into a romantic spatial poem, voluptuously and immaculately dressed in white. TO THE RHYTHM OF THE TIDE As the ebb and flow of the tide form a shallow rhythm against the shore, YONGNA SHENG mimicked the rhythm of the ocean waves by introducing significant curves into the scenery. On the ceiling and on the walls, an allegorical representation of nature and of city textures is expressed through a simple and clever design. MARINE MOODS The whale is the most mysterious and charming guest in the water world. Its joyous song resounds in the vast and magnificent ocean where an extraordinary biodiversity of life bubbles. This cetacean is found suspended from the ceiling and symbolically evolves in the various ambiances of the space, all elegantly infused with marine moods. THE RADIANT EFFECT Inspired by the sea’s beauty, vitality and plurality, the sales office tells the evolution tale of the underwater depths through to imbue its clientele with the ingenious integration of the built space to its surrounding landscape.

Waterfalls & Fashion
A visionary concept inhabits the architecture of a shopping center, the Hyundai Seoul Department Store in South Korea. It redefines the future of retail by allocating half of its surface to the emergence of public spaces.
A GREEN COURSE As the green concept extends to the environment as a whole, the building becomes more serene and conducive to memorable experiences. The journey begins with the auditory sensation of a cascading waterfall. A 12-meter-high gravity-defying sculptural fountain stands in the main atrium. ÉLÉGANCE & HAUTE COUTURE The second floor, devoted to high-end women’s fashion, is at the heart of elegance and luxury. It offers an art gallery-like space to walk around and explore. The use of soft, indirect lighting accentuates the flowing forms of the ceiling to exude an ethereal quality. STRONG SENSATIONS In contrast to the second floor, on the third floor, designers changed up the mood and invited shoppers into another world. Developing the concept of nature and the sculptural garden, creative elements composed of raw materials, such as marble, metal, and terrazzo, resonate with the unfinished ceiling. The whole emphasizes the contrast that reigns between natural materials and those of human manufacture. NEIGHBORHOOD & CULTURE In this large shopping center designed by BURDIFILEK, the worlds of art, design, nature and fashion come together to create a cultural experience where well-being is at the center of concerns. Mission accomplished!

Blue Vention Walks the Talk
AN EPIC STORY OF GROWTH In 2021 the team chose to transform, with the help of Ivy Studio, their current 14,000 square foot warehouses in Saint-Henri into workspaces. From the outset, the aesthetics of the pieces, their perforations and their signature “blue Vention” color were decisive in the design of the project.
Vention is a Montréal engineering company that has developed a custom aluminum extrusion system. In constant evolution, the need for larger offices quickly appeared.
LIKE AN ASSEMBLY LINE The offices are all painted white and have existing concrete floors covered with an epoxy sealant of the same color. In the center of it all, volumes covered with perforated blue metal sheets were placed like machines in an assembly line.
ALL IN BLUE Inside, all the finishing materials are in “Vention blue”, from the carpets to the paint on the walls. Generous bay windows offer great visibility and, when necessary, blue voile curtains make it possible to hold private events. TIME TO EAT! In the kitchen, all the tables have been designed from their blue aluminum extrusions. The table tops were covered with a navy blue smoked glass to allow the unique structure’s composition of to be seen even when seated. The entire space is greatly inspired by their products and highlights their exceptionally… blue corporate culture!

A City Duplex Finds Its Wings
The mission? To turn a city duplex into an open-plan house, from its street side to its courtyard, and from its ground floor to its first floor. The concept? To create a house made for play, both for the young and the young at heart!
THAT’S NOT ALL! Here, the concept was to insert modern elements while preserving the house’s trademark old beams and brick walls. Indee Design thus imagined the central space of the house in the image of Moroccan riads where all the bedrooms and living rooms radiate around an open courtyard. WHIZZING DOWN THE SLIDE Here and there, skylights bring the sun rays into the house while catamaran nets and a perfor-
ated steel floor allow light to stream naturally from top to bottom. The space is punctuated by a slide, a climbing wall, a few luscious swings, a reading corner, hammocks suspended in catamaran nets, a giant wooden bench and more… all design for play and enjoyment. LIGHT ENCHANTS, ATTRACTS AND ILLUMINATES Light crosses the space from one end to the other and gives a second reading to living spaces as day time changes. A second
skylight, located above the perforated steel landing, crosses all the steel meshes of the floors, staircase and structure. NAVY & BLACK Navy blue elements stand out and blend with the predominantly black fixtures. Add natural light and light wooden accents, audacity, playfulness and geometry… and the effect is quite brilliant!

Sumptuous Slate Stone
Sumptuous, this country house is a place that encourages both rest and winter sports! Located on the edge of the Mont Bromont ski slopes, it sits in perfect harmony with its surrounding wilderness.
AN AMAZINGLY WISE MARRIAGE In order to tie in with nature, the materials are inspired by the elements of the site. Thus, on the team’s very first walk on the premises, the discovery of slate stone inspired floor coverings. This same stone was applied in various places both inside and outside the house. Last but not least, it also inspired the blue tint of the interior doors. THE OWNERS’ PASSIONS Light and openwork lampshades, sometimes in soft colors, sometimes in velvety black, a noble and imposing wine cellar and a silver-grey fireplace, the brilliant waltz of all these thoughtful details highlights the passions of the happy and passionate occupants in an amazingly unique way.
A SMART MUSEUM-LIKE CONCEPT The architectural concept put forward by Daoust Design is the result of a visit to Québec City’s Fine Arts Museum in which each exhibition hall creates a visible imprint on its neighboring space that invites and encourages visitors to move from one space to the other. AN INTIMATE RELATIONSHIP All well enclosed behind beautifully detailed wood framing French doors, each room remains intimately connected to the next through a brilliant treatment of floor materials and wall coverings. This is how the roughfinish cedar shingles in the kitchen appeared, acting as a mirror to the adjoining veranda.

An Eye-Catching Home Office Cocoon
The residential ground floor revival project included the renovation of a home office. The order was for a timeless and chic home and an office at home, apart from the rest.
INTERESTING PARAMETERS The space imagined by Entre Quatre Murs is intended to be stripped down, in order to keep distractions away and leave room for calm. The desire to place the office facing a window also played an important role in the space planning. Indeed, this need dictated a desire for contemplation. Here, the choice of furniture also impacts the softness and elegance felt all around. A SKILLFUL DUALITY With this desire to keep a space free of distraction, a large piece of cabinetry surrounds the office area, thus offering all the convenience of storage nearby. An intriguing duality between the warmth of the wood and the immaculate white cabinets is felt.
BOOST OF CLARITY In order to restore a boost of clarity and luminosity to the space, separations created by glass doors offer a clearer field of vision and let the natural light filter in. Offering the occupant a feeling of intimacy, the office window is covered with a pale solar canvas that lets in light, with a shadow of intimacy. HARMONY & DETACHMENT Although secluded from the rest of the living spaces, this home office offers the keys to working comfort while harmonizing with the timelessness of the home.

Black is the New Black
Striving on its games’ successes, Fika Productions wished to grow and acquire a new workspace in Québec City. Formerly owned by a geology firm, these offices did not reflect the spirit of conviviality that emanates from the young video game agency.
EXPERTS TO THE RESCUE The start-up architecture firm specialized in digital design Atelier mock/up developed a workspace that reflects the entrepreneurial spirit, by computer coding a set of parameters that generate the variations of the project.
INSPIRED BY THEIR OWN GAME Taking advantage of the aesthetics of a game made by the creative firm, the interior design was conceived around this concept. Flows and movement are therefore created by a set of variations of lines with low rhythmic and wavy projections.
A PARAMETRIC DESIGN Thanks to a parametric design and its digital manufacturing tools, the talents created a new spatial configuration, while considering acoustic issues. The result is an aesthetic inspired by the fika-brand universe and the reality of Daniel, the lead game developer, who uses a wheelchair to roam around.
AN IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCE Thus, all the pieces of furniture blend harmoniously into the layout so that all employees, without distinction, can enjoy an immersive, total and friendly experience. Add a Scandinavian-style café space, mineral notes and multiple velvety blacks and here is a unique, renewed and singular place to put creativity at work.

The Storytelling of Gastronomy

Meet “Madame Chose”. This exuberant and epicurean old dame who opens her home daily and serves guests a unique gastronomic experience is the character brilliantly brought to life in this one-of-a-kind dinning experience that sits in the heart of historic Québec City.
A LUCID DREAM Straight out of the boundless imagination of Olivier Dufour and his collaborators specialized in various creative fields, the interior design expresses a strong narrative staged right on the restaurant which creates a lively, colorful and theatrical track on which the charming Madame Chose virtually evolves. DIVING INTO THE NARRATIVE Immersive technologies and augmented scenography combine here to immerse the guest in the hostess’s domain’s different areas: her house, her backyard, her garden, her clearing, her nearby pond, her reserve and, of course, her kitchen! Everything was masterfully designed to allow this unusual encounter between the world of gastronomy and that of storytelling through means like cinema, theater and immersive experience. LET THE SHOW BEGIN! Lucid Dreams by Dufour’s talents are impressively composed of pros in the fields of design, architecture, performing arts, cinema, advertising, visual arts and multimedia. FROM NUTS TO BOLTS The multitalented team was involved in all stages of the project’s design: from the development of the original idea, to the layout of the space, the scenography and the choice of accessories, the design of the lighting, the choice of furniture and crockery and tutti quanti… from nuts to bolts!

Outremont Abby
The mandate here was to transform the annex of an ancestral Outremont residence into an airy, modern and bright space. A space originally occupied by the domain’s maids and butlers, the somewhat dark annex housed massive, yet cramped rooms. GLITTERING, SHINY, SPARKLING La Firme’s intervention favored the emergence of open areas and a reading space that evokes the deck of a transatlantic ship as well as the layout of more functional and inviting bathrooms. The configuration of the main bathroom was completely modernized. Natural light streams in from a huge skylight above a clawfoot tub. CALACATTA, ETC. Interlacing white and transparency underline this light and are embellished with touches of forest green present around the bath, the washbasin and the cast-iron radiator. Facing the sink, built-in storage serves the entire bathroom. And if the effect is resolutely contemporary, the calacatta green marble worktop as well as the wall tiles bring a classic timelessness and are a nod to the bathrooms of another era. VERTICALITY & LUMINOSITY Reconfigured and featuring a vertical window following the roof’s angle, the secondary bathroom displays several custom-made accessories, including the vanity, the steel towel rack and the worktop under the mirror. SALUTE! The whole project commands respect. That of the preservation of a rare built heritage, within which are now articulated spaces and a way of life anchored in the present time. Bravo!

To expand Unity’s offices onto the former Northern Electric Company Limited factory site and make it the platform’s one and only Québécois address, A challenge accomplished with flying colors!
A POINTE-SAINT-CHARLES FACTORY Built in several phases between 1913 and 1948, the factory housing the offices of the international leader in the field of rest-time 3D content creation and exploitation is classified amongst the Québec cultural heritage repertoire, as a local symbol of the industrial era. The site consists of several brick buildings, some of which have Art Deco-style components. CREATING PROXIMITY Orchestrated by NEUF architect(e)s, the project spreads across four floors of one of the original wings of the factory, in addition to the two floors already occupied by the company. Several challenges arose during the design process, including establishing physical links between these six floors and social links between talents. A gathering space and several multifunctional and reconfigurable rooms respond in particular to this need to create these connections. SUSTAINABLE MATERIALS Left bare, the steel and concrete structure is enhanced by natural light. Chosen for their longevity and sleek design, the covering materials combine wood and plywood, ceramic and quartz. LOCALLY INSPIRED Like its industrial district, the circulation areas are arranged according to the principle of Montreal alleys and the workstations are superimposed like duplexes or triplexes would be. Dry-Cleaning Cleverness
AN INNOVATIVE FACTORY White’s cleaning service plant sits on the island of Montréal and, thanks to the concepts put forward by Ivy Studio, reflects the brand image with its minimalist design and attention to detail. Meanwhile, a true flagship project, this first satellite counter offers a one-of-akind revolutionary offer by introducing a new typology in terms of dry-cleaning services.
A HINT OF ROMANCE Inspired by the aesthetics of Parisian apartments, the place offers a bright and classic atmosphere that is expressed in particular by the work of high moldings, sober volumes and noble materials.
NOT EASY BEING TALL The main design issue here remained the ceilings’ height. By adding a level of suspended lighting and deploying moldings at 14 feet, the space enjoys its full height while maintaining comfortable and welcoming proportions.
FRONT ROW SEATS Through the seamstress’s window, one can see the particular attention paid to the space’s organization and layout. Concealed doors and a glass opening allow customers to see right through to the clothing conveyer in movement. Seen from the outside, through the fully glazed facade, the monolithic black marble counter and the golden light fixture created by Lambert et fils certainly set the tone for a new brand image and a dry-cleaning service like no other.
The first-ever White’s dry-cleaning service counter opened on Montréal’s South Shore. Founded by two young entrepreneurs, White’s diversifies the offer in the field.

THE MIRACLE TREE These plants are grown in warm climates and do not compete with food crops so they reach impressive heights very quickly. Legend says the Maringa plant can reach six meters in four months and that it spruces every year.
Photo : Rolf
This new eyewear collection Substance by ROLF offers a timeless design and craftsmanship that showcases the power of plants. The starting point? A powder derived from a plant affectionately called Maringa.
SUSTAINABLE & ECO-RESPONSIBLE This new material is more sustainable and eco-responsible than ever, and forms the perfect basis for building a new collection of eyewear called to respond to today’s demand for more climate-friendly products. PRINT & SEE THE FUTURE Here, the lenses are printed at the same time as the frame using the impressive 3D printing technology. In addition to the screwless hinges’ high performance, glass wearers benefit from the frame’s flexible, natural and skin-friendly properties, which, point made, starts with a seed in the soil.

THE MOUNTAINS OF AUSTRIA The approach of the designers, Roland Wolf, Bernhard Wolf and Johannes Wacker of ROLF, is to combine their love of nature with timeless styles and innovative technology. He thus creates products that respect yesterday, work today and prepare for tomorrow. “Our native country of Austria and our natural alpine environment have always been an important influence”, explains the founder of the brand. The Tyrolean mountains’ organic shapes are now reflected in the Substance collection.

An Elegant Table Is a Blessing
This Danish tablesystem elegantly combines the aluminum of its under-thetabletop support beams and the solid wood of its legs.
FREE LEG-POSITIONING In the upper-end of the legs a “negative print” of the extruded beam-profile is milled out. This allows the leg to be slided horizontally onto the beam and left where wanted. When the table is standing upright, the gravity will, due to the aluminium beam’s shape, lock the legs and stabilize the exquisite construction. CUSTOM COMFORT The table’s brilliant freedom in leg-positioning gives way to a customizable approach to space and comfort. In fact, the legs may be placed where best suited to fit the chosen chairs and least intrude on the occupants’ comfort. A LIFE AFTER LIFE After its lifespan, the table easily separates into wooden parts and aluminum parts to allow full recycling. Ingenious technology meets craftsmanship and eco-responsibility in a simple, yet refined form. AS STABLE AS A PYRAMID PONTO’s pyramid-shaped legs add stability and character to the whole, which owes its name to its bridge-like appearance. Designed by Troels Grum-Schwensen, GRUMDESIGN and LAMMHULTS, here is a truly innovative and renewed interpretation of original Scandinavian functionalism.

Collection ODE
House of Rohl

Québec, Canada houseofrohl.ca
Fluidity + Geometry = Balance
The ODE collection showcases bathroom taps that stand out for the purity of their design. The collection’s harmonious design accentuates its elements’ ergonomics and functionality in elegant ways. LIKE SCULPTURES Sculptural in appearance, each element was designed almost entirely from a single block by the House of Rohl, instead of assembling disparate components. This approach made it possible to shape a unique and fluid geometry that relies on the happy combination of a circular base and a rectangular spout. The result is as pleasing to the eye as it is to the feel. And let’s not neglect its added bonus: it distinguishes itself by its ease of maintenance. A FLUID FUSION The elegant fusion between the circular base and the rectangular spout gives the fluidity and the unique profile that distinguishes this faucet from others. This new collection features a slender shape enhanced by an angled handle and highlighted by the pronounced sides of the square profile that blends subtly into the circular base. This subtlety of shape and the angularity of the handle are the main characteristics that give it all its luxury. A HARMONY OF SHAPES Here, the equipment’s functionality relies on the design’s simplicity. Here, each and every component shines both for its high level of performance and its true elegance. ODE TO MODERNITY Offered in four distinct finishes, the new Ode collection thus strikes a perfect balance between profile, proportions and performance and brings radiance, a touch of modernity, and a sought-after sense of calm and comfort.

A Saint-Hyacinthe, Québec, company designs a bathtub that allows people with reduced mobility to develop their autonomy while enjoying a bubbly moment of comfort.
DESIGNERS, OCCUPATIONAL THERAPISTS & MORE Designers and occupational therapists worked as a team for five years, investing more than $3M in research and development, and benefiting from the assistance of CRIQ and the National Research Council of Canada, in order to shape an innovative product in terms of safety that it provides users, both people with reduced mobility and their caregivers. CONTROL AT THE TIP OF A TOUCH Assisto’s electronic control is tactile and easy to use. Its screen is larger than those of traditional system bathtubs. Color and pictograms for the different functions have been integrated to facilitate its use. A High-Tech Window Upon Nature
Québec City’s Sainte-Foy Outdoor Base distinguishes itself by its curtain wall design, combining North American wood essences and an award-winning glazing and waterproofing technology. SKIERS & FISHERMEN WELCOME This 2,500 m² institutional facility consists of four connected buildings – all set on the ground floor. It welcomes skiers, fishermen and other leisure seekers to this beautifully large recreational space in the heart of Quebec City. MATERIALS OF A NORDIC LANDSCAPE Made of a glue-laminated wood structure, the pavilion incorporates natural elements that reflect the northern landscape, such as wooden decking for floors, interior wooden wall cladding, cedar shingle siding and a cedar-shingle rooftop. NATURE & SUNSHINE The base’s multifunctional room is supported by a double-glazed curtain wall made of laminated wood of black spruce and pine glue. Highly waterproof and featuring a three-level drainage system, it adapts to often-harsh Québécois winters. Passive solar heating is activated as needed while the openness-to-nature feeling and sun warmth are felt year-round, come summer or winter. “PASSIVE HOUSE” Manufactured in Québec by Unicel Architectural using German technology, these facades are entirely customizable and certified “passive house”. This reception pavilion for Sainte-Foy’s Leisure Center also won a 2021 Award of Excellence in Architecture for public institutional buildings from the Ordre des Architectes du Québec. Now that’s what we call a promising passivity!

Brought to You by the Letter “B”
Photo : Luc Robitaille
“Bang!” goes BangBang’s unconditional love for coffee. And, after a year marked by accumulated fatigues and times of considerable discouragement, an ephemeral private label is born.
A CLEVERLY PACKED PICK-ME-UP BangBang studio combined its passion for the black bean and its talent for brand design by launching a limited edition series of six coffee beans developed through an invaluable collaboration with ZAB Café. BY CREATIVES, FOR CREATIVES Made by creative minds and catering to creative atoms alike, this self-promotional design agency initiative declines its coffee bean offer by playing wisely on typography. THE LETTER “B” Coffee blends take turns paying tribute to the beautiful typographic of the letter “B”. Sometimes bold, sometimes cursive, in capital or small-letter font, the letter comes to life to display the array of tastebud pleasures awaited. ECO-BLEND This series of 100% compostable bags, printed with water-based ink, was sent out as a thank you gift to the agency’s customers and collaborators who allowed the studio to be successful during the hardships of 2021. Derived merchandising items and a limited part of the coffee blends are also sold on beanbean.cafe, for all caffeinated and wideawake souls to enjoy!

Luxembourg
Luxembourg ampersand.studio
The Pages of Fame Rugged is all about celebrating Luxembourg’s exceptional Night Marathon, the Grand Duchy capital street party in which thousands of panting and sweating night runners partake.
UNFILTERED PHOTOGRAPHY For the event’s 14th edition, ampersand.studio deployed a team of three fierce-eyed photographers in the heart of the marathon and the core of the night to capture the atmosphere and emotions. INSPIRATIONAL STORIES The first thing that strikes the reader upon turning the book’s pages is its profusion of fantastic photography. As testimonies of the event, they capture the range of emotions one feels prior, during and after running, not seeking to capture the beauty, but rather the authenticity of a feeling, however rugged it might be. BOLD & BEAUTIFUL Opting for a clear and reduced design, the designer chose a concise yet restrained bold font that leaves room to savor the pages’ great photography and the stories they tell about the athletes and their passion for running. PRINT RUN With a print run of 13,000 copies, the exclusive magazine was sent to all runners of Luxembourg’s 14th ING Night Marathon while an eversion allows all non-runners to browse and be inspired. In the words of creator Guido Kröger: “My enthusiasm for editorial design runs just as strong as my love for running.” Putting his studio’s heart and soul, passion and commitment into creating an art magazine about the sport of running packed with honest, unfiltered photography and inspirational stories was a given, a calling, a dream come true.

The Fiber of Biodiversity
Photo : Atelier des Refusés
The silence-ridden months at the beginning of the pandemic launched a new creative adventure that encompasses circular economy, lightness, uniqueness and softness. L’Atelier des Refusés was born as a positive reaction to different needs.
SOFT COMFORT The throw pillow, soft and welcoming, is a deco element that knows to set an accent and change the impact of a room, with so little effort. For Carolina, the need to imagine a new colorful, light, playful project, and why not, nice on the planet, came to be felt, more intensely than ever.
Photo : Atelier des Refusés
A HARD-KNOCK YEAR Architect Carolina Nisivoccia, artistic director of the Milan-handcrafted decorative throw pillow collection, had a thought. “Everyone wanted to their house cozier to live in. For many, their home became a refuge from the harsh life realities of 2020”, she reminds us.
THE GENESIS OF ITS NAME The name of the Atelier des Refusés was inspired by the famous Salon des Refusés which presented this collection of works refused by the official Paris Salon in 1863. It contained real masterpieces by Manet and Monet, Pissarro and many others.
Photo : Atelier des Refusés
BEAUTIFUL MATERIALS, BEAUTIFUL TOUCHES The brand is based on this idea of rescuing beautiful fabrics excluded from the manufacturing cycle, ends of series from major home textile manufacturers, and creating unique decorative accessories by mixing and matching different textiles. A soft and varied family of colors and energy, that perfectly embody what the designer likes to call “harmonious biodiversity”. Brava!

The Colors of Cooking
Colorful photographs, bold typographic elements and dynamic graphic tricks create a successful tour de force and inspire newbie cooks to get going in the kitchen!
RAINBOW BRIGHT Here is an unpretentious, joyful and colourful recipe book that can be leafed through with pleasure. Multicolored, the book’s edge encourages readers to discover the love of food and democratizes the art of cooking. REVISITING CLASSICS Novelist and columnist by profession, the author Geneviève Pettersen and Saint-Jean Éditeur revisit sometimes snubbed classics, such as the “simplistic” grilled cheese or the “vulgar” spare ribs and accompany the recipes with tasty anecdotes visually highlighted. ILLUSTRATING TALES The design focuses on illustrating, in different ways each time, these culinary anecdotes of amusing content and amused tone. The reader discovers easy recipes presented in the joy of cooking for a simple everyday real-life home-cooked meal. A “POTLUCK” OF GENRES Here is a winning graphic approach imagined by Compagnie et cie that brings together a host of disparate elements ranging from culinary tips to hilarious comments. The happy mix of genres gives the book a vintage touch that does justice to the recipes laid on pages. Enjoy!

LUX, as in… Let There Be Light!
This new genre do-it-yourself Quebec City hotel wanted to offer clients a “Lovely User Experience”, or as its name suggests, LUX, in a new way, a new light, a new time.
A THREE-LETTER STRATEGY Phonetically, the name of the hotel evokes luxury… To avoid confusion between the perception of the name and the sought-out positioning as an automated hotel offering self-serving amenities, Agence Spatiale transformed the word-play confusion into a seized opportunity to differentiate the project from its competition. Thus LUXury does not come with a hefty price tag, instead, it stands for a “Lovely User Experience.” Period. A PLAY ON WORDS By playing with the hotel name’s three letters using typography and color, the brand exploits differentiated communication angles and promotes a universal language that showcases the range of amenities and services offered. COLORS TO THE RESCUE Ocher, teal, turquoise, black and white are the means to identify messages intended for different clienteles, or to target new and loyal customers. Here, the letters that make up the identity actively participate in the “storytelling” of the brand, while becoming signage elements used to identify places within the hotel and in its vicinity. INNER & OUTER BEAUTY The fittings embrace the brand’s colors as well. An art installation stands in the hotel entrance and serves as a perfect backdrop for Instagram selfie takers. Notice the custom-made furniture shaped like an “X”? Good game!

A Clever & Fresh Glass Fresco
Photos : David Boyer
In the heart of a city park, the Rosemont pumping station distinguishes itself by its audacious filigree fresco that recalls both the water filtered inside the building and the sports practiced outside in the park.
A MIRROR ONTO THE CITY On the building’s main facade, massive windows reflect the street’s comings and goings and flood the heart of the building, otherwise concrete-filled, with warm natural light. MONTREAL CONFIDENTIAL On the building’s rear facade, a low and elongated volume faces the large park’s athletics track. The civil building having to maintain a certain confidentiality in order to conceal the interior fittings from the outside gaze, a clever game on opacity was played on the mural’s undulations of blue, brilliantly imagined by TLA Architectes. BLUE LIKE WATER Opaque at pedestrian height, the undulations become more and more transparent as the move toward the top, thus letting light shine in. The result is a clear, bluish and soothing interior atmosphere that evokes, of course, the water treated on a daily basis. PORTRAITS OF ATHLETES Dynamic, the mural illustrates characters indulging in hurdling, javelin throwing, soccer and more. It continues on the north wall of the building to reveal a tribute, in illustration and in words, to the champion whose name the park bears, Étienne Desmarteau, Quebec Olympic athlete and hammer throwing gold medalist at the 1904 Saint-Louis Games. By showcasing this hero of the past and celebrating the virtues of sport, the designers created a privileged link between the building and its environment. Bravo!

Craftsmanship + Design, What a Mix!
Inspired by an artisanal approach to eyewear manufacturing and customer service, this eyewear banner is part of a “hipster chic”inspired local retail vision.
QUALITY IS PART OF ITS OPTICAL GENETICS The optical factory strives on its community attachment and anchorage in the spirit of local service. Thus, the notion of “artistry” is at the heart of the brand’s vision. It can be seen, in particular, in the internal optical lens shaping workshop. SCANDINAVIAN & POSTINDUSTRIAL MODERNISM To better establish this vision, the stores are designed to facilitate interpersonal exchanges and bring the idea of production to the forefront. The latter is materialized in stores by both post-industrial and Scandinavian modern architectural elements. A HUMAN-FOCUSED BRAND Soleil communication de marque designed a logo that gives a modern spirit to a name that represents the craftsmanship and tradition. It uses the symbol of the stylized eyeglass and integrates it into the eyewear name to form the first two letters of the word “optique”. METALLIC COPPERS & WARM BLACKS All elements of the developed brand universe, ranging from packaging to signage and advertising, feature a copper hue and a warm black. A series of photographs depicts fellow citizens caught on the spot in natural light and without artifice. They are the reflection of a brand that aspires to simple and authentic human values. NEW TALENTS AWARD
IVY STUDIO
132 | INTÉRIEURS 86
R E DE F I N I NG A L E AGU E OF I T S OW N Opened in Montréal, Canada, in 2018, this up-and-coming office of architecture reimagines the boundaries of design through a collaborative approach that challenges industry standards. Congratulations to this talented foursome of friends known as Ivy Studio and discover how they work to create custom spaces that propel brands further.
SCHOOL TIES Describing themselves as a group of four friends working together and having fun designing, Philip Staszewski, Guillaume Riel, David Kirouac and Gabrielle Rousseau met at Laval University in Quebec City where they teamed up to tackle group projects. Ultimately, their school-tie spirit of teamwork and their shared philosophy of interiors featuring local craftsmanship whenever possible and, thus, creating one-of-a-kind crowd-pleasing interiors, are what make the firm work. EVIDENCE FOR THE JURY As proof for the jury, last June, the quartet was invited by Index-Design to share with the professional public its vision and its approach to design which puts forward the creation of custom-made furniture and decorative accents, encouraging , as a result, the economy and local craftsmanship and know-how. Custom-made furniture items and deco accents are a trademark quality to any and all Ivy Studio signed interior. From Café Chez Teta’s terracotta light fixtures to Ho Lee Chix’s striking design featuring a grandiose canopy dressed in
hundreds of red flowers reminiscent of Chinese plum blossoms, one-of-a-kind details stand out in Ivy’s approach and work. KIDS IN THE HALL The strong University-campus bond forged amongst the group could explain the office of architecture’s high success rate at creating coworking and co-living environments like no other. While the Plaza Hutchison transform a purely transitional entrance hall into a cool-kids-in-the-hall shared lobby, offices like Spatial command a whole new way of playing with space. THE ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM From rich burgundies to deep blues, from immaculately bleached whites to crisp natural tones, color accents are consistently bold and beautiful in Ivy’s line of work. Navy velvet, linen-colored stripes, burgundy steel and washed-out green stained wood are elements that serve as complements to the fittings and stage sometimes extravagant choices, such as the elephant in the room at Plaza Hutchison, the lobby’s pink painted wall!
FRIED CHICKEN & CHINOISERIE The keen sense of detail and thorough search for meaning are also particularly successful in the Ivy’s line of work. At Ho Lee Chix, lighting takes shape within a series of wooden birdcages, creating a lively and eclectic ambiance reminiscent of the energy of a street market. For Vention’s corporate office interiors, the firm draws inspiration from the company’s direct line of work and main source of activity, metal extrusion manufacturing. Well played! A very ingenious and meaningful approach to spaces. IN THE IVY LEAGUE OF GRANDS PRIX Check out the platinum-winning projects designed by Ivy Studio as two of their most recent GRAND PRIZE-winning feats, White’s (page 84) and metal extrusions manufacturer Vention’s brand new propellant headquarters (page 66). Congratulations to Philip Staszewski, Guillaume Riel, David Kirouac and Gabrielle Rousseau for the well-deserved Emerging Talents Award. Here are four young and talented creators with a positive and refreshing take on design, creating one-of-a-kind Ivy League of their own. Cheers!
