I know how it can be. Sometimes, life’s routines can feel predictable…possibly too predictable. Interestingly, studies show our mundane habits and predictable patterns of daily routine can bring a deeper meaning to life. Would you agree that knowing how your day will play out – from what you’ll eat for breakfast to what time you’ll go to bed – gives you a sense of comfort? Humans love routines. But, think of it this way: Your daily living routine also sets a great foundation for a new adventure! A platform from which to jump. Summer will come knocking on spring’s door before we know it. Is this the summer you’ll step out of your routine? Take that vacation you’ve been putting off? Rearrange your hum-drum schedule for time with your friends or family? Eleanor Roosevelt said, “The purpose of life is to live it, to taste experience to the utmost, to reach out eagerly and without fear for newer and richer experience.” Experiences can keep us all young at heart…and brave, too! In this issue of Aging Tree Illustrated we’re sending you out into the season with inspiration for an adventure you may be overdue for: the multi-generational vacation! Sound scary? Don’t be afraid. In our cover story, Amanda Cleary Eastep brings us helpful tips regarding how to navigate some getaway time with family. And, your travel plans in the coming months will be smoother with our travel smart tips, information on legal documents you may need to prepare and bring along, and other advice that will comfort you, and hopefully, inspire you to venture out and gain some new experiences. Plus, as you’ve come to expect with Aging Tree Illustrated, we bring you insight on living well, senior services in the community, fitness tips and a wonderful recipe for breakfast casserole – and that’s just the start! Remember Mrs. Roosevelt’s wise words about life’s purpose and our obligation to reach out for experiences. Step out in faith that something meaningful will happen…and it surely will.
Make your days great…you’re in charge of them..

We Midwesterners would have had every excuse to begin our first day with complaints about the cool and rainy weather we hoped to leave at home. But we left our expectations and disappointments behind, instead, pulled 14 Mickey Mouse rain slickers over our already damp clothes, and headed to the log ride. I focused on the fact that it was the first time my stepchildren had been to Disney World, the first time my husband and I had been there together, and the first time my children, my brother’s family, and my parents had all vacationed with us. Splash Mountain would be a new experience for some of us and nostalgic for others. The
tion still represents the purpose of trips like this--to enjoy the people we love and make memories with them. Despite the challenges inherent in traveling with a large group of family members, people usually remember these events as “good times,” even many years later. The greater the age span among travelers in a multi-generational party, the more variety (and patience) required. From theme parks to camping trips, many destinations provide amenities and activities that can cater to a range of ages, as well as the range of interests and levels of activity. By Amanda Eastep that last year nearly half of all Americans would be taking a multi-generational vacation. Perhaps, the increase in this type of travel is indicative of the trend
of Americans to spend money on experiences rather than material objects as well as the increased availability of travel options to accommodate these families. Travelandleisure.com suggests “grandparent-friendly” destinations that also provide fun and entertainment for younger generations craving adventure, including river and ocean cruises, train journeys, all-inclusive family resorts, dude ranches and even safaris. A multi-generational trip is not going to be everyone’s dream vacation. Some family members envision a cabin in the woods, cont. pg 10 |8|

while others relish the lights and sounds of Las Vegas. Some want to relax to the sound of ocean waves, and others are ready to ride the waves. In general, family vacations involve compromise; this is even more true in multi-generational scenarios. Amanda Vallone, co-owner and marketing director at Roseborough Travel in DeLand, Florida, has traveled the family vacation route many times and has also led tour groups of up to 75 people. She and her husband have vacationed with four generations of family members, ranging in age from her two-year-old daughter to her husband’s 72-year-old grandmother. Vallone warns that initial family meetings to brainstorm vacation ideas often lead to frustration and a lack of consensus. To help expedite the planning of a multi-generational trip, she rec-
ommends that families appoint one or two decision makers who check in when larger decisions need to be made. “I highly recommend a group leader who brings info back to the larger group and presents options,” said Vallone. “Families can then create a beautiful plan around that core plan.” For our Disney World vacations, we rely on my mother, the consummate WDW travel “agent.” In addition to reserving dates for a timeshare, she plans a tentative agenda for the week that ensures that our entire group will share specific experiences together, such as that favorite ride or dinner in the evening. In between, each family unit has time to themselves. “We have found what works best for us is not to expect everyone to be on the same page,” Vallone said. To offset this, their family also relies on a basic schedule
that includes designated meeting points. For Vallone’s family, that meeting point involves dinner together [make reservations!] after spending the day apart pursuing individual interests and activities. “Throughout our 17 years of traveling together, meeting for dinner has always been our rule,” Vallone said. “During the day, we have grand adventures on our own time and at our own pace, then at dinner, we come together to share fantastic conversations about everything we did. That’s the best guideline I can give for family travel.”

navigate what can be a daunting planning process. Vallone has experience not just as a traveler, but as an expert in the travel industry. In addition to her own family excursions, she helps families plan their trips through Roseborough Travel every day.. Vallone said that the basic process begins with a family making the following decisions: 1. Choose a destination or the type of destination. A family may know that they want to visit New York City and may even know what they want to do there, e.g. stand in Times Square or visit the Statue of Liberty. On the other hand, they may not know the exact locale but have agreed on a tropical getaway with lots of sand and sun. 2. Provide a timeframe. Family members need to agree on a length of time and specific dates, one of the biggest challenges for younger generations working around school and job schedules. But these dates especially important for planning. “Travelers often want to know flight information first, but we have to check accommodations first,” said Vallone. “There’s no sense buying plane tickets if there’s nowhere to travel to.” Once this information is provided, the travel agent can then narrow down plans based on desired activities and flight schedules. Vallone and her team ask families a series of questions to help customize the vacation plan. Agents then help with arranging transportation between the airport and resort/destination, researching desired amenities, and scheduling special excursions.
The aid of a travel agent can be especially crucial when traveling involves elderly family members or those with special needs. An agent can help ensure particular accommodations such as handicap access and refrigeration for medication. Agents also help families consider activities such as hop-on/hop-off tours for those who are less active, while suggesting more physically demanding excursions for more active members of the family. “Agents give their recommendations of options, then the families make all the choices,” Vallone said. When planning a multi-generational vacation, one of the best choices may be to lower expectations for the “perfect” vacation but have high expectations for spending time with the people you love most.
Tips for making the most of your multi-generational family vacation
Be prepared--Bandages, good walking shoes, and water bottles are essential, but so is space. Don’t over plan the day; instead, leave room for rest, spontaneity, and unexpected events. Two of our WDW vacations have involved trips to the emergency room--one for the flu and another for a somersault down the hotel stairs to rival a Cirque du Soleil act. Be flexible--If every person goes into a trip with a rigid list of to-do’s, a lot of people are going to end up disappointed. Wants can vary as much as personalities and ages. A certain amount of flexibility--not just in the variety of activities available but in
APRIL 2017 | ONE-STOP Senior Care | Aging Tree.com • 866-320-8803
attitudes--can make a positive difference for everyone. Be patient--Patience especially comes in handy when traveling with very young children and elderly family members who need to take things at a slower pace. Taking time for naps in the middle of a busy day may seem like a waste of time, but these breaks can help ensure everyone stays physically and emotionally healthy and that a vacation actually feels like a vacation. Be gracious--We often go into vacations with high expectations--not of ourselves, but of others. But babies get fussy, teenagers will bicker and zone out, and grandparents and great grandparents get weary. Appreciate what each generation brings to the trip--small children reawaken wonder, teenagers and young adults can bring energy, and older generations remind us to take opportunities to relax and reconnect. Be ready...to make great memories. For more information or to talk with a senior care advisor at no cost, call Aging Tree at 1-866-3208803. Family is as important in later life as during childhood. This support creates joy and a sense of belonging through shared time together. This can also be accomplished through spending time together on a multigenerational vacation. Now this may be something you do repeatedly or an excursion you have not even thought possible or desirable.

By Cheree M. Albert MSN, ARNP, CPNP Regardless, there is some preparation for us all, beyond where to go and what to pack, that is foundational to creating the kind of cherished memories that fills the hearts of all travelers. One milepost of aging gracefully is how to navigate the new normal as our family and social networks inevitably change and adult children move away to live their own lives. Our thoughts, emotions and attitudes, according to Andrew Weil in his book Healthy Aging are “key determinants of how we age.” These are influenced by the choices we have made and it is not uncommon at any age to revisit these choices and decisions. Joan Chittister in her book, The Gift of Years, notes that this evaluation can be interwoven with regret. I would like to “unpack” this subject a bit further in an encouraging manner because it is the topic I hear frequently that presents a real challenge to fruitful communication and aging gracefully. Regret about what was said and done or what was lacking, both are powerful roadblocks. It is the obstacle that makes it more difficult to pick up the phone to cont. pg 14 | 12 |

connect with a family member or friend and as the time passes that phone seems to weigh one hundred pounds. Regret claims to be insight, according to Chittister, but “fails to understand that there are many ways to fullness of life, all of them different, all of them unique.” She adds that the “twinges of regret are a step-over point in life. They invite us to revisit the ideals and motives that brought us to where we are now. They remind us of the people we loved, the sense of direction that drove us on, the commitments we made and kept. It is the choices we made in the past that have brought us to the person we are today.” Looking back is not the exercise that matters here, rather did everything that needed to develop because of each choice happen? There is a true blessing in this effort as it allows us to be present in this new time of life in an entirely new way. It urges us to continue becoming. One of my life’s goals is to be brave enough to have a conversation that matters whenever possible. I hope that I am becoming better at this every day. There is
a multitude of conversations yet to have with no more perfect time than the present: time to be honest; time to be forgiving; time to
be open; time to be grateful; time to be patient; time to be lovable, loving and loved. Time away from the daily routine with extended family can present such an opportunity. Having time where everyone is ‘unplugged” is a real asset and is a travel and vacation option rapidly growing in popularity. Also, especially impactful for children is when elders who are not their parents take an interest in them, talk to them and show them how to do things perhaps even the “old fashioned way”. Happily, many of these experiences, for ex-
ample learning to fish, fix a bicycle, learning to bake cookies and cook a meal can be accomplished with minimal resources. Chittister shares that intergenerational friendships are as important to the elder as they are to the child as children give us a lifeline to the present and the future. It is said that the regrets most people have are for the things they did not do. Regret is the thief that robs us of the fullness of our dreams for the future. Make that call to connect with family and friends, respond positively to an invitation to visit or take a trip together. “As for old age”, Seneca said, “embrace and love it. It abounds with pleasure if you know how to use it.” Navigating the art of aging gracefully within the family is made easier if we are all open to learning how. We can model this journey and mentor others to do the same, one milepost at a time so our children will know that family matters. INSIDE ADVISOR Legal - “On the Road Again!” What Documents You Should Prepare BEFORE You Travel
Easter and Passover are right around the corner, so you plan to visit your loved ones for a family celebration. Yeah!! Whether you are driving, flying, or riding a train, you should make sure that you’re prepared for life’s surprises. As fun as traveling will be, preparing for unexpected challenges will provide the peace of mind that comes with knowing that your affairs will be handled in a timely and inexpensive manner if you become disabled or die during your travels.
THE “MUST-HAVE” PLAN Make sure that you have legally authorized your loved ones to make financial and healthcare decisions if you are unable to do so. Key to doing that is having a RECENT Durable Power of Attorney, Healthcare Power of Attorney, Living Will, and HIPPA release. When using old or not properly drafted and signed documents, your loved ones might face difficult and expensive challenges with financial institutions and health care providers. Florida has very specific requirements for durable powers of attorney, which if not met will likely result in both foreseeable and unforeseeable consequences. THE FULL PLAN Finally, you should prepare and sign a “Will” and/or Trust so that your final affairs will be handled smoothly and without significant

INSIDE ADVISOR The last week of April is National Immunization Awareness Week. It’s time to see your health care provider to identify what vaccines you will need this year. I’ve heard some seniors say they skip vaccines because they think they “make them sick”, or because they have safety concerns. According to Marvin Lipman, Consumer Reports’ chief medical adviser, “Each year, at least 30,000 people die from complications related to vaccine-preventable diseases. Getting the right shots doesn’t guarantee that you won’t get sick, but it will significantly improve your odds.” What vaccines are recommended by the CDC for those 60 or older?
Influenza (Flu) - is recommended annually. Shingles (Herpes Zoster) - Given once at age 60. If you’ve had chickenpox, you can get Shingles at any time. Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis (Whooping Cough) - Tetanus is now a rare disease in the U.S. There is a combination booster vaccine, called Tdap, which protects against tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (whooping cough). Tdap should be given to all adults once in place of one Td (tetanus-diphtheria) booster vaccine, which is recommended every 10 years. Although most adults were vaccinated against whooping cough as children or may have had the disease as a child, protection wears off over time. It is highly contagious and can be fatal to seniors and infants. Therefore, grandparents play a vital role in receiving this vaccine to help protect infant grandchildren. The vaccine should be

given at least 2 weeks before visiting the baby. Pneumococcal disease (Pneumonia) - Pneumococcal disease is a serious disease that causes much sickness and death. In fact, pneumococcal disease kills more people in the U.S. each year than all other vaccine-preventable diseases combined. The vaccine is recommended for all adults 65 years or older. If you will be traveling out of the country you may need additional vaccinations, so speak with your physician when planning a trip. Schedule your appointment to discuss immunizations with your health care provider.

Cataracts Cataracts are the world’s leading cause of blindness. A cataract is when the lens in your eye becomes cloudy and hard over time. Most cataracts develop from normal aging and start to develop in your 40s and 50s, but may not affect your vision until after the age of 60. By age 80, more than half of all Americans either have a cataract or have had cataract surgery. In other cases, cataracts can be caused by an eye injury, long-term diabetes, steroid medications, or radiation treatment. They can cause symptoms such as cloudy or blurred vision, double vision, dim colors, halos around lights, difficulty driving at night, and glare from oncoming headlights. You can correct for these symptoms with stronger
lighting and glasses for a while, since cataracts progress slowly. When glasses do not help anymore and your vision is interfering with daily activities such as driving and reading, it may be time for cataract surgery. Unfortunately, there is no real way to prevent cataracts. Because they are a natural condition that occurs over time, lasers, diet, or medication cannot cure cataracts. Surgery is the only way to remove cataracts. The good news is that cataract surgery is usually a safe and effective procedure. More than 3 million cataract surgeries are performed every year in the United States alone. During the surgery, the cataract is removed and an artificial lens is placed in the eye to help you to see clear-

Importance of Annual Exams: Early Detection Abnormal Vaginal Bleeding and Endometrial Cancer Endometrial cancer is the most common type of cancer that affects the female reproductive organs in the country. What is endometrial cancer? Endometrial cancer is cancer of the endometrium, which is the lining of the uterus. Who is at risk for endometrial cancer? All women with an intact uterus are at risk, some are however, at a higher risk than others. According to an article published by the American College Of Ob/Gyn in June of 2016, endometrial cancer was diagnosed in approximately 54,870 women in 2015 of whom 10,170 did not survive.
Does the annual gynecologic exam help? I recommend every woman of reproductive age to see a gynecologist at least once a year with or without the PAP test being done. Older women who have not carried a pregnancy to full term are at a slightly higher risk and should see a gynecologist at least once a year for a complete evaluation. During this visit, the physician will review all necessary routine screening and address all potential issues. The most common sign of trouble is abnormal vaginal bleeding of any degree, ranging from spotting to large clots or heavy bleeding. Most abnormal bleeding is, however, NOT due to the presence of cancer. In post menopausal women, most commonly dryness in the
By Dr. Besong vaginal or lining of the uterus is the culprit. Other non-trauma related causes of abnormal bleeding include benign uterine fibroids, polyps and infections. All bleeding, however, must be investigated. This may involve, a pelvic exam, a complete pelvic ultrasound and biopsy of the lining of the uterus. Treatment and management More than 70% of cases of endometrial cancer are stage I at the time of diagnosis, when the reported 5-year survival rate is 90%. Treatment usually involves a full hysterectomy, removal of tubes and ovaries and a staging procedure if necessary.

Botox When we hear the term “wrinkle-free” nowadays, it does not only refer to linens. Many people are still searching for the fountain of youth. The natural aging process results in atrophy and thinning of our skin as we start losing collagen and elasticity. These skin changes lead to wrinkles, which become more prominent with repetitive contraction of our facial muscles. Topical anti-aging creams can only go so far by helping provide moisture to the skin or preventing further sun damage. Neurotoxin injections, such as Botox® Cosmetic, actually reduce the appearance of wrinkles and help prevent further progression and furrowing of the skin by relaxing specific overac-
tive muscles. Wrinkles can be classified as dynamic wrinkles or static wrinkles. Dynamic wrinkles appear with movement when your facial muscles contract. Static wrinkles are noticeable at rest and become deeper over time. As we age, dynamic wrinkles will eventually become static wrinkles. Botox® works best for dynamic wrinkles, but can be used to treat static wrinkles in combination with dermal fillers to help restore volume. The areas most commonly treated: “crow’s feet”, the “11 lines” between the brows, and forehead wrinkles. Botulinum toxin takes about two weeks to fully show results and may last up to 3-4 months. Botox® injections
By Monica E. Cantu, MD are relatively safe. The most common side effects include swelling or bruising at the injection site, headache, or flu-like symptoms. We can try to “freeze” time,” but do not “freeze” all your face. Botox® Cosmetic can provide a natural, rejuvenated appearance without loss of facial expression. Dr. Cantú graduated from the University of Texas Medical School at Houston and completed part of her postgraduate training at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. In her spare time, she enjoys exploring the many cultural & sporting events that Florida has to offer.

Traveling with Medical Equipment Can be Challenging
The most important thing to remember about traveling is to have a copy or an extra prescription for whatever you need on your trip. So often people ask for equipment that requires a prescription and get frustrated that they cannot get their doctor on the phone because it is the weekend. Make sure if you have a medical device that requires a prescription that you have it ready to go in the event of an emergency. Flying with medical equipment has benefits that are available for people with disabilities or that need extra time to board. Once you arrive at the airport check in at the Ticketing Counter and ask a customer service person about boarding early or having a pre-boarding pass printed. These are Free and they allow you to get on the plane before anyone else to avoid the pushing and rushing that occurs with main boarding. There are wheelchairs available that will get you inside the plane so you do not have to use your walker or wheelchair during the boarding process.
Other things to consider: Oxygen requires preplanning
1. Contact Your Airline and Notify Them You are Traveling with Oxygen 2. Get a Copy of Your Prescription and Doctor’s Note

VITAS Hospice Volunteers Play a Vital Role in Caring for Patients SERVICE BRANCH
I
n 1982, hospice care became a Medicare benefit and with that came certain requirements, one being the need for volunteers, who by law must provide a minimum of five percent of total patient care hours provided annually. In other words, the role of hospice volunteers is so important that their participation is legally mandated by the government. Hospice volunteers are a vital component of hospice teams because they provide companionship to patients and offer respite care to families. They bring a high level of energy, warmth and kindness to patients facing life-limiting illnesses, and complement the services provided by the rest of the interdisciplinary team, which include skilled physicians, nurses, home health aides, social workers and chaplains. Being a volunteer, irrespective of age and background, requires a great measure of compassion and understanding. National Volunteer Week, April 23–29, is a celebration, during which volunteers across the nation are recognized and honored for selflessly dedicating their time and skills in the service of others. VITAS Healthcare, the nation’s leading provider of end-of-life care, is proud to recognize its hospice volunteers, who provide compassionate care to terminally ill patients and their families throughout Volusia and Flagler counties. There are many misconceptions
about hospice care. To clarify, hospice is an end-of-life care option for people with a terminal illness and a prognosis of six months or less to live. Additionally, the care can be administered at the
patient’s home, hospice inpatient units as well as hospitals, nursing homes and assisted living facilities or residential care communities. According to VITAS Volunteer Services Manager Ramona McPherson, hospice care is special, not only because the care is provided by professional, compassionate teams of health care experts but also, by loving and generous people who want to make a genuine difference in the lives of others at a very difficult and confusing time. VITAS provides care to all hospice-appropriate patients in Volusia and Flagler counties including patients with complex symptoms. With offices conveniently located in Daytona Beach, New Smyrna Beach, Palm Coast and Orange City, VITAS welcomes volunteers who can complete office tasks, visit patients wherever they call home to offer companionship, run errands and help in other meaningful ways. Hospice volunteers are as diverse as the patients they serve,

By Marie Nielsen-Jones, VITAS Healthcare Director of Market Development representing all ages, ethnic backgrounds and lifestyles, and ranging from students to retirees. Some volunteers are moving through their own grief processes after having lost loved ones and some are military veterans who now support other veterans facing the end of life. Others choose to sew teddy bears called “Memory Bears,” or pillows and lap blankets. VITAS even has teams of loving animals called “Paw Pals,” who along with their owners, visit patients and offer a special friendship that only pets can provide. Specialized volunteers are also welcome to serve, including those with experience or interest in sewing or music, massage, art and pet therapy. VITAS volunteers are given the necessary training they need to provide support to patients at the end of life. Orientation training classes and scheduling of assignments are based on the volunteer’s preferences and availability. The experience is highly beneficial for everyone involved, especially volunteers, who usually decide to stay on for years after experiencing the rewards of giving back and seeing the positive impacts of their work. To become a hospice volunteer, call Ramona McPherson at 386671-2792 or email her at Ramona. McPherson@vitas.com. For more information about hospice care, visit www.VITAS.com. | 28 |
Make a Difference in Someone’s Life and in Yours Learn to be a hospice volunteer; VITAS can help. You can touch a life at a very meaningful time when you learn how to be a VITAS Volunteer. The rewards are priceless. Our volunteers go to the bedside to listen, read aloud or just chat. They help with clerical tasks in our office and help families cope at home. They bring their talents and even their pets to patients near the end of life. Find out what our current volunteer opportunities are, when classes are scheduled and how VITAS focuses on the lives of patients and their families.

Aging Tree Travel Adventures Travel Smart - Knowing the inside scoop on Yellowstone National Park TRAVEL BRANCH
W
e’ve all heard of Yellowstone National Park before, maybe you have even had the amazing opportunity to experience this National Park first hand. But so many of us have never heard of the hidden secrets, fun facts, or simply put phenomenon of the park. As I am preparing for our trip to Yellowstone, I wanted to share some of the interesting things I have discovered. Did you know? 1. Yellowstone actually spans 3 states? • It is 96% in Wyoming, 3% in Montana and 1% in Idaho. • The wide open spaces of our nations 1st national park are composed of 80% forests, 15% grassland and 5% water. • The expansive area alone leaves a LOT to be discovered. 2. Yellowstone is the Second oldest national park in the world. • Yellowstone is the first national park of the United States of America with the official date of establishment being March 1, 1872. • Making it the younger brother to Mongolias, Bogd Khan Uul by only 96 years. 3. First Witnesses of the Geysers were considered Delusional. • Descriptions of “fire & brimstone” were shared
in stories of John Colter’s solo expedition through the wilderness of what we now know as Wyoming (circa 1807). • Upon his return Colter
shared his stories of what he had seen and many thought these to be “delusions”. It took almost 50 years to be set straight by independent explorer Jim Bridger. • The expedition Bridger took to Yellowstone produced accounts of boiling springs and waters sprouting from the ground—sadly his reports met the same skepticism that dogged Colter. I guess we will need to see if these explorers were “delusional” for ourselves. 4. Yellowstone is known for the Largest Geyser in the world…and it’s not the one you are thinking of. Old Faithful, may be the most famous geyser on the planet, for her punctual eruptions calculated

in precise intervals every 90 minutes. But the Steamboat Geyser, trumps her in terms of sheer size. Steamboat is capable of producing almost 400-foot-high eruptions of water, is the tallest active geyser on the planet, and he blows his horn like his namesake. Don’t mistake me, Steamboat Geyser has only erupted fewer than ten times in the last twenty years. But when he does blow, he sounds like a massive steam engine during the explosion, hence his namesake=steamboat. It is the tallest active geyser in the world. How about those geyser basins? This was just a taste of the many untold or unknown stores behind the Yellowstone National Park. Do you want to Learn more?
